Ajiran Community Residents Protest, Demand Investigation of Babajide Akinloye Over Prince Ademola’s Death Ajiran, Lagos – July 18, 2026 – Residents of the Ajiran Community on Saturday staged a peaceful protest, calling on the Nigeria Police Force to investigate allegations surrounding the death of Prince Ademola Akinloye, who was killed in August 2024. The protesters marched through Ajiran and neighboring communities carrying placards and chanting slogans demanding justice for the late prince. They urged law enforcement authorities to investigate Babajide Akinloye over his alleged connection to the circumstances surrounding the death of his younger brother. The demonstration follows recent claims made by social media activist Martins Ose, popularly known as VeryDarkMan (VDM), who alleged that Babajide Akinloye was the last known person to contact the deceased on the day of the incident. According to the activist, Babajide allegedly summoned Prince Ademola to the palace, and the deceased was reportedly attacked and killed while on his way there. The protesters also referenced allegations that, two days after the incident, Babajide Akinloye swore to an affidavit to facilitate the release of the deceased’s body without an autopsy being conducted. They further claimed that about seven days after the death, he allegedly applied for the release of the deceased’s mobile phone from the police, a move they believe hindered further investigation into the case. Another issue raised during the protest was the alleged sale of farmland previously operated by the late Prince Ademola. According to the protesters, the property was sold approximately two months after his death by Babajide Akinloye, which they argued should form part of any comprehensive police investigation. Many of the demonstrators wore shirts and caps displaying photographs of Babajide Akinloye and Aare Bashiru Fakorede, accompanied by inscriptions calling for both men to be investigated. The protesters also alleged that Aare Bashiru Fakorede has used his influence to shield Babajide Akinloye from investigation through the office of the Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of Zone 2, Lagos. These allegations have not been independently verified, and no official response had been issued by the individuals named at the time of filing this report. In addition to demanding justice for Prince Ademola, the protesters called for the release of Hammed Tajudeen Akanbi, whom they described as innocent and allegedly being victimized in connection with a land dispute. Placards displayed during the protest bore messages such as: “Justice for Ademola,” “Bloodshed in the Palace,” “Cleanse Ajiran of Bloodshed Now,” “No Prince is Bigger Than Another,” “Prince Ademola Deserves Justice,” and “Babajide Must Be Investigated.” As of the time of this report, the Nigeria Police Force had not issued an official statement regarding the protest or the allegations raised by the demonstrators. Likewise, Babajide Akinloye, Aare Bashiru Fakorede, and the office of the AIG Zone 2 had not publicly responded to the claims.

Lawyer Seeks Mandatory Legal Training for SCID DCP, Denies Leaking Police Investigation File A legal practitioner, Adedotun Ajulo, counsel to Alhaji Hammed Tajudeen Akanbi, has called for mandatory legal training for officers appointed to head the Lagos State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Panti, arguing that the office of the Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) in charge of the unit should only be occupied by officers with a sound understanding of constitutional and criminal law. Ajulo made the call in a statement issued in response to a publication allegedly released on behalf of the Lagos State Police Command, which accused him of leaking what it described as a "classified" investigation file relating to his client. Rejecting the allegation, the lawyer described the publication as "spurious" and "baseless," saying he was compelled to respond because the issues raised extend beyond his person and affect the administration of criminal justice in Nigeria. According to him, the controversy underscores the need for senior police officers heading investigative formations to undergo compulsory legal training in criminal procedure, constitutional law, the law of evidence, disclosure obligations and fair hearing before assuming office. Ajulo argued that the office of the DCP, SCID, Panti, is not merely administrative but serves as the nerve centre of criminal investigations in Lagos, with decisions that directly affect the liberty and constitutional rights of citizens. "The occupant must possess not only investigative experience but also a sound appreciation of the constitutional and statutory safeguards governing criminal investigations and prosecutions," he said. The lawyer maintained that he had discharged his duties as counsel to Akanbi in accordance with the Constitution, the Administration of Criminal Justice Law and the Rules of Professional Conduct for legal practitioners. He also alleged that his client had been subjected to degrading treatment while in police custody following his arrest on April 17, 2026, including prolonged restraint with hand and leg chains and detention under poor conditions until the reported intervention of the Inspector-General of Police. Ajulo said the allegations warrant an independent investigation by the Police Service Commission. He disclosed that after police concluded their investigation and forwarded the duplicate case file to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), the defence formally requested Certified True Copies of the investigation file, witness statements, investigation reports and other relevant documents to prepare for trial, as well as the release of his client's Lexus Sports Utility Vehicle. According to him, the requests were denied. He, however, claimed that substantial portions of the investigation report later appeared on various media platforms, creating what he described as a contradiction in the police's position. Ajulo dismissed claims that he leaked a classified file by attaching documents to an application before the High Court, insisting that the documents relied upon had already been circulating on social media. "There is nothing 'classified' about an investigation file relating to an accused person whose trial has commenced before a court of competent jurisdiction," he stated. He argued that Section 36 of the Constitution guarantees every accused person adequate facilities to prepare a defence, including access to materials the prosecution intends to rely upon. The lawyer described as troubling what he called the refusal of the investigating authorities to provide certified copies of the documents to the defence while the same materials allegedly became available to third parties. He said his legal team would invite judicial and oversight authorities to examine how portions of the investigation file allegedly found their way into the public domain during the pendency of the investigation. Ajulo further maintained that the matter raises broader concerns about the understanding of constitutional safeguards by senior police officers overseeing criminal investigations. He said mandatory legal education for senior investigators would strengthen criminal investigations, improve prosecutions, reduce civil liability against the Nigeria Police Force and enhance public confidence in the justice system. The lawyer reaffirmed his commitment to defending his client within the bounds of the law, adding that appropriate judicial processes would be initiated to challenge any action considered to undermine constitutional guarantees or the fair administration of justice. The Lagos State Police Command had reportedly accused Ajulo of leaking a classified investigation file, an allegation he firmly denied in the statement. |
Ogun Forestry Commissioner, Oludotun Distributes Free LNG to Over 100 Residents to Cushion Economic Hardship By Solanke Ayomideji Taiwo In a renewed demonstration of his commitment to improving the welfare of the people, the Ogun State Commissioner for Forestry, Engr. Taiwo Oludotun, has distributed Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) valued at ₦3,600 each to more than 100 beneficiaries free of charge as part of efforts to ease the economic burden facing residents. The empowerment initiative, which attracted beneficiaries from different communities, was designed to provide immediate relief to households grappling with the rising cost of living while encouraging the adoption of cleaner and more efficient cooking energy. Speaking during the distribution exercise, Engr. Oludotun said the intervention was borne out of compassion and the need to support vulnerable members of society during challenging economic times. According to him, the gesture reflects the government's people-centered approach to improving the standard of living of residents through practical and impactful initiatives. He noted that access to clean cooking energy remains essential to household well-being and environmental sustainability, adding that the free distribution of LNG would not only reduce the financial burden on families but also promote safer and cleaner domestic energy use. "This initiative is our modest contribution towards reducing the hardship being experienced by many families. We understand the challenges people are facing, and we believe that every little support can make a meaningful difference," he said. The commissioner further encouraged beneficiaries to make judicious use of the gas while adhering to all necessary safety precautions in handling and storing LPG/LNG cylinders. He reiterated his commitment to supporting programmes that directly impact the lives of the people and contribute to sustainable development. Many of the beneficiaries expressed gratitude for the gesture, describing it as timely and thoughtful. They noted that the cost of cooking gas has become increasingly difficult for many households to afford, making the free supply a welcome relief. One of the beneficiaries said the intervention would enable families to redirect scarce financial resources to other pressing needs, while another described the commissioner as a leader who has demonstrated concern for the welfare of ordinary citizens. Community leaders and stakeholders who witnessed the exercise also commended Engr. Oludotun for the humanitarian initiative, urging other public office holders and well-meaning individuals to emulate such acts of generosity aimed at supporting the less privileged. The distribution exercise concluded with beneficiaries receiving their allocations in an orderly manner, amid expressions of appreciation and goodwill. The initiative has been widely described as a practical intervention that not only addresses immediate household needs but also reinforces the importance of responsive and compassionate leadership. Observers believe that such community-focused programmes will continue to strengthen public confidence in governance while providing much-needed relief to citizens navigating the prevailing economic challenges. |
Amuzu Distributes Free Cooking Gas to 600 Abeokuta Residents, Promises Sustainable Empowerment PDP Reps Hopeful Toyin Amuzu Distributes Free Cooking Gas to Over 600 Abeokuta South Residents By Our Correspondent ABEOKUTA — The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate for Abeokuta South Federal Constituency in the 2027 House of Representatives election, Chief Toyin Anthony Amuzu, has distributed free 4kg cooking gas cylinders to more than 600 residents of Abeokuta South Local Government Area of Ogun State as part of his ongoing humanitarian and community support initiatives. The beneficiaries, the majority of whom were women, received the gas cylinders during a distribution exercise held at Ijeja, Abeokuta, on Tuesday. The programme, which commenced at about 8:00 a.m. and ended around 3:00 p.m., attracted hundreds of residents seeking relief from the rising cost of living and the increasing prices of household energy. Addressing beneficiaries and supporters at the event, Amuzu said the initiative was designed to ease the financial burden on households that rely on liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) for cooking, particularly at a time when many Nigerians are grappling with economic hardship. According to him, the intervention is part of a broader commitment by the Toyin Amuzu Foundation to provide targeted support to different segments of society through programmes tailored to their specific needs. He recalled that the foundation had recently distributed free fuel to commercial motorcycle operators and taxi drivers across Abeokuta South to cushion the impact of rising fuel prices and transportation costs. "We previously supported commercial motorcycle riders and taxi drivers with free fuel. This cooking gas programme is intended to assist households that depend on gas for cooking. We recognise that different groups have different needs, and we will continue to design interventions that respond to those needs as resources permit," he said. Amuzu, however, maintained that while humanitarian interventions are important in providing immediate relief, they cannot replace sound economic policies capable of delivering long-term prosperity. He said his aspiration to represent Abeokuta South in the House of Representatives is driven by a desire to champion policies that promote sustainable development rather than temporary palliatives. "My priority will be to support and champion legislation that strengthens social protection, empowers families economically and accelerates community development. Our philosophy is to help people acquire the means to earn a sustainable livelihood rather than depend indefinitely on relief materials. We want to support people to catch fish, not merely give them fish to eat," he stated. The PDP standard-bearer also underscored the importance of reliable electricity in driving economic growth, arguing that stable power supply remains one of the most effective ways of stimulating businesses, reducing production costs and creating employment opportunities. He said improved electricity infrastructure would significantly enhance the productivity of small and medium-scale enterprises while encouraging investment and expanding economic opportunities for residents. Amuzu added that the vision aligns with the development agenda of the Ogun State PDP governorship candidate, Chief Oladipupo Adebutu, who has consistently pledged to prioritise electricity and infrastructure development as critical components of the state's economic transformation strategy. Although he currently occupies no elective or appointive public office, Amuzu noted that the Toyin Amuzu Foundation has continued to implement numerous community-based projects across Abeokuta South. According to him, the foundation has undertaken initiatives including the construction of boreholes to improve access to potable water, installation of solar-powered street lights, business support schemes for entrepreneurs, educational assistance for students and various welfare programmes aimed at improving the quality of life of residents. He appealed to residents who were unable to benefit from the cooking gas distribution because of the overwhelming turnout not to lose hope, assuring them that additional phases of the programme would be organised to accommodate more people. "We are encouraged by the large turnout, which also reflects the level of need in our communities. Those who could not benefit today should remain patient. We intend to continue this intervention so that more households can be reached in subsequent phases," he said. Several beneficiaries described the initiative as timely and impactful, noting that the free cooking gas would help reduce household expenses at a period of rising inflation and increasing living costs. Some of the recipients expressed appreciation to Amuzu and the Toyin Amuzu Foundation, saying the intervention would enable families to prepare meals with less financial strain while providing temporary relief from prevailing economic challenges. The distribution exercise is the latest in a series of social intervention programmes organised by the foundation, reinforcing Amuzu's focus on community welfare, economic empowerment and grassroots engagement as he prepares for the 2027 general elections. |

Ajiran Youths Insists AiG Jimoh is Corrupt, Demand Independent Probe into Murder Cases A group of youths from the Ajiran community in Eti-Osa Local Government Area of Lagos State has insisted that Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG), Moshood Jimoh, is compromising the investigation into the murder of two community members, alleging that his handling of the case has undermined public confidence in the justice process. Addressing journalists in Lagos, Lanre Adebayo and isreal Oluwatoyin, who spoke on behalf of the group alleged that the AIG had failed to conduct an impartial investigation into the killings, insisting that his actions had raised serious concerns about transparency and accountability. The youths claimed that rather than ensuring a fair and comprehensive investigation, the police authorities under Jimoh's supervision had allegedly ignored critical evidence and pursued what they described as a selective approach to the cases. According to the group, the murder case has generated widespread anxiety within the Ajiran community, with residents demanding justice for the victims and a credible investigation free from external influence. "We can no longer remain silent while the integrity of this investigation continues to be questioned. The handling of this case has eroded public trust and created the impression that powerful interests are influencing the course of justice," a spokesperson for the group said. They called on the Inspector-General of Police and the Police Service Commission to immediately review the conduct of the investigation and constitute an independent panel to examine the circumstances surrounding the murder case. The youths also appealed to the Federal Government and relevant human rights bodies to monitor the investigation to ensure that justice is served without fear or favour. They maintained that their demand was not intended to undermine the Nigeria Police Force but to restore confidence in the criminal justice system by ensuring that every suspect is investigated and prosecuted strictly based on credible evidence. The group further warned that any attempt to suppress legitimate concerns over the investigation could heighten tensions in the community, urging authorities to act swiftly in the interest of justice and peace. The allegations come amid sustained public interest in the Ajiran murder case, which has attracted divergent reactions from civil society groups and community stakeholders. The group declare support for VeryDarkMan efforts in trying to unmask the conspiracy of the police under AIG Jimoh. It recalled that VeryDarkMan had publicly accused AIG Jimoh of being “extremely corrupt” and “a threat to the justice system,” daring him to sue for criminal defamation if the claims were false.

Lagos Lawyer, Ajulo, Labels AIG Moshood Jimoh 'Incompetent,' Demands Independent Review of Ajiran Killings Probe A Lagos-based lawyer, Adedotun Ajulo Esq, has described the Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG), Moshood Jimoh, as an "incompetent public official" and renewed his call for an independent review of the police investigation into the killings in Ajiran Community. Ajulo made the remarks in a statement issued in response to a publication titled "Ajiran killings: Groups, Stakeholders Exonerate AIG Jimoh Moshood from Corrupt Allegations, Refutes Defamatory Statement as Fallacy,"* in which several groups defended the senior police officer against allegations surrounding the handling of the murder investigation. According to the lawyer, public endorsements and declarations of support cannot replace transparency and accountability in restoring public confidence in the justice system. "Public confidence in the administration of justice cannot be restored through endorsements or public declarations. Confidence is earned through a process that is demonstrably impartial, transparent, and capable of withstanding independent scrutiny," he said. Ajulo accused the AIG of operating with "opacity, selective accountability, and misplaced priorities," alleging that his approach to public service had weakened confidence in the Nigeria Police Force. He further alleged that Jimoh "thrives in secrecy, evades legitimate public scrutiny, and applies rules unevenly to favour preferred individuals or interests," adding that such practices create the perception that official decisions are influenced by personal loyalties rather than fairness and professionalism. The lawyer maintained that the controversy surrounding the Ajiran killings investigation should be resolved through an impartial review rather than competing public statements. "The central issue has never been whether anyone enjoys public support or condemnation. The issue is whether the investigation has been conducted in a manner that inspires confidence among all stakeholders, particularly the victims' families and members of the public," he stated. Ajulo argued that questions about the integrity of the investigation could only be answered through facts, official records and an independent assessment. He also accused the police chief of relying on public relations campaigns instead of demonstrable performance. "Instead of earning public trust through competence, integrity, and measurable achievements, he resorts to mobilising and sponsoring praise singers and paid support groups to manufacture an illusion of popularity and credibility. "No amount of choreographed endorsements can conceal administrative failures or restore public confidence where transparency, impartiality and accountability are absent," he alleged. The legal practitioner called on the Inspector-General of Police to order an independent review of the Ajiran Community murder investigation, insisting that such a step would either validate the integrity of the investigation or expose areas requiring corrective action. According to him, an independent review would serve the interests of the investigators, the families of the victims, the accused persons and the general public. "If the investigation was conducted properly, the review will reinforce its credibility. If shortcomings are identified, appropriate corrective measures can then be taken in accordance with the law," he said. Ajulo stressed that accountability strengthens, rather than weakens, public institutions and urged all stakeholders to avoid personal attacks while supporting lawful and transparent processes aimed at establishing the truth. He concluded by reiterating the long-standing legal principle that "justice must not only be done; it must manifestly and undoubtedly be seen to have been done," describing it as the foundation of every credible criminal justice system. |
Makinde Hails Tinubu, Security Agencies as Abducted Oyo Pupils, Teachers Regain Freedom After 56 Days By Staff Reporter Former member of the House of Representatives and chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Hon. Rotimi Makinde, has applauded President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, security agencies, and the Oyo State Government for their collaborative efforts that led to the successful rescue of abducted schoolchildren and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State. Makinde described the operation, which culminated in the release of the victims after 56 days in captivity, as a major milestone in Nigeria’s fight against insecurity and a strong indication that coordinated security strategies can yield meaningful results. The rescue operation, announced by the Presidency on July 10, 2026, brought an end to weeks of anxiety and uncertainty for families, communities, and stakeholders following the abduction of students and teachers from schools in the Ogbomoso axis of the state. Reacting to the development in a statement made available to journalists on Monday, Makinde said the successful rescue was not only a source of relief for the victims and their loved ones but also a significant boost to public confidence in the nation’s security institutions. According to him, the achievement demonstrated the effectiveness of cooperation between federal and state authorities in addressing security challenges and sends a clear signal to criminal elements that acts of terror and kidnapping will not be tolerated in Nigeria. “I sincerely commend the efforts of the Federal Government, the security agencies, and the people and government of Oyo State for this major breakthrough in securing the release of the abducted students and their teachers, who were held captive by violent terrorists for over 56 days,” he stated. Makinde noted that the operation reflected the determination of the Tinubu administration and the commitment of security agencies to protecting lives and restoring public safety, especially in vulnerable sectors such as education. While celebrating the release of the abductees, the former lawmaker expressed deep sadness over the death of Mr. Michael Oyedokun, a mathematics teacher who reportedly died while in captivity. He described the late teacher’s death as a painful tragedy that highlighted the dangers faced by educators and students amid growing security concerns across the country. “His death remains a painful reminder of the urgent need to safeguard our schools. Yet today, to the glory of God, the narrative has changed. I congratulate the Nigeria Union of Teachers on this hard-won victory and commend their patience, patriotism, and solidarity with their colleagues during this difficult time,” Makinde said. The death of the teacher had triggered widespread condemnation and heightened concerns over the safety of educational institutions, prompting the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) to embark on an indefinite strike in protest against insecurity in schools. Makinde acknowledged the emotional trauma endured by parents, families, government officials, and the affected communities during the prolonged captivity of the victims. He also praised Nigerians for their prayers, support, and resilience throughout the crisis. According to him, the successful outcome of the rescue mission was the result of sustained efforts, strategic engagement, and the unwavering commitment of all stakeholders involved in securing the victims’ freedom. The APC stalwart, however, urged authorities not to become complacent, stressing the need for sustained action against insecurity across the country. He called for improved intelligence gathering, stronger community-based security networks, and enhanced collaboration among security agencies to prevent future incidents of abduction and violence. Makinde further advocated greater investment in school security infrastructure and policies aimed at protecting students, teachers, and other vulnerable groups nationwide. “On the strength of this major breakthrough, I make a passionate appeal to the Government not to relent in stemming the tide of insecurity across every corner of our beloved country. Once again, I congratulate all Nigerians on this good news, and most importantly, I celebrate the abductees who came out alive and will soon reunite with their families,” he added. Observers say the successful rescue has renewed hope among citizens that persistent security challenges can be effectively tackled through coordinated efforts between governments, security agencies, communities, and other stakeholders. For many families affected by the abduction, the return of the students and teachers marks the end of a painful chapter and the beginning of a healing process, while the nation continues to reflect on the importance of safeguarding schools and ensuring that educational institutions remain safe havens for learning and development.

The group described the successful rescue as a major relief for the victims' families, the education sector, and residents of Oyo State, saying the operation has reinforced public confidence in the government's commitment to protecting lives and property. According to the statement, the governor's response reflected a leadership style that prioritises the welfare, security and dignity of the people. "The Governor's handling of the unfortunate incident once again reflects a leadership style that places the welfare, security and dignity of the people above every other consideration. This is the hallmark of responsive governance," the group stated. The ORC further noted that the Makinde administration has consistently prioritised security through sustained investments in security infrastructure, intelligence gathering, support for security agencies and community-based security initiatives aimed at preventing crime and ensuring public safety. While celebrating the safe return of the abducted teachers and pupils, the organisation also turned attention to the state's political future, urging residents to consolidate on what it described as the achievements of the present administration. The group endorsed the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Movement (APM), Hon. Bimbo Adekambi, describing him as the most suitable candidate to sustain the developmental strides and security architecture established under Governor Makinde. According to the ORC, electing Adekambi in the next governorship election would ensure continuity in responsible governance, strengthen the state's security framework and deepen people-oriented development policies. "The safe return of these innocent teachers and children is more than a successful security operation; it is a practical demonstration of what purposeful leadership can achieve. We believe the people of Oyo State should build upon this foundation by electing the APM governorship candidate, Bimbo Adekambi, in the forthcoming gubernatorial election. Such a decision will guarantee continuity in responsible leadership, strengthen the state's security framework and consolidate the developmental vision established by Governor Seyi Makinde," the statement added. The group also called on residents to continue supporting security agencies by providing timely intelligence, remaining vigilant and promoting peaceful coexistence in their communities. It stressed that security remains a collective responsibility requiring the active participation of government, security operatives and members of the public. The ORC concluded by congratulating the rescued teachers, pupils and their families on their safe return, expressing hope that Oyo State would continue to enjoy lasting peace, stability and sustained development under leaders committed to the welfare and security of the people. |
Northern Christians Hail Tinubu’s Nomination of Kashim Shettima as Running Mate The Middlebelt Pentecostal Association (MPA) has warmly welcomed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s decision to retain Vice President Kashim Shettima as his running mate for the 2027 presidential election. The group described the move as a demonstration of continuity, stability, and commitment to national development, announced shortly after the submission of nomination forms to the All Progressives Congress (APC) on Friday. In a statement issued in Abuja, MPA President Rev. Jolly Usman of the Grace Assembly praised the Tinubu-Shettima ticket, saying it reflects strategic leadership focused on addressing the challenges facing northern and Middle Belt communities. The endorsement comes despite past debates over religious balancing in national tickets, with the association emphasizing performance, governance, and unity over sectarian considerations. “We, the Middlebelt Pentecostal Association, wholeheartedly hail President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s nomination of Kashim Shettima as running mate for the 2027 election,” Rev. Usman stated. “This decision signals continuity in leadership and a clear commitment to the Renewed Hope Agenda that has begun transforming critical sectors across our nation. “As northern Christians, we have witnessed tangible progress under this administration, particularly in infrastructure, security initiatives in the Middle Belt, and efforts to bridge developmental gaps,” he added. “Shettima’s experience and dedication make him the right partner to consolidate these gains.” The MPA, a prominent body representing Pentecostal churches across the Middle Belt region, highlighted Shettima’s role in fostering interfaith dialogue and supporting humanitarian efforts in conflict-affected areas. Rev. Usman called on other Christian groups to assess the ticket based on deliverables rather than religious composition alone. “Vice President Shettima has demonstrated uncommon commitment to national cohesion. His collaboration with President Tinubu has yielded results in agriculture, education, and peace-building initiatives that directly benefit our communities,” the MPA president noted. “We urge all well-meaning Nigerians, especially in the North and Middle Belt, to support this ticket for sustained progress. “This is not about religion; it is about results. The Tinubu-Shettima administration has shown it can deliver for all Nigerians regardless of faith or ethnicity." The MPA leaders pointed to improved farmer-herder relations programs and infrastructure projects reaching remote areas as evidence of inclusive governance. Rev. Usman revealed that the association conducted consultations with member churches before issuing its position, arriving at a consensus that the current leadership duo offers the best chance for stability ahead of the polls. “Northern Christians under the MPA stand firmly with President Tinubu and Vice President Shettima. Their joint ticket represents hope for a more united, secure, and prosperous Nigeria,” Rev. Jolly Usman declared. “We have seen dedication to youth empowerment, which aligns with the aspirations of our young people across the Middle Belt. “We call on the APC to mobilize effectively and on all citizens to rally behind leaders who have proven their capacity to govern in challenging times,” he concluded. |
NYSC: Rep Member writes Tinubu, gives reasons drastic reforms require more inputs of stakeholders A member of the House of Representatives, Hon. Philip Agbese, has urged President Bola Tinubu to immediately suspend the sweeping reforms to the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) recently approved by the Federal Executive Council. Agbese, representing Ado/Okpokwu/Ogbadibo Federal Constituency and Deputy Spokesman of the 10th House of Representatives, described the changes as a dangerous shift that risks undermining the scheme’s core mandate of fostering national unity. In a private letter to the President which which was leaked to the media, Agbese expressed deep patriotic concern, arguing that the reforms—framed as innovation and modernization—threaten to transform the NYSC from a symbol of national cohesion into a stratified administrative program. He urged the President to halt implementation and convene a multi-disciplinary committee for thorough review, warning of potential damage to national security and cross-cultural integration. “It is with a deep sense of patriotic duty and genuine concern for the future of national cohesion that I write to your esteemed office,” Agbese stated. "As a committed believer in the Nigerian project, I have followed with alarm the recent Federal Executive Council (FEC) approval of sweeping reforms to the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC). "The framing of these changes as ‘innovation’ and ‘modernization’ masks a dangerous shift that risks transforming a vital symbol of national unity into a hyper-stratified administrative exercise. “The seven major pillars of the approved restructuring—transition to civilian operational leadership, extension of the orientation camp to six weeks, replacement of the traditional khaki uniform with Adire fabric, introduction of a structured three-phase training curriculum, pivot to skills-based deployment, automation of call-up processes, and institutionalization of formal graduation ceremonies—are fundamentally flawed,” he added. The lawmaker highlighted the replacement of military leadership with civilian oversight as particularly alarming. According to him, this move creates dangerous fragmentation in the command chain, especially since the scheme would still rely on military structures for security in high-risk areas. He emphasised that a civilian Director-General might lack the tactical experience and authority needed for rapid response during threats to corps members. Agbese further criticised the pivot toward skills-based deployment, saying it would institutionalize economic and social stratification by concentrating graduates from high-demand fields in urban centers while sending others to rural areas. This, he argued, abandons the principle of blind geographic randomization that has promoted inter-ethnic empathy for decades. “The most disturbing aspect is the replacement of military leadership with civilian leadership. Appointing a civilian Director-General while still relying on military structures for nationwide security creates dangerous fragmentation in the command chain,” Agbese wrote. “A civilian bureaucrat, however competent, lacks the tactical experience, direct access to the defence hierarchy, and inherent authority required to coordinate rapid-response operations when corps members face threats in high-risk areas. “The proposed ‘skills-based deployment’ framework is particularly troubling. By tying postings to academic disciplines and career streams instead of maintaining blind geographic randomization, the reform institutionalizes economic and social stratification,” he continued. The replacement of the iconic khaki uniform with Adire fabric also drew sharp criticism from the deputy spokesman. He described the traditional uniform as a powerful socio-economic equalizer that dissolves class and ethnic distinctions, and warned that the new localized fabric with variations in quality and pattern could encourage regional exceptionalism and ethnic silos. Agbese also questioned the wisdom of extending the orientation camp from three to six weeks, citing the enormous additional costs in an era of economic hardship. He argued that what should be a sharp paramilitary socialization experience risks becoming protracted and fatiguing, with little civic benefit. “The decision to replace the iconic khaki uniform with Adire fabric further codifies this fragmentation. For over five decades, the simple, identical khaki uniform has served as a powerful socio-economic equalizer,” the letter reads. “Introducing a localized, artisanal fabric with inherent variations in quality, pattern, and texture will erode this visual and psychological unity, inadvertently encouraging regional exceptionalism and ethnic silos. “In the current climate of economic hardship and budgetary constraints, the additional cost of housing, feeding, and providing medical care for millions of graduates for an extra three weeks is enormous, with little demonstrable civic benefit,” Agbese noted. The lawmaker portrayed the NYSC as a sacred national legacy born from the ashes of the civil war, designed specifically for radical national socialization rather than as a corporate talent incubator or skills-acquisition program. He insisted that the reforms contradict this historic mandate and could permanently weaken the threads of unity the scheme has woven since 1973. Agbese appealed directly to President Tinubu as the Grand Commander of the national heritage, urging an executive directive to halt the reforms and establish a high-level committee of historians, military strategists, constitutional lawyers, and other experts for comprehensive review. He stressed that Nigerian youths deserve measures that strengthen security, improve allowances, and reinforce the program’s identity instead of dismantling it. “The scheme was never intended to compensate for deficiencies in tertiary education or serve as a post-graduate vocational centre. It was deliberately designed as an instrument of radical national socialization — to pull young Nigerians from all backgrounds out of their ethno-geographic comfort zones and forge them into a shared civic identity through common service,” he explained. “Your Excellency, the NYSC is a sacred national legacy, born from the blood and ashes of a brutal civil war to heal and unite a fractured nation. It was never meant to become a cultural fashion showcase or a corporate finishing school,” Agbese declared. The letter concludes with a clarion call to protect the legacy of Nigeria’s founding fathers, safeguard the safety of the youth, and preserve the most important bridge across the nation’s fault lines. |
Adebutu Only Candidate Capable of Delivering True Dividends of Democracy to Ogun People – Toyin Amuzu By Our Correspondent The House of Representatives candidate of the People's Democratic Party (PDP) for Abeokuta South Federal Constituency, Hon. Chief Toyin Amuzu, has declared that the party's governorship candidate in Ogun State, Hon. Oladipupo Adebutu, remains the only candidate with the vision, competence and commitment to deliver the true dividends of democracy to the people of the state. Amuzu made the declaration while addressing party supporters and residents, urging the electorate to support the PDP governorship ticket of Adebutu and his running mate, Alhaja Yemi Kolapo-Showunmi, in the forthcoming election. According to him, the Adebutu-led administration would prioritize sectors that directly impact the welfare and prosperity of the people, including education, infrastructure, economic development and agriculture. He stated that quality education would receive adequate attention through improved funding, better learning facilities and policies aimed at expanding access to quality education across the state. The PDP House of Representatives candidate also emphasized that infrastructure development would be one of the cornerstones of the proposed administration, noting that investments in road construction, rural electrification, healthcare facilities and other public infrastructure would stimulate economic activities and improve the standard of living of residents. Speaking on economic development, Amuzu said Adebutu possesses a practical blueprint for creating employment opportunities, empowering young entrepreneurs and supporting small and medium-scale enterprises through policies designed to boost productivity and attract investments into Ogun State. He further noted that agriculture would receive significant attention under the PDP government, with farmers expected to benefit from accessible loans, improved access to farming inputs, modern agricultural techniques and continuous government support to enhance food production and strengthen the state's economy. According to him, providing financial assistance and necessary support to farmers would not only improve agricultural output but also create sustainable livelihoods for rural communities and contribute to food security. Amuzu described Adebutu as a compassionate and people-oriented leader with a proven record of philanthropy and commitment to public service, expressing confidence that his administration would ensure inclusive governance and equitable distribution of developmental projects across the state. He also commended the choice of Alhaja Yemi Kolapo-Showunmi as deputy governorship candidate, describing her as an experienced administrator whose wealth of experience would complement Adebutu's vision for a more prosperous Ogun State. The lawmaker hopeful therefore appealed to followers and party faithfuls to provide adequate supports, insisting that the party offers the most credible platform to reposition the state for sustainable growth and development. Amuzu expressed optimism that, with the support of the electorate, the PDP would usher in a new era of accountable governance, improved public service delivery and accelerated socio-economic development for the benefit of all residents of Ogun State.

CCRP Seeks Fresh Police Review of Ajiran Deaths Case, Urges Evidence-Based Investigation The Centre for Citizens Right Protection (CCRP) has called on the Inspector-General of Police to order a fresh, independent and comprehensive review of the investigation into the deaths of two persons in Ajiran Community, Lagos State, which led to the ongoing trial of Alhaji Tajudeen Akanbi. Addressing journalists at a press conference, Abe Emmanuel Kolawole and Isijola Samuel, who spoke on behalf of the group said its call was aimed at ensuring that justice is served through a thorough, impartial and evidence-driven investigation, rather than being influenced by speculation or public sentiment. The organisation stressed that it was neither seeking to shield anyone from criminal responsibility nor advocating the prosecution of any individual without credible evidence. According to the CCRP, while the deaths remain a tragic incident and the families of the deceased deserve justice, the accused is equally entitled to a fair trial and the constitutional presumption of innocence until proven guilty by a competent court. The group noted that recent public commentary by social media activist Martin Vincent Otse, popularly known as VDM, had generated national attention and raised questions about the circumstances surrounding the deaths, the handling of evidence and whether all relevant investigative leads were adequately explored. It clarified that it was not in a position to verify the allegations made by the activist or present them as established facts. However, it argued that where serious and specific claims emerge in relation to a pending criminal matter, they should be objectively examined in the interest of justice. According to the CCRP, VDM alleged that certain relatives of one of the deceased, including Babajide Akinloye and Haroon Akinloye, should be investigated over issues relating to events preceding the deaths and the handling of the deceased's phone and body. The group said these allegations should be subjected to professional investigation where there are credible grounds for further inquiry. The organisation maintained that the integrity of Nigeria's criminal justice system depends on thorough, impartial and professional investigations capable of inspiring public confidence. It therefore urged the Inspector-General of Police to constitute an independent investigative team comprising experienced homicide investigators and forensic experts to review the case file and examine any credible new information. According to the group, the proposed review should include a forensic re-evaluation of all physical, documentary and digital evidence connected to the case; a review of the original investigative procedures to determine whether every relevant line of inquiry was pursued; interviews or re-interviews of persons with material information; examination of allegations relating to the handling and preservation of evidence; assessment of whether any evidence was overlooked or compromised; and determination of whether further forensic examinations are necessary. The CCRP emphasised that its request should not be interpreted as an indictment of any individual but as a call for due diligence in the pursuit of justice. It also urged the Nigeria Police Force to objectively examine any credible allegations involving persons connected to the matter, including relatives of the deceased, while ensuring that no individual is investigated solely on the basis of social media commentary or public speculation. The group further called on prosecuting authorities to remain guided strictly by admissible evidence and not public pressure, while encouraging the defence team to continue presenting all relevant facts through lawful judicial processes. Expressing confidence in the judiciary, the CCRP said the court should continue to determine the case independently and fairly based on the evidence before it. It also appealed to the public, civil society organisations, the media and social commentators to exercise restraint and avoid actions capable of prejudicing the ongoing judicial proceedings. The organisation maintained that comprehensive, transparent and evidence-based investigations are essential to strengthening public confidence in the justice system. |
Why Adekanmbi is Best Positioned to Lead Oyo After Makinde ....My View on Oyo 2027, As the political atmosphere in Oyo State gradually shifts toward the 2027 governorship election, conversations across political circles, professional bodies, community associations and among ordinary citizens are increasingly revolving around one central question: who possesses the experience, competence and character required to sustain the remarkable developmental momentum established under Governor Seyi Makinde? Among the names frequently mentioned, one individual continues to command increasing attention, not merely because of political endorsements, but because of a career built on competence, fiscal discipline and administrative excellence. Honourable Abimbola Adekanmbi has steadily emerged as one of the most formidable personalities in the unfolding race for the Agodi Government House. Unlike conventional politicians whose public appeal is built on rhetoric, Adekanmbi's credentials have been forged in boardrooms, financial institutions, international consulting firms and the highest levels of public administration. His supporters believe these qualities distinguish him as a natural successor capable of consolidating rather than disrupting the developmental trajectory of Oyo State. Leadership in today's world demands far more than political popularity. It requires the ability to understand complex economic realities, formulate practical policies and manage scarce public resources with prudence. Adekanmbi's professional journey reflects this rare combination. An accomplished chartered accountant (FCCA), he received his foundational education at Oritamefa Baptist School, Ibadan, before attending Federal Government College, Okigwe and later Obafemi Awolowo University. Beyond his academic qualifications, he strengthened his professional competence through executive education and internationally recognised certifications. His professional career traversed several leading financial institutions, including Global Bank, MBC Bank and Liberty Bank. He subsequently moved into consulting, working with Accenture and later occupying strategic finance and payment systems positions in the United Kingdom, including Birmingham City Council. Returning to Nigeria, he rose to become Executive Director and Chief Financial Officer of a major commercial bank, further cementing his reputation as an accomplished financial strategist. This rare blend of international exposure, banking expertise, accounting proficiency and systems engineering provides a foundation that many analysts believe is invaluable for governing a modern state economy. Perhaps no portfolio better prepares a governor than the management of public finances. Between 2011 and 2019, under the administration of the late Governor Abiola Ajimobi, Adekanmbi served first as Deputy Chief of Staff before assuming the strategic office of Commissioner for Finance, Budget and Planning. Those years witnessed some of the most comprehensive fiscal reforms undertaken in Oyo State. As Commissioner, he was widely recognised as one of the principal architects of prudent financial management, responsible budgeting and improved fiscal coordination. His reputation became synonymous with accountability, strategic planning and disciplined expenditure management. Observers note that while many political leaders make ambitious promises, only a few possess the technical understanding necessary to convert those promises into sustainable development programmes. Adekanmbi belongs to this latter category. One of the strongest indicators of Adekanmbi's administrative value emerged after the political realignments that followed the 2023 elections. Having previously served under the All Progressives Congress (APC), he later joined the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). More significantly, Governor Seyi Makinde entrusted him with one of the state's most strategic infrastructure assignments, bthe chairmanship of the committee overseeing the upgrading of the Samuel Ladoke Akintola International Airport, Ibadan. Political analysts viewed the appointment as more than routine. It represented an acknowledgment that competence should transcend partisan divisions. For a governor widely regarded for prioritising performance to repose such confidence in a former opposition figure speaks volumes about Adekanmbi's reputation for professionalism, integrity and capacity to deliver. One of the greatest challenges facing Oyo State after 2027 will be balancing continuity with fresh ideas. Citizens are unlikely to support any leadership that abandons the developmental gains achieved under Governor Makinde. Equally, they expect the next administration to introduce innovative solutions that respond to emerging economic realities. Supporters argue that Adekanmbi uniquely embodies this balance. His years in the private sector exposed him to global best practices in finance, technology and organisational management. His years in government equipped him with practical understanding of public administration. His current assignments demonstrate his continuing relevance to the developmental vision of the present administration. Rather than beginning governance from scratch, he appears well positioned to consolidate ongoing reforms while introducing new approaches to industrialisation, revenue generation, infrastructure financing, digital governance and economic diversification. Modern politics often rewards spectacle. Yet history repeatedly demonstrates that enduring leadership is built on competence rather than constant publicity. Those who have worked closely with Adekanmbi consistently describe him as intelligent, calm, methodical and deeply committed to institutional development. He has cultivated a reputation for listening before speaking, studying before deciding and executing with precision. Such leadership qualities have become increasingly attractive to citizens seeking less political drama and more measurable governance outcomes. His humility, accessibility and preference for substance over sensationalism continue to resonate with many professionals, traditional institutions, community leaders and young people searching for credible leadership. Oyo State stands at a critical economic crossroads. Its expanding population, strategic location and agricultural potential present enormous opportunities, but they also demand sophisticated economic management. Adekanmbi's background as a financial expert positions him to approach governance from the perspective of investment attraction, fiscal sustainability and long-term planning. His experience in banking, consulting and international financial systems could prove instrumental in strengthening internally generated revenue without imposing unnecessary burdens on citizens. Likewise, his understanding of public-private partnerships may accelerate investments in transportation, housing, agriculture, healthcare, education and industrial development. For many stakeholders, these competencies represent exactly the kind of leadership required to transform Oyo into one of Nigeria's leading investment destinations. Politics ultimately succeeds when it improves the lives of ordinary people. Throughout his public engagements, Adekanmbi has consistently emphasised governance centred on people, particularly the underprivileged. Supporters frequently cite his commitment to inclusive development, grassroots engagement and institutional reforms designed to create lasting opportunities rather than temporary political patronage. His philosophy reflects a belief that government should function as an enabler of prosperity rather than merely an administrator of public resources. Governor Seyi Makinde's administration has earned national recognition for significant investments in infrastructure, education, healthcare, agriculture and economic expansion. The challenge before Oyo voters is not simply selecting another governor. It is choosing a leader capable of preserving these achievements while expanding them. For many observers, Adekanmbi's combination of professional excellence, public sector experience, financial expertise and demonstrated administrative competence makes him one of the strongest candidates to achieve that objective. His appointment to critical assignments under the present administration has reinforced public confidence that he understands the policy direction already established and possesses the technical ability to deepen its impact. Ultimately, elections are decided by the electorate rather than political endorsements. However, as conversations about succession continue across Oyo State, one reality remains increasingly evident. Honourable Abimbola Adekanmbi brings together an uncommon combination of private-sector excellence, international exposure, fiscal discipline, administrative experience and public service credibility. If Oyo State seeks continuity without stagnation, innovation without unnecessary experimentation, and leadership grounded in competence rather than mere political theatrics, many believe Adekanmbi represents a compelling option. In an era when governance is increasingly judged by measurable outcomes rather than campaign slogans, his career suggests that he possesses not only the qualifications to govern, but also the experience to consolidate the developmental gains of today while laying the foundation for an even more prosperous Oyo State tomorrow. From Waste Crisis to Environmental Renewal: How Farouk Akintunde Is Repositioning OGWAMA for a Cleaner Ogun By Solanke Ayomideji Taiwo When Alhaji Farouk Adeniyi Akintunde assumed office as the Managing Director and Special Adviser overseeing the Ogun State Waste Management Authority (OGWAMA), he inherited an agency weighed down by years of operational setbacks, mounting refuse backlogs, deteriorating equipment, and growing public dissatisfaction. Today, a different narrative is gradually emerging. Driven by the environmental sustainability agenda of Governor Prince Dapo Abiodun, the Akintunde-led administration has embarked on far-reaching reforms that are redefining waste management in Ogun State through aggressive sanitation campaigns, strengthened enforcement of environmental laws, institutional reforms, improved staff welfare, equipment rehabilitation, and strategic international partnerships. Although financial challenges remain, the agency's renewed momentum has begun restoring public confidence while laying the foundation for a cleaner, healthier, and more environmentally sustainable Ogun State. Clearing Years of Waste Backlogs One of the administration's earliest priorities was addressing the enormous volume of accumulated refuse across major cities and communities. Recognising the urgency of the sanitation challenge, OGWAMA immediately resumed large-scale waste evacuation operations and reinstated night-time waste collection services to improve efficiency while reducing traffic disruptions during the day. Massive clearance exercises were carried out across major roads, markets, drainage channels, public spaces, and residential areas that had suffered years of accumulated waste. The impact quickly became visible in Abeokuta, Sango-Ota, Ijebu-Ode, Sagamu, and several fast-growing communities, where cleaner streets and improved environmental conditions reinforced public confidence in the agency's renewed direction. The administration also undertook the rehabilitation of the Saje dumpsite in Abeokuta and the Kurata dumpsite in Ota while introducing sustained monthly maintenance for dumpsites across the state to ensure improved waste disposal and environmental safety. Restoring Operational Capacity Beyond refuse evacuation, the current management has invested significantly in rebuilding the agency's operational strength. Several waste compactors and operational trucks that had remained moribund for years were refurbished and returned to service, significantly boosting OGWAMA's capacity to respond promptly to waste collection across the state. To further strengthen waste disposal infrastructure, the administration procured and distributed waste bins to the Ogun State Government Secretariat at Oke-Mosan as well as several Ministries, Departments and Agencies outside the secretariat complex. These interventions have enhanced waste collection efficiency while promoting cleaner public institutions. The office complex of the authority has also undergone gradual renovation, creating a more conducive working environment that reflects the administration's commitment to institutional renewal. Prioritising Staff Welfare Recognising that effective service delivery begins with a motivated workforce, Alhaji Farouk Akintunde has prioritised staff welfare since assuming office. Employees have benefited from improved working conditions, the provision of essential operational tools, and a more conducive workplace environment. These investments have boosted staff morale and strengthened the agency's capacity to deliver efficient sanitation services across Ogun State. Strengthening Environmental Law Enforcement A defining hallmark of the present administration has been its uncompromising enforcement of environmental regulations. Understanding that sustainable waste management requires both efficient service delivery and public accountability, OGWAMA intensified its crackdown on indiscriminate refuse disposal, illegal dumping, and open burning of waste. Within a relatively short period, the agency arrested over one hundred offenders for violating environmental sanitation laws, while several industries found contravening environmental regulations were sanctioned through environmental and mobile courts. Markets that failed to comply with prescribed sanitation standards were temporarily shut until corrective measures were implemented. Likewise, industrial facilities involved in illegal waste burning or operating without engaging approved Private Sector Participants (PSPs) faced sanctions. These decisive actions have reinforced environmental discipline and sent a clear message that environmental abuse will no longer be tolerated regardless of status or institution. Driving Sustainable Waste Management Perhaps one of the most forward-looking aspects of the current administration has been its commitment to moving beyond conventional waste collection towards a circular economy. Working closely with the Ogun State Ministry of Environment and international development partners, particularly the Kingdom of the Netherlands, OGWAMA has embraced innovative waste management initiatives focused on resource recovery, recycling, and sustainable environmental practices. Special attention has been devoted to electronic waste and hazardous waste management, two rapidly emerging environmental concerns requiring modern and sustainable solutions. These collaborations position Ogun State among Nigeria's leading sub-national governments adopting global best practices in environmental sustainability and green economic development. Strengthening Institutional Confidence The administration has equally focused on rebuilding confidence in the agency through inclusive stakeholder engagement and improved operational coordination. Regular consultations now involve community leaders, environmental experts, waste operators, and Private Sector Participants aimed at improving service delivery and institutional transparency. Although differences have naturally arisen regarding licensing reforms and operational restructuring, the management has continued to pursue dialogue while implementing policies designed to strengthen the waste management system for long-term sustainability. Many stakeholders have acknowledged the renewed professionalism, responsiveness, and sense of purpose now evident within the agency. Navigating Financial Challenges Like many public institutions operating within Nigeria's challenging economic climate, OGWAMA continues to contend with significant financial constraints. Private Sector Participants have raised concerns over rising diesel costs, delayed payments, and the increasing cost of waste collection operations. Despite these pressures, the management has maintained uninterrupted sanitation services while engaging operators through dialogue and strategic planning to sustain service delivery. The administration's resilience under difficult financial conditions reflects its commitment to safeguarding public health and environmental standards across Ogun State. A Vision Taking Shape Environmental sanitation has become an increasingly important pillar of economic development, public health, tourism, and urban planning. Under the leadership of Alhaji Farouk Adeniyi Akintunde, OGWAMA has demonstrated that decisive leadership, institutional reforms, strategic partnerships, improved operational efficiency, and strict enforcement can transform public institutions even amid financial limitations. The achievements recorded so far—including the evacuation of long-standing refuse backlogs, rehabilitation of major dumpsites, refurbishment of operational equipment, improved staff welfare, enhanced sanitation enforcement, increased compliance by businesses and markets, provision of waste bins to public institutions, international collaborations, and the promotion of circular economy initiatives—represent significant milestones in Ogun State's environmental journey. While challenges remain, particularly in funding waste management operations and strengthening collaboration with private operators, the trajectory established by the current administration suggests that OGWAMA is steadily evolving into a more efficient, responsive, and forward-looking institution. It is therefore unsurprising that many residents, community groups, and organisations have commended Governor Dapo Abiodun for what they describe as "putting the right peg in the right hole" through the appointment of Alhaji Farouk Adeniyi Akintunde to lead the state's waste management authority. As Ogun State continues to pursue its developmental aspirations, the ongoing reforms at OGWAMA are providing a solid foundation for cleaner cities, healthier communities, stronger environmental governance, and a more sustainable future for generations to come.

Judge Orders Hammed Tajudeen Akanbi to Continue Medical Treatment in Hospital Justice A.T. Muyideen today ordered that Hammed Tajudeen Akanbi be returned to the hospital to continue his medical treatment following his arraignment on charges of conspiracy and murder. Akanbi, who was brought to court in an ambulance and wheeled into the courtroom in a wheelchair, was arraigned on a two-count charge of conspiracy and murder. He pleaded not guilty to both counts. The court recalled that on 25 June 2025, Justice Muyideen had ordered that Akanbi be remanded at the Ikoyi Correctional Centre. However, the correctional authorities reportedly declined to admit him because of his critical health condition. Justice Muyideen expressed displeasure over the correctional authorities’ failure to comply with the court’s order. The judge explained that, upon realizing the severity of Akanbi’s medical condition and learning that he had allegedly been abandoned in an ambulance by both the police and correctional authorities, the court issued a subsequent order directing that he be remanded at the police medical facility. According to the judge, humanity had to prevail, which informed the court’s decision to ensure that Akanbi received appropriate medical attention. The court was, however, unable to hear the bail applications filed on behalf of Akanbi and the other defendants, as the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) maintained that the prosecution was still within the time allowed to file its response. Justice Muyideen advised counsel for the defendants to approach a vacation judge for the hearing of the bail applications. He also ordered that Akanbi be returned to the hospital to continue his treatment. The case was adjourned for trial to 3, 5, 10, 19, and 25 November 2026.

Protest Rocks Lagos Judiciary Over Conduct of Justice A.T. Muyideen Against Hammed Tajudeen Akanbi A protest erupted at the Lagos State Judiciary following the controversial conduct of Honourable Justice A.T. Muyideen of the Lagos State High Court in relation to the case involving Alhaji Hammed Tajudeen Akanbi. The controversy stems from the events of 25 June 2026, when Justice Muyideen ordered the remand of Akanbi at the Ikoyi Correctional Centre despite his critical medical condition. Akanbi was reportedly brought to the court premises in an ambulance and placed on oxygen support. The court allegedly declined to consider the medical report tendered before it, as well as the oral evidence presented by the medical practitioner who accompanied him. According to earlier reports, upon Akanbi’s arrival at the Ikoyi Correctional Centre, correctional authorities refused to admit him because of his deteriorating health condition. This reportedly resulted in a disagreement between the correctional authorities and the police officers escorting him. Following the intervention of the Chief Judge of Lagos State, who was on an official visit to the correctional facility, Justice Muyideen subsequently issued another remand order directing that Akanbi remain in police hospital. Before this intervention, Akanbi was allegedly abandoned by the police in an ambulance along Oba Akinjobi Way for more than five hours. On Tuesday, a civil society organisation, Center for Citizens Rights Protection led by its Convener, Abe Emmanuel Kolawole, and its Secretary, Samuel Isijola, in conjunction with members of the Ojomu Royal Family of Ajiran in Eti-Osa Local Government Area of Lagos State, defied a heavy downpour to stage a peaceful protest at the premises of the Ikeja High Court. The protesters demanded that Justice A.T. Muyideen recuse himself from the matter, alleging arbitrary exercise of judicial authority, bias, and compromise on the part of the judge. A petition addressed to the Chief Judge of Lagos State was presented to the Chief Judge’s representative, who received the delegation. In the petition, the protesters urged the Chief Judge to: 1. Direct that the criminal proceedings involving Alhaji Hammed Tajudeen Akanbi be transferred from the court of Honourable Justice A.T. Muyideen to another Judge of the High Court of Lagos State in the interest of justice and public confidence. 2. Institute an independent administrative investigation into the conduct of Honourable Justice A.T. Muyideen during the proceedings complained of. 3. Impose such disciplinary or administrative sanctions as may be found appropriate if the investigation establishes any misconduct or breach of the judicial oath. 4. Make any further orders Your Lordship considers necessary to preserve the integrity of the judicial process and safeguard the constitutional rights of the defendant. The protesters maintained that their demands were aimed at ensuring transparency, fairness, and public confidence in the administration of justice in Lagos State.

Lawyer Raises Alarm Over Alleged Threat to Hammed Tajudeen Akanbi's Life in Police Custody ### Says defendant was abandoned in ambulance, left without police guard despite deteriorating health LAGOS — A member of the defence team representing Hammed Tajudeen Akanbi has expressed concern over what he described as a possible threat to his client's life while in police custody, alleging that recent developments have heightened fears previously expressed by the defendant's family. The concerns followed proceedings before Hon. Justice A.T. Muyideen of the Lagos State High Court on Thursday, June 25, 2026. According to the defence, Akanbi, who is facing criminal prosecution, was transported to court in an ambulance and placed on oxygen support due to his deteriorating health. The court subsequently ordered that he be remanded at the Ikoyi Correctional Centre. However, the defence said officials at the correctional facility declined to admit the defendant, citing his medical condition, and instructed the police to return him to their custody. Following the development, the court reportedly issued a fresh directive ordering the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, to retain Akanbi in police custody. Despite the court's order, the defence alleged that the defendant was abandoned inside an ambulance for more than four hours along Oba Akinjobi Way, Ikeja, before he was eventually admitted to the Police Hospital, Ikeja, at about 9:00 p.m. Speaking after visiting his client on Friday evening, one of the lead defence counsel, Adedotun Ajulo, Esq., expressed concern over what he described as the absence of security around the defendant. "I visited my client at about 8:00 p.m. and was shocked to discover that there was no armed police officer stationed with him," Ajulo said. The lawyer noted that Akanbi had previously been under constant armed guard while receiving treatment at the Police Hospital from June 14 and was escorted to court by more than 20 armed police officers. "The sudden withdrawal of security at this critical stage raises serious concerns about his safety," he stated. Ajulo further alleged that his client has remained in custody for over 60 days, adding that members of Akanbi's family have consistently maintained that their fear was not merely prosecution but what they described as a systematic attempt to end his life. "The present circumstances appear to reinforce those fears," the lawyer said. He called on the Lagos State Government, the Nigeria Police Force, and other relevant authorities to ensure that the defendant's constitutional right to life is protected while in custody. As of the time of filing this report, the Lagos State Police Command had not issued any official response to the allegations made by the defence counsel. Editor's Note: The allegations contained in this report are those of the defendant's legal representatives. The Nigeria Police Force has not publicly responded to the claims at the time of publication.

Judge Orders Remand of Accused Person Not Produced Before Court Lagos, June 25, 2026 — Justice A.T. Muyideen of the Lagos State High Court on Thursday ordered the remand of Hammed Tajudeen Akanbi despite the accused person not being physically presented before the court. Akanbi, who has reportedly been receiving treatment at the Police Hospital for more than 14 days due to a critical medical condition, was brought to the court premises in an ambulance and remained on oxygen support. Owing to his condition, he was unable to enter the courtroom. When the matter was called, only the two other accused persons, Fatai Shafi and Yusuf Ismaila, were presented before the court. Despite being informed of Akanbi's medical condition and the fact that he remained in an ambulance outside the courtroom, Justice Muyideen ordered that he be remanded at the Ikoyi Correctional Centre pending his arraignment. The court was also informed that the charge sheet, information and proof of evidence were served on Akanbi's legal team in court. It was further brought to the attention of the court that there was a subsisting order permitting Akanbi to remain in a police medical facility because of his health condition. During proceedings, the judge reportedly asked medical personnel present in court whether Akanbi was dead and stated that only his death would prevent the court from remanding him in prison. A doctor who accompanied Akanbi from the Police Hospital was not allowed to address the court, while a medical report detailing the defendant's condition was not admitted. The Lagos State Director of Public Prosecutions, Haroun Adebayo, urged the court to proceed with the remand application. Justice Muyideen subsequently adjourned the matter until July 3, 2026, for arraignment. In a dramatic twist, Akanbi was reportedly rejected by officials of the Ikoyi Correctional Centre upon arrival at the facility. Following an examination by the correctional facility's medical team, authorities declined to admit him, maintaining that his condition made him unfit for custody within the facility. The development reportedly sparked a heated disagreement between police officers and correctional officials over responsibility for the defendant's custody. The correctional authorities stood by their decision not to admit him, while the police officers later left the facility. As of the time of filing this report, Akanbi's whereabouts remained unknown.

MR GOVERNOR, YOU ARE FAILING FAST The latest State Performance Index (PSPI) ranking released by Phillips Consulting has once again raised serious concerns about the direction, priorities and overall performance of the Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa administration in Ondo State. More significantly, it exposed the widening gap between the promises of the administration and the harsh realities confronting the people of Ondo State. In the latest ranking, several States, including Lagos, Abia, Ogun, Kaduna, Niger and Adamawa, received commendable ratings for governance and development performance. Their impressive showing underscores what is possible when leadership is guided by vision, strategic planning and effective service delivery - areas in which Ondo State appears to be falling behind. While these States continue to record measurable progress and improve the quality of life of their citizens, Ondo State appears to be moving in the opposite direction. According to Phillips Consulting, the 2025 edition introduced a revised methodology designed to place greater emphasis on measurable outcomes and objective performance indicators. Between 2021 and 2023, Ondo State maintained a relatively stable position in the development ranking of Nigerian states, hovering around the 11th and 12th positions nationally. But all that is now in the past. Despite the huge increase in Ondo State's monthly share from the Federation Account following the removal of petrol subsidy by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the State has continued to slide down the ladder of national development rankings, raising troubling questions about how its growing resources are being managed. Data from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) revealed that between January and August 2025, Ondo State received a total sum of ₦171.85 billion in FAAC allocations. It is rather pathetic that despite the astronomical increase in the amount of money received by Ondo State, the State continues to drift backwards in critical development indices. What makes the situation even more troubling is that available fiscal indicators suggest that Ondo State possesses the resources to perform much better. According to the Public Sector Performance Index (PSPI), Ondo State ranks 9th nationally in Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) per capita, 8th in IGR-to-FAAC ratio, 11th in IGR per square kilometre, and 14th in capital expenditure per capita. These figures indicate that the State is not entirely lacking in fiscal capacity. Yet, the impact of these resources is scarcely reflected in the daily lives of ordinary citizens. For the record, between 2021 and 2025, Ondo State maintained a relatively stable position in the upper-middle tier of Nigerian States, ranking around the 11th and 12th positions nationally in the Subnational Human Development Index. While a State like Abia, which once occupied the 36th position, has risen dramatically to 10th place in the latest ranking, Ondo State, with its enormous human and natural resources, appears stuck in reverse gear. In the 2025 edition of the Performance Ranking Index conducted by another organisation, PCI, Ondo State did not fare any better. In the overall performance data ranking by PCI, Ondo State was listed in 28th position for 2024. For 2025, the rating organisation utilised two critical measurement tools, Public Perception Rank and Performance Data Rank. At the end of the exercise, Ondo State ranked 22nd and 30th respectively. In overall performance, it placed 27th. Of course, this should not surprise anyone. For long, people with discerning minds have cried out over the seeming planlessness and clueless manner in which the Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa administration has governed the State since he took over following the passing of the late Governor Rotimi Akeredolu. Decisions made by the administration have often appeared devoid of any sure-footed strategy, leaving the State and its people in the unfortunate and sordid backyard of development. In most cases, whenever the governor makes a decision, it is usually one that does not prioritise the critical needs of the people. Critical sectors that directly impact the well-being of the people continue to receive little or no attention. From security to education and healthcare, the story has largely remained the same. The people and residents of Akure North Local Government Area, in particular, will tell you horror stories of their experiences, some of which have reportedly led to the loss of lives. The PSPI citizen satisfaction report further exposes the depth of public frustration. Ondo State ranked 33rd nationally in citizens' satisfaction with roads, with only 13 per cent expressing satisfaction. The State ranked 32nd in public education, 32nd in access to clean water, 29th in environmental cleanliness, and 32nd in awareness of government policies and programmes. Even in the assessment of honesty among public servants, Ondo ranked 32nd, with only 25 per cent of citizens expressing satisfaction. These are not opposition figures. They are independent assessments reflecting how citizens perceive the impact of governance on their daily lives. Perhaps the most pathetic sector in the state remains the health sector. The 2025 State Performance Index ranking by StatiSense, a leading AI data company specialising in financial report analysis, bank statement evaluation and AI-driven analytics, ranked Ondo State among Nigeria's worst-rated states for public hospital care. Ondo State ranked 35th out of the 36 States assessed, with the rankings based on the percentage of residents satisfied with the quality of public hospitals in their respective states. According to StatiSense, a breakdown of various sector reports highlighted the following reality. The miserable percentage of citizens satisfied with public hospital services in Ondo State placed it near the bottom of the national ranking in 35th position. In the General Healthcare System assessment, which measured infrastructure, specialist care capacity and budget allocation, Ondo ranked 17th nationally. This contradiction is perhaps the most revealing. A State may possess healthcare infrastructure on paper, but if citizens remain dissatisfied with service delivery, then government must ask itself hard questions. While the State accounts for 824 public and private hospitals and clinics, it remains an indisputable fact that many government hospitals across the State function largely as consulting centres where poor and sick citizens receive prescriptions and are subsequently directed to nearby pharmacies to purchase the prescribed drugs. It is therefore not surprising that millions of citizens and residents in rural communities have resorted to the use of herbs and self-medication. Woe betide anyone faced with a serious medical emergency. Recently, a non-political organisation, the Ondo Redemption Front, raised an alarm over the worsening state of healthcare delivery in the State. The alarm followed the release of a State Performance Index ranking which placed Ondo State among Nigeria's worst-rated States for public hospital care. Ondo Redemption Front is not alone in the cry for better and people-oriented programmes from the State government. From Akure to Igbokoda, from Ikare-Akoko to Owo, from Okitipupa to the riverine communities of Ilaje and Ese-Odo, the people are asking Governor Aiyedatiwa for reprieve from the biting hardship imposed on them by what many perceive as the government's lack of a coherent policy direction. The reality is that governance is not measured by speeches, ceremonies, media appearances or political endorsements. Governance is measured by results. It is measured by the quality of roads people drive on, the schools their children attend, the hospitals they depend upon in times of need, the security they enjoy, and the opportunities available for businesses and young people to thrive. Today, the available evidence suggests that despite improved revenues and stronger fiscal capacity, Ondo State is failing to maximise its enormous potential and deliver commensurate development outcomes for its people. The various rankings, citizen satisfaction reports and development indicators all point to one uncomfortable truth, the State is underperforming relative to the resources at its disposal. Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa still has time to change the narrative. However, doing so will require more than political rhetoric. It will require vision, strategic planning, prudent management of public resources and an unwavering commitment to policies that directly improve the lives of ordinary citizens - qualities that are evidently lacking in his administration's approach to governance. The warning signs are already flashing. Independent rankings are sounding the alarm. Citizens are expressing their dissatisfaction. Development indicators are sending a clear message. The question is whether the government is listening. Unfortunately, all indications suggest that it is not. The tragedy is that this decline is not occurring because Ondo State lacks resources, talent or opportunities. Rather, it is the consequence of a leadership deficit, characterised by a lack of vision, strategic direction and the capacity to translate resources into meaningful development outcomes. Such shortcomings have become increasingly evident in Governor Aiyedatiwa's approach to governance. History will not remember how much money entered the coffers of Ondo State during this era. It will remember what Governor Aiyedatiwa did with that money. Judging by the current trajectory, that verdict may not be kind to him. And unless urgent corrective action is taken, the judgment of history could prove far harsher than the verdict already being rendered by independent performance rankings and the people of Ondo State themselves. TEAM ELEGBEJI RALLIES REMO FOR CONTINUITY, SETS AGENDA FOR GREATER DEVELOPMENT SAGAMU, OGUN STATE — Political leaders, grassroots mobilizers, youth representatives, women leaders, and key stakeholders from across Remo Federal Constituency on Monday gathered under the platform of Team Elegbeji to reaffirm their commitment to the continued representation of Hon. Dr. Adesola Ayoola Elegbeji in the House of Representatives. The strategic meeting, held under the theme “Solidarity for Continuity,” drew participants from the three local government areas that make up the constituency—Sagamu, Ikenne, and Remo North—and focused on strengthening political structures, reviewing developmental strides, and charting a course for sustained progress across the federal constituency. The gathering was marked by a strong sense of purpose and unity, with participants emphasizing the need to consolidate ongoing developmental initiatives and maintain what they described as a responsive and people-centered representation at the National Assembly. According to speakers at the meeting, the event went beyond political consultation and served as a platform to assess achievements, gather grassroots feedback, and prepare for the next phase of constituency engagement. Participants highlighted several interventions credited to Hon. Elegbeji’s tenure, including women empowerment initiatives, youth skills acquisition programmes, educational support schemes, healthcare interventions, and advocacy for infrastructure projects. Many attendees argued that the constituency had witnessed increased visibility and access to federal opportunities since her election and warned against disrupting ongoing efforts aimed at addressing local challenges. Addressing the gathering, party leaders and community representatives stressed that continuity should be viewed as a strategy for preserving and expanding developmental gains rather than a personal political project. Several ward coordinators presented reports from their respective communities, while youth leaders outlined training and employment opportunities facilitated through the lawmaker’s office. Women leaders also spoke on empowerment programmes that have reportedly impacted traders and small business owners across the constituency. One of the recurring themes during the meeting was the belief that sustainable development requires consistency in leadership and long-term planning. Speakers noted that Hon. Elegbeji’s legislative activities, constituency outreach programmes, and accessibility to constituents had contributed to growing confidence among residents. Participants maintained that her representation had helped amplify the voice of Remo Federal Constituency at the national level, while creating channels through which federal interventions could be attracted to the area. At the conclusion of deliberations, Team Elegbeji adopted a three-point resolution aimed at strengthening its political and grassroots engagement strategy. The first resolution emphasized unity among all political structures and supporters across the constituency. Participants pledged to work collectively and avoid actions capable of creating divisions within the movement. Secondly, the group resolved to intensify sensitization efforts at the grassroots level through increased engagement with residents in wards, polling units, markets, and communities. The objective, according to organizers, is to educate constituents on the benefits of policy continuity and sustained representation. The third resolution focused on a renewed commitment to people-oriented governance, with participants advocating expanded investments in healthcare, education, youth employment, entrepreneurship support, and social welfare programmes. Supporters of the lawmaker argued that continuity would provide the opportunity to complete ongoing projects, attract additional federal interventions, and deepen developmental initiatives already underway. They expressed confidence that sustained representation would translate into more educational scholarships, greater support for small and medium-scale enterprises, improved infrastructure, and increased opportunities for women and young people. As the meeting drew to a close, attendees reiterated their support for the continuity agenda, describing it as a pathway toward preserving the developmental momentum already established within the constituency. The event ended with prayers and renewed commitments from stakeholders to remain united in pursuit of what they described as a shared vision for the advancement of Remo Federal Constituency. For Team Elegbeji, the message emerging from the gathering was clear: unity, continuity, and sustained development remain central to the future aspirations of the people of Remo Federal Constituency. |
APC Defections to PDP Signal Growing Confidence Ahead of 2027 Elections — Toyin Amuzu .....Charges Ogun youths on PVC collection, securing of votes in 2027 general election By Solanke Ayomideji Taiwo ABEOKUTA — The House of Representatives candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Toyin Amuzu, has described the recent wave of defections from the All Progressives Congress (APC) to the PDP as a clear indication that the opposition party is gaining momentum and positioning itself strongly for victory in the 2027 general elections. Amuzu made this known while reacting to the decision of several APC members to join the PDP, describing the development as a positive sign of growing public confidence in the party's vision and leadership. According to him, the increasing number of politicians and supporters aligning with the PDP demonstrates that Nigerians, particularly residents of Ogun State, are eager for a new direction and better governance. "The recent defections into the Peoples Democratic Party are a strong indication that our party is moving forward. It shows that people are beginning to identify with our ideals and are ready to work with us to build a better future for Ogun State and Nigeria as a whole," Amuzu stated. The PDP chieftain also extended his congratulations to the party's Ogun Central Senatorial candidate, Senator Iyabo Obasanjo-Bello, and the deputy governorship flagbearer, Alhaja Dr. Yemi Kolapo-Showunmi, for what he described as their unwavering commitment to the party and its mission. He commended both leaders for their dedication, resilience and contributions towards strengthening the PDP's presence across the state, expressing confidence that their efforts would contribute significantly to the party's electoral success. Amuzu further urged party members and supporters to remain united and focused on the task ahead, stressing that collective efforts would be required to achieve the desired political transformation in the state. Addressing the electorate, he called on eligible voters across Ogun State to obtain their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) and actively participate in the democratic process. He emphasized that the power to determine the future of the state and the nation rests with the people, urging citizens not only to register and collect their PVCs but also to safeguard their votes during future elections. "I appeal to the good people of Ogun State to ensure they obtain their Permanent Voter Cards and prepare to participate fully in the forthcoming elections. Every vote matters, and citizens must be ready to protect their votes to ensure that their voices are heard," he said. The PDP stalwart expressed optimism that the party would continue to attract more supporters and strengthen its structures ahead of the 2027 elections, maintaining that the growing support base reflects widespread desire for responsive leadership and improved governance. Political observers believe that the recent movement of politicians across party lines may reshape the political landscape in Ogun State as parties begin strategic preparations for the next electoral cycle. As political activities gradually gather momentum ahead of 2027, stakeholders are expected to intensify grassroots mobilization efforts, with voter education and participation likely to play crucial roles in determining the outcome of future elections.

'Wild Goose Chase': Ajadi Slams Olanrewaju Sowunmi Over Anti-Yayi Remarks, Says Ogun APC Remains United By Solanke Ayomideji Taiwo ABEOKUTA — A prominent supporter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate in Ogun State, Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola (Yayi), has launched a scathing attack on former party member Olanrewaju Sowunmi, accusing him of embarking on a "wild goose chase" and engaging in political opportunism following his recent criticism of the ruling party and its 2027 governorship standard-bearer. In a statement issued on behalf of the Yayi Statewide Support Group, Convener Alhaji Fasiu Olaniyi Ajadi described Sowunmi's comments against the APC and Senator Adeola as unfortunate and misleading, alleging that the former party stalwart had chosen to jeopardize his political future by aligning with what he termed uncertain political ventures. Ajadi said Sowunmi's conduct was particularly disappointing given the opportunities he had enjoyed within the APC, including his appointment into public office by the Ogun State Government. "It is unfortunate that a young man who benefited immensely from the party and served as an appointee of the State Governor would now seek to disparage the same political platform that played a significant role in his political growth and development," Ajadi stated. The APC supporter maintained that the ruling party remains committed to democratic ideals, fairness, equity, and justice, stressing that these principles informed the decision to zone the party's governorship ticket to Ogun West and ultimately support Senator Adeola as its candidate for the 2027 election. According to him, the APC's choice of Adeola reflects the party's determination to field a candidate it considers highly qualified and broadly acceptable across the state. Ajadi further claimed that contrary to suggestions of discontent within the party, APC leaders, former governorship aspirants, and stakeholders from Ogun Central and other parts of the state have rallied behind Adeola's candidacy. "Today, all former gubernatorial aspirants, party leaders, and critical stakeholders across Ogun Central and the state are united in support of Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola and are working tirelessly to ensure his victory in the February 2027 governorship election," he said. The Yayi support group convener dismissed Sowunmi's departure from the APC as a personal political decision rather than evidence of any crisis within the party, describing it as a reflection of "instability of character" and political inconsistency. He alleged that Sowunmi had been influenced by promises and inducements from his new political associates, choosing what he called short-term political gains over loyalty to the party that nurtured him. Ajadi also claimed that a prominent son of Egbaland had previously rejected a substantial financial offer to become a deputy governorship candidate under another political platform, saying the decision demonstrated integrity and commitment to principle. While he did not disclose the identity of the individual involved, Ajadi suggested that not all politicians exhibit the same level of restraint when confronted with financial incentives. Reaffirming support for Senator Adeola, Ajadi emphasized the lawmaker's maternal connection to Egbaland and highlighted what he described as the senator's longstanding contributions to the development of Ogun State. He portrayed Adeola as a self-made politician with a strong record of empowering people across different segments of society, insisting that the APC candidate enjoys widespread acceptance among residents of Ogun Central and Egbaland. "Ogun Central and the people of Egbaland remain united in their support for our son, Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola (Yayi), who has consistently contributed to the growth and development of Egbaland and Ogun State," Ajadi said. As political activities gradually intensify ahead of the 2027 governorship election, Ajadi called on residents of Ogun State to remain steadfast in their support for the APC and Senator Adeola, expressing confidence that the candidate possesses the vision, experience, and leadership qualities required to usher the state into a new era of growth and prosperity. The exchange marks another chapter in the evolving political landscape ahead of the 2027 Ogun governorship contest, with parties and stakeholders already positioning themselves for what observers expect to be a fiercely contested election. — Ends — |
Ogun AG Drops Charges Against Philanthropist, Husband Over Woman's Death The Ogun State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice has declined to prosecute Chief (Mrs.) Dorcas Adeyinka and Mr. Suraju Ashimiyu over allegations relating to the death of Ms. Folunsho Olayinka, effectively bringing the criminal case against them to an end. The development followed a review of the police investigation report, witness statements, exhibits and medical findings submitted to the Ministry of Justice for legal advice. According to a statement issued on Tuesday by Yakubu Eleto Chambers, solicitors to the two defendants, the Attorney-General found no basis to commence prosecution against either of them and consequently discharged and dismissed the charges. The case, filed as Charge No. AB/46C/2025, had accused Adeyinka and Ashimiyu of conspiracy and acceleration of death under the Criminal Code Law of Ogun State. However, the law firm disclosed that the Attorney-General's decision was based on findings from an extensive police investigation and medical evidence which established that the deceased died from natural causes. An autopsy reportedly conducted on August 21, 2024, by the Chief Pathologist at the State General Hospital Mortuary, Ota, and supported by subsequent medical reports, concluded that Ms. Olayinka died on April 19, 2024, from severe malnutrition and respiratory failure resulting from pulmonary tuberculosis. The report, according to the solicitors, ruled out allegations that the deceased was poisoned or administered any harmful substance. The statement further noted that investigators found no credible evidence linking either Adeyinka or Ashimiyu to any act capable of causing or accelerating the death of the deceased. It added that there was also no factual basis for the allegation of conspiracy levelled against the defendants. According to the statement, Chief Adeyinka, a United Kingdom-based philanthropist and founder of a humanitarian foundation, never met the deceased personally. Her only connection to the matter was through financial and material assistance provided to the deceased's family by her foundation. The law firm also stated that Ashimiyu, the deceased's husband, had taken his late wife for medical treatment during her illness and had equally benefited from support provided by the foundation for rent, household bills and family upkeep. The police investigation reportedly traced the origin of the allegations to disagreements among individuals and organisations involved in the care of the deceased and her twin children rather than to any criminal conduct by the two defendants. Reacting to the development, Yakubu Eleto Chambers described the Attorney-General's decision as a "complete and unequivocal vindication" of its clients after more than two years of public scrutiny and damaging allegations. The firm called on members of the public, media organisations, bloggers and social media commentators to refrain from circulating what it described as false, misleading or defamatory claims concerning the two individuals. While expressing appreciation to those who upheld the principles of due process and fairness throughout the case, the solicitors stated that their clients reserve the right to seek legal redress against any person or organisation responsible for defamatory publications arising from the matter. The law firm maintained that the outcome represented not merely a decision not to prosecute but a complete affirmation of the innocence of both Chief Adeyinka and Mr. Ashimiyu.

Court Adjourns Hammed Tajudeen’s Case to June 30 Over Ill Health The Lagos State Magistrate Court sitting in Ogba has adjourned the case involving Alhaji Hammed Tajudeen Akanbi to June 30, 2026, following reports of the defendant's deteriorating health condition. The case, presided over by Magistrate L. A. Owolabi, came up on Monday for the hearing of the defendant’s bail application. At the proceedings, counsel from the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), A. Munir, informed the court that the DPP had issued legal advice on the matter. However, counsel to the defendant, Adedotun Ajulo, said he was unaware of the said legal advice. He also informed the court that the defendant was absent because he was receiving medical treatment at the Police Medical Clinic, Area F, Ikeja, where he was being held under medical care due to ill health. In a dramatic turn of events, the police prosecutor, A.O. Nwabuisi, confirmed that the defendant was indeed at the medical facility but expressed his intention to have him produced before the court despite his health challenges. Nwabuisi subsequently requested the court to stand the matter down to enable him bring the defendant to court. The request was strongly opposed by Ajulo, who argued that the defendant’s health should be accorded priority. Ajulo further submitted that justice must serve the interests of the state, the defendant and the public, stressing that the Rules of Professional Conduct for Lawyers prohibit prosecutors from engaging in conduct that could amount to persecution of an accused person. Following the prosecutor’s insistence, the court stood the matter down for one hour to allow efforts to produce the defendant. When proceedings resumed, the prosecutor was unable to present the defendant before the court. Instead, he tendered a medical report indicating that the defendant was critically ill and under medical observation. In his ruling, Magistrate Owolabi held that the medical report constituted sufficient evidence that the defendant was seriously ill and currently on admission. Consequently, the court adjourned the matter until June 30, 2026, for the defendant’s possible appearance, subject to his medical fitness. The court further directed that if the defendant remains medically unfit to attend proceedings on the adjourned date, the Chief Medical Officer of the Police Medical Clinic, Ikeja, or another designated officer from the facility, must appear before the court to provide an update on his health status.

Democracy Day: Toyin Amuzu Celebrates Nigerians with Fuel Support for 600 Transport Operators, Urges FG to Prioritise Security and Citizens’ Welfare By Solanke Ayomideji Taiwo As Nigerians commemorated the 2026 Democracy Day celebration, prominent public affairs advocate and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate for Abeokuta South Federal Constituency, Chief Toyin Amuzu, popularly known as TA, combined words with action by distributing free fuel support to 600 commercial transport operators while calling on the Federal Government to place greater emphasis on security and citizens’ welfare. The two-day intervention programme, held on Wednesday and Friday in Abeokuta, benefited 200 commercial taxi drivers with fuel worth ₦10,000 each and 400 commercial motorcycle riders with fuel worth ₦5,000 each. The initiative was aimed at easing the burden of rising fuel costs and providing relief to transport operators grappling with the nation's economic challenges. Speaking during the exercise, Amuzu said the gesture was his way of identifying with the people during difficult times and honouring the sacrifices of late Chief MKO Abiola and other heroes who fought for the democracy Nigerians enjoy today. According to him, June 12 should be more than a day of remembrance; it should serve as a period for leaders to demonstrate genuine commitment to the welfare and well-being of the people. "June 12 should not only be a day of remembrance but also a period for leaders to demonstrate commitment to the welfare and well-being of the people. This is my own little effort, which I have continued to make over time, even without holding any political position," he said. Amuzu noted that democracy is meaningful only when it translates into improved living conditions for ordinary citizens. "As we celebrate June 12, we must remember the sacrifices of Chief MKO Abiola and other democracy martyrs who laid down their lives for the democracy we enjoy today. The essence of democracy is the welfare of the people. It is about improving lives and giving hope to the ordinary citizen." He lamented the worsening economic conditions across the country, pointing out that many families, small business owners, and transport operators are struggling under the weight of rising living costs and declining economic opportunities. "I won't allow my people to die in penury. No one can honestly say things are easy. Families are finding it difficult to put food on the table, transport operators are battling high fuel costs, and small businesses are struggling to stay afloat. While we continue to demand better governance, we must also support one another and provide relief where possible." The PDP chieftain described the fuel distribution programme as a modest social support initiative designed to help beneficiaries increase their earnings and sustain their businesses. "This support may appear small, but it can make a significant difference. When a driver or rider uses this fuel, it means more trips, more customers, and more income. Ultimately, it translates into improved welfare for their families." Amuzu disclosed that the exercise represents the 16th intervention programme he has personally sponsored over the years to cushion the effects of economic hardship and improve the living conditions of residents of Abeokuta South and beyond. Beyond the fuel support initiative, Amuzu used the occasion of Democracy Day to congratulate Nigerians and reflect on the nation's democratic journey. In a statement made available to journalists, he described the annual celebration as a reminder of Nigeria's resilience and collective aspirations for a better future. He noted that despite numerous challenges, Nigerians have continued to demonstrate remarkable courage, patience, and commitment to democratic ideals. According to him, Democracy Day offers leaders at all levels an opportunity to reflect on their responsibilities and renew their commitment to good governance, accountability, and effective service delivery. "Today, we celebrate not only our democratic achievements but also the sacrifices of countless patriots who fought for the freedoms and rights we enjoy as a nation. Democracy thrives when the welfare and security of the people remain the primary focus of government." Expressing concern over the prevailing security challenges across different parts of the country, Amuzu stressed that insecurity remains a major obstacle to national development, economic growth, and social stability. He called on the Federal Government to intensify efforts toward addressing insecurity through improved intelligence gathering, enhanced support for security agencies, and proactive measures capable of guaranteeing the safety of lives and property. The public affairs advocate also urged government at all levels to implement policies and programmes that directly improve the living conditions of Nigerians, particularly in the areas of employment generation, healthcare, education, and economic empowerment. "The welfare of citizens must remain at the centre of governance. Nigerians deserve access to quality education, affordable healthcare, gainful employment opportunities, and an enabling environment for businesses to thrive. These are essential ingredients for a prosperous and stable nation." While acknowledging the efforts being made to tackle some national challenges, Amuzu appealed to political leaders, public office holders, and other stakeholders to work together in the interest of national unity and development. He also urged Nigerians to remain law-abiding, patriotic, and supportive of initiatives aimed at strengthening democratic institutions and promoting peaceful coexistence. Beneficiaries of the fuel support programme expressed appreciation for the gesture, describing it as timely and thoughtful given the current economic realities. Several taxi drivers and motorcycle riders said the intervention would help reduce operational costs and improve their daily earnings. Community leaders and residents who witnessed the programme commended Amuzu for consistently supporting grassroots development through practical interventions. They noted that his humanitarian efforts, including the drilling of over 20 boreholes in various communities, food assistance programmes, educational support, healthcare interventions, youth empowerment schemes, and other social welfare projects, have positively impacted many lives across Abeokuta South. As Nigeria marks another Democracy Day anniversary, beneficiaries including Musbau Adisa, Sunday Adejare, and Wale Akingbade described Amuzu's gesture as a reflection of the true spirit of June 12—sacrifice, service to humanity, and a commitment to ensuring that the dividends of democracy reach ordinary citizens. Amuzu concluded by expressing optimism that Nigeria would overcome its challenges and emerge stronger, provided leaders remain committed to addressing the needs and aspirations of the people through responsible leadership, unity, and collective action. #amebonewshub

Democracy Day: Sen. Akanbi Calls for Urgent Action on Insecurity, Economic Recovery and Voter Participation Senator Rilwan Adesoji Akanbi (Okanlomo of Ibadanland) has congratulated Nigerians, particularly the good people of Oyo State, on the occasion of Democracy Day, urging citizens to remain committed to the ideals of democracy, good governance, and active civic participation. In a statement issued to commemorate the anniversary, Senator Akanbi described Democracy Day as an opportunity to reflect on the sacrifices made by patriots who fought for democratic governance and the responsibility of citizens to protect and strengthen the nation's democratic institutions. While congratulating Nigerians on the milestone, the Okanlomo of Ibadanland expressed deep concern over the prevailing economic challenges confronting the country. He noted that rising inflation, declining purchasing power, unemployment, the soaring cost of food items, and the general increase in the cost of living have placed enormous pressure on households and businesses. According to him, governance must be people-oriented, with policies designed to improve the welfare and economic wellbeing of the masses rather than worsen their hardship. Senator Akanbi, however, emphasized that insecurity remains one of the greatest threats facing the nation today. He lamented the increasing cases of kidnapping, banditry, terrorism, armed robbery, and violent attacks on communities across the country, noting that many Nigerians now live in fear while farmers are unable to access their farmlands, thereby worsening food insecurity and contributing to inflation. According to him, no nation can experience meaningful economic growth or attract investments when lives and property are not adequately protected. He stressed that the security of citizens must remain the foremost responsibility of government, calling for a comprehensive review of existing security strategies. Senator Akanbi also expressed deep concern over the continued abduction of schoolchildren and teachers, particularly the case involving the 42 pupils and teachers abducted in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State. He called on security agencies to intensify efforts toward securing their immediate and safe release. The Okanlomo of Ibadanland further appealed to the abductors to heed the voice of reason and humanity, praying that Almighty God would touch their hearts and grant them the compassion to release the innocent victims unharmed so they can be reunited with their families. He noted that the future of any society is tied to the education of its children and that schools must never become targets of criminal activities. To address the broader security challenges, Senator Akanbi advocated for the strengthening of community policing and intelligence gathering at the grassroots level. He argued that local communities possess valuable information that can assist security agencies in identifying criminal elements before they strike. He maintained that involving traditional institutions, community leaders, local vigilante groups, and residents in security architecture would significantly improve the fight against crime and criminality. The former lawmaker also underscored the importance of voter registration and the collection of Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs), describing them as essential components of democratic participation. He urged all eligible Nigerians, especially young people, to register as voters and ensure they collect their PVCs ahead of future elections. According to Senator Akanbi, voter registration and PVC collection are paramount because they represent the people's power to influence governance and determine the direction of the country. He noted that citizens who fail to participate in the electoral process inadvertently surrender their voices and their future to others. The Okanlomo of Ibadanland further urged political actors and citizens to uphold the sanctity of the electoral process. He strongly condemned vote buying and vote selling, describing them as major obstacles to good governance and democratic development. He warned that exchanging votes for temporary financial benefits often results in years of poor leadership, neglect, and underdevelopment. He called on voters to carefully assess candidates based on competence, integrity, character, performance, and commitment to public service rather than ethnic, religious, or monetary considerations. "Democracy can only thrive when citizens actively participate in the process. Registering to vote, collecting your PVC, rejecting vote buying, and making informed choices are fundamental responsibilities of every citizen. The ballot remains the most powerful tool available to the people for correcting what is wrong and charting a better course for future generations," he stated. Senator Akanbi concluded by calling for unity, patriotism, and renewed commitment to nation-building. He expressed optimism that Nigeria can overcome its present challenges through responsible leadership, active citizenship, economic reforms, and a robust security framework that prioritizes the protection of lives and property. He wished all Nigerians a peaceful and memorable Democracy Day celebration and prayed for lasting peace, security, prosperity, and progress in Oyo State and Nigeria as a whole.
