Succession Crisis Brews in Kobape as Community Demands People's Choice for Olu Stool By Solanke Ayomideji Taiwo Tension has continued to mount in Kobape, a prominent community in Obafemi-Owode Local Government Area of Ogun State, following allegations that efforts are underway to impose a candidate from the Taylor family, Chief Tolu Lambert Oyesiku Taylor as the next Olu of Kobape despite growing opposition from residents and traditional stakeholders. The controversy stems from reports that a member of the Taylor family is being considered for the vacant stool of the Olu of Kobape, a development many residents argue violates the community's tradition and the wishes of the people. Hundreds of indigenes and residents of Kobape on Wednesday staged a peaceful protest to the palace of the Alake and Paramount Ruler of Egbaland, His Royal Majesty, Oba Adedotun Aremu Gbadebo, to express their support for Aremu Olusegun Majekodunmi as the preferred candidate to occupy the revered throne. The protesters maintained that the late Olu of Kobape, Oba Olufemi Allen Taylor, emerged from the Taylor family and that selecting another candidate from the same lineage would be unacceptable to the people. They insisted that the community should be allowed to choose a monarch who enjoys broad-based support and possesses deep roots in the history and development of Kobape not a foreigner who has no family house and can't mention the name of a family in the town cannot ascend the throne of Olu of Kobape. Kobape falls under the jurisdiction of the Oba Traditional Council, where former Ogun State Governor, Aremo Olusegun Osoba serves as the Oluwo of Oba and is regarded as one of the influential kingmakers within communities under Obafemi-Owode Local Government. Speaking during the protest, legal counsel to the Kobape community, Kehinde Amusa, said he joined community elders and stakeholders in the peaceful demonstration to seek royal approval for Majekodunmi's emergence as the next Olu of Kobape. According to him, the community remains united in its position that the choice of the people should prevail in the selection process. The stool of the Olu of Kobape has remained vacant since the passing of Oba Olufemi Allen Taylor in December 2021. Adding his voice, the Adele of Kobape, Alhaji Olafimiwan, rejected what he described as attempts to impose an outsider on the community. "I do not know whoever the Oba Traditional Council wants to impose on us, but such a person is not a son of Kobape. A foreigner cannot ascend the throne of Olu of Kobape," he declared. He also warned against what he termed "moneybag politics" in the selection process, stressing that only a credible and widely accepted candidate could guarantee peace, unity and sustainable development in the community. Olafimiwan further noted that Kobape comprises five Baales, all of whom were under the authority of the late Olu, and urged the Ogun State Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs to intervene to ensure that the wishes of the people are respected. Similarly, the Iyalode of Kobape, Chief Mrs. Dorcas Kushimo, disclosed that community leaders had unanimously endorsed Aremu Olusegun Majekodunmi as the preferred candidate for the throne. She appealed to the Alake of Egbaland to support what she described as the collective decision of the people. Also speaking, the Chief Imam of Kobape, Imam Dairo Ibrahim, praised Majekodunmi's contributions to the growth and development of the community, describing him as the most qualified candidate for the royal stool. According to him, Majekodunmi's emergence would usher in a new era of prosperity and progress for the kingdom. In the same vein, Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Kobape Zone, Pastor Gbenga Abiola, described Majekodunmi as a peacemaker and a visionary leader whose record of service and community development made him worthy of the throne. He urged traditional authorities to listen to the voice of the people and endorse the candidate they have overwhelmingly chosen. Responding to the protesters, the Alake of Egbaland, Oba Adedotun Aremu Gbadebo, commended the people of Kobape for conducting themselves peacefully throughout the demonstration. The monarch acknowledged their concerns and encouraged them to formally present the same position before the Oba Traditional Council for consideration and approval. He advised the delegation to continue pursuing lawful and peaceful channels in advocating for their preferred candidate, Aremu Olusegun Majekodunmi, while assuring them that their message had been received. The unfolding succession dispute has drawn significant attention across Obafemi-Owode Local Government Area, with observers closely watching the next steps of the traditional council and relevant government authorities in resolving the impasse and determining who ultimately ascends the throne of the Olu of Kobape.

The New Nigeria People's Party wishes to alert Nigerians to the persistent danger to the 2027 general elections being deliberately orchestrated by Prof. Joash AMUPITAN, the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission. The internal dispute within the NNPP had long been resolved by various court judgements in Abia High Court, FCT High Court, Apo Division, as well as a Court of Appeal, Owerri Division judgement delivered in favor of the Agbo Major led leadership. It is alarming that INEC which is supposedly expected to be an unbiased commission had disturbingly taken sides, constantly refusing to obey valid court judgements delivered by justices of competent courts of jurisdiction, particularly the judgement delivered by Justice Kawu in Suit No. CV/4800/25/2005 wherein all issues and prayers before the court were resolved in favor of the Agbo Major led leadership. In a recent meeting convened by the INEC Chairman on May 15th, 2026, in respect to the disobedience of the judgements, Prof. AMUPITAN had boasted openly at the meeting that he was not duty bound to obey court judgements obtained by the Agbo Major led leadership against parties who are now members of known opposition political parties. This lawless position is not only worrisome but a travesty against all norms of impartiality an umpire of his standing has sworn under the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to uphold. The NNPP view Prof. Amupitan's insistence on disobeying court judgements, including an order of mandamus given by Justice Kawu of the FCT High Court to compel the commission to recognize the Agbo Major led leadership as anarchistic, lawless and an invitation to political instability. The recent recourse to initiate a contempt proceeding against the Chairman of the commission remains the ONLY lawful step to ensuring that the chief electoral umpire in Nigeria does not exercise powers above the courts and lawful judgements obtained from courts of competent jurisdiction. That Prof. Amupitan's insistence on disobeying court judgements is now visible; albeit against good reasoning is no doubt a deliberate precipitation designed to derail the electoral timetable, cause dissaffection, political instability and loss of almost a trillion Naira budgetary allocation earmarked for the 2027 polls. No matter the delay and denial, Prof. Amupitan's actions will not escape justice. NNPP will not abandon this path of justice until Prof. Amupitan obeys the lawful judgements of the courts. The attention of the Attorney General of the Federation, as the Chief Law Officer is hereby drawn to this avoidable circumstances with its perilous consequences, and it's our hope that he engage the Chief Judge of the Federation as the head of judiciary in Nigeria to defend and protect his jurisdiction jealously Prof. Amupitan is not above the law and he is duty bound to obey the judgments of the Court, this path, NNPP will continue to pursue to end impunity, bias and or selective justice of any kind in our political system. Comrade Oginni Olaposi Sunday Secretary General NNPP Hqtrs Abuja.

OGUN EAST LEADERS RALLY BEHIND TINUBU, YAYI, ABIODUN AT MASSIVE PRAYER ASSEMBLY, DISTRIBUTE OVER ₦30m IN PALLIATIVES AGO-IWOYE — Political, religious and community leaders from the Ijebu North, Ijebu East and Ogun Waterside Federal Constituency on Sunday converged on Ago-Iwoye, Ogun State, for a large-scale Victory Prayer Assembly aimed at seeking divine support for the political aspirations of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola, popularly known as YAYI, and Governor Dapo Abiodun ahead of the 2027 general elections. The gathering, convened by Prince Fatai Adesegun, drew an estimated crowd of more than 3,000 constituents and stakeholders from across the three local government areas, transforming the event into a blend of spiritual intercession, political mobilization and community empowerment. The assembly featured interdenominational prayer sessions where clerics from both the Christian and Muslim communities offered prayers for peace, progress and stability in Ogun State and Nigeria, while also seeking divine guidance and success for the endorsed political leaders. In a major empowerment initiative held alongside the event, beneficiaries received relief materials and financial support valued at over ₦30 million. The distribution included 350 bags of rice, 300 cartons of noodles and cash donations to individuals and groups across the constituency. The intervention, according to organizers, was designed to provide support for residents and reinforce grassroots engagement within the constituency. Addressing participants, Prince Adesegun described the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as a reform-driven government committed to repositioning Nigeria for sustainable development and economic prosperity. He argued that continuity in leadership would enable the administration to deepen ongoing reforms and deliver greater benefits to citizens. According to him, “The current administration has initiated critical reforms aimed at placing Nigeria on the path of sustainable prosperity. Continuity is important to ensure that these gains are consolidated for the benefit of Nigerians.” Speaking on the political future of Ogun State, Adesegun urged constituents to support Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola in the race for the governorship of the state, describing him as a capable leader with a proven record of public service and grassroots engagement. He said Senator Adeola's legislative accomplishments and connection with ordinary people positioned him as a suitable candidate to steer the affairs of Ogun State. The event attracted a broad spectrum of stakeholders, including members of the League of Imams and Alfas from the three local government areas, representatives of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), executives of the All Progressives Congress (APC) from all 32 wards within the constituency, serving councillors, members of the Governance Advisory Council (GAC), and other political leaders and community representatives. Participants used the occasion to offer prayers for national unity, peaceful elections and continued development across Ogun State and the country. Observers at the gathering noted that beyond its spiritual significance, the assembly also reflected early political realignments and consultations as stakeholders begin to position themselves ahead of the 2027 electoral cycle.

BREAKING: Court Dismisses $19.6 Million Claim Against NNPCL — Rules Contract Scope Cannot Be Changed Orally In a landmark ruling Friday, May 22, 2026, the Federal Capital Territory High Court in Abuja threw out a $19.6 million lawsuit filed by Alternate Dimensions Ventures Ltd against the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), affirming a key legal principle: a written contract cannot be expanded through oral agreements or conduct. Alternate Dimensions had sought $19,600,000 in professional fees, claiming the scope of its Direct Sale, Direct Purchase (DSDP e-pro) contract with NNPCL was orally expanded. Represented by counsel Patrick Peter, the firm argued it was entitled to the revised sum for services rendered under the alleged new terms. But NNPCL, through its lawyer Ituah Imhanze of KENNA LP, pushed back sharply, arguing that parties are bound exclusively by the clear terms of their written agreement. Imhanze contended that without any written amendment, the claim was legally unsound, and the court agreed. Delivering judgment, Justice Hamza Mu’azu upheld NNPCL’s defense, stating that the contract was unambiguous and that no evidence was adduced during the trial, which supported the alleged scope expansion. The court further found that NNPCL fully complied with all contractual terms and committed no breach. Dismissing the suit as meritless, Justice Mu’azu reinforced the doctrine of sanctity of contract: any amendment to a written agreement must be express, unequivocal, and documented, not implied or verbal. The ruling spares NNPCL from the S19.6 million claim and also a floodgate of similar potential liabilities.

Court Appeal Stalls Iro Kingship Dispute as Chiefs Defend Oba Aromaye's Legitimacy .......As Olori Ebi Oleyo ruling house, Chief Oladapo Akanbi ask Alake of Egbaland Oba Aremu Gbadebo to back out from Iro Kingdom Crises By Solanke Ayomideji Taiwo A fresh dimension has emerged in the lingering controversy surrounding the stool of the Oba of Iro Kingdom in Obafemi-Owode Local Government Area of Ogun State, as prominent traditional figures and stakeholders in the kingdom have publicly thrown their weight behind the incumbent monarch, Oba Najeemdeen Aromaye, insisting that he remains the legitimate ruler pending the determination of legal proceedings. Speaking during an address on the matter, Chief Oladapo Akanbi Olusegun, 70, the Olori Ebi of Oleyo Ruling House in Iro Kingdom, described the ongoing dispute over the traditional stool as a matter that should not generate panic among residents, noting that legal battles over royal succession are not uncommon in traditional institutions. According to him, the current disagreement over the throne should be allowed to follow due judicial process, as the matter has already advanced to the Court of Appeal. Chief Olusegun, however, appealed to the Paramount Ruler of Egbaland, Oba Dr. Adedotun Aremu Gbadebo, Okukenu IV, to refrain from actions or associations capable of being interpreted as support for individuals seeking to remove the incumbent monarch from the throne. He alleged that certain forces regarded as opponents of Iro Kingdom's current traditional leadership structure were making efforts to challenge the authority of Oba Aromaye and urged caution to avoid actions that could escalate tension within the community. The traditional leader also called on Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, CON, to intervene in the matter by directing the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Honourable Hamzat, to thoroughly investigate the issues surrounding the controversy and question why Oba Aremu Gbadebo is supporting another person from Apetumata ruling house, while Oleyo ruling house is the legitimate ruling house according to declaration since 1965. He said such intervention would help establish the facts and ensure that anyone found culpable in actions capable of destabilising the peace of the kingdom is held accountable. Chief Olusegun further appealed to sons and daughters of Iro Kingdom to remain peaceful and avoid any action capable of causing unrest, he said "The matter is already before the Court of Appeal and due process should be allowed to take its course. Oba Najeemdeen Aromaye remains the legitimate Oba of Iro Kingdom and there is no cause for alarm, the only person who pulled out from the Oleyo ruling house, Adeleke Oniyide who is late, the second person who seconded him in the case was not a member of Oleyo ruling house with undated letter." he stated. In a similar submission, Chief Prince Adewale Oniyide, a member of the traditional council of Iro Kingdom, expressed concerns over what he described as contradictory developments surrounding the throne dispute. According to him, Oba Adedotun Aremu Gbadebo, the Alake of Egbaland, had earlier approved Oba Najeemdeen Aromaye as the legitimate candidate to ascend the throne of Iro Kingdom. Chief Oniyide said he was therefore surprised by what he termed an apparent shift in position regarding moves to challenge the monarch's authority. He questioned why efforts would be made to consider another ruling house for succession while the incumbent king, who was duly installed, remains alive and on the throne. He further argued that Oba Aromaye had been installed approximately 13 years ago in 2014 through the Ministry of Chieftaincy Affairs after due processes had been followed, stressing that the monarch was recognised as the rightful occupant of the royal seat, noting that if it was an Hausa or Ibo was presented by Oleyo ruling house he should be accepted since it was who the Oleyo ruling house presented, he appealed to Governor Prince Dapo Abiodun CON to approach Oba Aremu Gbadebo to desist from causing any havoc in Iro Kingdom. "Oba Najeemdeen Aromaye was installed by the Ministry of Chieftaincy Affairs as the legitimate person worthy of the throne. Why should another ruling house now be asked to take over while the incumbent monarch is still alive? These are questions that deserve clear and honest answers," he said. The development is expected to continue attracting attention from stakeholders across Ogun State as residents await the outcome of legal proceedings and possible intervention from relevant authorities. Meanwhile, community leaders continue to urge calm among residents, insisting that peace and unity should prevail while the judicial process runs its course. #amebonewshub

Group rejects Ondo AG Ajulo's comment on outcome of APC primaries in Ondo State Concerned All Progressives Congress (APC) Stakeholders and Ondo State indigenes have rejected the defence of the party's primaries by the state Attorney General of the state and Commissioner for Justice, Olukayode Ajulo, describing his recent statement as an attempt to “rewrite events that played out in broad daylight across Ondo State.” In a statement signed by Mogbojuri Ksayode on Thursday, the group accused the Attorney General of denying alleged violence and irregularities that marred the APC primaries in the state. The stakeholders were reacting to a statement issued by Ajulo on May 21, 2026, where he reportedly dismissed allegations of violence and manipulation during the exercise. According to the group, Ajulo’s claim that there was “no violence” during the primaries was false and insulting to the people of Ondo State. The statement alleged that armed non-state actors disrupted the primaries in several locations across the state, including Okelisa in Akure, where it claimed the senator representing Ondo Central narrowly escaped an assassination attempt. The stakeholders further alleged that party leaders and aspirants were chased away, assaulted and prevented from participating in the exercise in some wards. “For the Chief Law Officer of Ondo State to stand before the press and deny this is not statesmanship. It is complicity through silence,” the statement read. The group also accused Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa of violating provisions of the Electoral Act 2026 by allegedly imposing candidates instead of conducting valid direct primaries or achieving genuine consensus. Citing Sections 84(2), 84(9), 84(10) and 84(13) of the Electoral Act 2026, the stakeholders argued that consensus candidates can only emerge when all cleared aspirants willingly withdraw through written consent, adding that no such process took place in Ondo State. “What happened in Ondo was not consensus. There was no meeting, no unanimous written consent, and no special convention or congress to ratify the so-called consensus candidate. It was imposition,” the statement added. The group further accused Ajulo of selective constitutionalism, alleging that he failed to speak out during previous incidents of violence involving APC members in the state. They also questioned the Attorney General’s political history within the APC, claiming he was not part of the party’s struggle in Ondo State during the 2022 and 2023 election cycles. The stakeholders maintained that Governor Aiyedatiwa’s electoral victory does not give him the right to undermine internal party democracy. “The APC in Ondo State was built on consensus, consultation, and respect for party members. What we saw was the opposite: imposition, violence, and exclusion,” the statement noted. The group called on the National Working Committee of the APC to conduct an independent review of the primaries, while also urging security agencies to investigate alleged violence in Okelisa, Akure and other affected areas. They further urged the governor and the Attorney General to respect the Electoral Act 2026 and stop what they described as intimidation of party members. “The era of weaponizing the office of the Attorney General to silence dissent and cover up illegality must end. Ondo State is bigger than any one man’s ambition,” the statement concluded.

Rainbow Coalition Ambassadors Hails Rivers APC Over Peaceful Conduct of Guber Primaries Charges Chinda to Be Magnanimous in Victory as a Patriot The Rainbow Coalition Ambassadors (RCA) has commended the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State for the peaceful and orderly conduct of its governorship primaries, describing the process as a shining example of political maturity and a departure from the state’s history of acrimonious contests. In a statement signed by Comrade Jude Chuks and issued shortly after the declaration of Rt. Hon. Kingsley Ogundu Chinda as the party’s candidate for the 2027 governorship election, the group praised the APC leadership and stakeholders for ensuring a rancour-free exercise. The Rainbow Coalition Ambassadors, a prominent support structure aligned with the broader Rainbow Coalition political movement in the state, noted that the smooth conduct of the primaries reflects growing commitment to unity, dialogue, and collective progress ahead of the 2027 polls. “We congratulate the Rivers State APC for conducting a credible, transparent, and peaceful primary. This achievement underscores the maturing democratic culture in our state and sets a positive tone for the political season,” Chuks read. The group specifically hailed the withdrawals of key aspirants, including Governor Siminalayi Fubara and Tonye Cole, which paved the way for Chinda’s emergence, describing the moves as “statesmanlike decisions taken in the supreme interest of peace and party cohesion. While celebrating the outcome, the Rainbow Coalition Ambassadors charged the new flag bearer to remain magnanimous in victory and demonstrate the spirit of a true patriot. “Victory at the primary is not an end in itself but a call to higher responsibility. We urge Hon. Kingsley Chinda to extend a hand of fellowship to all other aspirants, stakeholders, and even those outside the APC. "True leadership demands inclusivity, humility, and the ability to heal divides rather than widen them,” the ambassadors emphasised. They further appealed to Chinda to prioritise broad-based consultations, youth and women inclusion, and the welfare of Rivers people in his campaign and future governance plans, noting his legislative experience and cross-party relationships as key assets. The group, however, expressed optimism that, knowing Chinda’s antecedents as a seasoned lawmaker, bridge-builder, and consistent advocate for good governance, he will unify the party, foster inclusive development, and deliver people-oriented leadership that prioritises the welfare of all Rivers people across party lines. |
ETI-OSA POLITICAL STORM: Stakeholders Reject Alleged Imposition, Say “No to Fifth Term Petition alleges intimidation, cyber harassment, voter suppression, and attempts to influence party primary process in Eti-Osa Constituency II A major political controversy is unfolding within Eti-Osa Constituency II of Lagos State following a petition by concerned party stakeholders alleging intimidation, coercion, cyber harassment, and attempts to undermine internal party democracy ahead of the forthcoming Lagos State House of Assembly primary election. The petition, submitted by individuals identifying themselves as concerned stakeholders within the constituency, raises serious concerns over what they describe as coordinated efforts to influence the outcome of the party’s primary election and impose a preferred candidate on party members. At the center of the controversy is the reported push for the return of incumbent lawmaker Hon. Olusegun Yishawu for what would represent a fifth consecutive term in the Lagos State House of Assembly — an uninterrupted tenure that would amount to approximately twenty years of representation within the same constituency. The development has sparked growing resistance among some stakeholders who insist that the constituency should not be subjected to what they describe as political monopolization. “Our message is simple and clear: No to a fifth term,” the stakeholders declared in the petition. According to them, the principle of democratic participation and inclusiveness demands periodic leadership renewal and broader opportunities for representation. They argue that continued concentration of political representation in the hands of a single individual over two decades could potentially weaken political development and contradict the ideals of fairness and internal democracy. The petition also makes allegations against former Minister of Finance Hon. Wale Edun, claiming that he has been exerting influence and pressure on aspirants and political stakeholders in support of Hon. Yishawu's bid. The stakeholders alleged that aspirants have faced pressure to step aside and support a preferred candidate. In addition, they claimed that substantial financial inducements — allegedly amounting to hundreds of millions of naira — have been offered to persuade contestants to withdraw from the race. The petition further alleges that some aspirants who reportedly refused to sign what were described as “voluntary withdrawal agreements” are now facing various forms of intimidation and political pressure. Among the allegations raised are claims of cyber bullying, cyber stalking, harassment, threats, and voter suppression tactics allegedly intended to weaken opposition within the party. The stakeholders argued that such developments could create perceptions of unfairness and raise concerns regarding equity and internal democratic processes within the party. Political observers note that internal party contests often play a critical role in determining broader electoral stability, particularly in highly strategic constituencies such as Eti-Osa. Analysts warn that unresolved grievances surrounding candidate selection processes can generate divisions capable of affecting party cohesion and public perception. The petitioners expressed concern that if the allegations remain unaddressed, the situation could negatively impact confidence in the integrity of the primary election process and potentially create avoidable tensions within the constituency. They subsequently called on the party's National Working Committee and Lagos State leadership to immediately investigate the allegations and ensure transparency in the primary process. Specifically, they requested a comprehensive investigation into claims of intimidation, coercion, voter suppression, cyber bullying, and political harassment. They also urged party leaders to provide a level playing field for all aspirants, prevent candidate imposition, protect contestants and supporters from intimidation, and uphold principles of fairness, justice, and equal opportunity. Despite the concerns raised, the stakeholders reaffirmed their loyalty and commitment to the party and expressed confidence that the leadership would act to preserve peace and democratic credibility within Eti-Osa Constituency II. As political activities intensify ahead of the primaries, attention now shifts to party authorities and how they will respond to the growing concerns emerging from one of Lagos State's closely watched constituencies. At the time of publication, the individuals named in the petition had not publicly responded to the allegations. |
APPRECIATING NEDC'S INTERVENTION IN NORTH EAST EDUCATIONAL STRUGGLE By Audu Moses For several years, schools in the North Eastern part of Nigeria, and indeed it's entire educational system were in ruins and rots. They were visibly and intentionally targeted. Schools were burned, teachers and learners were killed, while thousands more were displaced or abducted, with entire communities left with an equal generation of children, whose only history and places of abode are IDP camps and displacement homes. It has been over 15 years of traumatic and horrific stories. This reality confronted the entire country and even the international community. The insurgents did not only attack schools, the inflicted violence on the psyche, attempting to destroy it's fundamental ideals, and fabrics through demoralizing and radicalizing the system. Education is not just about grades and certificates, it's about survival, and a generation. It is within this context that the North East Development Commission's educational program of rebuilding and sustainability, across Borno, Yobe, Adamawa, Gombe, Taraba, and Bauchi States, deserve not just mere bureaucratic acknowledgement but public appreciation. Since June 2016 through 2018, the story has been terrible and horrific; schools were reduced to rubbles, textbooks were burned, teachers and learners killed or displaced. For the NEDC, the approach is not about press releases but the prioritization of actual reconstruction of classrooms, laboratories, libraries, conveniences, and protective perimeter fences. This is because, they understand that there can be no school without a roof, because no child learns under the tree, especially during the rains, or when the sun bites. Truth is, a roof and a blackboard may not guarantee learning but the sure make it possible. Those structures are clear testaments that something foundational and normal is already taking place, and that the initial barriers has been eliminated , and the people were never abandoned by their government. For the people of the North East, the greatest challenge remains the "lost cohort", those children who were within the 12 years to 17years bracket, who suffered the real pangs of insurgency, and had missed school for between 4years to 6years. To this group, the thought of jumping classes, or just being promoted notionally to the Junior Secondary School class will not just be counterproductive but stigmatizing. Hence, the innovative accelerated learning centres and integration program for IDPs and almajiri students. Although critics will conclude that the plan is not a perfect one, but it remains the most pragmatic approach, as it gives the out-of-school children a second chance, with the possibility of not just eliminating the situation created by grown-ups sitting in the same class with children young enough to be their children, but granting the perfect ambience for formal education, an an alternative for vocational training, as it stops the cycle of permanent exclusion of thousands. The focus on local capacity building remains cardinal approach that functions side-by-side with infrastructural development, as infrastructure without teachers will only be a shell or a museum. Notably, fixing the teachers through retraining, is like fixing the pipeline which results in fixing the future. While, the incentives for educators to study educational courses abroad, with a return-to-serve condition, solves a job security challenge for the teachers who will now return back home to a sure ready job. Through this local teaching workforce, sustainability is entrenched by a group of teachers who understand the context of the environment and are not afraid to remain, ensuring and consolidating the development of an enduring system who have a stake in the state. This is a trite fact that, interventions in the educational sector are slow, expensive, and at times vulnerable to the setbacks against the sidelines of insecurity and conflict. But by making education the core pillar of NEDC sustainability program, in its collaborative fight against insecurity and insurgency, NEDC has demonstrated it's avowed commitment in ridding the region from child recruitment for instability by insurgents, at the same time stabilizing the region. NEDC indeed has demonstrated that it is an agent of confidence and trust building as it continues to train and produce more graduates, thereby growing the human capital base that is necessary for the future sustainability of the region. It stands to the NEDC that it has remained focused over the years on a sector that does not necessarily create or attract headlines. However, the superlative works of the NEDC has to be amplified and applauded by well-meaning patriots, as this will certainly reenforce it's focus and priority. Indeed, NEDC has changed the narratives in the North East from destruction to rebuilding, and from displacement to reequiping and retraining. They have also restored the dignity of thousands of communities who were told that the government has abandoned and forgotten them because they do not matter. NEDC has eliminated the supply chain of insurgents recruitment into violent groups, giving youths better positive alternative, while building huge human capital base needed by the region as it progressively recover from the years of destruction due to insurgency and conflicts. A functioning school in town that was once a ghost town is good for all, no matter the political party, religion, or race. This is not flattery, it is a push to keep moving on, because the next generation needs education and the North East needs a chance to redefine itself beyond conflicts and insurgency. Soon the narratives will no longer be "out-of-school children" but will become "what these graduates have achieved and produced." This conversation is worth having and the North East Development Commission (NEDC) is making it happen. This indeed is worth appreciating and supporting. Moses wrote this piece from Abuja. |
RIVERS 2027: HOW PROVEN LOYALTY IS SPEAKING FOR KINGSLEY CHIDA By Thomas Taribo There are two types of loyalty; true loyalty and strategic loyalty. True loyalty is rare, and unambitious. True loyalty is unsaleable, it stays when all else leaves, because it has no exit clause, and convenience, but strategic loyalty is common because it’s rational, and transactional. In politics, you need both to win. But when the fight gets real, only true loyalty stays. Howbeit , structurally, transactional loyalty leads to structural collapse. Evidentially , those who hold the structure of 2027, are those who did not scatter in 2023. However, loyalty is never one-sided, although it is not entrenched in keeping scores, it is designed to create reciprocal bonds. True loyalty, the type demonstrated by Rt. Hon. Kingsley Chida in Rivers State works quietly, protectively, and defensively, without exposing or taking the credit. Rt. Hon. Chida, understands from the onset that there are certain things that cannot be rushed without breaking them. That is why he can wait till eternity, removing the pressure that leads to the temptation of compromise, acknowledging also that any person who can wait till eternity does not need to lobby for tomorrow, for tomorrow naturally will come to him. A man of uncommon fidelity, Rt. Hon. Chida builds trust, and keeps to his words, never betraying anyone. His life of consistency gets him noticed, instead of lobbying, or negotiating, Rt. Hon. Chida choose silence, that type of silence that is strategic and unambitious. Neither does he switch when the wind changes its direction, waiting for, what will be, to be, without leverage. Little wonder then that the structure remembers him. Indeed, Rt. Hon. OK Chida, matters more than the loudest campaigner. While most politicians are screaming ahead of the 2027 election, heating up the polity, especially in Rivers States, with posters ablazing, forming camps, and running the race of relevance, one man stands out, chosing a different path, not chasing the microphones, nor cutting deals in the dark, but waiting, watching , and remaining truly loyal. An unambitious personality, Rt. Hon. OK Chida, never pushes his name into every conversation, or threatens to walk away when he does not get his way. In a state where loyalty is often transactional, Rt. Hon. Chida’s consistency stands out. His allegiance to the FCT Minister is not new, not seasonal, not convenient. It predates the current offices, the current titles, the current relevance. He has stayed when it was politically risky, and he has stayed when it became politically rewarding. This certainly is the difference between a fair-weather supporter and a proven ally. A man of unbroken reputation, Rt. Hon. Chida walks with an unblemish, and unrivaled currency in Rivers' State politics, "OK Chida has never betrayed anyone since he was born.” This currency becomes even more unequal considering the fact that historically, betrayal in the politics of Rivers State is the default story. Alliances shift with every cabinet reshuffle, turning yesterday’s foot soldiers into today’s critics. Around Chief Wike's camp, among old Port Harcourt political hands, and even within the oppositions and traducers, the overwhelming consensus of opinion is the same; Rt. Hon. Chida keeps his word, without any leak, or double-dealing. In a system built on distrust, this kind of reputation is leverage in itself. As we climax into Rivers 2027, the battle cannot be won by the loudest voice or the heaviest spender alone. It will be won by trust. Trust between leaders and their base. Trust between allies who have been tested. The FCT Minister’s political structure in Rivers is built on people who have proven they will not scatter at the first sign of pressure. In that structure, loyalty is currency, and Rt. Hon. OK Chida has paid in full, over years, without demanding interest. He may not be on every billboard. He may not be in every WhatsApp group making noise about 2027. But in the rooms where decisions are made, proven loyalty speaks louder than ambition. There is a lesson here for Rivers politics. Not everyone has to be in a hurry. Not everyone has to force their way into relevance. Sometimes, the most strategic move is to be known as the one person who refused to break rank. For Rt. Hon. Kingsley Chida, that reputation is already speaking. And in 2027, when the dust settles and the real structure matters more than the noise, that voice will be heard. Rivers has had enough of fair-weather politicians. What it needs now are men who stay when it is inconvenient, and Rt. Hon. OK Chida is one of them. Party Faithful Hail Unopposed Reps Candidate as Symbol of Grassroots Confidence The political atmosphere in Ojokoro and its surrounding communities was recently filled with excitement and admiration following the emergence of a respected political leader and frontline aspirant as the House of Representatives candidate of his party without opposition — a development widely described by supporters and stakeholders as a reward for dedication, consistency and people-oriented leadership. Among the voices celebrating the landmark achievement was Aduragbemi Olanrewaju Olaide, Supervisor for Works and Infrastructure, Ojokoro LCDA, who showered encomiums on the candidate, describing him as “a great leader and astute politician whose political sagacity remains truly inspiring and enviable.” In a congratulatory message made available to journalists, Olaide noted that the candidate’s emergence unopposed did not come as a surprise to many political observers and party faithful who have closely followed his political journey and commitment to grassroots development over the years. According to him, the consensus candidacy is a strong indication of the trust, confidence and acceptance the people have in the aspirant’s leadership qualities and capacity to effectively represent their interests at the national level. He further stated that the achievement reflects years of hard work, loyalty to party ideals and unwavering dedication to the welfare of the people. “This remarkable achievement speaks volumes about the confidence and trust your constituents have in your leadership and it is indeed highly commendable,” Olaide stated. Political analysts within the constituency have also described the unopposed emergence as a strategic victory capable of strengthening party unity ahead of the general elections, noting that such consensus often reflects political maturity, broad acceptability and effective grassroots mobilization. Residents and supporters across the constituency have continued to express optimism that the candidate’s emergence would usher in a new phase of purposeful representation, inclusive governance and accelerated development. Olaide, while praying for continued success for the candidate, wished him wisdom, sound health and divine guidance as he prepares for the enormous responsibility ahead. “As you continue on this progressive trajectory, I wish you outstanding success in all your endeavours. May Almighty God continually grant you greater wisdom, strength, sound health and divine guidance throughout your tenure of office and beyond,” he added. The congratulatory message has since attracted widespread reactions from political associates, community leaders and party supporters, many of whom described the development as a victory for democracy, loyalty and service-driven leadership. Observers believe that the candidate’s unchallenged emergence may further consolidate the party’s structure within the constituency and position it strongly for electoral success in the forthcoming polls. Congratulations have continued to pour in from different quarters as supporters celebrate what many have termed a well-deserved recognition of competence, experience and enduring grassroots connection.

Abia Youth Group Defends Benjamin Kalu, Dismisses Claims of Abandoned Constituency Project A youth-based advocacy organisation in Abia State has rejected allegations that a constituency project linked to Benjamin Kalu, Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, was abandoned, describing the claims as misleading and politically motivated. The group, Abia Progressive Youth Frontier (APYF), said recent reports questioning the implementation of a conference and e-learning facility attracted unnecessary controversy without proper understanding of the project’s status and execution process. In a statement issued on Sunday and signed by its state coordinator, Chinedu Nwafor, the organisation said attempts to portray the project as abandoned ignored the broader record of infrastructural and educational interventions facilitated by Kalu across Bende federal constituency. According to the group, the deputy speaker has remained one of the most visible and impactful federal lawmakers from Abia state, particularly in the areas of youth empowerment, education, infrastructure, healthcare support, and constituency development. The youth organisation said it was important for public commentary around constituency projects to be guided by fairness, verification, and an understanding of implementation timelines rather than assumptions capable of creating public distrust. “We consider it necessary to caution against the growing trend where incomplete project sites are hastily labelled abandoned projects without considering procurement processes, execution phases, and administrative adjustments that may occur during implementation,” the statement said. The group noted that Kalu’s interventions in Abia communities have remained visible and verifiable, adding that several educational, road, and empowerment projects linked to the lawmaker are already benefiting residents across the constituency. According to APYF, the deputy speaker has consistently demonstrated commitment to effective representation since assuming office, especially through projects targeted at improving learning conditions and expanding opportunities for young people. The organisation also said the relocation of project components or adjustments in implementation structure should not automatically be interpreted as fraud or diversion of public funds without concrete evidence from regulatory authorities. It added that public office holders should be held accountable through credible institutional processes rather than social media sensationalism capable of distorting facts and undermining public confidence. “The people of Bende federal constituency are not disconnected from developments within their communities. We have seen projects, interventions, scholarships, youth programmes, and strategic investments facilitated through the office of the deputy speaker,” Nwafor said. “To reduce an entire record of representation to allegations driven largely by assumptions does not reflect the realities on ground.” The group commended Kalu for what it described as responsive leadership and sustained engagement with community needs, noting that many youths in the constituency have benefitted from empowerment schemes, educational support programmes, and skills initiatives associated with his office. APYF further urged anti-corruption agencies and oversight institutions to continue carrying out their responsibilities professionally and without political pressure, stressing that accountability must remain evidence-based. The organisation said while civic scrutiny of public projects remains important in a democratic society, such scrutiny must also avoid creating false impressions capable of damaging reputations without verified findings. According to the group, the deputy speaker’s growing profile within national leadership is tied to his consistency in legislative engagement, constituency outreach, and developmental interventions across Abia State. |
Rivers 2027: Niger Delta Group Endorses Kingsley Chinda as Rainbow Coalition Candidate …Applauds Wike For Enthroning Inclusive Democratic Culture The Niger Delta Development Ambassadors (NDDA) has endorsed Kingsley Ogundu Chinda (aka OK Chinda) as a consensus candidate of the emerging “Rainbow Coalition” ahead of the 2027 governorship election in Rivers State. The group said Chinda possesses the political experience, legislative exposure, and cross-party acceptability required to consolidate the coalition’s broader objective of stability, inclusive governance, and development in the state. In a statement issued on Sunday and signed by King David Attah, national president of the organisation, the NDDA also commended Nyesom Wike, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), for his role in fostering a more inclusive democratic culture through the coalition arrangement currently gaining momentum in Rivers politics. The organisation described the Rainbow Coalition as a strategic political alignment involving multiple political interests and parties working together beyond partisan divisions for the collective development of Rivers state. According to the group, the coalition model reflects political maturity and could help reduce the prolonged tensions and divisive politics that have affected governance and democratic stability in the state in recent years. “The Rainbow Coalition represents a significant shift from politics driven solely by rivalry and exclusion to a broader culture of accommodation, consultation, and collective responsibility,” the statement read. “We commend the minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, for encouraging a political environment where different political tendencies can work together in pursuit of stability and development.” The group said Chinda, who currently represents Obio/Akpor Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, has remained one of the few political figures with relationships cutting across various blocs in Rivers politics. According to the NDDA, his experience within the National Assembly and his understanding of governance, lawmaking, and public administration position him as a credible figure capable of sustaining political balance within the coalition structure. The organisation added that Rivers State requires leadership capable of unifying competing political interests while prioritising infrastructure, economic growth, youth development, and security. “Rt Hon Kingsley Chinda has demonstrated capacity, political maturity, and the ability to engage across divides. At this critical point in Rivers politics, the state requires consensus builders rather than politicians driven by bitterness and endless conflict,” Attah said. The group also praised the conduct of the APC primaries in Rivers state, describing the process so far as peaceful, orderly, and reflective of growing democratic maturity among political stakeholders. According to the NDDA, the relatively calm atmosphere surrounding the primaries contrasts sharply with the tension and instability that have historically characterised political contests in the state. The organisation urged political actors across party lines to sustain the atmosphere of restraint and cooperation as alignments ahead of 2027 continue to evolve. It added that the success of the Rainbow Coalition would ultimately depend on its ability to place governance, development, and the welfare of Rivers people above narrow political interests. The group further called on youths and community leaders in the state to support initiatives capable of promoting peace, political inclusion, and long-term stability ahead of the next electoral cycle.

Concerned Citizens and Indigenes of Oroto Community, Ugbo Kingdom, Ilaje Local Government of Ondo State have rejected the imposition of Sepeluwa as the title of Oba in Oroto. The community in a statement by Oluwafemi Awenebi, said Oroto belongs to all the people of the community, and decisions concerning leadership and traditional institutions must reflect fairness, equity, and justice for everyone. It said: "We, the residents and indigenes of Oroto, are the rightful owners and occupants of this community. The entire community stands united in rejecting any attempt to force Sepeluwa on the people against their collective will as their domain is obenla. "We call on the Olubo family to stop using the instrument of the state to oppress and silence the voices of Oroto people, Egharegbemi is the Eldest, Leadership should be based on consultation, inclusiveness, and respect for the wishes of the people. For peace and unity to prevail, everybody must be carried along in matters affecting the community. "Oroto is for all of us, and the collective interest of the people must always come first. The governor should not impose a Sepuluwa on us, protest letters have been written to the governor and the chieftaincy and local government commissioner yet they want to still go ahead to present a staff of office. "We, the concerned people and indigenes of Oroto Community in Ugbo Kingdom, write this public correspondence with deep pain, concern, and dissatisfaction over the ongoing attempts to impose the title of “SEPELUWA” within our land and traditional structure without due consultation, lawful process, or historical legitimacy. "It has come to our attention that plans are underway by the Government to install a person under the title of “SEPELUWA” in Oroto Community. "This development has generated widespread tension, outrage, and serious concern among the peace-loving people of Oroto and the entire Ugbo Kingdom. "For months, our people have written several letters through the Ministry of Chieftaincy Affairs and Obas, as well as through the Office of the Executive Chairman of Ilaje Local Government, seeking clarification, dialogue, and peaceful resolution on this sensitive issue. "We have made repeated appeals, consultations, peaceful protests, and historical presentations to relevant authorities, yet our concerns have received little or no meaningful response. "We therefore find it necessary to state clearly and publicly that the people of Oroto reject the imposition of the so-called SEPELUWA title in our community. "Our position is based on historical facts, ancestral tradition, and the established customary structure of the Ugbo Kingdom. To the best of our historical knowledge and ancestral records, there has never existed a recognized traditional title known as “SEPELUWA” within the traditional institution of the Ugbo Kingdom. "Furthermore, we strongly maintain that no authority outside the recognized traditional stool of the Olugbo of Ugbo Kingdom possesses the customary right to install traditional leaders or create chieftaincy structures within Ugbo Kingdom. "Any attempt to bypass established customs and impose unfamiliar titles upon our people amounts to an abuse of traditional processes and a disregard for the historical identity of our kingdom. "The people of Oroto are law-abiding citizens who believe in peace, justice, and democratic engagement. However, peace can only thrive where there is fairness, consultation, and respect for the rule of law. "A government that truly serves the people must listen to the voices of the people and not force decisions upon them against their collective will and historical heritage. "The people of Oroto will continue to defend their ancestral rights, cultural identity, and historical truth through lawful and legitimate means. We refuse to remain silent while our traditions, history, and collective heritage are disregarded." |
“I Remain the Authentic Oniro of Iro Kingdom” — Oba Aromaye Heads to Appeal Court Over Removal Judgment The traditional leadership crisis rocking Iro Kingdom in Ogun State took a dramatic turn on Tuesday as the embattled monarch, Oba Najeem Aromaye, formally approached the Court of Appeal to challenge a recent High Court judgment nullifying his installation and directing him to vacate the throne after 13 years of reign. Reacting to the ruling, Oba Aromaye declared that he remains the legitimate Oniro of Iro Kingdom, insisting that the judgment would not stand as his legal team had already initiated an appeal process to overturn the decision. The monarch described the court verdict as a “sponsored judgment,” alleging that certain individuals opposed to his reign were behind what he termed a calculated attempt to destabilise the peace and unity of the kingdom. Speaking amid growing tension following the judgment, Oba Aromaye appealed to residents and indigenes of Iro Kingdom to remain calm and law-abiding, assuring them that the matter was strictly a legal dispute that would be resolved through due judicial process. “I am still the authentic Kabiyesi of Iro Kingdom,” the monarch declared. “The stool is not vacant for anyone. This is a legal battle and that is why we have appealed the judgment, which by the grace of Almighty God we are going to win against the enemies.” The monarch further warned against any form of violence or unrest in the community, stressing that no individual or group should exploit the court ruling to create chaos within the kingdom. He urged residents to continue with their lawful daily activities without fear, noting that peace and stability must remain paramount despite the ongoing legal tussle. Oba Aromaye also maintained that his administration had brought progress and development to the kingdom over the years, adding that forces opposed to such progress were determined to tarnish his reputation and forcefully remove him from the palace. The High Court judgment, which reportedly invalidated his ascension to the throne, has generated mixed reactions within and outside the kingdom, with supporters of the monarch insisting that justice would ultimately prevail at the appellate court. As the legal battle shifts to the Court of Appeal, observers say the outcome of the case could have far-reaching implications for the traditional institution and leadership structure within Iro Kingdom. He also advises people from spreading rumors and false narratives over the news and blogs as his legal counsels are on standby to take legal actions against any persons found doing such. Meanwhile, security and community stakeholders are expected to intensify efforts to maintain peace in the area as residents await the next phase of the judicial proceedings.

Court Throws Out ₦50bn Oil Spill Suit Against ExxonMobil, Affirms Oil Pipelines Act as Exclusive Remedy Staff Reporter, Uyo, Akwa Ibom | April 29, 2026 In a landmark judgment with potentially far-reaching consequences for environmental and oil spill litigation in Nigeria, the Federal High Court sitting in Uyo has dismissed a ₦50 billion suit filed against ExxonMobil, sued as Mobil Producing Nigeria Unlimited, now operating as Seplat Energy Producing. The suit, instituted by the Ejige Ore Njenyisi Muma & Fishing Co-operative Society Ltd., sought massive compensation over an alleged hydrocarbon spill said to have occurred on September 12, 2021. However, in a decisive ruling delivered by Honourable Justice Onyetenu, the court held that the plaintiffs failed to establish any legally recognisable wrong committed by the oil company. The judgment is already being described by legal analysts and stakeholders in the energy sector as a major judicial pronouncement on the scope and application of Nigeria’s Oil Pipelines Act, particularly Section 11(5), which governs compensation claims arising from oil pipeline operations. At the centre of the ruling was the argument advanced by Chinonso Ekuma, Esq. of KENNA LP, counsel to ExxonMobil, who contended that the plaintiffs improperly framed their action under common-law principles of negligence and nuisance instead of proceeding through the statutory compensation mechanism prescribed under the Oil Pipelines Act. The court agreed. Justice Onyetenu held that the plaintiffs’ claims were incompetent because Section 11(5) of the Oil Pipelines Act provides an exclusive statutory framework for pursuing compensation claims relating to pipeline incidents. According to the court, any attempt to circumvent that statutory regime by dressing such claims in the garb of common-law torts is legally unsustainable. Consequently, the court ruled that it lacked jurisdiction to entertain the matter and proceeded to dismiss the suit in its entirety. Legal observers say the judgment significantly strengthens the primacy of statutory remedies in oil spill disputes and may reshape future environmental litigation against oil and gas operators in Nigeria. In its findings, the court also placed considerable weight on the Joint Investigation Visit (JIV) Report tendered by the plaintiffs themselves. The report reportedly established that the alleged spill was confined within ExxonMobil’s operational facility and did not extend to the communities or fishing areas occupied by members of the claimant cooperative society. The court found that there was no evidence demonstrating adverse impact on the claimants’ livelihoods, fishing activities, or economic interests — a critical factor that weakened the plaintiffs’ case. The decision is expected to resonate strongly across Nigeria’s oil-producing region, where compensation claims arising from alleged spills and environmental degradation frequently result in prolonged litigation involving multinational oil companies. Industry experts note that the ruling clarifies that parties seeking compensation under pipeline-related disputes must strictly comply with the statutory procedure laid down by the Oil Pipelines Act. Failure to do so, the court affirmed, is fatal to such claims because it deprives the court of jurisdiction from the outset. Analysts further describe the judgment as a judicial reaffirmation of the statutory compensation architecture governing Nigeria’s petroleum sector, particularly at a time when environmental accountability and community claims remain contentious issues in the Niger Delta. For operators in the energy industry, the ruling offers renewed legal certainty regarding the procedure applicable to compensation disputes. It also reinforces the evidential importance of Joint Investigation Visit Reports, especially where such reports indicate absence of environmental or economic damage to claimants. The plaintiff was represented by K. O. Uzuokwu, Esq., while the defence was led by Chinonso Ekuma, Esq. of KENNA LP. With the Federal High Court’s pronouncement, legal practitioners believe future oil spill claims may now face stricter scrutiny, especially where litigants attempt to sidestep statutory provisions in favour of broader common-law claims. The ruling is widely expected to become a reference point in subsequent oil and gas litigation across Nigeria’s courts, particularly in disputes involving pipeline operations, compensation claims, and environmental liability.

Sofela Denies Stepping Down in Ogun Central APC Senatorial Race and being part of any consensus arrangement By Solanke Ayomideji Taiwo ABEOKUTA — A frontline aspirant for the Ogun Central Senatorial seat under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Emmanuel Adebola Sofela, popularly known as Shoffi, has dismissed widespread speculations that he has withdrawn from the race in favour of another aspirant . Sofela described the reports making rounds in some political circles as “false, misleading and the handiwork of political detractors,” insisting that he remains fully committed to his ambition of representing Ogun Central Senatorial District at the National Assembly. In a statement made available to journalists on Friday, the APC stalwart urged his supporters, political associates and loyalists across the six local government areas that make up Ogun Central to disregard the rumours and remain resolute in their support for his aspiration. According to him, there has never been any agreement or arrangement for him to step down for any aspirant to emerge as a consensus candidate of the party. “I want to categorically state that I have not stepped down for anyone in the Ogun Central Senatorial race. The rumours flying around are entirely false and should be ignored by all my supporters and members of the public,” he said. Sofela expressed confidence in his chances of securing the APC ticket, stressing that his popularity, political experience and grassroots connection across the district place him in a strong position ahead of the party primaries. The senatorial hopeful reiterated his determination to provide quality representation for the people of Abeokuta South, Abeokuta North, Odeda, Obafemi-Owode, Ifo and Ewekoro local government areas if elected into the Senate in 2027. He noted that his aspiration is driven by a genuine desire to contribute meaningfully to the development of Ogun Central through effective legislation, empowerment programmes and people-oriented policies. “My ambition is rooted in service to the people. I remain committed to the vision of giving Ogun Central a strong voice in the Senate and facilitating developmental initiatives that will positively impact our people,” Sofela added. The APC chieftain further appealed to party members to remain united and avoid distractions capable of causing division within the party structure ahead of future political activities. Political observers in the state believe the race for Ogun Central Senatorial seat is gradually gathering momentum as aspirants continue consultations and grassroots mobilization across the district ahead of the 2027 election cycle.

‘Jamiu Ogundele Is Our House of Assembly Consensus Candidate’ — Imeko-Afon APC Leaders By Solanke Ayomideji Taiwo Stakeholders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Imeko-Afon Local Government Area of Ogun State have thrown their weight behind Engr. Jamiu Oduayo Ogundele, popularly known as JAMSALOD, as the preferred candidate for the 2027 Ogun State House of Assembly election. The endorsement was announced in a communique issued after a strategic APC stakeholders’ meeting held on May 6, 2026, at the residence of Dr. Dele Ogunsiji. The gathering attracted prominent party leaders and stakeholders from the three political zones within the Imeko-Afon State Constituency. In the communique addressed to Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, the stakeholders commended the governor for his leadership style and political maturity in managing the process that produced Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola Yayi as the APC consensus governorship candidate for the 2027 election. The leaders praised Governor Abiodun for promoting inclusiveness, fairness and extensive consultations among party leaders and aspirants, describing his approach as instrumental in sustaining peace and unity within the APC. They also applauded the governor for supporting the long-standing aspiration of Ogun West Senatorial District and the Yewa-Awori people to produce the next governor of Ogun State for the first time. During the meeting, stakeholders reportedly examined growing concerns among youths in the constituency over what they termed prolonged political marginalization and lack of opportunities for younger generations. According to the communique, the leaders agreed that the time had come for a new generation of leadership, insisting that political positions should no longer remain in the hands of a few individuals for repeated terms. The stakeholders said their decision to adopt Engr. Ogundele was based on his loyalty to the APC, dedication to grassroots politics and commitment to community development. They noted that despite not occupying any public office, Ogundele had consistently supported initiatives in education, healthcare, youth empowerment and infrastructure development across the constituency. Describing him as a bridge-builder and grassroots mobilizer, the leaders said his emergence would represent a major step toward youth inclusion and political renewal in Imeko-Afon. “Engr. Jamiu Ogundele has shown capacity, humility and commitment to inclusive leadership across all wards and demographic groups in the constituency,” the communique stated. The APC stakeholders further maintained that Ogundele’s vision aligns with Governor Abiodun’s developmental agenda, especially in the areas of agriculture, security and economic empowerment at the grassroots level. In what appeared to be a direct criticism of the current lawmaker representing the constituency, the leaders declared that continued occupation of the seat by the incumbent had become “untenable,” stressing that democratic growth requires periodic leadership transition. They argued that adopting Ogundele as the party’s consensus candidate would strengthen unity within the APC and guarantee more effective representation for the people of Imeko-Afon at the Ogun State House of Assembly. The stakeholders therefore appealed to Governor Abiodun to endorse their decision and prevent any form of political imposition capable of disrupting party harmony ahead of the 2027 general elections. They also reaffirmed their loyalty to the APC and pledged to mobilize massive support for both the party and Engr. Ogundele during the election. Copies of the communique were reportedly forwarded to Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola Yayi, Secretary to the Ogun State Government Mr. Tokunbo Talabi, Chief of Staff to the Governor Dr. Oluwatoyin Taiwo, and Ogun State APC Chairman, Chief Yemi Sanusi. Speaking with AMEBO NEWSPAPER NG, former House of Representatives member and ex-commissioner in Ogun State, Dr. Dele Ogunsiji, appealed to Governor Abiodun to support the aspiration of competent young leaders within the party. He described Engr. Jamiu Ogundele as a credible and capable politician with verifiable records of leadership and community service. “We are supporting Jamiu Ogundele as our consensus candidate because of his leadership qualities and commitment to the growth of APC in Imeko-Afon, We have supported Senator Adeola Olamilekan Solomon YAYI as the flagbearer of All Progressives Congress APC, he should not leave us alone in Imeko-Afon assembly tussle” Ogunsiji said. He added, “I can boldly say that Hon. Jemili Akingbade has not consulted party leaders in Imeko-Afon regarding his ambition, perhaps because of concerns over his performance records.”

Defending Democracy in Ogun Central: A Call for Fairness and Non-Interference By Comrade Oluwakayode Samson Adedeji In every thriving democracy, the will of the people must stand above the influence of powerful individuals. Today, the voices of elders, party leaders, and faithful members across Ogun Central Senatorial District are united in a passionate appeal: our democratic space must be protected, and our right to choose must not be compromised. Recent developments have raised serious concerns among stakeholders in Ogun Central. There is a growing perception that the process of determining who represents the district in the Senate is being influenced from outside the constituency. Such interference, if allowed to persist, undermines the very essence of democracy — a system built on fairness, equity, and the free choice of the people. Our district is not lacking in capable aspirants. We have credible individuals who have worked tirelessly, built trust within the grassroots, and demonstrated commitment to the progress of our people. What they seek is not favouritism, but a level playing ground — a transparent and just process where every aspirant can contest freely, and the people can decide without pressure or imposition. Democracy thrives where there is openness, inclusiveness, and respect for due process. When external forces attempt to dictate outcomes, it erodes public confidence and breeds disillusionment among party faithful and the electorate at large. This is why the call from Ogun Central is clear and unequivocal: allow the process to be free, fair, and credible. We urge the Senate leadership, particularly Godswill Akpabio, to respect the autonomy of Ogun Central and refrain from actions that may be perceived as interference. Leadership at the national level should inspire unity and strengthen democratic values, not weaken them. The future of our district depends on the integrity of today’s decisions. If democracy must endure, it must be defended at every level — from the grassroots to the highest offices in the land. Ogun Central deserves the opportunity to choose its representative without undue influence, intimidation, or manipulation. This is not just about politics; it is about principle. It is about preserving the dignity of our people and ensuring that their voices are heard loud and clear. The credibility of our democratic system depends on it. Let fairness prevail. Let justice guide the process. Above all, let the people decide.

Official waste of government resources and national wealth, group slams NNPCL GMD over MOU with Chinese firm to revive dead refineries …demands accountability into past investment of $1 billion into the refineries A coalition of oil sector reform advocates has criticised the latest agreement by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited with Chinese firms to revive Nigeria’s refineries, describing the move as a wasteful recycling of failed strategies and a troubling signal of weak accountability in the management of public resources. The group, the Centre for Energy Sector Transparency (CEST), made its position known in a statement issued on Wednesday and signed by its executive director, Dr Oghenetega Edafe, following the announcement of a new memorandum of understanding between NNPC Ltd and two Chinese companies for a proposed technical equity partnership. The agreement is aimed at completing rehabilitation work and restarting operations at the Port Harcourt and Warri refineries, assets that have remained largely dormant despite multiple rounds of government-funded turnaround maintenance. Edafe said the development raises serious questions about fiscal discipline, policy coherence, and the absence of accountability for previous investments running into billions of dollars. “What Nigerians are witnessing is a troubling pattern of policy repetition without reflection. The same refineries that have gulped enormous public funds over the years are once again at the centre of a fresh round of agreements, yet there has been no transparent accounting of what has already been spent or why those investments failed to deliver results,” he said. The group specifically referenced earlier government approvals of over $1 billion for refinery rehabilitation projects, warning that proceeding with new partnerships without a public audit of past expenditures undermines trust in the system. “It is unacceptable that after committing over one billion dollars to refinery rehabilitation, the nation is being asked to embrace yet another agreement without a clear and verifiable audit of previous interventions. This is not just about policy failure; it is about the potential erosion of public trust in how national wealth is managed,” Edafe said. He argued that while the introduction of a technical equity model may appear innovative, it does not absolve the government and NNPC Ltd of responsibility for past inefficiencies and possible mismanagement. “The idea of bringing in technical partners with equity stakes is not inherently flawed. However, it becomes deeply problematic when it is introduced as a substitute for accountability. Before we speak of new partnerships, Nigerians deserve a full disclosure of how past funds were utilised, who was responsible for project delivery, and why the expected outcomes were not achieved,” he said. The group also warned that without institutional reforms, the proposed collaboration risks becoming another cycle of investment without sustainable results. “What is being presented as a strategic shift may, in reality, become another expensive experiment if the underlying governance issues are not addressed. Technical expertise alone cannot fix a system that lacks transparency, oversight, and consequences for failure,” Edafe said. The Centre called on the National Assembly and relevant anti-corruption agencies to initiate a comprehensive probe of refinery rehabilitation projects over the past decade, including contract awards, disbursements, and project execution timelines. “This moment demands more than optimism; it demands scrutiny. We call on oversight institutions like the National Assembly, Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and others to undertake a forensic examination of all funds committed to refinery rehabilitation, including the recent billion-dollar interventions. Nigerians must know what has been done with their resources and why the country is still dependent on fuel imports despite repeated promises of self-sufficiency,” he said. The Centre added that restoring confidence in Nigeria’s oil sector would require not just new agreements, but a demonstrable commitment to transparency, accountability, and institutional integrity.

From Refuse to Reform: OGWAMA Drives Ogun’s Environmental Revival Under Akintunde By Solanke Ayomideji Taiwo A quiet but determined transformation is underway in Ogun State’s environmental sector, as the Ogun State Waste Management Authority (OGWAMA) intensifies efforts to tackle long-standing waste challenges and restore cleanliness across the state. At the centre of this shift is the agency’s Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Alhaji Farouk Akintunde, whose leadership since early 2026 has introduced a more structured and results-driven approach to waste management. In just a few months, OGWAMA has rolled out a series of coordinated actions aimed at clearing waste backlogs, improving service delivery, and promoting sustainable environmental practices. Across major highways and inner-city roads, residents are beginning to notice a difference, as heaps of refuse that once lined streets are gradually being cleared. The agency’s clean-up operations have focused on key urban centres, including Abeokuta and surrounding communities, where waste accumulation had become a persistent concern. These efforts have not only improved sanitation but also enhanced the overall appearance of public spaces. Alongside the clean-up exercise, OGWAMA has stepped up enforcement of environmental laws. Authorities have adopted a zero-tolerance approach to illegal dumping, leading to arrests and prosecutions of offenders. Working closely with relevant security agencies, the authority is sending a clear message that indiscriminate waste disposal—especially in drainage channels and on road medians—will no longer be tolerated However, the agency’s approach goes beyond enforcement. OGWAMA is also pursuing reforms designed to modernise waste management in Ogun State. This includes strengthening partnerships with Private Sector Participants (PSPs) and recyclers to improve efficiency and ensure a more sustainable system. A major component of this reform agenda is the Blue Box Initiative, which encourages households to separate recyclable waste from general refuse. By promoting waste sorting at the source, the programme aims to reduce landfill pressure while creating opportunities for recycling and job creation. In a further push for innovation, OGWAMA is exploring collaboration with the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta. The proposed partnership is expected to introduce research-based solutions into the state’s waste management framework, helping to address challenges with data-driven strategies. Internally, the agency has also focused on improving its operations. Regular engagements with waste contractors and staff have been introduced, alongside clear performance targets for 2026. Worker welfare has received renewed attention, boosting morale within the system. One of the most notable achievements under the current leadership is the rehabilitation of critical equipment. More than ten waste trucks and compactors that had been out of use for years have now been repaired and returned to service, significantly improving waste evacuation capacity across the state. Attention has also been given to major dumpsites, including those in Saje and Kurata, where long-standing environmental concerns are being addressed. Residents of Saje, in particular, have welcomed recent interventions such as fumigation and the rehabilitation of access roads leading to the dumpsite. In addition, the agency has cleared over ₦200 million in outstanding payments owed to PSP operators, a move seen as crucial to restoring confidence and ensuring smoother operations within the sector. Office utility vehicles have also been refurbished to support field activities. Observers note that these developments mark a clear departure from past challenges that once plagued the authority, including operational inefficiencies and leadership disputes. The renewed alignment within the agency’s governing board is also being credited for the improved coordination now being witnessed. For many residents, the ongoing changes signal a hopeful shift. While challenges remain, the combination of enforcement, reform, and investment in infrastructure is gradually repositioning waste management in Ogun State as a system that not only addresses sanitation but also supports environmental sustainability and economic growth. As the state continues on this path, OGWAMA’s evolving strategy offers a model of how focused leadership and practical reforms can turn a persistent public problem into an opportunity for progress. IGP Advocates Nationwide Sensitisation On Environmental Crimes, Backs Police–NGO Collaboration The Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, has called for sustained nationwide sensitisation on environmental crimes, as a civil society organisation, CRUX Environmental Rights Advocacy and Development, seeks partnership with the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) to tackle ecological offences. Disu made the call while receiving representatives of the organisation on a courtesy visit, where discussions centred on strengthening environmental law enforcement and community-based crime prevention. He acknowledged that crimes against the environment posed serious threats to public health and safety, citing recurring flooding in Lagos as an example of the consequences of poor environmental practices. “Whenever it rains, floods come and people blame the government, whereas refuse is often dumped indiscriminately in drainages. Our waters are polluted and constitute health hazards,” he said. The police chief also raised concerns about wildlife depletion, illegal hunting, and the neglect of conservation efforts, noting that environmental protection required collective responsibility. While responding to a proposal for the establishment of a specialised police unit on environmental crimes, Egbetokun said the Force would instead prioritise awareness creation within its ranks and across communities. “What I will do is sensitise Commissioners of Police nationwide, who will in turn sensitise Divisional Police Officers to cooperate with you. Crime prevention is everybody’s business,” he said. He urged citizens to report environmental violations and collaborate with law enforcement agencies, including the police and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), to safeguard public infrastructure and natural resources. Disu recalled past environmental incidents, including the toxic waste dumping in Koko, Delta, and noted the activities of scavengers, locally referred to as “Babambola,” which he said contributed to infrastructure vandalism and urban nuisance. Earlier, Engr Koko Ademuyiwa, speaking on behalf of CRUX, said the proposed partnership aimed to establish a structured framework for combating environmental crimes such as illegal dumping, pollution, deforestation, unlawful mining, and wildlife trafficking. He said the collaboration would involve capacity building, technical support, joint monitoring operations, and community engagement to strengthen enforcement and promote environmental justice. Koko noted that despite constitutional provisions and existing environmental laws, enforcement remained weak due to limited technical expertise and coordination among relevant agencies. He cited Section 20 of the 1999 Constitution, which mandates the protection of the environment, as well as provisions of the Police Act, 2020, which empower the police to prevent and investigate all forms of crime, including environmental offences. According to him, the partnership would also leverage provisions of the Police Act that encourage inter-agency cooperation and specialised training, thereby enhancing the capacity of the Force to address environmental challenges. He added that strengthening environmental law enforcement was critical to addressing broader human rights concerns, including the rights to life, health and a clean environment.

Students Push Back: NANS Ogun JCC Convention Rocked by Allegations of Ogun DSS Interference A fresh wave of tension has gripped the student community in Ogun State following strong allegations of undue interference by the Department of State Services (DSS) in the forthcoming convention of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Ogun Joint Campus Council (JCC). In a statement released by concerned stakeholders under the banner of the NANS JCC Stakeholders Forum, student leaders warned against what they described as “sustained and troubling attempts” by security operatives to influence the outcome of the convention scheduled for May 2, 2026. The statement, signed by Comrade Olatoye Daniel, expressed alarm over alleged efforts to manipulate the list of delegate institutions—an action stakeholders say could compromise the integrity of the electoral process. According to the group, such interference undermines the long-standing principle that student leadership must emerge solely from the will of students. While acknowledging the statutory role of the DSS as defined under the National Security Agencies Act, the stakeholders emphasized that the agency’s mandate is limited to safeguarding Nigeria’s internal security. They argued that this responsibility does not extend to involvement in student union elections or leadership selection processes. “The convention is strictly a student affair, governed by the constitution of NANS and supervised by the national leadership,” the statement read. “Any attempt to dictate outcomes or alter delegate structures is a violation of democratic norms within the student movement.” The group further clarified that thirteen accredited institutions have already been officially recognized by the national leadership to participate in the convention, dismissing any external attempt to alter that arrangement as illegitimate. Raising concerns about the broader implications, the stakeholders warned that interference in student unionism could suppress independent voices and destabilize academic environments. They pledged to resist any such actions through lawful means, including peaceful mass action, legal challenges, and international advocacy. In a set of demands directed at the DSS, the group called for an immediate halt to all forms of involvement in the convention process. They also urged the agency to focus strictly on its core duty of providing security and to ensure the safety of all participants throughout the event. Observers note that tensions between student bodies and security agencies are not new, but the latest development highlights ongoing concerns about autonomy within student governance structures. Analysts say how the situation unfolds could set an important precedent for the relationship between state institutions and independent student organizations. As the convention approaches, all eyes remain on Ogun State, where students are determined to assert their right to self-governance in what they describe as a defining moment for unionism in Nigeria. The statement concluded with the historic rallying cry of student activism: “Aluta Continua, Victoria Ascerta”—a declaration signaling readiness to defend democratic principles within the student community. |
