Crime / Re: Man Commits Suicide By Hanging In Ilorin For Losing Bets by AmiableJay(m): 7:14am On Apr 17, 2018 |
PMWSpirit:LOL. One of the elements of a charge of murder is intention or mens rea. I don't think the Prosecution will succeed in establishing murder. The Criminal Code never contemplates 'infliction' of psychological trauma or any abstract injury as a definition for murder or cause of death. The only relevance psychology has in homicide is provocation which merely reduces liability to manslaughter. Can we say the man the man was provoked to commit suicide? If there was indeed any provocation, the culpable person here would be the person so provoked, that is the deceased. So there is no case against anybody here. Though I think his friend will continue to carry a social stigma and moral guilt for the rest of his life |

Literature / Nigerian, Romeo Oriogun Wins International Poetry Prize by AmiableJay(m): 1:55pm On May 02, 2017 |
Romeo Oriogun from Nigeria has emerged the winner of the 2017 Brunel International African Poetry Prize for his “beautiful and deeply passionate” writing on masculinity and desire. Now in its fifth year, the £3,000 major poetry prize, sponsored by Brunel University London and Commonwealth Writers, is aimed at the development, celebration and promotion of poetry from Africa. It is open to African poets worldwide who have not yet published a full poetry collection. The judges were unanimous this year in their decision that among a shortlist of ten stunning new poets selected from nearly 1,200 entries, Oriogun – who only began writing three years ago – should receive the prize for his outstanding poetry. The judges said: “Romeo Oriogun is a hugely talented and urgent new voice in African poetry. His poems are deeply passionate, shocking, imaginative, complex and ultimately beautiful explorations of masculinity, sexuality and desire in a country that does not recognise LGBT rights. We wish him all the best for the future.” Oriogun lives and writes in Nigeria. His poems have been featured in Brittle Paper, African Writer, Expound, Praxis, and others. He is the author of Burnt Men, an electronic chapbook published by Praxis Magazine. Oriogun was one of four Nigerian poets to reach this year’s shortlist, which included Sahro Ali (Somalia); Leila Chatti (Tunisia); Kayo Chingonyi (Zambia); Saddiq Dzukogi (Nigeria); Yalie Kamara (Sierra Leone); Kechi Nomu (Nigeria); Richard Oduor Oduku (Kenya); Rasaq Malik (Nigeria); and Nick Makoha (Uganda). The judges this year were the poets and academics: Chris Abani (Northwestern University); Kwame Dawes (University of Nebraska); Safia Elhillo (winner of the 2015 Prize); Patricia Jabbeh Welsley (Penn State University) and chair and founder, Bernardine Evaristo (Brunel University London). The Prize is a partnership between Brunel and Commonwealth Writers, and works closely with Kwame Dawes and the African Poetry Book Fund (APBF) at the University of Nebraska. All the winners and most of the shortlisted poets of the past four years have had poetry pamphlets published with APBF in their New Generation African Poets series of box sets, in partnership with US publishers Slappering Hol Press and Akashic Books. Some of these poets have also published, or are about to publish, their first full length collections. Source:http://www.africanpoetryprize.org/winner-2017-romeo-oriogun

Politics / French Newspaper Reveals Extensive British Espionage On Nigeria by AmiableJay(m): 4:54pm On Jan 20, 2017 |
A French daily afternoon newspaper, ‘Le Monde’ has published top secret British surveillance which targeted the director of the World Trade Organization, several multinational corporations, a top French businessman, and heads of state across Africa, including Nigeria. The reports were which were produced in partnership with an online publication, ‘The Intercept’, are based on documents provided by Edward Snowden, a whistleblower. ‘Le Monde’ reports that among those who were subject to the surveillance, which involved intercepting communications as they were being beamed between satellites were Nigeria’s former president, late Umaru Yar’Adua and his private secretary. The report said Nigerian billionaire and chairman of Heirs Holdings and the United Bank for Africa, Tony Elumelu, was among prominent business figures monitored. The report also revealed:“GCHQ spied on the employees of two major telecommunications companies - the South African firm MTN and Kuwait-based Zain. The agency focused in particular on “roaming managers” working for the companies in at least 15 African countries,” including Gabon, Ivory Coast, Tunisia, Congo, and Mali. It added: “The NSA systematically monitors telecom company employees’ emails with the explicit purpose of collecting roaming documents, which it describes as “necessary for targeting and exploitation.” In other words, roaming managers are not spied on because they are suspected of wrongdoing or because they are of political or economic interest; rather, they are merely viewed as a means to an end.” Other targets included Ghana’s former president, John Kufuor, Sierra Leone’s former leader Ernest Koroma, the presidential palace in Luanda, Angola and Chris Kirubi, a wealthy Kenyan businessman and radio-station owner who was described by Forbes in 2011 as the country’s “most flamboyant tycoon.” http://www.dailytrust.com.ng/news/general/french-newspaper-reveals-extensive-bri |

Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom. I love the camera. Its zooming capacity is incredible. Then the speaker too is awesome. I've not seen a phone with a better speaker. what is annoying about it is that its 1.5 gig ram fills up too fast thus rendering it slow. Also, the battery is not fantastic and sometimes it gets insanely hot when surfing the web. But overall, it's an efficient phone. |

LolaHokmat, verily verily your story is full of sweetness. It's been long I read any story on Nairaland since the days of Flow1579, Frank etc but somehow your story hit a strong chord. However, you've a lot of work to do on your punctuations and few typos up there to correct. And while I appreciate the fact that it's a short story so the tempo of the plot must move fast, I feel it's too speed. Someone like me likes suspense a lot and ever since Dare and Stella re-meeting, there haven't been any engaging suspense to sustain interest except of course for Tiara's involvement. Anyway, you own your story and so the reins are in your hand. But please you can try and include some plot slower to reinforce suspense. On the overall, you've a simple, yet engaging story dear. Thumbs up and please serve us the next goddamn update. Can't wait! |

Agriculture / EU Extends Ban On Beans Import From Nigeria By 3years by AmiableJay(m): 8:42pm On Jun 09, 2016 |
The European Union has extended its ban on importation of dried beans from Nigeria by three years. Dr Vincent Isegbe, the Coordinating Director, Nigeria Agricultural Quarantine Service (NAQS) disclosed this Thursday in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN). NAN recalls that EU banned importation of Nigeria’s dried beans in June 2015 on ground that the produce contains high level of pesticide considered dangerous to human health. Isegbe, however, lamented that the extension came when the Federal Government and its relevant agencies were working to ensure that the June dateline to lift the ban was met. The director quoted the official journal of the EU, of accusing Nigeria of not doing enough to lift the ban during the period of suspension “The continued presence of dichlorvos (pesticide) in dried beans imported from Nigeria and maximum residue levels of pesticides shows that compliance with food law requirement as regards pesticide residual cannot be achieved in the short term. “The duration of the importation prohibition should therefore be extended for an additional period of three years to allow Nigeria implement the appropriate risk-management measure and provide required guarantees. “The measures provided for in this regulation are in accordance with the opinion of the standing committee on Plants, Animals, Food and Feed,’’ Isegbe further quoted the journal as saying. He, however, said the extension should serve as opportunity for stakeholders to put their hands together to correct the mistake. Isegbe called for sensitisation of stakeholders, especially farmers to do the needful from the farming stage and ensure that this embarrassment do not repeat itself.http://peoplemonthlyonline.ng/eu-extends-ban-beans-import-nigeria-3years/ Source :

I don't know if that is general but I am disappointed with your Ibadan branch. I went there today explaining that I want to flash the Infinix XUI ROM to one of the engineers I met there. 30 minutes later, he gave me back the phone with the same AndroidOne ROM. Poems For Review / A Poem Will Not Write Itself by AmiableJay(m): 4:46pm On Jan 01, 2016 |
Love will not help you love In your slumber, heaven offers its muse But shan't spur your verses in motion When each line as in your dream Like a plot it is, fades in your head. A poem will not scribe itself Though the rhythm dance merrily Your pen, ink-rich gazes From a pile of poetry manuals. A song will not sing itself It wants of a voice, melody and sweat. A war cannot fight itself But by a pair of steel swords And witless rage on either side Peace will not quell its rift It needs humble hearts Ego bruised and seared By the glittering scars of meekness And arms ready to do no more harms Though the enemy lines crumble in disarray And the walls levelled to bramble Lo! The White Flag needs not taboo their communal pride. A story will not write itself The gods give their alms of inspiration So let your fingers wield the quill Buried in a blanket of cobwebs and dust. Your mouth in quick bursts Must spit wits as an adder's fangs A poem will not fight for the commons If each lines in trenches lie Signalling, "we're but civilians" But then, without wait, I'll shoot my words Clean and fair, with youth and zeal A bunch of fingers on either arms And that question friend, is Will your poem write itself? This song ain't goin' write itself" Eminem -When I'm gone. So it's a new year. Most of our failures arise out of inactions and rarely out of our actions. Imagine if Wole Soyinka upon being inspired failed to rouse himself from slumber and write great poems like Abiku, Telephone Conversation, Civilian and Soldier and the likes. Or if Shakespeare expected one magnanimous God to write the globally acclaimed works of Macbeth, Romeo and Juliet, Othello or Merchant of Venice. Or if Bill Gates didn't take a decisive action to found Microsoft. The possibility is endless as well as dreadful. The best way to mediocrity is to fold your hands and do nothing. This year 2016 should inspire you to take charge of your life and do something that will continue to resonate through the centuries yet unborn. Indeed Benjamin Franklin rightly said "Either write something worth reading or do something worth writing." So comrades, are you gonna write that poem, invent that thing, make that discovery or let mediocrity get the better part of you. Yes, you'll fail, that I assure you. But you'll learn and become better with each try. HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYBODY 2 Likes

A new year births an era of greatness, an epoch of grace and hope of recovery from the hurts of yesteryears. It sparkles like a rare gem and renders an ode to the bright future now at our door step.
