U.I and surprises!
Congratulations to you guys. Just calm your nerves and stop being jittery. And ermmm pray! Prayer is a key factor in everything. No jacking is sufficient to earn you success...and make sure you dress well as instructed oh. U.I is very strict with their orders. And your jamb result should be the original, to be on the safer side. About the shortlisting issue, it is 90 percent probable that U.I will invite everybody for the exam especially the first choice candidates(I'm not too sure about the preference)
All the same, I wish you the best of luck as you embark on a 'mission' that will crown you as a student of the First and the Best. GOODLUCK!

zezeny: As for those of u coming to study law in UI. I'm happy to inform u dat u've not made d wrong choice at all. The University of Ibadan is one of d best schools in Nigeria where u can get ur legal education. As we all know, UI has d highest number of professors in Nigeria, therefore, dere is no more debate on d fact dat u are coming to a faculty where u meet professors.
Furthermore, our lecture rooms are so conducive for learning. Apart from d fact dat dey are situated within d faculty premises which makes it practically uneccessary for u to roam about taking lectures, dey also av capacities dat can conviniently accommodate students.
As regards teaching, our faculty teaches law in its modern form. We hold moot and mock competitions which is d practical aspect of wot we are being taught in class. We also engage in healthy debates both within and outside our university. It wud also interest u to hear dat faculty of law, UI is d only law faculty in Nigeria dat takes "CLL 103 and 104 - Latin for Lawyers" (I stand to be corrected) which is a special course to teach law students Latin and latin maxims which are used by lawyers in d course of their practice in Nigeria.
Time and d stress of typing would not permit me to mention more packages in our faculty as dere are still many more.
All I need to tell u is to come into d faculty focused and determined. And also av at d back of your mind dat "prayer and hardwork" do it. We don't learn "law" alone, we also learn "character". In d University of Ibadan as a whole, we don't give or take bribes. We believe in equity and sound judgement. That is d more reason why our admission is based strictly on "merit" and nothing else.
Once again I welcome u. Thanks.
Ita vero!

EducationRe: A Thread For Law And Philosophy Undergraduates, Graduate and Aspirant. by AmiableJay(m): 7:31pm On Sep 05, 2013
zezeny: Well, I so much commend the effort of @fynestboi for making dis wonderful thread a reality. I must also apologize for contributing dis late. I was not available on this thread for sometimes now. I hope my apology is accepted.
However, I tink I shud officially introduce myself b4 moving any further. I am popularly known as ZEZENY on nairaland. I'm a 100level student of the prestigious faculty of law, University of Ibadan. My flair to study law I must say came at a much later time in my educational career. I'd always wanted to be an accountant which informed my decision to go to the commercial class in my secondary school. However, I discovered I'm very poor in mathematics which affected my grade in the subject in my o'levels. Without maths, no accounting as we all know. That was how my dream of becoming an accountant became battered.
I however opted for Arts in d university. Cos I was in d commercials in my secondary school, I did nor offer literature, so I cud not do english. I however went for anoda course in Arts in OAU.
Meanwhile, I knew in me dat I wanted to be a professional. I wud not allow dis dream to go unachieved. Dat made me sit 4 gce where I passed literature nd oda arts subjects. I den opted 4 law in UI, where I'm currently studying.
Now, It turns out to be a blessing for me because I av a first degree to back my law degree. This will forever continue to be an advantage for me even after joining d bar because it is believed dat "law does not operate in a vacuum". An added degree gives u an edge.
Zezeny of life! Na you oh!
EducationRe: A Thread For Law And Philosophy Undergraduates, Graduate and Aspirant. by AmiableJay(m): 11:49pm On Sep 04, 2013
Creative mind: . Let me start with this experience i had as a law student before i graduated few months back. Whenever a law student did anything then, even if it's a normal thing i.e buying fruit in public (not eating it) or you are spotted at a party or something, the noise is "HA! Yet you call yourself a law student", " imagine a lawyer at a party" etc. I once told someone even lawyers are not God, let alone law students. Don't misconstrue me, i'm not saying we should be seen peeling banana on the street or displaying multi-colour hair style in parties like any other students but one thing is, as much as SLEEPING in a garage doesn't make one a car and Speaking English doesn't make ladies the Queen of England, our knowledge of law doesn't vindicate us from our Nigerian heart. Now to the issue, it isn't about just the training in school that isn't sufficient but also some other factors. On most occasions, the sermon preached to you is "don't chase money when you become a lawyer, it will come". But have they ever considered what it takes Danjuma, Ngozi and Asake to become lawyers? Do they consider the loans procured by our parents to ensure we do not die the death of hopelessness or elongated hope syndrome? Now, i'm going to the law school by October and i know the hundred of thousands i'll sniff from my nose. I'm presently sure of two things, one is my parents can't afford it now and two is God will do it before then but ordinarily, ensuring law is followed stricto senso is justice on its own but how do you expect young lawyers to stand for justice when their parents seek loan to see them through? You expect them to see a poor woman whose daughter was raped and institute an action on her behalf knowing that she can't even afford a thousand naira? Or to subject the government to a legal battle when their action is against the law, knowing that if you're not on their side you hardly make it? No, i'm not saying we should neglect our core duty but i'm being realistic here. I know no matter what, i'm determined to be a lawyer of men and not desperate laurel and money chasing wig but how many people can do this? I've written plethora of articles to tackle the government in my little capacities. On Nation, Tribune, Sahara reporters, Africanoutlook and even you can see my write ups here but for how long can i do that if we keep on taking it as lawyers affair alone? Won't my brother vast in tailoring help me fight corruption? Is Chief Nkem not going to stop nepotism? Won't Alhaji Yaro desist from Tribalism? And what of Mr. Owonikoko's habit of graft and patronage? I think it is not just about the law, the lawyers or the law students. It is about our mind set as Nigerians. Remember that when a child grows in the midst of hostile relatives, he learns to condemn and people point to their house to seek solace. Let me end by the time-honoured truism of Judge J.W Donovan when he said "a lawyer of men must know much of life and much of human nature, he should be a notice in nothing and wide-minded in all things. Though not a genius but ripe in broad knowledge and General experience. If he is this and he fails, it will be no fault of his own". That general experience and broad knowledge is what is lacking. Let us look from within and see that leaving lawyers alone to tackle this menace is like SEARCHING FOR AN HONEST MAN WITH A STOLEN LANTERN. I humbly submit for Now. NOTE: Typed on my phone and i'm feeling dizzy, please neglect any negligible grammatical error.
I think the fundamental problem lies on the society. We need to cleanse our mindset from all these attitudes which I believe is the ultimate solution to most of our problems. Well, back to you, I believe you wont let the ugly circumstances deter you from fighting with every means within your capabilities Sir.

Since the first course we law students come across in our legal education is legal method, I would like us to know WHAT IS LEGAL METHOD?
Legal method in the simplest words can be defined as the study of the techniques of thinking like a lawyer.
My ogas in the room contribute.

Creative mind: I don't think so brother. Graduated from the University of Ilorin and I did over 3 law courses in my first year. E.g Introduction to Business law, Introduction to Private and Property Law, Introduction to Constitutional Law, Policing in Nigeria, Legal Method etc.
It's not the same in every institutions sir. In U.I, we're offering two law courses in Year one. The reason why it's not so in Ilorin is because law in Unilorin is four years.

I am highly impressed with how the OP has created such a nice thread like this.. Hmm, well Law law law. I will say law is a very complex discipline and it requires a dogged spirit and an high level of study to perfect your legal skills (Theoretical and Practical). Law is also intertwined with philosophy and as a famous scholar remarked (cant remember), lawyers are servants of LOGIC while philosophers are masters of logic, showcases the basic relationship between law and philosophy..
Nice work OP, but as someone said try and make the thread livelier. The long posts are kinda boring to read..
