This write up is good, honestly. Well done OP. Unfortunately, I've passed this stage. Somehow I'm not bothered about the purpose of the scheme any more but I must say your last paragraph sums it all... |

Jobs/Vacancies › Re: Referee Details Or "Available Upon Request"? What's Your Opinion? by amicable09(f): 10:28am On Jan 09, 2016 |
Nihilist: My career experience in Nigeria is limited to NYSC, and even that was 'worked' if you know what I mean.
That being said, I don't believe that the job market in the UK where I live and work is significantly different to Nigeria. As you might have seen from most of the other responses on here, most of the people who put their references on their CV are doing so merely to impress the readers by the stellar names willing to act as personal referees.
I don't feel that I need to impress anyone based on my contact list, when my CV is good enough to speak for me. Thus, I can afford to withhold my referees until such a time as is necessary. In a worst case scenario, where a job description and remuneration package sound really attractive, but the recruiter is resolutely demanding a reference before getting the ball rolling, I am not above giving a fake name, along with matching fake email address, and phone number(Both of which I have access to)... Ok, I understand. Just that it's my first time seeing this side of things where it is not advisable to put details of referee on one's CV because we suspect recruiters and HRMs, other than that, I find it difficult to believe the suspicions written here like 'recruiters will go behind my back to contact my referee and I will be displaced' ... It is still possible though. |

Jobs/Vacancies › Re: Referee Details Or "Available Upon Request"? What's Your Opinion? by amicable09(f): 8:06am On Jan 09, 2016 |
Nihilist: I don't supply references until I get an offer of an interview ESPECIALLY, if I'm applying for a job through a 3rd party recruiting agent.
The reason is this: Several agents advertise fake jobs for the purpose of generating leads -if you're leaving your job and put your hiring manager down as a reference, it's logical for recruiters to chase him/her down and try to backfill your position.
Nothing for nothing is my motto. If I'm on the phone to a particularly pushy agent, I always politely inform them that I am happy to provide a reference only after an interview is secured.
Most professional agents understand this. The ones who don't, or refuse to, are probably people you don't want to do business with anyway... Very insightful but I feel this is most suited for experienced hire and in advanced/developed countries. I'll like to know if you did this for entry level jobs when you were just starting out in your career here in Nigeria. |

Ps tollyb has a dairy didn't know check it out Amicable09 that was one devotion #go to the village, you can tell them about Lero that will calm them down Lol. mtor you should know this type of devotion, it starts very early in the morning and for hours there is no hope of nearing the end! I have been telling Lero to speed things up oh! lol... He'll be here and a village man will hijack me *winks. About your test, ask that it be rescheduled! Get enough materials first, study and make sure your confidence level is high before going for it! I know someone who ignored it and they kept inviting him, whichever you use but don't go unprepared. Wishing you big success *smiles |

TheRealAdonye: Hmm.. Long story.
I was in a lot of organizations and I held leadership positions in most of them whilst in school. My life wasn't all Book, Book.. The Book sef, I no kuku know.. Also, I attended a lot of conferences some which were relevant to what I was applying for.
I was opportuned to meet with a Resume writing expert which the Career department of my school brought during a Resume writing workshop. I went through each and every line of my then Resume and we greatly improved what I had then.
And I've come far from that now..
As for References, mine are available on request, Very few companies in my experience seek out your referees before employment for entry level positions. Besides, if they call you to request for references, at least you know your file isn't in one corner.
Work's great by the way. Thanks for asking.
How you doing? Oh! I see. Really good. I'm doing well, thanks too. |
