Nigeria, others partner in $100 million global collaboration to leverage Artificial Intelligence for Development

The Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation & Digital Economy has today announced that Nigeria has joined a new global partnership to leverage Artificial Intelligence to solve some of the most critical challenges in the developing world.

This partnership, which was launched at the first ever global AI Safety Summit in the UK yesterday, will see partners like the UK government, through its ‘AI for Development’ programme, Canada, the United States, Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and other partners in Africa fund safe and responsible AI projects for development around the world.

The $100 million partnership will initially focus on Sub-Saharan Africa, in a deliberate effort to ensure that this ground-breaking technology is available to all. The funding will support local expertise and technological capacity to support the efforts of the continent’s AI innovators as they build solutions for long-term development.

According to Dr. ‘Bosun Tijani, Honourable Minister for Communications, Innovation & Digital Economy, who led Nigeria’s delegation to the global AI Safety Summit in London, where the partnership was announced “Artificial Intelligence (AI) offers an unprecedented opportunity to appropriate knowledge more quickly and seamlessly in addressing some of our pressing social and business challenges. Our duty as policymakers is to ensure that our nation can participate and mainstream value creation from AI”.

The Honourable Minister also added “As we embark on this journey to accelerate our investment in the use of AI for good, it is essential to collaborate with long-standing allies to deepen our capacity and knowledge.

This is why the “AI for Development" programme of the UK government represents a significant step in our journey to harness AI for our collective prosperity”
This partnership, which is in line with the FMoCIDE’s Strategic Blueprint, will further support ongoing Federal Government initiatives like the recently launched National AI Research Scheme, to build Nigeria’s capacity in AI as part of our long term commitment to deepen the application of AI for economic prosperity.

The global collaboration which spans the next 5 years will among other details, fund postgraduate training and fellowships in AI in African countries, support investment in building data models that ensure accurate representation of Africa, build responsible AI governance frameworks to manage the potential risks of using AI and provide overall support for Sub-Saharan countries to participate more effectively in the global discourse on how AI is used to support the United Nation Sustainable Development Goals.

1. The world is now seeing massacre being perpetrated by the Israelis against the Palestinians on their high definition TV screens. Every detail is shown. New born babies dying as electricity is cut off and the oxygen flow to their cribs stopped.

2. Boys and girls wounded and dying being pulled out of collapsed building which had been bombed or rocketed by the Israelis. The wounded are being rushed on stretchers to ruined hospitals. The dead enshrouded with white cloth lying scattered on the ground.

3. The survivors crying and wailing as they hug the bodies of adults, children and women who had been killed.

4. This is not war. We see only Israeli soldiers. No Palestinian soldiers. Only civilians running about frantically as they search for family members who were missing. There may be fighting but it can only be between Israeli soldiers against Palestinian civilian. Yet the bombs and rockets have pulverised the whole city.

5. I cannot believe that this is happening. Long ago when the German Nazis were killing Jews in gas chambers, I felt a great pity for them.

6. I thought that Jews would understand what suffering means. I thought that they would never inflict such suffering on others.

7. But now I and the rest of the world are witnessing Jewish bestiality against the people who gave them asylum when the Europeans oppressed them.

8. Jews fled to Muslim countries when Ferdinand and Isabella reconquered Spain. They, the Jews and the Muslims were given three choices.

9. They could convert to Christianity, or emigrate or be put to death. Most chose to migrate. The Jews had no land of their own. So they migrated to Tunisia, Algeria, Morocco and Turkey. These were all Muslim countries. They also migrated to Palestine.

12. And since then there were violent wars as the expelled Palestinians tried to regain their land.

NNPC/Aiteo Joint Venture Launches Nembe Crude Oil Grade …As Export of Two 950,000 barrels Cargoes Commences

The NNPC/Aiteo Joint venture has announced the introduction of Nembe Crude Oil Grade, a new crude oil grade into the international crude oil market.

The announcement of the Nembe Crude Oil Blend, produced by Aiteo, the Operator of the NNPC/Aiteo Oil Mining Lease (OML) 29 Joint Venture (JV), was made at the ongoing Argus European Crude Conference in London, on Tuesday.

OML 29, an asset located onshore Nigeria, is operated by Aiteo Eastern Exploration & Production Ltd, Africa’s leading indigenous hydrocarbon producer, following a historic acquisition from Shell in 2014.

The Nembe Crude was previously blended with the popular Bonny Light grade and exported via the Bonny Oil & Gas Terminal.

The unique selling point of the Nembe Crude Oil grade with an API gravity was highlighted by both the Aiteo E & P and NNPC Limited Leadership at the Argus Conference in London.

The Nembe Crude Oil grade also has a low sulphur content and low carbon footprint due to flare gas elimination, fitting perfectly into the required spec of major buyers in Europe.

Two cargoes of 950,000 barrels each of the Nembe Crude Oil grade have since been exported to France and the Netherlands. With its attractive Assay of API 29 and low sulphur content, the Nembe Crude Oil grade commands a premium to the global Brent benchmark.

With the NNPC-Aiteo OML 29 JV back onstream, Nigeria now boasts of an additional crude oil export of 2 Cargoes at 950,000 barrels each per month and 1.2 Bcf of export gas monthly.

This remarkable achievement signals the commencement of activities at Nigeria’s newest crude oil terminal, the Nembe Crude Oil Export Terminal (NCOET), which was licensed in line with the extant laws and Crude Oil Terminal establishment regulations.

The terminal was conceived as a Floating Storage and Offloading Vessel (FSO) with a storage capacity of two (2) Million Barrels and the ability to offload crude oil to any export tanker from AFRAMAX to Very Large Crude Carriers (VLCC).

It has a loading capacity of 25,000 barrels per hour and will be exporting over 3.6 million barrels of Crude oil monthly at full scale of operation.

Currently, hydrocarbon production from OML 29, which was hitherto constrained due to evacuation challenges owing to the security issues around the Nembe Creek Trunk Line (NCTL) corridor, has now been debottlenecked through a collaborative and creative approach that led to the innovation of the Alternative Crude Oil Evacuation Solution.

The Argus European Crude Conference 2023 in London is a gathering of energy majors, refiners, NOCs, traders, financial institutions, and other representatives from across the global oil markets. The event also provides a critical opportunity for business leaders to connect, discuss, share and learn from one another.
