CrimeNigerian arrested With Ingested Cocaine in india by amzee(op): 1:12pm On Feb 12, 2017
India’s Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) has recovered 1.3 kilograms of fine quality Colombian cocaine stashed in 90 capsules
from the stomach of a Nigerian , who had come to Delhi from Lome, Togo.

According to The Times of India, the accused was taken to hospital where an X-ray confirmed the presence of foreign
bodies in his stomach. He was kept in the hospital for two days during which he expelled 90 capsules containing 1.3kg
cocaine.

The Nigerian was identified as Monday Tony Okonkwo. He arrived IGI airport in an
Ethiopian Airlines plane on February 6.

“When we conducted a thorough search of his body and baggage, he denied having any drugs or banned substance with him.
However, the NCB team got suspicious when he said that he had come to India regarding
his business of wigs and hair, but was found travelling on a tourist visa,” said Rajender Pal Singh, deputy director general,
NCB.

Tony was taken to Safdarjung hospital where an X-ray confirmed the presence of foreign bodies in his stomach. During interrogation, the man revealed that he had
ingested the drug capsules at a guesthouse in Lagos.

“The accused said he took around three hours to ingest the capsules and then took a flight to Lome. He then travelled to Addis Ababa from where he boarded a flight to
New Delhi. His passport has corroborated the claims,” Singh said.

Monday Tony Okonkwo was supposed to deliver the drugs to another distributor who
would have contacted him once his Indian number was active. “We are on the lookout for his handlers based in India and Nigeria,”
Singh added.

NCB believes the cartel is being run by a group based in Peru or Bolivia and is the same one that had employed a Brazilian
woman earlier to carry the contraband in swallowed packs.

The consignments were first taken to Sao Paolo, Brazil and then distributed throughout west African countries through
carriers. The drug was brought to India via Ethiopia or Abu Dhabi.

“When we conducted a thorough search of his body and baggage, he denied having any drugs or banned substance with him.
However, the NCB team got suspicious when he said that he had come to India regarding
his business of wigs and hair, but was found travelling on a tourist visa,” said Rajender Pal Singh, deputy director general,
NCB.

PoliticsGov. El-rufai Condemns Destruction Of Military Foundation Structure In Kaduna by amzee(op): 12:11pm On Feb 12, 2017
Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-
Rufai, yesterday, condemned the
destruction of the foundation
laying structure of the proposed
Army battalion Southern Kaduna by unknown persons and described the action as unfortunate.

A statement signed by Special
Assistant on Media and Publicity to Governor El-Rufai, Samuel Aruwan quoted El-Rufai as saying:
“The conflict entrepreneurs are
determined to continue to create
obstacles and setback to our
stabilization and peace building
efforts.”

The statement continued: “I
received the news with shock over
the unfortunate destruction of
foundation laying structure of the
proposed Nigerian Army battalion
in Southern Kaduna. The very
structure we erected to establish
the long-awaited Army Barracks to assist promotion of peace and end the decades of senseless
bloodletting in the southern part
of Kaduna State.

“The situation is unfortunate,
condemnable and a setback to the
government’s communal
stabilization and peace building
efforts, but we will not be
deterred.”

In a similar reaction, another
concerned group, Southern
Kaduna Concerned Youth
(SOKACOY), also described the
development as a major set back
to peace restoration agenda in
Southern Kaduna by enemies of
the troubled areas.

Coordinator of the group, Adamu
Barde Kagarko, in a press
conference said, “Our attention
has been drawn to the wicked act
that was perpetrated by our
enemies who have destroyed the
Foundation of the military base
that was laid by the Chief of Army
Staff and His Excellency, Governor
Nasir Ahmed El-Rufai in Kafanchan
last weekend. We condemn it in its totality and we hope and pray that the perpetrators will be brought to book. It is very sad that when Government is making frantic efforts to secure our region, some enemies of the state from our region are carrying out these
unwholesome acts for whatever
reasons that is best known to
them.”

Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Tukur
Yusuf Buratai and Governor El-
Rufai had last week laid the
foundation for the establishment
of the battalion at Ungwan Yashi
area of Zangon Kataf Local
Government as a response to the
incessant killings occurring in
Southern Kaduna since 1980.

Foreign AffairsBangladesh Probes Politician's Walk On 'human Bridge (photo) by amzee(op): 7:59am On Feb 06, 2017
DHAKA:

Bangladesh authorities ordered an
investigation Thursday after images of a politician and a then wealthy businessman
clambering over groups of students who had been forced to form a human chain
went viral.

Parents lodged complaints this week after dozens of students were made to stand and
form a bridge out of their bodies for an elected mayor who then walked over them in the central district of Chandpur.

It was followed by a similar incident in which a businessman was seen walking on the shoulders of students in a
celebration to mark his donation of a piece of land to a school in the district of Jamalpur.

Photos of have since gone viral on social media and were widely published in local newspapers, sparking a welter of criticism.
“This is a very disturbing and bizarre incident. I’ve directed the police to take the necessary legal steps,” Shahabuddin Khan,
chief government administrator of Jamalpur district, told AFP.

“The students’ parents said they did not send their kids to school be part of this kind of thing which have a negative impact.”
Chandpur’s district administrator appeared to defend the mayor Nur Hossain, who is a ruling Awami League party official, saying it was a traditional celebration for an honoured guest.

“But we’ve an ordered investigation. We are trying to find out whether the elected
official did it intentionally,” he told AFP,
adding the mayor has since “apologised for his action”.

It was not immediately clear whether either man had actually broken the law but there
were widespread calls on Facebook for their arrest on the grounds they had humiliated
students.

“The people who organise and participate in such events should be punished. We don’t
need any tradition which requires
belittlement of human beings,” one Facebook user Ariul Islam wrote.

PoliticsWhy We Are Running Away From Our People After Elections – Katsina Speaker by amzee(op): 9:52pm On Dec 12, 2016
The Speaker of
Katsina State House
of Assembly, Aliyu
Sabiu Muduru, has
given reasons why some lawmakers
avoid their their constituencies,
saying that the decision of the lawmakers may not be unconnected
with how people make personal demands rather than collective
needs of the electorate.

Muduru made the
disclosure at a one day
interactive forum
tagged “Citizens Conservation and
National Interest”
organized by National
Orientation Agency
(NOA) in collaboration
with a German based
foundation, Konrad
Adenauer Stiftung,
held at Liyafa Palace
Hotel Katsina.

He urged the stakeholders to
enlighten the public on
the primary role of the
elected public officials
in order to overcome
one the challenges
facing the smooth
growth of democracy
and ensure that law
makers do not shy
from the electorate.
Reviewing the score
card of the house,
Muduru disclosed that
the state legislators
had passed no fewer
than 18 bills into law
and endorsed over 130
motions in their
efforts to render
quality service to the
electorate in the
current legislative year.

In his keynote address, second republic law maker, Senator Abba Ali, expressed worry that most members of the national and state
assemblies shun their
constituencies after
their election.

Citing greed and
ingratitude of some
lawmakers as the
actual reason many of
them shun their
electorate, the chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) urged them to always remember their social contract with their people.

“Many senators and
members of the
House of Representatives are
particularly found
guilty of this negative
attitude. Probably due
to greed and not
appreciating or realizing or conceding to the fact that it is the huge sum of money they collected
every now and then as
genuine and less than
genuine allowances
and constituency
projects that cause
the rush,” he said.

Earlier, the state director of NOA, Armaya’u Liti Rimaye,
noted that the programme was
designed to promote
transparency and
accountability in
governance as well as
create awareness
among stakeholders
on government
business.

He was also optimistic
that the forum would
promote democracy,
rule of law, unity and
dignity of labour while
creating a platform for
public education.
