Five PDP members of the House of Representatives defects to APC. They announced their defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC). The federal lawmakers who defected to the opposition include; Isiaka Mohammed, Ibrahim El-sudi (Taraba), Adams Jagaba (Kaduna) , Hambe Herman (Benue) and Ahmed Aisha Dahiru (Adamawa). The House members’ defection is believed not to be unconnected with the manner their hitherto party’s primaries were conducted which led to their failure to secure a return ticket. Previously, the PDP had 189 members as against the 159 seats occupied by the APC members in the lower chamber. With Tuesday’s defection, PDP’s number has now dropped to 184 while that of the APC grows to 164. The remaining 12 seats are in the kitty of smaller parties. This loss of five members by the ruling party further forecloses the possibility of securing the consent of 240 of the 360-man chamber needed to impeach Speaker, Aminu Tambuwal. |
The Peoples Democratic Party and the All Progressives congress will definitely be at each other’s neck in what promises to be a tight electioneering year. LEADERSHIP correspondents explore the strengths and weaknesses of candidates across the geo-political regions of Nigeria and below are their findings: North East Region BAUCHI In Bauchi, the contest for the state’s number one seat is between Barrister Muhammed Abubakar , a former attorney general and commissioner for justice and Hon. Muhammed Awwal Jatau, a serving House of Representatives member. Barrister Abubakar is the candidate of the opposition APC, while Hon Jato is the ruling PDP candidate, propped up by Governor Yuguda as the last minute ‘dark horse’. Political analysts say that the battle is, for now, too close to call because the two opposing candidates have their mutual strengths and weaknesses, even though unconfirmed rumours have it that they both share a common godfather in Governor Yuguda. YOBE The battle for the soul of Government House Damaturu is between the incumbent Governor Ibrahim Gaidam of the ruling APC and the PDP’s former minister of police affairs, Alhaji Adamu Maina Waziri. The chances for Governor Gaidam are brighter in the sense that he is an incumbent and from the APC. The APC metamorphosed from the defunct All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) and is well rooted and a household political party in the state. Aside his incumbency factor which would obviously play a greater role in his expected victory, Gaidam’s supporters say they are feeling very comfortable with the controversy rocking the emergence of Adamu Waziri as the party’s flag bearer, because the then ANPP had always recorded victories against him each time he got the party’s ticket. TARABA Mr Darius Ishaku, a former minister for Niger-Delta ministry, will be slugging it out as PDP’s anointed candidate with Senator Aisha Jummai Alhassan, a female candidate of the opposition APC. Senator Alhassan, an astute grassroots politician and respected mobilizer got the APC ticket to be the first woman that would ever aspire to lead the state as governor. Those who know her very well say she has both the public goodwill and the financial war-chest to challenge the PDP incumbency to a stand-still. In fact, her chance is even brighter with the ongoing internal crisis heralding the ruling PDP, especially over the selection of candidates to field various elective offices. Her undoing is that she may face challenges of the people’s reservation on making a female the governor of a state in a northern state like Taraba. She also may have to contend with the issue of religious politics that is deeply rooted in Taraba – a state where only the majority Christians have ruled since its creation more than two decades ago. But analys feel that if she could key into the ongoing discontent that is rocking the PDP in the state, and play her cards well, she could pull a surprise to win the governorship. For Darius Ishaku, his strength is the backing of the Taraba kingmaker and money bag, General Theophilus Yakubu Danjuma, who, since the inception of the state, has been credited for deciding who becomes what politically in Taraba. ADAMAWA The race for the Dougirei Government House Yola ahead of the 2015 general elections promises to be interesting as it a battle between two giants, namely Mallam Nuhu Ribadu who emerged the standard flagbearer of the Peoples Democratic Party and Senator Muhammadu Umaru Jibrilla Bindow, the candidate of the APC. The race will be a tug of war between a party with the power of incumbency at its beck and call and an unassuming opposition political party that seems set to capitalise on some of the pitfalls of the ruling party to wrest power from it. The standard bearer of the PDP, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu a retired AIG in the Nigeria Police and a lawyer, who was the former anti corruption czar is a man that has cut a niche for himself especially when he superintended the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) during Obasanjo’s era. BORNO In Borno State, incumbent Governor Kashim Shettima, who emerged as the sole candidate of the party will be facing PDP’s candidate, Alhaji Gambo Lawan, a one-time chairman of Warri Refinery and founding member of PDP in Borno State. Governor Shettima has two things that may turn out to favour his chance in the coming election – sympathy from the citizenry who appreciate his conduct and kind disposition throughout the three years of Boko Haram insurgency; and his strong presence as an incumbent. Shettima also has the financial war-chest to prosecute his continuation of stay in the Government House, Maiduguri, in spite the concerns that the federal government might deploy its might to fight him. His increasing sense of generosity to groups, individuals and associations flocking around him especially in recent time also double his chances. South East Region ENUGU The PDP Enugu State gubernatorial primaries held on December 8, 2014, produced four candidates. They are Senator Ayogu Eze, Hon. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, Dr. Samuel Maduka Onyishi, and Prof. Onyeke Onyeke. Given the fact that Ugwuanyi had prior to the primaries being endorsed by the state chapter of the party as well as the state government, he is very likely to fly the party’s flag in the state at the end of the day. He hails from Enugu north senatorial district. The party had earlier zoned the PDP gubernatorial ticket to this senatorial district. The other three contenders to the governorship seat , also come from the same senatorial zone. Ugwuanyi’s strength stems from the fact that he is being sponsored by the incumbent government of Sullivan Chime. Beyond that he is said to be generous and his acceptance cuts across the three senatorial districts of the state. He may likely win the next governorship election if he finally gets the nod of the party’s national secretariat to fly the party’s flag. He is, however, said to be weak in firmness and there is ample fear that some political stakeholders may take advantage of his soft disposition to cage him if elected governor, His opponent in the APC, Barrister Okey Ezea hails from the same Nsukka senatorial zone. He is a shipping magnet and therefore has the wherewithal to prosecute his electioneering campaign. He has strength of character and very focused. EBONYI With the emergence of Ebonyi State deputy governor and former chairman of the PDP in the state, Chief Dave Umahi, as the candidate of the PDP and the election of the pioneer speaker of Ebonyi State House of Assembly and the senator that represented Ebonyi Central Senatorial zone, Chief Juluis Ali Ucha, as the candidate of the All Progressives Congress in the state, the stage is now set for the all expected battle of who occupies the Ebonyi State government house and drive the ship of the state for the next 4 years. Some political analysts have opined that the race to the government house would not be business as usual as the three major contenders all come from the different senatorial zones of the state. Aside Senator Ucha and Chief Dave Umahi, business mogul and major financier of the PDP before his defection to the Labour Party with the support of the state government apparatus, Chief Edward Nkwegu is another major contender to the race. While Senator Ucha is from the Ebonyi central zone, the same zone with Governor Martin Elechi, Chief Edward Nkwegu is from Ebonyi north zone while Chief Umahi is from Ebonyi south zone. Nevertheless, the thinking is that the ruling PDP at the federal level might use unconventional means to make Umahi governor. But if the votes were to count, he might not make it to the Government House. On his part, Senator Ucha of the APC is loved, adored and worshipped by his people, especially those from the Ezza nation. His chances are very bright. However, it would be a miracle if he makes it to the Government House through the APC – a party known to be very obscure in the state. IMO Hon. Emeka Ihedioha is the PDP governorship candidate in Imo state. He hails from Owerri senatorial zone which by the last census figure has the highest population when compared with the remaining two senatorial zones – Orlu and Okigwe. Interestingly, his supporters cut across the three senatorial zones, and they are expected to vote massively for him in the next general election with his empowerment of over 30 persons in the state with appointments as board chairmen of federal government agencies. The APC is not wholly accepted in Imo State but Governor Okorocha is a powerful force. The All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), that would have challenged PDP has a lot of litigations in court over its leadership. This has been so since the incumbent governor, Rochas Okorocha defected from APGA to APC. South South Region DELTA With the emergence of Senator Ifeanyi Okowa, a serving senator representing Delta North senatorial district as the flag bearer of the PDP, after a fierce governorship primaries held recently in Asaba, in spite of high wired political gang up and manoeuvres by the incumbent governor Dr Emmanuel Uduaghan to change the tide against the former secretary to the Delta state government, he proved his mettle as a political giant to defeat other aspirants. In the 2006 governorship primaries he was said to be coasting home to victory but was prevailed upon by Ibori’s political forces to allow the present governor (Uduaghan) to contest the governorship then. Ibori and Uduaghan are said to be cousins. Unconfirmed reports have it that the former governor of Delta State, James Ibori, who is serving a jail sentence over corruption charges in a UK prison may have given directives to his loyalists to work for the emergence of Okowa. For APC, and its candidate, Olorogun Emerhor, it is going to be a hard battle against the PDP’s Senator Ifeanyi Okowa, owing to a combination of key factors. But Olorogun is from the Urhobo, an ethnic group which unarguably controls the largest population in Delta Central. RIVERS It was no surprise that the former minister of Education, Chief Nyesom Wike emerged as the governorship candidate of the PDP in Rivers state amid huge protest from other contenders. However, Amaechi’s defection has dealt a fatal blow to the PDP in the state, with many pitching tent with the APC. Even alleged attempt, by the presidency to impeach the governor with the anti-Amaechi lawmakers, failed. It remains a herculean task for Wike to win the Rivers governorship election in 2015 owing to the fact that he hails from the same ethnic extraction with Amaechi. Peterside Dakuku is the governorship candidate of the APC in Rivers State and a trusted ally of Amaechi. Dakuku’s emergence is said to have been hailed by the minority tribe who in the last 16 years have not had the opportunity to produce a governor for the state. South West LAGOS Lagos State politics over the years is reputed for its eccentric nature, especially now that the governorship race which is hugely between the candidate of the APC, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode and the PDP’s candidate, Mr. Jimi , are both fresh contestants for the position. Ambode, apart from contesting under the platform of the ruling party, has the backing and endorsements of the main stakeholders in the Lagos project. Even before he emerged as APC candidate in the state , the Oba of Lagos, Rilwanu Akiolu, endorse Ambode’s candidature to contest the governorship seat of the state. At another public function, he stated it is the prayer of everyone that PDP should not rule the state. Agbaje’s choice as PDP candidate is not a fluke but an outcome of an independent survey carried out by both the national and state leadership of the party. He was not only widely adjudged as the best man for the job but someone charismatic enough to give the ruling party in the state a good fight. OYO Following the gubernatorial primaries of both the APC and the PDP the incumbent Oyo State governor, Senator Abiola Ajimobi and former Senate Leader, Senator Teslim Folarin have emerged as flag bearers of their respective parties for the 2015 governorship election in the state. Apart from the power of incumbency, Ajimobi would be relying so much on the achievements recorded by his administration in the last three and half years which cut across all sectors. His greatest achievement can be seen in the area of security and clean environment which have endeared the people of the state to his administration. Before the advent of his administration, hardly could resident of the state sleep with their two eyes closed. North Central KWARA In Kwara state, the incumbent Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed is the standard flagbearer of the APC while Senator Simeon Ajibola will flag the banner of the PDP in next year’s governorship election in the state. Interestingly, the two candidates are from Kwara south district. While Ahmed is of the most populous Igbomina stock, Ajibola is of Ekiti stock. The chances of Ahmed winning the election are very high. As the sitting governor, he has the natural advantage of incumbency with the machinery of government at his disposal. He definitely has the capacity to deploy the required resources apart from having a formidable structure under which he is contesting. NASARAWA In Nasarawa State, the contest between Governor Umaru Tanko Almakura of the APC and his opponent of the Peoples PDP , Dr. Yusuf Agabi is as unpredictable as it is intriguing. Governor Almakura’s strength derives primarily from the fact that he is widely popular with the electorate who have come to identify him as the change factor given the 12 wasteful years of the PDP in the state which resulted in protest votes that saw their ouster in 2011. Almakura’s accomplishments are also a huge boost to his popularity because it is on record that within the past three and a half years of his administration Nasarawa state has witnessed development surpassing all the administrations since the state was created in 1996. The failed impeachment attempt by the PDP dominated state Assembly has also aroused sympathy for Almakura who is now widely regarded as the martyr for the socio-political emancipation of the people of the state whose apathy for the PDP increases as his achievements redoubles. PLATEAU Senator Gyang Pwajok has been elected as the governorship candidate of PDP in Plateau state. He won the PDP ticket despite opposition to his aspiration over zoning issues. Having declared, however, Pwajok’s chances of winning the election may be dimmed because 12 of the 16 governorship aspirants that contested and lost the in the PDP primaries may work against his interest. On his part, APC’s governorship aspirant, Simon Lalong who was a former speaker of the Plateau State House of Assembly, will need more than the rejection of PDP stalwarts to win Plateau State which had never left the PDP since its grip since 1999. BENUE The gubernatorial flag bearer of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is Mr. Terhemen Tarzoor while the APC) is yet to elect a governorship candidate at the time of filing this report. Tarzoor, a former speaker of the Benue State House of Assembly is a consumate politician, a bridge builder, someone who is friendly and one who has the interest of the people at heart. He is a team player, very hardworking, transparent and innovative. On the side of the APC, a governorship candidate has not emerged yet but the battle is between Emmanuel Jime, a member of the House of Representatives and former minister of Trade and Investment, Samuel Ortom who just dumped the PDP. NIGER The APC candidates, Mallam Abu Sanni Bello and that of the PDP, Alhaji Umar Mohammed Nasko are both sons of top retired Military officers. The APC candidate is the son of the former Military governor of old Kano state while Umar is the son of the former Minister of Federal Capital Territory, General Mohammed Gado Nasko. Therefore, one can not easily say where the support of the top former Military leaders and officers in the state will go. The top retired Military officers are often regarded as people who determine those who would govern the state. The situation now permits that the influence of their fathers may be an intervening variables to ensure the success of their children. North West KANO Nothing could have been more strategic for the APC than the nomination of Dr. Abdullahin Umar Ganjuje as its governorship candidate. A seasoned administrator and politician, Ganguje has paid his dues in the politics of Kano State, having being in its thick and know for more than 30 years. The deputy governor is known to command the followership of the Kwankwasiya political group. As an incumbent, it is thought that the incumbency factor will also play in his favour just as the financial war chest to prosecute the elections may not be of immense challenge to him. The political structure established by Kwankwaso remains a huge asset to him. For the PDP, Salihu Sagir Takai will bank on his political and grassroots support and clout across the state. His expansive political structure is also a plus for him, just as he has maintained his structure since losing the 2011 governorship election to the incumbent Kwankwaso. KADUNA Another keen battle ground state in 2015 will be Kaduna where incumbent Governor Ramallan Yero of the PDP would be up against former minister of the federal capital territory, Mallam Nasir el- Rufai of the APC. Both sons of Kaduna hail from Zaria in Kaduna State and would be in a neck to neck race. For APC’s el-Rufai, his experience in public administration is known to be huge. This is just as his alienation with General Muhamadu Buhari remains a huge political asset to him. SOKOTO Speaker Aminu Tambuwal would be riding on the popularity crest of Governor Aliyu Wamakko of the APC and hope to win the election. Needless to state that the influence of Gen. Muhammadu Buhari will also rub off on his prospects. Also, the relative peace in the APC in Sokoto remains a worthwhile asset to him as while formidable parties in the state are at loggerheads over their primaries and relevance in the state. For the PDP in Sokoto state, Senator Abdallah Wali Might have emerged the candidate, but the contentions still within the PDP suggests that that it isn’t eureka for the PDP’s candidate. Though a known political fighter with appreciable grassroots support, he is also said to be on the elitist side. KATSINA Aminu Bello Masari of the APC hails from Funtua zone which has the largest percentage of voters in the state, so that will be a factor. His vast political experience and connections across political divides is also an asset that could swing the poll in his favour. But he is seen as not having large pocket to effectively prosecute the campaigns and prospects of other APC big wigs from the state supporting him financially is too slim. Nashuni Musa of the PDP has his biggest strength in the fact that he is government’s candidate and so will have the resources of the state at his disposal to prosecute his campaigns. Come February 2015, the picture will be clearer and we will know those who will take over on May 29.

Ogun : governorship primaries Gbade Ogunwale , Abuja The leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party ( PDP ) has cancelled the just concluded governorship primary election in Ogun State. A statement on Monday by the party ’ s National Publicity Secretary , Chief Olisa Meuh said the PDP did not authorise any governorship primary in the state. “Consequently , any such exercise held in Ogun state is hereby declared null and void and of no effect . A new date will be communicated for the primaries ”, the statement added Kaduna : Yero favoured as delegates vote Kaduna Abdulgafar Alabelewe, Kaduna The Peoples Democratic Party ( PDP ) governorship primary is on in Kaduna State, with the incumbent Governor Mukhtar Ramalan Yero and Vice President Namadi Sambo waiting to vote . The contest is between the incumbent Governor Mukhtar Ramalan Yero and Senator Zego Aziz . Three other aspirants , Lawal Samaila Yakawada, Air Commodore Ajeye, Jimmy Dung and Felix Hassan Hyat withdrew before the commencement of the primaries . Meanwhile the election process in peaceful and orderly . The incumbent Governor Mukhtar Ramalan Yero is the likely winner as some delegates vote and chant ‘sai Yero’ . CROSS RIVER : GODDY JEDY AGBA WITHDRAWS The crisis rocking the Peoples Democratic Party ( PDP ) governorship contest in Cross River State, took a turn for the worse on Monday , when a leading contender , Prince Goddy Jedy Agba opted out of the primary election. The aspirant in a statement issued in Calabar by his media consultant, Phrank Shaibu said that his withdrawal was hinged on the grounds that the delegates’ congress list was fraught with irregularities . “The party has confirmed our initial suspicion and fears that they were desperately committed to excluding Prince Goddy Jedy Agba from all democratic processes leading up the fulfillment of his gubernatorial ambition . ” “From the initial proclamation that he was not a member of the party to the cancellation of the November 1 st ad hoc delegate congress , his purported suspension from the party and now , the mutilation of the delegates list, it is doubtful that the playing field for the intended Cross River State PDP Governorship primaries would be sufficiently balanced , rather it is likely to lean in favour of the outgoing state Governor ’s purported choice of candidate. “Anyone , that understands Nigerian politics a little should know how important it is for an incumbent State Governor to see that his successor covers his tracks. However, this should not be a crucial role for the PDP ’s appointed panel in redefining how a democratic process of electing the next governor of a State in a civilized society should be . “Otherwise , if allowed, it will amount to deprivation and oppression of the electorate . In turn, this may bring about chaos and active or passive rebellion by many people. “Even when one does not feel a sense of worry for the PDP if it loses Cross River State to another Party in the governorship and general elections , it is time our political leaders learnt how to take decisions that would build our democracy than destroy it. Democracy is about more than holding elections. A real and true democracy should reflect the will of the people .” Shaibu stated. Niger : Senator Aliyu withdraws from guber race Jide Orintunsin , Minna Barely three hours to the Peoples Democratic Party’ s governorship primary in Niger State, a front line aspirant , Senator Nuhu Aliyu , has withdrawn from the race . He told journalists in Minna on Monday that his decision was borne out of lack of level playing ground for all the aspirants , accusing the state governor, Dr. Mu’ azu Babangida Aliyu and the party of imposing a candidate on the party . He said , “Despite repeated denials even when some elders led by former Governor A .A Kure met with him ( Gov . Aliyu ) , the governor is still going ahead to impose a candidate on us. It has never happened before. I have my fears for our party and our state . ” The retired deputy inspector general of police also faulted the inability of the party to give direction on who governs the state, saying it is not showing interest on the calibre and competence of who emerges as the party ’s standard bearer. Aliyu ’ s withdrawal now brings the number of aspirants to eight . He debunked claimed that he was forced to withdraw from the race , saying, “it is not true that I was boxed to submission . I used my judgment and withdrawn based on my conviction that the step taken was right .” Ogun: Tension as party sets to pick guber aspirant Ernest Nwokolo, Abeokuta Tension suffused at the Secretariat of the Peoples Democratic Party( PDP ) in Ogun State on Monday morning as the party prepares to pick a candidate that would face governor Ibikunle Amosun of the All Progressives Congress in the 2015 gubernatorial election in the state. Aside the regular armed policemen and operative of the Department of State Security Service ( DSS ) , about three dozens of fierce looking bouncers were stationed at the entrance of the party ’ s secretariat on IBB boulevard to ward off any trouble from political thugs and miscreants . No fewer than nine aspirants – including former Speaker of the House Representatives, Dimeji Bankole, Hon. Kayode Amusan , Abiodun Akinlade , Prince Gboyega Isiaka and former Deputy Governor of the state , Alhaji Rafiu Ogunleye, are vying for ticket to contest the governorship election. Other gubernatorial aspirants are – Prof. David Bamgbose, Prince Yank Lipede, Remi Bakare and Tony Ojesina. Delegates for the primary were thoroughly screened at the gate before allowed entry . About 900 of them are expected to vote for the aspirants of their choice . Rivers: Wike wins PDP ticket Rivers State – Chief Nyesom Wike , the former Minister of State for Education , h as emerged the flag bearer of the People ’ s Democratic Party ( PDP ) at the just concluded primary election. |
I love this babe.... Abeg who get her number ![]() |
The Senate Leader, Victor Ndoma- Egba, who is representing Cross River Central Senatorial District in this interview with SUNDAY ABORISADE defends criticism against the Nigerian senate and the recent police invasion of the National Assembly Some Nigerians believe that the executive has been taking the federal parliament for a ride because of the passive nature of the Senate. They cite last Thursday’s invasion of the National Assembly by the police as a case in point. What is your comment on this? Let me say that the show of force in the National Assembly by the security agencies last Thursday was quite unfortunate and totally unnecessary because the precincts of any parliament are supposed to be sacrosanct and their action was a violation of that. I will not be able to go into the substantive issues on why it happened or did not happen because I have been told that there are several court matters on those issues and being a lawyer, I will not be making any comment. But clearly, there is a problem with our democracy today because the franchise is being exercised on behalf of the people. It is as if the people no longer matter in our democracy. That is why the classical definition of democracy is government of the people by the people for the people. That does not appear to be happening right now. Power has been hijacked, processes have been hijacked, so the people count for little or nothing. I think this must begin to be a serious concern to the political class. There is need for the people to reconnect with democracy and exercise their franchise directly, otherwise, we will run into a major crisis. But is it not shameful that lawmakers now scale fences? The precincts of every parliament of the world are supposed to be sacred and I am not aware of any law that prevents you from scaling the fence to your own place. So, as long as you are not trespassing, it’s in order. Nigerians have given up on the senate, believing that the upper chamber has become a rubber stamp body for the executive. How do you feel about this? I don’t understand you. Can you cite instances? For instance, Nigerians are worried that the senate had yet to speak out on the billions of naira allegedly ferried to South Africa through the backdoor. Well, first of all, we must have some historical perspective to the senate worldwide. From history, the senate is supposed to be most sedate and that is why even constitutionally, the entry requirements are higher for senators. The senate is supposed to be a mature institution; it is designed to stabilise the polity in times of crisis. It is not to be part of the problem of the polity. If you look at the historical role of the Nigerian senate, we have consistently played that role of stabilising the polity. We should not descend into the arena. Nigerians believe that the recent showdown the senate had with the presidency was for selfish reasons. What is your reaction to this? I don’t agree with you on that. Some people say most senators have lost touch with their constituencies and that’s why they are demanding for automatic tickets? It is not a question of whether a senator is popular or not. I have talked about the people not being able to make choices in our democracy, but that certain powerful people are exercising their franchise on their behalf. So, the negotiations the senators had with the Presidency/Peoples Democratic Party leadership was aimed at cutting out those powerful people. It is a fact that quite a number of senators are still very popular with their people but some forces are saying that they don’t want them again. Are you saying that negotiating automatic tickets would solve the problem? Yes, and if you stay connected to your people. The decision of who runs on a party’s ticket is the decision of the party. So, the party can decide through whatever means they want to present as their candidates. Is it true that you are desperate to continue in the senate and because of that you have been all over the place? Let me put the issue in perspective. What constitutes the institutional memory in the senate is the aggregate memory of each member. If you have a high turnover rate of members returning, it means you also have a high turnover of loss of memory. So, it is not in anybody’s interest in every election, seeing many senators going out of parliament. But this argument of loss of institutional memory has been faulted by some people who claim that activities of the senate and that of each senator are well documented for reference for the incoming ones. Let me take mine for instance. How do you document my network? You can only see the records of the bills. Do you know how I got those bills? So the National Assembly all over the world is a peculiar institution and that is why in most presidential constitutions, there is no time limit because they know that high turnover has a negative impact on the institution. So you mean the issue of automatic tickets is not a selfish agenda of the senators? The whole idea is to sustain the memory of the institution. I am not desperate. In case you have forgotten, I had a life before Senate. I am a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, I am not desperate. I have choices. The important thing is for the people themselves to make a choice. That is the critical point. Is it the governors that should decide for the people the person who will represent them or the people themselves? A report said you sponsored an attack against a House of Representatives member, John Enoh, who is representing Etung/ Obubra Federal Constituency and vying for a senatorial seat. Is that the case? I am a man of peace and I don’t believe in violence. The report is not true. Wouldn’t your refusal to participate in the rescheduled ward congress in Cross River State affect your chances in the next National Assembly election next year? Well, I opted out of the election on my own. I am a lawyer and I have been in the bar for 36 years and 10 years as a Senior Advocate. So, going to submit to the congress when I know for a fact that there was a case in court would have been prejudicial to the proceedings and I must, at every time show respect to the institution of the judiciary. So I opted out but the judgement has now been given so the congresses can go on. It is just that the activity that started before the judgement is what I am worried about but I thought that we should have shown more respect to the judiciary and our judicial process. Are you thinking of appealing the judgement or is it in your favour? The court failed to assume jurisdiction on the matter but I will not be appealing. I accept the judgement of the court. Why has it been so difficult for tax payers to know how much senators earn? Jesus Christ !! Has a minister told you how much he or she earns? Has a permanent secretary told you how much he or she earns? Has a judge told you how much he earns? Why is it that it is the National Assembly members that should make public what they earn? Anyway, details of what we earn are in the public domain. Our salaries are fixed by the federal institution in charge of wages. It is the same body that fixes salaries for everybody. It is known to the public. But if you are asking me about how much it costs me to run my office, it is a totally different issue. Have you ever asked a minister, a permanent secretary or judicial officer how much it costs them to run their offices? What I can tell you is that in the last five or six years, the budget of the National Assembly has remained at N150bn annually. That amount covers our capital; it covers recurrent, which includes salaries and allowances of the senators, members of the House of Representatives, the bureaucracy of the entire National Assembly from the Clerk down to the cleaner. It also covers the legislative aides of members of the National Assembly. It equally covers the National Assembly Service Commission and the National Assembly Institute for Legislative Studies. N150bn is a fraction of what the country spends on fuel subsidy. It is a fraction of what the nation spends on waivers being granted to businessmen and companies. N150bn is less than three per cent of the national budget. So, why are Nigerians fixated on three per cent of the budget and they are not looking at the 97 per cent? It’s amazing that three per cent is getting 97 per cent’s attention. That is what it means. You are a SAN, which makes you an upholder of the law, can you tell us how much you earn as a senator? This is my payment details (presents a document that shows a net payment of N619, 000 per month). My salaries are fixed by the Revenue Mobilisation, Wages and Fiscal Commission. That is the guideline for everybody. How much is your constituency allowance? There is nothing like constituency allowance. There is no such thing. It exists only in the imagination of the public. Why has the senate been silent on an international embarrassment involving the Federal Government laundering money to South Africa? What is there to talk about? There is nothing to talk about because it is a security issue. We should not discuss security issues just to grandstand. There are some loopholes in the constitution which lawmakers have not thought about amending, is it because lawmakers want to be exploiting them? The process of amendment is still on course. For instance, the Economic and Financial Crime Commission will need the permission of the AGF to prosecute a lawmaker and also some lawyers have argued for and against Aminu Tambuwal stepping down after his defection. The EFCC requires the consent of the Attorney-General in every case. It is not peculiar to the cases involving the lawmakers alone. What has happened to the report of the National Conference? The national conference was an initiative of Mr. President. He set up the conference and the report was submitted to him. It is left for Mr. President to determine what he does with the report. Do you think that the state of emergency in Borno, Yobe and Adamawa states has been justified? Let me put it back to you as a Nigerian. Are you satisfied with the security situation in the North-East? Then if you are not satisfied with the security situation there, then something has to be done. Let us not play politics with security. Some people say that you have reduced the dividend of democracy and constituency projects to giving out generators, sewing machines and the likes, do you think that is the best that senators can do? Constituency projects, to my understanding, are projects that are secured in the federal budget for your constituency. People out there erroneously think that legislators are given money to go and execute constituency projects. There is no such thing. You as a lawmaker lobby and get projects that would benefit your constituents, put into the budget. That is what is called constituency projects. Any project by the president from the ministry would definitely be in somebody’s constituency. They are called constituency projects because the initiative to get them into the budget is from the legislator. We also have social responsibility programmes. For instance, I have a scholarship scheme. I have a small and medium scale business initiative scheme, I have a computer training programme. Those ones are paid for from my pocket and I can determine how I want to spend my money. I can determine to buy hairdressing items for people, it is my decision; it is my money. After initiating projects in the budget, how do you ensure that they are executed? As lawmakers, we monitor the projects from the moment they are accommodated in the budget. The procurement and execution now shift to the executive arm. They will award the contract, they would supervise and execute. The lawmaker’s role is just to monitor and make sure that the project is completed. But we heard of cases whereby the executive deliberately delayed project execution till the last quarter of the year only for them to approach lawmakers for negotiations on how the amount voted for the project could be shared without executing the project? I am hearing this for the first time. But if journalists have this evidence, they will help the society by publishing it. Do you think it is justified for the senate to approve the president’s $1bn request as a defence budget? If I think that it is not justified, I wouldn’t have voted for it to be approved. Do you think that the money would be effectively utilised for that purpose? It is for the relevant committees of the National Assembly to ensure that. How have lawmakers imparted on the people in carrying out their oversight functions? We are doing our best but it could be better. Legislative work requires experience, so the issue of high turnover also impacts on oversight. If you have experienced legislators, they will oversight well because they have done it again and again. They know how to go about it. If he is a brand new lawmaker, it will take him years for him to get used to it. So that is part of the implication of high turnover. Is the senate not bothered about the economy, the fall in Naira and crash in oil price? That is purely economics. I don’t know anything about it. Is the senate not bothered that we keep spending billions of naira annually on subsidy when we can have efficient refineries in the country? First of all, I don’t believe in subsidy. That has always been my position. Is the senate likely to approve the subsidy already put in the budget for next year? I don’t know. I can’t say. But my position is that I don’t believe in it. The senate has approved some amount of money to maintain our refineries but they are still not producing up to capacity, do you think such spending has been justified? The relevant committees of the senate would have answers to that. Why do some people say you’re arrogant even though you’re a SAN and a former Chairman of the Senate Committee on Human Rights? That I am arrogant? Can you mention one person who had ever told you that? I won’t know. Why should I be arrogant? I am not the party type. I am not the type you will find in a crowd. If you say I am arrogant because you will not find me in a night club or in a party, then so be it. I once chaired the Media and Public Affairs committee. So if anybody should tell me whether I am arrogant, it should be the media because they worked with me. So they should tell me. There was a report that you once slapped a security operative for asking you to identify yourself, do you think you acted in line with your position as a SAN? Jesus Christ !!! I don’t recall ever slapping anybody since I was born. Young man, I have my don’ts.

Democracy is turning upside down in Nigeria, and almost everyone has adopted "sidon look" posture. As you read this, the Speaker of Kebbi House of Assembly, Hon. Habib Musa Jega has been impeached. And a man, Hon. Mohammed Shalla Gwandu has been sworn-in by the clerk of the House, Shehu Usman Randali, as the new Speaker. The impeachment, which took place around 10:25pm at the House of Assembly in Birnin Kebbi was signed by 16 members out of 24 members of the House. The impeachment is coming barely two days after news came out that 17 members of House are planning to dump the PDP and join the APC. Shortly after the swearing of the new speaker, Hon Mohammed Shalla Gwandu thanked the House for the trust they had in him and promised to work harmoniously with all members and the state government. “I thank all the members for the confidence they have in me and promise to wok harmoniously with both the state government and members of the House so that our people will reap dividends of democracy,” he said. Hon Abdullahi Garba Fana representing Dandi constituency told news men that the House sat and reviewed the performance of the former leader and concluded that the impeached speaker was incompetent to continue as their leader. When asked to mention the impeachable offences committed by the ex-speaker, he said “The reason is just incompetence and members have no confidence in him any longer.” Impeachment close to mid-night? Nigeria nawao!

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has again torn at President Goodluck Jonathan, saying Nigerian democracy remained at risk due to the action of the present administration. Speaking at a book Launch in honour of the pioneer chairman of the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission, ICPC, Mustapha Akanbi, in Abuja, Mr. Obasanjo, who is the Chairman of the occasion, said the president should stop encouraging ‘verbal violence which may not physically hurt but has ways of degenerating into physical violence’. Mr. Obasanjo said the greatest indictment against any administration is to be seen trying to destroy opposition of all sorts which invariably mean destroying democracy. “Management of democracy without resorting to brute force and dictatorial tendencies must be cultivated,” the former President said. “As a leader, you must not deliberately do evil or condone evil. You should know that you will one day give account to God, you may cover up here, but before God, there is no cover up.” The former president also spoke at length on the President’s handling of the Boko Haram insurgency, corruption, the economy and youth unemployment. On insecurity, Mr. Obasanjo said Boko Haram is not out to “frustrate anyone’s political efforts” and lamented that it took Mr. Jonathan the years to fully understand the menace. On corruption, Mr. Obasanjo said, “when the head is rotten, the whole body is useless” On the economy, he said Nigeria would continue to sink deeper and that what Nigerians are told about the state of the economy “is not truly what the economy is”. “The economy is in doldrums, if not in reverse,” he said. Mr. Obasanjo’s latest attack on the President is coming seven days after he rated Mr. Jonathan’s performance as below average.

Former aviation minister, Femi Fani Kayode has insulted Governor Rotimi Amaechi in his post titled 'The Pot-bellied Creek Haramite And His Direct Threat' posted in his Facebook page. He called him houseboy, monkey and cultist. Here is how he wrote it on his Facebook page. ''If the PDP rig the election in 2015 we will not go to court and we will make the country ungovernable. We will form a parallel government and there will be anarchy''- Governor Rotimi Amaechi. It is time for the President to take off the kid gloves and put this pot-bellied little monkey in his place. Once a houseboy, always a houseboy. Once a cult member always a cult member. Once a peasant, always a peasant. If Rotimi and his Haramite friends are looking for trouble then we should give it to them in full measure. It would be a pleasure. Anytime a cockroach shows it's head it ought to be crushed. Treason is a very serious business and the brazen attempt to incite others to destroy our country, make it ungovernable and kill our people is even more serious. Have they and their Haramite army and secret military wing not killed enough people already in the last 3 years? Whichever way they wish to play it and whatever they want to do we are ready for them this time. It will not be a one way slaughter anymore. If they kill our people after they lose in 2015 there will be swift, decisive and severe consequences. Let this young man Rotimi and those that are using him prepare himself for the consequences of their madness. In 2010 they told the world that they would make Nigeria ''ungovernable'' if they lost the 2011 election and since then Nigeria has not known peace. Now they are saying it again. This time around our reaction will not be passive. The only way you can fight madness is with an equal measure of madness. The only way you can defeat a bully is by mustering the resolve to face him down. The only way you can defeat a terrorist who delights in shedding blood is to visit him with a much higher level of violence and terror. They will not kill our people and get away with it anymore. From now on it will be blood for blood. It will be an eye for an eye and it will be a tooth for a tooth. May God help us all.

This is what you get in a country where the Presidency worships militants and gives them contracts: Popular Lagos-based lawyer, Festus Keyamo, has petitioned the State Security Services and the Nigerian Police over an alleged threat to his life by an ex-militant leader popularly known as Tompolo. In the letter dated October 29, and also copied to the President and the Delta State governor, Keyamo said that Tompolo threatened to “beat him to death” for wading into a perceived fraud in the just concluded Delta State local government election. Keyamo said: “At exactly 10:13p.m. on Tuesday, October 28, 2014, I received a telephone call from one Mr. Government Ekpemupolo (alias Tompolo)…, “We have been acquaintances in the past, so I know his numbers. After reaffirming that he is Tompolo when I picked his call, he went straight to the point by informing me that he wishes to inform me that he and his ‘boys’ will kill me by beating me to death or shooting me anywhere they can find me. And that the hunt for me is on. “His exact words in pidgin English was ‘we dey look for you. Anywhere we see you, whether for Lagos or Abuja or Warri, we go beat you die or we go shoot you.’ “He said he would kill me because I have decided to take up the matter involving his blood brother, Mr. George Ekpemupolo, who was used to illegally substitute another candidate, Mr. Weyinmi Omadeli (48 hours to the election) in the Warri South-West L.G.A elections that were concluded last Saturday in Delta State.” On Tuesday, Mr. Keyamo had petitioned Emmanuel Uduaghan, the Delta State governor, over the latter’s “illegal substitution” of Mr. Omadeli, a Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, candidate for Warri South-West at the council poll with George Ekpemuopolo, Tompolo’s younger brother. “On this issue concerning Warri South-West L.G.A, I have no choice but to cry out, because your decision is capable of igniting a crisis that will affect all of us. The decision was taken whimsically and it is unjust, unfair, illegal, and ungodly,” Mr. Keyamo had written to the governor. “Consequently, it is unacceptable and will be challenged legally and politically.” Mr. Keyamo said Tompolo told him that nobody had ever challenged his authority in Delta State. “I asked Tompolo five times whether, he was, in fact, threatening my life over an open line and he said nobody in the country can do anything about it by the time I am dead,” said Mr. Keyamo. “Co-incidentally, exactly three minutes after Tompolo dropped his line, His Excellency, Governor Uduaghan called me at exactly 10.16pm, and I reported to him what just transpired between Tompolo and myself. “The Governor promised to speak with him, but that cannot be reassuring enough, and I know the remedy in law against an intended murderer is not to beg him but to ignite the criminal justice system against him, no matter how comatose that system is. ” Mr. Keyamo said that Tompolo had the “instrument to kill human beings”. “I know the subject of this petition, Tompolo, is a favoured citizen of this government, and I am not. I know Tompolo is close to those in power at the moment, whereas I am an ordinary citizen. I know Tompolo has money and influence (which are factors that are widely acknowledged to aid a suspect walk away with murder in Nigeria), but I have none of these. “In the circumstance, I am making this petition public so that when you refuse to attend to my complaint and outcry, the ordinary people of this country will, at least, know from where my death came and I will not join the long list of unresolved murders. My killer, should, at least be known.”

27 year old Reyhaney Jabbari was executed on Saturday October 25th by hanging in Iran seven years after she killed a man that she claimed had attempted to rape her. (read here). Before she was killed, Reyhaney wrote a very emotional letter to her mother, asking that her organs be donated to those who need them. See the full text of the letter after the cut... The full text of the letter was translated by the National Council of Resistance of Iran: Dear Sholeh, today I learned that it is now my turn to face Qisas (the Iranian regime's law of retribution). I am hurt as to why you did not let me know yourself that I have reached the last page of the book of my life. Don’t you think that I should know? You know how ashamed I am that you are sad. Why did you not take the chance for me to kiss your hand and that of dad? The world allowed me to live for 19 years. That ominous night it was I that should have been killed. My body would have been thrown in some corner of the city, and after a few days, the police would have taken you to the coroner’s office to identify my body and there you would also learn that I had been raped as well. The murderer would have never been found since we don’t have their wealth and their power. Then you would have continued your life suffering and ashamed, and a few years later you would have died of this suffering and that would have been that. However, with that cursed blow the story changed. My body was not thrown aside, but into the grave of Evin Prison and its solitary wards, and now the grave-like prison of Shahr-e Ray. But give in to the fate and don’t complain. You know better that death is not the end of life. You taught me that one comes to this world to gain an experience and learn a lesson and with each birth a responsibility is put on one’s shoulder. I learned that sometimes one has to fight. I do remember when you told me that the carriage man protested the man who was flogging me, but the flogger hit the lash on his head and face that ultimately led to his death. You told me that for creating a value one should persevere even if one dies. You taught us that as we go to school one should be a lady in face of the quarrels and complaints. Do you remember how much you underlined the way we behave? Your experience was incorrect. When this incident happened, my teachings did not help me. Being presented in court made me appear as a cold-blooded murderer and a ruthless criminal. I shed no tears. I did not beg. I did not cry my head off since I trusted the law. But I was charged with being indifferent in face of a crime. You see, I didn’t even kill the mosquitoes and I threw away the cockroaches by taking them by their antennas. Now I have become a premeditated murderer. My treatment of the animals was interpreted as being inclined to be a boy and the judge didn’t even trouble himself to look at the fact that at the time of the incident I had long and polished nails. How optimistic was he who expected justice from the judges! He never questioned the fact that my hands are not coarse like those of a sportswoman, especially a boxer. And this country that you planted its love in me never wanted me and no one supported me when under the blows of the interrogator I was crying out and I was hearing the most vulgar terms. When I shed the last sign of beauty from myself by shaving my hair I was rewarded: 11 days in solitary. Dear Sholeh, don’t cry for what you are hearing. On the first day that in the police office an old unmarried agent hurt me for my nails I understood that beauty is not looked for in this era. The beauty of looks, beauty of thoughts and wishes, a beautiful handwriting, beauty of the eyes and vision, and even beauty of a nice voice. My dear mother, my ideology has changed and you are not responsible for it. My words are unending and I gave it all to someone so that when I am executed without your presence and knowledge, it would be given to you. I left you much handwritten material as my heritage. However, before my death I want something from you, that you have to provide for me with all your might and in any way that you can. In fact this is the only thing I want from this world, this country and you. I know you need time for this. Therefore, I am telling you part of my will sooner. Please don’t cry and listen. I want you to go to the court and tell them my request. I cannot write such a letter from inside the prison that would be approved by the head of prison; so once again you have to suffer because of me. It is the only thing that if even you beg for it I would not become upset although I have told you many times not to beg to save me from being executed. My kind mother, dear Sholeh, the one more dear to me than my life, I don’t want to rot under the soil. I don’t want my eye or my young heart to turn into dust. Beg so that it is arranged that as soon as I am hanged my heart, kidney, eye, bones and anything that can be transplanted be taken away from my body and given to someone who needs them as a gift. I don’t want the recipient know my name, buy me a bouquet, or even pray for me. I am telling you from the bottom of my heart that I don’t want to have a grave for you to come and mourn there and suffer. I don’t want you to wear black clothing for me. Do your best to forget my difficult days. Give me to the wind to take away. The world did not love us. It did not want my fate. And now I am giving in to it and embrace the death. Because in the court of God I will charge the inspectors, I will charge inspector Shamlou, I will charge judge, and the judges of country’s Supreme Court that beat me up when I was awake and did not refrain from harassing me. In the court of the creator I will charge Dr. Farvandi, I will charge Qassem Shabani and all those that out of ignorance or with their lies wronged me and trampled on my rights and didn’t pay heed to the fact that sometimes what appears as reality is different from it. Dear soft-hearted Sholeh, in the other world it is you and me who are the accusers and others who are the accused. Let’s see what God wants. I wanted to embrace you until I die. I love you.
