That is the problem. We focus only on pleasing the eyes while the ears suffer the intrusion of discordant sound. What is pleasing to the eyes may be bitter to the tongue. All the senses must agree that a piece is beautiful...not just one sense among five. Even the soul wants a say in the appreciation of beauty. That makes it six. Poetry, in its true form, is beautiful to all the senses.

the beauty in the eyes of the beholder was never about the eyes...it's a metaphor same time some sort of irony for it has always mean the heart! the seat of 'intelligence' for all the senses. the beholder's eye apparently represents him as a whole...the perspective with which we we see things... being so reflective and deflective makes its so that we as humans hardly ever agree on one thing. a word smith you say? won't you agree all poets are slayers of words?? in a way even the rapper is a poet...after all music brings poetry to life...I mean why do we sing poems like songs when really they are mere lines of euphoric parables...
