French naval shipbuilder DCNS transferred the FREMM frigate Tahya Misr (FFG-1001, ex- Normandie [D651]) to the Egyptian Navy on 24 June; a delivery that marks a major milestone towards a strategic partnership between France and Egypt. The flag ceremony took place at the company's shipyard in Lorient, Britanny, in the presence of French defence minister Jean-Yves Le Drian, his Egyptian counterpart General Sedki Sobhy, the two navies' chiefs of staff (Admiral Osama Rabie for Egypt and Admiral Bernard Rogel for France), and Hervé Guillou, chairman and CEO of DCNS. During his speech Le Drian indicated the delivery was the first major milestone towards a strategic partnership between France and Egypt and better interoperability between the two naval forces. "A high-ranking French naval officer will be posted to the Egyptian Navy headquarters in Alexandria to ensure optimal use of the frigate and positive customer [feedback]," said the French minister. France's Direction Générale pour l'Armement (DGA) defence procurement agency will also post an attaché at the French embassy in Cairo to support Egypt and facilitate military- related exchanges. DCNS not only sold a ship but also a five- year through-life support contract, which includes on-the-job training and technical support. "A third of DCNS's activities currently involve the provision of support and services and we want to increase this business," Nathalie Smirnov, head of support and services with DCNS, told IHS Jane's . More than 3,900 people are working in this division and a task force of 40 technicians and engineers are currently seconded to the Royal Moroccan Navy to assist with the first maintenance period of FREMM vessel Mohammad VI . Over the five years of its support deal Tahya Misr will undergo nine short maintenance periods (of six weeks each, the first one being already set for end of this year) and a three-month-long overhaul. DCNS has a permanent force of five technicians in Alexandria, which will be augmented by 40 other specialists during the maintenance periods. The operational training will be conducted by DCI-NAVFCO. The day after the flag ceremony, Tahya Misr sailed out to sea for a two-day training session with DCI's instructors. Two other sessions will take place within the next three weeks, each time with two to four days at sea. The ship is expected to sail to Brest after 14 July (Bastille Day) to load ammunition. Before the ship sails back to Egypt, it will take part in a short firing exercise, where 20 or so 76 mm shells will be fired at surface targets. When Tahya Misr sails home in the second half of July, a nine-day transit at an average speed of 15-16 kt, the Egyptian crew will be fully capable of manoeuvring the ship and defending it against low-level threats. The second part of the operational training will take place between August and October next year, after which Tahya Misr and its crew should reach full operational capacity. www.janes.com/article/52534/egypt-receives-its-first-fremm-frigate

A baby girl born to mainland Chinese parents was revealed to be born "pregnant" with twins at a Hong Kong hospital. The baby girl born at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Kowloon, Hong Kong last year was initially believed to have two tumours but doctors later discovered the tumours were in fact twin foetuses. The foetuses were found to be at 8 to 10 weeks of gestation. Each foetus had four limbs, a spine, rib cage, intestines, anus and an umbilical cord connected to a single placenta-like mass. One of the foetuses weighed 14.2 grams and the other, 9.3 grams. Doctors had to perform a surgery on the baby girl at three weeks to remove the foetuses. The girl was discharged from the hospital eight days following the surgery. The condition was revealed to be an abnormality called the 'fetus in fetu' condition. 'Fetus in fetu' affects 1 in 500,000 births globally and a total of 200 cases have so far been reported in literature. The birth defect, reported first in the Hong Kong Medical Journal, is believed to be linked to the mother having multiple abortions though more evidence is required to confirm the theory. "It was almost impossible to detect during the prenatal check-up, as the embryo inside the baby was too small," said Dr. Yu Kai-man, a specialist in obstetrics and gyneacology. "Since it is impossible for the little girl to have conceived the pregnancy on her own, the fertilization of the twin fetuses, of course, belongs to her parents, which has gone to the wrong place." While the exact factors leading to the 'fetus in fetu' abnormality remain unknown, the World Health Organisation has classified the condition a variant of mature teratoma, a type of cancer. www.ibtimes.co.uk/hong-kong-baby-born-pregnant-twins-1487270 |

biggirloya2: I have always been a big girl. Bigger than my age that is. I have a very beautiful body and personality but a bit too big for my age. I have always been like this. Now i am 26 but you would swear i am 29 or more. Now i have always attracted older men or bad guys and now i finally thought i had met the one. He is turning 25 in August and i am ( for once in my life) the older one in a relationship. I sometimes hate him coz i get the feeling that because i am fat he wants to treat me like a sugar mommy. but i am only 1 year older than him.I am tired of him hurting me. I get the feeling that he has a younger skinnier lover and me i am just the for sex and do him favours. The dude has never invited me to his home or to meet his people but he knows my home and people like hell. When i dump him he declares his undying love for me but when i decide to stay in the relationship he never has time for me and makes me feel as if he is doing me a favor by spending time with me. Will i ever feel good about myself, will i ever be happy like other people, or am i going to be his dirty secret forever? i am scared of ending things compeletly coz i am a coward and i cant stand to one day see him with a better girl coz i am just a fat worthless ugly girl who looks older than she is.Do you feel my pain?i av a frnd who z rili big n she z so proud. She gets all d attention anywhere she goes n evrybdy wnt to b around her. Secondly, der z no way a smbdy will luv u if u dnt luv urself - how u feel abt urself inside def shows on d outside widout u knwin n determinds who z attracted to u. Start luvin urselv sweedy, u only live once. |

Why do women go into menopause? “The ovaries basically shut down,” explains West Penn Hospital OBGYN Dr. Emily Lebovitz. “Why exactly that occurs we don’t know.” Around age 50, women end their reproductive years — an event called menopause. Hormones change, menstrual cycles stop, and natural childbearing is no longer a possibility. Menopause could be nature’s way of matching motherhood to younger bodies. “It’s certainly healthier for them to have children in their 20s, 30s, 40s, and then it becomes much more difficult,” Dr. Lebovitz continues. But a Canadian researcher says it’s because of men, and because of competition. Using computer modeling, he found competition among men of any age for younger mates left older females with less chance of reproducing. He says the result is that genes favoring menopause got passed down through the generations, so that now it’s a normal part of the female genetic blueprint. But there are problems with this theory. “That’s an assumption that they made when they started their computer model, that men do like younger mates, and I don’t think you can make that assumption,” says Dr. Lebovitz. What’s more, if menopause is genetically determined and influenced by the environment, you would expect that some women would not go through menopause, or with increased life expectancy, the length of fertility might proportionally lengthen. But that hasn’t been the case. “We haven’t seen a change in the age of menopause in general. It’s somewhat preposterous to assume this has to do with men’s choices,” Dr. Lebovitz says. “Computer studies are difficult. Certainly population based studies can have more validity.” |
