1. OPPO Mobile In just short seven months since its entry in the Nigerian mobile market, OPPO has generated plenty of excitement in the marketplace. The brand’s tremendous success with its flagship device, the OPPO F11Pro, has catapulted it to being one of the leading smartphone brands available. The OPPO F11Pro has been summarily described as the pocket-sized professional camera. From the beautiful and well thought out aesthetics of the F11 Pro to its very big battery, its seamless use made possible by the hyper boost and its ability to enable you to multitask easily, the F11Pro provides way more to the Nigerian smartphone user than any other phone in the market. The best feature yet of the F11Pro is its amazing camera. Combining a 48+5MP dual rear camera setup, large image sensor, large aperture and AI image processing, the F11Pro makes capturing photos with professional results absolutely easy. OPPO mobile, being a brand for young people has immersed itself in partnering and sponsoring youth-centric activities. OPPO mobile was a regional sponsor for the just concluded African Cup of Nations, 2019. During the CAF season, not only did OPPO mobile tirelessly support the Super Eagles, they also made sure that it was an amazing time for the fans as well. Fans were treated to wonderful viewing times with OPPO brand influencers and other OPPO mobile officials at luxurious places within Lagos. Staying true to their love for all things youthful, OPPO mobile is also one of the sponsors for the ongoing Big Brother Naija “Pepper Dem” Season 4 edition. They have presently gifted the winners of their task N2 million in gifts and cash, they have also given every evicted housemate an OPPO F11Pro. The fans of the show have also been carried along as OPPO has given out awesome prizes in numerous giveaway promos on their social media platforms. Globally, OPPO has also climbed up a step in the world smartphone ranking to become the 4th largest smartphone company in the world. We dare say that 2019 has definitely been the OPPO year! 2. Huawei Huawei has been in the Nigerian smartphone market for about 5 years now. Entering with entry-level phones, feature phones, QWERTY phones, and Android smartphones, they have had quite a long-standing presence in Nigeria. Huawei’s major selling point was that they produced smartphones considered to be cheap and hence affordable to the general public. They, however, were not generally considered to be an innovative brand until this year. The brand perception of Huawei received a tremendous boost with the introduction of the Y-series. Chinese smartphone maker, Huawei expanded its Y series with the introduction of the Huawei Y6 Pro, Huawei Y7 and Huawei Y9. The new Y series smartphones come with AI camera, dewdrop displays and larger battery capacity. With optimal pricing and good products, Huawei has been able to finally take a huge chunk of the share of voice in the Nigerian smartphone industry with these devices. Taking a clue from the OPPO playbook, the Huawei Y9 also has a rising and retractable front camera, which they prefer to call the “pop-up camera”. The rising camera feature was first seen in the OPPO F11Pro which was introduced into the market months before. Following the success of the OPPO F11Pro, it is safe to say that Huawei may have gotten the right idea from OPPO. Huawei had also been in the global news for the tussle and loss of access to google products which includes Gmail, the google play store and a host of others. This hasn’t affected the Chinese smartphone makers, as they still maintain their position in the world ranking. 3. Nokia The number 3 slot is truly a battle for me, as the Nigerian smartphone industry has been churning out great products, each trying to outdo competitors and even their own previous products. In 2007, Nokia held 50% market share in mobile phone handsets. By 2013, Nokia's handset market share decreased to less than 5%. At that time, the company also faced the near-certain likelihood of bankruptcy. The Nokia story has had a turbulent time, and the Nigerian smartphone industry has borne witness to it. However, the tide seems to be taking a turn for the better. With the introduction of Andriod operated Nokia smartphones, Nokia has been able to successfully rebrand and re-invent itself. The Nokia 9 PureView is Nokia's most recent flagship phone, and it comes with cutting-edge features to match. In particular, it comes with one important feature (or five depending on how you count it) in the form of its five-sensor rear camera, which is the most we've seen in a smartphone. Although we cannot categorically call the new Nokia Android phones powerful smartphones even with the five-sensor rear camera, and it might not be able to adequately compete with other smartphones with lesser rear camera sensors, the pricing of the new Nokia smartphones gives these smartphones an edge in the Nigerian smartphone market. https://thepunditng.com/top-3-smartphone-brands-making-waves-in-2019/

This Phone is Simple, Sleek Yet Affordable About two weeks ago, global smartphone brand, OPPO Mobile introduced two new phone models (A1k and A5s) into the Nigerian market with an aim to cater to a segment of Nigerian users that are trendy and practical. The Technext team has had an early interaction with one of the models, the A1k device, and here is what we think: The OPPO A1K mobile screen has a 6.1-inch LCD waterdrop (15.49 cm) screen display size with a 19.5:9 aspect ratio and a resolution of 1560×720 pixels. Compare to the total phone size, that screen size amounts to 87.43% screen-to-body ratio. This implies that a significant portion (9/10) of the front space has been dedicated to your viewing pleasure and use. The OPPO A1k comes in two options: Black and Red (we have the red). The back of the phone is a metallic texture design and the phone comes with a transparent pouch that allows you and your friends to savour the beauty even as it is protected. It runs on Android v9.0 (Pie) operating system coupled with Oppo’s intuitive operation system, the ColorOS 6.0. The graphics look sleek and the navigation, in our experience, was smooth. This points to the power of the processor. We learned that the device is powered by an Octa-core with 2 GHz as well as a Cortex A53 processor. And, it has a Smart Assistant function that allows you access the important information in the form of a card on the home screen. And, it is quite a machine. It comes with a 2GB RAM and 32GB ROM with the option to expand the memory Up to 256GB (memory card). It comes with an unremovable battery of 4000 mAh. We learned that this capacity can allow an active use length of up to 17 hours. We were on active review for over 5 hours and the battery actually proved its worth! The only possible con here is that you cannot remove the A1k battery. The front camera is 5 mega-pixels with an F2.0 aperture capacity. This means that it gets a detailed capture at close range, allows for a blurry background and good for a low light capture as well. The rear camera is 8 mega-pixels. It has a CMOS image sensor that can support a 3264 x 2448 resolution. Our Verdict: Overall, at N44,900, we think the Oppo A1k is a great buy if you want a good phone without breaking the bank. Two Oyo State Monarchs claim to help Politicians win elections with Juju High Chief Arogundade Sunday Alade and Chief Sumonu Aromodede of Ogbomosho Land, Oyo State made serious allegation against politicians and public office holders who consulted them for spiritual charms to enable them win electoral positions and juicy public offices but never returned to make good their promises after securing their positions. Our correspondent also gathered that these high chiefs have strong affiliates with politicians in South-west, South-East, North East and North Central parts of Nigeria and they work hand in hand to perpetrate evil in a bid to gain power to amass wealth unlawfully. Chief Arogundade Sunday Alade made a claim against a Politian (name withheld) who currently holds a political office at the national level that he is being owed a fee being amount payable for charms and thugs supplied during the just concluded election. He claimed that charms used were made from blood and parts of dead human beings and he is very sure of the potency of his charms. He reiterated that this isn’t the only situation where he would assist to gain access to holding public offices, win contracts and also to attain promotion but after gaining power, same people will deny association with traditional belief and powers that brought them favour. He mentioned that traditional beliefs and practices of African people include various ethnic religions. These traditions are oral rather than scriptural. This includes belief in a supreme creator, belief in spirits, veneration of the dead, use of magic and traditional African medicine. The role of humanity is generally seen as one of harmonizing nature with the supernatural. He quoted that according to Lugira, "it is the only religion that can claim to have originated in Africa. Other religions found in Africa have their origins in other parts of the world." Followers of traditional African religions pray to various spirits as well as to their ancestors. These secondary spirits serve as intermediaries between humans and the primary God, also referred to as the Supreme Deity. Most African societies believe in a single Supreme being (Chukwu, Nyame, Olodumare, Ngai, Roog, etc. Some recognize a dual God and Goddess such as Mawu-Lis. In Nigeria the majority of the populations are adherents of Christianity or Islam, Nigerian people often combine the practice of their traditional belief with the practice of Abrahamic religions. The two Abrahamic religions are widespread across Africa, though mostly concentrated in different areas. They have replaced indigenous African religions, but are often adapted to African cultural contexts and belief systems. High Chief Arogundade Sunday Alade and Chief Sumonu Aromodede of Ogbomosho Land, Oyo State, Nigeria are of the opinion that traditionalism should be passed to the oncoming generation. Chief Alade in his words 'I have seen many people in Christian and Muslim faiths, seeking protection and help from these idols and hereafter deny their association and involvement after accomplishing their mission. Many politicians have visited us and we have assisted them to occupy their desired seats. Chief Arogundade S. alade & Chief Sumonu Aromodede recommend that active practice of African religious will assist in curbing the present high rate of corruption in the nation by making public office holders swear with these gods who will give immediate punishment to offenders. It was gathered that while Chief Aromodede initiate his wards and relations to the practice of idols and occultism at early stage of their lives because it is a taboo for any member of their family not to practice occultism. It was also gathered that Chief Arogundade Alade forcefully initiates members of his family with a view to appease the gods. They claim that association with tradition averts premature death and enables one to succeed in his/her life endeavors. https://thepunditng.com/two-oyo-state-monarchs-claim-to-help-politicians-win-elections-with-juju/ |

An Interest group, Integrity Leadership Organisation has carpeted the Director, Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC), Prof Isaq Akintola, over what it described as his unwarranted criticism of the recent appointments made by Ekiti State Governor, Dr Kayode Fayemi. Prof Akinola had in a statement earlier in the week faulted the Ekiti State government for appointing more Christians than Muslims in various positions in the government. But the ILO in a statement signed by its National Coordinator, Mr Lekan Oyediran and made available to journalists on Wednesday, said Prof Akinola’s criticism was misplaced, stressing that competence and involvement in politics and community development are of greater consideration in appointment than the issue of religion. The group urged Prof Isaq Akinola not to create religious crisis in Ekiti State through his unguarded outbursts, adding that Ekiti are not known to differentiate between religions as the adherents of all religions in the state see themselves as brothers. This, he said, had accounted for the religious harmony that the state enjoys. The group said that someone of Prof Akinola’s calibre ought to know that government’s appointments are not based on religion or ethnicity, but on the value that the appointee can add. The group said: “It is disturbing to hear the MURIC leader, Prof Isaq Akinola make such careless statement, giving the impression that the Ekiti State Governor deliberately side lined Muslims in the appointments made so far. “This is quite misleading. The fact is that the Fayemi administration had in the last four months appointed both Christians and Muslims into positions, including a former President of the Supreme Council of Islamic Affairs. “We know and believe the likes of Prof Akinola should know too that appointments into offices are not based on religious affiliation but on competence and involvement in politics and community development. “The Muslim population in Ekiti State is about five per cent and the present administration has been fair in its dealings with the Muslim community, especially in the area of appointment. “There is no golden rule that says Muslims should occupy a particular position in government. “Ekitis live and work together in harmony and it is unfortunate that the likes of Prof Akintola, through their dubious agenda setting, are trying to create religious crisis by coming up with spurious allegation of marginalisation where it does not exist. “We urge Christians and Muslims in the state to shun any group or individual who are out to surreptitiously sow seed of discord. “It is high time we continued to support an administration that has demonstrated clearly its commitment to the all- round development of the state and its citizens through the promotion of core values and purposeful leadership.” The Group added. Signed: Lekan Oyediran National Coordinator, Integrity Leadership Organisation. |
...Say it’s false, baseless, mischievous Three political parties in Enugu State have denied the allegation by the factional chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state, Mr. Ben Nwoye and Director-General of Senator Ayogu Eze campaign organization, Hon. KGB Oguakwa of an alleged plan by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to hand over electoral materials to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), ahead of March 9 governorship and House of Assembly elections. Reacting to the allegation, which was published in a national daily, the state chairman of the PDP, Hon. Augustine Nnamani stated: “It is shameful and an insult on the people of Enugu State that a party (APC) whose ambition is clearly in disarray and which has not been campaigning in the State could come out to make such outlandish and regrettable allegation”. The PDP chairman added that “APC leadership had openly boasted that it would use “federal might” to win the gubernatorial elections in Enugu State”, stressing that “it is curious that the same party has now turned round to shamelessly and falsely accuse federal institutions of complicity in a phantom conspiracy with the PDP to deny it victory in the upcoming polls”. In a related development, the state chapter of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) and its Governorship Candidate, Chief Hon. Emma Nwankpa, expressed “utter dismay over the spurious and baseless media report”, stressing that “as one of the major stakeholders who have been deeply committed and involved in all the processes of the elections, APGA Enugu State chapter, wishes to state categorically that the allegation is false, baseless and mischievous”. According to APGA, “we wish to state that our agents actively participated in the inspection and distribution of all the electoral materials at the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Enugu”, and “they duly and formally reported to our party that the exercise was transparent and that no foul play was encountered as mischievously alleged by the APC”. The party, therefore, advised “the APC and its members not to undermine the peaceful political atmosphere in Enugu State and the genuine efforts by INEC and the security agencies to prosecute transparent, free, fair and credible governorship and state assembly elections on Saturday”. On its part, the Social Democratic Party (SDP) faulted the allegation by APC, stating that it was a failed attempt by the party to sway sentiments in the face of imminent defeat at the polls. The party’s chairman, Hon. John Nwobodo, further called on the Nigerian public to ignore the “needless distraction”. Further reacting, the PDP Chairman said:”Ordinarily, we would have ignored these spurious claims, more so, when credible rebuttals had been made by both INEC and the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN). However, we feel obliged to make this clarification to keep the records straight and to alert our people to the notoriety which the APC has acquired in spreading lies and unfounded rumours, ostensibly to cover up for their dismal performances in Enugu State during the last presidential and National Assembly elections which were adjudged by INEC-accredited observers as being free, fair, peaceful, credible and transparent. "For a party whose governorship candidate could not win his booth in the last presidential elections, it smacks of utter mischief that APC could make such claims which, at best, were as defeatist as they were childish". Hon. Nnamani equally urged “the good people of Enugu State and the general public to discountenance this mischievous antic of a drowning party (APC)”, and enjoined the electorate to come out en masse to exercise their franchise during the elections. http://dailypost.ng/2019/03/07/enugu-polls-apc-allegation-inec-false-baseless-mischievous-apga-sdp-pdp/
