More facts have emerged on why the five aggrieved governors on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party have yet to agree on the presidential candidate they will support having fallen out with the candidate of their party, Atiku Abubakar. Saturday PUNCH learnt that the governors, Nyesom Wike of Rivers State, who is the leader of the team; Samuel Ortom of Benue State, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State, Okezie Ikpeazu of Abia State and Seyi Makinde of Oyo State, could not agree on a particular candidate during their visit to the United Kingdom during the week. There have been indications that the G-5 and its expanded Integrity Group, comprising some former governors and party bigwigs, might support one of Atiku; the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, and that of the Labour Party, Mr Peter Obi. However, with about 55 days to the presidential election, which is scheduled for February 25, many Nigerians have anticipated that the London meeting by the G-5 governors would eventually produce their preferred candidate. But indications emerged that they were unable to take a unanimous position on who to support in the election. Sources close to the meeting told one of our correspondents that due to their respective ambitions and interests, the aggrieved governors had yet to agree on who to support. While Makinde is seeking re-election as governor on the PDP platform, Ortom, Ugwuanyi and Ikpeazu, who will finish their second term on May 29, 2023, are all contesting senatorial seats in their respective districts. Even though Wike, the most outspoken among them, is not contesting any position in the forthcoming elections, the PDP governorship candidate is his preferred choice and the governor has been campaigning for him. Sources close to the group said after their reported meeting with Tinubu in London, the governors decided not to openly campaign for the presidential candidate of the party or any other candidate so as not to jeopardise their chances in the election. One of the sources, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorised to speak on the issue, said the governors were sharply divided over the candidates. The source said, “Many people know that former President Olusegun Obasanjo sold the candidacy of Peter Obi to them. He wants the governors to back the former Anambra State governor. Some initially embraced the former President’s suggestion out of respect for him. “However, it was clear that Obi might not win the election, so the reality of this dawned on the governors and they discussed it, but they did not take a position. “You also know that the presidential candidate of the APC sent emissaries to the governors before he personally met them. He had negotiated with them, especially Wike. But the other governors are afraid that such a negotiation could work against them in their states. “The APC and its presidential candidate are not very popular in the South-East. In fact, the people of the zone are angry with some comments said to have been made by the vice-presidential candidate of the APC (Kashim Shettima) sometime ago. This was why the people walked out on him in Imo State when members of the party went there for consultation.” It was learnt that knowing the zone was mainly controlled by the PDP, governors from the region might find it difficult to campaign for the APC without working against themselves. Another source told one of our correspondents, “The South-East generally is for the PDP, though the Labour Party through Obi is making inroads into the place. Given the fear of the people and their personal ambitions, they are likely going to back Atiku and the PDP. “Also, there is no governor who will not want to have a successor. They will not want to confuse their supporters with conflicting directives and therefore commit political suicide.” The source added that the positions of Ortom and Makinde were almost similar. The source explained, “For example, in Benue, the governor has never hidden his anger against the APC. Remember the party refused to give him a second term ticket, but the PDP accommodated him. He had fought with almost all the power brokers in the opposition. “His preferred candidate is also not popular unlike the APC candidate. If he confuses the voters, he and his candidate will lose in the election. “Makinde has many enemies within the PDP. The likes of Bisi Olopoeyan and Mulikat Akande-Adeola and their supporters are still angry with the way the governor treated them during the last primaries and others. Yet, his enemies are increasing. “Don’t forget, the APC governorship candidate in Oyo State, Senator Teslim Folarin, and that of the Accord Party, Bayo Adelabu, are waiting for Makinde to make a mistake so that they can take advantage of it. They are even talking about forming a coalition against Makinde, so it’s clear that the governors have to survive first.” However, it was gathered that one of the governors from the South-East (name withheld) visited Atiku a few days ago and assured him of his loyalty. A source privy to the visit said, “The governor went to Abuja. He told the former VP that he would work for him and the PDP, saying he was following Wike because of their friendship and what he had benefited from him. He also said he would never work for any other candidate or political party apart from the PDP and Atiku.” Wike denies endorsement Meanwhile, Wike has denied reports that the G-5 governors have endorsed any presidential candidate. He spoke at the Eneka Road roundabout during the inauguration of the Eneka-Igbo Etche Road project, shortly after arriving from the UK on Friday. He also denied having any interview with the BBC as alleged by some reports, noting that the PDP presidential campaign council claimed to have moved on but was always querying the moves made by the group. He stated, “I travelled overseas on the 26th (of December) having worked so hard. Some people say we have moved on, yet you tell Nigerians you are not bothered by the G-5. They said I had a conversation with the BBC, where is the picture or the video? “The truth is you don’t need to speculate; when I want to do something, I do it. There is no trouble, what we have is an introduction to trouble. “Leave me alone, leave Seyi Makinde alone, leave Ikpeazu alone, leave Ifeanyi alone. My dear people, I just want to tell you that whatever decision I will take I will let you know, and I cannot take any decision without taking any advice from you. “I am not the one who will go and see somebody and I will hide, hide from who? Who is that person that will threaten me? You say you will sack me, go ahead. I am not worried; you that is sacking you are worried; me that will be sacked am I worried? Try it and see how you will survive it.” He said he stood by his word when he said he would remain a party man and support whoever emerged from the presidential primary, but that Atiku should also fulfil his promise that he would make sure the same zone did not produce the candidate and the national chairman of the party. Obasanjo, Atiku tenure The governor also alleged that Atiku, as the vice-president, made Obasanjo kneel before him so that he could have a second term in the run-up to the 2003 election. Wike stated, “You forget history. In 2002 and 2003, when President Olusegun Obasanjo wanted to run for a second term, a whole President knelt down before his deputy and said, ‘My vice, please allow me to run. You know one of the conditions he (Atiku) gave him? That Tony Anenih must be sacked as minister of works and that he must not be in the presidential campaign council. Obasanjo obliged. “This one, we are not even giving such conditions; we are saying give us the national chairman and you say, ‘No, we will not listen to you people, don’t give us conditions’. This is something touching on the foundation of the unity of the country.” He also promised to remain in the party, adding, “I have never left the PDP since 1998; I will never. Even when they came to destroy the PDP, I remained to serve the PDP. So how can this kind of character come and tell me that I should not destroy the PDP; the PDP he destroyed?” Wike attacks Secondus Meanwhile, Wike has attacked the former National Chairman of the PDP, Prince Uche Secondus. He said Secondus was not his benefactor, rather he is Secondus’ benefactor. Reacting to Saturday PUNCH’s report where Secondus said no one could impose a presidential candidate on the people of the state, Wike said he never said he would impose a candidate on the people. “All I said was that I would tell Rivers people who I want to support. It is then left for Rivers people to decide whether they will follow me or not.” He added, “He then came up provoked and said I am fighting my benefactors and that I will soon leave office. Please Secondus, you couldn’t have been my benefactor, or those following you couldn’t have been my benefactors. First of all, I won as council chairman in 1998/1999, you did not support me. Second tenure, you wanted to upturn my ticket, you couldn’t.” “So, you can’t be my benefactor; you are not the one who made me governor; for you to make me governor, you must be the one that sponsored the election, is it not? So, you are deceiving Nigerians, Rather, I should be your benefactor,” Wike added. The governor said he supported Secondus to become the national chairman despite the odds against him, noting that when he tried to impose his nephew or cousin, they had to “kick him out.” Okowa replies G-5 The governor of Delta State and Atiku’s running mate, Ifeanyi Okowa, on Friday said God would determine Nigeria’s next President and not the action of the G-5 governors. Okowa spoke in Aboh when he led the Delta PDP campaign train to the Ndokwa East and Ndokwa West local government areas of the state. He expressed confidence that the five governors would put the past behind them and work for the victory of the PDP in the 2023 elections. Okowa said, “God has said it that we, the PDP, will win this election. Many things may be happening now and people may be asking what about the G-5 governors. These governors are our brothers; everybody is important. But what God has said will happen, nobody can change it. “Even if some of them decide to support the APC, some will still remain with us because there will be division among them. The real truth is that I have strong political eyes and I have observed that no matter what they do, the PDP will win the forthcoming election by the grace of God. “It is only the power of God that can help us to win. No matter what the G-5 say, we will win.” Speaking on the two other leading candidates, Okowa said, “We all know that the candidate of the APC is not good enough to be our president. Also we know that the Labour Party is not going anywhere and we need to sweet-talk the party supporters not to waste their votes. “Those wishing to vote for the Labour Party are only indirectly helping the APC and trying to reduce the votes of the PDP. So, please go and plead with the Labour Party supporters to return to the PDP and join hands with us to change Nigeria for better.” Atiku’s PH rally The PDP Campaign Management Committee in Rivers State has slated January 16 for its presidential campaign in the state. The party applied to use the Port Harcourt Polo Club for rallying support for Atiku. In a letter dated December 10 to the President of the Polo Club, Chukwudi Dimkpa, the Director, State Campaign Management Committee, Dr Abiye Sekibo, said the party planned to use the facility for its mega rally. Sekibo also promised that the party would adhere to “all the necessary requirements by the club.” “We hope that our application will be accorded the needed urgent attention and approval to enable us to finalise with our preparations towards holding a peaceful, smooth and successful presidential campaign rally in Rivers State,” he added. https://punchng.com/pdp-g-5-govs-divided-interests-stall-tinubu-obis-adoption/ |

Ogun State League of Imams and Alfas asked all female Muslim students in the state to begin wearing hijab in public schools. The development comes after its December meeting in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital. The state’s Islamic leaders said the declaration for the use of the hijab in public schools in the state came after a recent meeting with the state government about the need for their female children to wear hijabs to complement their school uniforms. The league said in a statement signed by its Secretary General, Sheikh Tajudeen Adewunmi, on Tuesday that the use of hijab will begin on January 9, 2023, when students return for their second term. The league also said only “desiring and willing female Muslim students could wear a white-coloured shoulder-length cape Hijab as they resume for the second term of the 2022-2023 academic session on Monday, January 9, 2023, and henceforth without any fear of molestation or punishment.” The statement read in part, “At the end of our December 2022 general meeting, where many issues bothering the welfare of the Ummah were discussed, we resolved to express the opinion of the Muslim community (the Ummah) in the state as it concerns the following issues: “Many female Muslim students in Nigeria, particularly in Ogun State, have continued to feature unnecessarily in many protracted cases of infringements on their rights in their quest to practise their religion, particularly in relation to the use of Hijab in schools. “However, all doubts or controversies on the matter have been put to rest by the pronouncement of the honourable justices of the Supreme Court of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, which reaffirmed the rights of Muslim students in Nigerian schools to use Hijab as they so wished. “It should also be noted that many agencies of the Ogun State government have consistently stated that there is no law that prohibits female Muslim students from wearing Hijab, despite the fact that Muslim students who wear Hijab have always been beaten, embarrassed, or humiliated in a variety of ways over the years.” The league, however, pleaded with the state government to warn teachers and school heads to desist from depriving Muslim female students of their human rights and accept the approval of the use of hijab in schools. The statement further read, “We request the state government warn overzealous and religiously intolerant individuals among school heads and teachers, as well as others who might want to take laws into their own hands by preventing Muslim students who are willing to express their fundamental human right. “The Muslim Community had noted the previous intolerance and disdain from non-Muslim teachers and heads of schools toward Muslim students on this matter, which include (but are not limited to) molestation, the affliction of physical injury, and many other forms of harassment.” The religious leaders also frowned at the dearth of Islamic Religious Knowledge teachers in public schools in the state. “Apart from the fact that Muslim students were deprived of the opportunity to learn Islamic Studies in many schools in the state, it is more unfortunate, disheartening, and in fact illegal (in the spirit and intent of the aforementioned provision of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria) that Muslim students in some government-owned schools in Ogun State are being compelled to offer Christian Religious Knowledge as a subject in the schools. “We use this opportunity to call on the state government and, in particular, the Honourable State Commissioner of Education, Science, and Technology to, as a matter of urgency, correct the anomaly through the recruitment and deployment of Islamic Studies teachers to schools across the state to teach the subject.” The Commissioner for Education, Science, and Technology in the state, Prof. Abayomi Arigbabu, could not be reached as of the time of filing this report to confirm the statement Several calls made to his phone lines did not go through, and a text message sent to his line had not been responded to as of the time of filing this report. https://punchng.com/use-hijab-upon-resumption-ogun-clerics-tell-students/ |

Instead apc should be apologising to nigerians, they are rather campaigning. Unfortunately, Tinubu may end up winning with labour party, pdp and nnpp all dragging votes from one another. |

Residents groan, accuse Police, LASTMA, VIO of aggravating the situation By Evelyn Usman Lagos State, acclaimed to be the largest city in Nigeria and the second most populous city in Africa, is at present overwhelmed by gridlock, as it’s residents go through harrowing experiences daily, to get to their respective work and business places. Though traffic congestion has been a common phenomenon in the state, it has assumed a worsening dimension. The situation has made the preparation for Christmas burdensome for Christian faithful and non-Christians. Lagos residents are in pain. There’s the gridlock, menace of tankers and trucks, activities of hoodlums now approved by the state, traffic robbery, deteriorating roads etc. Also Read Aftermath of insecurity, soaring inflation: It’s bleak, drab Christmas The state government has duly been celebrating some mega projects it has done or plans to do but the little things that make life seem good if not comfortable have been neglected and the pains are getting very severe. From the highbrow areas on the Island to the mainland and even in the suburbs, the the situation is the same- traffic congestion everywhere! This has made movements from one location to another, within or outside the state horrendous. The situation has led to a hike in transport fares by over 200 per cent. For instance, from Oshodi to Mile 2, which used to be N200, passengers now pay between N500 and N800, depending on the situation. The same is the case with intra- state transport. The situation has forced some Lagos residents to shelve their yearly visits to their states of origin even as there are also security issues that have forced many Southeasterners to stay put in Lagos. Fuel scarcity Another difficulty faced by Lagos residents this season is the lingering fuel scarcity. It is a common feature to behold long queues at filling stations, most of which sell their products between N200 and N270. The presence of these queues, coupled with dangerous potholes on major roads and disregard for traffic regulations have not only increased the man-hours lost on these roads but also posed health hazards to the users. Lagos residents are further confronted by the intimidating sizes of trucks which are parked indiscriminately on the bridges and roads. Trucks parked on major roads before. Now, they are everywhere. With garages approved in purely residential areas by the government decency has eluded Lagos lately. These trucks are parked in residential areas like Satellite Town, Ago Palace way and Apapa areas of the state. They deprive residents access of to ways. Crime As if the highlighted difficulties are not enough, criminals compound the plights of those trapped in traffic by dispossessing them of cash, telephone and other valuables. These weapon-wielding hoodlums operate both in broad daylight and at night. These criminals also operate in Lagos markets. Many areas are no longer safe for residents. Residents blame Police, govt agencies Some Lagos residents who spoke with Saturday Vanguard, accused the Police, the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, LASTMA, Vehicle Inspection Officers and the Nigeria Customs Service of making the gridlock worse. One of them, Richard Adams, a Freight Forwarder, said, “ The Customs and Police are the major cause of gridlock in Lagos State. If you are coming from any of the ports in Apapa after a vehicle has been cleared, Customs Officers will stop us in the middle of the road at Sunrise, Otto Wharf, and Mile 2, demanding papers that have been checked inside the ports. Policemen also do that but the worst are agberos who call themselves Task Force. Until they are satisfied, they would not allow a vehicle to move. They don’t consider other vehicles behind”. Another motorist Tajudeen Mureni, said “ the impunity with which LASTMA and VIO officials carry on is unimaginable. They would stop vehicles abruptly, without considering the effect on vehicles behind. The annoying aspect is that VIO officials would flag a car down in the area where there is already gridlock, thereby heightening the sufferings of motorists that have been trapped in traffic”. Recall that former Lagos State Governor, Akinwumi had to clear them from the roads and Lagos had a respite. Sanwo Olu brought them back. FRSC speaks When contacted to know what the Federal Road Safety Corps was doing about the traffic congestion, the Lagos State Sector Commander, Commander Olusegun Ogungbemide, said “the major problem we have that is affecting the free traffic flow is the queue at the filling stations and lack of discipline of some of those procuring fuel. “ But I have directed my men to manage the traffic at the filling stations . We will continue to manage them”. Also speaking on the diversion of roads caused by construction workers, he said “construction companies are not supposed to do diversion without the authority of traffic management agencies that will manage diversion for them. The conclusion is simple. The government has failed the people. https://www.vanguardngr.com/2022/12/lagos-at-christmas-gridlock-hoodlums-traffic-robbery-potholes-everywhere/ |

The Bashir Machina Campaign Council has condemned what it called derogatory utterances made by supporters of the President of the Senate, Ahmad Lawan, against the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, during a rally organised by Lawan. The condemnation was contained in a statement signed by the Director of Media and Publicity, BSM Campaign Council, Husaini Isa, on Wednesday. Isa said anti-party utterances were made by Lawan’s supporters during the rally held in Nguru town based on video evidence circulated on social media in which they openly endorsed the Peoples Democratic Party’s presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, and his party. He said, “We have learnt that their utterances have sparked backlash from genuine APC members in Yobe North and beyond particularly those who believed in our presidential candidate, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, and our governorship candidate in Yobe State, Mai Mala Buni. “It was indeed embarrassing watching supporters of Ahmad Lawan making derogatory comments against our presidential candidate and our governor to the extent of calling them ‘traitors and irresponsible.’ “It is rather unfortunate for the Senate President to openly associate himself with the PDP by inviting their candidates to attend his purported solidarity rally in Nguru even when he is not a candidate for any political party, at least, for the 2023 general elections. “Also, it is important to state here that the utterances of his supporters at the rally are enough to recommend his suspension from the APC. We are strongly warning him to retrace his missteps by according our presidential candidate the respect he deserves. “The Campaign Council is therefore calling on the leadership of the APC to place the Senate President on its watch list because it is obvious that he has made up his mind to sabotage the party during the general elections through his anti-party group which he launched today.” https://punchng.com/anti-tinubu-comments-machina-campaign-team-chides-lawans-supporters/ |

The presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has refused to make himself available for debates and scrutiny because he had many things to hide, Phrank Shaibu, Special Assistant (Public Communication) to the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Atiku Abubakar, said on Sunday. According to him, Tinubu’s refusal to “open himself up for scrutiny, evading debates, non-partisan town hall meetings and live interviews” has exemplified the biblical theory that, “the wicked flee when no one pursues, but the righteous are bold as a lion.” Shaibu in a statement titled, “Reveal your real name, background, Atiku campaign dares Tinubu,” alleged that the entire life and persona of the APC standard bearer was based on falsehood and thus cannot address the questions and so, decided to continue to run all over the place. He said, “But these controversies did not begin today. In 2007, a former head of the civil service of Lagos State, Abdulrafiu Babatunde Tinubu, one of the eldest members of the Tinubu family, published a book titled, “Onijumu Wura: The Tinubu Dynasty of Kakawa, Lagos (The Tree). “Abdulrafiu included the names of all members of the Tinubu dynasty from the 19th century till date. Conspicuously missing from the book was the name of Bola Tinubu. The author claimed anyone whose name was not listed in the book was not an authentic member of the Tinubu family. “Atiku Abubakar’s history has never been in doubt. His father was Garba Abubakar, a Fulani trader and farmer while Atiku’s mother was Aisha Kande. Atiku was named after his paternal grandfather Atiku Abdulqadir who hails from Wurno, Sokoto State and migrated to Kojoli village at Jada, Adamawa State. His maternal grandfather was Inuwa Dutse who migrated to Jada, Adamawa State from Dutse, Jigawa State. “Where is Tinubu from? Who are his parents? Who was Tinubu’s father? What was his name? What is Tinubu’s full name? Is it Bolatito, Omobolanle, Abolaji, Bolarinwa? “While it is not uncommon for leaders to use a short version of their names, most times, for the purpose of stylistic rendition, the full outlay of their names is nonetheless public knowledge. “In the Second Republic, such names as Bisi Onabanjo, Bola Ige, Bisi Akande and many more from the Southwest region are brand names of great political icons. But even as it were, everyone knew that the Governor of Ogun State in the Second Republic was known in full as Olabisi Onabanjo, ditto for Ajibola Ige and the rest of such examples. “However, it is confounding that in the case of the APC presidential candidate, he is simply known as Bola Tinubu. No one knows the prefix or suffix to his ‘Bola.’ “Tinubu also seems to have moved from infancy directly to university in the United States of America hence his record as the only Presidential candidate in the history of Nigeria not to include his primary and secondary school information on his INEC Form CF001. “Earlier in 1999, while contesting for the governorship of Lagos State, he lied on oath that he attended St. Paul’s School, Aroloya and Government College Ibadan but his credentials were soon challenged by the late legendary lawyer, Chief Gani Fawehinmi (SAN) even as it had been established that Tinubu had no classmates in primary or secondary school. “Eager to avoid another embarrassing scrutiny, he has now decided to be silent about his primary and secondary education. Rather than tell the truth, his Campaign Spokesman, Festus Keyamo, shamelessly stated on Arise Television that Tinubu did not attend primary or secondary school and should thus be commended for beating the odds. “They are asking what primary school one must have attended to go to secondary school. We want the younger ones to know that this is a virtue and not a vice. In those days, great men wrote exams from home,” Keyamo said. This is complete balderdash given the fact that Keyamo had in 2000 sued the Lagos State House of Assembly for clearing Tinubu of school certificate forgery. “Since the APC continues to insist that they will not present their presidential candidate for media scrutiny, may we, therefore, call on the media handlers of this particular ‘Bola’ Tinubu to avail the country and its people the full outlay of Bola Tinubu’s name. “The country and its people need to know if the man seeking to become their president is known as Adebola, Ajibola or, perhaps, it’s just simply: Bola(lokan)? “The nation shall be most grateful if the APC can remove this tiny veil out of the many shades about their presidential candidate that they don’t want the Nigerian people to know about. “It is often said that you can fool some of the people all of the time, and all of the people some of the time, but you cannot fool all of the people all of the time. Nigerians must not allow a stranger, an anonymous man with no record to control the destiny of over 200 million people.” https://punchng.com/debate-tinubu-has-many-things-hidden-atikus-spokesperson/ |
