Jos – A pro-Atiku/Okowa group in Plateau State, Plateau for Atiku Movement has faulted the continued call for the resignation of the National Chairman of the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, Iyorchia Ayu saying its members are disappointed with the former Governor Jonah Jang and the G5 governors for their insistence on Ayu’s resignation. The group distanced itself from the agitation saying that Jang’s involvement with the Port Harcourt/Lagos group does not represent the thinking of the People’s Democratic Party and its members in Plateau State and called on the G5 governors to embrace peace and work for the success of the Party. Addressing journalists in Jos on Tuesday, the group through their spokesperson, a former Speaker, Istifanus Mwansat, called on Senator Jang to return to base in Plateau State and engage with his constituents to shed more light on how the position of his group affects Plateau State as an average PDP member in the State does not significantly understand the basis for his decisions and actions. According to him, “… One of the key demands of the G5 governors is that the Chairman of the Party should resign because he had agreed to do so before he emerged as the Chairman in the event that the north produced the flagbearer of the Party. As a movement, we have some concerns: If the Chairman resigns, what happens with the Deputy National Chairman (North) who is required by the PDP constitution to assume leadership? “Shifting the National Chairmanship of the Party at this moment will affect other positions thereby leading broad-based consultations and consensus for which time is not available, no serious political party will engage in leadership change at a time when other political competitors are out in the field canvassing for votes from the electorate… “As critical stakeholders working for the victory of the PDP, we are deeply concerned by the involvement and participation of one of our leaders and former Governor, Senator and member of the Board of Trustees founding member of the PDP, His Excellency, Dr. Jang with the Port Harcourt/Lagos group. “We are constrained to say that the agitation of the group to which he is part does not represent the thinking of the party and its members in the state. Therefore we wish to request that he should return to base in Plateau state and engage with his constituents to shed more light on how the positions taken by the Port Harcourt/Lagos group affect us in the state. On average, members of the PDP in Plateau state do not sufficiently understand the bases for his decisions and actions…” The group demanded to know what the North Central zone would get if the position of the National Chairman is given up, stating, “As an important State in the North Central zone, we also seek to know what we are going to get in exchange for giving up the National Chairmanship of the Party, which he supports. “Since this position belongs to the North Central zone, since we do not hold the Presidential ticket and since we have not been briefed or carried along, we see it as a disservice to us for the group to continue to demand the resignation of the Chairman without spelling out the terms. We condemn the prolongation of conditions that will hurt our Party and our candidates in my form.” The group which reiterated its support to the Atiku/Okowa, Mutfwang/Piyo and all other candidates of the PDP in the 2023 elections in the State, however, called on the G5 governors and their supporters to “embrace peace and work for the victory of the PDP in all the elections.” Meanwhile, in a swift response, former Governor Jang through his Media Consultant, Clinton Garuba noted that the demand for the resignation of the Party Chairman is borne out of the need for the equitable distribution of elective offices in the Party. He said, “… It must be made clear that the demand for the resignation of the Party chairman is borne out of the need for the equitable distribution of elective offices in the party. One wonders what the difficulty is with understanding that position. However, it will amount to crying louder than the bereaved since the Governor of Benue State, Dr. Samuel Ortom who should be at the forefront in defending the Chairman is chief among those calling for his resignation. “With regard to Plateau State, none of the leaders of the group who made the release can say that Senator Jonah Jang as a leader has never stood by his people. You would never find him wanting when it comes to defending what is in the best interest of Plateau or her people. It is unfortunate that for personal gains, or perhaps in seeking relevance the group has decided to ignore this very noble quality of the former Governor of the state, Dr. Jonah David Jang. “The Integrity Group which Jang is a member has repeatedly said that their doors are open for reconciliation and this is because members of the group are PDP members through and through. It is their desire that Alhaji Atiku Abubakar not only contests the election but wins but that can only be achieved in a just, fair and equitable manner. Not with the current prevailing atmosphere of lopsidedness.” https://www.vanguardngr.com/2022/11/pro-atiku-group-chides-jang-g5-govs-over-stance-on-ayu/ |

No fewer than 23 persons were reported to have slumped among the crowd that generated gridlock during the Permanent Voter Cards’ walk show organised in Kano State by the North-West Tinubu/Shettima campaign support group on Sunday. The one-million-man march, which took place in Kano on Sunday, started from the Emir’s palace in the ancient city and reached its climax at the Government House cenotaph roundabout where Governor Abdullahi Ganduje received the support group. The march saw many performances by power bike riders, horse riders, musicians, men and women cladded in different attires depicting the political party. First aid workers and security officers were busy ensuring the safety of those present and managing the traffic which brought most parts of the city to a standstill. Addressing newsmen at the event, the Director of the Group, Bappa Babba-Danagundi, expressed excitement over the successful conduct of the rally, describing Tinubu’s candidacy as a done deal in Kano. “I thank the Almighty God for the successful conduct of this event which shows how people have accepted and responded to our mobilisation activities for the success of Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the coming 2023 general election. “It is clear that the Tinubu presidency in Kano is a done deal,” he declared. https://punchng.com/23-persons-slump-in-kano-pro-tinubu-rally/ |

At least nine people were killed on Tuesday night by gunmen who attacked the Maikatako community in Bokkos Local Government Area of Plateau State. Reports said the attackers also set several houses on fire causing a stampede in the community. A resident of Maikato community, John Bature, who escaped the attack confirmed the killings to Punch in Jos on Wednesday. Bature said “On Tuesday, we did not sleep owing to an attack on our community by gunmen. It was by the Grace of God that I was not killed. Many of our people have already retired to their beds when some persons carrying guns entered the community and started shooting around 9:30 pm. Many people who tried to run were shot. Only this morning, I learnt that nine of the villagers were killed by the gunmen who also set several houses ablaze.” The spokesman for the Military Taskforce in charge of maintaining peace in the state, Captain Oya James, also confirmed the attack but did not give a precise casualty figure. According to him, the timely intervention by security operatives deployed to the community during the attack saved the situation. James said, “It was around 11 pm on Tuesday that somebody alerted us of an ongoing attack in a community along Bokkos road. We quickly deployed our men and the intervention was very helpful in stopping the attackers in their mission. When asked to confirm the casualty figure recorded in the community during the attack, the military spokesman responded, “Those killed were not up nine. I will get back to you to give you the actual figure but the situation is calm now.” https://witnessngr.com/nine-killed-as-gunmen-attack-plateau-village/ |

Jos—Gunmen, Wednesday night, abducted two clerics at the Mararaba Jema’a area of Jos South Local Government Area of Plateau State. The victims were travelling from Mangu Halle to Jos, when they were ambushed and abducted at about 8pm. Vanguard gathered that one of the victims, identified as Pastor Bakwa, who resides in Abuja, lost his aged father in their village, Farin Kasa, Mangu Halle, in the Mangu Local Government Area of the state, and was travelling with his family and a friend, who is also a cleric, to the village to prepare for the burial. A source said Pastor Nuhu Bakwa lost his father on Tuesday at Farin Kasa, Mangu Halle. “He left Abuja where he stays for the village to start the preparation for the burial. “Yesterday(Wednesday) he was on his way to Jos from Farin Kasa. When he got to Mararaba Jema’a with his wife, children and Pastor friend, his vehicle was stopped and the two Pastors were kidnapped while they left the wife and children. “I learned that the kidnappers have made contact and are demanding N10 million before their release.” The incident happened between 8 p.m and 9 p.m. It is very sad, the father’s corpse is yet to be buried and he only came to make arrangements for the burial.” The spokesman of the state Police Command, DSP Alfred Alabo, was yet to react to the incident at the time of this report, but a family member confirmed the abduction. https://www.vanguardngr.com/2022/11/two-clerics-abducted-in-jos/ |
See how Keyamo were sweating to defend Tinubu yesterday on Channels TV’s. |
It is understandable why the Labour Party will withhold their presidential candidate from attending debates or similar public forums if his counterparts in the All Progressives Congress and Peoples Democratic Party do not show up. Appearing at such venues while fellow contestants get to pretend they are busy doing better things can diminish. Why fritter your worth on low-stakes engagements in a society where debates do not necessarily win you an election? Yet, the LP can do better than make Obi’s (dis)appearance a mere reaction to his counterparts. Debate forums are an essential aspect of democratic processes because they are spaces to advance and defend the ideas and ideologies that determine the fate of the nation. Serious politicians use such platforms to coherently articulate their understanding of issues, advance their plans and projections, and highlight how they intend to deliver on their visions. That is also why you should hardly expect the APC candidate — and even that of the PDP who will take the cue — to refuse to show up. That is not how they know to win elections. Yes, the APC presidential campaign rambled several excuses justifying the failure of their candidate, Bola Tinubu, to be at Sunday’s town hall meeting organised by AriseTV. He will possibly also avoid future gatherings where he will have to speak extemporaneously to a crowd not pre-selected for his benefit. Truth is, he would be foolish to attend presidential debates. He would be far better off being jeered for running away than risking the thorough self-demystification that will follow his appearance at those forums. There is no benefit for him to subject himself to any town hall meetings, debates, and even media interviews outside the arrangee shows his aides create for him. First, their party is incumbent, and meeting the public to canvass for votes means he would have to defend their record. Honestly, there is no winning that game if he plays it. Nobody — and I repeat, nobody — thinks Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.) has done a good job. Even the APC stalwarts are embarrassed about how he has turned out to be the worst leader in the history of modern Nigeria. These days, when even his minions appear on television, you can practically hear the hand-wringing in their voices when they inundate you with a litany of apologies like ‘recession,’ ‘oil price,’ ‘pandemic,’ ‘Russia-Ukraine.’ They started out in 2015 blaming every evil in Nigeria on the “16 years of the PDP” and are still not short of excuses. Tinubu, who also played a decisive role in planting Buhari into power, will have to answer for Buhari’s failures if he faces the public. Nothing about his career as a public officer suggests he understands accountability. The only language he speaks is ‘loyalty,’ not to any higher cause — mind you — but to himself alone. Second, presidential debates are also a forum to put forward your record as a CV to the public and justify why they should give you a job. Of what can this jeun soke politician boast? Of course, they will mention ‘Lagos’ as his record of success, but even that is a negative. Look, no matter how many tantrums their errand boys throw on this matter, it will not stop me from pointing out how Lagos is a failure. The same political collective has ruled that state for 23 years, yet it ranks very low on every livability index. The crux of cityness is based on the quality of the public infrastructure that makes for good education, healthcare, security, mobility, leisure, hygiene, and shared community facilities. Of how many of these does Lagos boast? Recently, road transport workers in the state went on strike to complain about the extortion they suffer at the hands of the state-sanctioned louts managing their motor parks. The impunity and pure robbery that typifies the experiences of these beleaguered road transport workers are illustrative of the genius farce that runs the state. There is no real substance to all their lauded achievements; much of it is merely extractive. The only thing that works for them is the propaganda architecture that allows the papering over their daily raid of the lives and livelihood of the people. The third factor is the amount of physical and mental stamina required to withstand a public forum like a debate while absorbing the hostility expected to exude from both the in-person audience and those viewing the broadcast on millions of electronic devices. Presidential debates are a space for gladiators who can endure such and still stand. They typically have some practice in the art of rhetoric, the simultaneous contestation and defence of ideas. The political debate culture was built around people who can think on their feet, not tired men who cannot recall the last time they had a fresh insight. Not enough politicians in Nigeria have been trained for the process. Many of them cut their teeth through one-way dialogues with hired crowds who throng the campaign grounds — not to listen to anything the politicians have to say — but merely wait for the right cue to break into the song of “on your mandate we stand.” The audience knows the process is a farce, and theirs is to supply the background noise. Outside those spaces, Tinubu is very vulnerable. His handlers will be smart to keep him away from scrutiny. I do not expect him to go to any debate they have not specially curated for him to shine. If Tinubu should attend a presidential debate, I can imagine how flustered he will be if he has to answer the lingering question of how he became a bagman for a drug cartel and the moral implications for the nation. For a man whose gaffes already supply comedians, skit makers, meme-makers, and TikTokers with content, he will be a self-writing joke for a whole week. He has survived his public engagements by depending on a battery of ghostwriters, speech writers, and spin doctors who pretend they can extract sense from the incoherence of a man whose political philosophy is built on the infrastructure of the stomach. The question for the rest of us is how to proceed from here. Debates are crucial to inscribe the ethos of democracy, but what do you do when the candidates of the so-called major parties are unlikely to attend them? They are wedded to the tactics of winning elections based on the sentiments of religion and ethnicity, and public debates expose them. The PDP vice presidential candidate represented his team on Sunday but asking presidential candidates to debate the vices (pun intended, yes!) of their opponents is demeaning. If the APC/PDP candidates continue to stay away from public forums, it will be unfair to continue to ask the third-party candidates to perform the mental and physical labour while the APC and PDP reap the benefits of not getting scrutinised. At the same time, I worry when parties like the LP calibrate the public appearances of their candidate on who else shows up or not. The point of having a third party was not to merely replicate the toxicity that characterises the supposedly big two. It was to break the stasis they represent. The goal was to depart from the standard political means — which had become wholly oppressive and entirely non-regenerative — and to begin forming new habits. Obi’s handlers should rethink how they can balance the ethical necessity of subjecting their candidate to public dialogue without risking his overexposure. https://punchng.com/itll-be-foolish-of-tinubu-to-attend-presidential-debates/ |
THE Northern Elders Forum (NEF) has described as ‘diversionary’ the comments of Benue state governor, Samuel Ortom, who in condemning the killing of 18 people in his council area last Friday said that he would never support a Fulani man to become president of Nigeria again. Ortom had, while hosting his colleagues from Rivers, Oyo, Abia and Enugu States to a dinner party in Makurdi, said: “You want me to be a slave for a Fulani. It’s better I die. My people are being killed and you want me to be quiet. I will never support a Fulani man to become president. If there is another person who is ready to work with me and ensure the security of my people, I will work with him.” But Northern Elders Forum, in a statement on Wednesday signed by its Director, Publicity and Advocacy, Dr Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, said the Governor’s comments was totally unbecoming of a leader, especially at a time when the scourge of insecurity in the country is politicised. The Forum said, “We, like other Nigerians, watched the video in which Governor of Benue State, Samuel Ortom speaks in a manner and language totally unbecoming of a leader, at a time when standards of responsibility and decorum should be at their highest levels. “He was apparently addressing citizens on recent killing of villagers which he attributes to Fulani herders. “Even while making allowances for the established patterns of rhetorics and practice of Governor Ortom on inter-communal relations, this latest outburst should be condemned in a most emphatic manner. “It does neither justice to the condemnable killings in Benue State, nor to the standing of the Governor before his people. “The context of a politicized environment does not excuse this latest demeaning outing of Governor Ortom. On the contrary, it diverts attention from the latest tragedy that has befallen citizens and families in Benue State. “Northern Elders Forum has consistently condemned the state of siege and insecurity under which Nigerians have lived in the last few years. In the North in particular, rogue Fulani elements have stood out as killers, bandits and kidnappers. “The Forum will continue to demand that those who are asking for our votes in 2023 will show in clear and specific terms how they plan to re-secure all Nigerians. They must also demonstrate how they intend to address damaging profiling and deliberate exploitation of passions eminently demonstrated by Governor Ortom. “The Forum demands that leaders and politicians de-politicize the scourge of insecurity under which we all live. It further demands that killers of villagers in Benue State, and other citizens in other villages in many parts of the North must be traced and prosecuted. “Governor Ortom should live up to his oath and his commitment to his mandate to live as a responsible leader of his people. “He should avoid the temptation to play to a gallery which, like all Nigerians, is desperate for relief and an end to the killings which pitch them against each other and leads them towards unending conflicts. https://www.vanguardngr.com/2022/11/northern-elders-tackle-ortom-over-comment-on-fulani/ |

"In Nigeria, where Boko Haram, Fulani herdsmen, militia and many other insurgent groups are of Islamic extraction, fielding a Muslim-Muslim ticket is not acceptable; so, as far as we are concerned, he (Tinubu) is out of the consideration because we have to look at things that will benefit the nation, not just considering things based on sentiment.” It will be dangerous to hand over Nigeria wealth to Tinubu and his extremely corrupted gangs. |
The Middle Belt Forum has slammed a leader of the pan-Yoruba socio-cultural organisation, Pa Reuben Fasoranti, for endorsing the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, saying that history will judge him (Fasoranti) for his action. Crisis rocked Afenifere when the group reportedly declared its support for Tinubu during the former Lagos State governor’s visit to leaders of the group in Akure, Ondo State. Fasoranti and other Afenifere chiefs were also said to have prayed for the APC presidential candidate. The endorsement was, however, dismissed by the acting leader of the socio-cultural group, Pa Ayo Adebanjo, who maintained that the presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, remained Afenifere’s choice, adding that Fasoranti had no constitutional authority to act as the leader of the organisation. But the President of the Middle Belt Forum, Pogu Bitrus, said in an interview with our Sunday PUNCH, “It’s an unfortunate development because we believe leaders of the socio-cultural groups are people who have gone beyond the levels of parochial ethnic and whatever consideration, looking at things passionately at the national level. “Pa Fasoranti, with his age and everything, we respect him. We know that he left that office about two years or so ago and Pa Adebanjo is the leader. His coming back to make such an issue out of the context of Bola Ahmed Tinubu is an unfortunate development and I think history will judge him, not because we are of different views. “That is not the reason; the reason is we believe that at a stage in life, one goes beyond some level of being parochial, but act as a statesman. I want him to reconsider his stance.” Bitrus, who said the MBF did not see Fasoranti’s endorsement of Tinubu as an attempt by politicians to cause confusion within Afenifere and divide it, urged him (Fasoranti) to consider whether his action was in the best interest of Nigeria. Asked whether the Middle Belt Forum was open to engaging with presidential candidates, he said, “We have already declared our stand. Right before the primaries, we said we would not support a northern candidate because we believe it is the turn of the South. While we were open to all southern candidates, Bola Ahmed Tinubu did what we believe we cannot accept. “In Nigeria, where Boko Haram, Fulani herdsmen, militia and many other insurgent groups are of Islamic extraction, fielding a Muslim-Muslim ticket is not acceptable; so, as far as we are concerned, he (Tinubu) is out of the consideration because we have to look at things that will benefit the nation, not just considering things based on sentiment.” However, the Pan Niger Delta Forum said it had not endorsed any presidential candidate for the 2023 general elections. PANDEF said although it met with Peter Obi on August 23 in Lagos, it made it clear that it would engage with other southern presidential candidates The spokesperson for the group, Ken Robinson, said, “There has been no consensus on Peter Obi. PANDEF has not endorsed any presidential candidate. PANDEF agreed that the next president should come from southern Nigeria. “As was communicated in the last extraordinary meeting that was held on the October 20, we made it clear that we were open to engaging with all presidential candidates from southern Nigeria; it is after those engagements that PANDEF will communicate its decision on who to support. “Our position at the meeting of the Southern and Middle Belt Forum which was held on June 25 was and remains that we shall engage with all southern presidential candidates. “Let me also add that before the primaries, the Southern and Middle Belt Forum, based on the issues of fairness, justice, fairness, and equity, and inclusiveness, had added a caveat to our demand for power shift to southern Nigeria by saying preferably to the South-East and that did not indicate any presidential candidate at the time.” https://punchng.com/history-will-judge-fasoranti-for-endorsing-tinubu-mbf/ |
