Announcing his demise in a tweet at about 9.pm on Tuesday, Nigerian Journalist/Publisher, Dele Momodu, said: “Nigeria, and indeed Africa, has just lost one of its greatest sons; Ambassador Chief Antonio Dehinde Fernandez is gone!” He died on the 1st of September , 2015 in Belgium. Source |
President Buhari recently named a couple of folks to national leadership roles in the country. A lot of folks were unhappy with the makeup of the a list of appointees. I have heard everything from “Arewa List” to “Bring Back the Northern Oligarchy” accusations lunged at Buhari. But it has been less than 100 days in office for the general and so far, I don’t think he has been judged fairly by his detractors(also known as haters). On the matter of this recent appointees, I am solidly behind GMB and here is why: INTEGRITY None of the appointees on these list has ever been mentioned with even a hint of corruption before, at least not to my knowledge, and I am sure if any had been, by now, the Ndigbo and Southerners will be running riot. If there is one thing Nigeria is in grave need of, it is leaders of integrity. Of course, because a man has not stolen before doesn’t mean he will not steal tomorrow but right now Buhari has nothing to work on than reputation. It doesn’t matter if a good man is from the town on the borderline between Nigeria and Cameroun; what matters is that we can trust him. COMPETENCE I have done my research and honestly I am very impressed. There are PhD holders on the list, individuals with unrivalled experience both home and abroad. Their resumes are on fleek abeg so seriously unless their village people start doing them there is no reason why these appointees will not get the job done. That is what we need, to get the job done! Look at Abba Kyari, the new Chief of staff, for instance, He holds 2 degrees in law from Cambridge (Cambridge for heavens sake! )and another one in Sociology. He has worked as director in both Unilever and ExxonMobil. I mean, just because he cannot say “Igbo kwenu” with the right intonation doesn’t mean he is wrong for the job. GOODLUCK EBELE JONATHAN This past government rubbished the people of the south-south as some of the most incompetent people in West Africa. I mean, just look at the people he surround himself with-some of the most clueless people ever and majority were southerners and westerners (Think Doyin Okupe etc!) Can you honestly blame Buhari for being reluctant to look to that part for the country for his team? VOTES Did you folks somehow forget who voted Buhari into power? No it wasn’t Ndigbo or the Niger Delta. The Yoruba Yoruba people tried their best but greedy folks like Fayose did not help matters. Buhari is human and if he is somehow partial to the North in his appointments because they voted for him, next time the rest of you should try and wake up a little earlier and smell the coffee. You will be okay in the end. POPULATION I know Lagosians like to deceive themselves that they are the most populated state in Nigeria. It is a lie of the devil. Whether we like it or not, the North is responsible for a bigger percentage of Nigeria’s population than any other geographical area. So if there are 5 Hausa men in every 10 Nigerians, what part of the country do you exactly expect to have more appointments? Yeah that’s right! Now stop speaking Turanci and allow this man do this work. TIME It has taken Buhari this long to come up with appointees. Honestly we should be doing thanksgiving and not complaining. More Important Issues: Not every time argue, Nigerians. We need to learn which battles to fight. No really, we do. Fighting with a conductor that can beat you effortlessly for N20 is not worth it-your hospital bill will be bigger if he gets his hands on you. If it is N100 change and above now, I for hear. Same with Buhari’s government; let’s wait to expend our energy on the impending economy crisis that these falling oil prices will bring or on sending positive vibes to our troops fighting Boko Haram. Priorities people, priorities. I hope with these facts, I have been able to convince you that Buhari meant his word when he said “I am for nobody and I am for everybody!” Let’s allow the man work abeg and stop giving him headache left right and center. claremont:Lol i dont know where you live but where i am to own a home you have to be a millionaire. TBH i dont currently live in naija but i plan to one im finished here. one would be very foolish to turn their back on home at a time like this. Big things are happening and more Millionaires and Billionaires (Legally) are poppin up in naija than ever before if you miss out. https://forwardnigeria.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/Nigeria_Airways_5N-ANR_CDG_1982.png Hello there, Nigerians in the diaspora. This past decade there has been a huge global focus on Nigeria, good and bad. The good aspect of this has led many Nigerians living abroad to consider the possibility of returning home to contribute their quota to the country’s development. Many have returned and many are considering it. If you are one fo the latter, here is a list of reasons why the move would be great for you: Largest Economy In The Africa There is whole lot of opportunity in Nigeria these days economically. With over 170 million people, the market is huge and keeps growing. Multinationals such as P&G, Nestle etc are making a huge chunk of their revenue here and small businesses are popping up left right and center. Just look at Lagos alone, every one has a legitimate hustle-from the pure water seller to Dangote. There has never been an easier time to do business in the country than now so if your goal is to be a business person, Nigeria is the place to be Democracy Since 1999, Nigeria has been led by a democratic government. Gone are the days of the military rule that drove a lot of people outside the country seeking for greener pastures. In terms of political stability, Nigeria is one of the more stable African countries to return home to Friendly and Hospitable People Nigerians are one of the friendliest people in the world. Infact Nigeria was once ranked as one of the happiest countries in the world. SO if it is hospitality you are missing, Nigeria is the place for you. Food When it comes to Nigerian food, there is no place like home. If you are a foodie and just tired of all those ‘Nigerian’ restaurants abroad serving potty, then my friend, it is time you considered returning home to take advantage of the delicious and much healthier meals here. Family Nobody can be like family and this is a major consideration for returnees. If you are missing your family too much, your best bet might be returning home so you have them close by. Nigeria is also one of the best places to raise kids. The proverb of how the whole village raises a kid continues to be true here. If you don’t alienate your family and people around you, you can be sure that your kid will grow up surrounded by people that want their best. Racism This one is a no-brainer. If you are living in a country where racism is the order of the day, then it might be time to pack your bags and come home. Needless to say, there is zero racism in the country with the most black people in the world. Affordable Living So long as you don’t settle in Lekki, Victoria Island, Maitama, Asokoro etc, we think you can save more money and live like a king in Nigeria compared to your 700 SQ feet apartment in Zurich. Food is cheaper here as well and tastier(Foodies again!) There! With these reasons we hope we have been able to convince you about returning home. To play fair, next week we will return with reasons why you shouldn’t return to your Nigeria. Source |
https://forwardnigeria.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/08/03_NIGERIAInvestment1.jpg Nigerians like to think they are smart and honestly being a Nigerian myself I agree – we are very smart, infact some of the smartest people on earth. The only thing be say our smartest no dey ever pass MMIA. In less than a year, Oil prices have dropped significantly. Infact let me spell it out on plain terms, oil has lost an average of $80 per barrel since prices started dropping. For a country like Nigeria that is solely dependent on the oil revenue , this is not good news. Canada which leans heavily on its revenue from oil is already beginning to see a contraction in its economy and putting measures in place. Canada’s total population is 35 million people. We figure they can survive by selling ridiculously priced ski jackets to their American cousins. Nigeria however has a population of over 170 million people with 1/10th the land mass of Canada and little or no exports, But do you see my brothers and sisters worried? Mbanu! Everything carries on like nothing is happening. Worst case scenario if the price of garri increases again, we will protest Buhari’s government abi? Anyway, jokes asides, here are a couple of things we can expect if the oil crisis continues. RISE IN UNEMPLOYMENT Oil companies are already downsizing. This will have a spiral effect of course. As oil companies downsize, they will need less HR conulsting work, less consulting in general so expect consulting firms like KPMG, PWC to feel the impact. If you work in a firm directly related to oil or one whose major customers are in the oil industry, it is time to dust your resume or start thinking of a side gig. In the evergreen words of Pete Edochie, “He who has an ear, let him hear what the spirit is saying…” Oh wait that was the Bible I think. BUDGET CUTS When Alagba Bode’s salary was formerly N10,000 but now his boss has reduced it to N3,000, guess what happens to Alagba’s budget? It becomes ridiculously lean. Alagba Bode here is the FG and we are assuming that Alagba Bode has been delivered of his wasteful tendencies thanks to the new broom (GMB) in the house. Expect a lot of budget cuts but hopefully this means the era of wastefulness especially that of the lawgivers o over. For the average Nigerian, this also applies. It is a trickle effect and all those holidays to Disney World will have to take the back seat as parents struggle to pay school fees NAIRA Since the beginning of the oil palava, the Naira has heard it. From N170-N240 to a dollar in the past year, it has been a rollercoaster ride for this poor baby. Emefiele looks and sounds clueless so we cannot be very hopeful for magic from that angle. Also the American economy is showing some real strength so we can’t even blame the matter on CBN alone. We can onl Businesses are going to pack up: Nigerians like American things. American movies, American clothes, Calvin Klein boxers, Ralph Lauren shirts, Tokunbo cars used in America and so on. As the Naira loses value against the dollar, the businesses importing this will have to either pass on this cost to their customers or die. Since Nigerians along with being smart are also Alaroros, expect some businesses to pack up which will in turn aid and abet point 1. RISING COST OF LIVING Nigerians import almost everything. Yes this includes Garri and since the dollar is the main for of exchange when doing business with other countries, a N10 cup of Garri will soon be going for N15. I saw on Twitter the other day that one biscuit we used to buy for lik N100 is now N200 and I wept for Nigerian children everywhere. If their parents are smart, as they are coming out from the womb, they will start bribing them with garri as something special. The beauty of this whole thing is that Nigerians are resilient as well as smart. I expect that for every business that packs up, a few others will spring up to suit the new economic environment. I am especially hopeful that this new government is finally savvy and eager to grow the economy from the inside rather than through borrowing or importing. Here is hoping. Source |
https://forwardnigeria.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/12/VO-1551-p4-black_child.jpg Story telling is such a beautiful art. More than any other people, Africans have mastered this art the best. Just take a look at the hieroglyphics from Egypt and how they tell tales of the times of the Pharaohs, tales that would have been otherwise lost. Contemporary African authors have taken the African stories to paper and ink, a medium that will ensure the African story is never forgotten. There are many great books by African authors, some of whom I have not been privileged to read. Yet. Here however are my 10 must read books by African Authors for all lovers of literature and story telling. The African Child – Camara Laye I read this as a 11 year old and loved every word. In it, Laye describes life, growing up as an African child in Guinea, West Africa. Deeply nostalgic, the book is an autobiography portraying a vision of Islamic and ancient African community in the pre colonial era, a time when tradition engendered mutual understanding and respect for all. The Beautyful Ones Are Not Yet Born – Ayi Kwei Armah This is another childhood favorite although I didn’t understand much of it then until I read it a second time as an adult. It is a satirical attack on the Ghanaian society during Kwame Nkrumah’s regime and the period immediately after independence in the 1960. The book is regarded by many as a close second to Chinua Achebe’s Things Fall Apart as one of the finest books to come out of Africa. The Narrow Path – Francis Selormey One word to describe this one? Nostalgic. Effortless. Okay that is two words but what a perfect book. Selormey takes us a journey of childhood in rural Ghana. Growing up as the first child has its pains and joys for our little hero and you can’t help but root for Kofi, not even when he is beinga little rascal. Like an African Child, this book is descriptive and filled with imagery that will stay with you for a long time. Weep Not Child – Ngũgĩ wa Thiong’o Ngugi does a great job with this story, weaving fiction and non-fiction seamlessly into a wonderful tale. It is a moving story about the effects of the Mau Mau war on the lives of ordinary men and women in Kenya. Things Fall Apart – Chinua Achebe Take a deep bow people. This is one of the finest books ever written- by anyone, from wherever. It is probably the best known African novel and has become one of the world’s most influential literary masterpieces. Since publication, nearly 12 million copies have been sold(did i hear someone say ‘bestseller’), with translations into more than 50 languages. The book has been made into TV series- I clearly remember Pete Edochie’s apt interpretation of the book’s hero Okonkwo. The Passport of Mallam Ilia – Cyprian Ekwensi Ekwensi is one of an unsung hero of African story telling. From Jagua Nana to Toads for Supper, this wordsmith captures our minds with beautiful tales from all over Nigeria. The Passport of Mallam Ilia is an adventure set in Northern Nigeria and has everything a thriller should possess-adventure, love, betrayal and suspense. It is a beautiful story that will stay with you, long after the last page Cry The Beloved Country – Alan Paton Your heart cannot help but fill with love and hope after reading this masterpiece. I saw the movie first but no matter, it didn’t spoil the book for me. This is probably the most famous and important novel in South Africa’s history and it became an immediate worldwide bestseller in 1948. It is the deeply moving story of the Zulu pastor Stephen Kumalo and his son, Absalom, set against the background of a land and a people riven by racial injustice. There are so many good contemporary authors today as well; the Adichies, Wainainas etc. Which are your favorite African authors and books? Tell us in the comments. Source |

A particular rumor has been going around the Nigeria retail space for a few years now; let’s call it “The Walmart Rumor!” And because there is no smoke without fire, on a team from Walmart visited the Governor of Lagos State recently. Shelley Broader, President and Chief Executive Officer of Walmart Incorporated Europe, Middle East, Africa and Canada visited Governor Ambode in a quest to establish business presence in Nigeria starting with Lagos. Ambode welcomed the Walmart executives while pledging his commitment to create “an enabling environment” for the global retail company because “the presence of the brand in Lagos will go a long way not only to create jobs for our teeming youths, but also to boost the economy of the state…” While all these sounds great and Nigerians that have returned home from diaspora must be overjoyed out of their minds to know their favorite brands will soon be accessible, there will be some negative consequences. Read on as we discuss what Walmart will be bringing to the largest economy in Africa, good and bad: Jobs Walmart stores in North America are huge and one store can employ over a 100 employees. And these are just store jobs- there will also be administrative opportunities, truck and transportation opportunities and so on. Before the store can be set up, there will be building and construction jobs. We can expect Walmart to have a finance and legal team as well. Young intelligent folks looking for an opportunity to work for a global organization will be wise to start looking into the coming opportunities. More Brands Walmart is a great and cheap way for a small/medium-sized brand/company to enter into a new market. Many brands that were previously unknown to the average Nigerian are going to use this opportunity to enter the Sub-Saharan market at little cost. Nigerian waist-lines and pockets get ready! Obesity As many new brands, especially food products come into the Nigerian marketplace, we can expect a rise in obesity rates. Walmart is not exactly particular about the health benefits of the products it carries. It is not Whole Foods. It is more particular about cost. As more Nigerians make Walmart their destination for grocery shopping, rather than the usual open place markets, they will take advantage of the cheap products Walmart provides and sacrifice quality and fresh options. Cheaper Options As mentioned in the previous point, Walmart tries its very best to be the cheaper alternative. This means Nigerians will have the opportunity to push a few bucks even longer and wider than before. Competition Walmart has a lot of money behind it. Think $22 billion in profits alone. Addo market women cannot compete with that. Aba cannot compete with that. Shoprite/Spar won’t know where to begin. Competition can be good and can be bad. For the most part, Walmart in the US has destroyed a lot of small trading businesses. Shoprite has not been able to do this-probably because of accessibility. Before letting Walmart into Nigeria, the government must put rules in place that will protect small businesses from the impact. Foreign Investment Yes, Walmart will need to spend to set up in Nigeria and that means some dollars will come flowing into the economy soon. Aside that, the presence of Walmart will sooner or later attract other retailers and companies to give it a try. If Walmart can succeed, I am sure Target, Costco, Tesco etc will consider giving the Nigerian market a try too. Nigerians think walking around in huge shopping stores are a great leisure activity. Just visit any Shoprite branch for an insight into this weird behavior. The coming of Walmart will therefore reduce the pressure on the aisles of Shoprite. Nigerians will have a new destination to behave weirdly. Walmart doesn’t even know what it is in for yet! These are our thoughts on this retail giant’s presence in Nigeria. What do you think? Do the advantages preclude the disadvantages? Can we ignore the disadvantages and just focus on the good? For the business owners, how can you take advantage of this coming reality? http://forwardnigeria.com/7-things-walmart-will-bring-to-nigeria/ |

The powerful former governor of Jigawa state, Sule Lamido, and two of his sons are to remain in prison until at least September 28 for allegations of mismanagement of over N1.3 billion in State funds. The three men are standing trial at the Federal High Court in Kano for a 28-count charge filed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). Ex-Kano Governor Sule Lamido is accused of mismanaging over N1.3 billion in State fundsPremium Times The former governor is alleged to have awarded contracts valued at N1.3 billion to some companies owned by his children. The EFCC also seeks to charge him and his sons with money-laundering and abuse of office. Lamido’s eldest son, Aminu, was arrested at the Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport for under-declaration and was subsequently convicted for a similar offense (money laundering). The presiding judge, Justice Evelyn Anyadime, adjourned the case to September 28, when hearing on the substantive suit will begin. The accused were taken to the Kano prison in a Toyota bus belonging to the Nigeria Prison Service, guarded by tight security. Outside the court premises, hundreds of protesting youths chanted songs in solidarity with the former governor. Some of them carried placards with inscriptions in his support. One of the placards read, “It’s political motivated. We stand with you. God will see you through.” The court appearance also attracted top members of the Peoples Democratic Party from Kano and Jigawa. In his resolve to end the lingering crisis of unpaid workers’ salaries in the country, especially in several beleaguered states, President Muhammadu Buhari on Monday approved a comprehensive three-pronged relief package. These are: * The sharing of about $2.1B in fresh allocation between the states and the federal government. The money will come from recent LNG proceeds to the federation account. * A Central Bank of Nigeria-packaged special intervention fund that will offer financing to the states, ranging from between N250B to N300B. This would be a soft loan available to them to access for the purposes of paying the backlog of salaries. *A debt relief program designed by the Debt Management Office (DMO), to help states restructure their commercial loans currently estimated at N660B and extend the life span of such loans while reducing their debt-servicing expenditures. This third option, by extending the commercial loans of the states, would more funds available to the state governments that would otherwise have been removed at source by the banks. The federal government will sway its financial muscle to guarantee the elongation of the loans for the benefit of the states. Informed government sources explained over the weekend that this package, which was considered at the National Economic Council (NEC), last week, is designed specifically to bring relief to government workers, some of whom have not been paid for over 10 months. Contacted on Monday, presidential spokesman Femi Adesina confirmed the special package for the workers, adding that the president is deeply concerned about their plight. Speaking at the inauguration of the NEC last week, President Buhari asked the Council, which is a constitutional advisory body to him, to consider as a matter of priority how to liquidate the unpaid salaries of workers across the country, noting the untold hardship it has brought to them. While the over $2B which is being sourced from LNG proceeds to the federation account would be shared among the states using the revenue allocation formula, the CBN will also make available the special intervention fund to states and then negotiate the terms with individual states. The packages that has now been approved by President Buhari is expected to go into effect this week as he is said to have directed that a swift release of the funds. At the NEC meeting, the relief measures were extensively discussed between the state governors and top officials of the federal government, including the CBN governor and the Permanent Secretaries of the Ministries of Finance and Petroleum Resources. Other agencies that were actively involved in the process include the DMO and officials from the Office of the Accountant General of the Federation. Media reports last month say no fewer than 12 of the 36 states of the federation are facing difficult times as the salaries they owe their workers are approximately N110bn. They include the debts being owed by the governments of 10 of Osun, Rivers, Oyo, Ekiti, Kwara, Kogi, Ondo, Plateau, Benue, and Bauchi states. Informed sources said the Finance Ministry and the CBN may have pegged the amount needed to settle all the outstanding public workers’ salaries at about N250B. There are also employees of the federal government whose salaries have are back logged; the package is expected to address those cases as well. Experts say this presidential bailout to the workers will boost the purchasing power of a good percentage of the Nigerian consumers and thereby reflate the economy.
