Web Developement can divided into two Front End Dev and Back End Dev.

Front End Developement

long story short to be a decent front end developer must be familiar with atleast the following

HTML/CSS at the highest levels
DOM Manipulation at the highest levels
REST API Clients i.e Parsing XML but mainly Parsing JSON objects

Front end developers can further be divided into Web Designer , (User experience) UX and (User Interface) UI Designer.

Honestly a web designer falls into the lowest pecking order of the bunch because as bet your only creating html and CSS

Decent Web designers know the following

HTML/CSS
Photo manipulation i.e Photoshop or Vectors
PSD to HTML Convertion

Back end Developers
Backend developers deal with everything server side i.e PHP however backend these days are written in many different languages even javascript.

Decent back end developers must know the following

A server side language i.e PHP at the highest levels
Databases i.e MYSQL
REST Api servers and Clients.

These days people are being put in highly specialized positions instead of the generic full stack developer. Personally a good UI and UX designer is much more useful than a web designer. With them much better software is created.

Now this is just a tip theres is ALOT more when it comes to dev today theres alot involved just to keep up with the latest practices i.e git , grunt , the MEAN stack vs LAMP . With every innovation made another level of complexity is added that overall provides a very efficient work flow but one more be vigilant in order to keep up. In short for naija we never start
