Politics › I Risked My Life To Abuja For Osun’s Sake, Says Adeleke by Antoeni(op): 5:09am On Jan 05, 2024 |
Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke has denied claims that his administration has slashed traditional rulers’ statutory monthly allocation by 2.5 per cent, saying: “I risked my life to Abuja for Osun State’s sake and I don’t need government money but will rather add to it.”
Adeleke, responding to agitations by traditional rulers, who claimed that the current administration had slashed their statutory during their monthly meeting held at the Finance Building, Abere yesterday, explained that monthly allocation varied, hence it was affecting the five per cent deduction for traditional rulers.
The Nation learnt that traditional rulers during a closed door meeting with Governor Adeleke ahead of the open meeting lamented that the state government was taking from the five per cent meant for the traditional rulers monthly, leaving only 2.5 per cent for the kings. https://thenationonlineng.net/i-risked-my-life-to-abuja-for-osuns-sake-says-adeleke/

Politics › N37 Billion Probe: Ex-Minister, Sadiya Umar-Farouq Gets EFCC’s 72-hour Ultimatum by Antoeni(op): 4:43am On Jan 05, 2024 |
• Anti-graft agency rejects three weeks’ extension request by Sadiya Umar-FarouqFormer Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development, Sadiya Umar-Farouq, must appear at the Abuja headquarters of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for interrogation, the agency has said. The minister, who cited health challenges, approached the anti-graft agency through her counsel, requesting that the deadline be extended by three weeks.
But the Commission yesterday asked her to appear before its team within three days for interrogation.
The ex-minister was invited over the alleged laundering of N37, 170,855,753.44 in her ministry during her tenure through a contractor, James Okwete.
Although the ex-minister has denied having any link with the implicated contractor, the anti-graft commission insisted that she should come for questioning.
The one-time minister formally wrote to the Executive Chairman of EFCC, Mr. Ola Olukoyede, that she was indisposed.
A source said: “In her letter, she asked the EFCC to give her three weeks to attend to her health before honouring the commission’s investigation. The letter was delivered by her counsel on Wednesday.
“But the EFCC said it cannot delay the investigation for three weeks. It has given the ex-minister three days to appear or risk being declared wanted.
“Olukoyede has put a new system in place such that you can appear before EFCC detectives and sleep in your home the same day. There is no need to panic at all.
“We are expecting her; our team is on standby. Even if she requires medical help, we will avail her of our first-class facility.”
EFCC spokesman Dele Oyewale said: “We got a letter from the ex-minister that she could not honour our invitation due to some health challenges.
“Since her lawyer brought the letter, the EFCC has also responded accordingly.”
The EFCC letter to the ex-minister reads: “The commission is investigating a case of money laundering involving the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development during your time as minister.
“In view of the above, you are requested to kindly report for an interview with the undersigned scheduled as follows: Wednesday, 3rd of January, 2024. Time: 10am.
“This request is made pursuant to Section 38 (I) of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (Establishment) Act, 2004 & Section 21 of the Money Laundering (Prohibition) Act, 2011.”
Oyewale, who spoke on the matter when he was featured on television, said the agency has directed her to honour the invitation without further delay.
He said: “It is true that she didn’t show up, but she sent a letter pleading for more time, explaining that she had some health challenges.
“She didn’t shun EFCC’s invitation. She actually gave reasons why she couldn’t meet up.
“Her lawyer was also at the commission to brief the anti-graft agency on why she couldn’t come or honour the invitation.”
The EFCC spokesman also explained that the N37.1 billion being mentioned might not be the correct amount misappropriated by the Humanitarian Affairs Ministry.
He said: “On the figure that is being bandied about, I cannot categorically confirm the figure because it is an ongoing thing.
“We are still tracing all the transactions here and there. It may be more than that.
“We can’t publish a figure now until we finish the tracking and it may be more than what is being brandished now.”
Oyewale said that the National Coordinator and Chief Executive Officer of the National Social Investment Programme Agency (NSIPA), Halima Shehu, has been released after interrogation.
He added: “She was the National Coordinator in charge of the Conditional Cash Transfer Programme under the Ministry during Buhari’s tenure.
“She has been queried over some of the money that left the ministry’s coffers through her.” https://thenationonlineng.net/n37b-probe-ex-minister-gets-efccs-72-hour-ultimatum/?utm_source=&utm_medium=twitter

Social media influencer, Reno Omokri, has urged President Bola Tinubu to ban sports betting apps in the country. According to Omokri, a ban on sports betting apps could even help improve the value of the Naira. Omokri, who quoted the National Lottery Trust Fund. lamented that “$1 billion is spent on gambling daily in Nigeria.” The media influencer expressed his views in a series of tweets shared via his X profile on Communications Commission to ban sports betting apps from the App Store of any GSM Internet Service Provider in Nigeria and revoking the licenses of any physical sports betting operators in Nigeria. It makes better sense than Buhari’s draconian #TwitterBan.” The former Special Assistant to erstwhile President Goodluck Jonathan stated that an average Nigerian spends “$15 daily on sports betting and other types of gambling. Omokri noted that despite the high rate of gambling in the country, the “vast majority of that amount” is leaving the shores of the country into foreign nations, compared to the nation’s externally generated revenue. “This is scary. How much is our GDP that we are pissing it away like that? More money is leaving Nigeria through gambling than is coming in,” he wrote. Omokri cautioned., “The Naira can never sustain its rally under such circumstances.” The tweet stated further, “There is such an epidemic of gambling in Nigeria and it is destroying Nigerian youths. $1 billion is spent on gambling daily in Nigeria, according to the National Lottery Trust Fund. Please fact-check me. “The average Nigerian spends $15 daily on sports betting and other types of gambling, with the vast majority of that amount leaving our economy and going to places like Russia, South Africa, and Europe. The Naira can never sustain its rally under such circumstances.” Findings by PUNCH Online reveal that several sports betting firms operate in Nigeria. Some of the betting firms include Bet9ja, Nairabet, Merry Bet and SportyBet, amongst others. Omokri, in his post, further urged Tinubu to “act on such a matter as threatening to our national security as this gambling epidemic.” He also condemned the illegal means through which some Nigerian youths sought money “to fund their gambling habit." PUNCH Online reports that the Minister of Special Duties and Intergovernmental Affairs, Zephaniah Jisalo, said the Federal Government would find a lasting solution to the friction caused by revenue generation in the gaming sector. Jisalo noted that the FG “will do all within its statutory powers to ensure the gaming industry remains on the steady path of sustainable growth and development,” while speaking at the 2023 International Gaming Conference held at the Eko Hotels and Suites, Victoria Island, Lagos State, on Tuesday, October 31, 2023. The Fund’s Executive Secretary/Chief Executive Officer, Bello Maigari, appearing before the House of Representatives Committee on Finance on Monday, November 20, 2023, stated that the Fund, in 2023, generated N2.5 billion, noting however that the entire sum had been spent in the execution of various projects across the country. The money, he said, was generated from statutory remittances from licenses and permit holders. https://punchng.com/ban-sports-betting-apps-reno-omokri-urges-tinubu/?utm_medium=Social&utm_source=Twitter#Echobox=1704301333

President Bola Tinubu has said the nation’s security challenge has improved since he assumed office.
He stated this in his New Year broadcast on Monday.
Mr Tinubu assumed office on 29 May 2023, about seven months ago.
The president said his administration has been working silently to free captives from abductors.
He said though it may not have solved all the security problems confronting the country, it is working hard to ensure that Nigerians have peace of mind in their homes.
“Since our administration took over the mantle of office, security has improved. Silently, we have worked to free captives from abductors.

“While we can’t beat our chest yet that we had solved all the security problems, we are working hard to ensure that we all have peace of mind in our homes, places of work and on the roads,” he said.
President Tinubu’s broadcast is coming about one week after armed men slaughtered over 100 people in Bokkos and Barkin-Ladi Local Government Areas of Plateau State. https://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/top-news/655590-security-has-improved-in-nigeria-since-i-assumed-office-tinubu.html?utm_campaign=twitter&utm_medium=twitter&utm_source=twitter
