Politics › Nigeria Is Moving Forward Despite Criticisms - General Gowon by Aonkuuse(op): 7:27pm On Jul 27, 2019
Gen. Yakubu Gowon (Rtd), Nigeria's former military leader, made the statement while extoling the virtues of the Act which established the National Youths Service Corps (NYSC) scheme at a Sensitization Workshop held in Abuja Wednesday.

According to him, in spite of all the setbacks confronting the country, on the face of things, Nigeria is still advancing.

Gowon said: “Nigerians should call to mind the bold step we took over 46 years ago to provide a platform for young Nigerians to play their part in actualising our vision of a united, peaceful and prosperous Nigeria.

“A world of difference exists between the NYSC in 1973 and today. We started the Scheme not long after the civil war with less than 4,000 corpers.

“Today, the current Director-General is handling about 350,000 corps members at once. That shows you the growth of Nigeria itself. Such phenomenal rise alone depicts the nation is moving forward irrespective of what is being said in certain quarters.

Speaking through Col. Ahmadu Ali (rtd), former Minister of Education and pioneer Director-General of the NYSC, he contnued: “Those of us who have served this nation and know what is going on, know that Nigeria is going forward despite the internal and external setbacks,” Gowon.

The remark comes at a time many Nigerians are criticising the government's alleged inability to revitalise the economy and to tame the tides of insecurity sweeping many states in the North and recently, the South West amid continous agitations for restructuring by the South-east and the middle belt regions.
