1. Fill a strangers tank with gas.
I know it does cost a little bit of money, but how happy would you feel if someone in line in front of you at the gas station came up to you and said, “I want to fill your tank with gas to let you know you are loved by God.” Would that brighten you spirit and set a wonderful tone for the rest of your day? It sure would mine!

2. Pay for a seniors prescriptions (a friend. neighbor, or stranger) in the pharmacy line.
So many of our seniors are on fixed incomes and when Christmas rolls around they simply don’t have any room left in their budget for any gifts or even a special dinner. Imagine their surprise when you pay and free up some of their money for a Christmas treat! This is also a good opportunity to let them know they are loved by God as well!

3. Share a Christmas Song with your Loved Ones

4. If you see a mum struggling with kids and her arms are full, offer to help.
I actually believe you should do this year round, but especially at Christmas time. Sometimes mums have a hard time accepting help when it’s offered. However, at Christmas, nerves get frazzled, kids are spazzed out on sweets and spoils from grandparents and mums could use a little extra support.


5. Invite your friends or family over for Christmas dinner.
Keep the expense low but the moment memorable and fun. The important thing is just to get together with people you love and make the day a little brighter by sharing the warmth of caring with them. Consider making a traditional Christmas dinner complete with roast turkey, or create your own traditions by branching out and making whatever you want!

Tell them the suggestion box idea is not out of place if it reflects the times we live in - Information Technology Age...

A dedicated email should be set up for receiving suggestions and a television show/media platform be put in place to confirm that suggestions received through the channel are reviewed and considered for implementation.

On weekends, I stare hunger right in the face, eyeballs to eyeballs without succumbing to it demands – I do my laundry and hangout with my PC.

Sunday, December 6, 2015 was different, I returned from Mass around 11am, reached for my PC to publish useful information on my educareer portal only to find out that my PC had ran out of power, no thanks to PHCN. I turned to sleep for respite.

Get up! Get up!! While wondering the identity of the intruder trying to cut short my sleep, I got a shocker…. A hard knock and hot, dirty slap…...I momentarily saw 7 stars and the rainbow colours. Sleep ‘jumped’ out of my eyes… not knowing what the intruder next moves will be I swung my fist in the air praying it catch the yet to be identified visitor in the face.

It turned out to be an old familiar enemy, the following conversation played out:

Intruder: How fast can your legs carry you?

Me: As fast as you can imagine…..jet speed.

Without any delay, I reached for the wardrobe, got dressed, I also took my purse with me. Within few minutes I had returned with a shopping bag with spaghetti (Golden Penny – NGN 130), 1 egg – NGN 30, Titus Sardine – NGN 150, Fresh Tomatoes, pepper and onions (NGN 200) and two sachet of Nutri C – NGN 50 to appease my enemy.

I’d spare you the steps I took to prepare the delicious meal which lasted for barely 30 mins. I downed the meal with a chilled Nutri C solution. That was all I needed to silence my enemy – Hunger.

Sometimes, we allow ourselves to be crippled by circumstances we are equipped to take charge of. Why dwell on problems and challenges you can surmount? All of my life, I am have not met a “talentless” individual, have you met one? So why sleep on your talent, problems?
Dear friend, you hold the solution to all the problems plaguing you, it starts with identifying, developing and applying your talent(s). Locate individuals, communities, demographics where your gift is in high demand, pitch your tent there, provide excellent products, services and work your way out of poverty, hunger and self-pity.

I pray God to open your eyes to the resources, talent and gifts he has blessed you with. I pray he lead you by the hand to helpers, mentors who will offer you advice and guidance required to turn your situation around for good.

Irrespective of the challenges you are faced with at the moment, “fill your mind with those things that are good and that deserve praise; things that are true, noble, pure, right, lovely and hononrable” ( Philippians 4: 8 ).

Why do we take our eyes off Nigeria to take sides with these men and parties...

Should we not focus on the Ultimate - positive development of our Motherland (Nigeria)

Should we not join hands together to develop our Nation irrespective of creed, tribe, religion and ethnic affiliation?

How long shall we continue to take sides on issues that bother on the development of our nation?

When corrupt cases are uncovered, you find Nigerians divided along tribal lines, some put up strong arguments to absolve fellow kinsmen who are involved, while others vilify those involved. Should we not focus on how the stolen monies are recovered and plugged back into the National Coffers?

In every situation we find ourselves let our focus be "How do we move Nigeria forward?"
It’s high time we focused on building the Nigeria of our dreams by ensuring that the right processes with effective controls are institutionalized across government agencies.

Body language will not stand the test of time, Process language will.

Tribalism, ethnicity and religious sentiments will not take us far, making Nigeria our focus will.

Fellow Country Man/Woman, shall we focus on a United and prosperous Nigeria... Shall we?

In theory everyone wants to be successful, in reality only few individuals are considered successful. What is responsible for this? Could it be that, “many individuals know the right thing but only few do what they should – the few who do what is right are rewarded with a Successful and fulfilled life?”.

>If you offer a service, give your customers an unforgettable customer experience.
>Keep proper accounting records for your business – Be accountable to yourself.
>Do not spend beyond your means, Keep your expenses lower than your income.

The list goes on…. As much as you can, know and do what is right always.

Two Scripture references beautifully embodies my thoughts;
John 8: 32 And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free. The truth here means the right thing, doing it sets you free… Freedom in the context of this piece means Success and fulfillment.

Philippians 4 : 8 reads, “Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable--if anything is excellent or praiseworthy--think about such things”.

So you see, being successful is not rocket science. It’s simply “Thinking Right and Doing Right”.

While returning from work around 8:40pm on October 15, 2015 I was accosted by two young men…. I stayed late at work because of a deadline I had to meet the next day, submission of a Tender on Nipex Portal.

The incident occurred at Abiola Garden Bus Stop, along Ojota – Iyana woro road. On alighting from the public bus I boarded, I sighted two young men dressed in black T-shirt. There was no trace of moonlight, the bus stop was lonely too. I had the premonition that the two young men hearts were as dangerous as their looks; In the process of wishing the thought away, my fear crystallized.

Husssh… Brandishing a sharp shining portable Cutlass… they said in a low but firm voice, “cooperate with us or get a merciless treatment” I held my two hands in the air for them to remove whatever they wanted from my pockets.

While the robbery lasted, my mind was fixed on the cutlass, just a month ago, a friend had narrated how he was robbed around Stadium Bus Stop Surulere, his phone, Ipad were stolen and he was cut on the face… I muttered in my heart… A cut from this weapon will not be a funny experience o, will they cut me… what part of my body will be affected… God save me o…

My phone contact was the last worry on my mind… its nothing to worry about.

Different people have devised several methods for backing up their phone contacts. I remember those times when I assisted my dad in copying contacts from his phone into his address book. A method I found labourious and time consuming, another downside of this method is the inability to automatically sync new contacts with the address book.

Personally, I used to backup my contacts on my PC. The process involves inserting my SIM card into an internet MODEM, then copy the contacts to my laptop via the MODEM interface. This method had 2 major drawbacks, I could only back up the SIM Contacts and it required constant repetition to backup newly saved contacts.

THE IDEAL Solution finally came through Android/Windows/IOS powered mobile phones (cloud storage). If you have one follow any of the processes described below to eternally back up your contacts (For Android – My stolen phone was android powered).

Option 1
1. Make sure that you have your Gmail account configured on your device.
2. Press the Meun button and go to Settings or Contacts, then tap] ‘Accounts and Sync’.
3. Select your Gmail account from the e-mail accounts setup .
4. Make sure that you’ve enabled the ‘Sync Contacts’ option.
5. Press ‘Sync now’ button and wait until all the phone contacts have been successfully synchronized with your gmail account.
6. Now open Gmail in your computer’s web browser and click the Gmail text link that is listed on the upper left side of the Gmail profile.
7. Select Contacts and then you should see a page where all the contacts from your Android smartphone have been stored.

Option 2
When saving a new contact, android gives you option whether you want to save the number in any of these locations, SIM , phone or Gmail. Just select Gmail.

Option 3
1. Open the contact list on your phone.
2. Hit the menu button from your contact list.
3. From the list that appears hit the import/export tab.
4. This will bring up a list of available export and importing options.

Also know that you can store your messages, photos on your Gmail account.

Don't know why you created this thread but this most is significant because our family would ever remember it.

Am still yet to recover from the shock no one told me till 27th of december. I was away from lagos, someone called to console me on the 19th of december and I didn't understand. Am yet to match her strength, she would call me and ask me what I wanted she understood me more than my parents, held our family together like a guiding spirit, may those who took you never rest. I miss your smile your care and your love. I'd say more when the day comes.

Take heart. To have someone understand you the way you have described.. its difficult to lose that person. But you have not lost her, you still have the memories and the ways her presence blessed your life. Hold on to those memories n let go of every bitterness. It is well with you.

Oluwatoyin Temidayo Ajewole was my only elder sibling.She was sweet to a fault,cool headed and accommodating. She was abt 4years older but she brought me up relating to me as her twin.She chose to be a teacher and she was good at it.You taught me how to do the things I know today....cook,dance,hygiene (she was always sparkling)you would wash my clothes ,do my assignments ....with Toyin I could be lazy because you wouldn't know.She would do hers and mine.T.Y was a church girl.Words here can't describe her plus She would have been 28this month if chronic cough hadn't taken her home at 25.

My baby faced aunty whose calls I looked forward to every month, she made sure we talked at least once in a month. I remember my first attempt at frying egg, the onions came out black and the fried egg burnt. You ate the meal as if it was well prepared and thanked me for my effort. On the dark onions, you advised that I should not over heat the groundnut oil before adding the onions on future attempts.

Mrs Olorunfemi (A.K.A Sister)
We did not exchange so many words as you always teased me about my indoor lifestyle. I recall those moments you caught me while attempting to sneak pass your house. You will call out to me “Tunde, wont you stop by to say Hi? Where are you going to? When will you stop the habit of staying indoors all the time..” I can picture that unique smile that characterize such moments.
You were a great nurse and good friend to my family. This is attested by the fact that you were on hand to rush your friend, my mother to the hospital on the night she bade farewell to earth.

Show me love, trust and understand me … I won’t ask for more. Few people have met this criteria in my life, one of them is my Ebunoluwa, my mother of blessed memory.

Thank you for the countless nights you checked on me and my siblings in bed, shared jokes with us, covered us with blanket when it’s cold. Thank you for those moments when you locked your hands in mine and poured your heart out in prayers to God on my behalf… “ God I commit your son Tobiloba to your care. Guide him in your ways, may he never be involved in an accident……..” You prayed powerfully into my future. Mum, God answered your prayers… He has been faithful.

I can’t thank you enough for the love you showed me and your belief in me, you never hid it… Thank you mum.

Maami – Ebun Theresa Rowland
Having spent about 3 months as an Industrial Trainee (IT) with an oil servicing company on Victory Island, it occurred to me that I had not made a visit to Maami’s place in Surulere. I’d have put up with her during my IT, the proximity of Lekki to my workplace made me settle for the Island.

I made the trip to Surulere and as expected I got the treatment of a King. You prepared a sumptuous meal, looked on with love as I swallowed every morsel of the Semo and Egusi soup. Afterwards, we chatted about Kabba. You made me lie on your couch and insisted I place my head on your favorite, soft pillow.

What was intended to be rest turned out to be a deep sleep…. “Wake up, wake up, it getting late and you have to set out for Lekki about now”, I looked you in the eyes and replied “I don’t want to leave now Maami”, with a smile on your face you said, “but Baba mi (my father as you fondly called me) you have to go now, at least you can make frequent visits”. Comforted by your words I got set for my trip back to Lekki.
This is a preamble to my loving Maami, Theresa Ebun Rowland.

Others.
I cannot forget the memories of Mr and Mrs M. D Olorunfemi, my lively and lovely Cousin Ranti Sesere. May your souls and the souls of all the faithful departed through the mercies of God rest in peace.

There is no trace of sadness in me as I write this piece. Rather I am thankful to God for making our paths cross and the memories we share. After all, we are all here for a moment, on a sojourn which continues in the world beyond. I love you all Till we meet to part no more.

THINKING ALOUD…………….

Late Afro Beat legend, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti coined the phrase “suffering and smiling” to describe Nigerians. Some school of thought take it to mean Nigerians are thick skinned, do not throw up in the towel etc the thought that gave birth to this piece take it to mean “Cowardice” and cowards they say, die many times before their death.

I am greatly disturbed that Nigerians put up with many anomalies and absurdities from government agencies and service companies. I call it citizen’s acclimatization to abuse. A case in mind is the outrageous electricity bills many Nigerians pay monthly for electricity units they do not consume, this has been the norm for over 10 years.

How long shall we put up with the excesses, ineptitudes of electricity service providers? How can we put an end to this protracted injustice whose pain is borne by the ordinary Nigerian?
It’s in the news that electricity tariff will go up by 40% mid November 2015. I call upon all Nigerians to join hands, heads and everything “joinable” to say NO to increased electricity tariff until all, 90% of Nigerians have the prepaid meter installed for free or at reasonable fee.

I have a lot of respect for the present government and great expectations too. Our leaders must ensure that the citizens are at the heart of policies or decisions reached by them. In this case President Muhammadu Buhari and his men should intervene by ensuring that Nigerians get the prepaid meters installed before the implementation of the new electricity tariff.

Nigerians, we must stop being slaves to government and private service providers. We must employ dialogue, information technology and other viable means to engage the leadership of government institutions and private companies who treat Nigerians unjustly.

What is your take on the proposed 40% increase in electricity tariff and how can we reach the leadership of electricity distribution companies to make our grievance known?

So recent Biafran protests have got me thinking, but I have been skeptical about airing my views because of perceived reactions.

My points are as follows:

1. According to worldometers the median age of Nigeria is 17.8, hence an "average " did not experience the civil war.

2.This is the age statistics of Nigeria as at 2014 is as follows:
0-14 years: 43.2%
15-24 years: 19.3%
25-54 years: 30.5%
55-64 years: 3.9%
65 years and over: 3.1% (indexmundi.com)
In simpler statistics 93% of Nigerians were 5 and below in 1967.

3. According to Wikipedia, youth age range is between 18-35. Hence no present day Nigerian youth saw the civil war.

My first question: since over 90% percent of us neither saw the civil war nor participated actively, and our youth were born 10 years after the war, where is all the hate and agitation from?

4. The major driving force of Biafra is the igboland, but the Biafran map includes states like Cross river, Rivers, Delta, Bayelsa and Akwa Ibom state. This makes Biafra a culturally diverse state. I am igbo and i currently live in Akwa Ibom state, and we share no similarity in custom or language. How then can we live together as "one Biafra" when we can't tolerate the cultural diversity of Nigeria.

5. The Igbo tribe would become the majority tribe in Biafra, while the others who constitute the oil producing states hence the 'rich boys' would become minority. "How can the wealth most especially that from oil be distributed, when the majority is in power and the minority have the resource?"
So therefore, a time may come when the "minority" may decide to be free, because no man wants to live in another man's shadow.

6. Igbos are generally regarded as traders, and the lifeblood of their markets like Onitsha Main market and Ariaria international market is found in Lagos seaport where most of the goods come from. In Biafra, Lagos becomes another country hence tax and import/ export levies would increase drastically and logistics would become more difficult.
The other option is to trade via the Calabar Port, Delta Port or Rivers Port at Port Harcourt, and Onne. These ports are only found in the non-igbo states, hence another potential challenge.

7. What happens to Biafrans that have their livelihood rooted deeply in non biafran states? What happens to the igbos that constitute the majority of Alaba international market?
Would naturalization take place or would they liquidate assets and return to Biafra and start afresh?

8. Finally, the question of rulership. Who rules Biafra?
Currently, most Igbo people especially those in Abia and Imo state are dissatisfied with the condition of their states. They complain of bad government, massive looting, poor infrastructures etc, and they are currently ruled by Igbo governors.
If Biafra is formed who would rule then?
I believe it would be the same people that they complain of, and as you can see the cycle of pain and complaints would continue.

Problems are fixed by inward reflections not outward projections and blame shifting.

I will answer the first question for you, “You are not Nigerian by mistake!” It is God’s plan and if you fail to play your role, fulfil your “Nigerian destiny”, you will be made accountable on the last day.

The account of the rich man and Lazarus in the scriptures (Luke 16: 19 - 31) demonstrates how sitting on the fence can land you in hell. Lazarus a poor man waited on the rich man to eat the foods that fell from his table. The rich man never chased him away but did not offer any genuine help, he simply sat on the fence! The sin of omission landed the rich man in hell.

Don’t you think the rich man was kind enough to tolerate Lazarus in his house considering that his body was covered with sore? God demanded more from him, he wanted mercy and compassion. Jesus tells us in John 13: 34 “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another, even as I have loved you, that you also love one another”. This call is greater than the golden rule which says, “Do to others what you’d have them do to you”.

Mary and Joseph the parents of Jesus took part in the head count initiated by the government of their time (Luke 2: 1-5); they did so in obedience to constituted authority and to fulfil their civic responsibility. Also recall that Jesus paid tax and urged the Pharisees to do the same when he counseled them to give what is for God to God and what is for Caesar to Caesar (Matthew 22:21) . Shouldn’t we as Nigerian citizens take a cue from this?

After 55 years of Independence, we are struggling on many fronts. Battling one monster to another, corruption, insurgency, terrorism, kidnapping, poverty, herdsmen….. all these evils can be traced to the sin of omission by “good” Nigerian Men and Women who are only concerned by the happenings within their family circle.

What happened to our failing institutions whose history transits from good to bad to worse..? I pray God to save them from the worst. Were they led by false leaders who come to kill, steal and destroy (John 10: 10)? Incompetent leaders in Christian and Muslim clothing steered our institutions to a state of comatose?

Another set of Nigerians that give me concern is the “Egunje (Bribe) Masters” who prefer to give/take bribe than do what is right. Those who give bribes do so to have an easy passage with corrupt government officials; if we do not stop this culture, Nigeria will continue her journey to “Hell”. Isnt Nigeria a miniature hell as you read this? And how do you feel to know that you have a hand in it?

There is also the “Conformist”, individuals who know what is right but will prefer to join others to do the wrong thing when faced with little resistance. Their slogan is, “if you cannot beat them, join them”. Don’t you remember the charge given by Jesus to you in Romans 12: 2 “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind”?

Nigerian Citizens must stop wishing to be European, American Citizens. Doing the right thing and asking the same from fellow countrymen; promoting accountability , transparency in governance and holding our leaders responsible to their actions and inaction's is all we need to take Nigeria from a third world Nation to a developed one.

Fellow Nigerian, I am reaching out to you to be awake to your duties as a Nigerian Citizen. You were not just created to go to school, secure a job/own a business, marry then die… There is more… Promote a prosperous Nigeria through your words, actions and deeds.

Make a decision to be a responsible member of the society by obeying constituted authority and contribute positively to causes that will improve the pulse of our Nation.

Will the Nigerian Army Crush Boko Haram by December 2015? This is the thought on the minds of many Nigerians.

President Buhari gave the military an ultimatum to bring Boko Haram insurgency to an end by December 2015. The army seem to be in high spirit under the new Lafia dole operation thereby giving Nigerians hope that the deadline is achievable. With the recent onslaught and increased bombing attacks in North East Nigeria, the Boko Haram body language do not suggest any sign of fatigue.

I am optimistic that Nigeria will win the war against terror (Boko Haram) but I do not see it happen by December 2015. My standpoint is drawn from the argument that fighting Boko Haram is an all-inclusive battle that should involve all Nigerians. The fight must be fought beyond the battlefield, in addition to guns and fighter jets must be intelligence, adoption of technology and citizens participation.

Amongst other things, there is an urgent need for a new policy on education in the north east. The literacy level of the region needs to be improved upon. Nigerians must consciously and actively support the fight against Boko Haram by being observant of their environment and provide useful information to the security agencies.

Open markets, motor parks should be discouraged and existing ones should be upgraded to “enclosed” ones whose entrances are equipped with security gadgets and manned by well-trained security agents. These should not be a temporary measure but a permanent one.

The fight against Boko Haram calls for a new and united Nigeria, we must adopt and embrace a new life style necessary for survival in an evolving world of everyday complexity. The era of “I do not talk to a stranger” must stop. All Nigerians should make effort to know the happenings within their surroundings, at least, make efforts to know who your neighbor is.

A quick example on why we must unite on all fronts; the hijab has recently been used as a suicide bomb accessory. On this account, I expect that a temporary ban should be placed on it use, better still, the short hijab should replace the flowing ones. If this happens, Muslims should not see it as a fight against Islam rather they should see it from the point of reason and without bias.

To think that Boko Haram is a problem of the North East alone is a grievous, fatal and flawed reasoning. Moreover, a bomb knows not tribe, age, religion nor colour this explains why “Johnson”, “Isah”, “blessing”, “Aminat”, Christians, Muslims, atheists and traditionalist have fallen victims to Boko Haram attacks. The recent Boko Haram activities in Kogi State, North Central Nigeria is a clarion call to all Nigerians to join the fight against terrorism. If we do not join hands to fight terrorism, you may wake up one day to find it at your backyard if not in your living room.

The only way to keep Boko Haram in check is to be ahead of them technologically, intelligence wise and through the existence of a strong bond between the citizenry and the security agencies.

Dear Nigerian,

Arise! Put on the armour of honesty, fair play and discipline. Let us collectively stamp corruption out of our land – A land destined to flow with milk and honey. If we do not kill corruption, corruption will kill us. To emphasis how corruption kills, answer the questions below:

+Have you read about a serving governor being attacked by armed robbers?
+Have you heard about a top government official unable to pay his medical bills?
+Do you know any serving politician who do not have the means to buy a generator?

Every Nigerian citizen must be concerned about government policies, the activities, actions and inactions of their representative at all levels. To take a neutral position or put up I don’t care attitude (from my view point) is the most unfortunate decision you would make in life, it also posits you as a disappointment to your generation and unborn generations. Such individuals form part of the evil men the society breeds.

Fighting corruption is critical to our future and the future of our unborn generation. It is the only known way to lead Nigeria out of the woods and place her amongst the comity of prosperous and developed Nations.

Can I have your attention for 3 minutes? I’d like to share a life experience with you.

INTRODUCTION

During my 200 level days in University of Ilorin Nigeria as a Mechanical Engineering undergraduate, I was struggling with my academics. Meeting assignments submission deadlines became a huge challenge. As a result, my class rep soon became an “enemy”, he always threatened to submit the assignments without my response and queried why I constantly delayed submission.

WHY ALWAYS ME?
Deep down within me, I knew my class rep was right. Why must I be one of those always rushing to submit assignments at the last minute? During my reflection, I discovered that I was still stuck with my Secondary School study methods which saw me go to bed between 9-10pm. While my colleagues stayed awake late to attend to their assignments, I did the opposite….. Slept.


THE SOLUTION

I reviewed my sleeping hour to 12pm and drew a plan to maximize the free hours on my lecture time table. This was the solution to my troubles. My CGPA grew from a region of 2nd Class Lower to 2nd Class Upper.

Dear Friend, at a point in life, you must consciously choose the path you want to follow with a view to achieve a better result, break away from the status quo…. What change do you need to make in your academics, marriage, relationships, and finances? Take some time to think about it…..

Often, events and occurrences which are hinged on professional conduct in the corporate world leaves me perplexed and that has led to my trying to unravel the dilemma surrounding the need to be a professional and whether or not it matters anyway. For example, if an employer is confronted with the dilemma of choosing between two (2) candidates with the same level of competence and the only difference being in their professional status i.e one is a qualified professional and the other is not. Which do you think the employer would probably go for?Simple I guess, the professional candidate would probably be the rational pick because being a professional gives an added advantage. But what about if we tweak it a bit and bring in the cost implication due to wage differential which is in favour of the non-professional i.e the professional candidate cost more to hire compared to the non-professional. So, now it’s less straight forward and the final decision is likely to be more subjective. Factors that would influence the final decision of the employer includes the consideration of the importance of the firms image/brand, the level of incentives and opportunities for fraud inherent in business activities, the level of responsibility needed to carry out the tasks, inherent risks of a business, importance attached to intangible aspects of human attributes and relationship such as integrity, trust, loyalty etc

Its therefore safe to say that a budget constrained employer would most likely take the non-professional should the cost of hire of the professional surpass his/her expectation. Basically, a budget constrained employer is an employer whose main goal is to achieve his/her target for any set budget and whose performance evaluation would be based strictly on same. The employer would have achieved his goal, especially when viewed in the ‘here and now’ context, but such perception can be deficient over the medium to long term time frame. Why? In order to explain the ‘why’ question it is important to have an understanding of what it takes to be a professional, what it means (and doesn’t mean), and the implication of the concept of a professional for the wider business operations.

What it takes to be a professional

A professional belonging to a certain body in a specified field is required to pass some specified requirements before being deemed fit to be regarded as such. Different bodies/organizations would have different level of requirements which might include trainings/seminars, examination etc, but their goal is usually to embed an individual with certain principles and values considered as critical in identifying with the brand/image of the professional body. For example, ACCA (Association of Chartered Certified Accountant) is strict about the following core values and as such it expects individuals who are designated as professionals under its umbrella to have them: professional competence, integrity, objectivity, confidentiality and professional behavior.

What it means to be a professional

A professional is expected to relate with people, generally, on the basis of the enshrined values and principles of his profession at all times and in all places. The broadness of the application of these principles would also transcend all undertakings (whether paid or unpaid, official or personal etc) of the professional as an ambassador of that profession. A professional oath/undertaken is usually signed by member of such bodies stating their commitment to observe and comply with set values and principles of their profession.

Implication of the concept of a professional in business

The implication of the professionalism concept can be viewed from the perspective of business exposure. A business is exposed to operational, financial and compliance risks and the concept of professionalism helps to mitigate these exposure. While not totally possible to eradicate the inherent risk (and overall risk) of human unpredictability regardless of trainings and exposure (including exposure to the concept of professionalism), the risk that an individual who stands as a representative (and his proud) of his professional body in his everyday activity would be less likely to fall for incentives and opportunities that might cause him to act in a way that might be damaging to his profession compared to the other individual who is not a professional.

Conclusion

An individual who has something to protect in terms of reputation/image is less likely to act in ways that might derail the achievement of corporate goal and expose the organization to business risks. This is because the individual is better equipped to handle such situations due to exposure to trainings and tools by virtue of his relationship with a reputable professional body and the painstaking requirement he/she had had to undergo before being accepted as a recognized member of the professional body. The importance of having competent and ‘trusted’ professional in a company cannot be overemphasized, this might be the difference between a business that is failing (if not dead yet) and one that is alive (and thriving).

Barely one week after securing a job, Bayo nearly lost his job to what you will call simple arithmetic. His firm was one of those supplying bags of rice to the internally displaced person’s camp in the northern part of the country. His boss had instructed him to mark up the old selling price by 5% so that tax deductions will not affect the net payments to them.

A bag of rice originally sold for 10,000 Naira. Bayo sold out 500 bags of rice at 10,500 each. This amounted to 5,250, 000 (Five million, Two hundred and Fifty thousand Naira only). By his boss calculation, Bayo incurred a loss of over 13,000 Naira (Thirteen Thousand Naira) on the transaction. The loss was deducted from Bayos salary.

The high unemployment rate among the youth is not entirely the government or tertiary institutions fault. Some unemployed graduates are best described as horses who have been forced to the river but cannot be forced to drink water. Yet they complain of thirst, some even die of thirst right in the middle of the stream – what an irony!

Many graduates are yet to grasp the essence of education, they see it as obtaining a certificate which qualifies them to secure a job and in turn puts food on their table. Listen graduate! What puts food on your table is “Applied education!” Applied knowledge!” It is the application of the knowledge obtained that makes the difference between a complete and half-baked graduate, therefore, the real certificate lies in your brain and your actions/activities.

As an undergraduate, you carried out a research in your final year as part of the requirements for obtaining a degree. The research involved identifying a problem, solving a problem, advancing a cause, substantiating a fact, complementing an existing knowledge etc

Your final year project was more than a partial requirement for obtaining a degree/certificate. It was to equip you for life after school. It tells you that to be truly relevant in the real world, you have to contribute knowledge, solve problems which may require application of the skills you acquired in the course of your academics.

If as an undergraduate you put in so much effort in choosing a research topic, you sourced the finance to construct a refrigerator, bought expensive reagents, developed, administered and analyzed questionnaires, much more is expected from you as a graduate. How many problems have you spotted as a graduate? How many of those problems have you researched about with a view of finding solutions to them? How relevant was your final year project? These my friend are the hallmark of successful people, they are problem solvers, solution finders and innovators.

The same apply to those in paid employment, you must work hard not to settle for a routine life. Always task your mind on how you can deliver your job better, faster an easier.

To be a half bake graduate is a choice. Those affected have an option to remake themselves into well and richly “baked” members of the society.

Purge Corrupt - an imaginary drug that purge individuals of corrupt tendencies.

If there was a drug like purge corrupt, I will recommend it to every Nigerian because corruption has become a norm in this clime. If you consider yourself not corrupt, kindly raise up your hand by typing “not corrupt” as a comment to this post.

One way we all can support the present administration is to join in the fight against corruption, even if it means fighting the corrupt sides of you. It will not be enough to be corrupt free, carry your friends, family along in the fight against the corrupt culture that is fast consuming our future.

We must also expose every act of corruption exhibited by our leaders, public institutions and government agencies.

I understand that 25,000 Naira is collected for passport renewal but 18,000 Naira written on the issued receipt. What explanation is there for this?
