10 Reasons I am not standing with Buhari #IDoNotStandWithBuhari #IStandWithNigeria

1. In an interview granted after he won the 2015 election, Mr. President carelessly remarked that regions where he had low votes should not expect equal treatment with regions that voted en masse for his candidacy. Was he voted President of Nigeria or President of some Nigerian States?

2. Lopsided Appointments ? It is no secret that the President consulted the Northern Nigerian Oracles to appoint his Kinsmen into key positions not necessarily on the basis of competence and merit but on ?Padi, Padi? terms ? as obtained in the old order.


3. I am yet to come to terms with Mr. Presidents 6 months delay in choosing his cabinet. Nigerians expected high flyers and technocrats; we got a recycled list of old politicians who should contribute their quota to Nigeria?s development as Elder Statesmen.

4. A majority of the current ministers are underperforming; Mr. President remains stuck with them. He is romancing and celebrating mediocrity.


5. His inability to assemble an economic team that can creatively lead the country?s economy out of recession. The methods employed by his government in generating revenue pose hardship on the people. Crude economic principles??

6. Indecisiveness in addressing the Fulani Herdsmen issue and the Southern Kaduna killings


7. Inability to address the lukewarm attitude associated with the Civil service. At the last check, the Civil Service remains an underperforming and unproductive bunch.

8. Frequent travels for medical checkup. This was one of Nigerians gross against the past government. What is the fate of the ordinary Nigerian who does not have the means to afford a meal per day needless to think process a Visa?


9. Mr. President has not dealt with corruption allegations levied against members of his cabinet.

A NATIONS PATH TO FAILURE
When a country’s citizen gang up to defend questionable government policies, they are creating a grand entrance and suitable clime for failure. They have left the path of excellence for mediocrity and stepped from light to darkness.

This reflection is borne out of the Nigerian reality. Some citizens take it upon themselves to defend government activities/policies that are condemnable, reek of mediocrity and self-serving. A development traceable to sheer loyalty, sycophancy, religious and ethnic sentiments. I tag it, “A Nations path to failure”.

A responsible citizen is one who bears a responsibility of being a “watch dog” to her representatives. Ensuring they live above board and supporting them to succeed when they are found to be resourceful, law abiding, accountable and responsible. Nigerian Citizens must learn to measure their representative’s performance against qualitative and quantitative benchmarks without recourse to sentiments, religious and ethnic bias.

#IStandwithNigeria - Calling out the Minister of Education
During my Junior Secondary School days at Federal Government College Ugwolawo, I remember an Introductory Technology assignment that required me to cut bar soaps into geometrical shapes. I'd not be surprised if the present JSS 3 students are still labored with such mundane tasks. JSS 3 students have the capacity to take on programming and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) subjects.

I offered Computer Science subject in my Secondary School; I graduated as a qualified computer illiterate. The story has not changed in government owned schools. This development is worrying for many reasons. The Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) organized by the Joint Admission Matriculation Board (JAMB) is now administered as a Computer Based Test, what is the fate of students whose first contact with a computer is on the examination day?

I am at loss why it takes a Bachelor and Master degrees for many Nigerian graduates to learn sewing, and make up ? why can't our education curriculum be reviewed to teach these skills at Junior Secondary School?

I studied Mechanical Engineering from a highly rated Federal Government owned University, during my time (2005 - 2010), a sizable number of the equipment/machines used for carrying out lab experiments were either non-functional or outdated; this development saw graphs, lab and technical reports prepared for non-performed experiments.

Dear Honourable Minister, I will not be surprised if you do not have any idea of the ratio of students to teacher in Government owned secondary schools. Have you ever considered that an ICT based solution can easily solve the dilemma? Olasunkanmi Akintoye, a 2012 graduate of Industrial Chemistry from the University of Ilorin, Nigeria and Computer Information Systems Master's degree holder from the Florida Institute of Technology developed a computer program that can meet this need. How is your ministry deploying ICT to collect valuable data required for making informed decisions and formulating effective policies?

Hon. Minister, qualitative education is the bedrock of sustainable development. Are you aware of the challenges confronting education in Nigeria? Have you developed a blueprint to tackle them? Can you please share your action plan with Nigerians?

Nigerians want to know what you are doing to deliver our Educational System from total collapse.

Hi Vislabraye, I appreciate your comprehension of the article and intelligent questions. The author agrees that Nigerians are going through alot of hardship. Its position is that the protest is not well planned to achieve any meaningful result. As such, More well meaning Nigerians should come together to put together a worthwhile protest. In hindsight, It also offers advise to intending protesters.

7 WAY TEST FOR 2BABA & FRIENDS PLANNED PROTEST
2Baba, the African Queen Crooner and one of Nigerians most successful artiste has announced a nationwide protest slated for February 6, 2017 tagged #IStandWithNigeria. The march is aimed at calling the attention of President Buhari’s change government to the untold sufferings plaguing the Citizenry. The planned protest is gaining traction with Hip hop artiste Olamide, Burna boy, TerryG and others throwing their weights behind the protest. Harmless and timely as this action seem, few questions needs to be answered before joining the march.

1.IS THERE A BETTER WAY TO PROTEST?
In a press statement released by 2Baba, he headlined the reasons for the protest under the following subjects: Education, Health, Transparency, Cost of Government, Power, Unemployment etc. These are fundamental problems plaguing the Nigerian nation. Would the protest solve these problems? An insightful and honest answer is a resounding “No”. Would the protesters present problem statements and march them with proposed solutions? Will government officials and agencies be called out to give explanations on specific issues; why certain problems exist, persist and not remedied? Is there a plan for a post protest pressure group using Information Technology as its vehicle?

Will 2Baba get artistes to boycott government organized events and influence them to sing meaningful and thoughtful songs reflecting the times and calling on all Nigerians – leaders and followers alike to contribute to the future of our nation by shunning corruption and patronizing made in Nigeria products?

Rumours have it that the planned rally has the blessings of top politicians of the All Progressive Congress (APC) Party extraction who have parted ways with the Buhari led government. If true, this may just be another ploy for our artiste to survive the economic recession.

With exception to 2Baba, which of Burna Boy, Olamide, TerryG and others have called government attention to the plight of the people through their songs? Will the protest not evolve into a musical show of sort; an avenue for musicians to shake off boredom and depression cast by the biting recession?

3.DO THE ORGANISERS HAVE THE BLESSINGS OF GOVERNOR AMBODE?
By law, Nigerians have the right to organize peaceful protests without obtaining police permit. However, it is advised that they seek and have the consent of the Governor, who is vested with the power to issue licence or permit for holding public meetings, assemblies and processions. Do 2Baba & Friends have the blessings of Governor Ambode and other state governors in states where the protests are scheduled to hold?

4.ARE YOU PREPARED TO DIE FOR WHAT YOU BELIEVE IN?
The Nigerian constitution recognizes the right of Nigerians to hold and stage peaceful protests. We must not be in a hurry to forget the Nigeria Police and authorities’ tact at turning a peaceful protest on its head through pronouncements of civil disobedience, unlawful arrest, trial and detention and killings attributed to accidental discharge. Don’t forget that a hungry Nigerian police is a wounded lion on the prowl. Should a stray bullet come in your direction, are you willing to take it in for patriotism sake?

To cite few examples among thousands; on 13th November 2016, ten people were reportedly killed by the Nigerian Police during clashes with members of the shiite Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN), during a religious procession near the northern city of Kano.

“On 22nd November [2016], a coalition of civil society organisations protested to demonstrate their dissatisfaction with the retrospective approval of 100 million Naira (about 300,000 dollars) worth of housing pensions for former Edo State governor Adams Oshiomhole and his deputy Dr. Pius Odubu. 5.IS THERE A PROTESTERS REGISTER?
If www.ekocitymagazine.com is to organize a protest against the present government, we would open an online portal for intending protesters to submit their names, qualification, address and their reason(s) for supporting the protest. The register will serve to ensure the safety of all intending protesters and to ensure that only people with good intentions turn out for the event. It will also serve as a trap for thugs who intend to cash on the protest for evil and negative intents.

During the 2012 Oil price hike protest under the Goodluck Jonathan administration, a protester shared his experience at Freedom Park where he was harassed by street urchins; he was saved by the ten thousand Naira notes he had on him. He flung it in the air to distract them and fled when they scrambled to pick the notes. In this biting recession, are you willing to part with your hard earned money and risk being mishandled by thugs and criminals?

Olamide, Burna boy and TerryG who are strong supporters of the protest have a history of attracting thugs to their concerts; the planned protest will not be different. In December 2016, at a concert held at the Eagles Club, Adeniran Ogunsanya Lagos, Olamide’s performance was underlined with broken bottles and flying fists. His presence will no doubt attract ‘street boys’.

7.WHAT ARE YOU CONTRIBUTING TO NIGERIA’S DEVELOPMENT?
Charity begins at home. Before you march bearing placards, chanting songs and pointing accusing fingers, search your conscience and answer these questions, “Do I contribute to a prosperous Nigeria? Do I consciously go out of my way to patronize made in Nigeria goods and services? Do I make a living by being transparent, accountable and hardworking? If you answered Yes to these questions keep up the good and commendable work, otherwise, go and make penance, turn a new leaf and become a “born again” citizen.

A protest of this magnitude and intention will better be staged at Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory of Nigeria. You will agree that the Lagos State government under the leadership of Governor Ambode is delivering the dividends of Democracy. Lagos State is not the best location to stage a protest against a non-performing government given that the action will hamper economic activities.

As concerned Nigerians who are at the receiving end of President Buhari’s ineffectual leadership, we would only support a well-planned protest, one bearing problem statements, proffering realistic and actionable solutions and creates a follow up pressure group employing ICT solutions.

We are not convinced that 2Baba and friends have this level of organization in place.

d primary reasons r wickedness n greediness from d employers side. D management give more emphasis on their candidates for promotion , does that worship them n do eye service .Check it out any employee that is competent on his job , don't do eye service, so when promotion comes they denied most of this employees except God did his miracle...from were I was working before , in my section , I was d best at what I do...I was by d help of God able to progress in my department n d company atlarge . But when its time for rewarding my boss n her boys will be favoured because I don't go to her house, don't go to her office to do eye service. When I confront her , she will keep giving me hope....for nine good years I was not promoted. I got another job n went to submit my resignation, that was when her eyes open n it was already late..I was begged n was offered to be promoted, I refused n I left..till today, I had that they were not able to get someone that can confidently do d job.

I understand your point of view. But you need to realize that there is politics in every organisation. Learn the robes where you are man.

Intuitive - You dont always wait to be told what to do. You take initiative.
Innovative - You suggest ideas of how to increase company profits, improve company products and services.
Creative - Improve on the company existing methods of getting things done.
Entrepreneurial - You take ownership of your job. Work as if its your own business. Take full charge and responsibility.

However, some people do all these and still do not get promoted. This happens in organisation that do not care about their staff or management that favour staff that are grounded in "eyes service". Again, some employees do not let their Manager or management know what they bring to the table, while it is not advised that you blow your own trumpet, employees must find a way to show their Managers and Management what efforts they are making to make the organisation better. Let them see your effort and the impact it has on the company.

Finally, there is politics in every organisation. Open your eyes and learn the robes. Get close to the people that matter in your organisation, the decision makers. If you put this advise to heart, your name will be top of the list of employees for promotion.

In the last organisation I worked with, I got promoted twice within a year. Not minding the recession, when people are being laid off and salaries been slashed.

Quite interesting. One thing is certain. Job Interview and getting employment is a process. For a few who are lucky, they get a job at their first interview. True. Lagos state is getting many things right at the moment.

In a recent press release by Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), the agency hinted that 13,000 Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) Surveillance cameras will be mounted at identified flash points across Lagos state, with an aim of improving on emergency response time. The approval for the establishment of three additional dispatch centers in Lekki, Ikorodu and Badagry was also announced. The existing dispatch points are located at the LASEMA Response Unit, Cappa Oshodi and the Command and Control Centre, Alausa.

This development is commendable and brings to fore the prime role of Information Technology in our world. While reading the LASEMA press release, I found myself pondering why LASEMA should consider this option ahead of security agencies in the state – Police, LASTMA etc I reached a conclusion that the security agencies can leverage on LASEMA forward thinking plan to deliver on their mandate of maintaining order and securing lives and properties across the state.

Losing valuable properties to arm bandits in traffic and snatching of handbags from pedestrians is still a regular occurrence in Lagos. In December 2016, one Aisha, a mother of two was shot dead on Ikorodu road during a robbery operation induced by heavy traffic. Motorists at the scene of these incidences look the other way in other to stay alive.

The LASEMA plan should be integrated with the security agencies for joint implementation. Like LASEMA, the security agencies should have more “dispatch” centers. The security agencies can afford intelligent dispatch that allows fluid positioning to areas of dense traffic given that criminals lurk in the wilderness of dense traffic.

Another possibility is improvement of traffic monitoring, given that smart cameras are Internet Protocol (IP) enabled, designated LASTMA officials can use the cameras to monitor traffic situation on busy routes. These can also be extended to Lagosians who are willing to pay a certain fee to have access to live camera’s to monitor traffic condition along their route. The State government should consider partnering an app development company on how to build and generate revenue from a traffic monitoring app.

The cameras can also be used to instill a sense of discipline in Lagos motorist who sometimes ignore traffic lights. These traffic light violators commit the crime repeatedly because they are not being penalized; promoting a culture of abuse and lawlessness. The CCTV can be used to capture number plates of traffic violators and their information passed to nearest security agency for action. Besides being punished and fined, these violators should be made to face public trial to serve as deterrent to the general public.

www.ekocitymagazine.com (a 100% Lagos focused news platform) is putting these ideas forward on the premise that the Ambode government is a listening and forward looking government as evident in the ongoing and executed projects by the administration. Lagos is undoubtedly enjoying commendable infrastructural development under the Ambode led government.

The CCTV project, if properly planned and implemented will not only improve response time to emergencies, it will create safer roads, jobs, increase revenue generation and aid traffic monitoring.

The acid test for the implementation of the CCTV installation project will be the quality of cameras used, expertise and experience of project contractor. Post project maintenance and protection of cameras from theft and vandalisation; and optimization of the gadgets by the appropriate government agencies.

To the best of my knowledge, no Nigerian tribe is lazy.. they all boast of reputable men and women who have attained global status for their efforts and gifts. My brother the earlier we put tribe aside and focus on building a thriving world the better. You'd agree that the author of this post was advising individuals who will not look back when offered an opportunity to travel to Lagos.

My friend once shared an experience with me, while returning from Imo state, he made a friend with a cotraveller in the Car, only to discover that she ended up in a prostitution house in Surulere.

Moving to Lagos after completing my NYSC was a natural decision. I had observed my Industrial training in Lagos and was being waited upon by my grandma to join her at her Surulere residence. Grandma often said that Lagos receives an influx of new dwellers daily. This was confirmed in a statement made by Governor Akinwunmi Ambode, where he stated that 2064 immigrants find their way to Lagos daily.

Described as no man’s land, a land of opportunities and the commercial nerve center of Nigeria; Lagos is a top destination for individuals in search of greener pasture. A sizeable number of my University and Secondary school mates ply their trade in Lagos. Little wonder, some school of thought argues that every Nigerian family has representation in Lagos.

Having lived in Lagos for 7 years, I can confirm that Lagos holds a lot of opportunities and promise but it is also important to state that the type of opportunities available varies and depends on individual’s skillset. At every moment, there are thousands of nanny, factory worker, receptionist, driving, sales girl and housemaid openings. These jobs pay between 20,000 – 35,000 Naira. The same cannot be said of high paying jobs with organizations’ like Chevron, Addax, Shell, Mobil, Diamond Bank etc

Are Lagosians really better off than their kinsmen living in other Nigerian towns and villages? A Lagosian who earns a monthly salary of 60,000 Naira is no better than a Non-Lagosian who earns a salary of 20,000 Naira in other Nigerian towns and villages; not factoring the stress and sweat endured by the typical Lagos worker. It is therefore safe to conclude that some Lagosians are stuck in Lagos to avoid the shame and taunt of moving back home with “nothing”.

Before you make up your mind to migrate to Lagos in search of greener pastures, bread and butter, milk and honey, you need to ponder and consider the following:

WHY ARE YOU MOVING TO LAGOS?
What do you intend to achieve in Lagos? Many individuals move to Lagos without having answer to the all-important question – “Why are you moving to Lagos”. These individuals have the false belief that life is sweeter in Lagos than other locations in Nigeria. While it is correct to say that opportunities abound in Lagos, the skills and proficiency levels of individuals are important pointers to the level of success they can achieve.

WHAT SKILLS DO YOU POSSESS?
How proficient are you in doing the things you know how to do? Are you a professional in your trade? It is important that you attain a level of expertise before “rushing” to compete with legions of people providing the same service. Moreover, it is not advisable you relocate to Lagos just for the “prestige” of living in Lagos. Will living in Lagos make a positive difference on your career, business and income?

HOW MUCH SALARY ARE YOU OFFERED?
For those who are offered employment in Lagos, it is important you consider the job location, pay and your residential location before jumping at such offer. This is more important when you currently have a job at a location outside Lagos. Your current job may hold more promise, peace of mind and profit than a Lagos job. Consider your options before taking a decision.

Lagos is a destination for acquiring certain skills owing to its status as most industrialized state in Nigeria, it is not out of place if you are Lagos bound to acquire a skill. At the end of such training, it may be wise to choose a non-Lagos location to ply your trade. The decision to remain in Lagos or not is yours to make.

For those who are stuck in Lagos and ashamed to try another location or return home, I’d advise you to explore other alternatives.

In the end, determination, focus, willpower, strong commitment levels, effective communication and good interpersonal skills are important values needed for survival in any environment. If Lagos is your choice, I wish you the best.

Can someone tell me “MASS GRAVE” is a movie and not reality? These scenes are well cut for a horror bestseller. A city turned into mass graves with millions of inhabitants buried alive. Some buried up to the knee, waist while others buried to their neck. I look on helplessly, unsure of what to do. Caught between rescuing the victims, staying safe from the executioners and finding out who these heartless humans are. As I entertain these thoughts, I feel uneasy, my feet heavy.

Face to face with the unmasked Marksmen, I am determined not to go down easily without giving a fight. This piece is one of my arsenals for survival, a cry to individuals, inhabitants and passerby’s who are yet to be buried alive, those half buried and half dead; a bid to rally them to form an army. Can we fight? Can we escape the trap? Can we live wholly again and rescue those at the point of death?

Anger and sadness well up as I play back heart wrenching scenes. In February 2015 Professor Ahmed Mustapha Falaki a Professor of Agronomy and Director Institute of Agricultural Research (IAR) of Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) Zaria and also former Country Director of the SASAKAWA Project in Nigeria lost his life in controversial circumstances to a Police Officer and mobs in Fala village of Tudun Wada LGA, Kano State. He was said to be mistaken for a Boko Haram Terrorist, even when he produced his ABU identity Card and Driver’s license for identification.

In another scene, an officer of Nigeria’s secret police, the State Security Service (SSS) was caught on tape at a public function polishing the shoes of Abdulrahman Dambazau, Nigeria’s Minister of Interior. An indication of the unfortunate abuse perpetuated by supposed leaders. One is not unawares that some politicians and men of authority unlawfully assign security personnel to their girlfriends and concubines who make them wash their undies and perform other unsavory tasks. These are men and women commissioned to maintain law and order in the society and charged to protect lives and properties.

On Friday, December 23, 2016 Grace Onaivi left her school, Kogi State University for Lokoja, the state Capital to celebrate the Christmas and New Year holidays with her family. She answered her father’s call about 5pm the same day assuring him of her safe arrival to Lokoja. Grace did not get home, her decomposing corpse was found on Thursday, December 29, 2016; legs, hands, eyes and mouth tied. Hindsight tells me that a properly trained and equipped police will have rescued her alive.

It’s an impossible task to outline the evils carried out on Nigerian soil on a daily basis. I dug into the history books to find out how we got here; a quest to know if we ever got it right in the past and attempt to identify where we derailed. My findings revealed that Nigeria never got it right from independence. My heart bleeds to know that the foundation of our nation stand on faulty and shaky grounds.

The leading actors have failed to salvage a dying Nation. A tale of one step forward, several steps backwards. Actors propelled by greed and self-centeredness instituted a culture of mass graves, they have not stopped digging. A situation that made it impossible for them to manage the events and circumstances that lead to the civil war. At the wake of oil discovery, they moved to Oloibiri, Niger Delta, they began digging mass graves for the inhabitants. Today the Nation battles Marksmen tagged Fulani shepherds and cattle rustlers. At every turn, Mass Graves are being dug, citizens buried alive.

The life expectancy of Nigerians (Male 53.4, female 55.6) and every measure of economic stability of the Nigerian nation maintains a steady decline. Who will think that the exchange rate of the Naira to the Dollar was N1.00 to $1.53 in May, 1977 but today (2017) it is approximately N315 at official rate and N490 at the parallel market. A trend that alludes to the success of the marksmen and their strong determination to make Nigeria a hell for the citizenry.

The Nigerian citizens have not fared better. They have largely fallen for the ploy of the con men, divided along religious, ethnic and political lines. Accepting a fate of poverty, injustice or at best swearing allegiance to the powers that be and joining them in the harvest of death.

We, Nigerians, are not oblivious of our problems. Evil men veiled as leaders will stop at nothing to divide and loot this country to nought.

Are there still sane Nigerians on the Nigerian soil? Where are you? Can we get elected leaders, our representatives to halt this pogrom? How many deaths are too many to get us to think, unite, resist and fight (if need be)? Must we wait for the next harvest of deaths? How many deaths are too many? 180 million?

To the government of the day, if the efforts put at silencing the Biafran agitators are committed to ensuring good governance at all levels, the agitation will have long died a natural death. I call on the Buhari administration to rethink the idea of tasking one man with three ministries – Power, Works and Housing.

My final advice to the Buhari administration is to commit to appointing qualified persons to occupy the available portfolios. What will it benefit our nation to have incompetents occupy critical government positions; individuals with questionable antecedents who have not shown themselves worthy in character, knowledge and ability? Should we sacrifice competence and merit for mediocrity on the grounds of tribal, ethnic and party affiliations?

My message to those sponsoring and nurturing a culture of bloodshed in Nigeria and attempting to create an artificial heaven and safe haven for themselves and members of their families; what goes around comes around. You will someday be visited by misfortune, die humiliating and excruciating death, here on earth and in the hereafter. The deaths you fertilize and catalyse will not go unrewarded. No solution and immunization has yet been found for cardiac arrest, mysterious and disastrous ‘gifts’ brought by Karma. You may laugh now but I can assure you it will last only last for a time.

I choose my fights carefully and remain undeterred by the obstacles placed on my path and those of fellow Nigerians. Armed by the truth, common sense and goodwill for the citizenry, I will not relent in my efforts to contribute to a better Nigeria and urge all well-meaning Nigerians to tow the same path.

I pray that the good hearted Nigerians triumph in the end. Evil may last for many years; the truth will overtake it someday. As long as we breathe, we must keep hope alive and commit to a better and prosperous Nigeria.
