President Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday in Abuja received briefing from the Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen, Tukur Buratai, on the happenings in the Nigerian Army as well as latest security situations across the country.

Speaking to State House correspondents after the closed door meeting, Burutai said he was duty bound to regularly brief the president on the activities of the Nigerian army.

Buratai reassured that the Nigerian Army would continue to collaborate with other security agencies to safeguard lives and property as well as protect the territorial integrity of the country.

He said the recent deployment of a battalion of soldiers to Birnin Gwari, Kaduna State, was in line with the Army’s guidelines.

“We will continue to operate along with other security agencies that have been charged with the responsibility of securing our country.

“The deployment of a battalion to Birnin Gwari in Kaduna state is in line with the Nigerian Army’s order of battle that was approved in 2016 and we are going to implement all the directives of our Commander in Chief, in order to achieve strategic objectives of the Nigerian government.

“So that is essentially why we had to deploy a battalion there and the soldiers will work alongside other security agencies,” he said.

On the ongoing fight against Boko Haram insurgency, Buratai disclosed that the Nigerian army had since commenced the construction of network of roads within the Sambisa forest to further consolidate the gains being recorded in the battle field.

Buratai also reiterated the determination of the Nigerian army to turn the Sambisa forest into tourist and relaxation centres.

“That is progressing very well and Nigerians should be rest assured that our Operation Last Halt will further consolidate on the achievements so far made and we hope the Internally Displaced Persons in that area will go back to their communities and pick up their lives again.”

President Muhammadu Buhari has sent his greetings and best wishes to Muslims in Nigeria and across the world as they commence the 30-day Ramadan fast.

In his message to the nation on the beginning of the Ramadan, the President stated that fasting was not just merely meant to stay hungry or thirsty, but an opportunity to strive for inner purification and self-accountability.

“It is meant to inculcate righteousness and discipline,” he said in a statement issued by his spokesman, Garba Shehu.

Buhari enjoined fasting Muslims to increase their love for humanity, acts of charity, kindness, generosity and gratitude.

“He says the Holy Prophet Muhammad used to spend very generously on the poor and the needy during this period, and urges Muslims in the country and all over the world to copy the good example.

“He calls on Muslims and all Nigerians to always remember men and women who are less fortunate than themselves and to help the government in confronting the challenges facing the nation.

“The President prays Allah to grant all Muslims the strength to successfully complete the fasting period”, the statement added.

Unidentified gunmen have killed the manager of a plant owned by Nigeria’s Dangote Industries Limited in Ethiopia on Wednesday after he was attacked in the restive Oromiya region while returning to the capital from the factory, officials said.
Oromiya, which surrounds the capital Addis Ababa, was plagued by violence for over two years, largely fueled by a sense of political and economic marginalisation among its young population.

Hundreds died in the violence that was triggered in 2015 by demonstrations over land rights, before they broadened into rallies over freedoms that spread to other regions.

“The company’s director died following an attack by unknown gunmen that took place while returning from the factory alongside two company employees,” a government statement said.

“Security forces are currently pursuing the assailants,” it added.

The statement called on residents in the area to help gather details.

Representatives of the company in Nigeria were not immediately available for comment.

It was not immediately clear whether it was the company’s country representative or the plant manager who died in the attack.

During the unrest, some vehicles belonging to the firm were torched by protesters.

Company heads have been in discussions with the region’s authourities to boost employment opportunities.

The plant – Ethiopia’s largest cement producer – was inaugurated in May 2015.

The country remains under a state of emergency imposed in February, a day after prime minister Hailemariam Desalegn resigned.

Former army officer Abiy Ahmed has since replaced him.

Since taking over amid the unrest that threatened the ruling coalition’s tight grip, Abiy has vowed “a new political beginning” including more democratic rights.

Thousands have been released since January, including journalists and dissidents who have been jailed for a variety of charges including terrorism.
