Romance / Ekpe Akpove: Wedding Pictures Of The Man Who Married 2 Ladies In Delta State by AprokoGirl: 6:56am On Aug 16, 2021
Update: 34-year-old Delta man marries two women same day, says "Solomon the wisest king in the Bible had many wives"

A 34-year-old fish farmer, Ekpe Akpove from Igbide in Isoko South Local Government Area of Delta State married two wives on Saturday, August 14.

The traditional ceremonies took place at the respective homes of the brides. A wedding reception is held at the groom's father’s compound.

Speaking to the Punch Akpove said he met his first wife, Okoro Oghenekomeno in 2008, the second one, Maro in 2010 and has been dating them since then.

"I love them both equally and that is why I have decided to get married to them. They both have three children each for me. So, I had to do the right thing and pay their bride price and be married to them legally. My firstborn is 11 years old; fortunately for me, my wives usually give birth within the same period," he said. Read excerpt of the interview below:

Asked if he opened up to both ladies that he was dating them same time, he said;

"Yes, at the very beginning. When I started dating the other, I hid it from my first woman because no lady would find out that her partner was having an affair and not feel hurt about it. Eventually, she found out and I didn’t deny it.

"I told her the truth, and by then I had already rented an apartment for the second (wife) because I was already living together with my first wife, and I wanted to make sure I avoided clashes between them."

"When my first woman found out about my affair, there was nothing she could do, because she was already pregnant for me. All I had to do was apologise to her, and thank God she forgave me. That was how I was able to make them meet and know each other."

On how he handles his wives when they have misunderstandings, he said;

"Women will always be women. Thankfully, they don’t get into physical fights, and they usually have arguments which I believe is normal. As the man of the house, I always sort out their differences, and also I have friends who can talk to them and they listen."

On how he plans to take care of his wives, he said;

"Before now, I had been taking care of them; I will continue the same way I have always been doing. They have been with me for a long time and none of them has ever complained; that means I am doing my best, if not, they would have left me."

Asked why he married 2 wives even though Christianity does not encourage polygamy, he said;

I will ask you a question: How many wives did Jacob have? He had two wives. Even Solomon, the wisest king in the Bible, had many wives. I have never seen anywhere in the Bible where it is written that it is a sin to have more than one wife. As long as you can take care of the children and the wives, that is what God wants. I am happy with my family.

Properties / Fire Razes School, Hotel In Akwa Ibom (Pictures) by AprokoGirl: 6:40am On Aug 16, 2021
Dignified Palace Hotel, Uyo and Annang Secondary Commercial School, Idung Esimuk, Odoro Ikot in Essien Udim Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State were on Saturday gutted by a mysterious fire.

Several property in both facilities including items belonging to guests were destroyed in the inferno.

It was gathered that the fire started from the top floor of the hotel but no life was lost in the incident.

Meanwhile, the Manager of the hotel Emmanuel James, expressed shock at the incident, saying there was no power supply and the hotel’s generator was off as at the time of the incident.

Similarly, the Annang Secondary Commercial school located in Idung Esimuk, Odoro Ikot in Essien Udim local government suffered same fate yesterday.

It was gathered that the strange fire destroyed school documents, buildings and other property estimated to be several millions of naira.

The Proprietor of the school, Rev. Joseph Ada who spoke with newsmen on Saturday said he rushed to the school on getting the information about the fire incident, adding that by the time he got there, the fire had become uncontrollable.

Ada said, “I was at home that night when I received the unfortunate news and before I could rush down to the scene, it was already late to control the fire. Some concerned neighbours had tried to quench the fire when it started before my arrival but their efforts proved abortive as the flame kept increasing.

“When I arrived, I was helpless as I was confused on what to do at that point because that fire could only be controlled by fire fighters and the only Fire-Fighting Station we used to have in Essien Udim was attacked and burnt during the recent crisis.”

He described the fire incident as a mystery, because the school has no electricity connection or generating plant, adding that they always hire generating set whenever the need arises, wondering what would have caused such an inferno which has wrecked so much havoc on the school.

Mr Ada who is also the Chairman, National Association of Private Schools, Essien Udim Chapter, said that the inferno has rendered both the teachers and students of the school helpless as the September 2021 resumption date in Akwa Ibom State approaches

He, therefore, appealed to both Local and State governments, corporate bodies as well as public spirited individuals to assist him reconstruct the school which he said has been a source of livelihood to him and many others and a citadel of learning in the locality.

“I am pleading with our governor, Udom Emmanuel, to come to my aid in the spirit of ‘Dakkada’ so that I can reconstruct the school before the next academic session in September. Let the governor through our amiable Commissioner for Education come and see things for himself.

“Here, I am left with nothing except God. Everything I had in this school has gone. Both classrooms and administrative blocks have been razed and all documents completely damaged, destroyed and burnt to ashes,” the Proprietor lamented.

He called on parents and guardians to remain calm as the management is doing everything possible to ensure that their students resume in time despite the fire incident, adding that the school remains the top choice for parents who wish to give their wards qualitative education.

A staff of the school, Mr Emmanuel Akpan, who spoke with newsmen also pleaded with the governments at all levels and organisations to support the proprietor to rebuild the school which he said has helped put food on the table of many and also provided education to children in the community.

“As you can see, candidates who are writing NECO and WAEC now are stranded as there is no hall for them to use,” Akpan lamented.

Politics / Fuel Price: Again, FG Rejects Govs’ N380/Litre Proposal by AprokoGirl: 7:28am On Aug 14, 2021
Barely three months after the Federal Government turned down the recommendation by the Nigeria Governors’ Forum for an increase in the price of Premium Motor Spirit, popularly called petrol, the Federal Government again on Friday reiterated its stance, insisting that no decision on the adjustment of petrol price would be reached until the ongoing negotiations with the organised labour were concluded.

The Federal Government had first, on May 21, rejected the governors’ recommendation of shooting petrol price up to between N380 and N408.5 per litre and removing fuel subsidy.

The governors’ advice was based on the report of its committee chaired by the Kaduna State Governor, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, seeking the full deregulation of the oil sector.

El-Rufai, while presenting the report of his committee to the NGF, explained that the current subsidy regime was unsustainable because smugglers and illegal markets in neighbouring African countries were the beneficiaries.

But the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Chief Timipre Sylva, in a statement, said the current petrol price of between N162 and N165 per litre would stay.

Sylva said the current price would be retained until the ongoing negotiations with the organised labour were concluded.

He said, “Once again, it has become necessary to assure Nigerians that despite the huge burden of under-recovery, the Federal Government is not in a hurry to increase the price of Premium Motor Spirit (petrol) to reflect current market realities.

“The current price of petrol will be retained in the month of June until the ongoing engagement with organised labour is concluded.

“This clarification becomes necessary in the light of recent reports regarding the resolution of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum to increase the pump price of petrol.”

Sylva also asked oil marketers not to engage in any activity that could jeopardise the “seamless” supply and distribution system of the commodity.

Despite the Federal Government’s initial stance, oil marketers under the aegis of Petroleum Products Retail Outlets Owners Association of Nigeria, on Friday, demanded an immediate end to fuel subsidy in line with the state governors’ recommendation of May.

The President of PETROAN, Dr Billy Gillis-Harry, insisted that oil marketers’ position that fuel subsidy should be stopped remained.

“When it (fuel subsidy) is stopped, the prices of petroleum products will be determined by market forces and this will create competition and lead to an increase in product availability,” he argued.

Gillis-Harry asked the Federal Government to listen to the governors’ call, especially now that the country was grappling with funding challenges.

However, the Federal Government reiterated its stance of May, stating that no decision on the adjustment of petrol price would be reached until the ongoing negotiations with the organised labour were concluded.

The Special Assistant on Media to the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Garba-Deen Muhammad, stated that he would re-echo the position of his boss, Sylva, who had earlier stated the position of the Federal Government on the matter.

Muhammad said people were free to make analyses and recommendations but stressed that the government’s position on petrol price had not changed.

He said, “The truth is that the key component for us to make the decision is basically for us to have a consensus with labour. So regardless of what the governors or anybody else is saying, labour is the key partner in this project.

“The negotiations with labour officials are ongoing. A decision will not be reached until the negotiations are over. So anybody can say what they want.”

He added, “The fact is that the labour represents the Nigerian people and the government is working with the Nigerian people. So it is a cardinal objective that the labour is carried along.”

Asked when the negotiations would possibly be concluded, Muhammad stated that the deadline was not completely dependent on the Federal Government.

“People can make their analyses and arrive at whatever proposals, but at the end of the day, a consensus has to be reached and in that consensus, the labour is a major voice and key partner,” he said.

Sylva had also during a recent briefing stated that the government would not discontinue petrol subsidy until its negotiations with the labour were over.

Although Sylva admitted that the burden of petrol subsidy was humongous, he insisted that negotiations with labour were a cardinal factor, stressing that the parties in the talks would soon resolve the concerns.

He said, “Of course, everybody would have their perspective, but from where I sit, I believe that subsidy removal is the best thing for Nigeria, not just for the industry. Discussions with the stakeholders are still ongoing.

“I’ll also bring to your attention that when the President assents to the Petroleum Industry Bill, subsidy issues will become a matter of law because it is already in the PIB that petroleum products will be sold at market-determined prices.”

The Petroleum Industry Bill was passed by the 9th National Assembly on July 1 after over a decade of legislative rigmarole.

The PIB contains five chapters, including governance and institutions, administration, host communities development, petroleum industry fiscal framework and miscellaneous provisions in 319 clauses and 8 schedules.

The National Assembly had in 2018 passed a harmonised version of the bill, but the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd), refused assent to it due to “legal and constitutional reasons.”

As of March 2021, fuel subsidy was costing the government up to N120bn per month based on the average daily consumption of around 60 million litres of petrol, according to the Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, Mele Kyari.

Also, according to an analysis by Reuters in April, subsidy cost around N10tn between 2006-2018 – more than the budget of any of the health, education or defence sector.

When contacted on Friday, the Spokesperson for the NGF, Abdulrazaque Bello-Barkindo, said, “I cannot comment on any issue that has not been collectively discussed and agreed upon by governors.”

Oil marketers back governors, renew call for fuel subsidy removal

Meanwhile, oil marketers including the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria on Friday backed the governors by calling for the complete removal of fuel subsidy.

The oil marketers stated that the rise in the landing cost of petrol had further highlighted the need to put a stop to petrol subsidy.

On Monday, The PUNCH reported that the landing cost of petrol imported into Nigeria had increased to a new high of N249.42 per litre on the back of high global crude oil prices.

The further rise in the landing cost of petrol means increased subsidy as the pump price of the product remains between N162 and N165 per litre.

Speaking with Saturday PUNCH, the National Public Relations Officer of IPMAN, Chief Chinedu Ukadike, insisted that petrol price should be determined by market forces.

He said, “In a deregulated sector where subsidy is completely removed, the forces of demand and supply drive the market. There are no institutions that determine the prices of petroleum products in such a deregulated sector or fix the price of the products.

“It is important that the forces of demand and supply should drive the prices of petroleum products in the country, whereby you can be able to buy products from your local refinery and go to your local filling station and sell it.”

Ukadike, however, said the subsidy should be removed in a way that it would not inflict hardship on the consumers.

“IPMAN supports the removal of subsidy, but this should be based on the provisions of the PIB so that marketers and consumers will not suffer hardship,” he said.

“Also, in doing this, we should ensure indigenous production of refined products,” Ukadike added.

The Group Managing Director, Rainoil Limited, Dr Gabriel Ogbechie, had also recently said the country might end up spending N2tn on petrol subsidy this year.

Ogbechie, who spoke at the Nigeria History Series of the Centre for Values in Leadership, lamented the lack of deregulation in the downstream sector.

He said, “The biggest elephant in the room today as far as the downstream is concerned is the failure, so to speak, of the government to deregulate the downstream. Fixing the prices at which petroleum products are sold, I believe, is very seriously harmful to this economy.

“Petrol is being sold for between N162 and N165 per litre. I believe that petrol is being subsidised with at least N100 per litre. If you look at the national consumption of anything between 60 and 80 million litres per day, we are spending about N8bn every day just to subsidise one product.”

Petrol subsidy, which was removed in March 2020, resurfaced earlier this year as the government has left the pump price of the product unchanged since last December despite the increase in global oil prices.

Just as the oil marketers, the state-owned oil company, NNPC, had repeatedly kicked against the continuation of subsidy, but stated that it was awaiting the outcome of negotiations between the government and labour.

FG must divest from refineries after rehabilitation, PENGASSAN insists

Meanwhile, the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria has said it will not support the sale of the nation’s refineries.

But the union added that it would insist that the Federal Government divested its interests and allows the private sector to run them after their rehabilitation.

Speaking at a security awareness programme organised by the union in Abuja on Friday, the PENGASSAN National President, Festus Osifo, stated that his association would carry out advocacy for private sector management of the refineries.

He stated that the government could also adopt the public-private model adopted for the Nigeria Liquified Natural Gas Ltd, in which the Federal Government holds minority 49 per cent shares against the 51 per cent by the private sector.

Osifo said, “PENGASSAN has never advocated that refineries be sold. What we have always advocated is that there should be a public-private partnership in such a way that the government will not be involved in the day-to-day running of the refineries.

“Why is the Federal Government not exploring the possibility of adopting the LNG model where the government holds minority 49 per cent while the private sector will take 51 per cent? That model has worked very well.”

Speaking on the ongoing rehabilitation of the refineries, he stated, “PENGASSAN welcomes the rehabilitation of the refineries. Our advocacy, once the rehabilitation work is complete, will be to call on the government to divest from the refineries and allow the private sector to run all of them.

“If we were to sell the refineries the way they are, they will be sold as scraps. If the government fixes the refineries and then divests, the money that government will get will be reasonable.”

He disclosed that while PENGASSAN had never opposed deregulation, it would not support a deregulation policy hinged on importation.

“That is why our position to support the rehabilitation of the refineries is justified. Nigeria will be ripe for full deregulation when the three refineries in the country are fully rehabilitated and are functioning under the efficient private sector.

“With the refineries coming on stream in the next few months and with the Dangote refinery coming on board as well, Nigeria will soon be self-sufficient in refined petroleum products,” Osifo said.

Osifo, a staff member of Total Nigeria Plc, argued that the Petroleum Industry Bill could be amended to reflect the five per cent demanded by the oil-producing communities.

He added, “For us in PENGASSAN, three per cent of operating expenditure is a good place to start. Let the bill be signed to end the uncertainty that shrouded the petroleum industry. The host communities can then seek an amendment.

“In my rough estimation gotten from the expenditure of the oil companies in the last one year, three per cent translates to about $45m (N18.5bn). The most important thing is how the fund will be administered.”

Politics / Nnamdi Kanu’s 'Abduction' Bears Semblance To Kidnapping Of Umaru Dikko In 1984 by AprokoGirl: 6:30am On Aug 05, 2021
How Nnamdi Kanu’s alleged abduction bears semblance to kidnapping of Umar Dikko in 1984

The detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) recently accused the Nigerian government of abducting him from Kenya.

Aloy Ejimakor, the lawyer to Kanu, who visited him at the State Security Service (SSS) detention, narrated the circumstances of the arrest of his client, putting an end to series of speculations on the place he was arrested and brought to Nigeria.

It would be recalled that Kanu was recently extradited back to Nigeria, and the unwillingness of the federal government to give details of his extradition had fueled speculations, as some platforms reported that he was arrested in Czech Republic while others reported Ethiopia, Brazil and even the United Kingdom.

The latest clarification by Kanu, through his lawyer, has generated further controversies in the past couple of days. In an interview with BBC Pidgin, Mr Ejimakor said that Kanu, who had been in Kenya since May, was arrested at the airport while he was trying to pick up an unknown person.

He claimed that the “Kenyan Government was deeply involved in the abduction, detention and ill-treatment of my client before the illegal handover to their Nigerian counterpart.”

The account by the lawyer clearly contradicts the position of the Kenya High Commissioner to Nigeria, Wilfred Machage, who at a press briefing, denied the involvement of the government of Kenya in the “abduction.”

“I want to address the allegation by denying that Kenya was involved in the alleged arrest in Kenya and extradition to Nigeria of Mr Kanu.

“The allegation is fictional, imaginary and deliberately concocted to fuel antagonistic feeling amongst the southern section of the Nigerian people against the Kenyan people.

Kenya’s Director General of Immigration Services, Alexander Muteshi, in an interview with Kenya Nation, said he was not aware that Kanu was in the country. However, Kanu’s lawyer has insisted that he was with the passport of his client which shows he was in Kenya.

Also, the Nigerian government had refused to state where and how Kanu was adopted. The Attorney General of the federation, Abubakar Malami, while announcing the capture of the IPOB leader, said he was intercepted through the collaboratory effort of security agencies.

Equally, the Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, had also evaded questions on where and how Kanu was captured.

DAILY POST contacted the Spokesperson of Kenya’s government, Col Cyrus Oguna, but he did not pick his calls.

History of abduction

Notwithstanding the back and forth between Kenya officials and Kanu’s lawyer, what is not in doubt is the entanglement of President Muhamadu Buhari with alleged abduction.

Mr Kanu’s allegations bear similarity with the failed abduction of Umar Dikko, a former Minister of Transportation under President Shehu Shagari, in July 1984.

Mr Dikko was accused of embezzling about $1billion and declared the most wanted man by the Buhari regime, who had toppled the then administration in a coup. In a plot similar to the James Bond movie, the regime allegedly worked with the Israeli intelligence, MOSSAD, to locate and kidnap the former minister.

The whole saga which was subsequently dubbed the Dikko Affairs allegedly involved former Mossad agents, Alexander Barak, Felix Abitbol, Nigerian intelligence officer, Mohammed Yusufu and Doctor Lev-Arie Shapiro, who administered the anaesthetic.

Mr Dikko was abducted in front of his house at Bayswater in London, unfortunately for the kidnapper, the personal secretary of Mr Dikko, Elizabeth Hayes had witnessed the grabbing and reported to the police.

Mr Dikko, who was sedated and had an endotracheal tube inserted in his throat to avoid him choking on his vomit, was put in a crate alongside Dr Shapiro, to ensure he did not die in transit. While the other two Israelis occupied the second crate.

Charles Morrow, Custom officer at Stansted Airport that foiled the kidnapping, in an interview with BBC, noted that the appearance of the Nigeria Airway Booing 707 at the tarmac to pick up diplomatic bags from the Nigerian High Commission in London, raised suspicion.

Also, Scotland Yard had raised a warning about possible smuggling of a Nigerian exile who had been kidnapped

Furthermore, the agents failed to tag the crates with the diplomatic tag in compliance with the Vienna Convention on diplomatic relations, which would have prevented the customs officers from inspecting the content.

17 persons involved in the incident were arrested, and according to the Minute House of Common session sighted by DAILY POST, the then Secretary of State for the Home Department, Leon Brittain, said the Nigerian government failed to use the Fugitive Offender Act, which applies to Nigeria. This means the Nigerian government could have formerly requested the arrest of Dikko.

In the aftermath of the diplomatic fiasco, the Nigerian Government had seized the British Caledonian plane and two British engineers were arrested and spent 25 months in prison for stealing a private jet.

The Nigerian government and the Israeli denied involvement in the abduction. This resulted in a breakdown of diplomatic relations for two years.

The legal implication of the forceful rendition

A legal practitioner, Rasheed Bakare, who spoke with DAILY POST, said to argue force rendition by Kanu’s legal team will be hard, because Kanu abused the privilege of bail in the first instance.

He stated that although the team could approach the High Court to file for fundamentals, the chances are slim.

“The most important thing is that whenever anyone abuses his/her bail condition, through the order the court, the authority can use any means necessary to return such a person back.

“He left the country through illegal means. The argument of the lawyer is a no go area. Even with his record, it will be difficult for him to get another bail, because he abused the privilege. The question is, who will stand for him?”

Kanu’s lawyer has also harped on the dual citizen status of his client, and has called for the intervention of the British Government.

But Mr Bakare noted that as far as the crime he is being accused of, were committed in Nigeria, his citizenship status becomes irrelevant to the case.

“We must fall back to the constitution, the constitution recognizes citizenship by birth. Since the offence he is being tried for was committed in Nigeria, he will still have to face the law in Nigeria. If a British citizen should commit an offence in Nigeria, he can be tried.”

Family cries out as bank manager absconds after allegedly killing a 10-yr-old girl while driving against traffic

A bank manager in Abuja, Ekod Koko Dan, has been accused of abandoning the family of a 10-year-old girl she knocked to death while driving against traffic in Life Camp area of the state.

It was gathered that Koko was speedily driving against traffic when she hit and killed Biola Vanessa on Thursday, June 10, 2021.

According to a source, “Vanessa was crossing the road when she was hit by the bank manager. There was traffic at the junction and she was trying to avoid it by driving against it. She was also on full speed and wasn’t concentrating because she was on call when it happened.

The little girl died instantly. And although Koko went with the family to the hospital, and dropped her contact details with them, she hasn’t reached out to the family ever since she left the hospital. Not even a phone call.

The child’s mother went to report the matter to the police but nothing has been done. The driver hasn’t showed up since that day.”

Crime / Man Suspecting Niger Imam Of Amorous Affairs Stabs Cleric To Death by AprokoGirl: 5:59am On Apr 14, 2021
A middle aged man, Jilbrin Adamu Jibrin, has been accused of stabbing the Chief Imam of Enagi, Attahiru Alhassan, to death.

Enagi is the headquarters of Edati Local Government Area of Niger State.

It was gathered that Adamu went to the chief imam’s house to inform him that visitors were around to see him outside.

He was said to have led the imam to the back of his own house where he stabbed him many times and also hit him with an object before leaving the imam to die.

The source added that Adamu was traced and arrested in the neighboring village of Batati.

Another source said the imam facilitated the marriage of Adamu to one of his two wives, and the imam had always been a mediator between Adamu and the wife.

He said Adamu began to suspect the Imam of having an affair with the wife he helped to marry.

“This is the reason Adamu got angry and killed the imam,” the source said.

Efforts to reach the Niger State Police Command was not successful as calls made to the Police Public Relations Officer, Wasiu Abiodun, were not answered.

The chief imam was said to have been buried.
