Nairaland / General / You Should Not Be Caught In These If You Are Job Hunting by aprokomania(m): 5:28pm On Jun 30, 2016
If you are a part of the 50% of Nigeria's youth that are currently unemployed, you probably have had to walk days under the unforgiving Lagos sun (and sometimes rain) to submit your CV at various organizations. However, there are some unwritten clothing rules you ought to keep in mind as you go on your job hunting spree.
1 Shoes- This is a particular area you have to look into properly. For ladies, high heels above three inches are a no no. This should be a no brainer. Consider that you have to walk far distances to submit your C Vs, any flat sole would do. For men, don't under any circumstance consider wearing suede shoes. Your best friend should be anything that can easily be cleaned with a wet rag. Remember that your shoes are the first thing people notice about you. You don't know that if you get an impromptu interview, it would totally kill your vibes if you come in looking like you used your feet to sweep the Sahara. I had a friend who went to submit her Résumé at a publishing house. She made the mistake of wearing six inch stilettos despite repeated warnings from me. She came back less than an hour later looking quite ruffled and told me she had been pursued relentlessly by the companies Mastiff; a terrible animal she told me resembled a cross between the devil and an Indian wolf. How she scaled the fence with her shoes intact is still a story she has not been able to tell me.
3 Clothes – Here you have to be able to strike a balance between comfort and functionality. I mean, it is difficult enough dressing in a way that gives you the leeway to walk round VI (seriously why are there no Molues in most parts of VI?), and yet, gives you enough respect to walk through the gates of most establishments, but when you have to do it repeatedly daily, that is pure torture. Another friend of mine learned the hard way when he decided to wear his prized suit on a job hunting spree. Walking under the blistering heat for hours left him sweating like a bleeding water bottle. That was when he decided that it was the best time to submit his CV at the headquarters of a bank in Marina. Somehow, it seemed the fates were playing a fast one on him and he was allowed in through the outer gate. He could hardly believe his luck as most of his previous hunts had him dropping his papers at the gateman’s office. It was while he was trying to navigate his way through the revolving doors that a bevy of ladies decided to come in from the opposite direction, laughing and chatting away. They were all dressed up to the nines, obviously workers in the bank, and the combined aroma of their perfume was “ visible” from miles away. As they came closer to him, the chattering on their lips dried as they looked at him in pure disgust, wrinkling their noses as if a dehydrated corpse escaped the mortuary and came to do some transactions. They went past him as quick as their stilettos would allow, making sure they stayed as far from him as humanly possible, while making a beeline for the doors. Needless to say, that was the end of his job sojourn for that day. Now, he just wears a T-shirt and jean whenever he goes out job hunting.
4 Hairstyling- Ladies, this is not the best time to wear that your expensive weavon or to try out that new braiding that just hit town. It would be much better if you keep it as simple as possible. I know it may feel extremely good to have yourself being the cynosure of all eyes due to your beautiful hairdo, but when you have to keep up the hair maintenance everyday (usually on no income, or you would not be looking for a job now would you?), the combined package of sweat, hair oils, sheer frustration and anger will be enough to tangle your beautiful hair into dreadlocks; not the nice one- the stinky one mostly carried around by individuals who have had lots of years being insane. Guys, just get a low-cut, when you get that job, you can display your inner Burna Boy and Korede Bello.
3 Must haves’- Handkerchiefs; especially if you are the sweaty type, make up kit; for the ladies, a big comfortable bag to hold all your CVs and a host of items you will carry, Vaseline; your lips will surely get dry after asking around Lagos for a job, change; in Tens and Twenties preferably for those moments when you really need to buy a sachet of water to avoid your voice sounding like a croak, baseball hat; it gets sunny you know? And of course an old trusty torchlight phone; not only to keep in touch with friends and family, but to know when its four o’clock so you can stop wasting any more time and get back home, so you can strategize better for another day of job hunting.

Business / Why You Don’t Need Money To Be Rich by aprokomania(m): 8:55am On Jun 08, 2016
To a whole lot of people, the title of this post may be confusing. This is because the general perception we have about people who are rich is that they always were rich, or that they all started out with a whole lot of cash. However, it will interest you to note that more often than not, this is not the case. For the purpose of this lesson today, we shall examine what the basic building blocks of success in business are. If I was to rename this article, perhaps it would be, “six steps to becoming rich”. Bear in mind however that this article does not promote a get rich quick scheme on making unlimited cash, but rather, presents you with a step by step guide on how you can build genuine and lasting wealth. Let’s get started.
Idea
This is the first thing everyone who is serious about getting rich ought to have. The great inventions that have shaped the development of man through the centuries all began as ideas. In the early twentieth century, the Wright brothers had an idea that man could fly, and the result of that idea is a global multitrillion dollar aviation industry. The telephone, camera, sewing machine, television, Facebook, Ogbongeblog, Twitter, Konga and Tantalisers all started as ideas in the minds of their founders, and today, the seeds of these ideas have become huge financial behemoths that rake in huge revenues. So when next you have that idea in your head, know that you have the basic seed of becoming rich. No matter how outrageous it may seem, insofar as it is capable of solving people’s problem around you it is most likely a sure banker. The process of developing business ideas may be difficult to some people but for some, it comes easily. Whatever class you belong to, I recommend one basic foolproof way of getting ideas; simply look around you for a problem affecting a lot of people that requires a solution.
Innovation
Now you have an idea, then what? What is the next step on your quest for riches? I am quite sorry to burst your bubble at this point, but at this stage of our collective civilization, it is quite difficult to think up an idea that is totally new. What that means is that what you think you can do has most likely been done by someone else somewhere. However, that should not stop you from developing your idea. This is where innovation comes in. Innovation in business simply means offering your product or service in a way that is better than what is presently available. For example, in times past, the only way humans knew to shop was to go to an open market which was usually crowded and rowdy, someone thought it would be better if instead of markets we could shop in well-designed comfortable malls and supermarkets, and that became a trend, for a while though, and with the advent of the internet, it became possible through a single persons idea to order stuff you need directly from your home; online shopping became the trend, and is still the hot thing now. Recently I heard about a store experimenting with drone delivery. What could be the next best thing in shopping? Could that be your idea?
Marketing
You have a good and innovative idea that you are sure is a guaranteed money spinner. However, there is just one thing you have to face next; the big M, yes it is marketing. Many people cringe at the mention of that word but you do have to realize it is at the bedrock of all successful enterprises. This is so because no matter how good your product is, no one will buy from you if they do not know about it. The process of getting your potential customers acquainted with you product is what is known as marketing. In this digital age, you have to realize that the method of marketing is far different from what it used to be just ten years ago. If you want to succeed therefore as an entrepreneur, you must know how to leverage the opportunities social media offers in order to promote your goods. You must learn and use social media to influence your business growth, or watch your idea gradually die away.
Persistence
It is not guaranteed that on the first try your product will be an instant hit. As a matter of fact, it may take months or even years for you to be widely accepted. In the meantime, a number of business owners will get frustrated and close up shop. It is estimated that in Nigeria, only about 5% of small enterprises will survive the first five years of business. The difference between those that actually do go on and succeed is persistence. Many of the big businesses that dot our landscape did not also make it big just on their first try so if you find yourself getting disappointed in the results you are getting consistently, just keep at it for a bit longer, and your success is guaranteed to be just around the corner.
Opportunities
As an entrepreneur it is imperative that you have the ability to recognize opportunities that will be beneficial to your startup, as well as take advantages of those opportunities to improve on your bottom line. For a serious and committed entrepreneur however, you do not have to sit around and wait for opportunities. You have to go out and create your own opportunities. Create opportunities to meet leaders and influencers in your field by attending conferences and symposia. And when you do find yourself in conferences, ensure you leave with enough contacts that you might need to take your business to the next level. The most successful entrepreneurs are usually the best networkers as they utilize every opportunity to expand their business network. Be an active networker in your business community and you will see opportunities opening themselves up to you.
Breakthrough
Finally, you have followed the preceding rules diligently. It is now time for your breakthrough. You can be sure that that business that started up as a small idea is ripe for success. However, it is important that you are able to realize that contrary to what you think, success is not an event, or a destination but it is a journey. What that means is that you have to continue to be innovative and creative to remain relevant in your market.
So there you have it. Feel free to share this article with friends you care about and leave your comments below.

Nairaland / General / EAT THAT FROG. You Should Start Yesterday by aprokomania(m): 10:12am On Jun 04, 2016
Rather than being an invitation to a strange culinary experience, the title of this post is significant as it relates to the very human attitude to procrastinate. Inspired by the bestselling book of the same title by the renowned author Brian Tracy, the frog in this context is a symbol for the need to put off what we can do today till sometime in the future, knowing fully well that most times, we end up doing nothing at all.
One of the best pieces of advice I ever received was from a senior friend of mine who had at that time just finished university.
I had just gained admission then and my mind was focused on going in, getting a degree, and getting out to a good job waiting for me. In a nutshell, his advice was for me to start exploring my talents while in school, and not to assume that there was a magical world of wealth and riches waiting for me immediately I graduated. I can confidently say that I did my best to put that advice to good use and today, I am better for it.
I have come to realize many years down the line that if only we can learn to identify and deal with moments when we are most prone to procrastinating in the very little things, then we can overcome most of the biggest hurdles and challenges we find ourselves in. Below I have presented a three step approach, more of a mental checklist to dealing with this quintessential problem
RESOLVE to deal with this problem. But before you can resolve to work on this issue, you have to accept that you have a problem no matter how insignificant it may seem at the time. When you do that and resolve to deal with it, you are on the first step in becoming a more productive individual
IDENTIFY the areas of your life where you are more prone to putting things off till later. It may be in your business; you may be delaying filling your tax returns till a more convenient time (which may never come), your marriage or family; something seemingly as simple as getting that gift you need to get for your spouse, or even your health; perhaps you keep postponing your dentists visit. Identify the areas you need to improve in and move on to the next step.
WORK. This is the most important step of all. Armed with the information of where exactly you need to improve on, you need to work hard daily to overcome your proclivities to delay and procrastinate. Perhaps if you are a chronic procrastinator, you may need professional help in achieving your goals, or you might just need to talk to a friend or family member about it. You need work to change your habits ( read here ). However, do not forget, that you should identify and celebrate every success you record.
Gradually and patiently, with enough work and persistence, procrastination will be alien to you, and you would have successfully eaten that frog. There is an excellent resource I have identified to be of benefit to you in this process HERE.

Business / Four Businesses You Absolutely Should Be In Now by aprokomania(m): 7:54am On May 30, 2016
This post is primarily targeted at my readers in Nigeria. However, if you are not in Nigeria, you can still learn a thing or two from this and adapt it to your environment. That said, it is no news that the economy is taking a bad hit right now. Due to the falling prices of crude oil in the global market, prices of food and other essential commodities have hit the roof, while the income from petroleum still remains at an all-time low. On the flip side however, the federal government has proposed its most ambitious budget ever, with a plan to spend one point eight trillion naira on capital expenditure within the fiscal year. The combination of the above factors while a nightmare for most people, is an entrepreneur’s fantasy as opportunities abound in this milieu. Below, I have penned down four businesses that are sure to be guaranteed money spinners for a long while, and will do relatively well despite the economic hardships.
Crop prospecting
One of the basic requirements of every individual is food, and this is not likely to change soon. Irrespective of the economic situation, we all must eat food and it makes sense that this will be a viable market for investment. The interesting twist is that at present in Nigeria, there is a shortage of some basic food ingredients, the most obvious of which is tomatoes. The fact remains that the average household in this country cannot go a week without eating tomato or its derivatives in one form or the other. Hence, you could consider joining the hundreds of people who go to the northern part of the country and buy tomatoes in bulk, and then sell it in other parts of the country. The scarcity of the product will ensure you make tremendous profits.
Consulting
Due to the increase in the amount of money spent in the budget this year for capital expenditure, we expect that the building and construction industry will see an increase in the tempo of its activities. Now, if you are skilled at an aspect of the construction business, this is the time to focus on branding yourself in order to rake in a huge share of the largesse that will soon be on offer. With personal branding and in depth knowledge of your business area, you can become a consultant to the government, companies or individuals who will be involved in building and construction for a tidy percentage. (A free guide on how to be a consultant will be released here soon so stay tuned to get it).
Poultry production
The federal government recently revealed that with the launch of the school feeding program, about a billion eggs will be required annually to accomplish the governments set target. This is going to create a huge shortfall in the amount of eggs that would be available for local consumption. The smart agro entrepreneur would right now consider expanding in the area of poultry production with special emphasis on egg production. No matter how small your poultry is, you are guaranteed to make a good income from egg production this period.
Car sharing services
The price of fuel has today gone over the roof. Hence, it is not uncommon to see that a lot of commuters have abandoned their vehicles and resorted to making use of public transport to get to their places of work as well as other destinations. The problem with public transport in this part of the globe however is that often times, the vehicles employed in conveying passengers from one point to another, are cramped, uncomfortable and terribly unreliable. A lot of people would rather prefer to employ a more suitable means of transport. So, if you own a private car, now would be a beautiful time to put it to use. You can decide to pick up commuters going your way for a fee, and if you always ply a particular route, you will definitely have regular passengers. However, if you think it is going to be stressful sourcing for passengers, and also considering the security risks, you can decide to register on the many car sharing service sites available in the country today, for example gomyway , and watch the passengers come to you.
Look through this and share with your friends who will definitely need this information. Stay tuned to this page as we will be updating more frequently. Cheers.
