I learnt this morning that the health workers have called off their 6 days old strike after 2 days negotiations with govt. That is how it ought to be. Negotiation is a give and take thing. Please your source? The issues are simple. ASUU had an agreement with the federal government in 2009 which was not implemented. They secured an MoU with the federal government in 2010 through a strike. The MoU died no sooner than it was birthed. Now ASUU is up in arms demanding the implementation of the 2009 accord. The first reaction of the FG to this latest agitation backed with a strike was to say, ‘no, we are not aware of any such agreement since we lately came to power’! But following this, it has been instituted a series of ad hoc committees, first, to search for the agreement that had never left the dusty shelves of bureaucracy and, second, to work out a solution that was not found since 2009. This entire macabre dance has persisted because those ruling us may appear gentle but have not allowed their gentle actions to permeate their activities in government. Or else, how can we explain the drafting of politicians in the mould of Gabriel Suswan, the governor of Benue State, and Anyim Pius Anyim, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), to chair sensitive committees set up resolve the matter. But how can a prophet who has not earned honour at home seek to get honour abroad? Don’t forget that medical students of the Benue State University have been organizing a series of protests and sit-ins to persuade and/or force the Suswan administration to cough out the needed funds to provide the medical equipment required by the Nigeria Universities Commission (NUC) to accredit the medical programme of the institution. Anyim? How did he fare as Senate President to have deserved the SSG portfolio in this government and become chair of a technical committee to proffer needed and urgent remedy to our decadent tertiary education sector? Much as we urge the lecturers to continue the struggle until their demands are met to engender a progressive university system in the country, they must be wary of the use of strikes as a weapon in future. Strikes in an education sector can be likened to a double-edged which, apart from forcing the authorities to act, also stagnate, frustrate and demoralize students. They paralyse the scholarly ascent of scholars. Students are human beings and therefore must not be treated like industrial goods. Society cannot afford to waste its material resources, but a society is doomed which wastes the time and energy of its youths, represented by students. It must be noted that the minister of education, Prof. Ruqayyatu Rufa’i Ahmed and the minister of state for education, Nyesom Wike have not helped matters. While Rufa’i Ahmed seems to be flowing along praying that this strike will roll by on its own accord, Wike is busy fighting his benefactor just to land the Rivers State PDP governorship slot for 2015. Again, our World Bank genius and minister of finance Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala would rather argue that the country is broke and as such government cannot meet the lecturers’ demands aimed at fixing the university system. Her policies have never been felt by the commoners in Nigeria, despite the fact that she enjoys a heroic status in governmental quarters. She must realize that the developed countries where she was groomed were built up and managed by those who enjoyed free and compulsory education from the state. When former regimes paid scant attention to education, people said it was because the presidents were no graduates, but what about now that the president is a PhD holder. One of the most unanimous national facts is that the standard of education has been on a continuous plunge. And how can government say it cannot meet the demands of lecturers while its officials daily mystify the public with their ostentatious lifestyles. How on earth will a country that is broke spend N1billion on feeding at the presidential villa? Why will a country that is broke continue to maintain about 13 jets in her presidential fleet? Governor Suswam claimed that the issues that led to the strike had been substantially addressed with the release of N30billion for immediate release to the universities to enable them pay their staff the earned allowance while another N100billion would go to address the gross deficit in critical infrastructure in the 61 federal and state universities. What Suswan failed to give is a definite timeline for the release of the funds. One wonders if Suswan is not taking education back to pre-2009 promises before the agreement in question was signed. The question is: When will Suswam’s committee submit its spreadsheet of projects to Mr. President? When will Mr. President set up a committee to study the spreadsheet and make recommendations? When will the White Paper of the new committee to be constituted by Mr. President be approved by the Federal Executive Council? When will Mr President sign the amended White Paper and direct the minister of finance who thinks the government is broke to release the funds? From the way governance is run here, I think this is another journey to nowhere. However, ASUU was quick to reject the merry-go-round exercise, accusing government. The ASUU has accused the federal government of not being genuinely committed to revitalizing public universities through adequate funding and that it was exhibiting a ‘take it or leave it’ and ‘grab-the-crumbs or starve to death’ mentality. Again, in these uncertain times in our educational history, students must ensure that their desire to reach the heights of their talents is not dampened by the chicanery of visionless leaders. Even though the doors to their classrooms have temporarily been shut by the fight of giants, they must daily withdraw into their home sanctum, burn the midnight candle and await the break of day. They must not take the rude break in their academic activities to mean a complete break in their desire to attain lofty intellectual heights. Readers are leaders, they say. The federal government must also desist from the paralysis of waiting for industrial actions before redressing problems in the system. The government must been seen to proactively cater for the needs of citizens and not the few in public service and political positions. A situation where government rushes money to meet the needs of few individuals and institutions in the system for self preservation can only lead to unfathomable anarchy now and in the long run. It is germane to stress that students today are asking for bread but successive governments have given them stones. They asked for fish but got serpents in return. We must not fail to realize that “stones” and “serpents” could be most dangerous in idle hands. |

I think there is always a I think there is always a problem with the ways aides of GEJ and his wife respond to issues. The point here is that the deputy governor was snubbed by Dame and one expects them to simple respond "Yes or No" but saying Amaechi and his wife has not paid condolence visit to her should be left for another day. I think the aides cause more problems for these people than they can imagine. The real enemies of GEJ and Dame are their aides and not the opposition as they are made to believe. |

President Goodluck Jonathan’s wife, Patience Jonathan, has decried the failure of Governor Rotimi Chibuike Amaechi of Rivers State to pay her a condolence visit since her mother died in an automobile accident several weeks ago. In a statement released today in Abuja, Mrs. Jonathan all but declared Mr. Amaechi and his wife guilty of bad manners for refusing to express their sympathy over her mother’s death.http://mobile.saharareporters.com/news-page/governor-amaechi-his-wife-refused-pay-me-condolence-visit-%E2%80%93-patience-jonathan |
The Yoruba Council of Elders has unfolded a plan to build a community centre in London, with the name Yoruba Village. The president of the YCE UK, Bolaji Falase, who made this known at a recent press conference in Lagos, said the centre will help preserve the Yoruba culture and serve as a meeting point all Yoruba people in the Diaspora. Falase added that London was chosen for the project because Nigeria was a colony of Britain. He said, "All over the world, India has community centres, which they use to propagate their culture and traditions. That is also the reason we are planning to build the Yoruba Village in London. Apart from its economic importance, it is also a meeting point for all Yoruba in the Diaspora. "The Yoruba language is diminishing. To remedy the situation, the facility will be a meeting point where we can teach our children our language, our culture and traditions, and also eat our food." He said the estimated cost of the land for the Yoruba Village was £5m, while the construction of the centre, which will host a museum, library, offices, conference facilities, restaurant and supermarket, was estimated to cost £7m. He said while they were working towards acquiring the land, the construction would be in stages, depending on availability of funds. The President of the YCE, Gen. Adeyinka Adebayo (retd.), commended the UK chapter for its interest in the organisation and efforts towards actualising the project. Adebayo added that the project would help the future generation of Yoruba people not to lose touch with their roots and culture. |

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has assured President Goodluck Jonathan that the door of the party is open to him. The National Chairman of the party, Bisi Akande stated this at the end of the inaugural meeting of the Interim National Executive Committee of the APC in Abuja, urging Jonathan to feel free to abandon the crisis-ridden Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). The APC, he assured, is at all times ready to accommodate whoever wants to become a member. Chief Akande disclosed that the party will soon organise ward congresses where the ward executives will emerge. He cautioned those who are parading themselves as the executive of the party at the local government and state levels to desist, stressing that the APC has yet to conduct elections where such officials would emerge. Akande dispelled the rumour that a rival APC is a threat to the APC, but expressed strong conviction that a two-party system will deepen Nigeria’s democracy. |

You may be among the 45% of normal adults who snore at least occasionally or you likely know someone who does. He (or she) may be the brunt of jokes at family gatherings (“Uncle Joe snores so loudly he rattles the windows!”), but snoring is serious business. For one, a snoring spouse often keeps the other person from a good night’s sleep, which can eventually lead to separate bedrooms. “Snoring can create real problems in a marriage,” says Daniel P. Slaughter, MD, an otolaryngologist and snoring expert at Capital Otolaryngology in Austin, Texas. Not only is snoring a nuisance, but 75% of people who snore have obstructive sleep apnea (when breathing is disrupted during sleep for short periods), which increases the risk of developing heart disease, Slaughter says. Use caution before you self-treat with over-the-counter sprays and pills until you’ve checked with your doctor, says Sudhansu Chokroverty, MD, FRCP, FACP, program director for Clinical Neurophysiology and Sleep Medicine at JFK Medical Center in Edison, N.J. “Many stop-snoring aids are marketed without scientific studies to support their claims,” says Chokroverty, who is also a neuroscience professor at Seton Hall University’s School of Health and Medical Sciences. Instead, try these natural solutions and lifestyle changes which may help you stop snoring. Causes of Fatigue and Sleepiness and How to Fight Them 1. Change Your Sleep Position. Lying on your back makes the base of your tongue and soft palate collapse to the back wall of your throat, causing a vibrating sound during sleep. Sleeping on your side may help prevent this. “A body pillow (a full-length pillow that supports your entire body) provides an easy fix,” Slaughter says. “It enables you to maintain sleeping on your side and can make a dramatic difference.” Taping tennis balls to the back of your pajamas can also stop you from sleeping on your back, Chokroverty says. “Or you can recline the bed with the head up and extended, which opens up nasal airway passages and may help prevent snoring. This may cause neck pain, however.” If snoring continues regardless of the sleep position, obstructive sleep apnea may be a cause. “See a doctor in this case,” Chokroverty says. 2. Lose Weight. Weight loss helps some people but not everyone. “Thin people snore, too,” Slaughter says. If you’ve gained weight and started snoring and did not snore before you gained weight, weight loss may help. “If you gain weight around your neck, it squeezes the internal diameter of the throat, making it more likely to collapse during sleep, triggering snoring,” Slaughter says. 3. Avoid Alcohol. Alcohol and sedatives reduce the resting tone of the muscles in the back of your throat, making it more likely you’ll snore. “Drinking alcohol four to five hours before sleeping makes snoring worse,” Chokroverty says. “People who don’t normally snore will snore after drinking alcohol.” 4. Practice Good Sleep Hygiene. Poor sleep habits (also known as poor sleep “hygiene”) can have an effect similar to that of drinking alcohol, Slaughter says. Working long hours without enough sleep, for example, means when you finally hit the sack you’re overtired. “You sleep hard and deep, and the muscles become floppier, which creates snoring,” Slaughter says. 5. Open Nasal Passages. If snoring starts in your nose, keeping nasal passages open may help. It allows air to move through slower, Slaughter says. “Imagine a narrow garden hose with water running through. The narrower the hose, the faster the water rushes through.” Your nasal passages work similarly. If your nose is clogged or narrowed due to a cold or other blockage, the fast- moving air is more likely to produce snoring. A hot shower before you go to bed can help open nasal passages, Slaughter says. Also, keep a bottle of saltwater rinse in the shower. “Rinse your nose out with it while you’re showering to help open up passages,” Slaughter says. A neti pot could also be used to rinse out the nasal passages with a salt- water solution. Nasal strips may also work to lift nasal passages and open them up -- if the problem exists in your nose and not within the soft palate. 6. Change Your Pillows. Allergens in your bedroom and in your pillow may contribute to snoring. When did you last dust the overhead ceiling fan? Replace your pillows? Dust mites accumulate in pillows and can cause allergic reactions that can lead to snoring. Allowing pets to sleep on the bed causes you to breathe in animal dander, another common irritant. “If you feel fine during the day but obstructed at night, these things may be contributing to your snoring,” Slaughter says. Put your pillows in the air fluff cycle once every couple weeks and replace them every six months to keep dust mites and allergens to a minimum. And keep pets out of the bedroom. Beware before spending money on special pillows designed to prevent snoring, Chokroverty says. “They may work if it props up your head, which fixes nasal issues, but can cause neck pain.” 7. Stay Well Hydrated. Drink plenty of fluids. “Secretions in your nose and soft palate become stickier when you’re dehydrated,” Slaughter says. “This can create more snoring.” According to the Institute of Medicine, healthy women should have about 11 cups of total water (from all drinks and food) a day; men require about 16 cups. Overall, get enough sleep, sleep on your side, avoid alcohol before bedtime and take a hot shower if nasal passages are clogged, Slaughter says. “These simple practices can make a huge difference in reducing snoring.” —By Louise Chang, MD |
The Lagos State Government on Tuesday launched the new electronic ticketing (e- ticket) system for Bus Rapid Transit, BRT, buses in the state. The e-ticketing system now allows BRT users to pay bus fare as low as N20 within a stipulated distance as against the fixed fare of N70 to N120. The e-ticketing is being managed by the Lagos Area Metropolitan Transport Authority, LAMATA. Governor Babatunde Fashola launched the e- ticketing system at the BRT CMS Terminal in Marina, Lagos, Southwest Nigeria, saying that the development was to make the transportation system through BRT buses more efficient and fast for both operators and users. BRT buses: e-ticketing begins The governor, who was represented by his Deputy, Mrs. Adejoke Orelope-Adefulire stated that users of BRT buses with the e- ticket could pay less for travel time as well as make the process of ticketing more users friendly. According to Fashola, "we have over the years strived to ensure that we have very effective and reliable transportation system on the road, on water and on rail system. From the event of today, what we have done is to make road infrastructure more attractive, more reliable and more efficient for those who chose to use this service, especially those at the grassroots who will make use of this from today. "It will give users the opportunity to save, instead of paying N120 or N70, you can also buy a week or a month worth on your card depending on your travel time which is more effective and makes the process efficient and fast." He said the e-ticketing system was the first of its kind in the country, saying that the government was looking forward to attaining the transportation system obtainable in developed countries. Managing Director, LAMATA, Dr. Dayo Mobereola said the new system was being developed not just for the BRT buses but also for journeys on ferries and trains subsequently. He explained that the e-ticketing model was to make it easier for passengers to be able to travel at ease making use of this system as "it is equitable, simple, easier for collection, easy for control of operators, it is attractive to both users also for the administrators as well as the operators." This is a welcome development! |

Former Governor Timipre Sylva of Bayelsa State has furiously reacted to his successor’s reaction to a demonstration staged by pensioners to protest the state government’s failure to pay billions of naira in pension entitlements. Current Bayelsa governor, Seriake Dickson, had specifically blamed Mr. Sylva for the state’s high and mounting pension liabilities, adding that his predecessor had not paid pensioners their benefits during his four-year tenure as governor. Mr. Sylva was the immediate predecessor to Mr. Dickson, the handpicked choice of President Goodluck Jonathan, himself a former deputy governor and governor of Bayelsa. In a fiery press statement issued on his behalf by an aide, Mr. Sylva, who has been charged with massive corruption during his term as governor, said he was “sick and tired” of being blamed by Mr. Dickson for what his spokesman called the current governor’s “incompetence and failure.” Mr. Sylva also stated that he inherited some unpaid pensions and gratuities from Mr. Jonathan, adding that he went ahead to pay down much of the obligations. He questioned Mr. Dickson’s motives for setting up a panel to probe the pension crisis, calling on the incumbent governor to resign. Below is the text of Mr. Sylva’s statement: At a so-called Transparency Briefing at the weekend, newspaper reports quote Dickson as claiming that the Bayelsa State Government under Chief Timipre Sylva never paid pensions to retirees for five years. He claims further that his administration inherited unpaid pension arrears of over N4 billion. Consequently, he would like to establish a Judicial Commission of Inquiry to probe Sylva. We are sick and tired of Dickson’s governance style of always blaming Chief Timipre Sylva for his incompetence and failure. We call upon Dickson to resign now since he has shown that the job for which he was imposed on the people of Bayelsa State is bigger than him. Failing which the people of Bayelsa State should exercise their civic duty to remove him from office using all available constitutional options. Dickson’s claim about non-payment of pensioners from May 2007- January 2012 is scandalous, petty and irresponsible. This is clear for the following reasons: 1) When Sylva took over as Governor of Bayelsa State from Dr Goodluck Jonathan, there were outstanding pension and gratuity arrears, and no noise was made about it. As a leader, Sylva took responsibility on the conviction that government is a continuum. Pensioners were paid along with people still in service, promptly and monthly. Those who retired from service at the time also received their gratuity once the appropriate documentations were done. Not even Sylva’s opponents could accuse him of non-payment of salaries and pensions. By our records, the state government paid an average of N216 million monthly and about N2.6 billion per annum on pensions. 2) If nobody protested over non-payment of pension for five years, it means pensioners as well as labor in Bayelsa were satisfied with the Sylva administration. 3) Why is Dickson restricting his pension probe to the period from 2007- 2012? Why not commence from the beginning of civilian rule in the state in 1999? Why the obsession with Sylva? 4) Dickson has been in office since February 2012. In April 2012, he set up a kangaroo 11-person Financial Management Review Committee headed by Mr Ndutimi Alaibe to probe Sylva. Yet, Dickson is only just realizing - in July 2013 – that pension funds were mismanaged from 2007-2012. 5) Dickson says it has come to his knowledge that the pension thieves in Bayelsa State used the stolen funds to build hotels and buy exotic cars. Meaning that he already knows who these criminals are. So, why set up a Judicial Commission of Inquiry? 6) Dickson and his master at the top have run out of options in the schizoid attempt to ruin the political career of Sylva hence the decision to set up this Judicial Commission of Inquiry. By working to the answer, they would like the Commission to indict Sylva having failed in their previous attempts with the Alaibe Committee, and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). Under Dickson, Bayelsa State has suffered a severe governance deficit. By all indications, Dickson is interested only in power and not the responsibility that goes with the high office he was brought to occupy. Having struggled to hide his lack of capacity under the name of Sylva and seen clearly that this strategy is no longer workable, the only option left for Dickson is to resign now. May God help Bayelsa State. |

By SaharaReporters, New York Some 30 soldiers guarding the Rivers State governor's lodge have been summarily withdrawn by the Brigade commander in charge of the Joint Task Force in Port harcourt. The action was carried out on the orders of President Goodluck Jonathan, who is currently on a state visit to China. Saharareporters learnt that the soldiers also took with them two armored personnel cars usually stationed outside the government house. A military source told Saharareporters that the removal of the soldiers was done because it was ordered from Abuja. He warned that things might get bloodier in the state capital with the Joint Task Force (JTF) gone from the government house leaving the security of the governor and his aides in the hands of a few police officers and State Security Services agents. An eyewitness said a new detachment of soldiers came briefly to inspect a third APC that seems disabled. Saharareporters could not confirm further reports that the soldiers that were removed are being detained and interrogated in the barracks. |
