A former Minister of Aviation, Chief Femi Fani-Kayode, has alleged that President Goodluck Jonathan would attempt to split the country, if he does not win the 2015 general elections.http://thenationonlineng.net/new/news/2015-jonathan-ll-divide-nigeria-says-fani-kayode/ |
Governor Babatunde Fashola of Lagos State, yesterday, said 70 new roads had been approved and awarded for construction and rehabilitation in the state, even as the Nigeria Bar Association, NBA, deplored the poor state of the Federal High Court in Lagos Island, saying “it is in its old self.”www.vanguardngr.com/2013/06/fashola-approves-construction-of-70-new-roads/ |
The political chess game in the Peoples Democratic Party ended on Thursday in Abuja with President Goodluck Jonathan and the party's National Chairman, Bamanga Tukur, proving that they were, indeed in control of power. Jonathan and Tukur, deploying the awesome influence of their offices, silenced some governors of the party, who had vowed to ensure that the National chairman was booted out of office during the 61st National National Executive Committee meeting. While Jonathan boasted that the PDP must win at least 23 states during the 2o15 general elections, a more confident Tukur had a message for all the PDP members, especially governors: You must respect the President. Prior to the NEC meeting at the Wadata Plaza national headquarters of the PDP in Abuja, some governors in the Rotimi Amaechi-led faction of the Nigeria Governors'Forum had vowed that Tukur must not retain his job as national chairman. They had accused him of being responsible for the crises rocking the party. The crises which made Jonathan to set up a presidential committee formed the major plank of Thursday's NEC meeting. o Jonathan on 2015 During the meeting, the President recalled that there was a time the PDP was in control of more than 23 states, but regretted that the party had lost some of them. Challenging members to ensure that the number of states in control of the party did not go below the present 23 , he said he was happy about the formation of the PDP Governors' Forum. He said the forum was put in place to put a stop to the decline in the party's fortune and to galvanise the interests of the party before its members went for any meeting, like that of the NGF. "One thing I have to appreciate the party and especially the PDP governors is the formation of the PDPGF. It has really helped to stabilise the polity," Jonathan noted. He added, "Governor Godswill Akpabio, (who) spoke first said it all; that at the beginning, there was no need for PDPGF but now that we have reduced in number to 23, definitely, this should be the least. "We cannot shrink below this level. We must build up. So, looking at the number of PDP governors, it becomes very clear that they need to have their own thing because we have realised that governors of other political parties used to meet before coming for NGF meetings. "But PDP being the elephant among them did not really bother much. But over the period, we have realised that there is the need for them to also meet because politics is politics. Politics is a game of interest." The President also advised against defying the Independent National Electoral Commission's ban on any form of politicking for now. o Two-party system Urging Nigerians to commend the PDP for the stability in the polity, Jonathan hinged the deluge of criticism facing the party on its size. He added that it would be better to have two parties in the country in order to stabilise the polity more. His words: "One good thing that Nigerians should commend the PDP for now is that the evolution of political parties has made the polity to be more stable. "Before, when elections were coming, you would be hearing about new parties being formed and at a time, the ballot paper was becoming too long; INEC was finding a way of deregistering parties. "Because PDP has come on very strong, they (opposition parties) have realised that what they need to do is not forming new parties but coming together. So, we are helping to stabilise the polity. "We will encourage them to come together more. We want a situation where it is PDP versus another party. In that case, the polity will be more stable. Even our members will be more loyal to the party because they will have nowhere to go." o Insecurity The President said he was not happy with communal conflicts and ethnic cleansing in Nigeria, adding that there was a difference between the activities of Boko Haram and those involved in communal killings. He said, "People leaving together must have disagreements. But this idea of youths carrying weapons and killing massively like what happened in Zamfara State recently has nothing to do with Boko Haram. "But because Boko Haram is an issue, whenever somebody is killed, everybody says it is Boko Haram. What happened in Zamfara State has nothing to do with Boko Haram. "This ethnic rivalry is becoming embarrassing. Government cannot continue to sit down and allow ethnic rivalry between communities or between different ethnic groups to continue." o Treat Jonathan with respect During the meeting, Tukur appealed to members of the party to treat Jonathan with respect and dignity because he is the symbol of the county. He said everywhere across the globe, Presidents are treated with dignity and respect and wondered why Jonathan was not being treated like that in Nigeria. He said, "Ample evidence within the territory of democracy have shown that democratically-elected Presidents are symbol of every nation. "Here in Nigeria, President Jonathan is our symbols. He must therefore be respected and treated with dignity. "Undermining the leader for no just reasons can nowhere bring us good results. This observation is necessary to remind PDP members that we owe ourselves a duty to protect, project and support our President to leave a lasting legacy for Nigerians." o Tukur survives, 20 officials resign Tukur was able to survive the gale of resignation that happened among the members of the NWC of the party in Abuja on Thursday. During the meeting there was no call by any member of the NWC for either his resignation or removal. Eight members of the 12-member NWC resigned their appointments. At Wadata Plaza, the national chairman, who wore a white Babariga (flowing gown) and a cap to match, asked journalists to be happy. "When you see your father, you are happy. Aren't you happy seeing me in your midst?" he asked as he moved round the compound greeting people. o Vote of confidence in Jonathan Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Dr. Reuben Abati, in a statement, said the NEC passed a vote of confidence in his boss. Abati said in passing the vote, NEC members said it was evident that Nigeria had made significant progress in many sectors under Jonathan's leadership. o Interim committee members Briefing journalists after the meeting, a former Minister of Information, who is also the Chairman of the Planning Committee for the Special Convention, Prof. Jerry Gana, said an interim committee had been set up to work with the remaining members of the NWC. Those he listed included Chibudum Nwuche (Acting Deputy National Chairman); Dr. Remi Akintoye (Acting National Secretary); Sen. Emma Agboti (Acting Deputy National Secretary), Yusuf Abubakar (Acting National Organising Secretary); Tony Okeke (Acting National Publicity Secretary); Simon Jok (Acting National Legal Adviser); Mohammed Sa'ad (Acting National Youth Leader); and Oyibo Nwaneri (Acting Woman Leader). o Convention holds July 20 Gana also said that the officers would remain in office until the conduct of the July 20 special convention, where elections would be properly conducted to fill vacant offices in the NWC. But he said delegates who were part of the 2012 national convention would be the ones to elect the new officers. He also revealed that zonal congress would be held in the South-West on July 11. On the number of those in the Special Convention Planning Committee, Gana said he would be assisted by Governor Akpabio, who would serve as his deputy while Deputy Senate President, Sen. Ike Ekweremadu, would serve as the secretary. Apart from two representatives from each of the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, five governors are also in the committee. The governors are Theodore Orji (Abia); Shehu Shema (Katsina), Gabriel Suswam (Benue); Emmanuel Uduaghan (Delta); and Isa Yuguda(Bauchi). Also in the committee is the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Sen. Pius Anyim and the Political Adviser to the President, Mr. Ahmed Gulak. Twenty seven other people were also listed as members of the committee. o Amaechi absent The Governor of Rivers State, who is also the Chairman of the NGF , Mr. Rotimi Amaechi, was not at the meeting due to the suspension slammed on him by the party. |

No course for alarm, all illegal APC should sheat their swords and join the progressives APC. let's push out the PDPs incessant anomalies once and for all. Enough is enough. |
The Independent Electoral Commission has acknowledged the application for registration submitted to it by the All Progressives Congress. The Chief Press Secretary to the INEC Chairman, Mr. Kayode Idowu, stated this in an email sent to our correspondent in Abuja on Sunday. The Action Congress of Nigeria, Congress for Progressive Change and the All Nigeria Peoples Party are some of the parties forming the APC. It was gathered that INEC asked the APC to submit its application and manifesto. The merger parties, had on June 7, 2013, submitted the application to INEC. The application was signed by the national chairmen, secretaries and treasurers of the ACN, the ANPP and the CPC. Idowu said the commission sent the acknowledgment to the merger parties. He said, "INEC has received notice of the merger. The commission has already acknowledged the notice and the acknowledgement has been sent to the parties." Idowu explained that the application was going through standard procedure, adding that the result would be communicated to the merger parties after the process. Our correspondent gathered that the commission, in a letter dated June 12, 2013, had acknowledged the APC's application. The letter, signed by INEC's Secretary, Abdullahi Kaugama, asked APC to submit 35 copies of its constitution and manifesto to it. The letter read, 'Re-Request for Merger of the ACN, ANPP and CPC'. "Please, refer to your letter dated June 5, 2013, and find forwarded herewith 35 copies of the Commission prescribed Form A1 for your completion and return to the Commission. "You are therefore requested to submit the under-listed documents - 1. 35 copies of proposed constitution 2. 35 copies of proposed manifesto 3. Affidavit in support for the claim in Form PA 1; "You may note that the Commission shall verify the proposed headquarters address and claims in the Form PA 1. "Kindly revert to enable the Commission to commence the process of your request." Form PA.1 is said to be essentially for the records of its leadership, including the executive officers and members of the party's Board of Trustees and their addresses. The opposition parties have yet to elect their executive officers and the members of their BoT. The commission told the merger parties that the submission of the documents would enable it to commence processing of the application. Based on Section 84 of the 2010 Electoral Act, the parties will know whether their merger has been approved on or before July 6, 2013. The Electoral Act requires the commission to consider the application on or before the expiration of 30 days from the date it is received. If the application is approved, the commission will withdraw certificates of registration of the merger parties and issue them with a single certificate. But responding to the move to register the merger party, the National Legal Adviser of African Peoples Congress, one of the parties in dispute over the APC acronym, Mr. Kingsley Nnadi, told The PUNCH on Sunday that it was one of the ploys to deny his party registration. He said, "We know that there are many plans to deny us registration; we are meeting on Monday (today) to make our position known on all these issues and chart a new course for action." |

States and local governments yesterday aborted the May 2013 Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC) meeting. They walked out on Minister of State for Finance Dr Yerima Lawal Ngama and left Abuja without any cash. The meeting is the forum where monthly allocation to the tiers of government is shared. Commissioners of Finance Forum Chair Timothy Odaah (Ebonyi State) said there would no longer be FAAC meetings “until all the conditions are met by the Federal Government”. He said commissioners were going back empty handed. By implication, states that depend entirely on the monthly allocation from the FAAC meeting may not be able to meet basic obligations, like paying workers’ salaries and contractors. Odaah gave the reasons for quitting the meeting to include: “The non- implementation of the decisions and resolutions taken in most FAAC meeting plenary sessions, especially the May 2013 resolutions which still remains inconclusive based on the fact that the arrears of February have not been paid.” He also complained about the failure of the committee to pay “augmentation of last month (April Allocation) passed with a resolution.” He said this augmentation has not been paid “and there is no clue as to why”. Odaah lamented that “every month, returns from the states accountant generals appear to be shabbier than the previous one”. He said states “have taken a lot of disappointment from the administration of FAAC which by intents and purposes has become templates of ineptitude”. The states and local governments, he added, “have been bearing with the situation”. “Workers and contractors have to be paid, the various programmes of the state governments and local governments that are embodied in their various manifestos to carry the federation of Nigeria along with other obligations have to be met”. The commissioners of Finance said they had decided to take the matter up with the President “ so that he and the state governments have to meet on these decisions that we have been hiding for them to put heads together with every other well meaning persons in the federation so that this problem will be resolved once and for all”. Odaah noted that no member of the forum was absent from the media briefing, an indication that “this is a unanimous decision and resolution by all of the commissioners of finance”. There were indications that trouble was brewing after the technical session when commissioners, while waiting for the arrival of the minister of state for Finance, told Accountant-General of the Federation (AGF) Jonah Otunla, that they would not accept any delay of the plenary session, the meeting that endorses the decisions of the state Accountants-General at the technical session which also ratifies the amount to be shared for the month. Shortly thereafter, Ngama came in for the plenary and about 50 minutes later, the commissioners of finance started trooping out of the auditorium of the Ministry of Finance venue of the planned FAAC meeting and headed for Sheraton Hotel to address the media. The Nation reported on Wednesday that the Federal Government was constrained to pay the arrears because it had initially released $1 billion to the states on request. The Federal Government argued that since the $1 billion was drawn from the Excess Crude Account (ECA) and financing the February arrears will also be drawn from the same ECA, paying the February arrears would drastically dwindle the reserves in the ECA. However, the Federal Government has agreed to offset the February arrears in installments through augmentation to allow the ECA recover from the $1 billion withdrawn from the account. The February arrears is almost $1 billion, the amount advanced to the states from the ECA as a privilege extended to the states. |
APC insists it has fulfilled all requirements THE political party that will eventually use the APC acronym may be decided at the nation’s courts, following the decision of another APC to challenge the registration of the merging All Progressives Congress (APC) by the Independent national Electoral Commission (INEC). Barely six days after the merging, All Progressives Congress (APC) approached the INEC for registration as a political party, another rival group, All Progressive Congress of Nigeria (APCN) has threatened to take INEC to court to secure an order restraining it from registering any group with such an acronym . The threat was also coming as the INEC set more hurdles for the merging opposition parties before registration. There is the fear, however, that the merger group may suffer the same fate with the rival African Peoples Congress (APC) which the commission had earlier rejected its application. INEC sources Thursday disclosed to The Guardian that the application for registration by the merger group did not come with names and addresses of their national officers, as required by Section 222 (a) of the Nigerian constitution, rather the group submitted an application that was signed by only the national chairmen, secretaries and treasurers of the merging political parties. But in a swift reaction to claims by the INEC, a member of the opposition merger committee, Osita Okechukwu noted that the committee had fulfilled all the requirements to merge into a single political party, adding that the group carefully involved the National Chairman of the ACN, the National Secretary of the All Nigeria People’s Party (ANPP) and the National Treasurer of the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) who endorsed the letter of request for registration to INEC as interim leadership of the party with its national office at Wuse District in Abuja. He added that the office was donated to the party by an official. “Both INEC and the other group should commend us for showing a little experience in our request for registration. We carefully used and involved the leadership of the three merging parties who signed the letter. We could not have planned to fail when we involved the services of senior legal experts in the country for advice and writing of the letter to INEC,” he noted. But in a move that suggests more trouble and confusion for the merger group, a third group, the All Progressives Congress of Nigeria (APCN), threatened to take the INEC to court over an alleged attempt to register another group with a similar APC acronym. The group, which is bearing the same name and acronym with the merger parties (All Progressive Congress) disclosed that it commenced its registration process with INEC with a letter of intent sent to the commission on March 5, 2013, same time as the controversial African Peoples Congress which is also laying claim to the APC, adding that INEC in a reply signed by its National Secretary Abdulahi Kaugama, dated March 15 advised the group to change the name claiming that a group had earlier come with the same acronym for registration. According to the National Secretary of the group, Oguzie Ikechukwu, the group acted in compliance with INEC advice and re-applied for registration in March 28 as All Progressive Congress of Nigeria (APCN). But INEC again advised the group to still change the name for the same reason that another group with a similar acronym had approached the commission for registration. Wondering why INEC couldn’t register his group as a political party even when it has changed from APC to APCN, Ikechukwu disclosed that the party had also in a similar letter to INEC dated May 22 asked the commission to furnish it with the name of the group it claimed had earlier applied for registration under such an acronym relying on the freedom of Information Act. |
Donald Onukaoguu, the Senate President of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) and four other students have been killed in a road crash. The students met their end yesterday on their way to the University of Uyo, Akwa- Ibom State, to intervene in the current crisis rocking that institution. The lone survivor for the accident, who is currently receiving treatment at the Federal Medical Centre, Umuahia, claimed that an illegal road block mounted by the police was responsible for the tragedy. It would be recalled that yesterday, the police killed several students during a protest organized by students of Engineering at the university. That prompted the decision of the NANS leaders to embark on the urgent trip to Akwa-Ibom. The Engineering students were protesting against new transport fees and other anti- student policies, including the contentious “No pay, No examination” policy. Confirming the death of his colleagues this morning, the President of NANS, Yinka Gbadebo, blamed the tragedy on the police. “The police under the current IGP killed nine students within one week; the police action is barbaric and we call for the immediate resignation of the IGP, Mohammed Dikko Abubakar." However, it is yet unclear how the incident happened. The survivor of the crash claimed that the police mounted an illegal road block by putting heavy logs and stones on the road and that the unsuspecting students, who were travelling in a NANS bus rammed into the illegal barrier. According to him, the police ran away immediately the accident occurred. Another source, has, however controverted that account, claiming that a trailer crushed the students’ vehicle. The Nigerian police have a poor reputation of extra-judicial killings. "We are closing down all campuses in Nigeria and national action will commence immediately," Mr. Gbadebo threatened. In a similar occurrence last February, nine students of the Nasarawa State University in Keffi, died in a road accident at Mararaba, Karu Local Government Area as they fled from soldiers who attacked them during a campus protest. The soldiers ao killed several students on the scene protest . In July last year, three students’ union leaders were killed on the Owo–Akure Road. They were the Student Union Presidents of the Federal University of Technology, Akure, Comrade Awopegba Oluwaseun, Comrade Akintola Abiodun of the Adeyemi College of Education, and Comrade Oyikan Olotu of the Ondo State School of Midwifery, Akure. |

As the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) continues to come apart at the seams, one of its suspended governors, Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko of Sokoto State, today came down hard and heavy on National Chairman Bamanga Tukur, denouncing him as a political prostitute whose mission is to destroy the party and north. Addressing a mammoth crowd at Government House, Wamakko said that people like Bamanga Tukur and Ahmed Gulak, the Special Adviser on Political Matters to the President, have no business in PDP and ought to be sacked by President Goodluck Jonathan. On his suspension from the PDP, Governor Wamakko vehemently dismissed the development, saying he has no regrets and no apology whatsoever.” Furthermore, he stressed, “I will never support Godswill Akpabio, the Chairman of PDP Governors Forum.” Wamakko called on Mr. Jonathan to bring back, Ahmadu Ali and Abubakar Kawu Baraje, to continue as Chairman and Secretary of the party. The governor, who was flanked by the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Honourable Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, said, “When we took over PDP in 2011, the party has no single elected person from Sokoto state. Today we have won all the 234 seats of the Councilors as well as all the 23 local government chairmen. We have won all the 30 members of the state house of assembly, all the 11 members of the national assembly, all the 3 senators as well as the governor and his deputy, therefore the peoples of Sokoto state are ardent lovers and supporters of Alu not PDP.” Governor Wamakko’s scorched-earth criticism of his party’s chairman comes as sources say he may dump the PDP for the yet to be registered All Progressive Congress (APC). The sources said the governor held a closed-door meeting with Bola Ahmed Tinibu in Lagos upon his arrival from The Netherlands, where he attended an investment forum along with the Kwara State Governor, Ahmed Abdulfatah. The source confided a SaharaReporters correspondent that Wamakko spent over three hours with Tinubu to discuss the terms of his joining the APC. |
2curiousity: Hello Mr. Payless. Kindly take note that i used the term "419" to describe his attitude and i hope you know the reason why i used that term. For instance if a man made a promise to pay you N10k if you are able to carry out an assignment for him and after you have done that assignment the man is now giving you an excuse, begging you to manage N3k that is available. Will you be wrong to call such a man 419? at from Nigeria concept. Do you remember he was too vocal about paying N22,000 minimum wage to workers before he was voted in? How much is your governor paying now? Ask if you are not a civil servant in oyo state. Do you remember he made a promise on news media that he will not demolish houses and shops when voted? Why is it that he has now taken that demolition as if that is the only thing his government has come to do?(Am not against his beautification programs but am against his own style of total demolition having in mind that we can beautify without much of demolition). And again i like you to read what he campaigned for:Oga please tell us about any Governor even the President that achieved what he promised during manifestation and campaigns? Mind you, the so call developed world to can't achieve 100% of their promise. They can only try to. Even our parent do promise us heaven n earth but they can only try to fulfil some of the promise they made. I challenge you to mention any politician that fulfil 75% of the promise made before election not even GEJ. Waiting for your reply sir. |
Malam Nuhu Ahmed Ribadu, pioneer chairman of Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has just replied President Goodluck Jonathan’s outburst that Ribadu is suffering of ‘ethically challenge’ and series of vindictiveness against Jonathan instead of appreciation. Ribadu in his reply to Jonathan said that it is Jonathan that is ethically challenged and struggling to redeem his lost morality and integrity. Ribadu in a statement issued by his office in Abuja described Reuben Abati, Jonathan’s spokesman as fraud presidential spokesman, standing on crooked crutches of rehashed falsehood fabricated by corrupt politicians prosecuted by Ribadu while he was heading EFCC. The statement said “Reuben Abati’s statement, typical of his increasingly desperate personality, has exposed him as a fraud of a presidential spokesman who does not have the simplest level of media literacy. It is unfortunate that he stands on crooked crutches of rehashed falsehoods fabricated by corrupt politicians prosecuted by Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, in his desperate attempt to hold on to his job. “His conjectured statement is a sad commentary on the type of people we have in the helms of our affairs: even with the resources at his disposal, Abati could not conduct a little research to save himself from embarrassment before he set out barking. “It is a huge gaffe for Abati to charge Ribadu of ingratitude as the latter has more valid stand to make similar accusation having been betrayed after his selfless service to the nation in the Petroleum Revenue Task Force committee. The question of who is ethically challenged, however, is left for Nigerians to answer.” Saharareporterr.com |

BARRING last minute changes, a formal application for registration by the All Progressive Congress (APC) may be presented to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) this week. A competent source told The Guardian that an interim executive of the proposed party, comprising serving chairmen, secretaries and treasurers of the ACN, ANPP and the CPC have been constituted to achieve the goal. They have been mandated to pick from among themselves those who would positions of the chairman, secretary and treasurer of the proposed party. The old secretariat of NITEL, located at zone 6 Abuja, is being proposed to serve as the headquarters of the APC. Former Kano state governor, Ibrahim Shekarau, who is touted to serve as the secretary of the proposed party, is billed to make this known today. Meanwhile, kites are flying on who would occupy the position of protem chairman, which may have been zoned to the South East. A source within the APC’s top hierarchy confided in The Guardian that some notable politicians from the Northwest are not favourably disposed to the choice of former national chairman of All Nigeria People’s Party (ANPP), Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu, to occupy the chairmanship seat. The source disclosed that Onu’s candidacy is also not enjoying support of the Southwest. According to the source, the initial suggestion for the former Kano State governor, Shekarau to head the fledgling political movement was deflated by politicians from the Northwest, so as to pave way for the emergence of one of theirs, as presidential candidate. He said: “One issue that is affecting the setting up of the interim national executive committee to see to the registration of the APC is which zone the presidential candidate and the running mate should come from. Initially, the Southwest wanted Bisi Akande, but started backpedaling against the background of the provision that all those that would temporary hold executive positions should not contest any substantive position immediately the party is registered.” The source also noted that the little squabbles between promoters of APC in the South East have made it practically impossible for the zone to agree on what it wants, pointing out that Imo State Governor Rochas Okorocha’s aspiration to run for the presidency is also militating against the team play of the zone. He pointed out that two distinct factions have become noticeable in the South East caucus, saying that while former Imo State Governor, Achike Udenwa, is leading former Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), stalwarts in the merger, Governor Okorocha and former Anambra State Governor, Senator Chris Nwabueze Ngige, is leading the other. But reacting to the perceived wrangling in the South East caucus, former Enugu State governorship candidate of the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC), Mr. Osita Okechukwu, denied any zonal input “at this time”. He stressed that it is a party matter: “It is the party that would release the template; we are still talking. The major thrust in the arrangement rests on the parties forming the merger and only when there is a clash should the consideration of zone come in.” |
Former governor of Bayelsa State, Timipre Sylva, today breached President Goodluck Jonathan’s security, walking up to the Nigeria leader at the high table of a wedding party and shaking hands with him. The occasion was the public wedding reception of a daughter of another former governor, Peter Odili. A security source told Sahara Reporters both the security and protocol of the President were taken aback by Mr. Sylva’s action, as he approached the high table while the president was already seated with other guests, however, they claimed they knew the president was not in any danger. A source close to Mr. Sylva said he only went to greet his next-door neighbor and celebrant, Mr. Odili and that he (Sylva) used that opportunity to say " hello " to the President as a form of courtesy. " It was a chance meeting between the two, there is no reason to impute any motive, when Mr. President asked Sylva how he was doing he said he was still alive and left to his seat afterwards, " said the source that witnessed the incident. Sylva, the former governor of Bayelsa State, is facing corruption charges initiated by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission. Mr. Sylva has repeatedly stated that his trial was motivated by his political disagreements with Mr. Jonathan. He was prevented from running for a second term in office by Mr. Jonathan, who then imposed upon the state as governor, his protege, Seriake Dickson. Political observers say that today’s event also reflects the intricate connections between power and corruption in Nigeria. Odili is widely-known to have looted the resources of Rivers State during his tenure as governor, but has never been prosecuted because of a perpetual injunction he obtained for self-protection. Although all of that information must be in the hands of President Jonathan, who claims to be fighting corruption, he chose to publicly take a seat at a wedding funded by proceeds of corruption |

THE Nigerian Air Force has signed a Memoranda of Understanding (MoU) with 10 universities and five research institutions in the country towards capacity building for its personnel. The pact, the first by the military, would enable the Air Force to source slots for training its personnel locally instead of spending foreign currency to train them abroad. Among the institutions which signed the MoU are Covenant University, Otta, University of Ibadan, University of Lagos, Federal University of Technology, Owerri, Lagos State University, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife, University of Benin, Ahmadu Bello University, Yaba College of Technology, Electronic Development Institute (ELDI), Awka, National Agency for Science & Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI), Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria (DICON) and the National Space Research and Development Agency, Abuja. Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Alex Sabundu Badeh said, while presiding over the signing ceremony, that the new measure is aimed at helping to build a self-reliant nation. Vice Chancellor of Lagos State University, Prof. John Oladapo Obafunwa, who spoke on behalf of the other vice chancellors and heads of agencies said he was “witnessing for the first time in Nigeria a challenge being posed to the academia to come forward and contribute to the development of science and technology in this country. It is a big challenge but we will live up to the expectations.” |
