oldtruth: You sound so funny. There are better ways to go about that. So, we will wait till investors are ready and everyone starts farming. Don't be sentimental with your thinking. look at it critically and access. People will die, business will shut down and after everything investors will run. Why do you think countries don't use such approach? It doesn't ends well. you will see that he is still going to back out and numerous would have loss badly. Wait and see So how do we encourage investors to come in? Is it by opening our borders to cheap smuggled rice? Did you just say other countries don't use such approach, Japan placed high tariffs on imported rice decades ago and still maintaining it despite the harassment from the US, Switzerland still maintains high tariffs on some of their food imports, the EU did theirs by stylishly putting regulations on packaging of food from outside, the US has increased its tariffs on certain goods into the country in order to protect their manufacturers and several other countries, this step by the FG is long overdue |

oldtruth: So, why can't Nigeria work on its own land border? They are manning it well now. Generate income through land border as well. Not crippling them. Check China, US and the rest. We know we have corrupt officials at the border posts but fact remains that Benin and Niger reps are officially promoting the smuggling because of what they stand to gain, billions of dollars yearly. Nigeria wants to be self sufficient in some of those things smuggled in while these countries are doing everything to sabotage the idea |

oldtruth: shut up! what do you know. Why is it being felt this bad. What do you know about the seaport? Do you know why most importers prefers neighboring port? Which legitimate businesses are you talking about here? Nigeria should work on itself and stop making economic blunders . Come up with fact Those cars, rice etc smuggled through Benin rep is because the Benin rep authorities decided to put in place a lower tariff rates on those goods and it is now cheaper for importers to get it into Benin and smuggle into Nigeria, Benin rep makes billions of dollars yearly and Nigeria loses, Nigeria is trying to increase local production and Benin is trying to destroy that effort |

wirinet: They did not ban food importation, they banned importation (smuggling ) through the land borders. If you want to import food into the country, import it through Apapa port, Tin can Island ports, Calabar ports, or any other Nigerian sea ports. Many still don't understand this, even foreign rice can still be imported through our ports today |

olujastro: Benin Republic intentionally refused to police its own borders with Nigeria for decades because smuggling of illegal goods into Nigeria constitutes about 25% of its economic GDP. Benin Republic practices a leeching economic system where they import what they don't need(rice, cars, food, etc.), collect import duties on them and dump everything into Nigeria that has the market and purchasing power. They also smuggle our fuel that Nigerian govt has spent billions on to subsidise for Nigerians. That's why..."no country can survive economically with a country like Benin Republic as its neighbour"
Even though our corrupt customs are helping them, the Nigerian government expects Benin Republic to do its own part first, hence the border closure. Thanks bro, you just gave a brief summary of what we are talking about |

Empredboy: do you know that foreign rice smuggling has increased more than before? Why is foreign rice still in the market? Benin rep will never sign the agreement not to export rice into Nigeria because now they are even exporting more. Who is fooling who? Can you give us a proof or link of increased smuggling across the border? People are still allowed to import rice through our ports |

gaetano: Don't compare organized countries with us. We are still battling nepotism, corruption, tribalism etc. It takes a unified country to develop a nation. We are no nation. Buhari has been in power since 2015, all your president had to was to subsidize agricultural import products to farmers, let rice farmers begin planting as early as 2017, then give a date like 2019 as a time for rice importation ban. By then, you would have gotten the desired metric tones the feed the population. FYI rice importation through our ports is not banned, take note of that. Only smuggling of same rice through our borders that stopped, you can still import rice through our ports as we speak |

If we want to end Zoning lets say so not cos its Igbo turn Have any elected Igbo leader told u they are not part of Nigeria https://dailypost.ng/2017/03/27/2019-nothing-like-rotational-presidency-igbos-will-contest-chekwas-okorie/No more zoning, fight for it and stop begging. LabDNA: Were they insulting anyone in 1999 when you propagated your 'I will never vote Ibo president" propaganda even before social media era.
They simply want to pay you back in your own coin. They will only be confirmed slaves if they ever vote a yoruba man without getting their own shot. If you can't vote an Igbo man like SE/SS have resolved to do after voting SW in 1999 and 2003, they you can lament from here to jerusulem.
If you don't believe in equity, stop crying and allow them to play their politics their own way. You've never meant well for them in the first place. We will all be here till 2023 to see who the real 'erus' are. Lol, wailing continues. You were whipped and thrashed into line in 2015, same in 2019, 2023 is by the corner since the Igbos don't want to learn from their past mistakes, meanwhile speak for the SE and stop lumping it with the SS because they can never vote for a SE person, stop the attaché by force. You run your mouth as if the inconsequential votes from the SE matter in the scheme of things. |

Do u even know why zoning was agreed ..so every region no matter how small can have equal opportunity ....if people have to contest then their is no zoning You even dislike those people you mentioned and no serious party would want to nominate someone who can't garner votes for it in their respective regions. You've insulted them including Joe Igbokwe, Nollywood's Kenneth Okonkwo, Ngige, Orji Uzor Kalu, and several others, their crime is only because they are APC members and APC can never trust you for that. @the bolded, Igbo politicians scuttled that idea in 2011 because of GEJ and you can not force the rest of the country to it again |

That explains why many presidents come to climate change conferences in their private jets emitting several ozone depleting substances into the, speak on climate change only to leave the conferences with their jets. Who are we deceiving? Nothing in the ECOWAS protocol permits the smuggling and dumping of foreign goods from one member state to the other. Buhari should as a matter of urgency open the borders if they cannot provide alternative to curb the high cost of rice.
