Solar energy ‘coming to rural Lagos schools’ soon

[b]Damilola Ogunbiyi, general manager of the Lagos state electricity board, on Wednesday said the state would deploy solar power to 172 rural schools in the state by June. Ogunbiyi spoke in Lagos when the Lagos branch of the Nigerian Institution of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (NIEEE) paid her a courtesy visit. “We are deploying solar energy to about 172 schools and temporary healthcare centres all around Lagos so that all our riverine and rural schools would be powered by solar by June,” she said. Seh explained that the Lagos Energy Academy was built by the state government to create jobs, provide qualified manpower for the distribution companies and bridge the energy needs of the nation. But she lamented that the fall in the standard of education has shifted the focus of the academy from admitting technical college students to university graduates. Ogunbiyi said that Siemens regulated the trainings and certified the engineers in conformity with standards. “Our educational system has failed us so much that we are not getting the quality of people that we were hoping to get. This same exam that they give to 17-year-olds in Siemens, our electrical engineering graduates hardly pass,” she said. “So, as an organisation, I think you need to go look at technical and university institutions because if you say you are a graduate or have Master’s in electrical engineering and you cannot tell how a transformer works, then there is a problem. I wanted technical college students to go out there and fix the problem but they do not pass at all.” She revealed that the board was partnering with the private sector and the government to develop a direct labour force to maintain street lights and other issues of power in the state. Michael Akan, chairman of NIEEE, who led the delegation, said that the association was ready to partner the board in training and other projects. “We want to see how we can partner with you in any of your activities because we have a depository of resource persons in the energy and power sector to move Lagos State forward,” he said. The team was conducted round the academy and the various power plants, and they interacted with the various engineers.

Nice.

I'm mostly impressed that they are using a projectised form of management. Its a system of management that allows for more effective utilization of resources, most especially humans.

To make this sustainable however, the government needs to get involved in the whole value chain for the production of the solar panels and batteries. The areas it can't directly cover should be opened up for people to come in and invest.

We should import as little as possible the components needed to make this possible. That way the government can even proudly state the number of jobs it had created through its policy of making sure the schools have renewable power supply.
Good post...

We are working on that. Lagos state just built and commissioned Lagos State Energy Academy to train our future electrical engineers to deal with all the power challenges in Lagos state and Nigeria...

Alenia Aeronautica has delivered a second ATR 42MP (Maritime Patrol) Surveyor to Nigeria.

March 29: Alenia Aeronautica has delivered the second ATR 42MP (Maritime Patrol) Surveyor aircraft to the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) in a ceremony held at the company’s Training Centre at Turin-Caselle in Italy.

The aircraft is being used by the Nigerian Air Force for typical patrolling missions, such as reconnaissance, Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) control and search and rescue (SAR).

http://www.airinternational.com/view_article.asp?ID=1796
Contract for the plane was signed back in 2007 and the last one was delivered in 2009.

So, what's Jonascam got to do with the plane other than refusing to use it and save lives?

The question now is where was this plane since 6 years ago.?

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has taken delivery of the first of two ATR-42MP maritime patrol aircraft from Alenia Aeronautica, as part of a contract signed with the firm in March 2007.
The NAF will use the ATR-42MP aircraft in its traditional maritime patrol missions such as reconnaissance, patrolling the exclusive economic zone, and search and rescue (SAR) activities.
The ATR-42MP aircraft went through necessary structural and system modifications at the Alenia Aeronautica site in Brindisi before its delivery from the Toulouse site in a 'green' configuration.
Installation and integration of the systems and sensors, as part of the maritime patrol configuration, and test flights were carried out in the final step at the Alenia facilities in Caselle, Turin.
The Selex Galileo-developed ATOS (airborne tactical observation and surveillance) mission system fitted atop the aircraft includes workstations for the mission operators, computers and displays for managing the mission, and main sensors such as search radar and electro-optical equipment.
As part of the contract agreement Alenia will also provide pilot and operator training on the basic aircraft at the ATR training centre in Toulouse, and MP configuration of the aircraft and the mission system at the Alenia Aeronautica training centre at the Caselle South site in Turin.
The delivery of the second aircraft, which is currently being converted, will take place in 2010.

The Governor of Lagos State, Mr Babatunde Fashola (SAN), on Friday said that the state government had concluded plans to generate five megawatts through the Lagos Solar Project, for schools and healthcare centres.
Fashola, represented by the Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Mrs Adejoke Orelope-Adefulire, disclosed this at the official commissioning of the Lagos Solar Project in Lagos.
The governor said that the aim of the project was to provide five MW of the embedded solar power to education and health facilities.
“This project will deliver 213 sustainable solar power enclosures with an integrated battery bank and remote monitoring system to 172 public secondary schools.
“Also, 30 public secondary boarding schools and 11 public health centres located in the rural and riverine areas in Lagos State will benefit,” he said.
The governor said that the state recognised the importance of technology globally and the impact that good education and access to healthcare had on the development of the economy.
Fashola said that the Lagos State Electricity Board (LSEB) had embarked on a ground breaking project to provide clean and sustainable power solution for schools and primary healthcare centres with little or no access to electricity.
He said that the project was financed by the state government in partnership with the United Kingdom (UK) Department for International Development (DFID).
The governor said with the solar power project, coupled with the existing five Independent Power Projects (IPP), the government had generally increased the electricity supply in the state.
He also appreciated the assistance of their partners in the project.
Also, Mrs Damilola Ogunbiyi, the Managing Director of Lagos State Electricity Board, said that the project was managed centrally from Project Management Office (PMO) located within LSEB.
“With construction spread across 213 sites throughout the state, field activities are coordinated through five strategically located hubs, each run by a technical manager.
“The impact is to enable Lagos State to remain at the forefront of the use and implementation of innovative power solution, using renewable technology in an environment where power is a scarce but invaluable commodity,” she said.

1. He promised to work with the man Nigerians just elected based on his duty as a Nigerian while at the same time pledging loyalty and allegiance to the man the same Nigerians just rejected and drove out of office for good reasons.

Where is the sense and wisdom in that kind of thoughtless, ambiguous, bogus and absent minded talk?

2. How do you pledge loyalty and allegiance to the most crooked, corrupt and incompetent president in the history of this country? Shows how crooked, personally and mentally bankrupt he is...

3. GMB is yet to pick his official team, advisers, ministers, ambassadors, directors and so on, but this thoughtless man who just in the same breath questioned a still non existing government and not yet named team members, while in another pandering and pledging loyalty and allegiance to the man Nigerians just rejected and chased out of office.

4. He's reminding the elected president that Nigerians voted for him and not his party as if the elected president doesn't know this already. Besides, the elected president knows a whole lot about governing that this clueless man who was just voted in to work with the elected president but instead pledge loyalty and allegiance to another man, a man the Nigerian people doesn't want.

Shouldn't your loyalty and allegiance rest with the people of Nigeria and the man the people of Nigeria pinned their hopes, desires and future on?

We hope and pray the elected president is our moses, but if not, we all have our PVCs to use against him 4 years from now so he should just shut his mouth and render whatever assistance he can to the elected president on behalf of his constituents and the people of Nigeria instead of the crooked, corrupt and incompetent man he's romancing and idolizing.
