Politics / Abia Government Visionless, Rudderless - Ndukwe Iko by AseV(m): 1:32pm On Oct 30, 2020
APC stalwart in Abia, Chief Ndukwe Iko has described the Okezie Ikpeazu-led government as one without vision and without any plan to affect the lives of the people for good.

Further describing it as rudderless, Iko in a recent chat with ABN TV said governance does not exist in the state especially in terms of construction and maintenance of infrastructure when placed at per with neighbouring states.

The industrialist accused those in the government of being only concerned with their welfare and that of cronies without showing empathy to people of the state.

"In Abia, there is no governance in terms of building and or maintaining infrastructure, especially when you see what happens in the other South East States," he said.

Iko continues, "Does Abia have an infrastructural master plan for the cities and state? I doubt if anything like that exists. What are the economic plans, Health goal, and others? The government is to me like one without vision, rudderless but with a mission to self and family enrich.

"People in government in Abia are on looting spree even at the expense of pensioners wages and workers salary. Therefore the state suffers".

While insisting that no amount of attack from the people he called hirelings will stop him from speaking up, the APC chief reiterated optimism that something big will happen in the state.

"But if one speaks out or give dispassionate council to them, their hirelings will come insulting but we can not stop saying it frankly.

"Something big in our state. Life first and God Almighty shall grant us the opportunity to share and work it out. Something big indeed" he added.

Meanwhile, a group Abia North Stakeholders Assembly (ANSA) has reacted to Ikoh's allegation, saying Abia has since 2009 witnessed steady progress.

According to the group in a statement signed by Hon. Goodluck Ibem, the President General and Chief Sunday Chukwu, the Publicity Secretary, Ikoh does not understand what it takes to run a government neither does he possess the required knowledge to lead, even as it says the APC chief is deceiving himself.

The group described Ikoh's statement as unguarded and indication that he was not in the state when the then government initiated programmes that affected the lives of Abians and fought insecurity through massive youth engagement.

The statement titled, "CHIEF NDUKWE IKOH OUTBURST AGAINST ABIA LEADERS SYCOPHANTIC" further stated that infrastructure and urban renewal took place during the period Ikoh alleged governance issues were confronting the state.

Politics / Hon. Kalu Pledges Innovation, Knowledge-based Information Management In NASS by AseV(m): 11:54am On Oct 29, 2020
The Chairman House Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Hon. Benjamin Kalu has assured that his committee is committed to bringing about transparency, commitment to duty, sincerity to service, innovation in the information management of the National Assembly.

He made this known in a chat with ABN TV in Abuja shortly after his emergence as the Best Lawmaker of the Year 2020.

While expressing gratitude over the award, the Bende federal constituency Abia State representative while decrying poor funding of his committee expressed optimism that next year will offer a robust platform in enhancing public engagement that will engender knowledge and trust between Nigerians and their representatives.

"I try to innovate and change the dynamics, give Nigerians more credible information, draw the public closer to the parliament through public engagement mechanisms that I have created. We have a rich workplan but the challenge has always been funding. Hopefully, with this budget (2021) we will see if we can be able to drive the agenda of the Media and Public Affairs Committee.

"If we are able to do that, Nigerians will have a different understanding, perception of the National Assembly because they will view it from the perspective of knowledge. I want to drive reliable information that will help Nigerians make decisions. The expectation management of Nigerians will automatically change from what it is and you don't blame them because of the scarcity of relevant information

"Bridging that gap is what I'm set out to do and once this is achieved, Nigerians will understand better, believe in the legislative arm better and embrace it better," he said.

He said his bills so far have been tailored towards proper needs analysis of the Nigerian people, interpreting it better and applying a legislative intervention that will help mitigate the challenges.

The lawmaker while recounting his experience reiterated that he was the very first person to speak on the floor of the 9th House of Representatives where he tabled the ecological needs of his people.

According to him, the motion so far has progressed to the MDAs in charge of the issue, stating that it is at the final stage before actions can be taken to solve the ecological needs of the Bende federal constituency.

Crime / #endsars Protesters Killed 2 Policemen, Looted 5 Banks, Burnt 102 Cars — Abia CP by AseV(m): 5:14pm On Oct 28, 2020
The Commissioner of Police in Abia state, CP Janet Agbede has alleged that the #EndSARS protesters in the state killed two policemen, out of which one was burnt to ashes and the other beheaded.

The Abia CP also said the incident which took place in the state on Tuesday, October 20, 2020, had the policemen robbed of their arms.

ABN TV reports that at a press briefing on Wednesday, the Commissioner of Police alleged that 5 banks were looted and about 102 private and government-owned cars burnt by the protesters.

While revealing that about 18 persons have so far been arrested with one FNC rifle with 12 rounds of five ammunition and other weapons, she dispelled insinuations that Fulanis are grouping to launch an attack on the people of the state.

"On October 4, 2020, the Inspector General of Police, IGP Mohammed Abubakar Adamu NPM, Mni, in response to what appeared to be a general demand enforced by a nationwide protest tagged "#ENDSARS after critical analysis of the situation announced a ban on Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) to douse tension. Despite the ban, the protest like the wildfire continued to spread across the country.

"In Abia, it initially appeared to be peaceful which necessitated giving them Police protection. However, on Tuesday, October 20, 2020, the #ENDSARS Protesters brutally murdered two Police Officers, beheaded and burnt one of them to ashes. They also robbed them of their arms. The hoodlums looted and burnt a building housing a unit of the Police at old Zone 6 Annex Aba. They attempted attack on police stations simultaneously and Correctional Service Centre at Umuahia with intent to set them ablaze but was repelled by the Police in conjunction with the Military.

"Furthermore, the #ENDSARS protesters looted and burnt the following in the State:

a) Five banks

b) One High Court

c) One Magistrate Court

d) Aba South Town Hall and the Church therein.

e) Abia State Fire Service building at Aba

t) One hundred and two Government and private-owned vehicles

e) Dislodged traders at Onions, Yam and Water Melon Markets in Aba

h) Street lights in Aba and Umuahia City.

"Also, on October 24, 2020, the hoodlums break open a warehouse opposite Golden Guinea in Umuahia where scanty bags of fertilizers and few bags of rice for replanting preserved with chemical were kept and started stealing them. However, following a distress call, a combined team of the Police and the Military timely arrived and repelled them.

"As at now, a total number of eighteen (18) persons were arrested with one FNC rifle with 12 rounds of live ammunition and other weapons of violence in connection with the killings, looting and burnings.

"I would like to use this medium to debunk the rumour that the Fulanis are grouping for an attack on Abians. This rumour is not only false but the handwork of those intending to cause more tension and confusion across the state. I WIsh to reassure the law-abiding citizens and residents in the State to go about their lawful businesses as the law enforcement agencies are ever ready to protect their lives and properties" she said.

Politics / Politicians Must Preach & Practise Youth Empowerment, Says Abia Speaker by AseV(m): 2:54pm On Oct 26, 2020
Speaker of Abia State House of Assembly, Rt Hon Chinedum Enyinnaya Orji, has admonished the political class to begin to not only preach youth empowerment and inclusion but to also practise it.

The Speaker stated this at the Special Town Hall meeting for stakeholders convoked by the Abia State Governor, Dr Okezie Ikpeazu, at the Dr Michael Okpara Auditorium, Umuahia, today.

"Let nobody deceive anybody that what is happening is against Mr President who is in Abuja as some people may want it to appear.

"A lot of oeople hijacked that protest, we have people from the political divide trying to bring down a constitutionally elected Government.

"If there is something we must learn from what has happened, it is that we as politicians have become endangered species.

"If you are a politician, you must begin to preach and practise youth empowerment and inclusion.

"What we expect is that the National Assembly should enact necessary laws that will create employment for the youths.

"We must be able to de-emphasize destruction of Government properties; those that sent you should remember they also have their own Individual properties.

"Nobody will be allowed to destroy anything if the right things are done.

"Everybody must put hands together to support the Government; the protest has been hijacked, we got it wrong when we allowed the protest to be hijacked.

"I am pleading with the youths, you have made your points and I want you to stick to it because if you come out with a gun, the Nigerian Police, the Nigerian Army are trained to engage such a person. Wanton destruction of government properties or individual properties will not take us anywhere," he concluded
