He clutched his little basket firmly ensuring it didn't slip his hand. He wend his way sluggishly until he sighted his mother coming out of the kitchen. He used all the remnant power left in him to run to her embrace.

Mother and son held each other tightly with passion and emotions. Aliya has missed her son's present badly likewise Umar. He could perceive smoke in his mother's cloth. He knew that his mother must have been cooking in their old cooking house at the right hand Side of their building.

Aliya detached from him and led him inside. She redress him in casual outing.

After she had done with everything, she set their lunch. She had prepared his favourite food of Ekuru with cold pap.

She was bewildered at speed at which her son was eating. She thought about different possibility of the causes but could not laid her hand on any one because he was giving more than enough food to school.

"how was your school?" she asked out of confusion. Hoping to get answer to her puzzle

"fine ma" he answered conscious of his eating manner and readjusted it. He noticed the confusing look his mother was giving him, he knew that he needed to give more information.

"we did six subjects. Everything was very simple especially, land preparation in Agricultural science" he said with smile.

"Really?" she asked with a grin.

"yes mummy. I even have a new friends today, one of them is Kola"

"wow! Thats interesting" she exclaimed happily.

Umar hurriedly finished his bowl and packed all the empty plates for wash in a bide to avoid more questions from his mother. Deep down in his mind, he knew that sweet and sour, he had experience both in his first day in school but he intentionally keep the other episode to himself.

His memory replayed what had happened to him. Everything had been going normal until the teacher asked a question to which the suppose brilliant student in class, Kemi, was unable to give answer to but was answered by him.

That was where the hatred had set in. The next thing he saw was Kemi hijacking his food and threw it away. She smiled and mock him as "too know" boy.

It really saddened him seriously. When he wanted to report her to their teacher, Kola was the one who double-crossed him. He advised him against it as everybody knew Kemi as a spoit kid. Her mother usually comes to school and pointed accusing finger to any teacher who dare lay his/her hands her daughter and even threatened to sue him/her to court.

It was Kola's advice that make him succumbed. That was how they started their friendship and play together till break was over. He even shared his new found friend's mince pie.

He was confused at how he could experienced pique and pleasantness the same day.

After he has finished washing, he flew out of the house towards their playing ground forgetting everything that has happened. Tomorrow is another day. He thought to himself.

Everywhere became deadly silent. Their teacher was baffled as to what might make the ever noisy class turned to grave yard. Then, murmuring followed with laughter. All the teacher's effort to control them did not yield any result. He was going out of patience when a student pointed to the entrance of the class.

Umar stood still, unable to move any further. He could not feel any weight on his leg. They refuse to carry out their function again as they seemed dead. He had his head bowed. He clang tightly to the second hand school bag his mother had gotten for him in preparation for his schooling to hide his disquietness. How he wish his mother had followed him like yesterday. After what happened day before, the head mistress had accepted to help Umar as much as she could.

He was interviewed and confirmed fitted to be in primary in lieu of nursery classes because of his intelligence and his smartness. He was more than excited. The happiness could not even allowed him to doze not to talk of sleeping. He was busy telling his mother how active and relevant he was going to be in school, how hard he was going to work and how bold he was going to be. But here he was, in front of the class, rooted in a spot unable to move.

He was aware of many eyes on him and the sound of the teacher's shoe which was drawing nearer to him. He didn't move an inch from where he stood.

The man bent down to level with Umar, he lifted his head.

"Jimoh Umar?" he tried to remember his name as had been informed about the new student that will be in his class day before.

"yes" he answered with a nod trying his best to hold the teacher's gaze as it was making him more uncomfortable.

"ok, my name is Mr. Obadagbagbe I am your class teacher. You can call me Obas. He added with a smile to ease his going tension

He straightened himself and took him by his hand. He dragged him to the front of the class as the latter forcefully moving his stiffed legs.

Other students looked on bewildered as they watched situational irony unfolding. They had expected their teacher to send the new student in over size white shirt and green trouser back to his parent to get a fitted one like theirs but here is that teacher holding and walking the same student to the front of the class.

"hello student" he said to get full attention of the students.

"hello sir" they responded in unison.

"This is Jimoh Umar, a new student as at now. And I want you to accept him as friend and partner, understand?"

"yes sir" they chorus.

The teacher pointed to Kemi's direction where an empty seat was available.

He was conscious of different gazes on him with silence that accompanied him to his seat.

He dropped his bag and sat down gently. He selected one of his new books, ready for the coming lesson.

Deep down within him, he knew that something is awaiting him. But good or bad, he knew not

The Reigning King college

The environment was very quiet aside from occasional discussion from classes that could be heard. Umar looked around and was impressed at the beauty and arc structure of the school. He observed that different flowers were actually planted to different places.

Varieties of Rose flowers such as red rose, white rose, purple and so on were planted to adored the front of the classrooms. He also sighted rosy spine and sky rocket flowers at both sides of pavements narrowed down to offices. Thanks to their neighbour's son who usually brought calendars for them to play. That was where he had seen and memorized their name with his friends.

Umar, hand in hand with his mother, worked further into school premises and was appalled at the feelings it brought to him. He couldn't help the smile that cracked his face at the sight of what seemed as a new world to him. He chuckled a little and lifted his face to meet his mother's smiling face.

He knew that his mother was only person that always bring him happiness and satisfaction. He sworn in his mind never to make his mother cry

***************************

In a very spacious room, beautifully decorated with various wallpapers, posters and calendars. A woman in her early forties sat on the chair behind a large official table. A lots of files but neatly arranged with some stationery occupied both sides of the table. She was fair in complexion, slim body with a round face. She had her hair plaited in corn roll. Her name was Mrs Okeleye Aanuoluwa, the headmistress of the school.

The door was slightly opened and entered a young lady of about twenty three years of age in a sky blue suit and a black pair of shoe. She bowed a little.

"good morning Ma" she greeted.

"good morning Miss Aisha, how are you?" Mrs Okeleye responded.

"fine Ma"

"how was your holiday?"

"it was splendid ma" "how about yours" she added with a smile.

"We thank God" she answered excitedly.

"I want you to duplicate this new timetable for this session into eight copies and distributed it to all the classrooms and the offices" she handed it to her. Miss Aisha took it by slightly bent down and worked out of the office.

Mrs Okeleye was busy with next file on her table when she noticed two people walked into her office. "Good morning ma" Aliya greeted as she came closer to Mrs Okeleye. The headmistress lifted her gaze to see a thirty six year old woman with a baggy eyes and wrinkle on her face. She was black, not too tall and not too short. "good morning, how may I help you mam?" she replied.

The woman smiled shyly still holding her son while standing. The head mistress pointed to chairs in her front for the woman to sit on with her son. She sat down and muttered "thank you" to the head mistress and smiled again. It was then Mrs Okeleye spotted a gap between her front teeth. Despite her old look, she was still beautiful somehow.

"My name is Aliya and this is Umar, my only son. I want him to be admitted to this school, that is why I'm here ma."Aliya responded bringing back the other woman from her thought.

Mrs Okeleye looked at Aliya with kind of unbelievable gaze. Aliya wondered what might have wrong in what she had said or still, it could be her dressing the woman was worried about. She readjusted her cloth.

"what make you think you are going to afford the fees?" the head mistress queried her.

"I am determined to give it all it takes just to see that my son has a standard education which I want but couldn't get.
Even if it meant to be another person's slave to finance his education or do any odd job, I'm ready to go any length to take good care of my son" Aliya said with a shaky voice already had water forming in her eyes.

Mrs Okeleye shook her head in pity and wondered what could have make Aliya to be so emotional over simple question. The woman's display of emotion prompted her to ask more question.

"what happen to you madam" she asked while holding the woman's right hand with hers.

Aliya's body shook violently as she remembered the most painful memory of her life. She had tried to forget every thing and concentrated on making future but that crazy memory surely knew how to pop up whenever she was happy or alone. She later realised that she has to live with it.

She fought back the tears that were threaten to fall down. Unfortunately, she failed as the tears fell down in torrent. She swallowed thick bitter saliva down throat.

She looked straight into the woman holding her in the eyes "it was a long story which I don't wish to discuss now" she said eventually.

All this while, Umar was looking at the two woman. Even though he did not understand what was making his mother cry, he knew that it was not a palatable event to make it unadressable.

He shifted uncomfortably where he sat on. Seeing his mother in that state usually make his bowel heat up.

The new breeze blew in through partially opened window. Crow of a cock could be heard behind their old muddy house of six bedrooms. She tossed from left to right side of sleeping mat she slept on with her only son.

She sat up and rested her back on the wall. Aliya starred at her sleeping son on the floor with excitement and new hope. Umar was five years of age. "today is going to be another chapter of our life" she thought to herself. The first step towards achieving her goal and the foundation for his future. She sworn in her mind to give it all it took to make that foundation strong as much as it could.

Umar gave a little wince as ever clever and disturbing creatures of night were sucking blood from his slim body. Aliya tried to kill those mosquitoes but they had already gone. She sprung up and pulled Him up as he robbed his face and yawned. It was going to be his first day in school finally.

01

I was running late for my own damn party and was getting quite pissed about it. I had been driving around for over fifteen minutes now, trying to find a free parking spot, but had been unsuccessful. I wondered which one of my dumb friends had come up with the bright idea to hold the party at this particularly over crowded night club.

I probably shouldn't take out my frustration on my friends but I couldn't help the feeling of irritation. Aside from being unable to park, some girl had been disturbing my phone all day with her calls and it had also gotten me quite pissed.

As if on cue the phone buzzed again silently and I glanced at the caller ID.

“Rita.” I murmured with a roll of my eyes and slight shake of my head.

Would this girl just get it already? How else would I get her to understand that I wasn't the type to commit to a serious relationship, what we'd had was supposed to be a playful fling between adults.

If I’d known she would become this clingy, I wouldn't have begun the fling with her. I had never for once lied to her, I’d thought we’d been on the same page. From the start, I had told her I wasn't a relationship person and she had agreed that she also wasn't looking for anything serious.

She had seemed like a fun girl who wasn't looking to shackle any guy to herself and now I didn't know what had changed. I didn't understand why she had suddenly decided she wanted me for keeps.

She had called me up early this morning to wish me a happy birthday and then suddenly asked if she could take me out to a quiet dinner in the evening. I had casually informed her my guys were organising a guys only party at a club and she had suddenly flared up. Shouting and screaming over the phone at me like I had a promised her something without keeping to it.

I had decided she was probably getting too attached and had tried letting her off easily but she was refusing to accept that I wanted a clean break. What more was a guy supposed to do? I wondered.

Finally, I found a spot and guided the Ford Edge quickly into it before someone else stole it. Switching off the engine, I took my wallet and phone just as the call came in again.

“For the love of …..” I cursed, plugging in the Bluetooth earplugs into my ears and switching it on from the control which I wore under the collar of my shirt. I'd had enough of this babe’s nonsense.

“Rita, what's this now? Why are you harassing me like this?” I asked heatedly, getting out of the car and closing the door behind me.

“Dave?.....” Her voice was calmer now. She had probably taken a chill pill or something or was trying a different approach. “Bae, why are you talking like this? Why are you treating me this way after all we shared, how can you just leave me...how can you just say we need a break and expect me to accept it...after everything?...... Did it mean nothing to you?”

“Rita…” I breathed in, struggling for calm and patience as I hated being harsh to females. I tried to respect them, my mother had raised a gentleman. “When we began this you assured me that you were not looking for anything serious….. That we were in this for the fun of it. So why are you now asking if it meant something to me? Did I ever make this out to be more than what it was? Did I ever tell you it was more than a casual fling?”

“Yeah…..Dave, I know it started out that way but now I feel so much for you…. I never planned for this to happen, but it just did…. What's the problem? Is there something wrong with me that you don't like?”

David ran a hand over his short hair quite frustrated. “Rita...you are perfect. There's nothing wrong with you...it's me who has a problem because I can't be the man you want me to be…. You're beautiful and fun but I am not looking for a committed relationship at the moment. Can you understand that?”

I asked her, hoping she accepted the ‘it's not you, it's me’ excuse I gave her and praying that she didn't drag it any longer. I was out of patience and very late.

She was silent for all of two seconds before speaking up again. “I…. I don't have a choice but to, do I? I really don't enjoy bugging you like this but i did, because I thought we could work something out. We...we seemed so good together… well, it seems I have to accept it, I guess.”

I breathed a sigh of relief at her proclamation, mentally screaming ‘hallelujah!’.

“Good…” I began, meaning to end the call quickly but she continued.

“.. but I am still willing to go on as we were.”

‘No way.’ I thought with a shake of my head. “No, Rita, please… I couldn't do that to you. Not when you have feelings for me like this. You need to find someone who can love you back, someone who is deserving of all you have to offer instead of wasting your feelings on me…. I can't give you what you really need….please you've got to understand. “

I heard her sigh, or was it a sniff? Was she crying? Gosh I felt like such a bastard for doing this to her but was it really my fault? If I had known this would be the end result of the fling, I never would have started it.

“Are you okay, Rita?”

“Yeah, I guess I will be fine.” She said quietly. “I will miss you….”

“I know, I'll miss you also.” I said truthfully, every woman was special in her own way, I knew this even if I couldn't bring himself to fall for them.

“You're a bastard, you know that right?” She asked with a shaky nervous laughter and I laughed also.

“I agree.”

“You made me fall for you and now you’re leaving me.”

I could argue that it was the other way around, that she let herself fall for him but i wouldn't tell her that. That wasn't what she needed to hear at the moment.

“I swear it wasn't intentional.” i replied. “You're a special girl Ritz and you'll find the right guy for you.”

“Thanks.,..bye Dave.” She said.

“Bye.” I said cutting the call, a huge feeling of relief washing over me.

Glad that I was finally done with that and realising I was really late for the party, I suddenly turned around to make for the club's entrance when I crashed into someone else who had been behind me.

“Oww” the feminine voice complained, losing her balance, her petite figure stumbling backwards.

I reached out reflexively to catch her before she hit the floor. One of my hands grabbed one slender arm and the other cradled her waist as I pulled her up to myself, taking in a whiff of the perfume she wore and instantly falling in love with the scent.

Stunned and entranced, I stared at the prettiest big brown eyes I had seen in awhile. Framed by lush dark lashes, they seemed to take up most part of her small oval shaped face. Her blonde weave which fell backwards in careless waves complimented her light creamy complexion while her dark lashes contrasted sharply against it, giving her round eyes, a sultry, dark, mysterious and sexy look.

I wasn't sure for how long I stared into those entrancing eyes but reality struck when she moved her heart shaped lips.

“Okay, if you are done ogling me, can you let go?” She asked and instantly, I straighten up, setting her on her own feet and creating some space between us.

For such a small petite figured girl with a China doll face, she had a low, slightly husky voice tinged with a heavy American drawl. It had come out so effortlessly that I was sure she wasn't faking or forming.

“I'm sorry.” I managed to croak and she raised a brow as if considering my apology.

“For almost pushing me to the ground or for staring like you haven't seen another human before?”

I couldn't help the small smile that touched my lips although I doubted she meant to be funny from the look on her face which clearly spelt annoyance.

“I wasn't looking, I…” I tried explaining hoping she'd soften by she raised her hand in my face and I stopped.

“Yeah whatever…. Just look out next time before you actually trample someone down… or probably just get a pair of glasses to help you see clearly.” She said dismissively, brushing past me.

I turned, my eyes following her, zoning in on her nicely rounded butt clad in a tight black sequinned miniskirt that barely dropped below her butt. The tight, body hugging lace top she wore although high necked, was transparent at the back and I admired how her exposed light skin contrasted sharply against the black lace.

Unknowingly, I seemed to be smiling for some weird reason that I wasn't sure of. I wasn't sure if it was because she was hot or because of her sass, but I was in admiration of her. She had my full attention now and I briefly forgot about my party.

I could easily tell from the way she walked, she had spunk, class and that was the type that I got drawn to. Feisty girls were hot, especially under the sheets.
