Update: Sotitobire Founder appears in court, remanded again till further notice.

…journalists barred from covering the proceedings

Politics / NAOSS Backs Akeredolu, And Southwest Governors, On ‘operation Amotekun’ by Ashleyeniwin(f): 2:31pm On Jan 17, 2020
NAOSS backs Akeredolu, and SouthWest Governors

The national executives of the National Association of Ondo State Students, NAOSS, yesterday expressed their support for the recently launched security outfit codenamed ‘Operation Amotekun’ in the South-West states.

The student leaders during their courtesy visit to the Chairman, South West Governors’ Forum and governor of Ondo State, Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Akeredolu in his office, particularly lauded the governor and his South West counterparts for showing interest in the security of lives and property of their people who gave them their mandates.

Speaking through the National President of NAOSS, Ayoade Kikiowo, the students said Operation Amotekun is the way to go going by the various security challenges including kidnapping, killings, banditry and other criminal activities being confronted by the South-West zone.

According to them, the launch of Amotekun showed that the governors are responsible and responsive to the plight of the people in the region.

They also applauded governor Akeredolu for his various infrastructural projects such as construction and renovation of public schools through SUBEB, aggressive road construction and rehabilitation across the 18 Local Government Areas of the state among others.

The NAOSS executives described governor Akeredolu as a focus and committed leader of his people, urging him to continue the good works to further make lives comfortable for the people across the state.

Responding, governor Akeredolu saluted the student leaders for their good approach to leadership, just as he commended them for appreciating what his administration was doing in all sectors to develop the state and the people.

On Amotekun, governor Akeredolu emphasised that it is the duty of the governors to protect the lives and property of the people who elected them into offices, saying security of lives of his people is very important to him.

The governor also used the occasion to encourage the young graduates in the state to embrace various windows of opportunities open to them in the areas of agriculture, entrepreneurship and many others, to make them employers of labour rather than looking for white-collar jobs which are no longer available.

He said his administration was ready to give them all necessary support and work with them to make them successful.

NAOS also decorated the Governor as their Grand Patron.

Health / AAUA: Our Health Centre Has Significantly Improved by Ashleyeniwin(f): 5:25pm On Jan 16, 2020
AAUA: Our Health Centre has significantly improved

From Roland Bayode, Deborah Omoare
Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko (AAUA), has denied reports that its Health Centre operates ‘below expectation’.
The management is reacting to a CAMPUSLIFE cover story on the second of this month where some CAMPUSLIFE correspondents interviewed some students of the institution that shared mixed views about the state of the facility.

Director of the Health Centre, Dr Mathew Igboku, admitted that things were once rough at the centre, adding that at present, the situation has improved.
Speaking with CAMPUSLIFE, Igboku said the Health Centre has just introduced a new scheme known as Tertiary Institute Social Health Insurance Programme (TSHIP), which aims at ensuring adequate and proper treatment of students.
According to him, every student is expected to pay certain amount of money for the scheme, which is already included in their school fees.

Said Igboku: “In the past, we did not have enough drugs to give to patients but things are different now.
“Every student is expected to pay for TSHIP, which is written somewhere on the school fee receipt. This takes care of the drugs we give to students. The good thing about this scheme is that we use money gotten from TSHIP to treat students who have not paid their school fees and those who have paid.
Through TSHIP, we now have a good and regular supply of drugs. Therefore, the problem of sourcing for money to buy drugs is gone.”
Igboku disclosed that the scheme also covers the treatment of severe cases like minor surgery and the likes.

He added: “Another thing I need to clarify is that when we refer a patient to the state hospital, the person does not have to pay for anything if he or she has paid the school fees.
This is also under the TSHIP arrangement. The state hospital will send the bill to the organisation covering the health centre, which is known as Health Maintenance Organisation.
This organisation will pick up the bill. At the health centre, we have performed minor surgeries, cured tooth problems and other significant treatments.”

Igboku further explained that the functionality of the scheme is not limited to the school health centre only but also functions in any hospital that is NHIS (National Health Insurance Scheme) accredited.
“If you are residing in Lagos and you are sick, you can go to any hospital that is NHIS accredited. When you go there, and you call us that you are a registered student and have paid your school fees, that hospital will treat you free of charge and send the bills to the Health Management Organisation. However, you must have confirmed from us through a phone call. We are pleading with students to pay their school fees so that TSHIP will continue to function effectively,” he said.
Igboku urged students to desist from self-medication and consult the centre for any health issue.
“I have met some students who indulge in self-medication. Some even end up spending over N2000 on drugs instead of spending it on feeding.
I want to admonish every student to visit the Health Centre whenever they are ill, especially those who have paid their school fees, and those who have not when it is an emergency.

TSHIP covers almost all the drugs that a patient needs, but if there is need for any specific drug, and it is not under the coverage of TSHIP, then the patient can talk to his/her guardian. Also, if it is something we cannot do at the Health Centre, we would refer the patient to a state hospital,” he explained.
He advised students to henceforth the facility regularly.
“It must be noted that we attend to only emergency from 2:00pm.
“If you have catarrh and come to the Health Centre to complain at the wrong time, you will be given only paracetamol. If you have any complaint, come between the hours of 8a.m. and 2p.m. Students should come to the centre at the right time, but if it is an emergency, you can come anytime.

“However, if a patient that has not paid his/her school fees and is being referred (that is not an emergency case), the hospital will find it difficult sending the person’s bills to HMO, and the amount they pay if a patient is being referred to a state hospital is more than N2000. So, we implore students to pay their TSHIP dues because it has many advantages,“ he added

Nairaland / General / Revoke BEDC Operating License –consumers by Ashleyeniwin(f): 7:25pm On Jan 06, 2020
Revoke BEDC operating license –Consumers

Electricity consumers and stakeholders in Ondo State have again restated their call for the revocation of the operating license of the Benin Electricity Distribution Company, BEDC.

The consumers attributed their calls to the epileptic power supply in many communities and total blackout in several parts of the state.

Across the state’s three Senatorial Districts, residents who spoke with The Hope called for the withdrawal of the operating license of BEDC.

They hinged their reasons on the epileptic power supply and the outrageous bills they are being forced to pay even when they have not used same.

According to them, electricity consumers are being fleeced every month and forced to pay for darkness.

Speaking with our reporter, a cleric, Reverend Canon Isaac Awowole of Saint John’s Anglican, Oyin Akoko in Akoko North West Local Government of Ondo State said the power distribution company has only succeeded in adding to the plight of the ordinary man.

Awowole stated that allowing BEDC to be in charge of electricity in its region of coverage is like continuing to put the people in bondage.

The cleric said apart from putting the people in perpetual darkness, the company has continued to defraud them by forcing them to pay for what they have not used.

He therefore called on the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and other relevant financial crime agencies to investigate the activities of the company and make it pay back whatever it has taken and does not belong to it.

Rating the services of BEDC as very terrible, Canon Awowole said that many artisans who relied on electricity for their operations are now becoming idle and had left their jobs.

Pastor Idowu Adebayo who is the president of Owo Unity Group, said the activities and services of BEDC were nothing to write home about.

According to him, the power distribution company has failed the people, since they have added to the woes of the people instead of ameliorating them.

According to him, electricity consumers in Ondo, Ekiti, Edo and Delta states only enjoy electricity for two days in every week but are charged outrageous bills every month.

“Consumers only enjoy electricity for two days in a week and at the end of the month they bring bills of N10,000, N20,000 and up to N35, 000.00”.

He therefore said that to allow BEDC continue to operate is like asking the people to continue to pay for living in darkness.

The Hope visited some communities in Akure to assess the electricity supply situation in each of the communities.

It was gathered that many communities in Akure only have power supply for three hours in a day and many times, there may not be power supply for 48 hours.

Speaking with The Hope, Chairman Landlords’ Association, Oluwadare 2, Mr Akindolu Ebenezer told our correspondent that there has not been any power supply in his community and 18 others for over a year and despite series of letters and meetings with the officials of BEDC and other stakeholders in the power sector, saying nothing had been done except empty promises.

According to him, despite the fact that residents of the community contributed money to procure a transformer by themselves after providing wires and poles within the community, they called upon BEDC for installation, the outfit had not yielded that request.

“Procurement of transformer is not the responsibility of a community. All the poles and wires were done by the community but immediately we did it, BEDC will come and start giving us exorbitant bills for installation,” he said.

In his own opinion, the Landlords’ Association Chairman of Information Village, Mr Olanrewaju Oluwateru described the electricity situation in his community and Akure in general as “erratic” and “epileptic”.

Oluwateru also condemned the unfair distribution of electricity to certain areas in Akure, where he alleged that BEDC officials extort money from the residents.

At Ago Ireti, along Oba Ile road, The Hope also gathered that electricity supply within the settlement had been precarious.

According to the Secretary to the Settlement, Mr Tunji Oluwatimileyin, many a times, there would not be power supply to the settlement for a week and during the new year celebration, there was no power supply as well.

He added that BEDC is a private organisation that is only after profit. “if the license is withdrawn, it is a welcome development, I pray the federal government will do the needful for the future of the younger ones”

Also speaking, Sir Adeyinka Adeyosoye said this has rendered youths jobless, particularly the artisans. The BEDC is the worst in terms of service delivery and the woman at the helms of affair has been unapologetic about some areas of the State without power for years.

A Hotelier in Ore, headquarters of Odigbo Local Government, Mr Tope Ariyo said government should explore alternative source of generating electricity after revoking the license of BEDC.

Speaking with The Hope, BEDC Public Relations Officer for Ondo and Ekiti, Mr Kayode Brown said epileptic power supply in Ondo State was as a result of poor energy generation from the national grid, saying the company could only distribute the numbers of mega watts accrued to it which depends on what is generated from the national grid.

Brown said that the company is entitled to only nine percent of whatever is being generated converted in terms of mega watts.

“The only generation we have is Omotosho power supply, they are more concentrated in Delta State. These are the people who are responsible for the production of electricity for the national grid”.

Politics / PDP, A Frustrated Minority Party In Ondo—ojogo by Ashleyeniwin(f): 10:59pm On Jan 03, 2020
PDP, a frustrated minority party in Ondo—Ojogo

Donald Ojogo, the Ondo State Commissioner for Information and Orientation, in this interview by HAKEEM GBADAMOSI, speaks on the people’s expectations and government desires for 2020. He also reacts to some claims of the main opposition party, the Peoples Democratic Party (APC), ahead this year’s governorship election in the state.

Q- This is an election year in the state, what should be the people’s expectation from the Governor Rotimi Akeredolu-led administration ahead the governorship election?

A- The year 2020 is the year of a lot of expectations; it will be the year of expectation from the electorate and the people of Ondo State in general. It is also the year of desires on the part of the government because there are several things that are ongoing that should be taken to the destination of our minds. There are so many things that the state government is trying to initiate in form of projects. This year is promising on all sides. The first and most important thing we desire from God is long life and peace for all of us to witness those good things in 2020.

Q- The governor will inaugurate some projects to mark his third year in office, ahead the election. Don’t you think people will see this as a political gimmick to buy their votes or is it a mere coincidence?

A- Well, if you say it is coincidental, you are correct and if you say it is strategic on the part of government to complete them as you have said, it is still yes because we ought to have completed these particular projects before now because our desire was not just to keep them in abeyance.

I don’t think it is a political gimmick, but if you say so, you might not be totally wrong. What is even wrong if we commission them and make them our campaign points? Fine, because one of the reasons this government came into power is to be able to bring development closer to the people and if there are one or two things that have been initiated by the government in form of projects and they are likely to be commissioned in an election year, so be it. It is a plus to any government to have tangible things to point to when it is the time to campaign. So, we thank God that we have a lot of things to point out during our campaign period.

Q- But the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has called on the people not to expect any miracle from your government because, according to the party, it has failed the people of Ondo State. How will you react to that?

A- I never expected anybody in the PDP to say anything different from what you have reportedly said. The government that has, within three years, taken very courageous steps in terms of developmental initiatives that have surpassed the previous years of the PDP government that was in place in the state, how would any PDP person commend such a government that is performing? No right-thinking PDP man will clap for this government. That is the truth. So, if they are not clapping for us, we won’t be angry and we are not even taking it in any negative form. That is the duty of the opposition and if they are not saying that, who will say it? But the truth of the matter is that whoever is saying that is just trying to echo the mindset of the frustrated minority. Whatever they are saying is the voice of the frustrated minority.

Q- The PDP spokesperson, sometime ago, challenged the level of transparency of your government in the execution of projects. What is your take on the party’s position?

A - If he acknowledged the fact that projects are executed, that is fair enough of him. But in respect of the other leg which he intends to know much about namely, if the projects executed were transparently done, the books are there. Why do we have the ministries of budget and finance? Let them go to the two ministries and verify. They can take a maximum advantage and leverage on the Freedom of Information Act. Let them come out with facts and figures. Our books are clean and transparent enough; this government is courageously accountable to the people. So, if they feel some projects have been done, I salute their courage for saying that. Where they feel there was no transparency or accountability in the course of the execution of those projects, it is left for them. We are very serious in delivering good governance and we cannot add the burden of trying to get facts for the opposition. That can’t be added to the duties of government. They must do that; they should not be lazy.

Q- Governor Akeredolu will be so busy attending to more state and political engagements this year. Won’t that affect governance and his health?

A- I can assure you that no government activities will be affected in any way. Since 2016 that government came into place, alongside major political activities in 2015 and 2019, nothing was affected in governance and 2020 will not be different. Payment of salaries will not be affected in 2020. Governor Akeredolu prioritises the welfare of workers in the state and that resolve is unwavering in him and we have all inculcated the belief that the welfare of workers is paramount. Politics cannot take the shine off the welfare of workers in the state. I can assure you on that.

On the health issue, unless someone is still trying to play the role of the governor’s physician, we have gone past that with gratitude to God. Undesirable and unmerited expectations have been kept at bay. I can tell you that Mr Governor has been full of vigour since he came back. He is focused and stronger to continue the good work.

Q- The opposition party accused the governor of lavishing the state fund on his daughter’s wedding in Mauritius, by sponsoring members of his cabinet and lawmakers in the state. What is your reaction?

A- I remember in my response to that pedestrian story, I made it clear that the few cabinet members who were not more than five attended in their personal capacities. These are not just puerile but pernicious stories powered largely by ignorance on the part of those responsible. Does it not turn logic in the head to think those who attended the wedding did not have the capacity to pay their bills before being appointed as cabinet members?

For the records, the governor never mentioned it at cabinet or at any meeting that his daughter was wedding in Mauritius. He kept it to himself and made it a wholly private affair. In any case, a national daily even wrote an editorial on it, but we felt it was not worth any efforts to respond because such will only drag us into an avoidable conflict. I believe the editorial was largely influenced by what was available to the paper, and that it was outright misinformation that was given to the public was also given to that credible platform. But in this case, it was a hasty and jaundiced judgment.

The truth remains that Akeredolu did not organise his son’s wedding in Canada when he became governor. The couple in question had wedded long before he was even nominated as governorship candidate. It is the tradition in the family for Akeredolu’s children to do their traditional marriage in Nigeria and choose anywhere in the world for the white wedding. It didn’t just start today. It is just laughable that a man, who refuses to charter a private jet with state funds even though it is not disallowed, will spend same on the wedding of his daughter abroad.

Politics / Akeredolu's Giant Strides In Rural Communities Development by Ashleyeniwin(f): 10:33am On Dec 27, 2019
Akeredolu's giant strides in rural communities development

The Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Odunayo Akeredolu-led administration which came into being on Friday, February 24, 2017 came up with a comprehensive change policy and programme blueprint tagged ‘Blueprint to Progress' which is anchored on five cardinal programmes, popularly known as Platforms for Change and is encapsulated in the acronym JMPPR. The R in the series represents ‘Rural Development and Community Extension Services'. Rural development and a strong agricultural sector reduce poverty and form the basis for sustainable economic development at all levels. The only way to stem the rural exodus, which is driving more and more rural inhabitants into the cities in search of a greener pasture is to strengthen the economic base of the rural communities and offer people in the rural areas a secure future.

Until the coming on board of the Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Odunayo Akeredolu-led administration in Ondo State the living conditions of the people in the rural areas of the state are very poor. Poverty and hunger are widespread, basic services are not guaranteed while schools and hospitals are frequently inaccessible.

Since his inauguration as the Executive Governor of Ondo State, Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Odunayo Akeredolu has continued to show uncommon commitment to his pact with the people to ensure the transformation of the rural areas of the state through the Directorate of Rural and Community Development and the two World Bank-assisted Agencies under the Directorate; the Ondo State Community and Social Development Agency (ODCSDA) and the Rural Access and Agricultural Marketing Project (RAAMP).

In June 2019, Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu rejigged his cabinet by effecting some major reshufflements. These major shake-ups in the administration brought onboard Hon. Babatunde Gabriel Kolawole who just completed his term as a Member of the Federal House of Representatives representing Akoko South East/Akoko South West Federal Constituency. On being sworn in July 4, 2019, Hon. Babatunde Gabriel Kolawole who is popularly known as the Amaechi of Ondo State was assigned the portfolio of the Special Adviser to the Governor on Rural and Community Development. Thus, he is to oversee the implementation of one of the five (5) point agenda of the present administration in the state which is Rural Development and Community Extension Services through the Directorate of Rural and Community Development.

The mandate of the Directorate of Rural and Community Development is to redress generation of the neglect of rural communities in the state in the following ways:

i.mobilize and empower the rural populace to create wealth through increased agriculture, industrial and other productive activities;

ii.promote the expansion of the production base of the rural economy through the creation and expansion of agricultural enterprises;

iii.provide rural support services needed to bring about increased production of goods and services and raise rural production in general; and

iv.improve the productivity of human resources in the rural communities; develop the rural area and raise the quality of life of the rural dwellers.

In line with the above-outlined mandate, the Directorate under the watch of Hon. Babatunde Gabriel Kolawole, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Rural and Community Development has carried out needs assessment exercise tagged ‘bottom-up approach' across the three senatorial districts to ensure that the felt-needs of the people are met. The exercise provided our rural dwellers the rare opportunity of deciding projects to be executed in the their various localities. Earlier, a pre-needs assessment appraisal stakeholders' meeting was held inside the newly renovated and well-furnished Conference Hall of the Directorate at the State Secretariat Annex along Ilesha/Owo Expressway in Akure to sensitize participants and seek their cooperation on the scheduled needs assessment exercise. It is pertinent to point out here that the Conference Hall was in a very deplorable state until the recent renovation work carried out under the leadership of Hon. Babatunde Gabriel Kolawole. Participants at the said stakeholders' meeting include Local Council Caretaker Chairmen, royal fathers, experts, religious leaders, civil society organizations, market women, youth organizations and Directors of Community Development Department in the eighteen local government areas . Inputs from the field officers and experts engaged for the weeklong exercise have been Incorporated into the 2020 budget of the Directorate. In effect, projects to be executed by the Directorate in the coming year(s) will be those that have direct impact on the people and it will, as well, eliminate duplication of projects. This is a clear departure from the past when government adopted the top-bottom approach in projects execution.

Also, top officials of the Directorate of Rural and Community Development recently embarked on a statewide tour to have first-hand information about abandoned projects initiated by the defunct Ministry of Community and Co-operative Services under previous administrations with a view to completing them for use of the benefitting communities.

The inauguration of the Community Development Committees (CDCs) at the ward level across the eighteen local government areas of Ondo State by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Rural and Community Development Hon. Babatunde Gabriel Kolawole is to further enhance the participation of the people at the grassroot in projects documentation and implementation. Under this programme, ten (10) people which include community leaders, religious leaders, market women, youths, Community Development Association officials, farmers and retired civil servants were selected across the 203 wards. They are being empowered to initiate and monitor projects in their various wards.

The Directorate of Rural and Community Development which is being supervised by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Rural and Community Development, Hon. Babatunde Gabriel Kolawole, has two World Bank-assisted Agencies (ODCSDA and RAAMP) under its watch.

The Ondo State Community and Social Development Agency (ODCSDA) uses the bottom-to-top approach, where communities apply for intervention in the provision of social amenities in form of Micro-Projects. Community and Social Development Project (CSDP) is a Community Driven Development (CDD) Project focusing on building and rebuilding social and natural resource infrastructure services at the community level.

The overall goal of the CSDP is improved access to services for human development, while the Project Development Objective is to sustainably increase access of poor people to social and natural resource infrastructure services. The CSDP seeks to promote the human development of poor people at the grass root level using a CDD approach. It is for this reason that the CSDP is set to contribute to an overall goal of improved access to services for human development.

It is gratifying to add here that the Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Odunayo Akeredolu-led administration has shown commendable impacts in its efforts at raising the standard of living in the rural communities across Ondo State. We are not just witnessing transformation in our rural communities, there is an all round development in all other sectors of the state. No doubt, the present administration has demonstrated uncommon commitment to all articles of its JMPPR blueprint as a proven effective roadmap for the execution of the developmental plans and projects for the state. This blueprint is anchored on five (5) cardinal programmes. They are: (1) Job Creation through Agriculture, Entrepreneurship and Industrialisation; (2) Massive Infrastructural Development and Maintenance; (3) Provision of Functional Education and Technological Growth; (4) Provision of Accessible and Qualitative Health Care and Social Service Delivery; (5) Rural Development and Community Extension Services.

Politics / Akeredolu Builds New Government House Chapel by Ashleyeniwin(f): 9:20pm On Dec 18, 2019
AKEREDOLU BUILDS NEW GOVERNMENT HOUSE CHAPEL

Ondo State Governor, Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, SAN, has built a new Government House Chapel at the Governor’s Lodge, Alagbaka, Akure.

The Governor said the building of the worship center was conceived by the administration of former Governor Olusegun Mimiko.

Governor Akeredolu said his administration, however, redesigned the foundation that was put in place by the former administration and constructed a befitting Chapel, adding that nothing was too much to give to God.

The former Governor, Dr. Mimiko, and retired Chief Judge of the state, Justice Sehinde Kumuyi were among the dignitaries who joined Governor Akeredolu for the Dedication and Consecration of the Chapel at the Government House on Wednesday.

Scores of Religious leaders, including the Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) Rev. Ayo Oladapo, labour leaders and other prominent personalities were at the Dedication and Consecration service.

Ondo State Governor, Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, SAN, has said the Festival of Arts and Culture (ARTFEST) will drive more development in the state by projecting its rich cultural heritage to the world.

The Governor said his administration’s commitment to the development of the arts, culture and tourism sector of the state was part of his vision to explore the socio-economic potentials of arts and culture to drive tourism development, create employment and empower the people.

The Governor spoke at the opening ceremony of the 2019 Festival of Arts and Culture, held at the MKO Abiola Democracy Park, Akure.

The Aare Ona Kakanfo of Yorubaland, Otunba Gani Adams, graced the event, which also featured musical artists like Demola Suzi, Saint Janet and others.

The event, which was also supported by Nigerian Breweries, was filled with funfare and massive turnout.

Arakunrin Akeredolu said the Ondo Artfest platform will help to create wealth, using art and culture for employment generation and opening up the state for investors and tourists with the aim to improve the economy.

He said the Artfest template will also create the platform for various artistes to showcase their talents and propagate rich cultural heritage of the state to the outside world.

Governor Akeredolu said: ”You will agree with me that cultural festivals, such as the ARTFEST offer the perfect opportunity to experience the very best of our unique culture, which is the embodiment of our ways of life.

“More than anything else, this festival is a celebration of life. The joy of living is something every person can embrace.

"Today, with so much attention focused on the things that separate us, this festival is, however, an affirmation of elements which bind us together in a common quest to enjoy living, hence the theme TOGETHERNESS.

“Culture is a mould for uniting the people. We are therefore not unaware of the power of arts and culture to promote unity, peace, social integration and harmony in our society.

“Ondo state has a lot to showcase in the area of culture given the fact that every community in the state is uniquely endowed. We are indeed a people of rich culture which can be described as a true reflection of "a state of unity in cultural diversity.”

Speaking earlier, Aare Gani Adams urged tourists and investors to come to the state, adding that the state is safe for investment and tourism.
