As momentum gathers for the 2019 general elections, former president Olusegun Obasanjo has settled for the Gombe state governor, Alhaji Ibrahim Dankwambo, as the next option to rule the country after ailing President Mohammadu Buhari.



According to a report from Nigerian Concord’s source, Obasanjo who made his decision to support Dankwambo for the 2019 presidential poll known at a high level meeting with leaders of the party and his associates at his Otta, Ogun state residence recently, also disclosed that he had concluded plans to rejoin the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in order for the party to reclaim power in the next general elections.



[b]At the meeting which had the presence of a top Obasanjo’s associate, Otunba Oyewole Fasawe, and others like Alao Akala, Olusola Oke, Olagunsoye Oyinlola and Rashidi Ladoja, the former president didn’t hide his love that former governor Sule Lamido of Jigawa state should rule Nigeria by 2019 [/b]but stated that he feared that the ruling APC would use the EFCC to scuttle the plans as a result of the corruption charges against him and his two sons.

On this, Obasanjo was quoted as telling his visitors and associates that Lamido would have ruled and transformed Nigeria had former president Jonathan allowed a credible PDP primary election in 2014 where he (Lamido) would have picked the party’s presidential ticket .

The former president added that there was no way the APC people would have been able to use their Change Mantra to sweep off the PDP if it was Lamido whom he said had a good administrative record that flew the PDP’s flag.

Obasanjo who showed his dissatisfaction towards the Buhari-led APC administration was said to have clearly told his listeners at the meeting which lasted for about three hours that he had equally seen the qualities which he saw in Lamido in 2015 in Dankwambo whom he described as a good administrator, achiever, pace setter and bridge builder.

Speaking on his plan to rejoin the PDP, one of Obasanjo’s associates who was the major initiator of the said meeting hinted that the former president didn’t hide his love for the PDP having said that APC had failed him and the country.

The former president also explained that the APC had relented in the promises they made to develop the country, a reason he said made him to openly throw his weights behind Mohammadu Buhari then.

The associate told this newspaper that: ” Baba is back to the PDP and will work for the success of the party as long as those that made him to angrily step aside in 2014 aren’t imposed on the party by its leadership again”

On Obasanjo’s membership card which was torn by him according to media reports, the associate said the former president as part of his loyalty to the PDP also entered his room during the meeting and brought out his membership card for his gues[/s]ts and associates to see.

[s]The Senior Special Assistant to President Mohammed Buhari on Prosecutions, Chief Okoi Obono-Obla has taken issue with former President Goodluck Jonathan’s remarks during a Peoples Democratic Party convention, concerning his administration.

Former President Jonathan had said that his administration did its best to plug the holes and stop corruption, and also listed a string of his accomplishments.

However Obonla said Jonathan’s assessment revealed the former leader is not a very honest man.

He said, “Only a very honest man will say his mother’s soup pot is not good and Jonathan is not a very honest man, with due respect to him. If he were honest, how can he say that food prices stayed low? It is not true. It is not true that the Nigerian economy was very sound.



“He ran a voodoo economy, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing. There was massive unemployment, massive inflation; there was shortage of petroleum products, there was oil subsidy which led to trillions of naira subsidy fraud.

“So, how can he say that the economy was sound, that it was well managed? The bumbling incompetence of his government is what has manifested in what we saw when we went into a recession shortly after we took over when we met an empty treasury.

“If he said his government didn’t block loopholes of corruption, that is an admission that his government was chronically scandalously corrupt and which is true, because we have not seen that kind of mindless looting of government resources and money which has manifested in his former minister looting what would amount to the budget of the entire northern states for about four years.

“He said the economy was sound when there were a lot of leakages through which billions of dollars were siphoned from the economy.”



Also remarking on Jonathan’s comments, the former Ekiti state Governor, and All Progressives Congress, deputy National Chairman, Engineer Segun oni advised Goodluck to keep quiet on matters relating to corruption.

He said, “It is very unfortunate that a former President will say that. There is the saying that there is no mark for effort. The only mark you get is for results.

“It does’t matter how much a man tried; if he does not have a result to show, what he should just do is to keep quiet and that is what I will advise him to do as far as corruption is concerned.

“The results are very shameful. I think he should just be asking for forgiveness.”[/s]
