Former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, has condemned the recent attack by suspected terrorists on a military base and an Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp in Ngoshe, in Gwoza Local Government Area, describing the incident as deeply troubling and a reflection of the worsening security situation in the country. In the statement on Friday, he noted that attack, which occurred in Ngoshe led to the "abduction of more than 100 residents, raising fresh concerns over the safety of civilians in communities affected by insurgency in Borno State and across the wider northeastern region." In a further reaction to the development, Abubakar expressed alarm over the scale of the incident and criticised what he described as the Federal Government’s response to the growing wave of violent attacks. “The attack by suspected terrorists on a military base and an Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp in Ngoshe, Gwoza Local Government Area of Borno State, in which over 100 citizens were abducted, is deeply troubling,” he said. The former vice president also voiced concern over what he characterised as a pattern of inadequate responses to recurring security breaches in several parts of the country. “Even more disturbing is the apparent indifference of the Federal Government to this incident and to many similar attacks before it,” he stated. According to him, the continued wave of killings and violent assaults across Nigeria has gradually created a sense of numbness among both government officials and the public. “The upsurge in violence and killings has become so widespread across the country that both government and society seem to have grown numb to the bloodshed resulting from these assaults,” Abubakar said. He further criticised the current administration, arguing that it appears to be struggling to maintain control of the security situation while allegedly focusing attention on political rivalries. “It is unfortunate that the current Federal Government appears to be losing its grip on the fight against terrorism and violent attacks. Instead, it seems more focused on unleashing intense pressure against political opponents and enabling self-serving ethnic militia groups,” he said. Abubakar also expressed disappointment over what he described as the priorities of those responsible for internal security and the leadership of the ruling party, accusing them of concentrating on political power while citizens continue to face deadly threats. “It is disheartening that those responsible for internal security, along with the elite of the ruling party, remain preoccupied with consolidating power, while vulnerable civilians and servicemen are being killed,” he added. While extending sympathy to the families affected by the incident, the former vice president emphasised the need for stronger empathy and decisive action from the government to address the escalating insecurity. “While I sympathise with the families of the victims of this Ngoshe attack, I must express strong indignation at the government’s evident lack of empathy towards the victims of these increasingly frequent assaults,” he said. The attack in Ngoshe has added to growing concerns about security challenges in Nigeria’s northeast, where communities continue to grapple with the activities of insurgent groups despite years of military operations aimed at restoring stability to the region. Earlier, SaharaReporters reported that a yet-to-be-ascertained number of persons, including soldiers, were killed by militants of the Islamic State-backed faction of Boko Haram, the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), formerly known as Jamā'at Ahl as-Sunnah lid-Da'wah wa'l-Jihād, in Borno state. Multiple security sources told SaharaReporters that Ngoshe town, under Gwoza Local Government Area of the state, came under highly coordinated and simultaneous attacks around 4am on Wednesday, and the terrorists operated till daybreak. During the incident, the militants invaded a military base, 82 Div TF Battalion under 26 BDE, and launched an assault on a camp for internally displaced persons (IDPs) in the community. A source added that the terrorists also ransacked the community, looking for soldiers they claimed may be hiding. The gunmen also burnt armoured tanks and military vehicles and made away with unquantifiable ammunition. https://saharareporters.com/2026/03/06/atiku-condemns-fresh-boko-haram-attacks-killings-says-tinubu-government-lost-fight |

The 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has said that while politicians obsess with the 2027 general election, over 1,000 Nigerians have been killed in 2026 alone. The former two-term governor of Anambra State made this known in a post on his X handle, saying thousands were also abducted. Obi tweeted: “It is profoundly disturbing that while we, the politicians, continue to obsess over the 2027 elections—spending our energy scheming about how to capture, grab, and run the next election—the first two months of 2026 have reportedly seen the killing of over 1,000 Nigerians and the abduction of several thousand others. “This is the painful reality confronting our nation. From Zamfara State to Kwara, Ondo, Kebbi, Edo, Benue, Adamawa, Plateau, and many other states, families have buried loved ones, and communities have been emptied by gunshots and fear. “In over 25 states across all geopolitical zones this year alone, there have been major violent attacks on innocent citizens, kidnappings by armed bandits, mass shootings, village invasions, and brazen assaults on worshippers and travellers. The scale of bloodshed and the number of deaths in just two months in Nigeria are even worse than what we see in countries officially at war. Yet the urgency with which we discuss these tragedies does not match the urgency of our discussions surrounding zoning formulas, party structures, and campaign strategies. “This is the tragedy of our politics. “We debate power sharing while citizens are sharing funeral programs. I watched in tears yesterday as families in the Doruwa Babuje community in Plateau State buried their dead after attacks by armed terrorists, but our media and leaders were focused on discussions about party issues and the 2027 elections, when we aren’t even sure we will be alive to see it, given all the deaths happening in our country today. We strategise about 2027 while Nigerians struggle to survive 2026. This is inhumane. “We must elevate human life to a sacred status in our national priorities. Leadership is not about winning elections; it is about saving lives. We can, and we must, aspire to a Nigeria devoid of bloodshed—a Nigeria where governance is measured not by political dominance but by the safety and dignity of its people. “History will not remember how many strategies we perfected for 2027; it will remember whether we acted when Nigerians were dying. We must choose Nigerian lives over politics. We must put Nigerians first. “A New Nigeria is POssible. – PO.” https://theeagleonline.com.ng/while-politicians-obsess-over-2027-over-1000-have-been-killed-in-2026-peter-obi/ |

Residents of Akpachi community in Otukpo Local Government Area of Benue State have raised grave security and humanitarian concerns over the presence of more than 100 allegedly armed Fulani herders. The residents alleged that the armed Fulani militia are currently laying siege to Akpachi, Otukpo, and Ugobia communities, reportedly positioning themselves in nearby bushes and setting up ambushes ahead of possible attacks sparking widespread fear among locals. SaharaReporters gathered that on January 10, the herders invaded farmlands belonging to Barrister Godwin Obla (SAN), burning and destroying crops spread across over 152 hectares of land. The affected farmlands reportedly included rice, cassava, plantain, and cashew plantations. The incident has sent shockwaves through the community, forcing many residents to abandon their farms and remain indoors for fear of being attacked. Confirming the incident, the traditional ruler of Akpachi, Chief Samuel Alachenu Udenyi, described the destruction as “barbaric and unacceptable,” issuing an ultimatum for the herders to vacate the community immediately. Speaking during an on-the-spot assessment of the damaged farmlands, Chief Udenyi disclosed that more than 152 hectares of farmland were affected by fire and grazing activities allegedly carried out by the herders. “We are aware that they have armed militia in the bush. We know they are there, but because of that, we will not run away from this community,” the chief said. “It is better to stay and defend our land than to be called cowards tomorrow.” According to him, preliminary reports showed that over 42 hectares of rice farmland were razed, including harvested rice still under chaff. In addition, 54 hectares of cassava farms were destroyed, while about two hectares each of cashew and banana plantations were also burnt. “So far, these are the damages recorded on just one farm. If you move around to other farms, you will not believe the scale of destruction,” he said. Chief Udenyi stressed that Akpachi community is not a designated grazing area and insisted that no land was allocated to the herders by the community. “Our land is not a grazing field. We did not give land to anyone to stay here, yet they are grazing freely on our farms,” he said. He further revealed that the security situation has worsened with the kidnapping of a community member from a farm, who remains missing. “Up till now, we have not seen the person, and no explanation has come from the herders’ leadership,” he added. The traditional ruler warned that the destruction of farmlands is already crippling food production and threatening livelihoods in the area. “Hunger is increasing day by day. Women cannot go to the farms to harvest their crops. Cassava and beans farms have been destroyed some by fire, others by cattle trampling and feeding on them,” he said. Addressing concerns about regional collaboration, Chief Udenyi confirmed that discussions are ongoing with neighboring traditional rulers facing similar challenges. “I have been in talks with another chief, and he shares the same view. We do not want them on our land,” he said. However, he expressed confusion over who granted the herders access to the disputed land, noting that both Akpachi and neighbouring Otukpo communities deny allocating land to them. “They are staying between our land and Otukpo. Otukpo says they did not give them land, and we did not. So we want to find out who did. Whoever gave them this land must be exposed,” he said. Chief Udenyi also alleged that security agencies are aware of the armed presence in nearby bushes, adding that mobile police officers have been deployed in the area. “They should know that we are aware they have people in the bush with guns. Whatever happens to us, we know where it is coming from,” he warned. He rejected compensation offers for the destroyed farmlands, insisting that evacuation not monetary settlement is the solution. “We don’t want compensation. Someone destroys a farm worth millions and offers ₦40,000 this is unacceptable,” he said. The chief lamented the deterioration in relations with herders over the years. “The Fulani we cohabited with years ago are different from the ones we have now. Farms were not destroyed then,” he said. He called on the herders to vacate Akpachi land immediately to allow peace to return to the community. https://saharareporters.com/2026/01/26/benue-community-raises-alarm-over-presence-armed-herdsmen-amid-destruction-farmlands |
United States – The Coalition for De-Amalgamation and Security (CODES), a broad alliance of indigenous civil forces and ethnic nationalities, has declared that Nigeria has become structurally unviable under its present political arrangement, insisting that peaceful self-determination offers the most realistic path to security, justice and lasting peace. The position was outlined in a communiqué released on Friday at the end of a world conference and international press briefing held via Zoom. During the briefing, the coalition accused the Nigerian state of a fundamental failure to protect lives and uphold justice amid escalating violence, displacement and humanitarian distress. According to CODES, Nigeria’s continued existence is sustained “not by truth, justice or the consent of the people, but by systemic denial and institutionalised falsehood,” a situation it says has fuelled insecurity and eroded public trust in the state. The communiqué was jointly signed by leading figures from the Oduduwa (Yorùbá) and Biafran (Igbo) self-determination movements. Signatories include Prof. Banji Akintoye, leader of the Oduduwa (Yoruba Nation Self-Determination Movement); Chief Sunday Adeyemo (Sunday Igboho), leader of the Yoruba National Community Defence; Architect George Akinola, deputy leader of the Yoruba Self-Determination Movement (Homeland); and Dr. Kayode Emola, deputy leader of the movement in the Diaspora. Also endorsing the statement were Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB); Mazi Tony Nwisi, chairman of the Igbo Global Network–IPOB; as well as Mazi Emmanuel Kanu, Mazi Ositadimma Igenu and Prof. Chinedu Agbodike, all acting under the umbrella of CODES. Addressing international media, the coalition described the alliance between the Oduduwa and Biafra nations as historic and driven by urgent security concerns, stressing that the collaboration is neither extremist nor violent. “Our partnership reflects not extremism, but deep frustration with deception and insecurity, and a lawful insistence on dignity, safety and political consent,” the coalition said. CODES noted that its De-Amalgamation Congress remains open to other indigenous nations across Nigeria, describing the initiative as a non-violent, lawful and internationally recognised exercise of the right to self-determination. The coalition accused successive Nigerian governments of concealing mass atrocities and misleading both citizens and the international community about the scale of violence across the country. It argued that this culture of denial has displaced accountability and stripped the state of moral legitimacy, creating a situation where “fear has replaced citizenship.” Tracing Nigeria’s instability to the 1914 colonial amalgamation and decades of post-independence centralisation, CODES maintained that the country was formed without the consent of its constituent peoples and has been sustained largely through coercion rather than agreement. “A state founded without consent cannot indefinitely survive against the will of its peoples,” the communiqué stated, adding that years of corruption, political exclusion and persistent insecurity have destroyed confidence in the federal arrangement. The statement highlighted recurring violence in the Middle Belt, the South-East and other regions, alleging state complicity, selective enforcement of the law or outright inaction in the face of attacks by armed groups. “Across vast areas of Nigeria, communities have been violently displaced from their ancestral lands, yet perpetrators are rarely prosecuted and victims are seldom resettled,” the coalition said, describing the situation as an existential security crisis marked by terrorism, mass displacement and selective justice. CODES also condemned what it described as the persecution of non-violent self-determination advocates, noting that while armed actors often operate with impunity, peaceful activists face aggressive state action. “While violent actors roam free, peaceful advocates such as Mazi Nnamdi Kanu and Chief Sunday Igboho are pursued with extraordinary state resources,” the coalition said, arguing that this selective application of the law has further damaged public confidence in the state. Invoking international law, CODES said its demands are grounded in global legal frameworks, including the United Nations Charter, the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights and the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights. The coalition warned that peaceful self-determination represents the only immediate, non-violent escape from a looming national catastrophe, cautioning that a full-scale conflict in Nigeria could trigger severe humanitarian and migration crises with global repercussions. Among its demands, CODES called for international recognition of the Biafra and Oduduwa nations, the immediate release of individuals detained solely for self-determination advocacy, and an end to the pursuit of Chief Sunday Igboho. I t also urged the establishment of United Nations-recognised referendum processes for indigenous nations seeking self-rule, international investigations into alleged mass killings and state complicity, and urgent protection for vulnerable and displaced communities. The coalition emphasised that the Biafra–Oduduwa alliance is not a call to violence. “This is not a declaration of war, but a declaration of truth, dignity and peaceful intent,” the communiqué stated. “Forced unity has failed. Silence has failed. Repression has failed. Peaceful self-determination remains the only path to lasting peace, stability and regional security.” https://koikimediainternationalnews.com/biafra-oduduwa-coalition-says-nigeria-no-longer-workable-urges-peaceful-de-amalgamation-to-end-insecurity/
