PoliticsRe: Ohanaeze Accuse Gowon Of Causing The Civil War by attackgat(op): 10:31am On Jun 20, 2025
SoftSport:
Gowon did what he thought was best to keep Nigeria together and in a time of big problems, making peace was not always easy.
If Gowon had wanted Nigeria to remain one, he would have kept to the Aburi agreement he signed with Ojukwu and prevent war

But because Gowon and his fellow Northerners wanted economic and political control of Nigeria, which the Aburi agreement prevented, they broke the agreement knowing fully well it would lead to secession and war, then fought war to keep Nigeria together

Gowon will tell you he fought for 'one Nigeria'. In reality, Gowon fought for 'one Nigeria under the North'
PoliticsOhanaeze Accuse Gowon Of Causing The Civil War by attackgat(op): 9:44am On Jun 20, 2025
The Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, reacting through the Deputy National Publicity Secretary, Ikechukwu Oji, insisted that Gowon was the one who reneged on the Aburi Peace Accord, adding that it was quite surprising that the former military head of state was attempting to rewrite history by giving a wrong account of events that happened during the time.

Oji in a telephone interview with our correspondent said the Aburi Peace Accord was signed and the specific terms and conditions were stated in a document that was available in the archive.

He blamed the war on Gowon, saying that the Aburi Accord was agreed to douse tension and stop the impending war, but the former head of state came back from Aburi and was wrongly advised by some international bodies and locals.
He said "We are quite surprised at the utterances of Gowon concerning the civil war. Gowon, who is meant to be an elder statesman appeared to be rewriting history and at his age, he should not be afraid of saying the truth.

“All the accounts stated that the Aburi Accord was agreed to douse tension and stop the impending war, that all the parties should go back to their regions and maintain the status quo ante. The agreement was signed and the specific terms and conditions are there in the document.

“Unfortunately, after Gowon got home from Ghana, he was wrongly advised by some international bodies and locals not to implement the agreement that had been signed.

“The Aburi Accord is still available in archives and other platforms. It is not an Igbo or Biafran document. It is a document that was signed in Ghana.”

Oji said assuming Gowon had said some of the things he did then that led to the civil war, he wouldn’t have done them if he was rightly counselled, just like Ojukwu said before he died.

“It would have been more honourable and statesmanlike on the part of Gowon not to come publicly and lie that Ojukwu caused the war. That was a blatant lie because that was not the case.

“Ojukwu never preempted Gowon in making any announcement nor renege on his side of the agreement, but Gowon actually went ahead to make pronouncements that were contradictory to the Aburi agreement and this was what led to the sharp disagreement,”
he said.

Oji advised Gowon to concentrate on how the insecurity and killings in Benue and Plateau states would be addressed, instead of dishing out falsehood.

“Instead of Gowon to advise on how the three R’s – Reconciliation, Reconstruction and Rehabilitation – which were part of the proposal after the civil war can be implemented and how the insecurity and killings in Benue and Plateau states can be addressed, he is busy dishing out falsehoods to defend his complicity in the civil war,” he said.

Another group, the Coalition of South-East Youth Leaders, called for historical clarity on the Nigerian civil war and the role of the Aburi Accord.
In an interview, the President General of the association, Goodluck Ibem, blamed Gowon for the war, insisting that the former head of state was not statesmanlike in his utterances which attributed the escalation of the war solely to Ojukwu.

He said Gowon should acknowledge the fundamental issues of non-compliance that arose from the March 1967 peace agreement reached in Aburi, Ghana.

Ibem said, “The Aburi Accord was a crucial step toward peace and understanding between the regions of Nigeria. The negotiations and agreements made during this time were intended to foster unity and address the growing tensions in the country.

“But the failure to implement these agreements consistently by the Gowon administration was a primary factor that led to the tragic outbreak of the Nigerian civil war in 1967.

“To clarify, had General Gowon honoured the commitments outlined in the Aburi Accord, the descent into civil conflict could have potentially been avoided.

“The agreement was recognised as a pathway to peace, and its repudiation only served to exacerbate the already fragile situation, ultimately resulting in widespread suffering and loss of life.”

He, however, called on Nigerians, particularly the leaders, to engage in a thoughtful and factual discourse regarding the past with a collective responsibility to educate the present and future generations on the complexities of history, particularly the circumstances that pushed the nation to the brink of war.

“As a coalition dedicated to promoting peace and unity in the South East and across Nigeria, we emphasise the importance of understanding our history to build a more inclusive and harmonious future.

“We call on Gen Gowon and other key figures from that era to engage in meaningful dialogue—one that prioritises truth, accountability, and mutual understanding.

“Together, let us work towards a nation where our differences are celebrated and our shared humanity is acknowledged,”
he said.

Peter Obi Blasts Tinubu and Governor Alia Over Benue Visit - Pictures

What has happened to our compassion as a People?
We pleaded that the President should show Leadership and visit Benue and Niger States in the spirit of deep national mourning, to offer compassion and solidarity to families torn apart by the senseless massacre of over 200 nnocent Nigerians in Benue State and flooding that killed similar number in Niger State.

But what we saw in Benue visit was instead of a solemn, reflective visit, a display that would have been more befitting for the commissioning of reconstructed Enugu-Makurdi highway, a critical road connecting South and Northern Nigeria which had become impassable for years.

The President arrived not in mourning cloth but in celebratory agbada attire, like it was an occasion for joy.
Even more heartbreaking is the role of the State. Rather than been in mourning mood and weeping declared a public holiday, not for reflection or prayer, but to organize fanfare. Schools were shut down. Children who should be mourning their slaughtered classmates, and parents were instead lined up under the rain, rehearsed to sing and dance for the President. In what kind of country does this happen?

We have tragically arrived at a point where condolence visits have become carnivals. A time that should be marked by silence and solemnity is now polluted by banners, music, and rehearsed spectacles. Precious Nigerian lives have been lost, yet we're clapping, singing, and organizing processions, as though this were campaign rally.

This is not how any compassionate nation behaves. The energy, resources, and logistics poured into this charade could have gone into food supplies, temporary shelters, medical aid, school support, and trauma counseling for grieving families. Instead, we chose optics over empathy.

Look elsewhere: When President Ramaphosa visited Mthatha after the floods in South Africa, there were no drums. No staged crowds. No rented cheers. Just presence, silence, and action. When Prime Minister Modi went to the site of a crash, no one lined up to welcome him. He came, he mourned, he acted. That is what leadership looks like in moments of pain.
We must ask ourselves: What kind of people have we become?

Enough of this culture of impunity. We are not at war yet our nation is bleeding, and we are clapping. It is r not only insensitive, it is dangerous.
Let us not forget: These were human beings, children, mothers, fathers whose blood cries out for justice.

When very sad incidents like this turns to campaign or festival, our Nation Losing Its Soul.

PoliticsMass Burial In Taraba As Herdsmen Slaughter Scores Of People by attackgat(op): 8:03pm On Jun 03, 2025
Tears flowed freely on Saturday as grieving residents of Munga Lalau and Munga Doso communities in Karim-Lamido Local Government Area of Taraba State buried scores of villagers killed by suspected herdsmen.

The communities were thrown into mourning after the assailants stormed the villages around 2am on Friday. Eyewitnesses said the attackers, numbering over 50, invaded the villages on motorcycles and opened fire indiscriminately on sleeping residents.

“We have counted 42 bodies so far, with many still missing,” a soldier who participated in the rescue operation told Sunday PUNCH.

The Chairman of the Munga Youth Forum, Suleiman Joel, confirmed that many people were killed.

He said, “We are still recovering the dead bodies, but I can tell you that the casualty figure is high. These are not isolated killings. It is a calculated extermination. People who returned to their homes based on security assurances have now been killed. What do we tell their families?”

Residents, who spoke to Sunday PUNCH, said the attackers, armed with AK-47 rifles and machetes, moved from house to house, burning homes and killing anyone in sight.

“We didn’t know where to run to,” said Soja Emmanuel, a survivor. “They came around 2am, shooting sporadically. People jumped out of their homes into the bush. Some didn’t make it.”

Families express anger at burial

During the burial on Saturday, some of the victims’ families were filled with sorrow as they recounted the way their relatives were killed.
A community leader, who lost two of his brothers in the attack, Augustine Munga, called for swift government intervention to end the bloodshed and bring the perpetrators to justice.

“The mass burial took place here in Munga Lalau and was conducted by soldiers and other security personnel,” Munga added. Another resident, who lost four relatives, suggested that the attackers were hired by herders to unleash mayhem on the communities.

“We all slept in the bush yesterday. The sound of gunshots that rent the air was beyond conventional herdsmen. We fled to the mountains and returned home this morning to see our houses razed,” he sobbed, struggling to utter words during a phone interview with one of our correspondents.

PoliticsSchools, Offices, Roads Deserted In South-east Over Biafra Remembrance Day by attackgat(op): 6:35pm On May 30, 2025
Economic and social activities across South-East Nigeria were brought to a standstill on Friday as residents observed the sit-at-home order declared by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) to commemorate this year’s Biafra Remembrance Day.

Major cities, including Enugu, the capital of Enugu State; Onitsha, the business hub of Anambra State; Awka, the capital of Anambra State; Aba and Umuahia in Abia State; Owerri, the capital of Imo State; and Abakaliki, the capital of Ebonyi State, experienced widespread shutdowns.

Markets, banks, schools, offices, and public transportation services remained closed, with streets largely deserted. Some residents said they opted to stay indoors out of solidarity and respect for those who died during the Nigerian Civil War, while some said they are indoors for fear of attacks and harm by possible enforcers of the order.

Biafra Remembrance Day, observed annually on May 30, is a solemn occasion for many in the South-East to honour the estimated one to three million people, mostly of Igbo descent, who lost their lives during the Nigerian Civil War (1967–1970).

The war followed the declaration of the Republic of Biafra by the late Lt. Col. Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu, a move that was opposed by Nigeria’s federal government under the regime of former head of state, General Yakubu Gowon, leading to a brutal three-year conflict marked by heavy casualties, starvation, and displacement.

IPOB, a separatist group founded in 2012 by Nnamdi Kanu, has consistently called for the secession of the South-East and parts of the South-South to form an independent state of Biafra.

The group declared May 30 a "sacred" day of remembrance and has, in recent years, enforced sit-at-home directives with varying degrees of compliance and disruption.

This year's compliance was near total in many areas, with residents locking up their businesses and avoiding travel, despite warnings and threats by police and other security agencies in the region against implementation of the order.

In Umuahia, the capital of Abia State, the streets were empty as residents stayed indoors in total compliance with the sit-at-home order.

The roads were deserted with no significant commercial and private vehicular movement except for occasional movements of tricycles and a few vehicles.

Also, shops on the streets, markets, motor parks, banks, and private and public schools were shut.

In Owerri, markets, schools and offices were shut as residents of the state stayed indoors in compliance with the sit-at-home order.

In Anambra, SaharaReporters observed compliance with the order in Onitsha, while Awka, the state capital, experienced partial compliance, with a few businesses opening. However, major markets like the Eke Awka market were partially closed, with no reasonable activities taking place.

Ever-busy areas like Temporary Site (Tem Site) where major transportation companies are located, as well as banks and other businesses, were reportedly near empty with a few movements.

“I can tell you there is 100% compliance in Onitsha here,” a resident told SaharaReporters on the phone.

“In fact, I have not gone out since morning. Everywhere is locked down. No business activities are going on.”

Some Awka residents told SaharaReporters on the phone that they had not gone since morning, saying that despite the warning by security agencies, the majority of the residents voluntarily chose to stay indoors in honour of those killed during the Civil War.

One Mr. Emmanuel said, “I have not gone out, not just because of the sit-at-home order but because it is necessary for us to honour our fallen heroes who paid the supreme price during the civil war.

“People voluntarily stay at home because it is the right thing to do on a day like this. It is just a matter of one day.”

Another resident who preferred to be identified as Obata said, “Even some of our people in the police force, army and the rest, they are also feeling what we are feeling. They are only obeying their commanders’ order, if not, they would also join us to observe the sit-at-home order.

“Forget what the police said. If things become messy, many of them will not stand. They are human beings too, and they also love their lives. Just that for now, we have not heard of any violence or attack anywhere in the state or in other states.”

In Enugu and Ebonyi states, SaharaReporters gathered that residents partially observed the sit-at-home order, with minimal movements. A few businesses opened with little or no customers.

“It is partially observed in Enugu here,” a resident told SaharaReporters on the phone.

“There are some movements within Enugu metropolis, but there is no movement on the highways. Unlike every other day, before we wake up, heavy-duty trucks from the North passing through Ebonyi State would fill the highways, but since morning, I have not seen any of them pass.”

The resident added that schools in the Enugu metropolis and rural communities were shut, noting that most times, once schools in the city are shut, those in rural communities automatically join in the shutdown.

Asked about markets, banks and offices, he said, “Well, you know those areas like Ogbete Market are major areas. The market is open, but how many people are there?”

The source noted that Ogbete Market is essentially open because the state government consistently shows special interest and attention to the market.

A resident of Abakaliki, Chimdi said, “In some major places like the International Market and motor parks, nothing is really happening. Those places are more or less empty. Just a few movements.

“Basically, the compliance is not total, but people are observing the sit-at-home order because nobody knows what would really happen if people fully come out.”

Generally, it was gathered that security agencies in most states increased patrols to prevent violence; however, no significant incidents have been reported as of press time.

In a statement released earlier in the week, IPOB described the sit-at-home as a peaceful way to commemorate fallen heroes and heroines who paid the ultimate price for the region's survival.

The group, however, warned of consequences for anyone attempting to sabotage the order.

This is despite the fact that government authorities had previously advised against complying with IPOB’s directive, warning that IPOB activities are illegal.

Civil society organisations and human rights groups have repeatedly called on the government to adopt more inclusive approaches to addressing the grievances of the South-East and to engage in dialogue rather than relying on force.

Friday’s total shutdown marks yet another chapter in the ongoing tension between separatist movements and the Nigerian state, as the memory of the Biafran conflict continues to shape political and cultural identities in the region.

REMEMBRANCE DAY 30 MAY 2025

Ahead of 30 May Remembrance Day, Amnesty International will be highlighting gross human rights violations by Nigerian security forces across
the south east geo-political zone. Since 2015, the organization has been documenting ruthless extrajudicial executions, enforced disappearances and other human rights violations in the region.

The Nigerian security forces, led by the military embarked on a chilling campaign of extrajudicial executions and violence resulting in the deaths of at least 150 peaceful pro-Biafra protesters in the south east of the country, according to our investigation released on 24 November 2016.

By far the largest number of pro-Biafra activists were killed on Biafra Remembrance Day on 30 May 2016 when an estimated 1,000 IPOB members and supporters gathered for a rally in Onitsha, Anambra State. The night before the rally, the security forces raided homes and a church where IPOB members were sleeping

On Remembrance Day itself, the security forces shot people in several locations. Amnesty International has not been able to verify the exact number of extrajudicial executions, but estimates that at least 60 people were killed and 70 injured

The right to PEACEFUL dissent must be respected at all times. The Nigerian security agencies must respect and uphold human rights ahead of and after Remembrance Day 30 May 2025

PoliticsBoko Haram Seizing Military Weapons Worth Trillions – Rep Gadgi by attackgat(op): 5:56pm On May 13, 2025
Honourable Yusuf Adamu Gadgi, a member of the House of Representatives, has claimed that Boko Haram insurgents have seized military assets worth trillions of Naira during attacks on military bases across Nigeria’s North-East region.

Gadgi made the statement while contributing to a motion moved by Honourable Ahmed Satomi from Borno State.

The motion addressed the recent fire outbreak at a military arms depot in Giwa Barracks, Maiduguri, and the increasing attacks by Boko Haram in Borno and Yobe states.

Gadgi claimed that the scale of destruction being inflicted by insurgents on military equipment is unprecedented.

He warned that failure to take swift and decisive action could have dire consequences.

He said: "I was shocked by what Boko Haram did at Giwa Barracks and other military facilities. There’s a serious threat to the security and safety of Nigerians, and even to the country itself."

Gadgi pointed out that the National Assembly had allocated significant funds for the purchase of over 40 combat vehicles and other weapons for the military, amounting to trillions of naira, to ensure the protection of citizens.

"How can we guarantee the safety of the people under such conditions, when insurgents can seize these weapons?" he asked.

"The National Assembly is doing its best to address security matters, but government agencies must also take responsibility. The President must launch an investigation into the conduct of top military commanders and other security agencies, and take appropriate action.

"We must also summon these agencies to explain why they are failing in their duties."

The lawmaker cautioned that continued negligence from the government and its security apparatus would erode public trust—posing a major threat to political leadership and national stability.

"If action is not taken quickly, Nigerians may be forced to defend themselves, and they could begin to see us, their leaders, as enemies—just like they see Boko Haram," he warned.

PoliticsAmnesty Condemns Killing Of Zamfara Chief Imam After Ransom Was Paid by attackgat(op): 11:08am On May 03, 2025
The global human rights body, Amnesty International, says President Bola Tinubu has failed to tackle the insecurity he promised to address after the abduction and killing of the Chief Imam of Maru Jumma’a Mosque, Alkali Salihu Suleiman, and his three children by armed bandits in Zamfara State.

The family was abducted in March during the Ramadan period, and despite the bandits receiving N11 million of the N20 million ransom they demanded, they were subjected to torture and eventually murdered.

Amnesty International, in a statement on Thursday, condemned the killings, pointing to the Nigerian government’s failure to protect its citizens and the lack of accountability for the perpetrators of such violence.

“Amnesty International strongly condemns the gruesome killing of the Chief Imam of Maru Jumma’a Mosque, Alkali Salihu Suleiman 79, along with his three children — after the bandits received N11m of the N20m ransom they demanded,” the organisation said in a statement.

“The Chief Imam and his three children were abducted by gunmen in during Ramadan fasting in March. While in custody of the bandits they were subjected to almost daily rounds of torture and other ill-treatement. Apart from beatings, they were also made to go long hours without food or water,” the statement added.

Amnesty also criticised the Nigerian authorities for their inability to protect lives and property while armed groups continue their atrocities, which include abductions, killings, and sexual violence.

The Nigerian authorities consistently failed to protect lives and property, while the killers continue to carry out horrific atrocities that include slaughtering people, abduction, amputation, rape of women and girls and razing of entire villages,” Amnesty said.

The rights group highlighted the ongoing nature of attacks on rural communities in northern Nigeria, accusing security forces of failing to respond effectively.

"Terrifying attacks on rural communities in the north of Nigeria have been going on for years. The current failure of security forces to take sufficient steps to protect villagers from these predictable attacks is utterly shameful and unacceptable,” Amnesty added.

Amnesty also stated that the continuing violence across states such as Zamfara shows that the government has failed to take decisive action against armed groups.

"Almost daily attacks across Zamfara and other states clearly show that President Bola Tinubu and his government have no effective plan for ending years of atrocities by armed groups and gunmen that are increasingly having free reigns of impunity across many parts of Nigeria,” the organisation concluded.

“President Bola Tinubu promised to tackle insecurity nationwide, but so far, security of lives seems to be low on the list of his government’s priorities.”

In a statement signed by IPOB’s Media and Publicity Secretary, Emma Powerful, and released on April 25, 2025, the group declared that even Canada which denied Musa visa recently, recognised the IPOB family.

IPOB said, "The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), under the resolute leadership of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, unequivocally condemns the brazen and provocative statements by Christopher Musa, Nigeria’s Chief of Defence Staff, who has once again resorted to threatening and intimidating Biafrans for exercising their inalienable rights to free speech and self-determination through social media.

"Musa’s reckless call for Southeasterners to cease propagating IPOB’s activities is not only an affront to our fundamental freedoms but a desperate attempt to silence the awakening of Biafran consciousness. We will not be cowed, and we will not be silenced."

The statement went further to criticise the Nigerian Army’s human rights record.

"Musa’s Nigerian Army, an institution soaked in the blood of innocent Igbo youths, has no moral standing to lecture Biafrans on what is good for us. This is the same army that has orchestrated relentless massacres of our people since 1966, from the pogroms that claimed over 5 million Igbo lives to the ongoing genocidal campaigns in Biafraland."

IPOB referenced several incidents, including the 2016 Nkpor and Aba killings, and the invasion of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu’s residence during Operation Python Dance, stating:

"We ask Musa: What was the crime of the Biafran youths slaughtered at Nkpor in 2016, a massacre acknowledged by Amnesty International and UN Special Rapporteurs as constituting crimes against humanity? What was the offence of the Igbo youths mowed down at National High School, Aba, or those killed during the Trump solidarity rally in Port Harcourt? What justified the murderous invasion of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu’s residence during Operation Python Dance, where 28 innocent Biafrans, including Kanu’s parents, were killed in cold blood by your forces, orchestrated by your Fulani overlords?"

The statement also criticised traditional rulers in the Southeast who hosted General Musa.

"Musa, your audacity to spew gibberish on Biafran soil is enabled only by the cowardice of lily-livered traditional rulers who grant you audience to desecrate our land with your presence. Such traditional rulers are unfit to lead and must face the consequences of their betrayal. We hold them in contempt for entertaining an agent of oppression whose hands drip with the blood of our people."

IPOB which further defended its social media activism, added, "Let us remind Musa of the undeniable truth: It was IPOB’s social media activism that halted the Fulani RUGA settlement scheme in your own Kaduna village, preserving your people’s right to their ancestral lands. It was IPOB, under Nnamdi Kanu’s leadership, that stopped the Waterways Bill designed to enslave indigenous populations to Fulani hegemony. Instead of gratitude for IPOB’s tireless efforts to protect indigenous peoples across Nigeria from supporter of APC domination, you parade your ignorance, vilifying the very movement that safeguarded your community from perpetual bondage. Shame on you, Musa, for your blindness and ingratitude."

The group dismissed the label of being an unlawful organisation, "Your reference to IPOB as 'unlawful' is laughable. No nation in the world, except your Fulani-controlled Nigeria, has proscribed IPOB. Even Canada, which rejected your visa application, hosts one of the largest and most vibrant IPOB families globally. Your Fulani masters proscribed IPOB not because we are a threat to peace but because we stand as an unyielding bulwark against their agenda to subjugate Biafrans and other indigenous peoples. You are too myopic to see that IPOB’s activism protects even the likes of you from the very forces you serve."

IPOB called for increased activism among its members. It said, "We call on all Biafrans to intensify our social media campaign to enlighten our people that Biafran freedom is not just a dream but the ultimate goal of every Southeasterner. Let Musa and his ilk know that IPOB remains undeterred, unbroken, and uncompromising in our pursuit of self-determination. The Nigerian Army’s history of atrocities—from the 1966 pogroms to Operation Python Dance—only strengthens our resolve to break free from this oppressive entity."

Finally, IPOB issued a warning to traditional rulers and the Nigerian Army, "To the traditional rulers who entertain agents of genocide like Musa, we say: Your time is up. The Biafran people will hold you accountable for betraying our collective struggle. To Musa and the Nigerian Army, we declare: Your intimidation will not bend us. Your massacres will not break us. Biafra will rise, and no force on earth can stop it."

PoliticsI Have No Plans To Join APC - Governor Otti by attackgat(op): 9:48pm On Apr 26, 2025
Alex Otti, the governor of Abia state, has denied claims linking him to a planned defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Reports had alleged that Otti recently met with Hope Uzodimma, the Imo governor, to discuss a potential move to the ruling party. The claims surfaced after Thursday’s national economic council (NEC) meeting at the presidential villa.

In a statement on Saturday, Ferdinand Ekeoma, special adviser to Otti on media and publicity, described the reports as “false, baseless and unfounded”. The governor’s spokesperson said the alleged meeting was misrepresented and had no political undertone.

After the National Economic Council meeting on Thursday, April 24, Governor Otti and a few of his colleagues joined Governor Uzodinma to attend the birthday celebration of his twin daughters, an event that had nothing to do with politics,” he said.

Ekeoma said Otti’s “rising profile and performance” as Abia governor may be fuelling speculation and political projections from various quarters. He said decisions with long-term consequences would only be taken in consultation with the people of Abia and the governor’s close allies.

According to him, Otti remains focused on governance and believes it is premature to allow 2027 politics to “distract from the mandate of service to Abians”.

“We wish to emphatically state that Governor Otti remains a member of the Labour Party and is presently not planning or discussing with anyone to defect to the APC or any other party,” he added.

In recent weeks, major opposition parties have lost several members to the ruling APC, with more governors and key party members reportedly planning to defect.

PoliticsArmed Herdsmen Attack Another Enugu Community, Brutally Murder Four Farmers by attackgat(op): 5:58am On Apr 15, 2025
No fewer than four farmers were murdered on their farms in Adani community in the Uzo-Uwani local government area of Enugu by suspected Fulani herdsmen. SaharaReporters gathered on Thursday that the victims were slaughtered in their farms on Tuesday afternoon, when the assailants invaded their farms.

Meanwhile, Adani-Ogurugu road in the same local government has been under siege by gunmen suspected to kidnappers. Several travellers and local residents had been reportedly kidnapped in the last three weeks.

A resident of Adani community, Chijindu Omeje, who confirmed the incident told SaharaReporters that his cousin's in-law named Emenike who was in his early 40s was among the four people killed by Fulani herdsmen. Another victim was a tree feller.

"This incident happened in Adani farm. Meanwhile, the road from Adani to Ogurugu is a no-go area now as kidnappers believed to be same Fulani herdsmen have taken over the road. Several people have been kidnapped along the road in recent weeks.

"The chairman of the local government is helpless. We need help. We need government intervention to ensure that local farmers can return to their farms. It is no longer a funny situation, something must be done and done urgently."

Meanwhile, the Council Chairman, Barr Chijioke Ezeugwu assured local farmers of protection, adding that he directed security operatives to safeguard farmlands to enable farmers to return to their farms.

In a report shared on Facebook by one Sen Chijinkem Ugwuanyi, a resident of the local government, he quoted Ezeugwu to have spoken on April 08, 2025, during a security awareness visit to communities in Uzo-uwani Local Government Area with the Chief Security Officer (CSO) of Enugu Government House.

Addressing the gathering in the various communities, the Chairman noted that he had directed security operatives to take charge of all the surrounding bushes and farms so that farmers could safely cultivate in their lands and also said they'll ruthlessly deal with some of the miscreants harbouring around its environs.

"Farming is very important to all of us, food security is the worst form of insecurity. Therefore, we will not allow food insecurity to surface in this part where we have started to witness a substantial return of peace and stability," he quoted the Council Chairman to have said.

Ezeugwu reassured the farmers of the government's commitment to improving security around farmlands by using local security operatives to protect farmers from the unwarranted attacks.

He called on all citizens to be resilient and conscious of the happenings around them and to report any suspicious activity or movement to security operatives.

He implored and equally urged all Communities to fully support and cooperate with members of the Nigerian Police, Military, the neighbourhood watch and other security agencies.

The Chairman noted that security operatives had started bush combing and government had taken a decisive step in bringing the menace to a stop.

When the State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Daniel Ndukwe, was contacted, he denied the attack.

In text message sent to some journalists, Ndukwe said: "There is no report of such an incident please."
