PoliticsAlex Barbir At A Mass Burial In Plateau State, Nigeria (Pictures) by attackgat(op): 1:54pm On Jan 23
How many mass burials need to be had? How many caskets should be lowered into their graves? How many families need to weep at the hands of pure evil? It is past due time that action is taken. God Bless and God help Nigeria.
https://www.facebook.com/share/v/14TLPu82n8z/

American humanitarian and activist Alex Barbir was among those who attended the somber burial ceremony in Jos on January 22, 2026, for six young miners brutally killed in a terrorist attack at a mining camp in Kuru District, Jos South Local Government Area of Plateau State.

The victims, described in reports as youths working at the site, were reportedly attacked overnight by suspected Fulani terrorists, in what has become a recurring pattern of violence targeting communities in Nigeria’s Middle Belt.

The mass burial, conducted by Rev. Ezekiel Dachomo, drew family members, community residents, sympathizers, and Barbir, who has been actively supporting victims of such attacks across Plateau and neighboring states.

During the event and in related statements, Barbir invoked Psalm 82:3-4: “Give justice to the weak and the fatherless; maintain the right of the afflicted and the destitute. Rescue the weak and the needy; deliver them from the hand of the wicked.”

He emphasized the urgent need for action against what he described as the ruthless slaughter of Christians across Nigeria.

“The truth is, Christians, our very brothers and sisters, are being slaughtered ruthlessly across Nigeria,” Barbir stated.

“There is no justice. No one is held accountable. Massacres are not prevented. The oppressed and suffering are not lifted up. Villages that have been burnt to the ground remain in rubble. The world has been largely silent and inactive. But when will their cries be heard? When will their voices be amplified instead of silenced?”

Barbir, who has spent significant time in Nigeria documenting attacks, rebuilding homes, constructing churches and clinics, and providing aid in affected areas like Yelewata in Benue State, lamented the prolonged prevalence of evil.

“It’s been too long. Evil has been prevailing. It’s time that the church steps up to the plate and fights. It’s time the church stands up for the oppressed, rescues the needy, and delivers those who are afflicted.”

The incident in Kuru adds to a long list of violent attacks on mining communities and Christian-majority areas in Plateau State, where insecurity linked to herder-farmer clashes, banditry, and terrorism has claimed numerous lives in recent years.

Barbir’s presence at the burial highlights growing international attention to these crises, as he continues to gather evidence and advocate for the vulnerable.

His impassioned plea underscores calls for greater accountability, prevention of future massacres, and active intervention to protect affected populations, urging both local and global Christian communities to respond decisively to the suffering in Nigeria’s conflict zones.

PoliticsIPOB Holds ‘trump Solidarity’ Rallies In Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi- Pictures And Vid by attackgat(op): 9:19pm On Jan 20

The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) on Tuesday held “Trump Solidarity Rallies” across parts of the South-East, with demonstrators renewing calls for the immediate and unconditional release of its detained leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.

In a press release issued by its Media and Publicity Directorate, IPOB stated that the rallies and peaceful marches took place simultaneously in Abia, Anambra and Ebonyi states, drawing participation from youths, women and elders.

According to the group, the rallies were organised both in solidarity and in remembrance of ‘Biafrans’ (southeasterners) who were killed nine years ago during protests held on the day of former United States President Donald Trump’s first inauguration.

“Youths, women, and elders came out in large numbers to peacefully demonstrate in solidarity and in remembrance of our people who were brutally killed exactly nine years ago during the first inauguration of President Donald Trump,” the statement said. IPOB alleged that the killings occurred when Nigerian soldiers opened fire on unarmed demonstrators.

“Nigerian soldiers, acting under the directives of the then ruling APC-led government, opened fire on unarmed Biafran demonstrators,” the group said.

Despite what it described as persistent insecurity and repression in the region, IPOB said ‘Biafrans’ remained undeterred.

“Despite the ongoing and relentless pogrom in Biafraland, and the atmosphere of intimidation, persecution and insecurity deliberately imposed on the South-East, Biafrans continue to defy fear and oppression,” the statement read. “A people determined to be free cannot be permanently subdued.”

The group said protesters carried placards, banners and photographs of Nnamdi Kanu, whom they described as central to the current tensions in the region.

“Participants renewed their demand for his immediate and unconditional release, insisting that his continued detention remains a major catalyst for tension and instability,” IPOB stated.

The rallying crowd also reportedly called for broader accountability over past and present security issues in the South-East.

“The rallying crowd called for an independent inquiry into the Port Harcourt killings and the wider, worsening insecurity ravaging the South-East,” the statement said, adding that “truth, accountability and justice are indispensable to peace.”

IPOB maintained that its activities are non-violent and lawful, while appealing to security agencies and the international community.

“IPOB reiterates that all our activities remain peaceful and lawful,” the group said.

“We urge the security agencies to respect the fundamental rights of citizens to peaceful assembly.”

The organisation also called on foreign governments and human rights bodies to intervene.

“We call on the international community to take urgent interest in the deteriorating human rights situation in the South-East of Nigeria,” the statement added.

PoliticsAmnesty Lambasts FG For Failing To Probe Killing Of 150 Biafra Protesters by attackgat(op): 10:12am On Jan 20
The Nigerian government and its security agencies have refused to investigate a deadly campaign of extrajudicial executions and violence carried out against pro-Biafra campaigners in the South-East, despite overwhelming evidence that at least 150 peaceful protesters were killed, the Amnesty International Nigeria has said.

In a statement issued on Monday via its official X handle, the human rights organisation accused Nigerian security forces, led by the military, of orchestrating what it described as a “chilling campaign” of unlawful killings between August 2015 and August 2016 under late president Muhammadu Buhari's administration.

“Between August 2015 to August 2016, the Nigerian security forces, led by the military, embarked on a chilling campaign of extrajudicial executions and violence,” Amnesty International Nigeria said.

“This resulted in the deaths of at least 150 peaceful pro-Biafra protesters in the south east of the country.”

Amnesty said that nearly a decade after the killings, victims and survivors have been abandoned by the state, with no credible investigations initiated and no perpetrators held accountable.

“Despite overwhelming evidence that the Nigerian security forces committed gross human rights violations including extrajudicial executions and torture, no investigations have been carried out by the authorities,” the organisation stated.

“The victims and survivors must get justice.”

The group said its findings were based on extensive research, including eyewitness testimonies, medical reports and video evidence, all of which point to the use of excessive and lethal force against unarmed demonstrators.

“Peaceful protesters were shot at close range, arbitrarily arrested, tortured and in many cases killed,” Amnesty said.

“The scale of these violations and the complete absence of accountability are deeply alarming.”

Amnesty International Nigeria warned that the government’s continued silence and inaction have entrenched a culture of impunity within the country’s security agencies.

“By refusing to investigate these grave crimes, the Nigerian authorities are sending a dangerous signal that security forces can kill with impunity,” the organisation said. “This denial of justice only fuels further human rights violations.”

The organisation called on President Bola Tinubu’s administration to immediately order independent, impartial and transparent investigations into the killings and to ensure that all those responsible, regardless of rank, are prosecuted in line with international standards.

“The Nigerian government must demonstrate its commitment to the rule of law,” Amnesty said.

“Families of those killed deserve truth, justice and reparations, not years of silence.”

The pro-Biafra movement, which advocates the secession of Nigeria’s South-East region, has remained a sensitive security issue. Rights groups have consistently raised concerns over the heavy-handed response of security forces to demonstrations linked to the movement, particularly those involving the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

As of the time of filing this report, there was no official response from the Nigerian government or security agencies to Amnesty International Nigeria’s statement.

PoliticsRULAAC Demands Probe After DSS Confirmed Death Of Enugu Woman In Custody by attackgat(op): 3:57pm On Jan 14
The Rule of Law and Accountability Advocacy Centre (RULAAC) has demanded accountability and justice following the confirmed death of Mrs. Calista Ifedi, who died while in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS) at Wawa Barracks, Abuja.

In a statement issued in Lagos on Wednesday, RULAAC said the DSS’s admission that Mrs. Ifedi died in its custody amounted to confirmation of “a grave abuse of power, a flagrant violation of the Constitution, and a tragic failure of the Nigerian state to protect the right to life.”

Mrs. Ifedi was arrested alongside her husband, Mr. Sunday Ifedi, at their home in Enugu on 23 November 2021.

According to RULAAC, her alleged offence was that members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) had reportedly bought food from her restaurant.

“For this, she was violently taken away, detained indefinitely without charge, denied access to court, and disappeared into DSS custody,” the organisation said.

RULAAC noted that sustained advocacy by civil society groups, including Amnesty International Nigeria, later established the circumstances surrounding her arrest and prolonged detention.

Mr. Ifedi, who was released from detention in December 2025, reportedly told rights groups that the last time he saw his wife was in March 2022, when both were transferred from DSS headquarters to Wawa Barracks.

“They were separated at Wawa Barracks and never allowed to see each other again,” RULAAC stated, adding that Mr. Ifedi was never informed of his wife’s death.

According to the group, Mrs. Ifedi became seriously ill while in detention and repeatedly complained of severe chest pains.

“Rather than receive proper medical attention, her complaints were dismissed, mocked, and trivialised, with occasional administration of ulcer medication,” RULAAC said. “She was left to deteriorate until she died.”

The organisation also accused the DSS of deception, alleging that even when civil society organisations demanded her release, the agency denied that she was holding her in custody.

RULAAC described the circumstances of her death as amounting to “unlawful detention, enforced disappearance, torture through medical neglect, and extrajudicial killing,” all of which it said are prohibited under Nigerian and international law.

Of particular concern, according to the group, is an allegation that the DSS issued non-disclosure threats to Mr. Ifedi after his release.

“The DSS has allegedly warned him not to speak publicly about his detention or the circumstances surrounding his wife’s death,” RULAAC said, describing the move as “a further abuse of power and obstruction of justice.”

Reacting to the case, RULAAC Executive Director Okechukwu Nwanguma said Mrs. Ifedi was “an innocent civilian—an ordinary food vendor—whose life was unlawfully taken by an agency mandated to protect national security, not destroy lives.”

He added: “Accountability for her death is not optional—it is a legal and moral obligation.”

RULAAC called for the immediate public disclosure of the circumstances surrounding Mrs. Ifedi’s detention and death, the production of her remains for an independent autopsy, and an impartial investigation into the DSS, including those in the chain of command.

The group also demanded the closure of Wawa Barracks as a detention facility and protection for the Ifedi family from intimidation or reprisals.

“Justice delayed must not become justice denied,” Nwanguma said, pledging the organisation’s solidarity with the family and other victims of secret detention and state brutality in Nigeria

PoliticsKatsina State Government Releases 70 Bandits by attackgat(op): 12:33pm On Jan 13
The Katsina State Government has defended the release of 70 suspected bandits from custody, saying the decision was part of a broader peace initiative and hostage-swap agreement designed to restore stability in conflict-affected communities.

The State Commissioner for Information, Salisu Bala, said the move followed appeals from traditional rulers and community leaders who were directly involved in negotiating a peace accord with repentant bandit groups operating in frontline local government areas.

An earlier official letter indicating that courts had been directed to approve the release of the detainees sparked widespread public criticism, with many Nigerians questioning why suspects accused of grave offences, including killings, rape and destruction of property, were being freed.

However, the Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Nasir Muazu, had previously clarified that the releases were tied to conditions agreed under the peace deal, including the exchange of captives held by the bandits.

Bala disclosed that, in line with the agreement, more than 1,000 hostages were released from several local government areas, including Safana, Kurfi, Faskari, Sabuwa, Danmusa, Malumfashi, Musawa, Matazu, Jibia, Bakori and Dutsinma.

He explained that following the release of the hostages, traditional rulers and community representatives formally approached the state government to facilitate the release of detained bandits to fulfil the communities’ obligations under the accord.

The government, he said, reviewed legal and judicial processes before approving the request.

According to Bala, the peace initiative has already yielded tangible improvements in security and economic activity across affected areas.

Farming has resumed, markets in Danmusa and Batsari have reopened, and displaced residents are returning to their communities to harvest crops.

He urged the public to support the peace process and avoid politicising the matter, noting that similar exchange arrangements are common in conflict resolution efforts.

He argued that no one would oppose a deal capable of securing the release of loved ones held in captivity.

Bala reaffirmed that the administration of Governor Dikko Umaru Radda remains committed to ending banditry and kidnapping in Katsina State through lawful, community-driven strategies aimed at achieving lasting peace.

PoliticsNigerian Jewish Leader Visits Nnamdi Kanu In Sokoto Prison by attackgat(op): 9:15pm On Jan 10
A cleric, Kohen Daniel Onuoha, who is spiritual leader of the Peace of Yahweh Synagogue and founder of Eastern Judaism, has paid a solidarity visit to detained Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, at the Sokoto Correctional Facility.

The visit, which took place on January 10, 2026, was described by Onuoha as a gesture of spiritual and moral support from Jewish communities in Nigeria’s former Eastern Region, also known as Biafraland.

Onuoha was accompanied by his wife and associates, whom he said represented Jewish congregations that “faithfully observe the Ten Commandments.”

He said the visit underscored years of sustained prayers and sacrifices for Kanu’s freedom.

“For over five years, we have remained steadfast in daily sacrifices and prayers to Elohim without interruption,” Onuoha said in a statement made available to SaharaReporters, adding that the prison visit further demonstrated his commitment to what he described as the pursuit of justice and freedom.

During the visit, Onuoha reaffirmed his belief in divine intervention for Kanu’s release and urged the international community to scrutinise the legal basis of his continued detention.

“I call on the global community, legal experts and human rights organisations to critically examine the legality of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu’s continued detention and conviction,” he said, arguing that the case was “based on a repealed law and questionable legal grounds.”

The Jewish leader rejected the designation of Kanu and IPOB as terrorists, insisting that the detained separatist leader had not committed any violent acts.

“Mazi Nnamdi Kanu is not a terrorist, and IPOB is not a terrorist organisation,” Onuoha declared. “We all know who the real terrorists are, and the world knows too.”

According to him, Kanu’s prosecution stemmed from what he described as the peaceful exercise of the right to self-determination and his public criticism of alleged atrocities involving political leaders, foreign interests and local elites.

He further argued that speech alone could not justify criminal conviction.

“Verbal expressions or broadcasts, without credible evidence of violent acts, cannot lawfully justify the conviction or continued incarceration of an innocent man,” Onuoha said, calling for Kanu’s “immediate and unconditional release in the interest of justice and the rule of law.”

Onuoha also used the occasion to commend United States President Donald Trump for what he described as efforts by his administration to protect Christians in Nigeria.

He appealed for broader international intervention to address the plight of Biafrans.

“Beyond Christian communities, Biafrans seeking their legitimate right to freedom continue to face marginalisation, oppression and violence,” he said, urging President Trump to intensify international action against what he termed ongoing injustices.

In his closing remarks, Onuoha appealed for calm and perseverance among Kanu’s supporters.

“I call on all Biafrans, freedom advocates, Jews and human rights defenders to remain steadfast, resilient and peaceful,” he said. “The release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu is imperative, and justice, in due time, must prevail.”

PoliticsBandits Impose Fifty Thousand Naira Levy On Farmers In Kano And Katsina by attackgat(op): 1:19pm On Jan 10
Armed groups operating in parts of Kano and Katsina states are allegedly extorting farmers, demanding up to ₦50,000 per acre from sugarcane growers before harvest, as they enforce a parallel system of governance within key forest reserves in the region.

According to reports on Friday, the armed groups have entrenched themselves in Rugu Forest in Faskari Local Government Area of Katsina State and Falgore Forest in Doguwa Local Government Area of Kano State, where they collect illegal farm taxes and issue threats against non-compliant farmers.

The report noted that farmers who refuse to pay the imposed levies face intimidation, destruction of their crops, and the risk of violent attacks, forcing many to abandon their farmlands entirely.

Sugarcane farmers are said to be the primary targets, though maize production has also been affected.

The forests according to an activist Bakatsine with X handle @DanKatsina50, are strategically located within the Kano–Katsina food belt, a major agricultural corridor supplying sugarcane and maize to large markets such as Dawanau Market in Kano.

Experts warn that continued disruption of farming activities in the area could trigger wider food shortages and price increases across northern Nigeria.

Despite the presence of military and police checkpoints along the Falgore road, the report claims that armed groups are operating within five kilometres of these security positions.

This has raised concerns about the effectiveness of security coverage and the capacity of authorities to protect rural communities.

Residents and farming communities reportedly describe the situation as a gradual takeover, with armed actors enforcing rules, collecting levies, and exercising control over daily economic activities without resistance.

The development has intensified calls for urgent action by Kano and Katsina state governments and federal security agencies to dismantle the alleged parallel structures and prevent a looming food-security crisis.

As of press time, no official response had been issued by the affected state governments or security agencies.

PoliticsBandits Kill 42 In Niger State, Kidnap Missionary School Students by attackgat(op): 2:51pm On Jan 04
No fewer than 42 people, including women and children, were killed by the terrorists in the latest attack, which saw blood flowing freely and has thrown the entire communities into mourning.

A source close to Kasuwa Daji and Kaima communities, where the attack took place on Saturday, said an unspecified number of villagers were whisked away into Kainji National Park, including some students of Papiri missionary school who had recently regained their freedom.

The attack came barely five days after a group of fleeing bandits from a military operation in Kwara State invaded Gebe and Goro communities, in the same Agwara Local Government Area, slaughtered two people, and burnt down over 15 houses after looting valuables.

Also, a week ago, a Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps checkpoint within the axis, this time in Wawa community, Borgu Local Government Area, was invaded by the gunmen, who carted away arms and ammunition as the personnel fled for safety.

The terrorists, according to a reliable source, have occupied Kainji National Park, from where they launch constant attacks on communities within the axis.

According to the source, “They killed 37 people in Kasuwa Daji near Papiri, another five people in Kaima village and abducted many people, including children and some of the students who had earlier been released.

“The government and security agencies should come to our rescue. We have a serious crisis across the River Rofia, from where they cross over from Kebbi State to launch attacks.

“They came out of the forest about a week ago, wreaking havoc in the villages. Just yesterday (Saturday) alone, they burnt one particular market and abducted so many people, including children,” our source said.

The Director of Communications, Catholic Church of Kontagora Diocese, Rev Father Stephen Kabirat, who confirmed the incident, disclosed that the terrorists had killed over 40 people and taken an unspecified number of people into captivity.

“Our parish priest narrowly escaped abduction when the terrorists visited our mission house three days ago. They destroyed some religious items in the church, carted away two motorbikes and cash worth over two hundred thousand naira (N200,000).

“They were looking for the priest, but luckily, he escaped, but they abducted some villagers, including children.”

Another villager, while appealing to the relevant authorities, said, “As I am talking to you, some of the villages where the abducted schoolchildren come from have been sleeping in the bushes since their return because of the activities of the terrorists.”

Confirming the attacks, the Public Relations Officer of the Niger State Police Command, SP Wasiu Abiodun, said that at about 9:00 p.m. on Saturday, the police received reports that suspected bandits attacked and killed over 30 persons and abducted an unconfirmed number of people.

In a statement, Wasiu said, “At about 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, suspected bandits from the National Park forest along Kebe District invaded Kasuwan Daji located at Demo Village via Kebe village and killed over 30 persons, burnt the market and looted shops and carted away food items.

“A joint security team has visited the scene, and efforts are ongoing to rescue the victims. Further development will be communicated, please.”

Foreign AffairsVice President Delcy Rodriguez Sworn In As 'Acting President' Of Venezuela by attackgat(op): 2:21pm On Jan 04
A Caracas native, Rodriguez was born on May 18, 1969. She is the daughter of left-wing rebel fighter Jorge Antonio Rodriguez, who founded the Socialist League party in the 1970s. Her father was killed while tortured in police custody in 1976, a crime that shook many activists of the era, including a young Maduro.

Rodriguez’s brother, also named Jorge, also holds a key role in government as the head of the National Assembly.

She is an attorney who graduated from the Central University of Venezuela and rose rapidly through the political ranks in the past decade. Rodriguez has a long history of representing on the world stage what late President Hugo Chavez called his socialist “revolution” with those carrying on his legacy referred to as Chavistas.

She served as communication and information minister from 2013 to 2014, foreign minister from 2014 to 2017 and as the head of a pro-government Constituent Assembly, which expanded Maduro’s powers, in 2017.

Despite being perceived as more moderate, Maduro has called Rodriguez a “tiger” for her die-hard defence of his socialist government.

When she was named vice president in June 2018, Maduro described her as “a young woman, brave, seasoned, daughter of a martyr, revolutionary and tested in a thousand battles”.

After Maduro’s abduction on Saturday, Rodriguez demanded the US government provide proof of life for Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, and minced no words in denouncing the US actions.

“We call on the peoples of the great homeland to remain united because what was done to Venezuela can be done to anyone. That brutal use of force to bend the will of the people can be carried out against any country,” she said in an address broadcast by the state television channel VTV.

PoliticsAdeyanju Condemns Nigerians Who Praised Kanu’s Rendition But Condemn Maduro's by attackgat(op): 12:14pm On Jan 04
Nigerian human rights activist and lawyer, Deji Adeyanju, has condemned what he described as the hypocrisy of some Nigerians who are now denouncing the alleged extraordinary rendition of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro by the United States, despite previously praising similar unlawful actions carried out by Nigerian authorities.

Adeyanju, in a statement, said the reported invasion of Venezuela and the extraordinary rendition or abduction of Maduro as ordered by U.S. President Donald Trump amounts to a clear violation of international law and the principle of national sovereignty, regardless of the justification offered by the American government.

According to him, while Maduro is widely regarded as a brutal and illegitimate dictator who has presided over widespread human rights abuses and allegedly stolen elections, his forced abduction remains unlawful and indefensible.

“Impunity is bad whether it is done by Nigeria or America and must not be justified,” Adeyanju said, stressing that illegality does not become acceptable simply because the target is unpopular or accused of serious crimes.

The activist noted that the same voices now condemning the United States had earlier applauded the extraordinary rendition of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader, Nnamdi Kanu, from Kenya to Nigeria, an action that has been widely criticised by legal experts and international rights groups as illegal.

He also accused them of supporting the unconstitutional removal of Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, describing it as part of a dangerous culture of selective outrage and moral inconsistency.

“I have, however, noted the observations of some Nigerian hypocrites who praised the extraordinary rendition of Nnamdi Kanu from Kenya and also the unconstitutional removal of Governor Sim Fubara but now condemning the American action,” Adeyanju stated.

While acknowledging Maduro’s record of repression, killings, and persistent human rights violations, Adeyanju maintained that due process and respect for international law must apply universally.

“Maduro is a brutal, illegitimate dictator who killed many of his countrymen and women for power and continued to violate their human rights till yesterday but he ought not to have been abducted that way. He also stole an election like many Nigerian leaders,” he said.

Adeyanju warned that justifying unlawful actions based on political convenience or personal bias only entrenches global lawlessness and undermines the struggle for justice and accountability.

Thugs Allegedly Acting For Benin Traditional Council Assault, Strip, Haul Actor Don Pedro Obaseki To Palace Over ‘Disrespect’ Claims

Thugs claiming to be acting on behalf of the Benin Traditional Council have seized, stripped, and assaulted a Nigerian actor, Dr Don Pedro Obaseki, accusing him of being an “Oghionoba”, a term translated as an enemy of the Oba of Benin, Ewuare II.

Pedro Obaseki was dragged to the Benin Kingdom Palace by a group of Benin youths over claims of recent activities and remarks they described as disrespectful to the Oba.

Sources said the incident followed Pedro Obaseki’s recent attendance at a meet-and-greet event in London organised in honour of his cousin, former Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki, who they also labelled “Oghionoba.”

In a viral video seen by SaharaReporters, the actor was stripped to his boxers, forced to kneel, and made to walk on his knees within the palace premises.

He was subsequently taken before individuals dressed in white attire and adorned with beads, believed to be palace chiefs or officials, who escorted him into the palace while the mob remained outside.

The rift between former Governor Obaseki and the Oba of Benin, Oba Ewuare II, is a complex dispute involving cultural heritage, administrative power, and a deep-seated historical family rivalry.

The conflict gained significant public attention around 2021 and escalated until the end of Obaseki's tenure in 2024.

The most public flashpoint was the repatriation of thousands of artifacts (the Benin Bronzes) looted by British forces in 1897.

The Oba maintained that the artifacts were stolen from the Palace and should return to the Palace. He advocated for a Benin Royal Museum to be built within the Palace grounds.

However, the then-governor proposed the Museum of West African Art (MOWAA), managed by a private entity called the Legacy Restoration Trust. He envisioned this as part of a broader cultural district to boost tourism.

In 2023, the Federal Government of Nigeria stepped in and officially recognized the Oba of Benin as the legal owner and custodian of all repatriated artifacts, effectively siding with the Palace and dealing a blow to Obaseki’s plan.

Also, a major administrative clash occurred when several Enigie (traditional dukes) in Edo South requested the state government to create new, independent traditional councils.

The Palace saw this as a "divide and rule" tactic by Obaseki to "balkanize" the Benin Kingdom and weaken the Oba's central authority.

Igbo Community In Sokoto Marks Christmas With Nnamdi Kanu, Other Inmates In Prison

The Igbo community in Sokoto State marked Christmas Day with detained Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader, Nnamdi Kanu at the Nigerian Correctional Centre.

The community described the humanitarian gesture inspired by the disposition of the detained IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu

During the visit, the community shared meals with the inmates at the Sokoto Correctional Centre.

In a statement signed by Nze A. C. Madu and made available to journalists, the leadership of the Sokoto Igbo community said the outreach was driven by compassion, communal responsibility and the spirit of the Christmas season.

According to the statement, members of the community spent Christmas with inmates at the correctional facility, sharing food and fellowship as part of the visit.

The group said its decision was influenced by what it described as Kanu’s reported preference not to dine alone during the festive season.

“Understanding his (Kanu’s) reported preference not to dine alone, especially during the festive season of Christmas, the community made a decisive and inclusive choice,” the statement said.

“Rather than limiting their generosity to a single individual, they elected to provide festive meals for the entire inmate population of the facility.”

The community said the gesture ensured that all inmates benefited from the celebration.

“This benevolent act ensured that all approximately 1,300 inmates shared in the spirit of the season,” the statement added.

Describing the outreach as deeply rooted in Igbo values, the leadership said the initiative reflected the cultural principle of being one another’s keeper, as well as universal ideals of charity and fellowship.

“It was performed as a humanitarian service to all, irrespective of origin or circumstance,” the statement read. “It underscores a commitment to humanity and shared goodwill, offering a moment of comfort and inclusivity during the holiday period.”

The Sokoto Igbo community expressed hope that the Christmas outreach would foster peace, unity and mutual understanding beyond the festive season.

Kanu is currently being held at the Sokoto Correctional Centre following his transfer after Justice James Omotosho sentenced him to life imprisonment in November 2025 over terrorism counts one, two, four, five and six.

The court also handed him a 20-year jail term on count three and a five-year jail term on count seven, both without an option of fine.

Justice Omotosho delivered the judgment after convicting the IPOB leader on all seven counts of terrorism-related offences.

Although the judgment has attracted widespread condemnation, Kanu has indicated his intention to challenge the conviction and sentence at the appellate court

PoliticsNigeria Set To Borrow N54.7trillion In Three Years by attackgat(op): 12:36pm On Dec 23, 2025
A review of the recently approved Medium Term Expenditure Framework (MTEF) of the Nigerian government for the 2026–2028 period by SaharaReporters shows that a total of N54.7 trillion is projected to be borrowed across the three fiscal years. This means that a cumulative sum of N54.7 trillion is planned as new borrowings in 2026, 2027, and 2028.

According to the MTEF document, new borrowings for 2026 are estimated at N17.8 trillion. Borrowings for 2027 are projected at N21.1 trillion, while N15.8 trillion is planned for 2028.

A breakdown of the figures shows that in 2026, domestic borrowings are expected to amount to N14.3 trillion, while international borrowings are estimated at N3.5 trillion.

In 2027, domestic borrowings are projected to rise to N16.9 trillion, with international borrowings planned at N4.2 trillion.

Further review indicates that in 2028, domestic borrowings are estimated at N12.6 trillion, while international borrowings are expected to total N3.1 trillion.

A previous review of Debt Management Office (DMO) data by SaharaReporters showed that Nigeria’s public debt rose to N149.3 trillion as of March 31, 2025.

This represents an increase from the N144.6 trillion recorded as of December 2024.

According to the data, domestic debt increased by N4.4 trillion between December 2024 and March 2025, rising from N74.3 trillion in December 2024 to N78.7 trillion as of March 2025.

Meanwhile, external debt grew by N350 billion, increasing from N70.28 trillion in December 2024 to N70.63 trillion as of March 2025.

Nigeria’s debt profile has continued on an upward trajectory. While total public debt stood at N144 trillion in December 2024, it had earlier been recorded at N142 trillion as of September 2024.

During that same period, external debt amounted to N68.8 trillion, while domestic debt stood at N73.4 trillion.

The data also showed that as of September 2024, the federal government alone owed N69.2 trillion in domestic debt, while states and the Federal Capital Territory accounted for N4.2 trillion.

These figures suggest that Nigeria has continued to rely heavily on domestic sources to finance its loan portfolio.

The published total debt profile is also significantly higher than the N134.2 trillion Nigeria owed as of June 2024.

As of June 2024, total external debt stood at N63 trillion, while domestic debt amounted to N71.2 trillion.

Out of this total, the federal government’s domestic debt was N66.9 trillion, while state governments accounted for N4.2 trillion.

PoliticsSunday Igboho Fumes As Fulani Herdsmen Kill Two People In His Hometown by attackgat(op): 8:29pm On Dec 20, 2025
Yoruba nation agitator, Chief Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho, has issued a renewed warning to the government following the killing of two residents in Igboho town, Oke-Ogun area of Oyo State, allegedly by suspected Fulani assailants.

In a statement on Saturday, Igboho said the latest attack validates the concerns he has raised repeatedly over the past four years regarding what he described as persistent killings and violent attacks on Yoruba communities by armed Fulani elements.

He lamented that despite several public appeals and warnings to authorities, the situation has continued to deteriorate, forcing many indigenous residents to flee their ancestral homes out of fear for their lives.

“Today, two innocent people have been killed in Igboho. This is exactly what I have been warning the government about for years,” Igboho stated. “Nothing has changed, and our people continue to suffer attacks while those responsible roam freely.”

Igboho accused the government of failing to adequately protect lives and property in the region, stressing that insecurity has become a daily reality for residents of Igboho and surrounding communities.

He called on both the federal and Oyo State governments to take urgent and decisive action to address the killings and restore peace to the area.

According to him, if immediate steps are not taken to safeguard the people and their properties, he would have no choice but to return home to personally defend his community.

“I am calling on the government to act now and protect the lives and properties of the people of Igboho,” he warned. “If nothing is done, I will come back home to defend my people.”

The incident has heightened tensions in Oke-Ogun, with residents calling for increased security presence and swift justice for the victim.

PoliticsThe Complete History Of IPOB by attackgat(op): 6:10pm On Dec 20, 2025
To the countless unnamed Igbo civilians whose lives were lost in protests, raids, disappearances, “Python Dance” operations, false-flag killings, political assassinations, and unlawful detentions, this article honours your memory.

THE BIRTH OF IPOB, A PEACEFUL MOVEMENT ROOTED IN HISTORICAL GRIEVANCE

IPOB did not begin as a militant enterprise. It did not start as a radical movement. It was not conceived as an armed rebellion. It began as a peaceful civil rights movement built around mourning Igbo victims of the 1966 pogroms, remembering the 3 million lost in the Biafra genocide, demanding justice, equality, and fair treatment, insisting on the right to self-determination, seeking protection from persecution, educating new generations about forgotten history

Formed officially in 2012–2013 under Nnamdi Kanu’s leadership, IPOB grew through, Radio Biafra broadcasts, peaceful marches, rallies in major Igbo cities, diaspora activism, symbolic demonstrations and online mobilization

Between 2013 and 2015, IPOB was arguably the most peaceful mass movement in Nigeria, never armed, never violent, never destructive. Nnamdi Kanu framed IPOB not as a secessionist militia, but as “A peaceful people asking for a referendum — nothing more.”

Yet every peaceful march was met with disproportionate force from the state. By 2015, the Nigerian government, led by Muhammadu Buhari, shifted from viewing IPOB as activists to viewing them as a political threat. The stage was set for confrontation.

THE GOVERNMENT RESPONDS — PROTESTS MET WITH BULLETS

Between 2015 and 2016, peaceful IPOB protesters flooded streets across the Southeast:

Aba, Onitsha, Enugu, Nnewi, Owerri, Port Harcourt, Asaba. These were unarmed demonstrations, crowds waving Biafra flags, oung people draped in symbolic colours, women singing freedom songs, elderly men recalling the war years, families rallying for self-determination.

Nigeria responded with live ammunition.

Amnesty International documented protester massacres in Onitsha (2015, 2016), mass arrests in Aba, disappearances in Enugu, targeted shootings in Port Harcourt, torture and extrajudicial executions, public dumping of corpses in borrow pits

By mid-2016, IPOB had suffered over 170 deaths, before ever lifting a stone. Instead of defusing tension, the federal government escalated force. The psychology of the Igbo youth changed forever. A peaceful movement felt cornered. A historical trauma reawakened.

FROM HOPE TO HOSTILITY — THE ESCALATION OF TENSIONS

As IPOB’s popularity increased, so did the paranoia within Nigeria’s political establishment. Southeast governors feared losing influence. Federal security agencies feared a repeat of Boko Haram intelligence failures. Northern political elites feared Igbo political awakening. Western media feared a new secession crisis.

The state began framing IPOB as “violent”, “dangerous”, “extremist”, “a terrorist waiting to explode”

Yet IPOB had no record of attacks, killings, bombings and armed conflict. The fear was political, not factual.

By 2016, a dangerous alliance formed, Southeast governors, Buhari’s government, military elites. Their shared objective:

Stop IPOB before it grows beyond control. This fear would soon lead to the most brutal military operation in the region since the civil war.

THE PYTHON DANCES — MILITARISING THE SOUTH-EAST

Between 2016 and 2018, Nigeria launched three consecutive military operations in the Southeast, Operation Python Dance I (2016), Introduced checkpoints, patrols, intimidation, and the beginning of militarisation, Operation Python Dance II (2017) which featured, raids, house-to-house searche, deadly shootings, occupation of cities, psychological warfare, mass arrests

Operation Python Dance III (2018)

The most intense extended into rural areas, targeting IPOB strongholds. Amnesty International reported secret detentions, torture, killings, unmarked graves, the execution of activists without trial. Python Dance was not a security operation, It was a message, warning and punishment.

A declaration that dissent in Igboland would be met with overwhelming force. It marked the moment Nigeria chose war logic over political logic. And it pushed IPOB into a corner from which it would never fully emerge peacefully.

THE AFARA-UKWU INVASION, THE NIGHT EVERYTHING CHANGED

Nothing radicalised the Southeast as deeply, as painfully, and as irreversibly as the invasion of Nnamdi Kanu’s home in Afara-Ukwu, Umuahia, on September 14, 2017. It was not just a raid, it was a military siege.

Witness accounts describe armoured tanks rolling into a residential neighbourhood, Helicopters hovering above the palace, hundreds of soldiers surrounding every exit route, gunshots lasting hours, youth protesters mowed down, unarmed boys shot while chanting, bodies piled into military trucks, fresh graves dug in surrounding bushes. Kanu’s dog Caesar was shot dead. Kanu’s parents traumatised — both later died from shock. Nigeria claimed it was a “routine operation, but the world saw a political assassination attempt. IPOB remained unarmed and resisted only with their voices.

Yet the Nigerian Army deployed an offensive force large enough for a foreign invasion. Kanu narrowly escaped death, an escape that would shape the next seven years of conflict. The invasion was the point of no return. It birthed bitterness, rage, the erosion of faith in Nigerian unity, the acceleration of IPOB radicalisation and the transformation of Kanu into a martyr-like figure. The Afara-Ukwu attack became the Igbo 9/11 — an event whose emotional aftershocks still reverberate today.

THE PROSCRIPTION — WHEN DEMOCRACY BECAME DICTATORSHIP

Immediately after the Afara-Ukwu invasion, Southeast governors, under pressure and intimidation, convened an emergency meeting. In an act that history will judge harshly, they declared IPOB a terrorist organisation without investigation, evidence, court order or due process. On the same day, Fulani militias were killing villagers in Plateau, Boko Haram was bombing mosques in Borno, bandits were taking over Zamfara, kidnapping syndicates were thriving in Kaduna. None of these were proscribed. Only IPOB, a non-violent movement, was singled out.

The Nigerian Army then released a shameful list of “evidence”:

“They blocked roads, they use sticks and stones, they shout slogans, they criticize the government, they have a radio station”

Not one bomb, not one gun, not one attack, not one violent act.

Yet IPOB was labeled a terrorist group.

The consequences were severe. Young boys were arrested on sight, anyone with a Biafra wristband was detained, fathers disappeared, mothers wept at police stations, bodies appeared in shallow graves.Fear became a permanent guest in Igbo homes. The proscription outlawed peaceful agitation and when you block peaceful resistance, you open the door to desperate resistance.

THE RADICALISATION, A MOVEMENT PUSHED UNDERGROUND

With IPOB banned and hunted, a predictable psychological shift occurred. When peaceful options close, underground options open. Thousands of youths who once marched openly now operated secretly, avoided checkpoints, used aliases, communicated via encrypted channels, attended night meetings, distrusted politicians and police.Communities began hiding activists.Villagers formed secret protective circles.Mothers smuggled food to fleeing boys and fathers taught their sons how to avoid raids. The Southeast gradually transformed into a region under occupation.

The radicalisation was not ideological, it was reactive. The state had forced the movement from the streets into the shadows. The seeds of future armed resistance were planted during this period.

RISE OF ESN, COMMUNITY DEFENSE OR FEDERAL NIGHTMARE?

By late 2020, herdsmen attacks were escalating across Igboland. Communities in Ebonyi, Enugu, Anambra, Abia and Imo, began experiencing kidnappings, farmland destruction, rape, killings, and cattle-driven intimidation.Southeast governors did nothing. Appeals fell on deaf ears, Police ignored reports and villagers felt abandoned. Into this vacuum stepped IPOB.

In December 2020, Nnamdi Kanu announced the creation of the Eastern Security Network (ESN), regional, forest-based volunteer force to protect farmlands, repel invaders, secure rural communitiesand defend vulnerable villages. Initially, ESN enjoyed massive public support. It was the first time in decades that Igbo people felt defended. But to the Nigerian state, ESN was interpreted as a militia threat. The federal government made a grave mistake. Instead of engaging ESN diplomatically, it declared war on them. This was the beginning of full-blown confrontation.

ORLU BOMBARDMENT, A REGION UNDER SIEGE

In January 2021, federal forces deployed fighter helicopters, armoured tanks, artillery vehicles, special forces, surveillance drones into Orlu, Imo State. Why? Because ESN operatives were reportedly present in the surrounding forests.

The Nigerian government launched a military operation inside a civilian town, effectively treating Orlu like Sambisa Forest.Eyewitness testimonies and media reports confirm villages were shelled, houses burned, civilians killed, young men disappeared, residents fled into the bush, corpses lay on street corners and humanitarian access was blocked.

The military siege lasted days. Imo State government denied everything, but videos and satellite images exposed the truth. The Orlu bombardment became the final straw for many youths, the proof that the Nigerian state saw the Igbo as enemies. The war had effectively begun, not because IPOB sought it, but because Nigeria ignited it.

COLLAPSE OF ORDER, THE RISE OF UNKNOWN GUNMEN (2021–2023)

The rise of “Unknown Gunmen” (UGM) in the Southeast was not spontaneous, it was engineered by a perfect storm of five converging forces:

1. Criminal syndicates exploiting the chaos

2. State-sponsored false-flag operations

3. Political hit squads hiding under IPOB’s name

4. Radicalised ESN splinter cells

5. Followers of Simon Ekpa enforcing sit-at-home orders violently

These forces were independent, uncoordinated, and often antagonistic — yet in the media they were carelessly bundled together as “IPOB gunmen.”

In reality, IPOB as an organisation lost control of the narrative, the streets, and the factions.

1. The Collapse of Policing After EndSARS after 2020,Police morale collapsed, checkpoints disappeared, officers deserted rural communities, criminals filled the vacuum, kidnap-for-ransom surged.

This vacuum created the perfect environment for impostors and opportunists. The state, rather than rebuilding trust, chose large-scale repression, and hhis worsened the vacuum.

2. Retaliatory Violence from ESN Cells

Some ESN operatives, especially in forest belts, retaliated against security forces after the Orlu bombardment (2021), Aba/Ohafia raids, Imo mass arrests, extrajudicial executions, torture in military detention and disappearances of activists. These were not IPOB policies, they were reactions by individuals pushed beyond breaking point.

3. Criminal Gangs Wearing the IPOB Identity

By late 2021, criminals discovered three powerful tools: Wear black, carry a rifle, claim to be “ESN”. Once they did that, civilians obeyed out of fear and victims didn’t resist. The media blamed IPOB, police avoided confrontation, government used it as propaganda and confusion deepened. Kidnappers, cultists, armed robbers, and drug-trafficking networks took advantage.

4. State-Sponsored Operations (False Flags)

SBM Intelligence, community testimony, and Amnesty International reported heavily armed attackers using military-grade weapons, tactical operations far beyond criminal skill, attacks coinciding with political events, suspects released mysteriously, victims shot with professional accuracy, identical trucks used in multiple states. Some killings were staged to justify federal militarisation, delegitimise IPOB, target political opponents, discredit local vigilantes amd weaken ESN’s public image

These professionally executed attacks were mislabeled as “Unknown Gunmen.”

5. Political Militias Masked as UGM

Ahead of 2023 elections, ozens of politicians hired hit squads, campaign offices were torched, rivals assassinated, INEC facilities attacked, operatives disguised themselves as “pro-Biafra gunmen”. The Southeast became a battlefield for political power. The result?

A region flooded with violence — none of it clearly traceable.

Outcome: Total Collapse of Public Trust
People no longer kne, who was protecting them, who was attacking them, who to obey, who to avoid, which gunman was political, which was criminal, which was security agency, which was ESN, which was “auto-pilot”.

Fear became the new law.Chaos became the only predictable reality. This breakdown of societal order was the most devastating consequence of the IPOB–Nigeria confrontation.

INTERNAL EARTHQUAKES, SIMON EKPA, FACTIONALISM, AND THE DISINTEGRATION OF IPOB

When Nnamdi Kanu was abducted in June 2021, IPOB’s central command structure collapsed.
A movement built around a single charismatic leader lost its coordinator.
Into that vacuum stepped Simon Ekpa, a Finland-based activist.

Ekpa’s Rise[/b]

He broadcasted aggressively, appealed to the most hurt and angry youths, framed himself as Kanu’s successor, accused IPOB leadership(DOS) of betrayal, gained social media dominance, enforced radical sit-at-home orders. Suddenly, IPOB had two centres of gravity, the Directorate of State (DOS) and Auto-Pilot faction under Ekpa This split was catastrophic.

CRIMINAL SYNDICATES, POLITICIANS & FALSE-FLAGS — A REGION HIJACKED
Between 2021 and 2024, the Southeast became the most complex security theatre in Nigeria.
It was no longer IPOB vs Nigeria, It became IPOB vs IPOB, ESN vs splinter cells, criminals vs civilians, politicians vs opponents, security agencies vs shadows, false flags vs truth. A deadly ecosystem.

NNAMDI KANU — THE PRISONER WHO STILL CONTROLS THE GAME

Despite being detained since 2021, Nnamdi Kanu remains the symbolic head of the Igbo agitatio, the moral anchor of millions, the only figure capable of unifying IPOB factions, the only person whose voice can end sit-at-home, the silent force shaping political outcomes in the region

Even his enemies acknowledge his relevance. Why Kanu is still Influential is because he speaks the language of Igbo historical pain, articulates the injustice ignored since 1966, commands loyalty in the diaspora, has moral legitimacy, maintains ideological clarity and is respected even by some critics

Even from DSS custody his occasional messages calm tensions, his disapproval of violence reduces attacks, his calls for unity still influence factions. He is a prisoner, yet the most powerful Igbo voice alive. Kanu is simultaneously a bargaining chip for Northern elites, a tool to intimidate Southeast governor, a symbol of injustice, a rallying cry for activists, a source of global attention to an unresolved political wound.

His detention stabilises no one, it destabilises everyone. The Nigerian security establishment knows that the Southeast was more peaceful when Kanu was outside. His imprisonment created power vacuums, empowered extremists, legitimised impostors, fragmented IPOB and radicalised youths

THE SOLUTION: A PATH TO PEACE, JUSTICE, AND REGIONAL STABILITY

Nigeria cannot kill an idea born out of 58 years of injustice.Only justice can end agitation, only truth can destroy extremism, only dialogue can bring peace.

Release Nnamdi Kanu, end militarisation of the Southeast, establish a Southeast Regional Security Network, dialogue with all stakeholders

The Igbo nation will never again accept silence, never again accept subjugation, never again accept fear as normal. The struggle is no longer about IPOB. It is about dignity, equality, memory, survival, identity and the future.

A new dawn is possible but only if Nigeria chooses justice over force and the Igbo choose unity over fragmentation.History has returned to demand answers. This time, the answers must be honest.

The headquarters of Imo State anti-kidnapping unit, notoriously known as "Tiger Base", has been in the news lately due to the alleged human rights violations going on there. A report alleges that Tiger Base has become a place where numerous crimes are being commited by Police officers such as extra-judicial killings, torture, extortion and even rape of female suspects held there. Human rights activist and politician, Omoyele Sowore, submitted a detailed report to Amnesty International stating that as much as 200 people may have been killed at Tiger Base.

Yesterday Amnesty International received a new report on police atrocities at Tiger Base, Owerri, Imo state. The report highlighted extrajudicial execution, torture and extortion at the notorious detention centre where Nigerian Police operates outside of the law.

At Tiger Base, victims had been subjected to horrific torture methods, including hanging starvation, beatings, shootings and mock executions, at the hands of callous and corrupt police officers

The report was launched by The Coalition Against Police Tiger Base Impunity (CAPTI) - which is a Nigerian social movement dedicated to promoting a free and democratic Nigeria free from police brutality and oppression. Composed of human rights organizations - ncluding Amnesty International Nigeria, Take It Back (TIB) Lawvers Without Borders, Youth Rights Campaign and over two million activists and supporters
Police atrocities at Tiger Base is a stain on Nigeria's image. Victims and survivors must get justice and violators must be held to account.

PoliticsNnamdi Kanu Gave Me The Names Of 6 Northerners To Help Out Of DSS- Ejiofor by attackgat(op): 1:20pm On Dec 17, 2025
At about the 28th minute of the interview below, one of the main Lawyers of IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu, Barrister Nnaemeka Ejiofor, said that while some people try to paint Kanu as a tribal bigot, the man is far from that. He revealed that before Kanu was convicted, he gave him the names of 6 Northerners detained in the DSS without charge, to help them get out, and also paid their legal bill.

Barrister Ejiofor said that two of the 6 Northerners, Kasimu Aliyu and Simbiatu Abdullahi who were arrested in Zamfara State by DSS, and brought to Abuja without any notification to their families, and were denied any right to contact anyone about their whereabouts for 7 months.

Ejiofor said that when he called their families in Zamfara to tell them that they were in DSS detention, Abuja, they were shocked. They thought they had been kidnapped by bandits and had been waiting for ransome demand. Ejiofor said that he had successfully taken the matter for the release of the 6 Northerners to the Jabi high court, and the matter was coming up for hearing. Ejiofor also revealed that when Nnamdi Kanu was locked up in Kuje Prison in 2015, he was paying the fines of prisoners from different parts of Nigeria, particularly the North, who had option of fine, so they could regain their freedom

Touching Kanu's conviction, Ejiofor said they were preparing to file a robust appeal at Appeal Court, and the judgement would not stand. He touched on the fact that throughout Kanu’s trial, the prosecution could not bring one single witness or person to say he or she killed anyone on Kanu's instructions or broadcast. He said that the prosecution said IPOB killed Gulak even though Imo state Governor, Hope Uzodimma, had said IPOB has nothing to do with his death. He also said that the audio played in court of Kanu telling people to attack the security forces was doctored in such a way to remove the fact that what Kanu said is that if people are unjustly attacked or killed by the security forces, people should rise up and kill the security forces back, as it is self defence.

He was of the opinion that no single crime or act of violence was tied to Kanu during the trial, and the conviction was based solely on spoken words alone.

PoliticsReport Exposes Widespread Torture, Deaths In Imo State Tiger Base by attackgat(op): 9:57am On Dec 16, 2025
According to the findings, at least 200 people died or disappeared while in custody at Tiger Base during the four-year period.

A new damning report has uncovered widespread and systematic human rights abuses at the Anti-Kidnapping Unit of the Nigeria Police Force, Imo State Command popularly known as “Tiger Base.”

The report linked the unit to torture, extrajudicial killings, enforced disappearances, and large-scale extortion between 2021 and 2025.

The report, released by the Centre for Accountability and Transparency Initiatives (CAPTI), is based on extensive field investigations, survivor testimonies, accounts from families of victims, and analysis of official records.

It concludes that the scale and pattern of abuses amount to crimes under both Nigerian and international law.

According to the findings, at least 200 people died or disappeared while in custody at Tiger Base during the four-year period.

Among the identified victims are Japhet Njoku, Magnus Ejiogu, and Ekene Francis Elemuwa.

Several others remain unidentified, with their bodies either missing or allegedly withheld by the police authorities.

The report paints a grim picture of a detention facility where torture was routine.

Former detainees described severe beatings, electric shocks, and prolonged suspension by limbs. In some particularly brutal cases, officers were accused of using filing machines to inflict serious bodily harm on detainees.

Beyond physical torture, the report says Tiger Base functioned as a legal “black hole” where constitutional rights were routinely denied.

Suspects were allegedly detained for weeks or months without charge, denied access to lawyers, and cut off from their families.

CAPTI further revealed that arbitrary detention was used to fuel a lucrative extortion racket.

Families were reportedly forced to pay between ₦200,000 and ₦20 million to secure the release of detainees, including in cases that should have been treated as civil disputes rather than criminal matters.

The report also documented at least 50 cases of enforced disappearance linked to the facility.

Victims such as Pastor Chinedu, Reverend Cletus Nwachukwu, Onuocha Johnbosco, and Sunday and Calista Ifedi were said to have vanished after being taken into Tiger Base custody, with their families still receiving no official explanation.

Investigators accused the unit of deliberately obstructing accountability by denying access to human rights organisations, blocking the National Preventive Mechanism, concealing detention records, and intimidating potential witnesses.

Female detainees, the report noted, faced additional abuses, including alleged rape, sexual exploitation, and forced labour. These acts, CAPTI said, occurred within a system that treated detainees as property rather than as citizens entitled to constitutional protection.

Despite multiple petitions submitted to the Inspector-General of Police, the Police Service Commission, and the National Human Rights Commission, the report said no conclusive investigation has been carried out and no officer has been criminally prosecuted. Tiger Base, it added, continues to operate with “unbridled impunity.”

CAPTI warned that the situation at Tiger Base reflects a broader crisis of policing misconduct and corruption in Nigeria’s South-East, where security concerns are increasingly used to justify parallel systems of detention operating outside the rule of law.

“The unit has become an instrument of terror, extortion, and political repression rather than a law enforcement body protecting citizens,” the report stated.

Among its recommendations, CAPTI called for the immediate disbandment of Tiger Base, the transfer of all personnel for independent investigation, and the commencement of criminal prosecutions against officers implicated in torture, killings, and extortion.

It also urged the release or proper charging of all detainees held beyond constitutional limits, the strengthening of civilian oversight mechanisms, and full reparations for victims and their families.

The report warned that without urgent intervention, Tiger Base would continue to function as a “death chamber” for residents of Imo State, risking a repeat of the conditions that sparked the #EndSARS protests, with potentially more devastating consequences.

“Nigeria stands at a crossroads,” the report concluded, “between enforcing accountability and allowing security units to operate beyond the law, at the cost of countless lives.”

Politics10th Anniversary Of The Zaria Massacre by attackgat(op):
On the 12th of December 2015, the then Chief Of Army Staff, General Tukur Burutai, visited the Army depot in Zaria, Kaduna. After leaving the depot, his convoy ran into a group of Shiite Muslims, under the organisation the Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN), during their annual pilgrimage procession. An argument started between Soldiers and IMN leaders over giving way to the Army Chiefs convoy. Things escalated, one thing led to the other, the Army accused IMN of trying to assassinate General Burutai, and attacked the procession

What happened next was three days of massacre as the Nigerian Army opened fire on the group, reinforced, surrounded the IMN enclave in Zaria. Amnesty International and the Islamic Human Rights Commission(IHRC) reported that:

In the ensuing orgy of bloodshed, security forces gunned down men, women and children before razing buildings connected to the movement. Hundreds more were injured. Witnesses and victims reported signs of widespread force and cruelty with allegations of looting, arson, mutilation, mass graves, torture, rape and other inhumane acts levelled at the Nigerian army.

The movement’s leader Sheikh Ibrahim Zakzaky and his wife Zeenah were both shot and injured in the attack and saw three of their children killed. They were subsequently detained for many years without trial while Nigerian authorities took steps to crush the social and political movement.

Between the 12th and 14th of December 2015, the Nigerian Army massacred an estimated over 1000 unarmed people. In a desperate bid to cover up the massacre, the Army carted away hundreds of bodies and buried them in a mass grave in Mando area of Kaduna. The the President of Nigeria, Buhari, who never hid his animosity towards the Shiites, rebuked the group for blocking the way of a General. Buhari would later brand IMN a terrorist organisation. Buhari would later repeat this misadventure 2 years later with IPOB, declaring operation Python dance against them, invading Nnamdi Kanu's house, killing unarmed people and branding IPOB a terrorist group. This tipped the peaceful South East of Nigeria into insecurity it suffers today

The government would later admit that 340 people were killed in the Zaria bloodshed, however, human rights groups that investigated the killings has put the figure as well over 1000 people

Nobody has ever been prosecuted for the Zaria massacre

Houses, farm produce, domestic animals, and other valuables worth hundreds of millions of naira were reportedly destroyed during the mayhem.

Death toll has risen to nine after soldiers allegedly opened fire on protesting women in the Lamurde Local Government Area of Adamawa State on Monday.

Also, 51 others are receiving treatment for varying degrees of gunshot wounds—many of them life-threatening.

SaharaReporters earlier reported that at least seven women were gunned down in a chilling incident involving troops said to be escorting Brigade Commander Amaechi Agwu of the 23 Brigade, Nigerian Army, Yola. The soldiers allegedly fired live rounds at the demonstrators in Lamurde.

A respected community leader, providing an update on Tuesday, said: “After the dust settled and a proper count was taken, these are the figures: 9 dead; 23 in hospital in Numan; 28 in hospital in Yola — bringing the total to 60.”

Repeated calls to the spokesperson for the state police command, SP Suleiman Nguroje, went unanswered, and a WhatsApp message sent to him had not been replied to at the time of filing this report.

Houses, farm produce, domestic animals, and other valuables worth hundreds of millions of naira were reportedly destroyed during the mayhem.

Meanwhile, the 23 Brigade on Tuesday issued a random statement denying that its troops shot at protesters.

In a statement signed by the brigade’s spokesperson, Captain Olusegun Abidoye, the army said a joint team of soldiers, police, and other security operatives only cleared barricades mounted by the women to secure the Lamurde council secretariat, claiming that “assailants” were advancing to set it ablaze.

Abidoye also stated that Brigadier General Amechi Agwu was not at the scene, noting that he was attending an online conference convened by the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shuaibu, at the time of the incident.

With many victims battling fatal gunshot injuries, residents fear the death toll may rise even further.
