PoliticsIdara Gold Discharged And Acquitted By Federal High Court by attackgat(op): 5:06pm On Oct 11, 2025
Idara Gold was yesterday discharged and acquitted of all charges by Justice Binta Nyako of the Federal High Court Abuja

Idara Godwin, better known as Idara Gold is a young Biafran activist from Akwa Ibom State. In 2021, she celebrated her 20th birthday by posting pictures of her self in Biafran attire. This made the DSS to arrest her at her residence in Enugu, and bundled her to DSS Headquaters in Abuja where she was held for a year without any charge. She was denied visits by her family and Lawyer. She was later transferred to a detention centre in Kainji, Niger State

Her family then applied for an enforcement of her fundamental rights, the DSS filed an affidavit that she was being investigated for terrorism. In 2022, the DSS charged Idara Gold to court for terrorism, being an IPOB member and concealing information. In 2023, Idara Gold was granted bail.

Yesterday, after almost 4 years, her ordeal came to an end as she was cleared of all charges and discharged

PoliticsImo Youths Accuse State Vigilante, Ebube-agu, Of Extra-judicial Killings by attackgat(op): 11:39am On Oct 11, 2025
The national president of Orluzurumee Youth Assembly (OYA), Prince Izunna Obiefule, has accused the Imo State government-sponsored vigilante outfit, Ebubeagu Security Network, of extra-judicial killing, maiming, unlawful arrest, and detention of innocent youths in Orlu, Orsu, Oru West, Oru East and other parts of Imo State.

According to him, while the atrocities were being meted out on hapless innocent villagers, government, and security agencies were mum about such activities, saying the local vigilante was doing the job of the police and judiciary within Orlu zone.

Obiefule made the disclosure while speaking during a report presentation and campaign launch, tagged "A Decade Of Impunity, Attacks And Unlawful Killings In South East Nigeria", by Amnesty International in Enugu on Tuesday. He called on the authorities to caution the vigilante operatives to stop being reckless and hostile to the villages, adding that such illicit community policing was very inimical to the porous insecurity situation in the state.

Further, he called on government to adequately equip security agencies to enable them combat crime and insecurity to a standstill, so as to restore security, peace and comfort in Imo State, particularly in Orlu senatorial zone.

OYA opined that adequate fighting equipment, gadgets and operational vehicles will strengthen security agencies to be proactive in fighting criminals who also use sophisticated arms and ammunition to unleash mayhem on the people especially those who are helpless.

Obiefule however regretted that government and the security agents were not doing enough to curtail crime, violence and killing in Imo State particularly in Orlu zone, otherwise insecurity could not have lingered.

While he frowned at the unlawful arrest, long detention, imprisonment, maiming and killing of law-abiding citizens, Obiefule called on government to punish any security agent, whether Police, Army or Vigilante who operated contrary to the law in carrying out security duties.

He said, "Orlu senatorial zone is the worst hit of the insecurity situation in Imo State. The Police and the judiciary should rise and caution the excesses of some security agents including the vigilante outfits. It is a thing out of place that law-abiding youths are being dehumanized and killed on daily basis in Orlu, Orsu, Oru West and Oru East especially.

"Security agents should be professional in dealing with the insecurity situation so that innocent people and their property would not be destroyed as violations of human rights in South East have grown beyond control", he said.

Further, he listed greed, corruption, selfishness, wickedness by government officials as the major cause of insecurity in the region, adding that good governance and youth empowerment can contain and curtail crime and violence if they are prioritized.

Obiefule said, "For crime, violence and insecurity to reduce or be eliminated entirely in South East, government officials should shun greed, corruption, selfishness and marginalization and embrace good governance, purposeful leadership as obtained in a democratic setting.

"OYA, as the apex and umbrella youth body of Orlu senatorial district, is calling on security forces to improve in securing law-abiding citizens.

"Government should adequately equip security apparatuses with modern weapons, gadgets to be able to combat insecurity. Youth should shun crime and violence - organ harvesting, kidnapping, armed robbery, cultism, banditry, terrorism and embrace hard work to become useful", Obiefule said.

AgricultureKwara Farmers Cry Out As Terror Attacks Cripple Farms by attackgat(op): 10:25am On Oct 03, 2025
Kwara Tomato Farmer Cries Out As Terror Attacks Cripple Farms, Livelihoods; Accuses Federal Lawmakers Of Abandoning Constituents

Kwara State farmer and CEO of Versa Farms, Ibrahim Toyeeb, has raised an alarm over what he described as the devastating impact of terrorist attacks on communities, farms, and livelihoods in the state, accusing elected federal lawmakers of abandoning their constituents.

Mr Toyeeb, whose company is among the largest agricultural firms in Kwara, told SaharaReporters that the spate of killings, kidnappings, and raids in Kwara South has left communities traumatised and risks collapsing investments across the region.

While stressing that his appeal was non-partisan but rooted in survival, he urged the Kwara State Governor, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, and security agencies to sustain military deployments, but also ensure intelligence-led operations and relief for the victims.

SaharaReporters had reported on Wednesday’s kidnapping of two farmers at Bokungi Zambufu community under the Lafiagi Emirate, citing NupekoTV.

Eyewitnesses said the assailants stormed the farmland and opened fire “sporadically,” forcing villagers to flee. SaharaReporters had also documented recent attacks in Oke-Ode (Ifelodun LGA), Essanti (Patigi LGA), and Marri Village, where dozens were killed, vigilantes executed, and families displaced.

Mr Toyeeb specifically called out Kwara federal lawmakers, Senator Oyelola Ashiru (Kwara South) and Hon. Raheem Tunji Olawuyi, Chairman of the House Committee on Emergency and Disaster Preparedness, for their silence.

“I mourn every life taken. I mourn every family uprooted. I mourn every field left untended. My people sleep in fear. Silence from those elected to protect us is not neutrality; it is, to us, abandonment. We call on Senator Ashiru and Honourable Olawuyi to show leadership, to convene security partners, and to secure our communities now,” he said.

“Why has this situation not been mentioned boldly on the floor of the National Assembly? Representation without advocacy is no representation at all.”

The farmer argued that inadequate representation at the federal level has weakened Kwara South’s chances of attracting strong government security interventions. He accused lawmakers of “poor performance and neglect,” saying their failure to amplify the crisis in Abuja has worsened people’s sense of abandonment.

Mr Toyeeb warned that insecurity is not only a human tragedy but also an economic disaster in the making.

Insecurity is destroying Kwara South’s investment potential. If farms close and businesses pull out, families lose their livelihoods, poverty deepens, and the area becomes economically crippled. Versa Farms employs hundreds of people; we are proof of what is possible if safety and stability are assured. This is why I am raising my voice: to protect not just farms, but futures,” he said.

He outlined practical measures to contain the crisis, asking the government to deploy targeted security reinforcements to vulnerable communities, establish a joint federal-state task force with clear command and accountability, conduct rapid humanitarian assessments for displaced families, launch a transparent investigation into the attacks with a time-bound action plan, and convene local leaders, security officials, and civil society to design community-led protection mechanisms.

Meanwhile, SaharaReporters previously exposed how Governor AbdulRazaq’s aides attempted to downplay insecurity by circulating old photographs of Nigerian Air Force strikes in Borno State and passing them off as fresh operations in Kwara.

On September 22, the governor’s aide, Olayinka Fafoluyi (aka Solace), shared images of airstrikes on his Facebook page, claiming they were deterrence operations against bandits in Oke-Ode. A fact-check traced the pictures to Operation HADIN KAI in Borno on October 25, 2024.

Residents dismissed the spin as insensitive, given the wave of killings that claimed at least 12 vigilantes and the Baale of Ogbayo during a dawn raid in Oke-Ode.

From Oke-Ode to Patigi, villagers continue to flee en masse amid repeated raids. In Essanti, two sons of a youth leader were abducted in daylight, with kidnappers boasting that the move would “reduce the need for night invasions.”

In Marri village, assailants struck under heavy rainfall, killing one, injuring another, and carting away motorcycles before soldiers intervened.

Mr Toyeeb noted that if lawmakers and the state government do not act with urgency, Kwara South will be stripped of both its people and its economic lifeline.

“The blood of farmers stains these fields. Yet our voices go unheard in Abuja. If Kwara South loses its farms, its industries, and its people, it will not just be an insecurity crisis, it will be the end of our economic future,” he warned.

PoliticsIPOB Responds To Tinubu's Independence Day Address by attackgat(op): 4:34pm On Oct 01, 2025
The attention of the Indigenous People of Biafra IPOB) under the command and leadership of our great leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, has been drawn to the divisive and hateful Independence Day address delivered by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in which he recklessly and falsely lumped IPOB with Boko Haram, whilst in the same breadth exonerating ISWAP Al-Qaeda in the Maghreb and Lakaruwa. By not mentioning them and focusing only on Boko Haram and IPOB, Tinubu effectively signalled they are not terrorist groups.

This deliberate falsehood cannot stand unchallenged. IPOB is a peaceful, globally recognized movement pursuing self determination through nonviolent means. Not a single shred of verifiable evidence has ever been presented in any court of law linking IPOB or our leader to terrorism, kidnapping, or killings. The Federal High Court in Abuja has already ruled unequivocally that IPOB is not a terrorist organization as far back as March 2017. That subsisting judgment has never been vacated. Tinubu, a man supposedly educated in the United States, knows very well that an exparte order cannot proscribe a mass movement of millions of people without adversarial hearing. That ''proscription" was nothing but a worthless piece of paper abused by successive regimes to unleash mayhem, massacres, and extrajudicial killings upon unarmed Biafrans.

The Hypocrisy of Tinubu's Speech:
It is hypocritical and insulting for Tinubu to, demonize IPOB while exonerating Fulani killer herdsmen who are daily terrorizing citizens from Kwara to Plateau, from Benue to Enugu. When entire communities are wiped out, his government calls it "farmer-herder clashes." Yet, when unarmed Igbo youths protest peacefully, they are branded terrorists. This double standard exposes Tinubu's deep-seated prejudice against the Igbo race. As Tinubu is fixated with IPOB, at the behest of the British and Igbo quislings that pass as politicians in lgbo land, Kwara State has been overrun by the real terrorists from supporter of APC territories.

A Message to the Toothless Igbo Political Class:
Tinubu dares to insult IPOB because he knows that the so-called Igbo political class are weak, spineless errand boys of Abuja--Efulefus without conscience. In his speech, Tinubu did not only indict IPOB; he indirectly indicted the shameless politicians who invited him into Igboland to dance on the graves of their own people. They should know that history will not absolve them.

IPOB's Position:

We state categorically that IPOB is not Boko Haram, not ISWAP, not Al-Qaeda. We are a people struggling for our survival in the face of state sponsored genocide. Our leader is still being held illegally in DSS dungeon despite multiple court rulings ordering his release. If Tinubu truly believes in justice, let him obey the courts instead of propagating lies.

The world must take note: IPOB rejects and condemns Tinubu's hate speech. His attempt to criminalize an entire nation of Igbo people through the backdoor of state propaganda will fail. The struggle for Biafra's liberation is a just cause rooted in truth, justice, and international law. No amount of blackmail will erase that.

PoliticsSouth East Governors Are Pushing For Nnamdi Kanu’s Release – Otti by attackgat(op): 8:37pm On Sep 27, 2025
Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, has said governors of the South East are in discussions with the Federal Government over the release of the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu.

Speaking during his monthly media interaction with journalists on Thursday, Otti disclosed that the region’s governors were making efforts behind the scenes to secure Kanu’s freedom.

Answering questions on the IPOB leader’s fate, he said: “The information and assurances are not for public consumption. As his governor, I am in the forefront of ensuring that he comes back. The South East governors are also involved. So, we are discussing.”

The governor, however, noted that beyond the Kanu matter, his administration remains committed to strengthening security across the state, especially as the year draws to a close.

“We will also continue to support the agencies, supporting the police, the army, the DSS, with little things to make their lives easier. We are also renovating and expanding the prison, not that we are expecting more criminals to be sent there,” he said.

He commended security agencies for maintaining relative peace in Abia, but urged residents to remain vigilant during the ember months.

“The state has been relatively peaceful. I want to use this opportunity to thank the security agencies, the army, and the officers who have worked and continue to work very hard. But it is never over yet. We have just launched into the ember months. And we all know what goes with ember months. I am using this opportunity to call on all of us to be more security-conscious. To report whatever we see. We should not keep quiet. A large part of the success in security is information. We have our own ways of gathering information. But if you also support what the government is doing with information, it will be very helpful.”

PoliticsThrowback: "I Would Jail Awolowo Again" - Justice Sowemimo by attackgat(op): 7:33pm On Sep 22, 2025
Justice George Sodeinde Showemimo was Chief justice of Nigeria from 1983 to 1985. However, many people dont know that in 1963, he was the Judge that sat on the treason trial of Obafemi Awolowo. He later convicted and sentenced Awolowo to 10 years in prison. In 1990, he granted an interview where he stated why he jailed Awolowo, and that he would do it again if the case came before him.

'What Dr. Maja, the first prosecution witness said, nobody said a thing about it. He said they (the suspects) were all lined up by Chief Awolowo who told them to deny that they made confessional statements that Kwame Nkrumah [the Ghanaian Head of State] gave 60,000 pounds to him (Awolowo) in preparation for the coup."

Q: "Since that celebrated trial, the issue has been that you were under pressure from the [Tafawa Balewa] government [to convict the defendants). Is that true?"

JUSTICE SOWEMIMO: "There was no pressure from anybody."

Q: "How about the Awo people. Was there any effort to influence you not to imprison him?"

JUSTICE SOWEMIMO: "Look, the man is dead. One does n not say something about dead people. You try to forget. If you are in a position to give judgment in an African community, there is always a tendency: you have pressures. But your own [as a judge] is to do that which is just, but you resist all. There must be pressures; you resist all, wherever they come. You can't avoid it in an African community. We are still growing May be in the course of time we will get over it."

Q: "Sir, your statement at the tria| where you said 'My hands are tied' has been very controversial. What did you really mean by the phrase?"

JUSTICE SOWEMIMO: "The man (Chief Obafemi Awolowo) said, 'please, for God sake, release me, let me go away: I told him, I have jailed all the others. I have sentenced them to prison in a matter n which I found you are the leader who composed and did everything, and only got these chaps to take part. If I have jailed them, I can't release you. I have done the judgment I can't go back again. My hands are tied! But the people said, 'Ah they have tied him with money.' But they refused to state what Awolowo said. He was begging me! But I said, how can I justify my conscience?' But the next day, the Daily Express, the Daily Times and the Tribune carried it this way: 'My Hands Are Tied by Government'. But what was their own gain if I jailed Awolowo or not?"

Q: "You spoke before of the element of pressure in our African community. In view of this factor and your being a Yoruba man, have the Yoruba as a people found you a sell-out for jalling Awolowo their leader?"

JUSTICE SOWEMIMO: "When I was becoming a judge it was not because I was a Yoruba man. So what my look out? It's all politics and they would want to twist everything. It was deliberate mischief. It was Justice [Sigismund Olanrewaju] Lambo who tried Pa Anthony Enahoro [as one of the defendants], and nobody shouted. You know at first Enahoro escaped [from Nigeria]. He was [later] extradited from London [to face his trial). But Awo controlled the newspapers, The Tribune, Daily Express and others [at the time]. They were all Action Group papers. Whatever they printed was gospel truth."'

Q: "Has there been a standing malice between you and the Awo followers?"

JUSTICE SOWEMIMO: "You cannot avoid that. Even though not in a particular way. I try to forget things. When Awolowo died, I wrote a condolence, message 'One is sorry to learn of somebody who dies. May his soul rest in peace.' But the Tribune [newspaper] was annoyed that I didn't go [on] to say, Africa has lost a great man. The Yorubas have lost a great leader. Because I jailed him. For not saying that the Tribune wrote what they wanted to write about me. That's their own lookout. You just have to develop thick skin."

Q: "Have you suffered any deprivations from society for being the Judge who jailed Awo?"

JUSTICE SOWEMIMO: "Can you help me out? Unless you can, then we [should] forget those things. Unless we forget, we can't get out of it. When these people are in power they want you to know. But if you keep a straight mind that you did what is right you succeed unless you give way, then, you have your self to blame."

Q: "In view of the controversial nature of that case, could you have refused to hear the case in your court?"

JUSTICE SOWEMIMO: "If you are a Judge you don't distinguish between one case and another. If a case involved my brother, I wont do it. But none of those I tried was my brother .... You have to go through all the files and satisfy your conscience. So I read every statement [in the case files]. The whole thing was so plain. But for the fact that it has taken such a long time now, I cannot tell you from my head all what I came across in the statements. You see, the unfortunate thing you see among Nigerians is that because the man is a Yoruba, he should not convict another Yorubaman. Because he is [lgbo], he should not convict another [Igbo] man, and because he is Hausa, he should not convict another Hlausaman. And we say we are equal to the white people! Do they do that in their countries? If Awo were convicted by a European, would you be shouting? Because l am a Yoruba man."

Q: "Do you think that Awo's trial had any effect on your career on the Bench until you retired?"

JUSTICE SOWEMIMO:"| became Chief Justice [of Nigeria]. It was not because of that. It was turn by turn. I went through the ropes. I became what I was destined to be. I did my work all along, became a [High Court] judge, then a Supreme Court judge, and then Chief Justice of Nigeria. . Governments don't control the judiciary."

Q:"If you were presented with that case again, would you take the same decision? Do you now regret jailing Awolowo?"
JUSTICE SOWEMIMO: "Never. If I sit on it again today, I will do the same thing."

Bandits Strike Again In Katsina, Ambush NSCDC Officers, Kill One

Some gunmen suspected to be bandits have reportedly killed an officer of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), identified as CCA Adamu Abdullah, 37, in an ambush along Yantumaki–Danmusa road.

Escalating Atrocities of Bandits Must End

Over a week bandits have sacked some villages in Sokoto. Hundreds of people displaced by frequent bandits attacks, over the weekend, blocked one of the major roads linking Kebbi and Sokoto state,to draw attention to their plight, as bandits continue to deprive them of the right to life, personal liberty and dignity.
Amnesty International has documented an alarming escalation in attacks and abductions in several states in north west Nigeria since January 2020. In this part of Nigeria, gunmen locally referred to as 'bandits,' frequently storm villages on motorcycles and heavily armed. They shoot sporadically at people, set houses on fire, steal cattle, rape women/girls, destroy farm produce and abduct villagers for ransom.
This is pushing the many parts of Sokoto and Kebbi state to the brink of a major humanitarian crisis. The Nigerian authorities failure to stem the violence is costing people's lives and livelihoods, and without immediate action many more lives may be lost

Politics3,000 Residents Flee Communities Over Bandits Attack In Kwara by attackgat(op): 12:36pm On Aug 19, 2025
No fewer than 3,000 residents of 15 communities in Babanla town in Ifelodun Local Government Area of Kwara State,, at the weekend reportedly fled the communities over the reported incessant attacks by suspected kidnappers and bandits.

In another development, Bauchi State Police Command has confirmed that one Irmiya Yohanna, 40, of Kaduna-Bogoro in Bogoro Local Government Area of the state, has been gruesomely killed.

In Kwara, already, the federal government has deployed five war fighter jets, while police have also deployed joint security personnel to the town to protect life and property.

THISDAY checks investi-gations revealed that among the affected communities deserted by the residents are Eka, Upper Eka, Lower Eka, Kudagbari, Gbanmu, Oloruntele, Baba Sango, Ibudo Idowu, Ibudo Olosun, Ayetoro, and Apata Olosun.

It was gathered that the suspected kidnappers and bandits have been attacking these communities forthe the last two months.

Sources close to the Babanla town told journalists over the weekend that the incident has forced many of the affected residents to relocate to safer areas, which hitherto has affected the socio-economic growth of the areas.

Sources said that the latest incident was last Friday, when over 200 bandits invaded the main town of Babanla and killed about five persons, including a police man, and also carted away property.

Speaking with journalists at the weekend on the incident, the traditional ruler of Babanla town, His Royal Highness, Oba Alliu Alabi Yusuf Adegboyega, said: “The bandits and kidnappers have been terrorising us here in Babanla communities for the past two months now.

“And the situation was so serious that several residents of 15 communities that surrounded Babanla town have deserted the communities for fear of being attacked by the bandits.”

He said that,he last attack happened ast Friday ,where over 200 bandits on motorbikes invaded the main town of Babanla and attacked the police station and shops of the residents of the town.

During the attack, five people were killed, including a policeman man and also burnt the police station at Babanla.”

Oba Adegboyega, who lauded the quick response from he state government and security agencies in the state for curbing the attack, said that the response of the affected stakeholders has restored normalcy to the town.

He also said that the deployment of soldiers, vigilantes, policemen, and war-fighting jets has gone a long way to restore peace to the town.

Adegboyega, however, called for the establishment of military barracks in the area to bring a permanent solution to the influx of suspected kidnappers and bandits to the town and other adjoining towns and villages.

Meanwhile, the state Police Command at the weekend has reinforced more security agents in Babanla town.

The state Police Commissioner, Mr. Adekimi Ojo, stated this in Ilorin in a statement after a joint on-site assessment with the state Director of State Security Service(DSS) of the town.

The statement, which was signed by the state Police Command Public Relations Officer(PPRO), Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi, said: “‎On August 8, 2025, armed criminals in their hundreds, riding on motorcycles, invaded Babanla community, attacked the Divisional Police headquarters, and raided the market.

“The assailants fired sporadically, killing five people, including a police officer, Adejumo Wasiu. A swift and coordinated response by police operatives, Nigerian Army personnel, vigilantes, and local hunters repelled the attack, restored order, and initiated a full-scale manhunt for the perpetrators.

PoliticsPeter Obi Visits Fish Magnate's Mother by attackgat(op):
Today, I paid a condolence visit to Mrs Esther Chinyere Onyekesi to commiserate with her over the painful tragic loss of her beloved son, Ifesinachi Onyekere, Managing Director of Fish Magnet Outlet.

Ifesinachi was a promising young Nigerian SME entrepreneur based in Awka. Tragically, he was kidnapped and later killed by yet-to-be-identified criminals, who abandoned his remains in Amawbia. This shocking and senseless act of violence is a painful reminder the worsening insecurity in our society.

we must all raise our voices to strongly condemn such heinous acts. I call on our security agencies to thoroughly investigate this brutal murder and bring the perpetrators to justice. Our society must not become a haven for lawlessness. We must all work together -government, community, and citizens alike -to build a safer, more secure Nigeria.

May God, in His infinite mercy, grant eternal rest to Ifesinachi Onyekere, and may He give his family the strength and fortitude to bear this heartbreaking loss.

PoliticsNigerian Civil War: How I Survived Execution By Nigerian Soldiers - Nwaojobo by attackgat(op): 7:40pm On Aug 09, 2025
A 78-year old grandfather, from Umuabugu Eje, Umuissai, Imufu Enugu Ezike, Mr Thomas Ogbu Nwaojobo, was captured as a young boy and ‘executed’ alongside his elder brother, Lawrence by Nigerian soldiers during the Nigeria – Biafra civil war in 1967. The incident occurred at Enugu- Ezike, in the present Igboeze North Local Government Area of Enugu State.

Local war preceding the Biafra war

“Before the civil war, there was another local war between the people of Enugu-Ezike in the present Igboeze North Local Government Area, and its border town neighbour, Ofante in Kogi State. The war preceded the civil war. During that war, the Ofante people killed our war hero, Ogbu Nwugbabe from Aji, Enugu Ezike. Ogbu Nwugbabe had what we now call ‘Odieshi’, an antidote for dane guns which was in vogue then. It was used in fighting the Ofante war. He was our war commander.

Ogbu Nwugbabe had killed an Ofante man, whose son was a Nigerian soldier. So, the son of the Ofante man returned home with his military rifle and joined his native people in the battle field and shot several of Enugu Ezike people including Ogbu Nwugbabe who, it was believed, could not be killed with any gun. They later brought his headless corpse to the then District Officer, DO, at Nsukka, where it was confirmed that the bullet that felled him was from a military rifle. Shortly after his killing, the local war ended and the Nigeria – Biafra civil war started.

Pandemonium as Nigerian soldiers overran our area

“I had then left Nsukka to collect food items from home, since I was living alone as an apprentice. I was learning auto- re-wiring and battery charging at Nsukka. However, after collecting the food items, I came out to Ogurute, the headquarters of the old Igboeze North Local Government Council to board a vehicle to Nsukka but could not get any vehicle because the civil war had started and the Nigerian soldiers had overrun our area. I then trekked to Nsukka which was a distance of over 12 kilometres. I was young then and didn’t understand the import of the soldiers at Enugu Ezike abandoning their make-shift barracks and duty posts. However, by the time I got to Nsukka, residents of Ibagwa and Obukpa were already running into Nsukka. There was pandemonium and everybody was running helter-skelter. So, the only option was to go back to my village- Imufu, Enugu Ezike. Again, there was no vehicle to go home and I decided to trek back home.

"We were trekking back to Enugu Ezike peacefully until we got to the boundary between Nsukka and Obukpa, when we met Nigerian soldiers firing at civilians at the market. We had not reached the market, but we were watching from a far distance as Nigerian soldiers were firing at the unarmed civilians. While we were watching the soldiers firing at civilians in the market and everybody running in different directions, I saw one driver, Romanus Mamah, whose taxi, a Morris Minor saloon car, was fully loaded and he was driving towards the place where the soldiers were shooting at the civilians. I then started shouting, asking him to stop but he didn’t stop. He must have thought that we were stopping him to give us a lift.

He drove towards the soldiers and they killed him with all his passengers. Late Romanus Mamah from Umuogili Eze, was employed by the Ekere-ezes. We later went through a footpath from Nsukka to Enugu Ezike. When I returned from Nsukka, I told my people that things had changed for the worst and that we should run. I told them that Biafran soldiers had been driven out of Ogurute, Ibagwa and Obukpa respectively and that the Nigerian soldiers were heading towards Nsukka, killing innocent civilians indiscriminately.

How I was captured alongside my elder brother

“But, as we were running, I turned back and saw that Nigerian soldiers had captured my elder brother, behind me. His name was Lawrence Ogbu. Our father’s name was Ogbu Nwojobo. As a young boy, I thought I shouldn’t leave my elder brother, and I turned back and went to the soldiers, who, then, also arrested me. They arrested three of us at the same place; my elder brother Lawrence, Abu Nwugwoke and myself. However, Abu Nwugwoke spoke fluent Hausa Language, because he grew up in the north. He was also among the few Muslims in our village. He spoke Hausa to the soldiers and they released him.

So, the soldiers then took us to their station. There, they tied our hands behind our backs and ordered three soldiers to take us away and execute us, with our hands tied behind our backs. They led us to a nearby village, known as Mkpamte and asked us to lie face- down while being handcuffed. So we laid down and they shot each of us from the back, one after the other. Lawrence died instantly. They shot me on the left side from the back and I fainted, after some struggling, still lying face down.

My miraculous survival after being shot

“The soldier that shot me obviously targeted my heart and ribs but missed his targets. So, I was there for two days, when a very old man who was living in the compound came with a hoe to bury each of us in shallow graves. He had buried others including Lawrence the same way. However, when it got to my turn, he discovered that I was still alive with my two eyes open. He asked me for my name and where I came from and I told him. The old man, Onoja Nwidoko, was compassionate. He then promised to make efforts to locate my parents or relatives, so that they could come and take me away.

He later came back to inform me that our home had been deserted and that the few people he saw started running when they sighted him. Those who were bold enough to wait and listen to him didn’t want to follow him to where I was lying down, dying and decaying. After narrating his efforts to locate my people and how they fled on seeing him, I pleaded with him to be checking on me to know when I would finally die so that he could then bury me to ensure that vultures did not feast on my corpse and he agreed. The old man untied my hands and was actually coming to check on me to know when I would die. When he left on the third day, I started feeling thirsty. There was a piece of broken clay pot where I saw some water which had percolated inside it, so I crawled to the broken pot and drank the water, it was mud water and I started vomiting immediately. I vomited congealed blood and water or what they described as bloody water or hemolyzed blood mixture.

After vomiting a lot of blood water, I now started feeling very hungry. So, again, I crawled towards some rotten Ugiri fruits which were falling into the compound near me. Ugiri is a species of Ogbomo fruit, whose seeds are also used in preparing ‘draw’ soup. I pierced them with my fingers and started sucking them as my teeth were shaky and couldn’t bite or eat anything.

Reunion with my family after six agonising days of trekking in the bush

“On the fourth day, I was able to stand up, but each time I stood up, I would fall down. I couldn’t recognise anywhere again. I later moved away from there but I was moving, stumbling and falling down. Somewhere at Ezillo, when it was dark, I saw a hut where some vigilante people had made a bonfire and I slept near it, with my head near the fireplace. I left there at day break and moved into the bush. While in the bush, some soldiers who were firing at an enemy plane or fighter jet which was hovering around the area passed beside me. They must have thought that I was dead already as flies were perching all over me. Then on the fifth day, I was able to cross the road towards the Alumu Stream at Ekposhi, Enugu Ezike. I followed the road to Onicha Enugu Ezike. I was very weak, extremely tired, but I continued to trudge on.

I arrived Onicha using the moonlight and started moving towards Okata and entered Umuida. I was able to cross Apata Ahebi (now known as Umuida Road) and then entered Imufu. I reached our compound at about 10 pm on the sixth day. This was a journey that would not take a healthy person two
and a half hours on foot, but it took me six days of agony. When I reached our house, my father and his friend, Eze Nwabugu Eya from Umuoyina Nwee Village were inside, discussing in low tones. My father could not recognise my voice when I made noise at the door. He later came and saw me. He had difficulty recognising me. I was wearing a polo shirt which had changed colour. It was soaked with blood, water, dust and sand.

My father then went inside and fetched his Umatu (knife used for tapping palm wine.) The Umatu was as sharp as a razor blade. He used it to cut the polo shirt off my body, opening the wounds where the bullet entered and exited from my chest. It was horrendous. My father asked me about his first son, Lawrence and I couldn’t answer anything. After this, my father and his visitor, Eze Nwabugu Eya, took me to Obeta Nwoyiga’s house, where my mother and other relatives were taking refuge. Immediately they saw me, all of them burst into tears, screaming.

Treatment for gunshot wounds with herbs and roots

I could not eat, but soon after we reached the house, our host, Obeta Nwoyiga and Ogbu Nwa Mamah Attama went into the bush to get some herbal roots with which they gave me first aid.

They boiled some of the roots which I drank while they crushed the others in a mortar. They used the paste from the crushed roots to rub on the wounds. I was treated with the herbs for another six days, making it exactly 12 days of my agony. On that same day, my father and his host, Obeta Nwoyiga, went and fetched Ambrose Abugu, who was working as health attendant at the Enugu Ezike Maternity Home before the war, now Enugu- Ezike General Hospital. Ambrose gave me some injections inside our hut in the bush.

I had emaciated terribly, looking like a stick. You could count all my ribs. I was like a walking or a living corpse. After a month of treatment in the bush, we were advised to leave that place and move further by about three miles into the forest, which we did to avoid being detected by the enemy. This time, we moved far away from the Imufu/Ogrute axis.

Following the advice, my father put me on his bicycle and took me to Umuonu, Umuida. We slept at Umushene, a nearby village to Umuonu because we couldn’t reach Umuonu the same day.

Another raid by Nigerian soldiers

“We were at Umuonu for another four days when the Nigerian soldiers came on another raid, killing civilians and burning their thatched houses, prompting our escape to Ogboli Village again. From Ogboli, we came back to Ugwuntu in Imufu, where my father had built a hut with palm fronds. It was the place where Rufus was coming to treat my gunshot wounds. One day, he came to treat me and after the treatment, we didn’t see him again because the Nigerian soldiers visited his house and killed him. After Rufus’s sudden and tragic death, I was not treated again by anybody, until the end of the war in 1970.
