Equatorial Guinea has been in the news lately because of a top Government official called Baltasar Ebang and his 'adult content creating'. But Equatorial Guinea needs to be in the News for much more than that. Here are 5 incredible things about the country


(1) The President of Equatorial Guinea, Teodoro Obiang Nguema, is the longest serving President in the world. He overthrew his own uncle, Francisco Macías Nguema, in a military coup in 1979, had him executed and seized power. He has been President for 45 years

(2) Equatorial Guinea is one of the few countries in the world where the capital is not in the country. The capital of Equatorial Guinea is the Island of Malabo, in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. It takes a 40 minute flight from Equatorial Guinea, over the Atlantic Ocean to get to it.

(3) Equatorial Guinea is the only country in the world that has Father and son as President and vice-president. While President Obiang Nguema is President, his first son Teodoro Nguema Obiang Mangue, is vice President. In addition to this, 4 of Presidents other son's are ministers of Oil, Sports, mines and industry, and Agriculture. The first lady, Constancia Mangue, is also minister of Health


(4) Equatorial Guinea is amongst the top 10 most corrupt countries in the world. Although Equatorial is an oil rich country, much of its 1.7 million people live in abject poverty while the President, his family and cronies live a lavish life. President Nguema owns six private jets, homes in Cape Town, Paris, Madrid, Las Palmas and Maryland, and bank accounts in numerous countries, including France and Switzerland.He bought a $2.6 million residence in Potomac, Maryland , USA. His wife, Constancia Mangue, also owns $1.5 villa in the same city. His first son, Teodoro Nguema obiang Mangue, is such a big Michael Jackson fan that he once bought the diamond encrusted gloves the late artist used in performing for $270,000. In 2012, the Nguema family mansion in Paris, worth over 100 million Euros was raided by French Police, over 30 million Euros worth of items including 17 luxury cars, cloths and jewelry were seized as part money laundering investigations.

(5) At 82 years old, President Obiang Nguema is the second oldest President in Africa after Paul Biya of Cameroun, and the 5th oldest President in the world. He also has 5 wife's and an unknown number of children

The National Examinations Council (NECO) has released the results of the 2024 internal Senior Schools Certificate Examination (SSCE).

The Registrar and CEO of the Council, Professor Dantani Ibrahim Wushishi, who announced the release on Thursday at the Council Headquarters in Minna, Niger State said, 828,284, representing 60.55 percent scored five credits including English language and Mathematics.

Wushishi said 1,376,423 representing 709, 950 males and 669,473 females registered for this year’s internal examination while 1,367,736 representing 702,112 males and 665,624 sat for the examination.

The registrar said the number of candidates with five credits and above irrespective of the English language and Mathematics was 1,147, 597 accounting for 83.90 per cent while those who with special needs was 2,267.

He said the council recorded 30.1 percent decline in the number of candidates involved in various forms of examination malpractice this year with 8,437 as against 12,030 in 2023.

The registrar revealed that Abia, Imo and Ebonyi states topped the performance while the lowest performing states were Katsina, Kano, Jigawa, Borno and Zamfara.

Professor Wushishi revealed that 40 schools were found to have involved in mass cheating in 17 states, saying that the affected schools would invited for discussion before sanctions would be applied, adding that one school in Ekiti State had been recommended for de-recognition for mass cheating in two core subjects and one science subject.

A man has been remanded in custody after appearing in court, charged with the attempted murder of an Army officer in Kent.

Anthony Esan, 24, is accused of repeatedly stabbing Lieutenant Colonel Mark Teeton in Gillingham, on Tuesday.

The officer, who was wearing his uniform at the time of the alleged knife attack and is in his 40s, is in hospital in a serious but stable condition. Esan, who was arrested near his home in nearby Rochester, is also charged with possessing an offensive weapon in a public place.

He appeared at Medway Magistrates’ Court on Thursday wearing a grey T-shirt and will next appear at Maidstone Crown Court on August 22.

The defendant initially asked “Why?” when he was asked to confirm his name and date of birth.

Police were called to Sally Port Gardens on Tuesday evening, which is near Brompton Barracks, the headquarters of the British Army’s 1 Royal School of Military Engineering Regiment after receiving reports that a soldier had been attacked.

Lt Col Teeton is a chartered engineer working as a course manager in the Army’s Corps of Royal Engineers.

In June this year, he raised nearly £2,500 for Combat Stress, a veterans mental health charity, by running the D-Day challenge in Normandy, a fundraising page shows.

Head of the Army General Sir Roly Walker condemned the stabbing as “horrific and unprovoked”, while Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer said he was “shocked and appalled”.

Scores have been reportedly killed after a heavy-duty truck which experienced brake failure crashed into a long queue of vehicles at an Army checkpoint in Enugu State.

NewsBand gathered that some vehicles were waiting in line to pass through the checkpoint erected by men of the Nigerian Army at Ugwu Onyeama in Enugu State along the Enugu-Onitsha federal highway when the unfortunate incident happened.


About 10 vehicles both private and commercial buses were affected and about 25 people were said to have lost their lives while many more sustained various degrees of injuries and were rushed to the hospital.

“A trailer plying the newly constructed lane failed brake and smashed more than 10 cars both private cars and commercial buses.

“The army checkpoint at that axis continues to claim lives. “More than 25 persons lost their lives instantly and many rushed to the hospital,” a eyewitness said.

A video of the incident which has gone viral online showed the bodies of victims littered on the road.


Some vehicles including a petrol tanker truck were seen plunged into a nearby ditch. Some cars were also seen smashed beyond recognition.
