I've read this thread from beginning to end for the second time, I'm still reading it again because it contains too much information to download in just one read, i guess the OP and most of the early contributors have deviated into other means, hence the thread have gone silent.
Those of us here who are still into ugu farming or are about to start can connect better in a whatsapp group and share ideas if we don't mind, I'm presently preparing my land for the dry season ugu farming, Below are some of the procedures i plan to follow
1. Plant 4,000 ugu seeds in 2 and half plot of land (more than half of the land already cleared), Land location is Ikorodu Lagos 2. grow the seeds using nursery bags and later transplant (though i may do some direct planting because i presently have only about 1450 nursery bags and i don't know if i'll have enough funds to buy more, i thing seeds stand a better chance at germinating after drying if they are planted using nursery bags, because the last time i planted 64 seeds on nursery bags 61 germinated, which is about 95%, it will also save the stress off non uniformity or having to replace the stands that refuse to germinate as with direct planting 3. I intend to use both organic manure and inorganic fertilizer (getting manure seem not to be very convenient in my area, the only close location i got a contact of someone who could provide dry poultry manure said a bag is N1,500, i think that is too expensive, but i'll have to buy a few 4. i still have issues getting fertilizers, it seems allot of dealers don't sell 1 or 2 bags(that's what i'm made to understand for now) the only contact i've gotten is at ibadan, but I'll go for that if i have no other option, man must farm!
This is all i've got for now, I'll be posting pictures when i start.
Cheers farmers! |

Josefoyeniyi: *STAKING OF PLANT* One way to improve yield when cultivating vegetables is staking plants. Vegetables benefit a lot from staking and they also grow well. The process can be a little bit tedious but the end result is encouraging. You will see your crops blossoming and producing healthy fruits throughout the growing season. You can improvise and use any type of material you want. The most important thing is that the stakes should be sturdy and driven well into the ground so that they can support the weight of the fruiting plants. At least a foot or more of the stakes can be driven into the ground. Ensure that the support is strong enough to bear the weight of the fruit and can also withstand heavy winds or rain. There are lots of benefits of staking climbers. A little understanding of these benefits will encourage every gardener to consider the system instead of allowing crops to run on the ground. *Benefit of Staking* *1. Increase in yield* The most important reason for staking crops is to increase yield. Studies carried out in different locations shows that growing crops vertically increases yield three times than when they are allowed to run on the ground. *2. Maintain fruit quality* A healthy fruit without blemishes attracts better price. That’s why gardeners will do anything to prevent their fruits from damages. Damages can occur when fruits are allowed to run on the ground. They are exposed to insect attacks and other creeping things. *3. Disease-free plants* Every gardener wish is to make sure their plants are free from diseases. This can be achieved by staking crops rather than allowing them to run on the ground. They can easily contract diseases when allowed to remain and run on the ground. But when they are raised up with stakes, they experience better air circulation which reduces the incidence and spread of diseases. *4. Exposure to sunlight* Crops like tomatoes need as much sun as they can possibly get during the day. And for such crops, staking exposes a greater part of the leaves’ surface to sunlight which they need to generate energy and grow well. *5.Cultivate more crops in limited space* There is no point looking for an extra piece of land to add to the one you have when you can simply double your yield. Staking allows you to utilize limited space well. There are many reasons to use stakes to grow plants. It makes harvesting, spraying, fertilizer application and watering easier. You can explore the various methods used in staking plants. You can also get creative but make sure the stakes are sturdy enough to support the weight of the fruits as they grow bigger in size. Please where can I get the white type of staking ropes in Lagos? I was made to understand it is sold in bags, how much will a bag cost? |

Please keep the updates coming as it grows so that those of us learning here will be motivated. Cheers griinfarms: UPDATE : This is the Ugu i planted at home in almost-purely sharp sand. Its now 2weeks old. When it germinated, i mistakenly cut of the leaves springing up as i was trying to dig out stones from the ground around it. After a few days, i noticed it grew new leaves from two new sets of shoots. From the first picture i just uploaded, you can see the cut-off shoot as well as the new ones. Amazing.

Thanks for your response, i will be buying habanero pepper (avenir f1) and the okro i think i will be opting for kirikou f1 variety) i pray we succeed. griinfarms: I got the Habanero pepper. As for the okra am not too sure till it produces but am guessing it's the star-of-david or eagle-pass variety. Fingers crossed there. I planted directly on the beds with a 6 inch spacing. I actually did alternate the okra and pepper on each bed with same space. Reason is i did a small research online and found out the peppers help repel the pest that normally would infest the okras. I don't know how effective the pepper would be in "guarding" the Ugu though so i hope to transplant any overcrowded pepper onto some ugu beds to experiment later on. I plan to keep the farm purely organic but i would be using neem oil later on for the ugu plants. I haven't used any manure yet till about the 3rd week. Wish you luck on your farm. Let's do this! |

Thanks once again, God bless you for taking it upon yourself to dish out such valuable information. I don't know why i can't send you my own message on NL Please this is my whatsapp number and email address: 08139293592 austinomd@gmail.com, just send me a hi with your whatsapp number so that i can save it and communicate with you better. Seems you have allot of knowledge of chemistry, physics and mathematics, well that is gold lol i can also balance chemical equations and whatever arithmetic required in farming, i just have to stop being lazy now and i'm good to go. Thanks allot for your time. Pistotita: I have replied your email. I will send you a procedure you should follow. I don't charge for such service. I used to take a token in the past, but I have stopped it. However, you will need to buy materials like seeds, chemicals or organic stuff. I will also give you some contacts so you deal with them directly. Mine is to see you excel in your new passion. However, the greater % of all rests on your shoulder.
Managing vegetables is real science to me..For example, someone contacted me yesterday and asked me cocoa Fertilization procedure. I checked my archive and saw a 12 year chat of all major nutrients for cocoa, and sent it to him. That is the answer. But interpretation is the challenge. And he said he wants to do it himself. as he can research it. Waooo, I simply replied him that he need to understand the basis of chemistry like molar mass calculation so as to be able to formulate mixtures of fertilizers. lol. I guess it was a bit confusing for him. And since then, I have not heard from him. lol. The other option is just pay someone to do it for him. lol.
Well, I will do my best but the truth is that if you are reading secrets from professionals, they can just tell you only Nitrogen requirements for the crop. But if you understand nutritional management, you will formulate others. They can say 2nd week, give your crop 1kg Nitrogen. Lol. You must be able to know how many kg NPK or Urea is needed to supply 1kg of Nitrogen. The total weight of 1kg Nitrogen in Urea, NPK 20 10 10, NPK 15 15 15, NPK 20 20 20, all differ. Most will not tell you to use 3 teaspoon of NPK bla.bla bla. lol. So, how do you interpreted such? If you are the type who is good with arithmetic, you can work with me easily. Well, if I see that you are not good in it, I will give you the formulation, but believe me, you have limited yourself. In this Agric I have applied thermodynamics, Newtons law, Kirchorv's law, Sperposition theorem, Forces, Quadratic and Simultaneous equations, vectors analysis, even applied mathematics, etc..I have balanced chemical equations like I used to in high school...lol. And guess what, I always start with book keeping, accounting and marketing. Cos marketing moves sales. A farmer without marketing and accounting skill is limited. But you don't need details of them all, you just need ideas. And you are good to go so bro, I use science. If you think you are up to it, then, you can reach advance stage with me. Otherwise, I will just give you protocols and you keep using them. If you can follow routines, them you are good to go too.
There is an Israeli named George who works with Hazera. The guy is with over 35 years experience. George is a master of vegetable farming. Infact, when he talks about Shanty, you just wanna use that variety. I will send you some of his answers to my questions, and other answers he gave some other people. You must be able to interpret them. I am saying this cos you mentioned that I used technical terms Well, you need to know them sir so that I can give you accurate information without any distortion.
Bless you sir! |

Most importantly, read about the crops you are interested in first. I did not go under any supervision of anyone before I got started. The approach I used was "German German" like we call it. lol.
