Politics / Ambode’s Road & Transport Legacy Being Destroyed Even Before His Exit by autojosh: 1:47pm On Apr 15, 2019
Governor Akinwumi Ambode is in the twilight of his stint as the Governor of Lagos state.

Unarguably, as he makes his exit, he would be leaving behind not a few legacies.

Most of those legacies are evident in the road and transportation sector.

For instance, the Ambode administration introduced laybys, slip roads, etc on traffic-prone roads in the state. This has significantly aided in the free-flow of vehicular traffic in the state.

Also, he built 2 flyover bridges. The construction of another one – the third - is still ongoing.

Ambode also built not a few pedestrian bridges across the state. The resurrection of the Inland waterways mode of transport in Lagos state has reached an advanced stage, thanks to the Ambode-led government. Over 150 roads were reconstructed under his watch, etc.

However, one innovative solution to a long term challenge on roads in the state was introduced by the Ambode administration.

It is the installation of median wire-mesh fences along expressways in Lagos state.

Soon after his election as the governor of Lagos state, Gov. Ambode approved the installation of Wire-mesh fencing on medians on major expressways around Lagos state.

Installing Wire-mesh Fencing became necessary in order to ensure safety and orderliness on the expressways.

With these Wire-mesh fences, hawkers no longer have a field day on Lagos highway just as pedestrians do not cross the highway indiscriminately like before.

Instead, pedestrians are left with no choice than to use pedestrian bridges, walkways or other designated places.

Also, with the fences, pickpockets, robbers and other criminals who emerge from nowhere and snatch valuables from unsuspecting pedestrians and motorists before disappearing into their hideouts have also being prevented from operating easily.

Many agree that the presence of the median fences contributed to the remarkable free-flow of traffic on major highways in Lagos.

These constructions have also enabled the government to save the cost of enforcing environmental laws in the state.

Sadly, these fences are – one of Ambode’s legacies in the road transport sector – is already being destroyed. And this is happening even before his exit as a single term governor of the state.

The massive vandalization of these fences is easily noticed at locations like Ojota, Ketu, Obanikoro, Onipanu, Fadeyi, Barracks bus stop, etc.

These median fences, which were designed to be easily fixed or replaced if any segment is damaged, is being left to further deteriorate.

As these Wire-mesh Fencing gets vandalized, insanity is fast returning to most expressways in Lagos state.

As a result, pedestrians now avail themselves of the cutouts on these fences to cross busy expressways, in the process endangering their lives, and also impeding the free flow of traffic.

Also, hawkers and miscreants are taking advantage of the opportunity presented by the vandalized fences to stage a come-back to some of these expressways.

Sadly, LAMATA – the agency whose purview it is to maintain these road infrastructures – appears to be unconcerned about the speedy degradation of the median fences on the expressway.

With the incoming of Babajide Sanwo-Olu, it is expected that this particular legacy of Governor Ambode will be preserved and kept well-maintained.

Politics / Finally, The Political Campaign Posters Are Disappearing (PHOTOS) by autojosh: 1:08pm On Apr 15, 2019

On account of the last general elections, the streets and roads in Lagos became one very hideous sight. Well, it still is.

This was due to the indiscriminate pasting of posters on any visible street surface by politicians.

Road medians, bus stop shelters, street walls, junctions, etc., were literally littered with different political campaign posters. Each one attempts to outdo each other for visibility.

The offense of posting posters on street surfaces contravened Section 168 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 (Revised). The section prescribes a six months imprisonment or a fine of N90, 000 for offenders.

The enforcement of this law is the function of the Lagos State Signage and Advertisement Agency (LASAA).

LASAA spends millions of naira on advocacy meant to dissuade residents from posting posters indiscriminately.

Apparently, our politicians are above that law.

However, the street is being rid of the vastly unpleasant sights of political campaign posters that have overwhelmed the state for months prior to the general elections.

LASAA has been going around some locations where the surfaces have been overwhelmed with posters to remove them.

However, despite the removal, the surfaces still have evidence of leftovers of the posters. This has left the surfaces still looking defaced.

See photos of the surfaces below.

Sports / Private Jets: Neymar Vs. Ronaldo Vs. Messi by autojosh: 12:19pm On Mar 25, 2019
Arguably, they are three of the greatest footballers ever!

Their sublime football skills have earned for them not a small measure of fame and fortune.

They currently play for the world’s top football clubs in major leagues.

Global brands fall over each other in order to get their signature on staggering endorsement contracts.

Their presence and attention are so much in high demand all around the world.

To ensure comfortable travels around the world in order to attend to their families, businesses, holidays, tours, etc, these highly-moneyed footballers acquired for themselves luxury private aircraft to match up with their deluxe lifestyle.

Autojosh presents the Private Jets of Star Footballers: Neymar, Cristiano Ronaldo, and Lionel Messi.

Neymar

Neymar da Silva Santos Júnior or simply “Neymar” or “Neymar Jr.”, is one footballer that is never afraid to spend what he earns.

In 2012, Forbes magazine reported that the Neymar was spending his way to bankruptcy” due to “irresponsible” spending habits.

Well, thus far, time appears to have proved Forbes wrong.

Neymar owns an Embraer Phenom 100 jet. The aircraft bears his initials “NRJ”. Built in 2011, and with a serial number of 203, this aircraft has a price of approximately US$ 4 million.

He also owns another jet, a Cessna Citation 680. This jet was built in 2008 and has a price of around US$ 5 million. This jet is registered to Neymar Sports and Marketing.

Neymar also owns a helicopter – a Eurocopter EC130B4. Neymar bought the helicopter in 2013. The helicopter has Neymar’s initials NJR on its tail. A Eurocopter EC130 has a price of US$ 4 million.

The Brazilian professional footballer currently plays for French club Paris Saint-Germain.

Cristiano Ronaldo

Cristiano Ronaldo is a beast on the football field.

The extra-hardworking Portuguese professional footballer is currently regarded as one of the best footballers ever.

He currently plays for the Italian football team, Juventus FC.

Ronaldo’s owns an 18-seater Gulfstream G650. The aircraft is valued at €19 million.

The superstar footballer uses it to fly around the world on his marketing missions. When the plane is not in use by him, he rents it out at a cost of 6,000 euros an hour to recoup some of the cost.

The aircraft features separate bathrooms for the crew and passengers, wardrobes, internet access, telephone, fax, microwave, electric oven, fridge for drinks, and entertainment systems.

Messi

Unarguably, Lionel Messi is one of the greatest football stars ever.

And as such, the 32-year-old Argentine deserves to travel in grand style wherever he goes.

The Barcelona FC player flies around in a brand new customized business-class private jet (Embraer Legacy 650).

The Private jet is worth $15million.

The aircraft is not owned by Messi. It was leased to him by an Argentine company to enable him to travel around the world with his family and friends in luxury.

In a smart business venture, the company in return hopes to attract wealthy renters who are interested in traveling in the same plane that carried one of the world’s greatest footballers.

The craft, which adorns the No 10, offers luxury and comfort and it comes complete with a few personal touches.

The aircraft is a 16 seater. The seats can be folded to make eight beds.

It also features a kitchen and two bathrooms.

On the exterior, it has been branded with his signature number 10 on the tail, so anyone who sees it will know the Argentina icon has landed.

It even has the names of the Argentina icon, his wife, Antonella, and their three children, Thiago, Ciro and Mateo, written on the steps.

Car Talk / How To Get Home Safely After Drinking by autojosh: 1:16pm On Mar 18, 2019
Each year, thousands of car accidents involving drunk drivers are recorded.

In 2007 alone, about 13,000 careless deaths from fatal car accidents involving drunk drivers were recorded.

This makes drunk driving one of the top causes of automobile accidents.

Alcohol and other drugs slow your reflexes, reduce coordination and increase risk-taking behaviour, etc. Each of these makes a car-crash more likely.

Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights account for more than one-third of fatal drink driving car accidents. And they usually happen between the hours of 9 pm and 3 am.

Within that social period, chances of an alcohol-related auto crash are much higher than any other time of the week.

After a drinking spree, or an indulgence in recreational drugs, how does one prevent an auto-mishap?

Autojosh.com highlights some strategies that one can apply in order to arrive home safe and avoid alcohol-related car accidents.

1. Leave your car at home

Take a mode of public transport to the venue of the happy hour. Leaving your car behind is a guarantee that you will not be in a car crash. Well, that is except you did not opt for an equally inebriated driver to take you home.

2. Walk home

If your home is within a walkable distance, then walk home. One benefit of this is that, walking tends to help wear out the alcohol in your system. However, be wary of some risk that comes with a drunk pedestrian.

Walking home with a friend or two is also a great idea. Besides, it is a way to get some exercise and possibly sober up a little to reduce the next day headache.

3. Plan ahead

Before heading out for a drinking session, make plans ahead, on how you intend to come back home. Think of safe alternatives to you driving home. Then opt for any of them.

4. Get A Ride-Share App (Uber, Taxify, Oga Taxi, etc)

Use a ride-share app to request a ride to the venue and back. Apart from the convenience, this is a safer option for driving home yourself. Requesting for a ride on any of these platforms minimizes the risk of being taken advantage of, cheated on the fare, or even getting robbed by the driver.

5. Go with a sober driver

If you are sure that you will be too drunk to drive home, then take along a sober driver that will drive you back home.

6. Get a lift with someone who has not been drinking or using drugs

Ask for a lift from someone at the venue who did not participate in the drinking or indulgence in recreational drugs.

7. Avoid crossing major expressways

Never cross a major expressway, especially the ones that are unsafe or illegal to do so. If there is a pedestrian bridge around you, use it. Take extra caution on roads with a speed limit higher than 30 mph.

8. Leave Your car behind at the bar or drinking venue

If it an unplanned visit to a bar, lounge or other drinking places, especially one that you are very familiar with, you can leave your car there, if you feel too tipsy to drive.

9. Wear a Reflective or bright-coloured clothe

If you intend to walk back home, wear a bright-coloured cloth or keep a reflective gear in your bag just in case. This is to minimize getting knocked down by a car that wasn’t able to pick you out on time in the dark.

10. Stay at a friend’s house

If you are feeling to inebriated to drive home, then stay over at a friend’s house that is not too far from the venue of the rendezvous.

These cars cost a fortune to acquire.

Millions of people can only dream of owning them.

But for whatever reasons – their owners left them abandoned.

These luxury automobiles were abandoned for diverse reasons. For instance, some were abandoned for the crime of default on loans. Some were abandoned for technical faults. Some were found abandoned after their owners committed suicide, etc.

For whatever reasons for their abandonment, perhaps, it lends credence to the theory of these luxury automotive toys being objects of vanity.

Autojosh.com present, 10 Most Expensive Cars That Were Found Abandoned.

Shelby Daytona Coupe

There were only six Shelby Daytona Coupes were ever built. One of them was later discovered abandoned. It was later discovered that its owner had committed suicide. All trace of it was lost in the 1970s. It was found in 2001 and auctioned off for $4 million. It is now kept in a museum in Philadelphia.

Koenigsegg Trevita

This Koenigsegg Trevita found abandoned in 2012. It was abandoned in Zurich, Switzerland parking garage. It was abandoned in an illegal manner. It thus accumulated parking violation cost of more than 1,000 Swiss francs by the time it was found in 2012.

Bugatti Veyron

The Bugatti Veyron is one of the fastest cars in the world. At $1.5 million, it is also one of the priciest cars in the market. But apparently, cost is not a thing to its Russian owner that left the car abandoned left to gather dust.

Ferrari Enzo

This dusty Ferrari Enzo was found abandoned. It was abandoned after its British owner allegedly fled after failing to pony up for a series of traffic fines. The police then seized the car. After a flood of reports claiming the Enzo was headed to the auction block, the authorities revealed that along with nine other cars (including a Ferrari 599 and 430 Spider), it is the subject of an Interpol investigation concerning its theft.

LeMans Blue Jaguar XJ220

Only 281 of the LeMans Blue Jaguar XJ220 was manufactured. This particular one was last seen in Beirut where it was purchased. This was 6 years before being found at the edge of a Qatari desert. The price of the car then was around $500,000.

Rolls Royce Phantom “Centurion”

The Centurion, this is a custom-built Rolls Royce Phantom. It was manufactured for a customer that resided in Las Vegas. It was later sold and exported to Russia. The luxury car was later found on the side of a suburban railroad in Russia. An unmodified version of this Rolls Royce costs about $350,000.

Maybach 57

The Maybach 57 costs $380,000 before Daimler discontinued the brand. In 2012, this particular one was found in a parking lot in Cannes, France. It was parked there for about 4 years. Apart from the suspension that weakened, and the hood ornaments that were missing, the car was still functioning.

Ferrari F40

This particular Ferrari F40 belonged to Saddam’s oldest son, Uday Hussein. Uday was known for his love of money, women and super cars. He kept a massive collection of luxury cars.

He purchased the Ferrari F40 sometime during the Gulf War. A Ferrari F40s sold for around $450,000.The car was abandoned in the latter stages of the Iraq war, where he was eventually killed in a shoot-out with American Troops. It can still be found beside a dusty track somewhere in rural Iraq.

Lamborghini Miura

This particular Lamborghini Miura was bought by Greek shipping magnate Aristotle Onassis for Stamatis “Greek Elvis” Kokotas 1969. In 1972, the engine after some rigours caved in. It was left abandoned in the underground parking lot of a Hilton in Athens while the engine was sent to Lamborghini for repairs. Kokotas lost interest, didn’t pay Lambo and the poor Miura was left standing there for 30 years. When the Lambo was put up for auction in 2012, having been reunited with its engine, bidding stalled at $483,210.

Aston Martin DB5

This prototype Aston Martin was found in a decrepit shed after not being driven for about 40 years. The classic car was parked in the woods by its owner in the 1970s and hasn’t been moved since. The Aston Martin DB4 was the first production car capable of doing 0-100-0mph in less than 30 seconds when it was launched in 1958. It was built to compete with sports cars from Ferrari and Maserati – but this particular model has not moved in almost half a century. Despite being partially buried in leaves after languishing in wood for more than 40 years it was auctioned off for $580,000.

It is very common for us to gawk over the expensive and luxury acquisitions of football stars.

However, and unknown to many of us, just like the footballers, football club managers and coaches also enjoy the deluxe lifestyle. Indeed, football coaches, too, love the finer things of life.

For instance, some coaches are known for acquiring for themselves some very exotic and luxurious cars.

One coach who is not shy of showing off some of his expensive toys is the eccentric and flamboyant Jose Mourinho, the former manager of Manchester United.

José Mourinho’s cars collection includes cars like  Aston Martin DB9, Audi A7 and A8, BMW X6, Ferrari 612 Scaglietti, Ferrari F599, Jaguar F-Type R Coupe, Porsche 911 S, etc.

TV/Movies / “mr. Bean”: See The Kind Of Cars That This Funny Man Owns (PHOTOS) by autojosh: 7:30pm On Mar 14, 2019

Rowan Atkinson is an English actor, comedian and screenwriter. He achieved international fame playing the character “Mr. Bean” in comedies.

Mr. Bean is considered as one of the funniest actors in the world.

One of the major fascination and interest of this very successful actor is cars.

The comedian has spent a fortune on a huge vintage and classic car collection fetish that includes Aston Martins, Audi A8, Mercedes-Benz 500E, Bentley Mulsanne, Honda Civic Hybrid, Lancia Delta Integrale, Rolls Royces and McLaren F1.

Atkinson also has a fascination for Lorries. He holds a category C+E (formerly “Class 1”) lorry-driving license, gained in 1981.

His lorry-driving skill particularly came in handy when making movies. For instance, in 1991, he starred in the self-penned “The Driven Man”, a series of sketches featuring Atkinson driving around London trying to solve his obsession with cars and discussing it with taxi drivers, policemen, used-car salesmen, and psychotherapists.

He is also a lover of car racing. He appeared as racing driver Henry Birkin in the television play “Full Throttle” in 1995.

From 1997 to 2015, Atkinson owned a rare McLaren F1. In October 1999, the car was involved in an accident in Cabus, near Garstang, Lancashire, with an Austin Metro.

August 2011, again this same car was damaged in a serious crash and it caught fire after Atkinson reportedly lost control and hit a tree.

That accident caused significant damage to the vehicle, taking over a year to be repaired and leading to the largest insurance payout in Britain, at £910,000.

In July 2001, Atkinson crashed an Aston Martin V8 Zagato at an enthusiasts’ meeting, but walked away unhurt. This was whilst he was competing in the Aston Martin Owners Club event, at the Croft Racing Circuit, Darlington.

Strangely, for an exotic and luxury car collector, Mr. Bean does not own or even like Porsches.

According to him, “I have a problem with Porsches. They’re wonderful cars, but I know I could never live with one. Somehow, the typical Porsche people — and I wish them no ill — are not, I feel, my kind of people.”

“Mr. Bean” is estimated to be worth about 65 million Pounds.

TV/Movies / 10 Most Popular James Bond Cars by autojosh: 7:07pm On Mar 14, 2019

When it comes to movie cars, nobody does it better than James Bond movie franchise.

The debonair Agent 007, in addition to the prettiest women, always gets the sleekest cars that are fitted with the most hi-tech espionage gadgetry.

Long before most features of some of today’s car technology surfaced, James Bond’s cars had them.

The James Bond movie debuted in 1962 with the movie Dr. No. In the movie, he drove the Sunbeam Alpine Series II (1962).

Ever since then, the Bond movie franchise has been the biggest platforms to showcase cars – recent and vintage.

Although, a lot of people associate Aston Martin with James Bond brand, the movie franchise also feature other brands.

For instance, here are some famous cars used by Britain’s biggest movie franchise.

1. Bentley Mark IV Drophead 3.5 Litre (1935)

Bond: Sean Connery
Movie: From Russia With Love (1963).

The 1935 Bentley Mark IV appeared in this second James Bond movie ever made.
At the time, it was considered a classic, since it was made 30 years before the movie was made. It was important for the producers to include a Bentley in the film because, in many of the Ian Fleming novels, Bond drives a Bentley 4.5 liter.

2. Aston Martin DB5 (1963)

Bond: Sean Connery, Pierce Brosnan, Daniel Craig

The 1963 DB5 was the first Aston Martin to make an appearance in a James Bond film.

Movie: Goldfinger(1964), Thunderball (1965), Goldeneye(1995), Tomorrow Never Dies(1997), Casino Royale(2006) and Skyfall(2012).

Aston Martin and James Bond became an on-screen iconic relationship.

3. Ford Mustang Mach 1 (1971)

Bond: Sean Connery
Movies: Diamonds are Forever (1971)

Due to the rise in the sale from other car companies, Ford pushed for its Mustang Mach 1 to be the car that James Bond was driving. They wanted a piece of the action. However, technically the car was not Bond’s in the movie, it was Tiffany Case’s. James just borrowed it.

4. Lotus Esprit S1 (1976)

Bond: Roger Moore
Movie: The Spy Who Loved Me (1977)

This car ranks as one of the coolest James Bond cars ever. At the time the movie was produced, this car was way ahead of its time. The car could travel in the air, on the ground or as a submarine. The submarine version of the Lotus Esprit S1 actually existed. The movie producers had a fully functional, real submarine built from the Lotus body shell made just for this film.

5. Rolls Royce Silver Cloud II (1962)

Bond: Roger Moore
Movie: A View to Kill (1985)

This movie was Roger Moore’s final 007 film. The Silver Cloud II in this film was actually owned by the producer of the James Bond franchise, Cubby Broccoli. This car also had a brief cameo in the 1965 Bond film, Thunderball.

6. Aston Martin V8 Vantage Volante (1985)

Bond: Timothy Dalton
Movie: The Living Daylights (1987)
After about 18 years hiatus from a James Bond movie, Aston Martin made a come back with V8 Volante.

7. BMW Z8 (1999)

Bond: Pierce Brosnan
Movie: The World is not Enough (1999)

This ultra-sleek James Bond automobile was equipped with surface-to-air missile launchers. Painfully, in the movie, a helicopter with a metal cutting gadget cut it in half.

8. Ford Fairlane (1957)

Bond: Pierce Brosnan
Movie: In Die Another Day (2002)

This car makes a brief appearance in the movie. It featured only for transportation purpose as opposed to combat.

9. Aston Martin DBS V12 (2006)

Bond: Daniel Craig
Movie: Casino Royale (2006), Quantum of Solace (2008).

10. Aston Martin DB10 (2015)

Bond: Daniel Craig
Movie: Spectre (2015)
This movie was the 24th James Bond film. The Aston Martin DB10 was unveiled in December 2014 as the official James Bond car. That year marked the 50-year partnership between Aston Martin and the James Bond Franchise. This is James Bond’s 6th Aston Martin.

Car Talk / 10 Essential Safety Tips For When Driving In The Rain by autojosh: 12:18pm On Mar 07, 2019
Earlier in the year  -   January 2019 to be specific - the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), announced that the country will experience what it described as ‘below normal-to-normal’ rainfall season.

The agency, in its public presentation of the 2019 Seasonal Rainfall Prediction (SRP), also predicted that the rain would start late, especially in the Northern parts of the country, while the south-eastern zone, as well as the coastal areas, will experience a normal onset of the rains.

Not quite long after the announcement was made, some part of the country witnesses its first rainfall. This was seen as a bit of contrast to the prediction of NiMet.

While this is not an attempt to disparage the prediction of NiMet, perhaps, it would be wise that we prepare ourselves for whatever nature throws at us.

For the motorists, Autojosh has highlighted 10 important tips on how to cope with the rains and to avoid dangers caused by rainfalls and floods while driving.

Reduce your speed

Drive at or below the speed limit. Drive at a speed that does not endanger you and other motorists. Make your speed be just enough for you to see far in front of you and to enable you to make a quick driving decision.

Turn on your headlights

Turning on your headlights in the rain helps with visibility. It makes it easier for you to see things ahead of you. It also makes other motorists to see you. This way, accidents can be avoided.  So, no matter what time, whether its daytime or nighttime, always have your headlight on when you are driving in the rain.

Avoid flooded roads

Never drive through heavily flowing or stagnant pool of water on the road. Find a way to gauge the depth of the pool of water.  For instance, you can determine the depth of the water by watching other drivers who are more familiar with the terrain to drive through it first. Then you can follow. Still, be careful because flooding the engine of your car can cause the engine to stall, and deep water can actually float your car and take it off the road.

Be careful, brakes can be affected by water

Under rainy or very wet conditions, your brake might not function as effectively as it used to. In addition, water can reduce the friction between the ground and your tyres. In other words, brakes are not too reliable under these conditions.

Turn on the defroster if the windscreen begins to fog

A car’s windscreen generally forms fog on its surface if the air in the car is warmer than the windscreen. When the warm air hits the cold windshield, the water vapor starts to turn to liquid, leaving a wet fog on your windshield. When this happens, turn on the defroster in your car. Defrosters in your vehicle blow warm dry air to clear the fog formed on your windscreen.

Avoid pools of water

Look out for pools of water. Some of them might be potholes filled with floodwater. So slow down when you encounter one, then careful drive into it if it cannot be avoided.

Always keep your two hands on the steering wheel

While you are driving in the rains, ensure to keep your hands on the steering wheels at all times.

Avoid distractions coming from your audio system, phone calls, etc. Focus on the road ahead of you. Use your mirrors (Back View Mirror, Right-Hand side & Left-Hand side). This is necessary to check out for unusual sources of danger such as falling electric poles, trees, etc.

Use Your hazard lights

If the water somehow affects your car, and there seem to be a driving problem, turn on your hazard light - or as we call them in Nigeria, double indicator. This will hint other motorists to be cautious.

Maintain a Safe Distance Between your car and the Car ahead of you

Under rainy conditions, the roads become slippery. Brakes may not effectively function in grinding a car to a sudden halt. Therefore, when the car ahead of you instantly halts, applying your break in order to avoid a collison with the car might not provide the anticipated result. It is therefore wise to keep a good distance between you and the car ahead of you.

Be careful, hydroplaning may occur

Hydroplaning is that situation where a car drives into the water and at some point experience little or no contact with the ground. In order to get out of a hydroplaning situation let off the gas and steer straight or slightly in the direction, you must go. Do not make sudden motions and remain calm.
