Car Talk / For Not Getting A Particular Customized Number Plate, See What This Canadian Did by autojosh: 12:35pm On Feb 18, 2019
A Canadian recently became famous  for his resolve not to give up on what he wants.

The man applied to the Canadian authorities to get a customized number plate (vanity plate).

However, his request was turned down. This was because the word he applied to have on the number plate was considered unacceptable.

The word “Assman”,  was considered by the authorities as profanity.

Actually, the word “ Assman” is the man’s surname. His full name  happens to be David Assman (pronounced “Oss-men”).

So, undeterred, the David Assman decided to get even by getting creative.

Assman took things into his own hands and designed a huge ‘Assman’ decal that now sits on the tailgate of his pickup truck.

Also, to mimic the look of local license plates, David also got decals that read ‘Saskatchewan’ and ‘Land of the Living Skies’ as well as small stickers that look like the bolts found on real license plates.

In Saskatchewan province of Canada,  Government Insurance rejects vanity plates with even subtle hints at drugs, politics, religion, and sexuality. The insurance have a list of rejected vanity plates that is 85 pages long.

Not only has Assman’s original Facebook post of the sticker been shared more than 5,000 times, it’s also put big smiles on the faces of many people.

Regularly publishing photos of themselves on social media has become a common practice by Nigerian celebs.

This habit helps to promote  direct communications between them and their fans (or haters).

Posting photos also helps the celeb to showcase and update their fans on their private lives, latest acquisitions, projects, etc.

These posted photos also helps them to be regularly in the news for either good or bad reasons -  anything just to remain relevant.

Interestingly, it is becoming customary for Nigerian celebs to post photos of themselves that also features at least an automobile.

If it is an exterior photo shoot,  then at least a car has to be in the background. Of course, for many of them, it is a convenient method of  flaunting some of their  expensive toys.

Politics / Do Not Use Your Car On Election Day – IGP by autojosh: 11:01am On Feb 15, 2019

There will be a restriction of vehicular movement tomorrow – the election day.

This is according to the Inspector General of Police.

According to him, “this is as part of efforts in furtherance of the overall interest of public order, public wellbeing and safety and national security as it relates to the general elections billed to take place on Saturday, February 16th, 2019”.

To that effect, the Inspector General of Police, Adamu Mohammed, has ordered the restriction of vehicular movement from 6am – 6pm on Saturday, 16th February, 2019.

The IGP urged the citizens to troupe out en-masse on the day of the election to exercise their franchise without any fear or apprehension as the Police and other security agencies have already put in place adequate security measures to ensure a safe, secure and conducive environment for a peaceful and credible election.

The IGP notes that the restriction will assist the security agencies in effectively policing the electoral process, thereby preventing hoodlums and criminally-minded elements from hijacking and disrupting the electoral process.

While regretting the inconveniences the restriction will cause the citizens, the IGP however warns that the Force will deal decisively with any individual(s) or group(s) that will want to test our common will in our resolve to ensure a peaceful election. He therefore enjoins the citizens to steer-clear of vote buying, vote selling, hate speeches, circulating fake news, snatching of ballot boxes and other act(s) capable of truncating the people’s will noting that the Force will not hesitate to bring to bear the full weight of the law on anyone who engages in any crime during this period.

Travel / The New Berger Bus-stop, Lagos Is Fast Degrading (PHOTOS) by autojosh: 12:52pm On Feb 05, 2019

On May 16, 2017 , the new Berger Bus-stop was commissioned by the Akinwunmi Ambode administration.

The Berger-bus stop is located on the fringes of Lagos state that borders with Ogun state.

This key transport hub and interchange features an extensive pedestrians bridge, lay-bys, slip roads, public conveniences, etc.

The reconstructed/remodeled Berger bus stop gave the location a modern and coordinated ambiance.

Today, sadly, Berger bus-stop is fast slipping back into its former chaotic and dirty outlook.

Indeed, the new Berger Bus stop is fast degrading.

The place screams a lack of maintenance. The paint job is fast fading away, there are litters all over the interlocked tiles, hawkers have indiscriminately taken their enterprise all over the place, touts (agberos) activities further heightens the chaotic state of the place, etc.

Indeed, this further lends credence to the belief that maintenance culture in Nigeria is a big problem – especially with regards to public facility management.

Crime / Is It Ethical For A Police Or Army Personnel To Drive A Commercial Vehicle? by autojosh: 2:47pm On Jan 23, 2019

In Nigeria, it is not uncommon to see commercial vehicles being driven by a policeman or a member of the armed forces.

Typically, they do not drive the commercial vehicles with their uniforms on.

However, their berets, belts or any piece of their uniform displayed somewhere in the vehicles are used to identify them. Some of them even display horsewhips.

Ostensibly, the display of these items are necessary to dispel interrogations from traffic law enforcers, or touts operating as the road transport union representatives.

Indeed, vehicles with some of these police or army emblems or kits typically escape scrutiny by the law enforcement agencies. This practice has security implication, as it can be used by criminals to evade arrest - a topic for another day.

Now, the question to ask bothers on how this practice is an acceptable professional practice by these uniformed men.

According to the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria a serving civil servant cannot undertake in any enterprise outside his/her principal occupation.

This is contained in Part I, Fifth Schedule, Section of 2 (b) of the 1999 Constitution.

It states, ““without prejudice to the generality of the foregoing paragraph, a public officer shall not, except where he is not employed on full-time basis engage or participate in the management or running of any private business, profession or trade, but nothing in this sub-paragraph shall prevent a public officer from engaging in farming.”

In other words, failure to comply with this directive by civil servants would not only be regarded as an unconstitutional act, but also an act of misconduct under the Public Service Rules.

Granted, we understand the need to earn extra income. However,  do you think it is Ok for members of the police or the armed forces to drive commercial vehicles - since it is clearly unconstitutional and against the Public Service Rule?

Car Talk / 6 Strong Reasons Why You Should Consider Buying A Dashboard Camera by autojosh: 12:34pm On Jan 22, 2019
The dashboard camera, or “Dash Cam“, is a type of camera that is mounted on the dashboard of your car. It is designed to record sounds and images while you are driving.

The Dash Cam has become increasingly popular over the past few years mainly because of its numerous benefits.

The purpose of the dash cam is to carefully record every detail that takes place both on the road and inside the car, and it can be used for a variety of purposes.

A dashboard camera has a straightforward design that typically consists of a microphone and a fixed-lens digital camera. These simple cameras can be installed on the dashboard or the windshield of your car within seconds, thanks to their suction cup.

There are simple models that are battery powered or plug into your vehicle’s cigarette lighter. With these models, you simply need to fix the camera to your dashboard or windshield. Other models are hardwired into your car’s battery system.

The Dashboard Camera has some benefits. Here are some reasons why you should have on installed in your car.

It Provides Video Evidence During A Car Accident

The camera will start recording as soon as you start your car’s engine. From then on, it starts providing real-time, efficient, straight-to-the-point proof in case of accident.

With a dash cam, in the event of a car crash, you can prove that it was not your fault. This is the primary reason why car drivers acquire it.

The video recording can be tendered as evidence if the case goes to court.

It Can Be Used To Monitor The Driving Activities Of Hired Drivers

Installing a dashboard camera on a vehicle can help you do an audit of the driving activities of your driver when you are not with him.

Going through the recording of his driving activities can help you with decisions on whether to retain his services or not.

Cab Drivers or Ride-Share Service Providers Need It For Defense Against Allegations

Cab drivers or ride-share providers (Uber, Taxify, etc ) need dashboard cameras in order to have video evidence in the event of allegation on them by their patrons.

The dashboard camera is the strongest and most efficient proof you have for defending yourself in the event of an allegation.

They Provide Evidence When Wrongful Arrested By Traffic Law Enforcers

Sometimes, there are wrong calls by traffic law enforcers. If you are wrongfully pulled over and arrested over a traffic-related offence — and you have a dashboard camera installed in your car—you may be able to prove your innocence.

It Could Record Vandalism And Help With The Investigation

If your neighborhood or place of work has a high rate of vandalism or car break-ins, this type of camera could help you catch the offender, or even deter them from committing the crime in the first place.

This dash cam that are suited for this scenario are the models that have motion sensor. This ,makes them turn on the camera begin recording come with a even when you’re not in your vehicle. While they cost more, these devices can then upload the video feed to your computer or mobile device, so you can know if someone attempts a smash and grab.

They Can be Used to Monitor who had Driven Your Car

Knowing who have driven your car can be achieved with a Dash cam. Recordings of movement of your car could be achieved if you have a dashboard camera, especially the models that are hardwired into your car’s battery system.

Car Talk / Ford Is Planning To Produce An Electric Version Of The F-150 SUV by autojosh: 11:47am On Jan 18, 2019

The automotive industry is going electric, as the trend is for automakers to shift from fossil-based fuel to electric powered vehicles.

Ford has confirmed it will be following in that trend.

The US automaker has confirmed plans to make the electric variant of its F-150 brand.

Ford reiterated this plan recently during an automotive conference – the Deutsche Bank Global Automotive Conference.

This news is very important because the Ford F-150 has been America’s best-selling vehicle for years. Last year alone, the Ford sold over 909,000 F-Series trucks in the United States.

The company has already confirmed the redesigned truck will be offered with a hybrid powertrain and noted 90% of the manufacturing equipment used to make the current F-150, can be reused for the next-generation model. It remains unclear if the electric variant will be based on the next-generation F-150, but it seems likely.

Ford has released no word on when the electric F-150 will arrive.

Travel / #10 Years Challenge: The Benin-ore Expressway by autojosh: 11:01am On Jan 16, 2019
The Benin-Ore expressway is one of Nigeria’s most traveled roads. Daily, hundreds of thousands of Nigerians ply this economically crucial highway.

This highway primarily connects states of the South-West to states in the South-South, South-East and the Middle belt.

For decades, this stretch of road that is part of the Lagos-Benin Expressway was notorious for its atrocious condition and the neglect by successive Governments.

Sometime in 2007, on account of the disgraceful condition of this Federal road, a one-time Minister of Transportation famously wept during a visit to a failed section of the road. The Minister also apologized to Nigerians for what she then described as the “inhuman and unacceptable” state of the road.

Thankfully, intervention eventually surfaced.

In 2014, the reconstruction of the Benin-Ore section of the Lagos-Benin Expressway was completed.

See the before (2009) and after (2019) photos of the Benin-Ore Expressway.

Politics / Ambode: See Some Legacies In The Transport Sector That He Will Be Remembered For by autojosh: 1:45pm On Jan 15, 2019

Governor Akinwunmi Ambode is in the twilight of his stint as the Governor of Lagos state.

Mixed opinions have been expressed about his performance as the administrator of Nigeria’s seat of commerce.

Interestingly, he has been recognized consistently as Nigeria’s Best-Performing governor. However, all that would change dramatically when it became public knowledge that he had fallen out of favour with the supreme authorities in Lagos state.

Today, Governor Ambode is exiting the reins of authority in Lagos, not necessarily for his lack of performance – but primarily for his sin of not “being a party man”.

See also Key Transport Policies That Possibly Affected Ambode’s Re-Election Bid

Today, instead of bowing out in a blaze of glory, he is exiting the state as a subject of scorn.

Indeed, like every public administrator, he failed in some areas. However, and unarguably, he scored high in certain areas especially in the transport sector.

Autojosh highlights some projects in the transport sector that Governor Akinwunmi Ambode would be remembered for in Lagos state.

The restriction of the FRSC and VIO From Lagos State Roads

In May 2017, Akinwunmi Ambode ordered the Vehicle Inspection Officers (VIO) to stay permanently off Lagos state-owned roads . The Governor also instructed the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) to limit its operations to the fringes and highways and stay clear from the main streets of the State.

The governor gave the order due to widespread public complaints about the high-handedness and over-zealousness of some VIOs and FRSC officials.

Second Ojota Pedestrian Bridge

In March 2017, Governor Akinwunmi Ambode commissioned the second pedestrian Bridge at Ojota, in Kosofe Local Government area of Lagos state.

The second bridge became pertinent following the construction of the barricade of the median around Ojota which puts enormous pressure on the old bridge. The bridge was constructed with a combination of steel and concrete.

Cleanup Of Illegal Motor Parks Under Bridges

In September 2017, the Ambode-led government announced the commencement of the clamp down on illegal bus and cab parks under bridges in the state. The initial places to be affected included the Ojuelegba and Ikeja Bridges.

According the government, “activities of these illegal motor parks are contributing to the traffic gridlock across the state. “No responsible and responsive government will tolerate criminal activities being carried out by hoodlums and miscreants around these illegal parks.

TBS Bus Terminal

One of the first major transport infrastructure to be constructed by the Ambode administration is the imposing Tafewa Balewa Square (TBS) bus terminal at Onikan, Lagos Island.

The TBS bus terminal is a clear mix of elegance and functionality.

The Bus terminal features a very sophisticated sitting arena, dedicated driveways, ticketing booths for various destinations, CCTV coverage, Taxi Park, large screen display, covered stands, terminal offices, etc.

Ikeja Bus Terminal

Perhaps one of Ambode’s most notable achievement is the construction of the ultra-modern Ikeja Bus terminal. The beautiful facility was designed to be part of the infrastructures for the Lagos Bus Reforms Project.

The bus terminus will serve as the hub of all transport activities within the Ikeja Zone. It was designed to serve over 50,000 passengers daily and providing access to many destinations including Ojota, Oshodi, Maryland, Obalende, Agege, Ogba, CMS, Iyana-Ipaja, etc.

The Ikeja Bus Terminal features facilities befitting of a modern bus terminus. These facilities include Waiting Areas, Ticketing Booth, Loading Bays, Information Centre, Food Court, Taxi Rank, Passenger Convenience, Operations Control Centre and an ATM Gallery amongst many others.

The Ikeja Bus Terminal is currently being remodeled to integrate more functionalities.

Oshodi Transport Interchange

For decades, Oshodi had the reputation as a filthy, noisy and crime-prone part of Lagos state.

Today, Oshodi is being rebranded by Governor Ambode administration. The aim is to give it an ultra-modern outlook. The project involves the construction of a Transport Interchange. The Interchange will aggregate all 13 city and interstate motor parks in Oshodi into 3 multi-storey bus terminals.

The three floor terminals, which will be 30, 000 square metres for each terminal, will take care of the parking and passenger demand.

The terminals would have standard facilities including waiting area, loading bays, ticketing stands, driver lounge, parking areas, rest rooms, etc.

It would also come with accessible walkways and pedestrian bridges and a state-of-the-art sky-walk to link all the three terminals, introduction of bus lanes, lay-bys, introduction of green parks to soften the environment and proper waste management strategy, fencing, street lighting and a dedicated security team for Oshodi including surveillance tower, CCTVs, etc.

Ajah (Jubilee) Flyover

In May 2017, Governor Ambode administration constructed and commissioned the Ajah flyover bridge. The bridge christened “Jubilee Flyover” represents a creative solution by his administration to address the perennial traffic associated with the areas, as well as boost economic activities in both axes.

The Jubilee flyover bridge is intended to eliminate the traffic jam usually experienced on the Lekki-Epe expressway, while the Freedom and Admiralty roads, which he also commissioned, would provide an alternative route to the Lekki/Ikoyi Bridge, thereby, easing traffic at Lekki Phase 1.

Berger Bus-stop & Pedestrian Bridge

Prior to the Ambode administration, Berger Bus stop was notorious for its severe state of chaos and disorganization. But this changed when Governor Ambode rehabilitated the popular bus-stop and constructed a resplendent pedestrian bridge across that axis of Lagos-Ibadan expressway.

Several lay-bys and slip roads were also constructed there. All these, served in easing the flow of traffic and congestion on that axis.

The reconstructed Berger Bus stop was commissioned on May 2017.

Construction of Slip Roads And Lay-Bys In Traffic Prone Roads

Determined to rid Lagos state of its legendary road traffic gridlocks, Governor Ambode set out to construct slip roads and laybys on notorious traffic prone roads in the state.

These action proved to be an effective antidote to traffic bottleneck in some roads in Lagos.

Places where slip roads and lay-bys were constructed enjoyed a new regime of free flow of traffic.

Some once notorious location include the Berger bus stop, Oworoshoki bus stop, etc.

Abuelegba Flyover Bridge

The Abuelegba Flyover is a popular landmark that Governor Ambode will be remembered for. The flyover bridge was intended to be an antidote to the perennial traffic gridlock associated with the area.

The flyover is also intended to improve connectivity with the neighnouring state in order to facilitate economic growth and generally improving the lives of residents in the area.

The Abuelegba Flyover was commissioned in May 2017.

Airport Road Reconstruction

Though a Federal road, the reconstruction project of Airport road at Mafoluku in Lagos state is being handled by the Ambode-led Lagos state government.

The Oshodi-Airport road is a gateway into the country. It connects Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos to the Oshodi axis of the state.

Tragically, for decades, that stretch of road remained a national disgrace.

From one administration to the other, the road was left in an atrocious condition – one that begged for urgent attention in order to salvage the nation’s image.

However, in May 2017, the federal government finally gave the approval for the Lagos State government to commence a total reconstruction of the road.

In the spirit of the regeneration and urbanization of Lagos state by the Ambode-led administration, work begun on the project in September 2017.

The project is intended to transform the road from 4 lanes to 10 lanes from Oshodi to the International Airport.

The road will also feature an interchange and flyover that would drop commuters to the Local Airport.

Agege Flyover Bridge

One of the many legacies that posterity will remember Governor Ambode for is the Agege-Pen Cinema flyover and bridge ramp.

The flyover and bridge ramp, which is currently under construction, is located at the Agege bus stop-Pen-Cinema axis.

The flyover and bridge ramp is designed to unlock gridlock at the Agege-Iju-Pen-Cinema axis.

The 1.4km Pen Cinema flyover and bridge ramp will run from Agege down to the Abeokuta Expressway. It is a key intervention strategy by the Ambode administration to address the perennial traffic often associated with the area.

Construction of 100 Bus Stops & Shelters

In line with the determination of the Ambode administration to change the transportation landscape with infrastructure that would support the commuting needs of over 20 million inhabitants of the state, there is an ongoing construction of over 100 bus stops and shelters around the state.

These transport infrastructure are also part of the grand design in the state Bus Reform Programme expected to redefine the commuting experience of Lagos commuters.

Wire-Mesh Median Fences on Expressway

Shortly after his election as the governor of Lagos state, Gov. Ambode approved the installation of Wire-mesh fencing on medians of major expressways around Lagos state.

Installing Wire-mesh Fencing became necessary in order to ensure safety and orderliness on the roads. Hawkers activities are limited on highways, , pickpockets, robbers and other criminals who emerge from nowhere and snatch valuables from unsuspecting pedestrians before disappearing into their hideouts have also being prevented from operating easily.

Traffic Challenge Using Outdoor Advertising Solution

The administration of Governor Ambode deployed an innovative strategies at traffic control. LATIS – Lagos Traffic Information System – is a solution designed to ease traffic congestion in Lagos state.

The LATIS infrastructure consists of Traffic Arches and Sensors strategically located at major traffic decision points providing real time traffic updates /route information.

Commuters will receive these information through 20 strategically placed digital screens.

Commissions 21 Road Networks In Alimosho, Near Lagos-Ogun Border

In April 2018, Governor Ambode commissioned 21 road networks in Alimosho Local Government Area. These road networks are located at the Lagos-Ogun boundary network.

The project include the construction of the new Ikola Bridge (Old Obasanjo Bridge). Other part of the newly commissioned road network include the AIT/Raypower Road. This road was upgraded from a single carriage to a dual carriage road. This was done with the aim of improving its traffic capacity. This road is also intended to receive and distribute traffic through Oko-Filling, Old Otta Road, Osenatu, Illo, etc.

Statewide Construction of Ultra-Modern Bus terminals

Governor Akinwunmi Ambode has left no one in doubt about his desire to transform the mass transit infrastructure in Lagos state.

These transport infrastructure are also part of the grand design in the state Bus Reform Programme expected to redefine the commuting experience of Lagos commuters.

Some of the modern Bus Terminals currently being constructed include Okota, NAHCO, Ajah and the Agege Bus terminals.

These are all part of the Gov. Ambode plan to rid the state of notorious yellow commercial buses more popularly referred to as “Danfo”.

Introduction of the 5000 New BRT Bus Project

In early 2017, the Ambode-led administration inaugurated the Bus Reform Initiative (BRI).

Part of the BRI project is the injection of least 5000 new BRT buses on different routes in Lagos before the end of 2018. This is part of the plan to phase out the regime of the infamous danfos from the streets of Lagos.

Travel / Foreigners Sit On The Floor At The Airport In Lagos Due To Lack Of Seats by autojosh: 3:34pm On Jan 14, 2019
Earlier today, at the General Aviation Terminal, Ikeja – more popular known as Murtala Mohammed Local Airport 1, some foreigners were seen siting on the floor while waiting to board their flights.

These individuals decided to assume that sitting position due to the insufficient seating arrangement for travelers at the departure hall of the airport.

Ordinarily, due to the limited amount of seats at the departure hall, more travelers are left to stand. However, these foreigners decide to defy the norm by finding seating position on the floor.

Travel / The New & Yet-to-be Used Ikeja Bus Terminal Is Being Reconstructed (PHOTOS) by autojosh: 2:06pm On Jan 14, 2019

The ultra-modern Ikeja Bus Terminal was commissioned last year, precisely in March, 2018.

The event organized to commission the facility was attended with so much fanfare. The President of Nigeria – Mohammadu Buhari- did the honours of launching the landmark transport terminal situated in the heart of Ikeja.

Ironically, the terminal was touted as one of the best things to have happened to Lagos in terms of public transportation,. It was for this reason it was dubbed a world-class bus terminal and not bus-stop, especially after critics questioned the rationale of a president commissioning a ‘bus-stop’.

Months after  its commissioning, the imposing public transport facility is yet to be put in use.

See more photos of the commissioned Ikeja Bus Terminal HERE

However, and oddly, renovation work is currently going on there.

The interlocking stones have been uprooted and a number of other things within the terminal are being reconfigured.

Interestingly, part of the reconstruction work going on within the facility is the erection of a privately-owned, but government-approved shopping mall.

The reason for the reconstruction of the Ikeja Bus Terminal is unclear.

The cost of constructing the Ikeja Bus Terminal was not made public. Thus, it is also unclear how much this afterthought will cost the tax payers in Lagos state.

The Ikeja bus terminal will serve as the hub of all transport activities within the Ikeja Zone, serving over 50,000 passengers daily and providing access to many destinations, including Oshodi, Ojota, Iyana-Ipaja, Maryland, Agege, Ogba, CMS, Obalende, and Iyana-Ipaja.

See below photos of the reconstruction work currently going on at the Ikeja Bus Terminal.

Travel / Japanese Passport Is World's Most Powerful Passport, Tops List Again by autojosh: 12:36pm On Jan 09, 2019

Once again, Japan made it to the top position of the World’s Most Powerful Passport!

This is according to the rankings by Henley Passport Index – an organization that periodically measures the access each country's travel document affords.

This will be the second time in succession that Japan has held that position.

The ranking is revised quarterly.

According to Henley Passport Index report, Japan retains its top spot as the world's most travel-friendly passport thanks to the document's access to 190 countries.

South Korea edged up the ranking from October's index to join Singapore, offering access to 189 jurisdictions, thanks to a new visa-on-arrival agreement with India.

That the top countries in the list are all Asian -- along with other significant movers from the region -- shows that many Asia nations are "sustaining a high comfort level with mutually beneficial economic migration," Parag Khanna, the founder and managing partner of FutureMap in Singapore, told Henley & Partners.

Politics / Shocker: N8.7billion Allocated For Suspended National Carrier In 2019 Budget by autojosh: 11:07am On Jan 09, 2019
The proposed 2019 Budget has some very curious inclusions.

For instance, in 2019 budget proposal, the Nigerian Government earmarked N8.9billion for the suspended national carrier.

Note that, the national carrier, 'Nigeria Air', was suspended indefinitely in September 2018. This happened after the government said it was unable to attract investors to take up the 95 per cent stake in the carrier.

However, before the suspension, the Nigerian government through Hadi Sirika, Minister of State for Aviation, said it spent $8million on logo and brand name of the airline (Nigeria Air).

A breakdown of the 2019 budget also shows that another N500million for transaction advisers and N200million for consultancy was allocated to the establishment of the national carrier.

Also, N45,418,735 million was budgeted to evacuate sewage at the state house.

The state house has also said it will spend N42,628,061 to extend the Villa bodyguard kitchen, while N27,213,525 was earmarked for the purchase of sporting equipment for the State House Sports Club.
