The Lagos-Benin Expressway.

Politics / Lagos-Benin Expressway: Buhari Vs. Jonathan, Who Did It Better? by autojosh: 9:58am On Nov 01, 2018
The Lagos-Benin expressway connects the Western part of Nigeria to the South-South, South-Eastern and Middle belt states in Nigeria.

For decades, this very important expressway was in the most atrocious condition.

Successive governments left the Lagos-Benin expressway in the most outrageous state of disrepair.

The road featured dangerously situated crater-seize potholes and collapsed sections.

Journeys on this expressway took far longer than necessary. Journeys that ordinarily ought to last for 3 hours took 8 to 10 hours, or more!

It is on record that a federal Minister once famously wept – during a visit to a failed portion of this expressway – on account of the horrific condition of this national expressway.

However, a sincere contract for the rehabilitation and reconstruction of the Lagos-Benin expressway was awarded by the Goodluck Jonathan administration.

The reconstruction of the Lagos-Benin expressway commenced in 2011.

The reconstruction project was broken down in two phases.

Phase 1 involved the reconstruction of the of the Benin-Ore expressway axis of this federal road.

Phase 2 involved the reconstruction of the Ore-Sagamu axis of the Lagos-Benin expressway.

In 2014, the reconstruction of the Benin-Ore axis was completed by the Jonathan administration.

The Benin-Ore axis of this famous road now wears a resplendent outlook.

The new state of the road now makes journeys smoother and faster. A journey from Ore to Benin, which hitherto lasted for several hours, now takes just one hour.

See photos of the reconstructed Benin-Ore axis of the Lagos-Benin expressway below.

The Phase 2 of the rehabilitation of the Lagos-Benin expressway (Ore-Sagamu axis) suffered delay in its commencement. Ostensibly, this was because of the change of government in 2015.

Nonetheless, reconstruction eventually commenced, though at a very slow pace.

Three years after,as opposed to the reconstruction of the Ore-Sagamu axis of this very important expressway, the roads have been patched to rid it of some potholes.

Indeed, the stretch of road from Sagamu to Ore now wear a pothole-free look. However, the motoring experience on the road is still very bumpy.

See the pictures of the Mohammadu Buhari rehabilitated Sagamu-Ore axis of the Lagos-Benin expressway below.

Travel / Is Ojodu-Berger Bus Stop Toilet The Most Sophisticated Public Toilet In Nigeria? by autojosh: 9:53am On Nov 01, 2018
One of the legacies of the Governor Akinwunmi Ambode administration is the remodeling and construction of the Ojodu-Berger stop. This very important bus stop is located at the fringes of the state.

The reconstructed bus stop features a very expansive layby.

However, a very conspicuous feature of the bus stop is a strategically located public convenience (toilet).

This ultra-modern public toilet is indeed a visually-pleasing sight to behold.

Apart from other features, the public toilet facility is designed to make it easy for physically challenged Lagosians to use.

Interestingly. these public toilets have been installed for quite some time now. Strangely, it is yet to be commissioned for public use.

This has now left frequent commuters at the Berger Bus stop wondering if these particular public toilet toilets were situated there to offer relief to commuters, or they were simply placed there to offer aesthetic value to the remodeled Berger bus terminal.

All that notwithstanding, isn’t this the most resplendent public convenience you have seen in Nigeria?

Travel / FG Patches Potholes On Sagamu-Ore Axis Of The Lagos-Benin Expressway by autojosh: 1:14pm On Oct 29, 2018
The Lagos-Benin expressway is one of Nigeria’s most traveled roads. Daily, hundreds of thousands of Nigerians ply this economically crucial highway.

This highway primarily connects states of the South-West to states in the South-South, South-East and the Middle belt.

For decades, the Lagos-Benin Expressway – especially the Benin-Ore stretch – was notorious for its atrocious condition and the neglect by successive Governments.

In 2011, the reconstruction of the Lagos-Benin Expressway commenced.

In 2014, the reconstruction of the Benin-Ore section of the Lagos-Benin Expressway was completed.

See Photos Of The Reconstructed Benin-Ore Road by the Goodluck Jonathan Administration HERE

Ostensibly, due to the change of government, the second phase of the reconstruction work on the expressway – specifically, the Ore-Sagamu section – suffered some delays. However, work eventually commenced there, though at a very slow pace.

Motorists plying that route complained of the horrific condition of the Ore-Sagamu axis of that road. The road is characterized by innumerable amount of potholes, some of them, crater-size.

However, the Federal Government recently offered the Sagamu-Ore highway a palliative intervention.

The Buhari-led government recently embarked on a project on that stretch of the highway to rid the roads of as many potholes on it. Some theorists speculate that this particular intervention effort has everything to do with electoral campaigns for the 2019 general elections.

That notwithstanding, Autojosh.com went on a drive along the Sagamu-Ore axis of the Lagos-Benin expressway.

We can authoritatively confirmed the patch work on this very busy stretch of the road.

Driving on the Sagamu-Ore expressway is still a very turbulent experience, however a significant amount of the dangerously-positioned potholes have indeed disappeared from the road.

See some photos of the road below.

Politics / Is Nigeria The Costliest Place In The World To Build Roads? by autojosh: 8:07am On Oct 29, 2018
In Nigeria, when the government – Federal, State, Local Government – announce how much they spend or intend to spend on a short distance road project, the amount always leaves one feeling dizzy.

It has become the norm; in Nigeria, the average cost for constructing a kilometer of road is N1Billion. And this is against the World Bank’s benchmark of N238million.

Even sadder is that when eventually completed, some of these roads do not stand the test of time.

According to a 2009-2013 report on Road Infrastructure Development in Nigeria, the cost of road construction in Nigeria compared to other African countries is outrageous

The report was published by the Abuja-based Centre for Social Justice (CSJ). It was a report based on an earlier study conducted by the World Bank in 2000.

According to the CSJ report, in Nigeria, constructing a kilometer of road costs between N400 million and over N1 billion.

Now, here are a few examples to support the CSJ report.

In 2013, the Federal Government awarded the contract for the reconstruction of the 127km Lagos-Ibadan Expressway at N167bn ($1bn at the time it was awarded)

Interestingly, and also in 2013, a similar contract was awarded for the 1,028km Lagos-Abidjan road project. The Economic Community of West African Countries (ECOWAS) estimated this project to cost between N167bn and N240bn.

Note, the ECOWAS six-lane project is expected to connect five (5) major cities in the region namely Lagos, Nigeria; Cotonou, Benin Republic; Lome, Togo; Accra, Ghana and Abidjan, Cote D’Ivoire.

In other words, the number of kilometers to be covered by the ECOWAS project is 8 times higher than Nigeria’s Lagos-Ibadan Express road project; and the cost per kilometer is far lower than that of Nigeria.

At the projected maximum cost of N240bn, the cost of the ECOWAS road per km will be N234m. Whereas the six-lane Expressway road contract awarded by the Federal Government at N167bn cost N1.3bn per kilometer.

In the Limpopo Province of South Africa, to build a kilometer of paved road, it will cost N33m or $194,000, while the maintenance cost stands at N7.6m ($45,000).

Meanwhile, in 2006, the Lagos State Government signed a 30-year concession agreement with the Lekki Concession Company to finance, build, operate and maintain the Lekki-Epe Expressway. This was to be for a given period before it would revert to the government. The concession model can otherwise be called BOT- Build, Operate and Transfer.

At a cost of approximately N1bn ($5.9m) per km, the Lekki-Epe Expressway project also far overshoots the World Bank benchmark.

Similar examples of such outrageous road contract amounts are replete in Nigeria, for instance:

According to reports, the contract for the 9.52-kilometer Ibadan Township road in Oyo State was awarded at the cost of N5.8 billion, which is approximately N609.24 million per kilometer.

Similarly, the contract sum for the Abuja/Abaji/ Lokoja road, a 196-kilometer project Federal Government contract was awarded at an estimated cost of N42 billion in 2006.

It was however reviewed upward to N116 billion in 2011, an increase of 176.2 per cent. This was in spite of the declining rate of inflation at an average of 2.52 per cent within the five-year period.

In a similar fashion, the Oyo State government awarded the contract for the dualisation of some major roads in the state at the cost of N29.3bn. The projects include expansion and sectional repairs on roads with a combined length of 10.3km at the cost N7.9bn: 4km Ibadan-Oyo Expressway/Iseyin-Oyo junction to Owode.

The Oyo state government also said it would dualise 6.2km Ibadan –Oyo-Iseyin/Okeho junction road in Iseyin at a cost of N6.1bn.
The dualisation of the 7.4km Dugbe-Magazine-Eleiyele to Aleshinloye-Onireke/Agbarigo Road in Ibadan was also awarded by the state government at the cost of N7.1bn. That is also about N1biilion per kilometer.

Countless other examples of exaggerated road construction amount abound in Nigeria.

Politics / And The APC Vs. PDP Campaign Poster War Is About To Begin (see PHOTOS) by autojosh: 8:25pm On Oct 26, 2018
Recently, all around Nigeria, street surfaces were overwhelmed by political campaign posters. This was prior to and after the primary elections to elect candidates for the different political parties.

Lagos state was by no means different.

Posters from politicians from different political persuasions were screaming for attention.

However, the most dominant ones were posters of politicians of the stock of the All Progressive Congress (APC). Campaign posters of the incumbent Governor and his closest competition, Sanwo-Olu, were the most prominent.

Indeed, it was a poster galore.

After some media outcry about the nuisance that the posters had become on the street, LASAA went to work. They started a campaign to rid the various street surfaces of these posters especially on major roads and expressways.

Interestingly, newer posters are emerging. And as to be expected, especially as the election approaches, more posters are anticipated to flood the streets.

And just when we are celebrating the fact that LASAA has started clearing the street surfaces of these posters, suddenly the opposition PDP decides to commence their campaigns.

Note that, in 2006, the Lagos state government enacted the Lagos State Signage and Advertisement Agency (LASAA) Law.

This law was designed to prevent and punish the act of defacing street surfaces by residents.

The offence of posting posters on street surfaces contravened Section 168 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 (Revised). The section prescribes a six months imprisonment or a fine of N90,000 for offenders.”

See some posters spotted on the streets of Lagos today.

Travel / See What These Okada Riders Are Doing On The Road (PHOTOS) by autojosh: 1:09pm On Oct 26, 2018
First, Okada operations are banned on major roads in Lagos.

That notwithstanding, and due to the level of lawlessness that pervades our society, Okada riders are now back to major roads - roads that they are prohibited from plying.

Even worse, Okada rider now brazenly carry out dare-devil stunts on some of these roads.

For instance, in some roads, Okadas can be seem riding at great speed – riding against traffic. Thus putting their passengers and themselves at great risk.

Sadly, the traffic law enforcers appear to look the other way without a care.

The bridge named the “New Nile Bridge” spans 525m. It is located in the town of Jinja and stretches across the source of the River Nile.

The bridge is the second of its kind in East Africa after Tanzania’s Kigamboni Bridge which spans 680m. It is also the fifth longest cable-stayed bridge in Africa.

The bridge, which cost $112million, was funded by the Japanese International Cooperation Agency (JICA).

Career / See How These Road Cleaners Are Working Dangerously (PHOTOS) by autojosh: 2:36pm On Oct 24, 2018
These are highway managers or community sanitation workers (CSW) in Lagos.

They are employed by the Cleaner Lagos Initiative (CLI).

Not too long ago, CLI set out to recruits 27,000 sanitary workers or highway managers across the state. The recruitment was publicized via various media channels.

In the advertorials, it was stated that successful candidates would be entitled to some benefits, such as decent wages, healthcare service, protections such as insurance and pension guarantees, etc.  Our investigations revealed that these workers do not enjoy most of these benefits.

Daily, these highway managers start their sanitary duties as early as 6am.

At inception of the CLI project, these road workers were equipped with safety devices to ensure their safety while cleaning the streets.

Primarily, they were kitted in brightly coloured outfit. This is intended to make them easily visible to on-coming motorists.

They were also equipped with reflective traffic safety cones – or pylons.

Pylons are usually cone-shaped markers that are placed on roads or footpaths. They function to redirect traffic or serve as advance warnings hazards or dangers, or the prevention of traffic. In other words, they serve to protect these road cleaners from potentially dangerous traffic situations.

However, lately, it has become common sight to see these sanitary workers right in active duty in traffic without the sight of a pylon.

Indeed, the absence of pylons clearly puts their lives at huge risk.

There is absolutely no reason why these workers should work in the midst of  busy traffic without this form of protection.

The Cleaner Lagos Initiative (CLI) is a comprehensive plan to privatize all aspects of waste management in the city. It is an initiative of the Ambode-led administration.

CLI is targeted at effectively managing waste in the state. The Initiative is being supported and implemented by Visionscape in partnership with the Lagos state government.

In a move at reinforcement, the company issued a government-backed N50 billion (approximately US$ 140 million) “green infrastructure” bond in August 2017 to finance its operations.

Visionscape is part of the Visionscape group, a Dubai based multifaceted group of companies that specialises in waste management, flexible packaging, polymer compounding, polymer recycling.

The organisation has a ten-member board which includes a Nigerian, Adeniyi Makanjoula.

Car Talk / 9 Places Car VIN (vehicle Identification Number) Is Located (Photos) by autojosh: 1:10pm On Oct 24, 2018
One of the most important checks you should carry out when buying your brand new, tokunbo or some Nigerian used cars is a VIN check. If you are wondering why you need a VIN check for a brand new car, i'll burst your bubble by telling you that some used cars are refurbished and sold as brand new.

You are on your own if you still buy cars without doing a VIN check in this day and age that cars with multiple combo accidents are trooping into Nigeria on a daily basis.

I've discussed with several people who think the VIN of a car is one covert number that you need some high level security clearance to have access to. Some even say they don't have a clue how to locate the VIN. Don't allow any car seller to use this bread to take your soup away.

Today, Autojosh.com will be taking us through 9 places we can find the VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) of our vehicles.

1. Under The Front Windshield On The Driver's Side
This is about the easiest place to check the VIN of a car. You don't need to open the door of the car. You don't even need to touch the car. All you need to do is stand close to the windshield on the driver's side. Look at the lower part of the windshield where it meets the dashboard. There it is in the picture below.

2. Driver's Side B-Pillar
By default, most people check either the first option above or this second option which is also very simple. Just open the driver's door and check the sticker on the B-Pillar that the door jams into.

3. On The Driver's Door Frame
In some cars, the VIN sticker can also be found on the inner part of the driver's door. Open the door and check its edges i.e that part of the door that jams into the B-Pillar.

4. Near The Driver's Door Hinge
The part that has the door hinge as seen in the photo below

5. Under The Bonnet
Another place to find the VIN of your car is by opening the bonnet. The yellow arrows in the photo below are pointing to the places you can find the VIN. It may be found on a sticker or engraved to the body.

6. Vehicle Documents:
This is one easy place to spot the VIN of a car especially when the car is not in sight. You can check the vehicle licence, bill of lading, custom papers, etc. I recommend that you confirm the accuracy of the VIN in the documents with what is actually on the vehicle as soon as you can just to be sure that there is no error in the numbers on the document.

7. Under the Rear Wheel Well
Some vehicles have their VIN located in the rear wheel well. In some cases mud must have covered the thing.

8. Underneath the Front Chassis

9. Spare Tyre Compartment in the Boot
Open the boot of your car, lift the spare tyre and check underneath the spare tyre.

If you still can't find the VIN of your car, there's a problem somewhere. If you found yours in a place that is not included in this list, don't forget to give us a hint in the comment section.

Note: The importance of VIN checks cannot be overemphasized but do not rely solely on it as some VINs may have been altered and some records may have been omitted or not reported.

Travel / Are The Dedicated BRT Lanes In Lagos Now Free For All? (see PHOTOS) by autojosh: 11:46am On Oct 24, 2018
A common joke these days is that  - since losing out on his re-election bid – Governor Ambode has retired from working.

The basis for this – perhaps, humorous - theory is what appears to be a relaxed administration on several government functions in the state.

A good example is how, these days, there seem to be little or no effort to clear the ubiquitous heaps of refuse on the streets.

Well, this might appear as a mischievous theory, but certain activities seem to support that line of thought.

For instance, one function that has been significantly relaxed is the enforcement of the non-violation of the law prohibiting the use of the BRT lanes by non-BRT, non-emergency vehicles. Instead, it has become a common sight to this law being contravened.

The dedicated BRT lanes are now used by Okadas, Danfos, personal vehicles, military or police vehicles, etc., use the BRT lanes to escape traffic bottlenecks.

Interestingly, the once-upon-a-time efficient BRT Lane Monitoring task force appear to have gone missing.

It is worthy of note that during the administration of Gov. Fashola, there was a strict adherence to that law.

However,  these day, it appears as if  LASTMA officials– who are the primary enforcers of this law – seem to have decided to look the other way. Some theorists suggest that this became a common practice after the rebuke of the LASTMA officials by Governor Ambode for a more “civil” way of dealing with traffic law offenders.

The BRT lane is a component of the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT)  system. It is designed to increase the frequency of trips by BRT buses, especially at peak times.

Celebrities / "Mr. Bean" Rowan Atkinson, The Cars This Funny Actor Owns (PHOTOS) by autojosh: 5:15pm On Oct 23, 2018

Rowan Atkinson is an English actor, comedian and screenwriter. He achieved international fame playing the character "Mr. Bean" in comedies.

Mr. Bean is considered as one of the funniest actors in the world.

One of the major fascination and interest of this very successful actor is cars.

The comedian has spent a fortune on a huge vintage and classic car collection fetish that includes Aston Martins, Audi A8, Mercedes-Benz 500E, Bentley Mulsanne, Honda Civic Hybrid, Lancia Delta Integrale, Rolls Royces and McLaren F1.

Atkinson also has a fascination for Lorries. He holds a category C+E (formerly "Class 1"wink lorry-driving license, gained in 1981.

His lorry-driving skill particularly came in handy when making movies. For instance, in 1991, he starred in the self-penned "The Driven Man", a series of sketches featuring Atkinson driving around London trying to solve his obsession with cars, and discussing it with taxi drivers, policemen, used-car salesmen and psychotherapists.

He is also a lover of car racing. He appeared as racing driver Henry Birkin in the television play “Full Throttle” in 1995.

From 1997 to 2015, Atkinson owned a rare McLaren F1. In October 1999, the car was involved in an accident in Cabus, near Garstang, Lancashire, with an Austin Metro.

August 2011, again this same car was damaged in a serious crash and it caught fire after Atkinson reportedly lost control and hit a tree.

That accident caused significant damage to the vehicle, taking over a year to be repaired and leading to the largest insurance payout in Britain, at £910,000.

In July 2001, Atkinson crashed an Aston Martin V8 Zagato at an enthusiasts' meeting, but walked away unhurt. This was whilst he was competing in the Aston Martin Owners Club event, at the Croft Racing Circuit, Darlington.

Strangely, for an exotic and luxury car collector, Mr. Bean does not own or even like Porsches.

According to him, "I have a problem with Porsches. They're wonderful cars, but I know I could never live with one. Somehow, the typical Porsche people — and I wish them no ill — are not, I feel, my kind of people."

"Mr. Bean" is estimated to be worth about 65 million Pounds.

Travel / See The Current State Of Construction Work At The Oshodi-airport Road (PHOTOS) by autojosh: 3:22pm On Oct 23, 2018
The photos below show the current level of reconstruction and expansion work at the Oshodi-Airport Road, Lagos.

Though a Federal road, the project is being handled by the Lagos State government.

The Oshodi-Airport road is a gateway into the country. It connects Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos to the Oshodi axis of the state.

The road offers first time visitors to Nigeria their earliest impression of the country.

Tragically, for decades, that stretch of road remained a national disgrace.

From one administration to the other, the road was left in an atrocious condition – one that begged for urgent attention in order to salvage the nation’s image.

However, in May 2017, and with facilitation by Vice President Yemi Osibanjo, the federal government finally gave the approval for the Lagos State government to commence a total reconstruction of the road.

In the spirit of the regeneration and urbanization of Lagos state by the Ambode-led administration, work begun on the project in September 2017.

The project is intended to transform the road from 4 lanes to 10 lanes from Oshodi to the International Airport.

The road will also feature an interchange and flyover that would drop commuters to the Local Airport.

Hitech Construction Company Limited is the company handling the project.

Travel / This Is How Molues Now Look Like (PHOTOS) by autojosh: 1:36pm On Oct 23, 2018
While we are still celebrating how Molues are getting phased out - behold, Molue reinvent itself in the form of  these "BRT" buses.

Well, in actual sense, they are not BRT buses. They were, at a time. But that was before the Lagos state government outlawed their operations on the BRT corridors. This set of buses were part of the LAGBUS-NURTW franchise.

These buses tell a sad tale of neglect. Their conditions show an evident lack of maintenance services. They represent a total contrast from their once luxurious state.

Today, just like Molues, these buses – during trips – are typically overcrowded with passengers.  They breakdown during trips. Many of them have no brake or rear lights. They have chassis that are badly in need of bodywork and spray job – even wash job.

The interior are also no better. For instance, the internal walls are grimy and coated in dark colours that are in fact accumulated dirt that has caked over time. It is very doubtful if these buses are ever washed.

The interior also feature tattered upholsteries, dirty handgrips, littered floors, etc.

Their bus conductors – usually 2 or 3 in number - are very discourteous and combative. They typically seen hanging by the door side screaming out for passengers.

Today, the only advantage that these set of commercial buses have over Molues is the absence of itinerant preachers, hawkers, mobile pharmacists, etc.

Politics / How Ambode Is Fixing The Roads In Lagos (PHOTOS) by autojosh: 4:43pm On Oct 22, 2018
“Better late than never“, so goes the popular saying.

Admittedly, one thing that the Governor Ambode-led government of Lagos state has been criticized for is the neglect of roads in most parts of the state.

The administration has received not a few criticisms for the deplorable conditions of the roads in the city. Roads in Lagos are characterized by all sizes of potholes – sometimes craters-size potholes. It has made driving experience in Lagos so unpleasant.

Thankfully, it appears the Government – despite the fact that his days are numbered as the state administrator – has decided to go on campaign to restore the roads to a state of relative dignity.

Across the state, rehabilitation works on roads are ongoing.

See pictures of the road repair activities as shared online by the Lagos State Government Monitoring team.

Politics / 5 Key Transport Sector Policies That Possibly Affected Ambode’s Re-election Bid by autojosh: 2:33pm On Oct 22, 2018

Arguably, if it were left for the electorate to decide, Akinwumni Ambode, would be on his way back – for a second term - as the Governor of Lagos state.

However, the decision for his re-election or otherwise, solely became the prerogative of the supreme powers in Lagos.

Today, the man, who has been rated consistently as the Best-Performing Governor in Nigeria, is about to exit  his tenure with a reputation as an under-performer and perhaps - a villain.

Now, how the power brokers in Lagos state were able to sell that smoke-screen narrative to the electorate overnight remains a thing of mystery.

Granted, Ambode failed in some areas. Nevertheless, we cannot deny the fact that for every one area that he failed in, he excelled in far more areas.

Perhaps, Ambode’s political naivety and over-zealousness should be blamed for his current travails. The man unwittingly scripted his own downfall.

Indeed, he ought to have known better than to be on a collision course with power-brokers in the state. Mind you - by power broker, I refer not to his political godfather.

Ambode is one man who is not afraid to take some hard-line decisions - regardless of whose ox is gored. He has demonstrated this trait severally in his spell as governor of Lagos state. Ordinarily, this is the trait of a determined and focused  leader. However, often, especially in our clime, this sort of posture often leads  ones to their downfall.

For instance, upon assumption of the office of governor, one of his first policies was cautioning LASTMA officials to be civil in their activities.  It is also on record that Ambode sent the Federal Road Safety Corp (FRSC) and VIO officials packing  from Lagos state roads, etc.

However,  all these are not of the same gravity as fighting the establishments that installed you as governor of Lagos state. Establishments who install only those that are willing and prepared to protect their selfish interests - as opposed to the interests of the general public.

Autojosh presents 5 Key Transport Policies That Perhaps Affected Ambode’s Re-Election Bid

Plan to Ban Danfo Buses (introduction of 5000 BRT buses)

Ambode’s announcement to ban “Danfo” buses and 5,000 air-conditioned vehicles is, perhaps - one of his greatest undoings.

According to him, his administration had set aside N30 billion for an integrated public transportation system, which  kick-started in 2017.

“We decided that the best thing is to allow the yellow buses go and so the bus reform initiative itself is a three-year plan of 2017 to 2019 in which it intends to bring in new buses of 5,000 units in the three-year plan,” he said.

Note, the NURTW, RTEAN are the supervising union of the Danfo buses. These unions are stupendous money-making schemes in the state, and perhaps two of the deadliest thuggery syndicates in the state.

They are also very effective component of grassroots mobilization for politicians.

Banning Danfos is clearly a huge threat to these multi-billion Naira transport sector syndicates.

Reforming Motor Parks
Taking over existing Motor Parks from the control of NURTW/RTEAN was a rather daring policy by Ambode administration.

This action was part of the reform in the transport sector.

This policiy is [art of the Ambode administration effort to reconstruct some existing Motor parks in Lagos state for use as BRT bus terminals.

Some notable and very lucrative Motor parks that were taken over by the state include the Agege-Iju Motorpark, Ojota Main Garage, Berger Motorpark, Ikeja New Garage, etc.

Again, note that the primary beneficiaries of these Motor parks are the Local Government Councils together with the road transport unions (NURTW, RTEAN, etc.)

According to the Chairman of the Ojota branch of NURTW, Alhaji Mudashiru Egbedire, This forceful ejection from the parks paralyzed their business.

In the petition dated March 13 to the Lagos State House Of Assembly, and signed by the union Secretary, Dr Matthew Oloko, the union urged the speaker to ensure its members were not thrown into the unemployment market.

The Ban of NURTW-Controlled LAGBUS from BRT Operations

In 2016, the Ambode-led government of Lagos state abruptly banned the operation of the NURTW-LAGBUS-supervised from operating on the BRT Corridor.

The reason giving for the ban was constant breaches of the franchise agreement the operator signed in 2007.

Over 36 BRT franchisees, together with the original NURTW-owned BRT buses were affected.

The ban prevented them from plying the very lucrative BRT corridors to load or drop passengers. They could only use the road like other private vehicles.

On November 7, 2016, the sudden banned sparked off a protest by the LAGBUS bus operators.

The ground for their protest was that they still had a running contract with  the Lagos state government/LAMATA.

4. The Ban of LAWMA-PSP Operation

This is, perhaps, the the worst policies – aside the law on the Land Use Charge – that has emerged from the Ambode administration.

This policy would put the Lagos State Government  and Private Sector Participation, (PSP) operators, waste collection managers, etc., at loggerheads.

According to Ambode, this policy, which is packaged as the Clean Lagos Initiative, CLI, aimed at reviewing the mode of waste collection in the state, by bringing foreign investors with the right expertise and funds to manage waste collection in the state.

But the PSP operators alleged that the government embarked on a solo operation without adequate consultation.

The PSP operators Lamented that the government didn’t consult them, just as he described the policy as a strategy aimed at phasing out the PSP operators.

This face-off was further height

The hasty disengagement of the PSP component and the deployment of this new policy would lead to the refuse-filled streets of Lagos state.

The 27, 000 sweepers employed to clean the streets while the machine will take over the highways in the state did little to salvage the situation.

Helplessly, the PSP operators were later recalled, but with certain unfavorable conditions.

The PSP contractors are believed to be power brokers at the grassroots level.

Car Talk / Believe It Or Not, These Are Images Of A Very Active Truck In Nigeria! (PHOTO) by autojosh: 2:28pm On Oct 19, 2018
This truck was seen in Lagos.

It is amazing how a truck in such a dilapidated condition as this would be allowed to travel on our roads.

If the part of the truck that we can see can be this rickety, one wonders how the engine would be.

Upon request, one is sure that the driver of this truck would produce an MOT certificate. Yes. That is because the MOT-issuing authorities in Nigeria, would issue an MOT certificate on  any vehicle as road-worthy without physically examining them.

Clearly, this and many more are accidents-on-wheels, waiting to occur on our roads.

Travel / This Is Lagos; A City Swimming In Filth (see PHOTO) by autojosh: 4:58pm On Oct 18, 2018
Governor Akinwunmi Ambode is not coming back for a second term. This is by no means news any more.

The reason for his failure to secure a return ticket have been reduced to several theories.

Oddly, of late, there seem to be a consensus that Ambode’s performance is average - or even poor. This is rather strange, considering that it contradicts his consistent rating as the Best-performing Governor in the Nigeria.

That notwithstanding, many still rate him as the best-performing governor in the country. However, the Lagos state politicians that staged a gang-up against his return bid hold very resolute contrary opinions.

Indeed, Governor Ambode can be rated as having performed relatively well - at least by our very poor standard of judging our leaders in Nigeria.

However, we would be lying if we failed to admit that there are areas he performed so poorly. For instance, in the environmental sanitation department.

It goes without saying; Lagos state has never had it so bad in a very long time in the cleanliness department.

It appeared that Ambode lacked even the vaguest idea of the incredible amount of dirt that Lagos state generates.

Perhaps, this informed his hasty and sloppy adoption of the Visionscape and the Cleaner Lagos Initiative,  and the thoughtless disengagement of the PSP component. All these seem to expose his naivety in that area.

Months into the new Visionscape cleaning regime – and even with the partial recall of the PSP Operators in the environmental sanitation business – the state is still drowning in dirt.

Indeed, Ambode might have perform excellently in some areas – however,  he failed woefully in the environmental sanitation of Lagos state.

Ambode should have conformed to the popular American saying that goes thus:

"If it aren't broke, don't fix it”.

Car Talk / Checkout Our Made-In-Nigeria Keke NAPEP (PHOTOS) by autojosh: 3:06pm On Oct 18, 2018
Commercial tricycles more popularly referred to in Nigeria as Keke NAPEP, have become a major means of commute in Nigeria.

Across most cities in Nigeria, conspicuous sights of Keke NAPEP abound.

They are typically used to cover short distances as opposed to bigger commercial buses that can travel further.

Indeed, Keke NAPEP don’t come cheap.

To own one, you would have to cough out a sizable amount. Their prices range from between N500, oo0 to N650, 000

Few commercial drivers can afford them. Some drivers, in order to own one, work for it on hire purchase – a system where they ride one for a given period of time, pay the owner, and then they are handed possession of the tricycle.

Perhaps, the high cost of acquiring a Keke NAPEP is tied to the fact that they are predominately imported from India and other Asian countries.

This is one reason why we ought to look inward.

In recent times,  we have come  to behold tricycles manufactured in Nigeria. Some of them come with some interesting innovations. For instance, some come fitted with doors – unlike the imported variants. Some come with electric fan and good ventilation. Some are made to take three to six passengers at a time. A particular one is powered by electricity – yes, our very own Tesla!

Indeed, these could all be classed as the luxury version of the Keke NAPEP.

So, why are we not investing in or patronizing our locally-made tricycles?
