Politics / How Much Does It Cost To Construct A Pedestrian Bridge In Nigeria? by autojosh: 11:48am On Nov 19, 2018

The pictures above are pictures of the Ilasa pedestrian bridge. It is situated at Sadiku bus-stop at Ilasamaja on the Oshodi- Apapa expressway in Lagos state.

The bridge was constructed and commissioned in 2013 by the Babatunde Fashola Administration.

The construction firm of Messrs P.W. Nig. Ltd., constructed the about 100 meters Ilasa pedestrian bridge.

It cost the Lagos state government N400 million to construct the bridge.

That was in 2013.

Now, fast-forward to 2018.

Several pedestrian bridges have sprung up since then – many are currently being constructed by the Ambode-led government.

Considering the economic events that has occurred since 2013 when the Ilasa pedestrian bridge was constructed – e.g Naira depreciation, inflation, etc., how much do you think it now costs to construct a pedestrian bridge?

Travel / Before Noon, See How Ikorodu Road, Lagos, Looks Like (PHOTOS) by autojosh: 3:23pm On Nov 15, 2018
Ikorodu road is a major arterial highway at the center of Lagos state.

Thus far, Ikorodu road is the only road in Lagos state constricted to accommodate BRT Buses.

Ikorodu road in recent times has been characterized by major traffic snarls,. These traffic gridlocks seemed to have overwhelmed government agencies saddled with the responsibility of controlling the free flow of traffic.

Often, the traffic gridlocks on Ikorodu road is due to one of the following: Fuel tankers and container-laden trucks parked along some sections of the road, bad section of the road, lawless and indiscipline motorists, too many rickety and un-roadworthy vehicles breaking down on the road, the high number of vehicles plying that route; the narrow road due to the construction of the BRT lane, etc.

These slow traffic have become typical especially in the early hours of the day before noon.

See below photos of typical traffic scenes on Ikorodu road, Lagos.

Politics / About 100 Buhari Campaign Buses Spotted In Lagos (Photos) by autojosh: 12:16pm On Nov 15, 2018
Undoubtedly, the political battle, in days leading to the 2019 general elections, is going to be ferociously contested.

The political players are currently leaving no stone unturned in order to secure victory at the polls.

They are all mobilizing the necessary arsenals to ensure their ultimate success in the political battle.

The incumbent President, President Mohammedu Buhari, his campaign team and ardent supporters are not left out of the campaign frenzy.

The President and his campaign team are determined that the status quo is maintained. To achieve this, they are preparing an elaborate campaign process  to ensure that.

For instance, very early this morning, a very lengthy convoy of 2009 Hyundai H1 were sighted at the Lagos end of the Lagos-Ibadan expressway.

These vehicles were all uniformly branded with the campaign messages to promote the re-election aspiration of President Buhari.

Indeed, the length of the convoy was sufficient to break some record. At a point, the convoy impeded the free flow of traffic along the Magodo-Berger axis.

They buses were being driven out of Lagos state.

No doubt, our politicians are not smiling.

A Tokunbo 2009 Hyundai H1 costs about N 7million. The cost of a Nigerian-used one averages about N2.5m to N 3m.

Politics / Textile Mill Road, Benin-city: See The Current Condition Of This Popular Road by autojosh: 5:11pm On Nov 13, 2018
Textile Mill Road is a popular road in Benin city, Edo state.

The road was a major one that linked many parts of Benin and was even an alternative route to Lagos from Benin City as well as a major route to other parts of Edo State.

Textile Mill Road is also an access road to one of the biggest auto spare part market Market in the state.

In recent times, the long-stretch of textile mill road is riddled with pot-holes and ditches. This situation often lead to the breaking down of vehicles plying the road.

As with many roads in Benin city, Textile Mill roads is lacking in drainage system.

Textile Mill Road is located in Egor Local Government area of Edo state.

Eghe Ogbemudia is the Chairman of Egor Local Government Area.

Godwin Obaseki is the Governor of Edo state.

Travel / Ambode’s New Bus Stop Shelters: Can They Stand The Test Of Time? by autojosh: 12:09pm On Nov 13, 2018
As Governor Akinwunmi Ambode exists the seat of authority in Lagos state, he would leave behind not a few legacies.

Many of these legacies exits in the road transport sub-sector. They were achieved with the Bus Reform Initiative of the Ambode-led government.

Under that initiative, he attempted to revolutionize public transportation and usher in ease of connectivity within the State.

For instance, 100 brand new bus stops are currently being constructed statewide.

Each of these bus stops feature comfortable bus shelter, lay-by, lighting, walkways, guard-rails, wire-mesh fencing for pedestrian protection and passenger information system, among others.

However, there is a bit of concern expressed by some Lagos state residents. It has to do with the durability of materials used for the construction of the bus stop shelters. Doubts are being entertained in some quarters about the capacity of these bus stop shelters to withstand the test of time.

The bus stop shelters are been constructed using mild steel with low tensile strength together with acrylic glass.

In Lagos state, the residents are legends when it comes to vandalizing public infrastructure.

It is for this reason that one wonders why these bus stop shelters are being constructed using easily destroyed materials.

Unlike other previously constructed Bus stop shelters, such as the ones constructed by MTN, aesthetics appears to be the primary focus as opposed to their durability.

See below pictures of other previously constructed bus stops shelters in Lagos.

The company handling the construction of the new Bus stops and their shelters is Planet Projects Limited.

The design of the bus shelter and media was done and provided by JCDecaux Grace Lake.

The Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) is the supervising agency for the project.

Travel / One Lane Of The Alagbole-yakoyo Flyover Open For Use by autojosh: 10:37am On Nov 13, 2018
About a decade ago, the construction of the Alagbole-Odo-Yakoyo flyover commenced.

The project is the brainchild of the Ibikunle Amosu-led Ogun state government.

The flyover was designed to connect the Alagbole-Akute axis of Ogun state to Ojodu-Berger axis of Lagos state.

During the extensive period of construction of the flyover, it was a horrific experience for residents of Akute, Ajuwon, Lambe and neighbouring communities.

The flyover – which is one of the 3 flyovers being constructed within that location – suffered several abandonment.

Thankfully, the flyover is now opened for public use – though only one lane has been completed for use.

The  Alagbole-Odo-Yakoyo flyover is part of a 32km road construction project, that also includes the construction of  5 bridges.

Travel / High-risk Lifestyle: See What Some Lagosians Are Doing On The Expressway(photos) by autojosh: 11:31am On Nov 09, 2018
For whatever reasons, Lagosians are always in a hurry. Our love for short-cuts is also legendary.

Lagosians always have a way of circumventing established processes without any consideration for their consequences.

For instance, below are pictures of a busy expressway in Lagos. In the pictures, some Lagosians – despite the conspicuous presence of a pedestrian bridge – still prefer to cross the busy expressway.

What is even more interesting is that these expressways have wire Mesh fencing on the median.

These wire mesh fences were constructed by the Ambode administration. They were constructed to discourage pedestrians from crossing of the expressway. That notwithstanding, some sections of the median have been cut out to serve as thoroughfare for errant pedestrians.

Is this high-risk lifestyle something the society can blame on the government?

Travel / Ring Road, Benin-city: See The Works Of Art That Adorn This City Center (PHOTOS) by autojosh: 3:08pm On Nov 08, 2018

Road Ring, Benin-city, otherwise referred to as Kings Square or Oba Ovoranmen Square, is located in the heart of the Edo state capital.

Ring Road was the place where the colonial masters used to hold court. It was used as a center for recruiting soldiers during the colonial era. It was there the late Dr. Samuel Ogbemudia was recruited into the military after he watched a military parade at the field.

Ring road, Benin city was rebuilt to its present status by Dr. Ogbemudia when he became military administrator. The field there now houses the Benin Musuem.

All roads leading to Benin City from the east, west, north or south terminated at the Ring Road.

Some of the roads were part of the nine ancient roads that led to Benin when it was capital of the ancient Benin Kingdom.

Right at the middle of the location is the Benin City National Museum. The Edo State Assembly is also located at Ring Road. The Palace of the Oba of Benin is just a stone throw from Ring Road.

Benin city is globally-recognized as a center of arts and culture, little wonder the state capital is adorned with beautiful works of arts.

See some of the artworks on display at Ring Road, Benin-City, Edo state.

Politics / Comrade Buses: Named After Adams Oshiomhole In Edo (PHOTOS) by autojosh: 5:28pm On Nov 07, 2018

These are Edo state government-owned mass transit luxury buses.

This bus scheme is under the supervision and management of the Edo City Transport Service Limited (ECTS).

This mass transit bus scheme is the initiative of the former governor of Edo state, Adams Oshiomhole.

The buses were nicknamed the “Comrade bus” by the Oshionmhole administration. Ostensibly, they were named after the initiator, the “Comrade Governor” - Adams Oshionmhole.

Governor Godwin Obaseki recently took delivery of 75 brand new “Comrade Buses”.

It is part of an elaborate mass transit plan that includes the construction of ultra-modern Terminals, Cashless Payment by commuters, etc.

The scheme is intended to improve service to the people, boost revenue, offer employment opportunities, etc.

The “Comrade Buses” are ubiquitous sights in major towns in Edo state.

Travel / Home Of Guild Of Benin Bronze Casters: World Heritage Site by autojosh: 2:31pm On Nov 07, 2018

At the entrance of the street is an arched gateway with the inscription, “Home of Guild of Benin Bronze Casters: World Heritage Site”.

The street has global popularity for being the center of bronze work in Africa.

The street is the Igun-Eronmwon quarters in Benin City, Edo state. It is popularly referred to as "Igun Street".

From afar, the street looks like any other street in Benin city.

The structures along the street features clay houses with their signature rusted zinc roofs. These houses are predominantly art shops.

These shops also display non-bronze products such as wood carvings and paintings.

The well-paved Igun street - one of the state's biggest tourist attraction -  is a stone throw from Ring road roundabout where the Benin National Museum is located.

Igun street constitutes one of the 31 guilds of the Oba of Benin, in the ancient Benin kingdom.

The ancient guild is so secretive and exclusive that outsiders have found virtually impossible to penetrate in the hundreds of years it has existed.

All members of the guild are related by a common ancestry and descended of Inneh  Nigun, the custodian of the street and the bronze casters.

Till date, women are not allowed into the “ogun ogwa”, the foundry where the production of Benin bronze takes place.

Women can buy and resell art products from this historic location. But their presence at the foundry is a taboo kept over the centuries.

Igun street, Benin City, is listed by UNESCO as one of the world’s Cultural Heritage Site.

Travel / Keke NAPEP In Benin City Pictured by autojosh: 12:54pm On Nov 07, 2018
Just like in many urban centers in Nigeria, in Benin city, Edo state, the use of commercial motorcycle popularly referred to as "Okada" has been outlawed.

This ban has thus created a huge public transport demand that needed to be filled.

In other to satisfy that enormous demand in Benin city, especially in locations where commercial buses or cars do not ply, commercial tricycle (Auto Rickshaw) more popularly known as "Keke Napep" attempts to fill the gap.

Indeed, the demand for such means of transportation is high.

Perhaps,  as a result of the  huge demand for this mode of transportation, operators of Keke Napep in this ancient city got creative.

In Benin city, Keke Napep features contraptions designed to create an extra seat at the front row.

This unusual seating arrangement enables these tricycles to accommodate two passengers together with the rider seating in front, and with three other passengers at the rear seat.

Interestingly, the seating arrangement at the front seat  can be somewhat confusing to a visitor to the city, as determining who the Keke NAPEP rider is can be such a puzzle.

See photos below.

Travel / The Official Cost Of Obtaining A Nigerian Passport And Other Related Issues by autojosh: 3:25pm On Nov 06, 2018
This is the entrance of the Passport Office, Obalende, Lagos.

At the entrance of the premises is a very visible notice, printed on the entrance gate.

The information on it is the tabulated summary of the fees for the various services offered by the Nigeria Immigration Services (NIS).

The services and the fees offered there are wide-ranging.

They range from the procurement of fresh Nigerian International passports and their renewal, correction of errors, change of data, etc.

Indeed, the figures quoted on the notice are the official amount. However, the reality that patrons of these services are confronted with at the various passports offices around the country reveals that these fees are hardly realistic.

It is no secret that there is a deliberate scheme by some members of the Nigerian passport issuing authority to frustrate patrons to the point that these patrons will be so willing to offer more for these services.

Anyway, the image below shows the official rates for some International Passport services as promoted by the Nigeria Immigration Services (NIS).

Travel / The Car Used As Airport Taxi At Ikeja Airport, Local Wing by autojosh: 1:35pm On Nov 06, 2018
Daily, thousands of travelers use the local airport, Ikeja, Lagos.

Upon arrival, there is always a need for a taxi service to convey these travelers to their various destinations.

These needs are satisfied by the airport taxi operators.

The airport taxi cab association is a group of cab operators. They serve as the umbrella union for those who carry out commercial transport service within  the Ikeja airport.

These group of taxi operators are typically hostile to non-member commercial vehicle operators that encroach into their airport territory.

At the domestic wing of the Ikeja Airport, one thing is unique to the airport taxi operators: they all use Toyota Camry (2002 -2006 model) a.k. a "Big Daddy" as their operating vehicles.

According to an airport taxi operator that interviewed, the choice of Toyota Camry is to encourage uniformity. Beyond uniformity, the "Big Daddy" is very rugged, especially in  bad road condition.

Also, this Camry model has a very spacious interior, the spare parts are readily available, it has considerable fuel economy (especially the 4 cylinder model), etc.

All these, and perhaps more, informed the choice of "Big Daddy" as the designated auto brand/model for use by the taxi operators at the domestic wing of the Local airport.

Politics / Checkout The Disgraceful State Of A Popular Road In GRA Benin-city (PHOTOS) by autojosh: 2:39pm On Nov 05, 2018
Boundary Road, GRA, Benin is a popular road in Benin City, Edo state.

As with other parts of the Benin City GRA, Boundary Road is residence to some high-net-worth individuals in the state.

It is also the location of some Federal institutions such as the National Orientation Agency (NOA), Public Complaint Commission (PCC), etc.

The road is also the location of some prestigious hotels and recreational centers.

Boundary road, which was once known for its well-tared road surface, is now in the most atrocious state.

Just like many other roads in GRA Benin-City, Boundary Road has severely degraded in its condition.

In recent times, a significant portion of the once very well-tarred road, has degenerated to the status of an earth road.

The current condition of the road has led most motorists to abandon plying the road.

The current condition of the road is not particularly helped by the total absence of drainage facilities – a situation that is common to roads in the Benin City GRA.

See photos of some sections of Boundary Road, GRA Benin City, Edo state.

Travel / Pedestrian Bridge At UNIBEN In Edo Under Construction (PHOTOS) by autojosh: 12:31pm On Nov 05, 2018
The only Pedestrian Bridge in Edo state is currently under construction.

The Pedestrian Bridge is being constructed across a federal highway - the Benin-Lagos expressway. It is situated in front of the main gate of the University of Benin (UNIBEN), Ugbowo campus, Benin city.

The project is being funded by the Godwin Obaseki-led Edo state government.

Currently, no pedestrian bridge exists in Edo state. However, this pedestrian bridge is not going to be the first to be constructed in the state.

The first Pedestrian Bridge was constructed in the early ‘90s.  It was constructed about 500 meters away from where one is being built now. It was built in front of the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH).

That UBTH Pedestrian bridge - the first to be built in Edo state -  suffered severe lack of usage. Ostensibly, this led to its eventual dismantling and disappearance from that location. That Pedestrian Bridge was constructed by Lucky Igbinedion, during his stint as the Chairman of Oredo Local Government council.

It could be recalled that several students of the University  of Benin (UNIBEN) have lost their lives while attempting to cross the ever-busy Benin-Lagos expressway to the institution’s campus. The most recent being the one involving a certain Late Rita Awele.

All these informed the decision by the Edo state government to construct a pedestrian bridge in front of the UNIBEN main gate.

The Pedestrian Bridge, which has reached an advance stage of construction, is being built by Hartland Construction Company.

Travel / Petrol Tanker On Fire On Lagos-Benin Expressway, Roadside Shops Destroyed by autojosh: 11:18am On Nov 05, 2018
A petrol tanker suddenly burst into flames while in transit along the Lagos-Benin expressway.

Luckily, the petrol tanker was not conveying a significant amount of fuel.

The incident, which occurred last Saturday evening at the Ofosu axis of the expressway, left several road-side shops completely burnt down.

It took the spirited intervention of people around the scene of the incident to minimize the spread of the inferno.

According to an eye-witness account, no life was lost.
