Autos / 8 Automakers Who Were Fired From The Companies They Founded by autojosh: 5:45pm On Oct 08, 2018

Henry Ford

Founder: Ford Motor Company

Nationality: American

Henry Ford is famous for being the first automaker to mass produce cars that middle class Americans could afford. In other words, Ford transformed cars from an expensive item only for the rich into common means of transport.

He achieved this by sponsoring the development of the assembly line technique of mass producing cars.

This significantly influenced the automobile industry in America and enabled millions of Americans to own cars.

However, things would take an unfortunate twist.

During the World World II, Henry Ford lost daily control of his company. He wrested it back only to lose it again when he was discharged by his grandson.

Walter Owen Bentley

Founder: Bentley

Nationality: British

Walter Owen Bentley was an English engineer who designed engines for cars and aircraft, raced cars and motorcycles, and founded Bentley Motors Limited in Cricklewood near London.

The cars that he manufactured were popular for their impressive engineering and reliability.

But like the typical engineer, Bentley wasn’t the best company manager. His company racked up huge debts in the 1920s before being bought out by Rolls Royce, who let him go in 1935.

August Horch

Founder:  Co-founder of Benz; founder of Audi

Nationality:  German

August Horch was a German engineer and automobile pioneer. He was also the founder of the manufacturing giant, which would eventually become Audi.

Prior to co-founding Audi, August Horch was one of the founding fathers of Benz. In 1904, he went solo, founding Horch & Cie. Motorwagenwerke AG.

Following a dispute with his chief financial officer, Horch was forced to leave the company and re-establish it yet again in 1910. He could not use his last name anymore because his old company was using it, so he translated his last name, which means “hear” into Latin. And that is how Audi was born.

Andre Citroen

Founder:  Citroen

Nationality: French

André-Gustave Citroën was a French automaker. He is remembered chiefly for the make of car named after him, but also for his application of double helical gears.

The success of Andre Citroen‘s double helical gears made his company the 4th largest automaker in the world.

Sadly, he had a major weakness – gambling. His obsessive gambling habit ran him into debt. His indebtedness bit into the company’s finances. It was for this reason that he was fired.

David Buick

Founder:  Buick

Nationality: Scottish-born American

David Dunbar Buick create one of the most successful oldest surviving nameplates in United States motor vehicle history. He headed this company and its predecessor from 1899 until 1906.

David Buick proved to be a much better engineer than CEO. In the early 1900s, under his leadership, the company kept suffering huge financial losses. It was because of this that the new owner then - Billy Durant – got him fired. Durant later used the Buick Company to kick-start General Motors.

William Morris (later known as Lord Nuffield)

Founder:  Morris Motors

Nationality: British

William Morris was an English motor manufacturer and philanthropist.

He was arguably the greatest industrialist of his time. He founded Morris Motors, adding Riley and Wolseley, which together with Austin created the British Motor Corporation, forerunner of British Leyland. But despite his philanthropy and ambition, he was booted out as the Chairman of BL chairman in 1954.

Louis Renault

Founder: Renault

Nationality:   French

Louis Renault founded one of France’s largest automobile brand.

During World World War 1, his factory was used to manufacture armory such as the the first effective tank: the Renault FT tank.

In 1909, Renault commenced full-scale automobile production. But sadly, in the 1930s, Renault was accused of collaborating with the Nazis and sent to jail, where he lived out the rest of his days. In 1945, his company was nationalized by the French government headed by Charles De Gaulle.

Sakichi Toyoda

Founder:  Toyota

Nationality:   Japanese

Sakichi Toyoda was a Japanese inventor and industrialist. He started the Toyoda family companies – that was later renamed “Toyota”.   However, it was his son, Kiichiro Toyoda, who  - in 1935 - established the world's largest automaker, Toyota.

Unfortunately, the post-war recession lead to low sales and revenues. Sakichi Toyoda  was forced to resign in 1950.

Politics / How Politicians Deface Street Walls And Surfaces In Lagos (PHOTOS) by autojosh: 4:10pm On Oct 08, 2018
In 2006, the Lagos state government enacted the Lagos State Signage and Advertisement Agency (LASAA) Law.

This law was designed to prevent and punish the act of defacing street surfaces by residents.

At the time, it was almost impossible to see a street or road in Lagos without an eyesore of a jumble of posters, or other advertising signs.

Roads, medians, junctions and streets were literally littered with different signboards, banners of different sizes, A-frames, meant to advertise a product, service, event or organization.

Through LASAA, the Lagos State has spent millions of naira on advocacy meant to dissuade residents from posting posters indiscriminately.

The offence of posting posters on street surfaces contravened Section 168 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 (Revised). The section prescribes a six months imprisonment or a fine of N90,000 for offenders.”

Soon after LASAA was created, Lagos began assuming a refine outlook.

Transformation was visible across the State. Lagos State Signage and Advertisement Agency (LASAA) was seen to be working. In the process, countless offenders were punished.

However, there appears to be offenders that  are above the law.

These offenders are the politicians.

Lately, going on a tour of the city, one would behold a jumble of political campaign posters of politicians.

They are used to deface every street surface for example, Roads, medians, junctions and streets, etc.

And this was done just to campaign during the state primary.

Then what should one expect from as the general election approach?

At such time, every acolyte or political sidekick often print and post posters of their preferred politicians as a display of support for them.

Does Section 168 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 (Revised) not apply to these class of Lagos resident?

Or are the Lagos state politicians above the law?

Car Talk / The 2018 Edition Of Bimmerfest Held In Grand Style (see Photos) by autojosh: 12:46pm On Oct 08, 2018
The much anticipated 2018 edition of the Bimmerfest held, successfully, yesterday. The festival featured super cars, power bikes, drag races, exhibitions and several other fun activities.

The festival kicked off at 12 noon on Akin Adesola Street, Victoria Island, Lagos.

Autojosh was there to cover the event.

The dual-lane Akin Adesola Street was used for the races. The location was properly secured by security agents. Officials of the state safety agencies were also present.

The law enforcement officials ensured that non-participating cars do not make it into the lanes that were being used for the races. Instead, those cars were diverted to alternative routes..

The show started with the arrival of various cars; mostly BMW cars. Of course - it's a BMW event.

The BMW 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7 series were all present for the event. The almighty Apina B7 also graced the event.

The show officially kicked off after the BMW procession round the road mapped out for the car show. In the procession were BMW cars and powerbikes.

Immediately after that, the drivers of the vagarious BMWs displayed  diverse skills and stunts with their automobiles.

The stunts were amazing; they cooked up doughnut enough for everybody.  The smell from the burnout of the vehicle tyres saturated the air.

The event also featured mind-blowing drag races. A lot of cars competed.

There were guest cars other than the BMW brand. They included Dodge Challenger, Chevrolet Camero, Range Rover Sports, Maserati, Ferrari 488, Mercedes Benz S63 AMG, Mercedes GLE Coupe, Tiger Avon,

These are the cars that graced the event:

Car Talk / 9 Facts You Need To Know About Your Car VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) by autojosh: 6:44pm On Oct 05, 2018

Pix: autocheck

Sometime ago, we wrote an article about 22 Car Parts That Are Related To The Human Body and one of the points listed is that the VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) is similar to the human fingerprints. You can use the VIN of a car to run a history report just like the fingerprint is used for biometrics. The VIN is a unique code which is assigned to each vehicle by the manufacturer. It comprises of 17 characters (digits and capital letters) which is used to uniquely identify each vehicle.

These are 9 facts you need to know about the VIN of your car.

1. They all have exactly 17 characters

2. You can only do a VIN check for vehicles manufactured after 1980.

3. Each character in the VIN of your car has a meaning as seen in the image above e.g. The 10th character represents the year of the car.

4. The VIN of your car will never contain letters I, O, or Q. This is to ensure the letters are not misrepresented as One (1) and Zero (0).

5. It will tell you the history of your car when you use it to carry out a Vehicle History Check e.g previous accidents, flood, recalls, theft etc. Some companies have also started collating vehicle history data in Nigeria.

6. Don't rely solely on the information you get from a VIN report. The VIN of the vehicle may have been altered or a vital issue may not have been reported. Therefore, you need to carryout other checks like visual inspection, test drives etc.

7. It is a unique code which means each car has a separate VIN except the VIN has been cloned or in the case of Audi which erroneously
manufactured over a thousand cars with the same VIN.

8. The VIN report information are gathered from traffic registers, municipalities, workshops, car dealers, insurance companies, police reports, reports from owners etc.

9. It can be found in several locations in your car e.g. Under the wiper embossed in the windshield, by the door latch on the "B" pillar, in the engine bay, rear tyre well, in the vehicle papers  etc.

What else do you know about the VIN of your car? Tell us in the comment section and don't forget to like, rate and share.

Car Talk / Checkout These Weird Airbrush Car Paintings (Photos) by autojosh: 10:53am On Oct 05, 2018
Airbrush car painting is the automotive equivalent of getting a tattoo.

To achieve an airbrush car painting, Airbrushes are used to spray murals, graphics, and other artwork on automobiles, motorcycles and helmets.

By the way, an airbrush is a small, air-operated tool that sprays various media; most often paint but also ink and dye, and foundation by a process of nebulization.

Actually, this form of automotive art is not exactly new, but recently it has seen an upsurge in popularity.

Most professionals car painters prefer to use automotive grade bases through top of the line gravity fed airbrushes.

Now, there are some airbrush cars painting that tend to standout due to, well, their weirdness.

Now, check out some of them below.

Car Talk / Re: 2018 Independence Drive: The Classic Cars That Graced Event (Photos) by autojosh: 8:19am On Oct 05, 2018
omoola007:
How do i bring in a 1978 corvette. Can i import its whole of remove engine and ship separately. will i be able to clear a classic car in Nigeria?

Clearing it in Nigeria is not an issue, however, the major issue is exporting to Nigeria from the country of origin. The actual embargo for shipping cars to Nigeria in the International Trade Policy is 25 years. So some shipping lines will not even carry the car once it's above 25 years old. I'm sure this issue exists in US but not certain about Europe and Other locations.

I recommend you confirm from the shipping companies before you make the purchase.

Some people claim it's possible to ship in a container while some had to use the Cotonou route which is now a challenge due to the land border issue.

The car will surely get to Nigeria one way or the other but make sure you confirm the shipping route before you pay for the it.

Car Talk / Electric Vehicle Maker, Tesla Achieves Record Quarterly Sales by autojosh: 2:56pm On Oct 03, 2018
Clearly, the revolution is on!

The migration from carbon-based fuel-driven vehicles to electric vehicles is fast gaining momentum.

Indeed, electric vehicles (EVs) are fast selling.

Tesla, the world-renowned electric vehicle maker, recently announced that it has sold a record number of their EVs in the last quarter.

Indeed, this is regarded as an achievement giving the automaker’s struggles with quality control and production bottlenecks for its Model 3 sedan.

In a statement, Testla said that it sold 83,500 cars worldwide, including 55,840 Model 3 sedans, 14,470 Model S sedans, and 13,190 Model X crossovers.

In 2017, Tesla reached a milestone of 101,312 cars. The third-quarter sales figure was not only its highest amount since the second quarter of 2018, but it also topped the company’s annual sales for every year through 2016, when it hit 76,230 cars.

Testla is outselling EVs from other major automakers despite their customer’s reports of poor fits, mismatched paints, bumpers falling off, etc.

By contrast, through September Nissan moved 10,686 Leaf cars and General Motors sold 11,807 Chevrolet Bolt EV models. Sales from competing luxury automakers, such as BMW’s for its i3, are but a fraction of those two cars.

This news conveniently arrives within a couple of days since the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission levied two $20 million fines, one each against Tesla and its CEO, Elon Musk, who settled fraud charges with the agency and is now barred from his chairman post for three years.

Interestingly, despite its record quarterly sale, profit is still unlikely for Testla.

Tesla still has never made an annual profit, and its forthcoming quarterly report is likely to report more losses even as demand for the Model 3-with hundreds of thousands of buyers reportedly still waiting-continues.

Travel / Have You Seen A Weirder Fuel Tank Than This One In A Danfo? (PHOTOS) by autojosh: 2:07pm On Oct 03, 2018
Living in an urban center in Nigeria often presents some needless risks.

There are so many practices that we seem to take for granted, but sometimes put our lives at great risk.

Sadly, some of our socio-economic activities go largely unregulated, thus allowing some of us to throw caution to the wind.

For instance, in the photo below is the boot of a commercial buses in Lagos popularly referred to as “Danfo“.

In the boot is a contraption that serves as the vehicle’s fuel tank. Simply, the fuel that drives the vehicles engine originate directly from the plastic gallon.

Ostensibly, the danfo lacks a functional fuel tanks, thus the gallon as its fuel tank.

The commuter who provided the photo narrated that throughout the trip, the entire interior of the bus was filled with the harsh smell of petrol.

It was a risky environment where as little as the contact of two metallic objects could have ignited the petrol fumes and caused an explosion.

How dangerously we sometimes choose to live!

Arguably, a vehicle fuel tank can get no weirder.

Or have you seen a weirder fuel tank than this?

Opel is now a subsidiary of Groupe PSA, though it used to be a subsidiary of General Motors.

2. Tatra

Year founded: 1850

Founder: Ignác Šustala

Country: Czech Republic

Founded as Ignatz Schustala & Comp., Tatra is owned by the Tatra Truck company. It started out manufacturing horse-drawn carriages. In 1891, the company branched out into producing railroad cars, renaming itself as Nesselsdorfer Wagenbau-Fabriksgesellschaft in the process.

In 1897, Tetra’s technical director Hugo Fischer von Roeslerstamm purchased a Benz automobile from himself and used it as inspiration to make the company’s very first car, called the Präsident, later that year. Their first truck was manufactured the following year.

The company officially stopped producing passenger cars in 1999 but continues to make trucks, especially all-wheel-drives.

1. Peugeot

Year founded: 1810

Founder: Armand Peugeot

Country: France

As far back as 1810, Peugeot originally was a family-run coffee mill. In 1830, it ventured into the manufacturing bicycles , then salt, pepper, and coffee grinders in 1842.

Peugeot first opened its doors as a family-run coffee mill company in 1810 and eventually began manufacturing bicycles in 1830, then salt, pepper, and coffee grinders in 1842.

Armand Peugeot was interested in automobile manufacturing from early on and began producing cars in 1882.

Peugeot’s first car was put out as a collaboration with Leon Serpollet in 1889, and it was a steam tricycle that was too unreliable for mass production. In 1890, they made a better internal combustion car with the help of a Panhard-Daimler engine.

Family differences caused Peugeot to leave and found Société des Automobiles Peugeot in 1896, two years before he would begin manufacturing motorcycles, too. In 1926, the motorcycle and car makers officially split into separate companies.

Foreign Affairs / Uday Saddam Hussein al-Tikritti Cars Collection Of Son Of Saddam Hussein by autojosh: 2:13pm On Sep 14, 2018

Uday Saddam Hussein al-Tikritti was the eldest son of the late Iraqi leader, Saddam Hussein.

Uday was, for several years, considered to be the likely successor to his father. However,  he lost the place as heir apparent to his younger brother, Qusay,  due to injuries he sustained in an assassination attempt, his increasingly erratic behavior, and his troubled relationship with the family.

Uday had a nasty reputation of torture, murder, and jealousy.

He once murdered a driver with an electric carving knife. The "crime" of the driver was that the driver’s boss had introduced a younger woman to Saddam Hussein. The woman would later become the the President’s second wife.

Uday was also notorious for torturing Iraqi athletes that didn’t perform up to his standards.

For example, as the head of the Iraqi Olympic Committee, he supervised  the imprisonment and torture of Iraqi athletes who were deemed not to have performed to expectations. He called them dogs and monkeys to their faces. Imprisoned football players were forced to kick a concrete ball after failing to reach the 1994 FIFA World Cup finals.

Also, the head of members of the Iraqi national football team were shaved after failing to achieve a good result in a tournament in the 1980s.

Uday Saddam Hussein was killed in 2003 by members of the United States Army in Mosul.

Before his death Uday has reportedly amassed a car collection of over 1,200 luxury vehicles, including a Rolls-Royce Corniche valued at over $200,000.

Some exotic cars in his car collection include Ferraris, Porsches, Rolls Royces, Chevrolets, Lamborghinis, Plymouths, etc.

It was once reported that Saddam Hussein burned many of  Uday’s luxury cars as punishment for killing a bunch of people.

Many of the cars in the collection were damage in the U.S. bombings of the Iraq.  Others were destroyed and looted by angry Iraqis.

The United States Army blew up one of his seized collectables to demonstrate how car bombs worked.  That vehicle was a super rare Lamborghini LM-200.

Many pieces of Uday’s car collection are yet to be found.

The country of Iraq is littered with underground bunkers and hidden facilities that many of the lost vehicles may take years to be uncovered.

See below some photos of cars in Uday’s collection.

Car Talk / Re: 10 Reasons Why You Should Not Overload Your Vehicle by autojosh: 2:07pm On Sep 14, 2018
deebrownneymar:

Nice post Autojosh.

Quick one...Which website(s) is the best for overseas vehicle procurement in terms of reliabilty/safety, time of shipping, costs etc? Your kind advice will be well appreciated.

Thanks for the compliment.

If you intend to buy from USA, check cars.com or autotrader.com.

If you are looking at Europe, check autoscout24.com or search for the top ranking car listing website in the specific country you want to buy from.

For United Arab Emirates, visit uae.dubizzle.com or dubicars.com

Note that the cars on these websites are listed by car dealers and private sellers. So you have to carryout your personal investigation and read reviews about them before committing to any dealer. The major dealers with good reviews will usually treat you right. I advise you stay away from private sellers except you have a trusted person over there who can help you consummate the transaction.

Another popular option is buying from car auctions like copart.com and iaai.com. Several car dealers in Nigeria buy from these 2 websites. You have to register with them before you can make a purchase yourself. They have lots of damaged cars but you'll still find many with no single damage.

All the options I've listed are relatively reliable and safe. Time of shipping is practically the same across-the-board. Expect an estimated time of 5 - 7 weeks. Make sure the vehicle has proper title documents and it's ready for export before you make payment. In terms of cost, the cars from the auction sites are usually cheaper but you need to compare the prices with the listings from the dealerships before you proceed.

Car Talk / 10 Reasons Why You Should Not Overload Your Vehicle by autojosh: 11:59am On Sep 14, 2018
1. Overloading your car makes the car difficult to steer and takes the car longer to stop. The consequences of this instability can sometimes cause an accident.

2. Overloading a vehicle puts strain on the tyres of the vehicles. The tyres can overheat and wear rapidly which increases the chance of premature, dangerous and expensive failure (such as blow outs).

3. Vehicles that are overloaded consume more fuel than normal.

4. When a vehicle is overloaded, it has difficulty in accelerating. In this state, overtaking becomes very difficult.

5. Overloading your vehicle can lead to the increase in the maintenance cost of your vehicle. This is because there would be extra stain on your car’s woking components such as shock absorber, tyres, brakes and, of course, increased fuel consumption.

6. Overloading can put your car’s suspension system under severe stress. Overtime, this can damage a component of your vehicle’s suspension system.

7. The headlight of an overloaded vehicle tends to tilt up. At night, when the headlight is on, it can blind oncoming drivers. This can have fatal consequences.

8. Brakes of overloaded vehicle tend to work harder than necessary. The vehicle will be heavier due to overloading. In such condition, brakes can overheat and lose their effectiveness to stop the car.

9. Overloading your vehicle can void your vehicle insurance. Overloading a vehicle is illegal So, in the event of an accident, your vehicle insurance cover can be voided.

10. Overloaded vehicles tend to cause excessive wear and damage to roads, bridges and pavements at the expense of the taxpayer.

Travel / Why Dont The Authorities Regulate Load Limit In Inter-state Commercial Vehicles? by autojosh: 4:50pm On Sep 13, 2018
Apart from damage to the vehicle, overloading a vehicle comes with a lot of dangers.

Overloading a vehicle can dangerously prevent a vehicle from  matching up with the pace in a very fast-moving  expressway.   It can also impede the vision of the driver when he attempts to use his rear-view mirror.

The impact of the heavy load on a vehicle can heat up the tyres and lead to a sudden burst, etc.

Auto fatality can result from  overloading a vehicle.

In Nigerian Motor-parks , it is common sights to see commercial vehicles being loaded far beyond a legally acceptable limit.

In some mini-buses, after all the passengers are seated, the transporter or the driver, then goes ahead to heap luggage at the point of exit/entrance into the bus.

This kind of practice can have very dangerous consequences.

For instance, in an emergency situation on the expressway, passengers wishing to to quickly disembark from the vehicle, can be impede by the stacked luggage.

It is also important to note that  some of these stacked loads can prevent ventilation in the vehicles.

Ordinary, officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and the highway police officials should regulate and arrest such practice. Sadly, these officers are not known for penalizing commercial vehicle operators who  infringe on the overloading laws.

Instead, their interests are elsewhere.

Business / Bill Gates' Arrest: The 1979 Porsche 911 Car That Got Billionaire Arrested by autojosh: 2:36pm On Sep 13, 2018
Indeed, Bill Gates, the multi-billionaire Chairman of Microsoft inc, was arrested for traffic infraction.

He was pulled over and arrested for over speeding in his brand new 1979 Porsche 911.

Oh, by the way, this event occurred in 1979, that was 4 years after Microsoft was founded.

At the time, Microsoft was based in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Gates had just bought the Porsche 911. So, late in the night, he decided to race it recklessly on the road of New Mexico.

Interestingly, Gates was slapped with three tickets on the same night for over-speeding the Porsche 911 while on his way to Seattle.

His infamous youthful mugshot is the result of being cited for recklessly driving the Porsche 911.

His friend and co-founder of Microsoft, Paul Allen, made himself available to fulfill the bail condition.

Gates sold the car in the 1990s.

The Porsche 911 later found its way to Austria where it was registered.

In June 2012, the 1979 pearlescent turquoise Turbo model Porsche was auctioned in at the Vienna Auction House Dorotheum.

Before it was auctioned, the car had been subjected to series of upgrade and maintenance. The car was rebuilt to have a 3.3-liter air-cooled flat six engine, and it was repainted in the original colour of the car.

The car was auctioned off for $80,000 in 2012.
