Car Talk / See What These Children Did During Their Summer Holiday by autojosh: 2:12pm On Sep 13, 2018
The beat and rhythm of songs from schools in various neighbourhoods is back. The road traffic congestion during the morning rush hour is here again after several weeks of recess. The long holiday is now over.

In order not to sit at home doing nothing, parents usually engage their kids in different activities. Most common of these activities is summer classes to prepare the kids for the next class. Some embark on interstate trips, foreign trips or visits to family & friends. However, some others go ahead to learn vocational skill(s).

The parents of these set of kids took a bold step an enrolled them in an auto technician training program organised and sponsored by the foundation of Ephraim and Joeana Akwiwu Auto Shop in Owerri, Imo State.

The children were fully kitted with workshop overalls and tool kits. The training spanned through the long holiday and the children were able to gain requisite knowledge that will ensure their parents won't be left stranded by their cars. Worthy of note is the fact that this training was entirely free.

It's safe to say the man behind this program deserves some accolades. His name is Mr. Alex Ephraim and he is the same person that manufactured the popular "Combatant" which he built locally in Nigeria. See photos of the Combatant in the last photo and don't forget to watch the video of one of the kids below.

Now that you know what you know as an adult, tell us how you'll rather spend your holiday if you were still a kid? Will you attend summer classes, criss-cross the world in jumbo jets, sit at home and watch TV all day or learn a vocation amongst other?

See photos below.

Car Talk / 21 Car Maintenance Tips That Will Make Your Car Last Longer by autojosh: 1:05pm On Sep 13, 2018
1. As often as possible, check the pressure of your tyres. Do this at least once a week.

2. Regularly observe the level of the engine radiator coolant. At least, once or twice a year, make an effort to flush or change your radiator coolant.

3. Always check the engine oil level of your car. Ensure to change the oil at least every 3 - 6 months. Doing this will go a long way to lengthen the life span of your car. Also change the oil filter during every oil change.

4. Always try to check the level of the brake fluid and transmission oil as regularly as every morning.

5. Your air filters should be changed at least once every 6 months.

6. Always check your wheel balancing and alignments. Go for vehicle alignment. This will ensure the longevity of your tyres. It will also protect your vehicle from shaking while driving on speed.

7. Avoid allowing the fuel in your fuel tank to drain out completely before refueling. This will prevent dirt or other residues from being sucked in by the engine. Dirt, sucked in, can damage the injector or carburetor.

8. Refrain from using your car to carry very heavy items.

9. The suspension of your car should be checked once every eight weeks.

10. Check all drive belts in your car for cracks. This should be done at least once a month.

11. The brake system of your car is very important. Always examine it. . Check your cars brake pads at least once every 2 weeks.

12. Check your spark plugs to ensure that they are still in good working conditions.

13. Visit your auto mechanic if your "Check Engine" light comes constantly.

14. Always ensure that your tyres are well inflated. Avoid driving your car with under-inflated tyres. A car, driving with under-inflated tyres, will require more energy to move, and more energy means more fuel consumption.

15. It is often advised that you do not speed up immediately you start the car. This is necessary in order to allow the car fluids to circulate before active motion.

16. Avoid aggressive driving. This can put undue pressure on the brakes, engine and other parts of the car.

17. Reduce your car Air-conditioner usage. The car a/c causes the car to require more fuel to function. This can put unnecessary pressure on the car engine.

18. If possible, always try to avoid traffic hold up's and gridlocks.

19. Refrain from revving your vehicle engine to the red-zone mark on your dashboard.

20. Wash your car as regularly as possible. This will help get rid of dirt that can lead to rust.

21. Avoid roads with potholes or bumpy terrains.

Travel / 10 Essential Driving Tips For Pregnant Women by autojosh: 11:26am On Sep 13, 2018
1.  Minimize Your Driving

When your pregnancy has become really advanced, especially when its in the third trimester, it is important to minimize the need to drive yourself. This is especially at the point when your belly has gotten too close to the steering wheel.

If you must drive long distances, arrange to have periodic stoppages for toilet breaks and to stretch your legs.

2. Keep Sufficient Space Between You and the Car Ahead of You

Avoid tailgating.  Tailgating is when one drives too close behind the car ahead of him or her.

One reason why this is important is that in event that the car ahead of you halts suddenly, this will prevent you from stepping on your brake suddenly, and bumping your tommy unto the steering wheel.

3. Take Periodic Breaks

To keep healthy circulation, especially in your leg, it is important to schedule periodic breaks from driving, even if it’s just for a couple of minutes, so you can stretch your legs.

4. In the Event of a Collision

If you are involved in a collision with another vehicle, no matter how minor, visit the hospital to have the baby’s heartbeat checked and to verify that no harm has come the way of the baby. Even if you do not feel you have been hurt, research suggests that pregnant women in crashes without documented injuries are at greater risk of premature labour caused by a placental abruption.

7. Reduce Driving At Night

Generally, driving is riskier at night. Night driving reduces visibility, increases the chance of encountering a drunk driver and increases fatigue. So, to avoid putting yourself and the baby at risk, minimize driving at night.

6. Fill Up Before you Start Driving

Drinking plenty of water is important habit during pregnancy. Ensure to always have bottled water and fruits when travelling. It is also imperative to keep your blood sugar at a healthy level, and that you avoid eating unhealthy food. By eating before you leave the house, and packing some healthy snacks for the road, you can keep your blood sugar in check and eat healthily.

7. Be Ready For Emergencies

Expectant mothers should prepare for emergencies when driving. For instance, before driving pack a traveling pillow, toiletries, fully-charged mobile phone and additional clothes. If you are far gone into your pregnancy, you could find these items particularly handy if birth comes earlier than expected.

8. Consider Stopping Driving Around 30 weeks Into Your Pregnancy

When your pregnancy approaches its due date, it is often advised that you reduce or totally quit driving. Though driving at that period poises no direct risk, however, your reaction during emergencies could through up some risk.

9. Consider Using Public Transport

At the later point of your pregnancy, rather than drive, it is sometimes advised that you opt for a public transport vehicle, for example Yellow Cab, Uber, Taxify, etc.

10. Always Wear your Seat-belt

Wearing seat belts does not endanger the baby. Instead, it protects you and the baby. However, in your pregnant state, place the waist strap below the bump, somewhere around your Hipbones. The sash part of the seat-belt should be placed between the breasts.

Travel / Driver Crashes Into Electric Pole Along Ebeano Tunnel In Enugu by autojosh: 2:09pm On Sep 12, 2018
The accident happened between hours of 9am and 10am on Wednesday, 12th September, 2018 at the Ebeano Tunnel, off Okpara Avenue, Enugu State.

The tragic event involved one red Honda (End of Discussion) which had only the driver as its occupant. The report reaching Autojosh says that the driver was seen to be in total loss of the steering and veered off his lane with great speed into the opposite lane, hitting down a street light and then smashed onto a high tension electric wire pole (Twin Pole type).

Fortunately for the driver, the electric current flowing through the wires on the poles were miraculously seized shortly. This immediately gave way for prompt rescue to be given to the injured driver. The middle-aged man sustained some bruises on the forehead and chin and was unconscious. It’s worthy to mention that the driver was on his seat belt.

Damages to the car include; deformation of the rim, total wear-off the front bumper, damage to roof and shooting out of the SRS airbag. The injured driver is currently undergoing treatment at the Enugu State Teaching Hospital, Parklane, Enugu.

The accident restricted the flow of traffic on the road, which was a double lane, to single lane traffic. Aside this little disruption, traffic is moving smoothly as security agents and EEDC have taken control of the scene. The high tension wires have been temporarily dismantled and the vehicle is being towed off as at the time of this report.

Thanks to Mr. Ogbuagu Chiedozie Collins who reported this to Autojosh. He as well took pictures of the accident scene.

Politics / Is Lagos State Public Works Corporation (LSPWC) Failing In Its Responsibilities? by autojosh: 4:22pm On Sep 11, 2018

The Lagos State Public Works Corporation (LSPWC) was set up in the 1980. Then, it was called the Lagos State Works Management Board.

Principally, the agency was formed with the aim of handling public works with more aggression.

The agency handled construction of roads, public buildings and other public Works with emphasis on Direct Labour approach.

Some public buildings constructed by the agency include the Old Governor’s Office, Alausa, Onikan Stadium etc.

Notably, the agency was particularly most effectictive during the administration of Col. Buba Marwa, when he became the Administrator of Lagos state in 1996.

Marwa then restructures and renamed the agency Direct Labour Agency. The focus being the maintenance and rehabilitation of roads within the State.

During that period, the Agency tackled this duty headlong and recorded a lot of achievements on construction/rehabilitation of roads like Ikorodu Road (Owode Onirin to Ikorodu Roundabout), AIT Road, Agbado-Ijaiye Road, Iju-Ishaga-Oke Aro Road, among others.

With the return to democracy in 1999, the administration of Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu again restructured the agency, and this time, renamed it renamed Public Works Bureau.

The vision of the agency was to be a “To be a formidable name in Road Rehabilitation and Construction” .

This is also highlighted in the agency’s mission Statement which is:

“To be primarily responsible for the Rehabilitation and Construction of all roads, such that Roads remain motorable all year round by Responding promptly to all situations. This is to be accomplished at minimal cost, while not compromising quality and efficiency”.

In order to make the agency more resourceful and independent, an Asphalt Plant was built at the disposal of the Corporation. This has helped in their operation in no small measure.

The Asphalt Plant was manufactured by MARINI SPA of Italy and was installed at 300 ton/hour Capacity in November 1997.

Tragically, today,  despite the incredible resources at the disposable of the LSPWC, Lagos state has become a state bedeviled by scandalous amount of potholes and ditches on it roads.

So, is the Lagos State Public Works Corporation (LSPWC)  not terrifically under-performing  in its primary responsibility of rehabilitating and constructing roads and keeping them in motorable condition?

Politics / LASTMA Official Spotted Fixing Bad Portions Of The Road (see PHOTOS) by autojosh: 2:27pm On Sep 11, 2018
It is not part of their official responsibilities. Still, they went ahead to do it.

They are officials of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA). They were seen providing palliatives to failed portions of the road.

They did it to ensure free flow of traffic on the Bonny Camp round-about in Victoria Island.

Ordinarily, the Lagos State Public Works Corporations (LSPWC) is the agency saddled with such responsibility.

Kudos to these conscientious LASTMA officials!

Produced in 1969, the GM Astro III, was produced when NASA’s space program was the envy of the world, transistors were replacing tubes in radios, jets replaced propeller power and the space age reigned supreme.

Travel / Why Don’t Nigerians Give Way To Emergency Vehicles In Traffic (see PHOTOS) by autojosh: 12:04pm On Sep 10, 2018
This scene was captured this morning.

It was a traffic scene that features a Fire Service Vehicle. It was, ostensibly, on an emergency run.
Its lights were flickering and the siren blaring.

Yet, it somehow succeeded in being stuck in a traffic gridlock along the Surulere Industrial Road/Adeniyi Jones road in Ikeja.

No motorist on that route seemed the least interested in giving way for the emergency vehicle to pass.

Sadly, the time was around 8am, on a Monday morning – one of the most notorious rush hour periods in Lagos state.

For all we know, the Fire service truck could have been racing to a building that is being consumed by inferno.

The emergency vehicle was eventually left with no choice but to exercise patience and then go with the traffic flow.

This begs the salient question: why do we find it difficult to spare a minute to grant emergency vehicles access in traffic?

Are we that much in a hurry to get to our destinations in Lagos?

Or could it be distrust because of often abuse of such privileges by emergency workers?

Three suspected one-chance robbers were caught on Third Mainland Bridge on Monday.

They were actually four members but one of them jumped into the lagoon while being chased by officers of the  Rapid Response Squad (RRS).

The arrested robbers, John Akinyemi, 27, Paul Oliseh, 37, and Amos Williams, 12, were arrested on Monday afternoon on the Third Mainland bridge after a chase by the Rapid Response Squad patrol team monitoring Iyana-Iworo.

One of the robbers, who was later identified as Junior, 19, was reported hit by speeding vehicles twice before he jumped into the Lagoon.

According to the leader of the gang, John Akinyemi, “there were four of us. I was in charge of calling the team to work. It was our first trip of the day. We took four passengers in Estate Bus stop in Alapere. They were going to Oshodi. We dispossessed them and dropped them off before Iyana-Oworo one after the other”.

“We took their phones and money. We have been doing this for more than three months. We sell the mobile phones and jewelries, and we share the money”.

One of the victims, Semiu Oluwaseun, who alerted the RRS officer immediately he was thrown out of the moving bus, said the robbers collected his phone and the sum of N500, 000.

Another victim, Jamiu Ojuroye, who was robbed on Sunday, identified John Akinyemi as the driver of the bus he was robbed in. He noted that he was robbed on Sunday night and the robbers team took N150, 000 from him before they threw him out of the speeding bus.

Ojuroye added that after the struggling with the robbers, they poured a peppery substance on his face, took his money before throwing him off around 8.00pm.

The robbers were paraded by the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Imohim Edgal, at the Command Headquarters.

Car Talk / 5 Things You Should Never Leave In Your Car by autojosh: 6:23pm On Sep 03, 2018

There are things you’re advised not to leave in your car. This applies especially when the inside of your car gets hot. Inside of your car can handle hot temperature because that’s the way they were designed.

Withstanding high temperature may not be the same for some other things you leave in your car.

We all know that fresh tomatoes shouldn’t be left for long in your trunk, but there are other items you are advised to take along with you when you park and exit your car.

These are 5 things you should not leave in your car.

1. Children:
Sure, they are not things but they are more important to us than anything in this world. The sad reality is they are sometime left behind or forgotten in cars.

Some minutes after parking, the temperature inside of your car can go high more than the outside temperature. Such heat can be a death trap for kids. Don’t leave kids in a car, they can die of suffocation.

2. Medications:
Researches have shown that extreme temperature can affect the molecular structure of medications. If you’re an art student, don’t ask me the meaning of molecular structure.

Exposing drugs to such high temperature will compromise its efficacy.

3. Electronics:
Most of the electronic gadgets we use are not friendly with heat. Extreme temperature can damage the processors in these devices as well as reduce their battery life.

They are not only vulnerable to heat; burglars can see them and want to break into your car.

4. Original copies of your car documents:
It is always advisable to just keep the photocopies of these documents inside of your car. it is very risky to leave the original copies inside.

5. Bottle water:
This is most applicable to plastic water bottles. When they are exposed to high temperature, chemicals from the plastic can make their way into the water and contaminate it.

You can add yours if you know any.

This African country -  not too long ago - was ravaged by a major civil war.

The war brought the country, most especially its capital city, Kigali, to ruins.

However, the country has revolved to pick itself from the ashes of destruction.

Today, Rwanda is fast becoming a model for many African countries.

Rwanda, under a visionary leadership, has impressively developed its social infrastructure to the extent that it has become a key destination for foreign direct investments.

On the last Saturday in each month, traffic stops and the city comes together to clean the streets of Kigali. Even the President takes part in the exercise.

Non-biodegradable plastic bags have been banned. The government fines persons or business with plastic bags.

Autojosh.com recently paid a visit to Kigali, the capital of Rwanda. While there,  something caught our attention. The network of impressive tarred roads, were all devoid of potholes!

The pothole-free tarred roads in Kigali also features streetlights that are  functional. Well-paved sidewalks further accentuate the pleasant outlook of the roads.

The road networkin Kigali is under the management of the Rwanda Transport Development Agency. The agency is supervised by the Rwanda Ministry of Infrastructure.

Rwanda - a landlocked nation - is highly dependent on road transport. The country has no rail services.

The pump price of PMS (Petrol) is 1,109 Rwanda Franc. That is equivalent of   N470/liter.

Diesel, there, sells for 1005 Rwanda Francs. That is the equivalent of N426/liter.

Rwanda Franc exchanges for 850/870 per Dollar.

Rwanda has a population of about 12,5 million inhabitants.

Paul Kagame is the President of Rwanda.
