Car Talk / Mercedes Benz W124 Popularly Known As 'V-Boot' Is 35 Years Old (Photos) by AutoJoshNG: 7:34pm On Dec 04, 2019

The Mercedes-Benz 124 Model Series which is popularly known as V-Boot was introduced 35 years ago. Years back, this was a popular modern car, but today, it’s now a young vintage car.

On 26 November 1984 the brand from Stuttgart initially introduced the new saloons (W 124) in Seville (Spain). They were introduced to the market in December of the same year. Later the estate (1985, S 124), coupé (1987, C 124), saloon with a long wheelbase (1989, V 124), cabriolet (1991, A 124) and chassis for special bodies were to follow.

In 1993 the model series became the first generation of the upper executive segment of Mercedes-Benz to carry the E-Class name. The 500 E and 400 E V8 were particularly sort-after classics; the performance versions by Mercedes-AMG as well as the elegant two-door versions were too.

This Mercdes-Benz was among the cars our fathers rocked back in the days. Most daddies preferred the manual gearbox to the automatic gearbox. This was regarded to be a road warrior built for Nigerian roads.

Politics / Obaseki Introduces Revenue Scratch Card In Edo For Levies Collection by AutoJoshNG: 7:08pm On Dec 04, 2019
In Nigeria, the collection of levies from commercial motorists is a multi-billion naira industry, especially in major cities.

The responsibility of collecting these levies typically falls on the road transport unions and/or political allies of politicians. Sadly, a huge chunk of these monies is usually unaccounted for, as they often find their ways into private pockets.

The current Edo State Government, as led by Governor Godwin Obaseki, has made a clear departure from that norm.

In 2017, the Edo State Government took over the responsibility of collecting levies from non-government agents. They did this when they introduced the scratch card model of tax payment. This method is intended to be used in the informal and mobile sector particularly in the transport operators.

In order to implement this model, the State government trained Local government staff as revenue collectors. The training prepared them on their roles/guidelines for revenue collection through the use of scratch cards. They were also trained to understand how it would boost revenue collection as well as straighten grey areas.

With this new method of revenue collection, commercial bus drivers are expected to buy scratch cards worth N800 daily with an additional N200 payment on any other Local government ventured into. This is unlike previously when drivers paid agents of road unions and touts between 1500 to 1600  at different locations. Upon purchase, the pin from the scratch cards is then entered into a hand-held electronic payment device to validate it.

This method has significantly enhanced the internally generated revenue, simplified the tax collection process and improved accountability.

Most drivers interviewed admitted that the new system has sanitized the system. They also revealed that it has saved them from harassments from touts and agents of the road unions previously saddled with the responsibility of collecting the taxes.

Obaseki recently acknowledged that the revenue base of the state has risen with the new system as N500,000 was being realised from nine points in Oredo local government whereas only N45,000 was remitted from the nine points.

It would be recalled that on January 1st, 2017, Governor Godwin Obaseki outlawed the use of private revenue collectors in the state.

This accomplishment is truly one legacy Edo State will bequeath to the Nigerian Revenue Administration process and indeed other emerging economies of Africa.

Travel / These Are The 8 Advantages Of Using Public Transport While Traveling by AutoJoshNG: 1:57pm On Dec 04, 2019

There are various modes of transportation in Nigeria, but road transportation remains the most used of them all. This is so for so many reasons of which cost is among; road transportation is relatively cheaper for an average Nigerian. There are some Nigerians who have the resources to fly as they wish, but would rather use road transport.

For the purpose of this write-up, we would focus on road public transport. At the end of reading this, you’ll get to know reasons why you should use public transport while traveling.

Below are the 9 Reasons Why You Should Use Public Transport While Traveling

1. Saves you the stress of driving

There are categories of people who do not know driving is energy consuming especially if it’s manual transmission. Imagine pedaling a car for complete seven hours or more from Lagos to Enugu. It is much of a work when you look into it critically. If you decide to use public transport, you’ll save yourself the stress of driving.

2. You spend less

When you do the maths for what you’ll spend traveling from Lagos to Kano, you’ll find out you’ll save more if you should use public transport. Using your private car would be relatively costly as you’ll have to fill up your fuel tank several times.

3. You don’t bear the burden when the car spoils

Having a car breakdown on highway is one of the nightmares every driver would not want to encounter. These breakdowns have levels; some you may be able to fix immediately and continue your journey, and there are some that will take much time to fix. Breakdown such as tyre burst can be handled immediately, but something like blown head gasket can’t. The engine of the car must cool down properly before it can be worked on. When you use public transport, you can easily find your way out of the situation unlike when you’re driving.

4. You have time to do other things

When you use public transport, you may be able to kill two birds with a stone. You can be doing some other things as the driver is moving you to your destination. Some of these things include playing games, watching movies, surfing the net or any other form of entertainment. Some may use the time to make business calls and some other things like that. With public transport, you don’t have to watch the road.

5. You have the opportunity of meeting the love of your life

If you check well, a good number of relationships started in motor parks. Your case can’t be different. It is very possible to meet your better half in a park from where you can start shooting your shots. There are plenty things to talk about during the course of the journey; play your cards well. We may also say decreased driving increases social connections.

6. You’re almost free from police embarrassment

Using public transport gets you off the police radar, especially if you’re young and owns a car. Hardly will you face any harassment or embarrassment from the police when in a public transport. You don’t even get stopped when in a prestigious public transport company talk more of being asked to come down.

7. It is somewhat safer

Most of these renowned public transport have professionals as drivers and use cars that are regularly serviced and maintained for highway driving. Added to that, they know the best routes to take in most situations. They know the dangerous roads and the alternative routes to it. They know the best times to ply a given route and so on. On the other hand, you may not know all these when piloting your private car and you may end up in the wrong side of the equation. We don’t wish you that or pray for such though.
8. It reduces pollution

By moving more people just in one car, public transport tends to reduce air pollution. Imagine each person in a 14-seater bus traveling with their individual private vehicles; pollution will be much. Getting much people to travel in one car produces significantly less pollution.

9. It creates job

This may not be your business directly, but patronizing public transport companies is ab economic benefit to the community. These companies employ many people to keep the dice rolling. If people don’t patronize them, they will run out of business and this will lead to lots of persons losing their jobs.

This is the end. Do you think there is something we’re missing? Do well to tell us using the comment section.

Don’t forget to like, rate and share.

Travel / Under Flyover Bridges In Dubai Vs. Under Flyover Bridges In Lagos (PHOTOS) by AutoJoshNG: 3:18pm On Dec 03, 2019
When a flyover bridge is constructed, there are usually areas around them that are left unutilized. An example of such is the vacant space beneath the flyover.  These spaces are often either underutilized or used indiscriminately for parking of vehicles, etc.

These spaces under flyover bridges have immense potential. They can be developed into active space for public activities.  For instance, they can be transformed into recreational areas or well-organized car parks.

To achieve all these, the area under the flyover has to be illuminated, decorated with theme-based graffiti at certain spaces to create awareness for certain causes, etc.

These spaces can also be used to cultivate some vegetation or greenery. This will contribute to the ecology and environment and acts as a buffer to reduce air pollution as well as contribute to the aesthetics of the street in the day time.

In so many cities around the world, under flyover bridges has been used to achieve different public purposes.

In this article, Autojosh.com compares under some flyover bridges in Dubai, UAE and in Lagos, Nigeria.

Car Talk / See The Billionaire That Bought The James Bond Submarine Car For $1million by AutoJoshNG: 1:03pm On Dec 02, 2019
James Bond, the debonair Agent 007, in addition to the prettiest women, always gets the sleekest cars that are fitted with the most hi-tech espionage gadgetry. The Lotus Esprit S1 was one of those cars.

The original Lotus Esprit S1 is one of the most iconic cars used in a movie. The car featured in the 1977 James Bond movie, The Spy Who Loved Me.

The Lotus Esprit S1 ranks as one of the coolest James Bond cars ever. At the time the movie was produced, this car was way ahead of its time. The car could travel in the air, on the ground or as a submarine.

The submarine version of the Lotus Esprit S1 actually existed. The movie producers had a fully functional, real submarine built from the Lotus body shell made just for this film.

Since 1977 when it made its appearance in the movie, the car had been lost. However, it was rediscovered in 1989 after someone in Long Island paid $100 for a storage container and found the vehicle – wheel-less and dented – covered up by blankets.

In 2013, Billionaire tech entrepreneur and investor, Elon Musk, bought the iconic Lotus Esprit vehicle used in The Spy Who Loved Me.

Elon Musk bought the car at an auction in London for nearly $1 million ($997,000). His intention was to make the car's movie transformation from car to submarine a reality.

According to the Tesla founder, "It was amazing as a little kid in South Africa to watch James Bond in The Spy Who Loved Me drive his Lotus Esprit off a pier, press a button and have it transform into a submarine underwater,"

"I was disappointed to learn that it can't actually transform. What I'm going to do is upgrade it with a Tesla electric powertrain and try to make it transform for real.” he said.

The Lotus Esprit S1

The restored Lotus Esprit S1 has been occasionally exhibited at museums in the last 24 years, before being offered for auction in September 2013. It works as a submarine, but not as a car, as the auction listing explained:

According to the auction listing, "It moves forward via a bank of four propellers, with their electric motors being driven by batteries housed in a water-tight compartment. The articulated fins are adjusted with mechanical levers that are operated by its driver.

Underwater, the Lotus has a turning circle of around 20 feet. Its dive and climb performance is regulated by ballast tanks, and it has been described as "crisply argonautic".

The car is believed to have cost more than $100,000 to build in the 1970s.

Elon Musk holds South African, Canadian, and U.S. citizenship and is also the founder of PayPal and Tesla.

Tesla is accelerating the world's transition to sustainable energy with electric cars, solar panels and integrated renewable energy solutions.

Car Talk / Automobile Event Data Recorder (EDR) And Its Function by AutoJoshNG: 2:26pm On Nov 26, 2019
Your vehicle has computers that monitor the control of certain aspect of your vehicle. These computers assist in driving and maintaining optimal vehicle performance. Besides storing data useful for troubleshooting, there is a system to record data in a crash or a near crash event. This system is called an Event Data Recorder (EDR).

The EDR which is similar to flight recorders is sometimes referred to as automotive “black box”.

The SRS airbag sensor assembly contains the EDR. In a crash or a near crash event, this device may record some or all of the following information:

Engine speed
Vehicle speed
Whether the brake pedal was applied or not
To what extent the accelerator pedal was depressed
Position of the transmission selector lever
Whether the driver and front passenger wore seat belt or not
Driver’s seat position
SRS airbag deployment data

If your vehicle is equipped with a vehicle stability control system (VSC), it’s ECU may contain another EDR.

There are a variety of driving situations which include activating the VSC under which the VSC EDR will record certain information. The VSC EDR may record some or all of the following information:
