Politics / Governor Sanwo-Olu Inspecting Repair Works On Lagos Roads (Photos) by AutoJoshNG: 12:58pm On Oct 28, 2019
Unarguably, the condition of roads in Lagos State has never been as bad as it is today. Indeed, most roads in the State are in a terrific state of disrepair.

Everywhere you go to in the state, there is a sad tale to tell of the shambolic condition of roads there. Potholes of diverse sizes and numbers are prominent features of most roads in the state.

Meanwhile, the current administration in the State is sparing no effort to return Lagos roads to its former glory.

Furthermore, and in fairness to the Babajide Sanwo-Olu-led administration, most of the pothole-riddled roads were inherited from the previous administration. The current state of roads in Lagos is mainly due to little or no interest in road rehabilitation demonstrated by the Akinwumni Ambode-led administration.

Upon assumption of office, Governor Babajide Sanwo–Olu, signed his first Executive Order on Thursday 30th May 2019.

Part of the Executive Order directed that the Lagos State Public works Corporation (LSPWC) to commence patching and rehabilitation of bad roads to address the perennial problem of traffic in the State.

See also: State Of Emergency Declared On Lagos Roads By Gov. Sanwo-Olu
In obedience to the Executive Order, the LSPWC has commenced aggressive rehabilitation of roads around Lagos state.

Also, on October 14, 2019, Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu declared a state of emergency on road construction and rehabilitation across Lagos State. The Governor declared the state of emergency during a meeting with road construction contractors.

In a statement, the Governor said, “We totally understand the plight of all Lagosians regarding the state of our roads. We are fully aware of our responsibility, and we do not plan to fall short of it.”

“Though the current weather has not been favorable, we are putting together measures to ease the burden of commuters”, the governor said.

Currently, extensive rehabilitation works are ongoing on some major roads in the State.

Some days ago, Gov. Sanwo-Olu went round inspecting some of the roads being worked upon to assess the quality of work and materials used.

Amongst the roads inspected by the Governor are Ahmadu Bello way and Bonny Camp axis.

Accompanying him on the tour was the Special Adviser on Works and Infrastructure, Engineer Aramide Adeyoye.

Car Talk / Hondas And Other Cars With Failed Ball Joint On The Roads (Photos) by AutoJoshNG: 2:44pm On Oct 27, 2019

Ball joint failure is one of the faults that scares Nigerians away from buying car brands like Honda. Surprisingly, this ball joint failure issue is not an issue faces by just Honda cars; any other car can be in such condition.

However, everything boils down to maintenance and paying attention to your car. The mechanic that you take your car to also has a cut of the pie. Some mechanics do not do the needful. Some will just not check the car properly, but eventually, will tell you nothing is wrong. You end up taking their word at your own peril.

This is a very common fault in Honda. It is one of the major reasons most Nigerians frown at buying Honda products especially the Accord. A lot of people will tell you they are not ready to experience the “Honda Surprise”. But as we have said earlier, it is not just a fault in Honda cars.

Travel / Re: Lagos BRT And LBSL Buses: Know The Difference by AutoJoshNG: 5:05pm On Oct 23, 2019
SBLS

The LBSL buses are a set of high-capacity buses that operate in Lagos metropolis. The buses are operated by the Lagos Bus Services Limited (LBSL).

The Lagos Bus Services Limited (LBSL) is a company that was set up by the Akinwumi Ambode administration.  The company was incorporated on 1 August 2016 as a transport asset acquisition, operations, and advisory services company.

President Mohammadu Buhari formally inaugurated the LBSL bus operations on April 24, 2019.

LBSL buses are strictly not permitted to use the dedicated BRT lanes in Lagos. Therefore, they are not BRT buses.

Some infrastructure were provided for the smooth operations of the LBSL buses. They include bus shelters, lay-bys, bus flags, terminals, and depots at various strategic points along the routes.

Currently, LBSL bus services are deployed using the Brazilian-built Marcopolo buses.

Note: on some of the LBSL-operated buses, the word "BRT" is emblazoned on their chassis. This does not make them BRT buses. BRT is a mass transit system, not a type of bus.

Travel / Lagos BRT And LBSL Buses: Know The Difference by AutoJoshNG: 5:05pm On Oct 23, 2019
In this article, we will throw some light on some high capacity buses used for mass transit in Lagos State.

This has become necessary because of a popular misconception that the recently bought mass transit buses used in Lagos State are also BRT buses.

BRT

Bus Rapid Transit otherwise referred to as "BRT" is a mass transit system that employs dedicated lanes. The use of the dedicated lanes enables the BRT buses to avoid traffic – and by extension, ensure shorter duration of journeys.

The BRT system is also considered a lucrative venture for its operators, as return time is shorter because of the use of the dedicated lanes.

The Lagos BRT

The Lagos BRT service was inaugurated on 17 March 2008.

Currently, a private company - Primero Transport Service Limited, is the sole operator of the Lagos BRT scheme. It operates on the Ikorodu-Mile 12-CMS BRT corridor.

BRT buses are the only buses that are permitted to use the dedicated BRT lanes in the state.

The Lagos BRT buses are in diverse brands such as Ashok Leyland, Yutong. The current BRT buses are blue in colour.

In Lagos state, the BRT scheme is regulated by the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA).

Politics / Re: Ambode 800 Buses Vs. Sanwo-Olu 800 Buses (PHOTOS) by AutoJoshNG: 1:17pm On Oct 23, 2019
Babajide Sanwo-Olu

Babajide Sanwo-Olu was sworn in as the Governor of Lagos State on Wednesday, May 29, 2019.

He expressed enormous enthusiasm in confronting the traffic challenge in the state.

On June 3, 2019,  Sanwo-Olu donated 35 brand new high-capacity shuttle buses to the Lagos State Civil Service.

On October 2019, just like Ambode, Governor Sanwo-Olu acquired over 800 new buses.

In a series of tweet, the governor declared, "Beyond road construction, we have started expanding the bus rapid transit system and gradually reducing the danfo buses on the roads. I am excited to announce that we have purchased over 800 buses to add to the existing BRT fleet expanding to more routes. We are supportive of private investment in transportation that is non-exploitative".

BRT Vs. Non-BRT

The 800 buses bought by Governor Sanwo-Olu are intended for BRT operations. This is unlike the over 800 buses bought by Ambode. The cost of acquiring the buses is yet to become public knowledge.

The acquisition and donation of the buses to a private transport company by the Sanwo-Olu have come under criticism.

Some analysts wondered why the Governor, who claims he met an empty treasury, embarked on such charity.

They also queried the sense in donating the buses to a private company when they could have been donated to the State government-operated Lagos Bus Services Limited (LBSL).

The donation of the buses came 2 weeks after Governor Sanwo-Olu sent a letter to the state Assembly to get approval for a fixed rate bond of N100 billion from the capital market and an internal loan of N150 billion.

Babajide Sanwo-Olu is the 15th Governor of Lagos State.

Politics / Ambode 800 Buses Vs. Sanwo-Olu 800 Buses (PHOTOS) by AutoJoshNG: 1:17pm On Oct 23, 2019
Lagos State,  the economic hub of Nigeria, is notorious for a terrifying road traffic.

Every day, over 8 million people, commute in approximately 5 million vehicles cram into a tiny network of just 9,100 roads.

This contributes to the reason why Lagosians spend an average of 30 hours in traffic each week -- or 1,560 hours annually.

Successive Governments in the State have tried to find a lasting solution to the mass transit challenges in the state. One of such proffered solution is the provision of comfortable high-capacity mass transit buses.

In this article, we will be highlighting the efforts made by former Governor Akinwunmi Ambode and the incumbent Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu in the provision of these mass transit buses.

800 Buses: Ambode Vs. Sanwo-Olu

Former Governor Akinwunmi Ambode

Former Governor Akinwunmi Ambode was known for his zeal towards the improvement of transportation infrastructure in Lagos state.

In May 2016, he donated 50 new buses for BRT operations in the state.

According to him, the donation was intended to cushion any effect that the removal of subsidy and subsequent increase in the petrol price will have on Lagosians.

Primero Transport Services Limited – a privately-own company and the sole BRT operator in Lagos - was the beneficiary of Ambode's largess.

According to Fola Tinubu, the Managing Director, Primero Transport Limited, "the governor’s gesture would not only cushion the effect of fuel price, but it would also stabilize transport fares".

In November 2017, the Ambode-led government announced that it would be injecting 800 new buses in two months; with the aim of making available 5,000 buses in 24 months. And true to the promise, the buses were introduced.

On April 24, 2019, President Buhari formally launched the 800 brand new buses.

The 800 buses acquired by Ambode are not part of the Lagos BRT scheme. Instead, they were placed under the management of the Lagos Bus Service Limited (LBSL).

Lagos Bus Services Limited (LBSL)

The Lagos Bus Service Limited (LBSL) is an agency of the Lagos State government that was incorporated in August 2016. It was set up as a transport asset acquisition, operations, and advisory services company.

The infrastructure provided for the smooth operations of the LBSL buses includes bus shelters, lay-bys, bus flags, terminals, and depots at various strategic points along the routes.

The LBSL-supervised buses are not part of the Lagos BRT scheme. As a matter of fact, they are not permitted to use the dedicated BRT lanes in Lagos.

Governor Akinwunmi Ambode failed in his second term attempt. Thus, he was hindered from achieving his ambition of injecting 5000 new buses into the system.

He is currently under probe by the Lagos State House of Assembly. The ex-governor is being investigated by the parliamentarians for acquiring 820 buses without their consent. He reportedly spent N45Billion in purchasing the buses.

Politics / Should Lagos State Government Keep Buying Buses For A Private BRT Operator? by AutoJoshNG: 1:33pm On Oct 21, 2019
Last week, the Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, announced that his government had donated over 800 new buses to the BRT operator in the state.

This is the second time the State government would be using public funds to acquire buses for the sole operator of the Lagos BRT scheme.

On May 2016, the former governor Akinwunmi Ambode-led administration donated 50 new buses for BRT operations in the state. This happened after the state government disengaged a LAGBUS-operated BRT franchise in 2016. Before the LAGBUS-supervised franchise was disengaged from BRT operations, it had over 36 franchisees with hundreds of buses.

Primero Transport Service Ltd – a privately-held company – was then made the sole operator of BRT in the state.

Some schools of thought wonder at the rationale behind LASG continuous largess to a private company.

Furthermore, there are also doubts about the sincerity of the LASG to rid the state of the notorious danfos. This is so because far more BRT buses are needed beyond the 800 recently donated by the Sanwo-Olu-led government to rid the state of danfo. And the easiest way to achieve this is to either end the current monopoly or encourage a BRT franchise scheme.

Unanswered Questions

What is the point in encouraging a BRT operation monopoly when the sole licensee has consistently demonstrated a lack of capacity to handle the huge demand for the service?

Does the Lagos state Government lack other important projects to invest tax-payers money into?

Why is the government or Primero not exploring options of a franchise scheme, and thus allow other private investors in the BRT projects? (This will clearly save the government Billions of Naira it keeps doling out to support the BRT operator).

What stops Primero Transport Service Ltd from obtaining a bank facility to acquire more buses with the state government standing as a guarantor?

How long will the BRT monopoly of Primero Transport Service Ltd last?

Also, why are these tax-payers monies doled out to buy buses for BRT operations not used to conclude the construction of the Oshodi to Abuelegba BRT corridor?

Where are the members of the Lagos State House of Assembly in all of these? Why have the parliamentarians turned a blind eye to the suspicious BRT monopoly in the state and the regular spoonfeeding of a private enterprise by LASG using public funds?

The Lagos BRT scheme was inaugurated on 17 March 2008. In its first year, the BRT transported an average of 200,000 passengers per day. In 2012, it carried 51 million passengers, averaging around 140,000 a day.

The Lagos BRT system is regulated by the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA).

Young entrepreneur and CEO of Hair By Wanneka, Nwanneka Nkumah, popularly known as Mizwanneka, earlier today announced the acquisition of the 2020 model of the Mercedes-Benz G63 AMG.

Mizwanneka announced her latest automobile acquisition on Instagram. She captioned the post thus:

“:Touch down lasgidi what a way to end a year of hard work thank you Jesus for your grace. Missed it for my birthday, but finally, y’all welcome my 2020 G63 when you drive the future welcome home baby ”

The 28-year-old mother of two kids started from selling just hair and creating a target market for her brand before expanding into owning an exotic restaurant. She started her journey in business in 2013.

The 2020 Mercedes-AMG G63 is the most polarizing car in AMG’s lineup. It’s basically a box on wheels, with looks that haven’t changed much since the late 1970s. It even has the sounds to match.

In addition to that burbling 4.0-liter twin-turbo V-8, the G63’s doors have been engineered to make a wonderful, solid clap upon being shut. It’s incredibly satisfying to listen to, especially in person.

The Mercedes-Benz G63 AMG is estimated to be worth about N120m after shipping and clearing in Nigeria.

Car Talk / Change Your Name, Twitter User To Innoson (PHOTO) by AutoJoshNG: 12:46pm On Oct 18, 2019
Some days ago, the Innoson Vehicle Manufacturing (IVM) exhibited signs that it is considering rebranding with a new logo. A logo was proposed to the company by a certain Osuolale Farouq – a brand identity designer.

The company later subjected the adoption of the proposed logo to a public vote.

Following the public attention that the proposed logo enjoyed, another fan of the Nigerian vehicle brand (with twitter name @Nedunkem) has also proposed a new, and perhaps, and more befitting name for the carmaker.

According to the proposal, ‘Innoson Vehicle Manufacturing’ is an incomplete phrase. It went further to propose some names. See the tweet below.

Reacting to the proposal, official twitter handlers retweeted the proposal, and subjected the proposal to an online poll.

The tweet requesting for nomination a prefered name went thus:

“Which name is better? Innoson Vehicle Manufacturing (IVM) and Innoson Vehicle Manufacturing Plant (IVMP)

Like for IVM Retweet for IVMP”

So which do you prefer?

Nairaland / General / A Comprehensive List Of Lagos State Emergency Numbers by AutoJoshNG: 6:27pm On Oct 17, 2019
These numbers are for different Lagos State Governmental agencies and departments.

In case of any emergency, call the corresponding agency.

Universal Emergency Telephone Number

Some Lagosians are not particularly impressed by the absence of a single shortcode emergency number.

Emergency telephone numbers are short. They are mostly three-digit numbers to make it easy for remembrance,

In many countries, the public switched telephone network has a single emergency telephone number (sometimes known as the universal emergency telephone number or the emergency services number) that allows a caller to contact local emergency services for assistance. The emergency number differs from country to country; it is typically a three-digit number so that it can be easily remembered and dialled quickly. Some countries have a different emergency number for each of the different emergency services; these often differ only by the last digit.

If you have ever called Lagos emergency numbers before, share your experience with us.

How effective are these numbers and what is your experience with these numbers?

Travel / You Can't Use Riders Permit As Your Drivers License - FRSC by AutoJoshNG: 5:05pm On Oct 17, 2019
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has clarified that the Riders Permit does not serve the same function as the National Drivers’ License.
made this clarification earlier today.

FRSC made this know owing to the growing rate at which tricycle and motorcycle operators mistake the 2 documents. Riders Permit are issued by respective states.

According to FRSC, the riders permit can never be used in the place of the NDL. In a statement, the Corps Public Education Officer, Bisi Kazeem, the NDL said that the NDL is a national security document. It embodies the driver’s information as contained in the national drivers' database.

All over the world, Drivers License is the only document that gives a trained, qualified and certified driver the right to drive on the road.

The idea behind NDL is to ensure that every driver on the road have their information captured in the database, for the enhancement of security of all road users and for intelligence gathering among the law enforcement agencies. The relevance of the document not only as a means of identification cannot be overemphasized.

The Corps Marshal, Dr Boboye Oyeyemi wishes to caution all operators who patronise drivers permit as an alternative for the national drivers license to desist from such henceforth to avoid arrest and penalties.

This platform is to sensitise all motorcycle and tricycle operators who hitherto did not know the difference between the NDL and the Drivers Permit to ensure that they go ahead to procure their licenses as violators will be penalised.
