A truck conveying excreta has fallen on Odo Iyalaro Bridge, Lagos state. Unfortunately, it spilled its content on the road.

Only an imagination of the smell oozing out as a result of this accident is enough to give one much concern. It definitely will be a horrible accident scene.

Rapid Response Squad (RSS) officers are assisting in controlling the traffic on the bridge. According to reports we were able to obtain, large portion of the road is covered with excreta.

Art, Graphics & Video / This Man Painted A White Wall To Look Like A Bus (photos) by AutoJoshNG: 12:16pm On Aug 22, 2019
Painting a wall to look like a bus is not something you see everyday. It required a creative mind to actualize such. Creativity is a phenomenon whereby something new and somehow valuable is formed. This painting right here is part of this creativity we are talking about.

The painter painted an ordinary wall to become a colourful dilapidated bus with shadow. Who would have thought of that?

This first picture below shows what the wall looked like before it was painted.

Below is a picture after the painting was done. The painter did a very amazing job because it really looks like a bus. The shadow of the painted bus is something else.

Here is a before and after picture. This merged picture will make you appreciate the painting the more.

We say a very big kudos to the painter; he did a wonderful job.

Car Talk / List Of 24 Cars You Should Never Buy By Nigerian Twitter User (Photos) by AutoJoshNG: 11:18am On Aug 22, 2019

A Nigerian whose moniker on Twitter is @Otunbakush1 listed twenty four (24) cars Nigerians “should never buy” because their problems can’t be fixed except when you take it back to the company.

In this post, we’re going to quote what he wrote on Twitter. He stated the problems the various cars came with.

NB: Please, what you’re about to read is the opinion of @Otunbakush on Twitter and not that of Autojosh.

Below are the 24 cars he listed and the reasons why you should never buy them.

1. Land Rover 3 (LR3):

First on the list of cars you should never buy is the LAND ROVER 3 (LR3), about 27million pieces was recalled months after production, and trust me millions Don enter 9ja.

It might look rugged but, the issues, Transmission, engines, brakes, electrical and so on, it’s can go off anytime on motion, and u will need a mechanic to open d engine right on the spot. The brakes ain’t trust worthy cos it fails anytime, oil leaking into the engine errors.

You will keep visiting the mechanic, and dey will keep collecting money from you, this errors can only be fixed by Landrover themselves, less I forget, d brake disk, and lining has sensors, and dey fail repeatedly, so u fit Match brake and ẹ no catch…you Don die be that.

2. 2015 Mercedes Benz C300:

No 2, Mercedes Benz C300 ( 2015)

All model of this car was recalled due to fire, you can park and it will still catch fire, u can be on motion and it will catch fire, reasons?, fuel leaking into d engine, no Nigerian mechanic can fix it, you have to return it back to d company.

3. 2005 Nissan Pathfinder:

No 3 Nissan Pathfinder 2005
Transmission problem, you can ask anybody using this car, dey have changed gear box like 1million times, major figures of this suv was recalled, failed alot of test, but still found its way to Nigeria, gear can hook OK motion and can lead to accident.

Airbag problem, you can be driving, if u enter big porthole, d airbags will activate and boom on ur face, almost all of this car accident is caused by the airbag pulling on drivers face, avoid it at all cost.

4. 2002/2003 Nissan Xterra:

No 4, Nissan Xterra 2002/2003

7. 2010 BMW X6:

BMW X6 2010 MODEL

Now let’s focus on electrical problem, once the problem starts u will know, ur dashboard will be messed up, car won’t move again, now, it will affect d engine.

Since it’s electrical, it sends light back into d engine switch and damages d major part of it, u will need to replace that engine, now 9ja rewire go just do shady work, and dat thing will repeat itself…so don’t buy it.

8. Volkswagen Touareg:

Volks Touareg, this suv’s problem is legendary and it’s one of the top cars you should never buy, I will just outline d major ones,

anonimi:

Is there anything going on about classic cars?
Most of the cars here are expensive toys that are commonplace in countries where everyone is comfortable, if not super rich, with the basics that many Lagosians hustle to have such as electricity, good roads, metro, health clinics, water etc.
I hope that you can share with an auto show for classic cars in Nigeria. That would be quite interesting.
Cheers.

There should be a drive show for classic cars in October.

Car Talk / 5 Ways Kids Can Get Hurt When Inside A Car by AutoJoshNG: 5:55am On Aug 21, 2019

Kids are known to be very curious. They would always want to try out things that adults wouldn’t even think of. Their brains are not that developed to perceive danger so they can easily be victims.

When kids are in a car, anything can happen in a blink of an eye. Due to this fact, kids should be watched out for at all times. The right safety measures should be taken and assumptions should not be tolerated.

These are the ways kids can get hurt inside a car even to the extent of losing their lives.

1. Opening the door while the car is in motion:

This is another way kids get hurt in cars. When a car is in motion, the doors are meant to be closed. When it is accidentally opened especially by kids, it can cause damage to the car or even harm the child.

Endeavour to use child safety lock when next you have kids in your car. It is very easy to activate; doesn’t require any rocket science.

2. Sticking out head through the door windows:

This is another wrong thing kids like to do. This is easy for them especially when they are not restricted in the vehicle. Sticking out head or any other part of their body can be a death trap. If they are lucky enough, they will sustain minor injuries.

When the kids are not restricted, endeavour to keep the windows wound up to a reasonable extent where they can’t stick out their body parts. Make sure the power windows are locked from the driver’s side too so they don’t operate the windows as they wish.

3. Power window injury:

Kids can hurt themselves with the power windows of your vehicle. You may be wondering how possible this might be. Many kids have been injured when a power window closes to their hands, wrists or finger. Some kids in some cases have been strangled by power windows.

As pointed out in number 3, ensure the kids don’t have control over the power windows. The person who has control over the power windows should also ensure the kids are safe when they operate it.

4. Heatstroke:

This is the outcome of leaving kids in a hot vehicle. It is a non-crash related fatality among children.

The heat in the car will bring about body temperature rise which could possibly lead to death if nothing is done on time.

5. Seat belt entanglement:

Kids could get entangled if he/she pulls the seat belt out and wrap it around the neck, wrist or waist.

Please, always ensure you keep kids safe in and around your car.

Did we miss any? Let us know using the comment section.

We will also love to hear your worst experiences with kids in or around your car.

Car Talk / 4 Common Problems Honda Users In Nigeria Complain About by AutoJoshNG: 4:06pm On Aug 20, 2019

Honda produces wonderful cars that are very pleasing to drive. The comfortable seats, the spacious leg room, the mind-blowing stereo, the balance and stability while driving, are some of the things those that have driven Honda cars can’t easily forget.

When you see a Honda enthusiast, don’t be surprised he/she will give you a thousand and one reasons why you should own a Honda.

Even though Honda cars are packed with all these goodies, it can as well at some point develop issues; just like every other car. This could be mechanical or electrical faults which most times seem inherent to the brand. But it largely depends on usage and maintenance culture.

We took it upon ourselves to point out the some of the problems Honda users often complain about as they use their cars.

These are the most common Honda problems Nigerian users complain about

1. Ball joint failure:

This is a very common fault in Honda. It is one of the major reasons most Nigerians frown at buying Honda products especially the Accord. A lot of people will tell you they are not ready to experience the “Honda Surprise”.

Surprisingly, this can be avoided if you pay close attention to your car. Read our post on “3 Symptoms of a Bad or Failing Ball Joint” so you don’t fall a victim someday.

2. Transmission failure:

This is another issue Honda users complain about. At a certain mileage, people complain how their transmission suddenly starts misbehaving. Symptoms like delayed gear change, surging of vehicle, grinding noise in the transmission, gear slip etc. This problem most times lead to complete overhaul or total replacement of the transmission.

Some times, flushing off the old transmission fluid and replacing with fresh one can do the magic of making your car function properly. Don’t fail to read our post on “5 Signs That Indicate Your Transmission Needs To Be Flushed” you may find it helpful someday.

3. Oil and coolant leaks:

Honda users of certain models complain about oil and coolant leaks. Engine oil leaks externally or coolants make their way into the combustion chamber due to faulty head gasket. Replacing the head gasket solved this problem for most Honda users.

4. Failure of Power Window Switch:

On Certain Honda car models, a faulty power window switch can cause the power windows to work or not work periodically.

Do you own a Honda and has been experiencing a fault not listed here? kindly let us know using the comment section. We would also appreciate if you tell us how you solved the problem.

Travel / Lagos Ports Are Not Congested — STOAN by AutoJoshNG: 1:24pm On Aug 19, 2019

The Seaport Terminal Operators Association of Nigeria (STOAN) says contrary to widely held notion, the Lagos Port Complex, Apapa and the Tin Can Island Port Complex, both in Lagos, are not congested.

In a statement it issued weekend, STOAN said both ports are operating at less than 70% capacity.

The association said the major challenges facing the ports are the road access, which have become severely dilapidated.

STOAN Spokesman, Bolaji Akinola, who issued the statement weekend, said, “It is important to correct the understanding of the public about the ports. The hinterland infrastructure leading to the ports in Lagos, namely the roads, are at breaking points. The ports are not congested and are not at breaking points.

“Most of the terminals in the two ports are operating below capacity. The busiest terminals are operating at less than 70% at the yard and 60% at berth. So there is no port congestion anywhere as of today.”

Akinola said the ports in Lagos have capacity to handle beyond the volume of cargo they are handling at the moment if government pays attention to the issue of dilapidated port access roads as well as put an end to the manual handling of cargo clearing processes deployed by the Nigeria Customs Service.

He said port operation is not about the size of the port only, but about the efficiency of the connecting facilities around the port.

The STOAN Spokesman also said ports in other parts of the country are not immune to the challenges of bad road.

He said the Onitsha River Port, recently constructed by the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA), is not functional because of bad roads.

He called on the Federal Government to embark on “urgent comprehensive repairs” of the roads leading to all the ports in the country, especially the Lagos ports. He also tasked the government on the provision of functional truck parks in Apapa to stop trucks from parking on the roads and impeding the flow of traffic.

Politics / Top 7 Cars Used By Nigerian Politicians by AutoJoshNG: 7:02pm On Aug 17, 2019

Nigerian Politicians are among those that use the best cars in the country. It’s no news Nigerian politicians are among the highest paid in the world. Other than that, the amount of public funds the bad eggs loot makes them extremely rich. They can easily splash them on cars without even noticing something went off their bank.

For instance, each member of the Nigerian Senate earns up to ₦162 million ($450,000) annually in allowances, and ₦9 million ($25,000) as basic salary. This will go a long way in getting them a very good everyday car of their choice.

You are about to see the various cars associated with our Nigerian politicians. This could be their official car or their personal regular car.

The top 7 cars used by Nigerian Politicians are:

1. Mercedes Benz S-Class:

This is the most loves Mercedes Benz class by our Politicians. The first citizen of Nigeria and Commander-in-Chief of Armed forces also has a Mercedes S-Class as his official car. Precisely a 2019 Armoured Mercedes Maybach S560. Other top politicians in Nigeria uses Mercedes S-Class as their official car.

The Mercedes-Maybach S 560 (& the S 650), the most popular sedan in the fleet of World leaders, is perhaps one of the most elegant way to be chauffeured around the Country .

This should tell you there is something special about the Mercedes S-Class.

2.Toyota Landcruiser Prado:

This is the bread and butter of most Nigerian politicians. There is a very high probability you’ll see this car in their fleet. It’s one of the most owned vehicle of most politicians.

This could be due to the reliability and ruggedness of the car. It basically can go anywhere especially the roads our government has failed to rehabilitate. The Toyota Landcruiser Prado has the space they need and it has served well all these years.

3. Lexus LX 570:

The Lexus LX570 is closely related to Toyota Landcruiser Prado; the both are under the Toyota umbrella. But when it come to luxury, the Lexus takes the crown. The Lexus LX 570 is an SUV which has always stood out amongst many. Aside politicians, Nigerian pastors, celebrities and high-profiled elites seem to have love for this SUV. Just like the cousin Landcruiser Prado, it is reliable and rugged enough to take you to any part of the country.

The Lexus LX 570 is the official car of some governors in Nigeria.

4. Range Rover:

The British Engineered brand made it to the list. The Land Rover Range Rover is the most common brand of the British origin used by our politicians, It is even the official vehicle of some state governors like Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos who uses a Range Rover Sentinel. Governor Ugwuanyi of Enugu State also uses a Range Rover Autobiograpghy. We are talking about reinforced Range Rovers and not the ordinary ones.

The Range Rover SUVs always stand out wherever they find themselves.

5. Toyota Hilux:

This list won’t be complete if we fail to mention the almighty Toyota Hilux. This car is on the good book of most politicians and hardly will you see a convoy without a Hilux.

The Toyota Hilux has been around the corner for many years now and it seem not to be going out any time soon. Nigerian politicians always use this car to transport their escorts whenever they are on road trips. It can be said to be the errand car of most politicians. They are used basically to run errands.

6. Lexus GX 460/470:

This car is another hot cake. This SUV can’t be looked for in cities like Lagos and Abuja; you’ll see many of them gracing the roads.

7. Mercedes Gwagon:

The boxy German machine can’t afford to be miss this list.

Travel / Shanghai Port China: World’s Best-connected Port by AutoJoshNG: 10:29am On Aug 09, 2019

China’s Shanghai port took the title of the world’s best-connected port, according to United Nations Conference on Trade and Development’s (UNCTAD) 2019 ranking, released on August 7.

The Chinese port garnered a connectivity score of 134 points, followed by the ports of Singapore with 124.63 points, Pusan in Korea with 114.45 points and China’s Ningbo with 114.35 points. The index is set at 100 for the best-connected port in 2006, which was Hong Kong, China.

Besides the Asian ports, the other ports on the top 10 list are those of Antwerp (94 points) in Belgium and Rotterdam (93 points) in the Netherlands. None of the ports in the top 20 list are from Africa, Latin America, North America or Australasia.

“A container port’s performance is a critical factor that can determine transport costs and, by extension, trade competitiveness,” said UNCTAD’s director of technology and logistics, Shamika N. Sirimanne.

Efficient and well-connected container ports enabled by frequent and direct shipping services are key to minimizing trade costs and fostering sustainable development, Sirimanne added.

The data further reveals that investments by shipping lines can attract additional services. Piraeus (Greece), operated by COSCO from China, for example, has become the best-connected port in the Mediterranean in 2019, according to the report.

In Africa, both geography and port reforms emerged as critical factors. The best-connected countries in Africa are those at its corners – Morocco, Egypt and South Africa. Western Africa has relatively low connectivity because it doesn’t lie at the crossroads of major north-south or east-west shipping routes.

Mombasa (Kenya) and Dar es Salaam (Tanzania) connect Burundi, Rwanda and Uganda to overseas markets through dedicated corridors, but they remain highly congested.

“Low connectivity makes merchandize trade costly and uncompetitive. Many small island developing states (SIDS) face a vicious cycle where low trade volumes discourage investments in better maritime transport connectivity.”

Car Talk / 5 Major Car Brands That Are Now Defunct by AutoJoshNG: 8:59am On Aug 09, 2019
There are some cars which were on road not too long ago but are nowhere to be found in recent times. This is because some of these brands went defunct and discontinued the production of cars.

A perfect example is the “Hummer Jeep” (as Nigerians called it) that used to reign back in the days. Most wealthy men then had this in their fleet. Along the line, the game changed which made the brand very uncommon in our Nigerian roads.

Due to one reason or the other, these brands stopped production of their cars. Let’s take a look at some of the brands that died and the reason for their deaths.

1. Hummer:

Hummer was a brand of trucks and SUVs under General Motors. It was founded in January 22, 1992 and was first marketed that same year.

On June 1, 2009, as a part of the General Motors bankruptcy announcement, the company revealed that the Hummer brand would be discontinued and in May 24, 2010, it went defunct. This was due to Hummer’s indecent fuel economy, safety concerns and the restructuring of General Motors.

2. Plymouth:

Plymouth was founded in July 7, 1928. It was a brand of automobiles based in the United States and produced by the Chrysler Corporation. Plymouth was eventually dissolved in 2001.

Putting the Plymouth name on other Chrysler products, otherwise known as “badge engineering” ruined its identity.

3. Pontiac:

Pontiac was another brand owned, made and sold by General Motors. It was incorporated in 1926 and was one of the most iconic brands in American history.

In October 31, 2010, General Motors dissolved the brand. Safety concerns contributed to denting the sports and road image of the brand.

4. Scion:

Scion was a brand under Toyota which started up in 2002 and was aimed at young buyers. The brand performed poorly on sales which led to the dissolution of the brand in 2016.

5. Studebaker:

The Studebaker was an automobile manufacturer that was founded in 1852. The Studebaker brothers came to America as German immigrants and were blacksmiths by trade. They produced quality automobiles throughout the 1940s, but price wars between General Motors and Ford devastated them in 1953.

Which of these defunct car brands would you bring back to life if you had the powers?

Let’s hear from you in the comment section.

Car Talk / The Official And Ceremonial Vehicles Of 45 World Leaders (photos) by AutoJoshNG: 12:30pm On Aug 06, 2019

The official and ceremonial vehicles used by world leaders are not just casual vehicles; they are special.

Transporting the leader of a nation is not an easy task. For security reasons, incorporating high level of technological sophistication such as bullet and bombproof is very essential. The car as well has to be comfortable enough for the leader at least to ease off the stress accumulated from the office.

This graphics we obtained from Title Max shows the official states vehicles used by various world leaders.

You’ll get to see the Mercedes S-Class of President Buhari of Nigeria which is escorted by 10 cars and 10 motorcycles. You’ll also be amazed to see the 1987 Volkswagen Beetle driven by former Uruguayan president, Josè Mujica.

You’ll also see that Mercedes is by far the most popular brand used for ceremonial transportation of world leaders. Countries such as China, Sweden and France use car brands based within their borders.

Some nations like it old school; they opt for vintage vehicles.

Car Talk / Coscharis Motors Activates The Rolls-royce Black Badge In Nigeria (photos) by AutoJoshNG: 7:52am On Aug 05, 2019

Rolls-Royce Black Badge Ghost Series 2 Ride and Drive.

With a bolder presence and a more potent performance, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars Lagos (Coscharis Motors Limited) has introduced the Rolls-Royce Black Badge into the Nigerian autosphere. The Black Badge comes with elegant charisma, darkened chrome elements, carbon fibre accents and enhanced performance.

To mark its introduction, Coscharis Motors Limited which is the exclusive franchise representative of Rolls Royce Motor Cars in Nigeria organised a Ride and Drive event. AutoJosh and other media representatives were invited and given the opportunity to have a test drive. This experience is good enough to make anyone forget all the problems of this world and only think about their investment portfolios, the next vacation and the scoop of gelato they had with friends last night in Monaco.

The event took place on a Saturday morning at an exclusive highbrow estate on the Island in Lagos. This provided a secure and serene environment to allow us enjoy the car to the fullest while attracting the attention of residents who fell in love with the Black Badge at first sight.

According to Mr Abiona Babarinde, The General Manager, Marketing and Corporate Communications of Coscharis Group, what Rolls Royce Motor Cars Lagos has done is to bring our showroom to our typical Rolls Royce customers which are high net worth individuals (HNIs) while our media partners experience the brand at the same time. As we speak, we already have a potential prospect checking out the car and this tells you the strategy behind the selection of this venue.

During the ride and drive session one of the media representatives asked a question that may be on your mind right now. What differentiates the Black Badge from the standard Rolls-Royce? she asked. The major differences are the black Spirit of Ecstasy, carbon fibre wheels, blacked out front grille, badges, boot lid and exhaust tips as well as an improved performance.

The Black Badge appeals to young and emerging HNIs who have a taste for absolute luxury while seeking a more athletic and sportier ride. The interior is lushed with exquisite wood and exquisite leather that subtly screams and smells like opulence. The test car has the Purple Silk interior contrasted with black.

As we closed the doors with the push of a button, the double glazed glass and well insulated body frame immediately isolated the exterior noise and cocooned us in a luxurious cabin with pin drop silence. This car is actually therapeutic and can lower your blood pressure as the revised cushion and sporting air suspension absorbed all the imperfections on our roads to the extent that you'll think you're lying on your king size bed in a 5-star hotel. The massage seats also gave us a spa treatment as we listened to the purity of the 18 speaker ultra high end bespoke sound system.

The Rolls-Royce Black badge is powered by a twin turbo 6.6litre V12 engine that produces 603hp and 840Nm of torque (40hp and 60Nm more than the standard Ghost) with an impressive 0-100kph in 4.5 seconds. It features an 8 speed GPS guided automatic transmission, 21 inch wheels, a 12.3 inch infotainment display, the black badge Infinity Symbol, mirrors on the C-Pillar, refrigerator amongst other features.

Fuel consumption is 17.4 mpg (16.2 l/100km).

The Black Badge come with 4 years regional warranty.

See more photos and video below and watch out for our upcoming post that will feature the detailed features and specifications of the Rolls Royce Black Badge.

Travel / Bad Roads: Lagos Intensifies Efforts To Fix Potholes by AutoJoshNG: 10:38pm On Aug 03, 2019

The Lagos State Public Works Corporation, LSPWC, has urged Lagos residents to be patient as it doubles efforts to fix potholes and ensure roads remain motorable as we approach the last quarter of the year.

The General Manager of the Corporation, Engr. Olufemi Daramola disclosed this yesterday during a chat with news correspondents on the activities of the Corporation since mid-June 2019.

He said LSPWC is fully aware of the situation of roads in the State and efforts are in top gear to alleviate the discomfort commuters encounter on some of the bad roads, emphasising that the Corporation is determined to rehabilitate all damaged roads in furtherance of the Executive Order of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

He explained that palliatives with boulders and crushed stones were done at Oke-Afa, Isolo, Ejigbo, Ikotun-Ijegun axis, Oba Sekumade and Bayeku Road at Ikorodu, Ahmadu Bello Way and other similar strategic roads, adding that the Corporation also graded Ikorodu Road and Mile 12 inward Ketu on Tuesday to reduce travel time and ameliorate the trouble commuters experience on the axis pending a permanent solution.

While noting that challenging road situations ranging from potholes, isolated potholes, craters and failed portions of roads across all the Local Governments preceded his assumption of office, he revealed that a lot of resources to repair non-functional equipment and plants have been invested by the present administration.

Daramola assured residents that the State government is working hard to ensure that pot-holes on major roads are drastically reduced or totally eliminated, and in cases where they occur, the response rate by the Agency would be faster, stressing that some of the roads have outlived their life span.

The General Manager also acknowledged that the number of bad roads in Lagos is high and must be done in phases according to the level of importance, emphasising that the Corporation has a strong mandate to get rid of potholes
in the city within the shortest possible time.

Car Talk / The History & Evolution Of The Toyota Landcruiser From 1951 To Present Day(pics) by AutoJoshNG: 11:53am On Aug 02, 2019

The Toyota Landcruiser is one of the numerous SUVs produced by the Japanese automaker Toyota. It is pronounced Toyota Rando-Kurūzā in Japanese.

The Landcruiser remains Toyota’s longest running series of models and the production of the first generation of the SUV began in 1951. That’s 60 years ago. The Landcruiser has been produced in various body styles which include: convertible, hardtop, station wagon and cab chassis bodystyles.

The birth of the Toyota Landcruiser can be traced to the Korean War. The war created a demand for a military light utility vehicle, the United States of America which then still occupied Japan, tasked Toyota to manufacture them. In January 1951, the Toyota “Jeep” BJ prototype was developed and was test drove in July of the same year by Toyota’s test driver Ichiro Taira.

The National Police Agency got impressed by the performance of the Jeep BJ and placed an order for 289 of the off-road vehicle. By 1953, the regular production of the Toyota Jeep BJ began.

Some of the greatest attributes of the Toyota Landcruiser which led to its mind blowing popularity are the reliability and longevity of the SUV. At some points, it became the best body-on-frame, four-wheel-drive vehicle in some parts of the world. It survived one of the toughest operating environments in both temperature and terrain.

Let’s see how the Toyota Landcruiser evolved from 1951 to present day.

Travel / Customs Seizes 153 Vehicles In Kaduna In The Last 6 Months by AutoJoshNG: 10:06pm On Aug 01, 2019

The Zone B of Nigeria Customs Service Federal Operations Unit Kaduna, on Wednesday, said it had seized smuggled goods valued at over N1.05 billion in the last six months.

The Comptroller of the command, Mustafa Sarkin-Kebbi, said at a press briefing in Kaduna that the seizures were made between January and June 2019 within the command’s area of operation.

He said that the figure had doubled the seizures made within the same period in 2018, which was N504.1 million.

He said that 623 seizures were made within the period under review, which included 153 vehicles, 8,618 bags of foreign rice, 820 cartons of Spaghetti, 167 bags of sugar and 147 bales of second hand clothing.

He attributed the increase in the DPV to the considerable increase in the seizures made which was 623 in the first half of the year, as against 312 within the same period in 2018.

“For the remaining half of the year, we are going to redouble our efforts and makes sure that we improve considerably,” he said.

Politics / Raise The Standard Of Emergency Response, Sanwo-olu Charges LASEMA Officers by AutoJoshNG: 9:52pm On Aug 01, 2019

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Tuesday said there’s need to rejig the operation of the State’s emergency response team for better performance and service delivery in disaster management.

The Governor who spoke during his visit to the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) operational headquarters at Cappa, Oshodi, praised the emergency response personnel for the quality of service the agency rendered, while saying that there was need to raise the standards of its operation in line with best practice. He pledged that his administration would support the agency to deliver on its mandate.

He said: “On behalf of the people of Lagos, I commend LASEMA and its emergency workers’ performance in disaster management. But, we know there is still a lot that we can do to raise the standard and there is still a lot that is expected of us but I can assure you that we will support LASEMA for quality service.

“This is why we are here to assess the level of response mechanism and take stock of the challenges the agency might be facing. We do not want to give excuses to the taxpayers. We pledge our continued support to encourage the agency to live up to expectations, because its efficiency in service delivery would be the parameter citizens would use to assess and write the agency scorecards.”

The Governor emphasised the need for maintaining professionalism and empathy in the discharge of the agency’s duty, noting that disaster management required promptness and competency to minimise losses.

Sanwo-Olu tasked the emergency workers to work towards reducing their response time by half. He said the government would address the resource gap hindering the agency from taking its service to optimal level.

LASEMA Director General, Dr. Femi Oke-Osanyintolu, led Governor Sanwo-Olu on an inspection of the equipment used by the agency in its emergency operations. The Governor also inspected the state of facilities in LASEMA Response Unit (LRU) in Alausa.

What factors do you think should be looked into to improve the rate of response to emergency by LASEMA?

Car Talk / Car Headrest, Safety Benefits And The Various Types by AutoJoshNG: 9:28am On Aug 01, 2019

As fancy as the headrests of your car look, they have a vital role to play when it comes to your safety while driving.

Headrests which are also called head restraints is a one of the safety features in the automotive industry. They are attached or integrated into the top of each seat to limit the backward movement of the adult occupant’s head when there is a collision. This is to prevent or mitigate whiplash or injury to the cervical vertebrae.

What is a whiplash injury?

Whiplash injury is a type of neck injury caused by sudden movement of the head forwards, backwards or sideways. It occurs when the soft tissues in the neck become stretched and damaged (sprained).

The headrest became a mandatory safety feature for cars in the late 1960s and ever since then, has prevented thousands of serious injuries.

There are different types of headrests developed by manufacturers over the years to protect the occupants of their car from whiplash.

Below are the various types of headrest that we have:

1. Integrated headrest or fixed headrest:

This headrest that is not height adjustable and cannot be detached from the seat or the vehicle structure except by the use of tools or following the partial or total removal of the seat furnishing.

2. Adjustable headrest:

This type of headrest is capable of being positioned to fit the morphology of the seated occupant. The device may permit horizontal movement, known as tilt adjustment, and/or vertical movement, known as height adjustment.

3. Active headrest:

This type comes with a device designed to automatically improve headrest position and/or geometry during an impact.

4. Automatically adjusting headrest:

This refers to a headrest that automatically adjusts the position of the headrest when the seat position is adjusted.

In order to prevent the whiplash injury that may occur as a result of an accident, it is advised you set your headrest accordingly.

Travel / LASG Plans for Closure Of Lagos-ibadan Expressway For 4 Months Repair Works by AutoJoshNG: 12:09pm On Jul 31, 2019

The Lagos State Government has allayed the fears of motorists over the planned four-month repair works on Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, saying that adequate measures have been put in place by the present administration to effectively manage the impending traffic situation.

The Permanent Secretary, State Ministry of Transportation, Dr. Taiwo Olufemi Salaam, who disclosed this yesterday at Ikeja, stated that in the project brief made available to the State Government, the repair works will narrow both Lagos and Sagamu bound traffic into two lanes on both carriageways respectively and is planned for two months each for inward and outward traffic from the State.

He emphasised that Lagos is well prepared and ready for the attendant traffic situation through extensive traffic management and control for the repair works which commences on Saturday, 3rd August 2019 and is envisaged to trigger and compound traffic along the corridors.

Salaam affirmed that the State has identified four locations to redirect traffic through, while the personnel of the Lagos State Traffic Management Agency (LASTMA) and Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) as well as Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) will be on ground to provide towing vehicles and other necessary support for evacuating unexpected breakdowns.

The Permanent Secretary explained that the area undergoing repairs will have floodlights and flashing lights placed in strategic places to aid vehicular movement at night, adding that having the whole area lit at night, apart from safety purposes, is also to ensure that Julius Berger completes the repair work within the stipulated period.

He also highlighted other measures already planned by the State government to include the display of advance warning signs; day and night emergency response crew; dummy flagman to direct motorists and slip road provided on both sides of the carriageway.

While assuring motorists of the readiness of the Lagos State government to effectively manage the traffic situation during the period, the Permanent Secretary solicited for the understanding and cooperation of all road users and urged everyone to obey all traffic officials and signs for the entire duration of the reconstruction.

Car Talk / 5 Signs That Indicates Your Transmission Needs To Be Flushed by AutoJoshNG: 5:06am On Jul 31, 2019

There are a lot of people out there that give less attention to the transmission of their car. They fail to give their transmission the necessary care it needs until one major fault arises or when it finally packs up.

One of the routine maintenance of a car’s transmission that is most times overlooked by some people is knowing when to change the transmission oil. The transmission oil might be present in the car and even up to the prescribed level but may contain too much dirt or sludge that will cause the transmission misbehave.

We are about to list the signs your car is likely to give to indicate your transmission is dirty and requires to be flushed.

These are the 5 signs to tell you need to flush your transmission

1. Surging of the Vehicle:

When your vehicle’s transmission is polluted with a lot of dirt and contaminants, and needs a transmission flush, you may notice inexplicable surging of your vehicle. Because your car’s dirty transmission does not allow for adequate transmission fluid flow, your vehicle may tend to jump or surge forward and fall backwards for no good reason. This is caused by inconsistent flow of clean transmission fluid that is needed to ensure smooth operation of the gears and other moving parts inside the transmission bell housing.

2. Delay in Vehicle Movement:

Another sign that your vehicle may have contaminated transmission fluid is when the vehicle stalls for one or two seconds before moving after having been put in gear. If there are no other problems with the transmission, a transmission flush may help.

3. Grinding and strange noises from the transmission:

A transmission that is due for oil change may start making grinding or strange noises. This noise tends to be significant when the transmission is contaminated with dirt, grease and sludge. At this point, the transmission displays symptoms very similar to inadequate level of transmission fluid.

4. Sluggish response while shifting gears:

On a normal operating condition of the transmission, the transition from one gear to another is often smooth. When your transmission is not clean and contains much dirt or sludge, you’ll get sluggish response in the transmission.

This could mean your car will start changing gear more quickly or too late when you drive.

For manual transmission, you may find it hard to change gears at all.

5. Slipping gears:

The effect of dirty transmission can also result in slipping gears. Very low transmission fluid can also cause this. Contaminated fluids will cause lack of hydraulic power and could make gear slip.

When you start noticing any or all these signs in your car, it may mean that your transmission needs to be flushed. You will need to take your car to a professional to flush off the old fluid and replace with a new RECOMMENDED fluid.

Please, endeavour to use the Transmission fluid recommended by your car manufacturers. It will save you a whole lot of troubles.

Car Talk / The Evolution Of Toyota Corolla From The Year 1966 To Present (photos) by AutoJoshNG: 4:21am On Jul 31, 2019

There are various Toyota vehicles on our Nigerian roads, but Toyota Corolla is one of the most common of them all. Check around where you are right now, there is a high possibility of seeing one or two Toyota Corollas around.

Toyota Corolla is very common in Nigeria due to myriad of reasons which include: durability, longevity, good fuel economy, easy maintenance, good resale value etc.

The Toyota Corolla pronounced Toyota Karōra in Japanese was introduced in 1966 and by 1974 was the best-selling car worldwide. Ever since then to present day, it remained one of the best-selling cars in the world.

Most of the early models were rear-wheel drive, but now most of the newer models are front-wheel drive.

Let’s take a walk down the history lane and see how Toyota Corolla changed throughout its 53 years of excellent existence.

1. 1966–1970: First generation (E10)

This was the first car to bear the name Toyota Corolla. It was introduced in 1966 with the new 1100cc K pushrod engine.

2. 1970–1974: Second generation (E20)

This Corolla was restyled with a more rounded body and the new 1400 T and the 1600 cc 2T OHV engines were also added.

3. 1974–1979: Third generation (E30, E40, E50, E60)

The Toyota guys decided to make the Corolla rounder, bigger and heavier. In this generation, two door liftback was added and in 1976, Corolla was fitted with retracting front seat belts.

4. 1979–1983: Fourth generation (E70)

This generation brought a major restyle of the Corolla. Instead of the normal round body, it came with the square edge design.
The size of the grill, headlights and taillights were all reduced. This was the last model to use the K “hicam” and T series engines.

5. 1983–1987: Fifth generation (E80)

In this generation, Toyota followed the style during that time. A sloping bonnet, sharp-edged and no frills.

6. 1987–1991: Sixth generation (E90)

The sixth generation of the Toyota Corolla which was introduced in May 1987 has more rounded and aerodynamic style. And most model came with front-wheel-drive.

7. 1991-1995: Seventh generation (E100)

In June 1991, Corollas received a redesign to be larger, heavier, and have the completely rounded, aerodynamic shape of the 1990s.

8. 1995-2002: Eight generation (E110)

The production of the eighth generation Corolla started in May 1995. The design of the car was slightly altered throughout but retained a look similar to that of the seventh generation (E100). For the very first time in 1998, some non-Japanese Corollas received the new 1ZZ-FE engine. The engine was the first in a Toyota to have an aluminum engine block and aluminum cylinder heads, which made this generation lighter than the E100 Corolla.

9. 2003–2007: Ninth generation (E120,E130)

The ninth generation Corolla was introduced in August 2000 with edgier styling and more technology to bring the nameplate into the 21st century.

The North American release was delayed until March 2002 (for the 2003 model year). The E130 was sold in North America from 2003 to 2007.

10. 2008-2013: Tenth generation (E140, E150)

The body style of the Corolla totally changed for this generation.

11. 2014-2017: Eleventh generation (E140, E150)

12. 2018–present: Twelfth generation (E210)

The twelfth generation Corolla in hatchback body style was unveiled as a pre-production model in March 2018 at the Geneva Motor Show.

The sedan variation of the Corolla was unveiled simultaneously between 15 and 16 November 2018 in Carmel-by-the-Sea, California, United States and China at the 2018 Guangzhou International Motor Show.

We would love to hear from you. Which generation of the Toyota Corolla do you love the most? How many of them have you driven and what are your experiences?

We are sill surprised Nigerians didn't give names to the various Corolla models just like they did for Camrys
