President Muhammadu Buhari and former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar are expected to speak on restructuring at the “Handshake across Niger” summit ahead of 2019 general election.


Buhari is the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) while Abubakar is the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the 2019 presidential election.


Also expected to speak at the summit scheduled to take place on Monday, November 19 at the Shell Hall, MUSON centre, Lagos, are Senate President Bukola Saraki, Yakubu Dogara, speaker of the house of representatives; Wole Soyinka, a Nobel laureate; and Nnia Nwodo, president-general of Ohanaeze Ndigbo.


According to Ngozi Odumuko, coordinator of Nzuko Umunna, organisers of the event, the summit is designed to move the national conversation on political restructuring forward as the country approaches the 2019 elections.


Odumuko said the key purpose of the summit themed
“Nigeria beyond oil” is to extract a formal pledge of commitment to restructuring, a priority of the southern and middle belt zones, from the major parties and presidential candidates.[b/]


The coordinator said the initiative is an expansion of the January 11, 2018, “Handshake Across the Niger” summit organised to end the suspicion and unhealthy rivalry between the Igbo and Yoruba.


[b]“The key priorities of the event is to bring together the various thought leaders of the component regions to articulate progressive ideas that could foster national integration and development especially as we approach the 2019 elections,” Odumuko.


“And to avail an opportunity for thought leaders and socio-cultural organisations to constructively interrogate the presidential candidates of selected political parties on their plans, programmes and policies before the elections.”



Two former ministers of external affairs Ike Nwachukwu, a retired major general, and Ibrahim Gambari will chair the occasion.

Other dignitaries expected at the event are Ike Ekweremadu, deputy Senate president, Ayo Adebanjo, Afenifere chieftain, and Edwin Clark, Niger Delta leader.

The World Bank Group has ranked Nigeria 152 out of a total of 157 countries surveyed in its Human Capital Index (HCI) that was unveiled on Thursday.

The HCI measures the amount of human capital that a child born today can expect to attain by age 18, given the risks of poor health and education that prevail in the country where he or she lives. The Index measures each country’s distance to the frontier of complete education and full health for a child born today.


The President of the multilateral institution, Mr. Jim Yong Kim, while responding to a THISDAY question during a media briefing at the ongoing IMF/World Bank Annual Meetings in Bali, Indonesia, said it was unfortunate that Nigeria was ranked 152 in the HCI.

He explained: “Nigeria unfortunately ranks 152 out of 157 countries. We provide quite a bit of support to Nigeria in terms of the health budget. But we feel that the overall spending on health in just far too low at 0.76 per cent of Gross Domestic Product (GDP). Also, the educational outcomes in Nigeria are very poor.”

He described human capital as a key driver of sustainable, inclusive economic growth, saying investing in health and education has not got the attention it deserves.

“This index creates a direct line between improving outcomes in health and education, productivity, and economic growth. I hope that it drives countries to take urgent action and invest more – and more effectively – in their people.

“The bar is rising for everyone,” Kim added. “Building human capital is critical for all countries, at all income levels, to compete in the economy of the future.”

This simply shows how "unatikulated" the response to this challenge can be. The intelligent "atikulated" questions are categorized basically into the 16 categories below. What you will expect as smart response is to take one after the other, and provide the answers. ALAS, TOTAL FAILURE!! Therefore, the rating for this first challenge is:- PMB Team - 0; Atiku Team - 16.

· Name one project initiated, started and completed in the last three years by the Buhari administration.
· Name one youth in President Buhari’s cabinet.
· Name one campaign promise President Buhari has kept.
· Name one Southerner heading a National Intelligence Agency under Buhari.
· Name one terrorist arrested, tried, convicted and imprisoned by the Buhari administration.
· Name one Buhari government official arrested, tried, convicted and imprisoned by the Buhari administration over their many budget padding scandals.
· Name one member of the Buhari administration fingered in corruption that was fired, arrested and currently facing trial.
· Name one former President or Head of State that has not been blamed by President Buhari for the precarious state of the economy he led us into.
· Name one year that Nigeria’s GDP grew faster than her population under Buhari (for 16 years of PDP administrations, Nigeria’s GDP always grew faster than population growth).
· Name the initiatives the Buhari government has put in place to address Nigeria being named the world headquarters for extreme poverty under Buhari.
· Name one initiative the Buhari government has put in place to address Nigeria having the world’s highest number of out of school children (13.2 million according to the United Nations Children Fund).
· Name the date the Ogoni cleanup will begin.
· Name what President Buhari has done with the ₦13 trillion loans he has taken in 3 years (compared to the ₦6 trillion borrowed by the PDP in 16 years).
· Name the real owners of the Ikoyi Apartment billions.

Pairing with Okonjo Nweala will be a nice pairing which the opposition can use to convince the women in Nigeria that they are part of governance. Okonjo is very intelligent and also known for her integrity. That will also diffuse the "Mr. Integrity" logo which APC is using to sell its candidate.

Please help ask him/her when is he/she going back to London to complete the unfinished task? Or is his/her refusal to be allowed to enter London has finally been sealed?

Why won't APC be making noise?? There is a Yoruba proverb that says "If there's no crack in the wall, there will be no hole through which a Lizard can slip through.

If PDP had put it's house in order, the party would have put APC to shame flawlessly . Assuming PDP conducted a "free and fare" direct primary election, possibly Omisore wouldn't have left the party.

Oyetola of APC could only manage to garner 255,505 in the Osun election. Imagine if the figures of PDP (255,023) half of ADC's figures of 128,053 comes to Omisore due to his influence (assuming 64,026 for Omisore) , PDP could have scored a total of 319,049 (255,023 + 64,026).

So, how would APC be able to do any wuruwuru with such wide gap (319,049 - 255,505) of over 63,000.

Now the presidential primary of PDP is already gathering dust with Wike's threat. It is unfortunate that the party is about losing the 2019 election before it even commences due to selfishness of its members.

May God help us in Nigeria.
