About 70 million active mobile line owners in the country do not have bank accounts, the CEO of eTranzact International Plc., Niyi Toluwalope, has said.

Toluwalope, who stated this recently at the Capital Market Correspondents Association of Nigerian (CAMCAN) 2021 Annual Workshop in Lagos, said that 110 million Nigerians owned 150 million mobile phone lines but only about 40 million had active bank verification numbers.

Toluwalope said there is a need to close the gap, especially as regards small and medium enterprises.

Speaking on “Technology as a Tool for Financial Inclusion in Nigeria: A Fintech Approach”, he said that financial inclusion was important to the capital market industry.

His words: “Financial inclusion holds the answers to how we increase the participation of retail investors, how we encourage more homegrown businesses, leverage the capital market for growth, and the informal sector’s participation in the capital market.

“The role of technology cannot be overemphasized. Over the past few years, technology has allowed more people to gain access to financial services, and that has increased by default, the customer base of capital market operators.

Beneficiaries of the Presidential Amnesty Programme (PAP), who were part of two separate entrepreneurship training in Yenagoa, Bayelsa state, under the Seven Oaks Auction and Trading Ltd, have commended President Muhammadu Buhari for his dedication in ensuring the amnesty programme was sustained.

The Seven Oaks Auction and Trading Limited, an accredited vendor under the Amnesty Office in 2019, undertook two separate training on entrepreneurship for amnesty beneficiaries and in 2021, empowered the beneficiaries.

The empowerment programme was in two phase. The first batch of beneficiaries were empowered with Keke Napeps, which was distributed in the premises of the Bayelsa chapter of the National Union of Journalists, (NUJ) in Yenagoa early this year, while the second batch were empowered with Thermocool Chest Freezers, Firman Generating Sets, various food items and funds for renting of shops in July 2021.

The beneficiaries particularly extolled the virtues of the Amnesty interim Administrator, Col Millan Dikio (rtd) who they said had proven to be a round peg in a round hole and has shown remarkable dedication to duty.

According to the beneficiaries, it was commendable how the vendor’s strict adherence to laid down procedures of the Amnesty Programme ensured that all those who were part of the training were provided with the necessary empowerment items and funding.

Politics / Buhari Didn't Sack AEDC Management - Presidency by Ayinesongya3: 11:16am On Dec 09, 2021
President Muhammadu Buhari did not order the removal of the management of the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC), the presidency has said, contradicting an earlier announcement by the Ministry of Power.

The power minister, Abubakar Aliyu, on Tuesday, December 7, 2021, announced the president had authorized the replacement of the management of the troubled firm, but critics accused the government of interfering in a private company, a move capable of turning potential investors away.

A former head of the Nigeria Electricity Regulatory Commission, Sam Amadi, said the president lacked such powers.

Mr Aliyu on Wednesday, December 8, 2021, claimed the announcement was reported out of context and said the decision was taken instead by UBA, which has taken over the electricity firm following AEDC’s loan repayment default.

The AEDC is one of 11 electricity distribution companies that emerged from the 2013 privatization of the sector. The government holds 40 percent in the AEDC while the lead investor, KANN Utility, holds 60 percent.

Business / Reps Probe Institute's N2bn Spending, Bank Of Agric Debts by Ayinesongya3: 10:33am On Dec 09, 2021
The House of Representatives’ Committee on Public Accounts has resolved to investigate the utilisation of the N2bn paid to the National Institute of Pharmaceutical Research and Development for Intervention on COVID-19 from the Service Wide Vote account by the Federal Government.

The Chairman of the committee, Oluwole Oke, called for the probe when the acting Director of Finance and Accounts of the institute, Mr Dzarma Levis, appeared before the panel to defend the spending of releases made through the SWV from 2013 to 2020.

Levis could not give satisfactory explanations to all the questions raised by the members of the committee on how the intervention fund was disbursed, which prompted a member to call for probe.

Consequently, the committee set up a sub-committee to probe how the N2bn was spent.

Oke said, “They collected N2bn in 2020 for COVID-19 intervention. The committee has perused their submission and it is not satisfied with the claims of the agency because the due process certificate presented was not signed. So, the committee is worried. So, the committee thus resolved that a sub-committee be set up to go and inspect the claims of what the agency claimed to have done with the N2bn.”

In the gender demographics insight on employee’s desired intrinsic traits from a company, men ranked financial stability of a company as the most important intrinsic trait, followed by career growth and welfare/benefits.

The report said women ranked career growth as the most important intrinsic trait, in addition to the financial stability of a company and welfare/benefits.

Jobberman noted that remote work was not as highly ranked as one might think, despite being accelerated by COVID-19, which could be due to factors such as unreliable power supply and internet connection that affect remote work structures and hinder productivity.

Thousands of Nigerians have called out Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu over comments he made following the release of the White Paper on the Lekki tollgate shooting of October 20, 2020.

Speaking at a press conference on Tuesday, November 30, Sanwo-Olu refuted the findings of the Judicial Panel of Inquiry that implicated the Nigerian army and police in carrying out a massacre that killed harmless anti-police brutality protesters at Lekki tollgate.

According to some social media users, Ambode cautioned about Sanwo-Olu's very fickle credibility, adding that he was also "mentally handicapped."

"This particular aspirant as we all know .. you can go and check, the records are there. This was somebody that has been arrested for spreading fake American dollars in a nightclub in America and has been detained for months. He is also known to not have competence for what he is being propelled to do. Politics / NASS C’ttee Clerks Trained To Track Budget For Gender Responsiveness by Ayinesongya3: 12:22pm On Nov 30, 2021
Selected clerks of some committees in the National Assembly were over the weekend trained by Yiaga Africa as part of the implementing partner of the Spotlight Initiative Project, to track and monitor Programs and projects in the budget of their respective Committees to ensure they are gender- responsive.

Speaking at a workshop in Lagos, the Coordinator of Yiaga Africa – Center for Legislative Engagement, Ernest Ereke, said the Clerks are expected to mainstream Gender issues into the Appropriations bills, saying: “With the workshop, clerks who are critical stakeholders and engine rooms of the legislature will know how to query gaps and loopholes as it affects specific gender in the appropriations.

Ereke explained that the clerks are eligible to advise law makers and suggest ways to improve budget appropriations to reflect Gender Specifics, adding that members of NASS themselves will soon be engaged as well on the same issue under discourse.

“We did a trend analysis of last three (3) years, our findings showed that issues on Gender-Responsive budgeting were not given due attention. Now we want to change the narrative through the clerks and other stakeholders,” he affirmed.

Delivering a lecture, a senior researcher from National Institute for Legislative & Democratic Studies (NILDS) Terfa Abraham, stressed that budget- responsiveness is not about dividing the national or state budgets in two for men and women, but it’s about making the projects and programs contained in the budget to become more responsive to specific needs of people in various societies that are considered vulnerable.

Comedian Basketmouth has shared his thoughts on the two ways to call a person.

According to him, placing a phone call and social media call out are the means to get through to a person.

However, using the social media call out when you have the person's phone number is lame and disrespectful.

The actor noted that when a person has the contact of the individual they are trying to caution, they should do so privately and not on social media.

"There are two ways to call people. 1 A phone call. 2. Social media call out. The latter is lame and disrespectful. Especially when you have their phone number," he said.
