AgricultureRe: Pig Farmers Lets Meet Here by ayodejy05(m): 7:27pm On Jul 15, 2014
Seun: Where can I buy very small piglets (less than 4kg) regularly to use for feeding a dog? About how much would they cost (per kg)? Tnx!
Per kg of pig is just #700 in. But it is very hard to see that size for sale at a cheaper price.
AgricultureGood Advice To The Unemployed And Intending Farmers. Very Helpful by ayodejy05(op): 2:10pm On Jul 15, 2014
Anybody that says agriculture does not pay, or cannot make you to be successful is a big liar. Do you know the reason why I said this? I was once in that category. Over 10 years ago, I aspired to be a medical doctor, but if it doesn't work out for me, I will choose microbiology as an alternative. I did all my possible best to be admitted to any of these field, but all to no avail (I passed my jamb and post UTME). Out of frustration, I decided to move to agriculture in which I have been successful without regret.
Agribusiness is a very lucrative business. Take it or leave it! I have tried it and it works out good for me. The reasons why most people run away from agriculture are laziness; cannot take risk; fear of failing. Of a truth, anyone that give those reasons cannot go into any business at all.
Let me tell you, there is no aspect of agribusiness that is not profitable. Either fishery, poultry, pig, rabbit, sheep, goat, cattle, cane rat production, agro-allied business, etc. The mistake most people make is that, they rush into a business without having a sound knowledge of what they are going into. Some will say, "My friend started it and he was successful, and so I will do it too." Have you contacted your friend for more information about the business? You must know the fundamentals of a particular business before you start. Even if you cannot carry out a feasibility study, try and use your instinct to know if you have a favorable environment for a particular agribusiness. For instance, can you start catfish production where there is scarcity of water? Can you setup a pig farm where people don't consume pork (meat of pig)? That is why I like those who always contact me for more information before they setup their farms. I count them as wise people.
These are some of the things that are needed to be considered when going into any agric-related business.
Yes, I know someone will refer to finance as a hindrance. Seriously, money shouldn't be recognized as a problem. A friend of mine always say, "You become a failure the moment you take money as a problem." As an intending poultry farmer, you can start with buying and selling one crate of eggs. Save your profit and plan to expand as profit increases. There are many rich farmers who started this way and they are now an employer of labour. I tried something like this too and it worked for me (contact me and I will give you more tip about this free of charge).
Once again agribusiness is profitable but information and research makes it very easy for you to choose that which will make you successful. Visit websites, forums, and blogs in the agriculture niche for more information on becoming successful through farming. I have a new blog in the livestock farming niche www.livestocking.com , there are information that will interest you there.
Remember, Nigeria has little or nothing to offer the unemployed, now is the time for you to help yourself. As a Youth Corper, try and save for the future. Save part of your monthly allowance even though it’s not enough for you. If you are though with youth service, work towards being an entrepreneur, because…….Entrepreneurship pays.

It is instinct. Anyway, if you want to avoid this, After touching or handling the kits, use the urine of the mother to rub her mouth part. That's all. She will not be able to differentiate.

we've been hearing of how lucrative pig farming is but let's discuss more on the marketing. I will be starting my pig farm soon in abeokuta.. But let us discuss more on the marketing.
regards,
Popoolagroup.
You start with those who slaughter pigs for Suya, Barbeque, or whatever around your farm; they connect with each other. Before you know it, your customers will start increasing. Likewise make research on the Internet for foreign buyers and try to get contacts of buyers from the eastern part of Nigeria. Permit me to use this; "them dey buy pigs wella, in fact using big lorries."

Keziehenry: As we know that in poultry biz at times they die in many numbers due to one form of disease or the other, i want to knw abt pig ie if it has some kind of diseases that affect them.
Yes, Pigs also coe down with viral, bacterial, fungal disease; such as
Swine Fever
Brucellosis
Swine typhoids
Erysipela
Swine Pox
Foot and mouth disease etc. (these are just a few)

But one thing I know is that local breed of pigs are very rugged and are somehow resistant to most of these diseases. Proper health and hygiene programmes are the way out to prevent diseases. Just as you care for poultry, care for your pigs.
AgricultureRe: Pig Farmers Lets Meet Here by ayodejy05(m):
hopsydboi: am actually going to set it off at owo, ondo state
You should get be getting enough buyers from Uso, owo, and Oka, oba, Akungba, Ikare Akoko area (mind you, most christian living in Akoko municipalities consume pork). What is there is that, you should do your market survey to be sure before starting because I only know of Akure.

The problem now is that, most pig farmers cannot raise their animals in residential areas like before. They have to move to remote areas. I wonder why they should, because it is possible to operate a pig farm around residential areas without polluting the environment, and even generate extra income.

You can easily breed maggot using pig dung while the liquid waste is channeled into a sewage pit. (always avoid using more water when cleaning).I always advise farmer to use the residual water in the watering trough and wallowing pit for cleaning the pens. Sprinkle disinfectant solution on the floor after cleaning .
One secret that most people and farmers don't know about pigs is that, pigs are one of the neatest if not the neatest animals in the world. You can carry out this experiment:
1. Construct pens that are spacious enough and avoid overcrowding
2. Construct the feed and water trough in the same place, and make use of shower system to cool pigs' body.
3. Now observe the pigs every day; you will notice that, they will never urinate and excrete in the place they feed or take water. They will move to a corner distant from where they feed and take water, to do these.

It is what I know and I'll surely stand on my ground about this fact.
So, it is the design of the pens that has made your pigs to behave or look dirty.

NB: What you give your pigs will determine if you will get enough meat or more than enough fat (many people including me don't like taking animal fat). If you delight in giving PKC, cassava peels, kitchen waste, and junks to pigs, they will convert them to enough body fat with poor growth performance. It is better you get a good feed formula to prepare a good concentrate for them. With a good pig breeds (even if it is not pure breed) such as Duroc, Landrace, Poland China etc. you will surely get a good result.

AgricultureHow To Carry Out Artificial Insemination For Catfish by ayodejy05(op): 8:40pm On Jul 03, 2014
This is the artificial breeding of fish. The materials needed are Aerator, Injector, Razor Blade, Knife, Saline water, Hatching Bowl, Siphoning Tube, Artificial Hormone (Ovaprim), Floatation tank.
The procedures involved are as follows:
1 Washing, cleaning and disinfection of the hatchery and its environs
2 Arrangement of some of the equipment needed in the hatchery
3 Acquisition of brood stock (mature male and female fish of about a year or more than)
4 Injecting the female fish with about 0.5mil of artificial hormone (Ovaprim)
5 Killing of the male fish in other to obtain their milt (sperm), ensure that blood did not mix with the sperm
6 Striping (Forcing out of eggs from the abdomen) of the hormone stimulated female fish after about 9-10 hours of injection.
7 Pouring of the milt obtained over the stripped eggs in the hatching bowl. Addition of little quantity of saline water and careful mixing to ensure that the milt touches all the eggs for effective fertilization to take place.
8 Spreading of the mixed eggs on the kaskasban display on the floatation tank.
9 Lighting up of the bulbs and closing down of the doors and windows of the hatchery
10 After about 24-48 hours the eggs were hatched and feeding of the newly hatched fishes started from the third day after hatching.

Goldenboy842: SNAIL BREEDING
Snails belong to the family of animal called MOLLUSCA, is an hermaphrodite. It has both the female and male sexual organs; so one cannot really distinguish between the male and female specie of it.
Many who are into snail farming in Nigeria are also unwilling to let others know about the farming methodology. The techniques are often shrouded in secrecy. But the plain truth is that snail farming is as easy as ABC. The only thing the snails may constantly demand from you is your attention and care. They hardly fall sick. You don't have to buy their food and you may not have to spend much to create an abode for them. The beauty of it all is that the snails reproduce rapidly. They are capable of producing hundreds of eggs, which hatch into snails. It is now possible to produce 1,000,000 snails worth more than N5 million twice a year. This is made possible because of the availability of very highly prolific ACHATINA ACHATINA species of snails, which lay 200-400 in one batch 2-3 times a year.
Nigeria's economic recovery programmes have necessitated a radical shift from total dependence on government for job to self-employment. One such attractive area for self-employment is snail rearing. It is a great money-spinning business that can provide a substantial source of protein to complement Nigerian carbohydrate meals. Sadly Nigerians inclination to go into business in the fields where thousands have already made their fortune has led to the ulter neglect of such lucrative area of snail farming in Nigeria or export at international market.

From our own experience, they include, among others:
1. Snail farming in Nigeria is a virgin in the kingdom of livestock as a result the earlier investors without doubt have bright prospects in exploring this venture.
2. Snail farming is a practicable and viable venture yet unexplored in Nigeria. If it has worked elsewhere, it will work in Nigeria.
3. This technology has been approved to be most lucrative farming venture presently, as it requires far less capital investment, while much profit is being generated in a considerable short period. It has lower risk compared to other livestock farming.
4. The demand for snail is higher than the supplies asuch the market potential of snail is inexhaustible, locally and internationally.
5. Virtually every part of snail is of vital use in Food, Pharmaceutical industry, manufacturing and fishing industries.
6. Snail is an export commodity, which has value next to gold in overseas countries. It is a foreign exchange income earner of our days. Our climate is one of the best in snail breeding.
7. Snail farming in Nigeria requires small capital and the running cost is very low, hence their feeds are very local.
8. If your start up capital is N100,000 you can generate the sum of one million naira in one year. Some people in other livestock may earn another N100,000, if they met no risk in a year.
9. Snail business indeed is a GEM in the livestock business. Therefore take advantage of the opportunity of being among the forerunners in this unbeatable venture. More tomorro.

Advice to pig farmers, as a Farm manager and animal scientist, I recommend using tapolin material to roof your pens and never you buy your starting stock from the same place or farm. Make provision for shower system in all pens and deworm your pigs regularly (every month). You can visit www.livestocking.com for more

I went to the board to check the list. WTF!!! Only my name was missing. I checked other departments to see if I could find it (desperate and curios). After my searching went futile. I went straight to the DSA building to complain. Idiot staffs!!! Did you have result? That was the first question they asked me. I told them yes. They checked and confirmed this. The woman was now asking herself what happened. To cut the long story short. The reason was "No jamb reg number" as reported by the woman. I have a jamb reg number and my Jamb admission letter is with me. I and others were told to write our Jamb reg number, but unfortunately we are not going with Batch B. till November. Anyway God understands. But I'm sure the school wrote it wrongly.
