YABA LCDA: SECURITY OF LIVES AND PROPERTY, SACROSANCT With undiluted sense of responsibility and interest for the promotion and protection of general development of Yaba LCDA in particular and the entire Mainland in general, I write once again to alert the good people of YABA and Mainland of the attempt by fifth columnists in Yaba to truncate the peaceful co-existence and relations we have tirelessly been trying to build in other to foster uninterrupted development that has been lacking in our beloved YABA in the last 18 years. Yaba LCDA and Mainland as one of the highest economic and commercial hub of Lagos is supposed to be at the heap of LCDA that should determine and drive the provision of basic social amenities for it tax payers due to the roles they play in the generation of the huge income it earns, but due to greed of the self-acclaimed political war lords in Mainland and their unrepentant sit-tight style of primitive accumulation, the people of Yaba has so far been at the receiving end. We are all living witnesses to the state of youth restiveness and tension YABA has been plugged-into in the last 8years due to lack of responsive leadership and administrative naivety of some privileged politicians who due to their self-serving RULERSHIP style has turned high percentage of the youths against each other. My interventions among the warring parties have calmed and have been able to restore harmonious relationship among them lately. And due to the obvious and non-favourable political drums in their camps by the party leadership in other to restore peace, genuine leadership and good governance to the people of YABA LCDA, they have resolved to employing the services of hoodlums’ and thugs to truncate the peaceful co-existence our people are currently enjoying. I want to first call on the leadership of the State headed by my amiable Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode to come to the aid of Yaba/Mainlanders and rescue us from the hand of these sit-tight usurpers who has in the last 18 years turned the sweats of our people in YABA to their instrument of personal hegemony; a situation that has suspended the development and general growth of YABA and Mainland . I also use this medium to call on all concerned civil society organizations, social commentators and peace loving Yaba/Mainlanders to rise up to the occasion by openly resisting oppressive and uneven style of RULERSHIP YABA and Mainland has witnessed in the last 18years by raising their voices for the CHANGE we need. In a bid to solve this inglorious past and provide a rich and collective ownership looking future for the people of Yaba and Mainland, where the plights of civil servants, market women, okada riders, vulgarizers and the organized private sector among others will be given due weight, I Comrade ‘WALE BALOGUN will not relent or be tired until all the aforelisted challenges are resolved. Conclusively, as an advocate of the masses, revolutionary socialist and humanist whose interest is to work towards the actualization of a peaceful, just, peoples’ friendly and a poverty free environment that will transport Mainlanders from anarchy to peaceful co-existence, poverty to abundance and from Carry Ka Chop government to peoples’ government/good governance is achieved in YABA particularly and Mainland by extension. MY WORDS IS MY BOND |

Falana: Obasanjo’s, Atiku’s Pensions Can’t Build Primary Schools Yet They Own Varsities Femi Falana, a human right lawyer and senior advocate of Nigeria (SAN), says the pension of former President Olusegun Obasanjo and Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, is not enough to build a primary school, yet they own universities. Obasanjo is the owner of Bells University of Technology, Ota, Ogun state, while Abubakar is the founder of American University of Nigeria in Yola, Adamawa state. Speaking at the launch of Sahara Reporters’ civic media lab, Falana queried where they got the money from Femi Falana, a human right lawyer and senior advocate of Nigeria (SAN), says the pension of former President Olusegun Obasanjo and Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, is not enough to build a primary school, yet they own universities. Obasanjo is the owner of Bells University of Technology, Ota, Ogun state, while Abubakar is the founder of American University of Nigeria in Yola, Adamawa state. Speaking at the launch of Sahara Reporters’ civic media lab, Falana queried where they got the money from. He said the new advocates of restructuring are the same men who restructured the economy of Nigeria against the people. “These guys who have restructured the economy of Nigeria. Or you are not aware that these guys restructured the economy of Nigeria to the extent that Nigeria is the only country today where former heads of states openly own universities,” Falana said. “Have you ever heard of that anywhere in the world that the likes of Obasanjo, Atiku, Babangida and others, own universities, and of course, the man who is now pushing for restructuring, Atiku, has a university as well. “None of these guys worked outside the government. One was a customs officer, the others were soldiers; their pension cannot establish a primary school, not to talk of a university. For young people, I think there is enough provocation on the part of the ruling class.” Falana spoke to the youth present at the launch about the emergence of Emmanuel Macron, and said rather than draw lessons from the French president, Nigerians are querying his decision to marry a 64-year-old woman. “In this part of the world that is something very serious. A 39-year-old man marrying a 64-year-old woman? And so what? Assuming it was the other way round like Macron asked, nobody would have made any noise. “Let us address the substance; how did a 39-year-old man emerge? Through the social media. How did Obama emerge? When Obama came out, we all said why is this man disturbing Mrs. Clinton? “Where is this black man coming from? He can't go beyond Jesse Jackson. But before you know it, through the social media, young people volunteered and they were spreading the message, and Obama said yes, we can and yes they did. “In our own case we can say today, in 2019, and we can start the mobilization today, and in 2019, insist and demand the qualifications of those who are going to govern the country. “If we start that campaign now before you know it, the organisation is so important. Once these people know you are organized, they can negotiate that you don’t jail them.” Falana lauded Sahara Reporters and its founder, Omoyele Sowore for the work being done, but said Sowore has “incited us sufficiently to get organized” to demand accountability. |
The second anniversary award ceremony by the All Progressives Congress in Niger State ended in a fiasco as members protested over the selection of awardees. Northern City News learnt that the aggrieved party members walked out of the event held on Saturday at Justice Legbo Kutigi Conference Hall. Our correspondent also learnt that the angry party loyalists disagreed with the criteria used in selecting the awardees and left the hall before Governor Abubakar Bello read his address. Checks indicated that the hall was almost empty by the time the governor delivered his speech. Investigation showed that almost all the elected national and state assembly members on the platform of the party were absent except Senator Aliyu Sabi and and two House of Representatives members . Those on the list of awardees included a former Deputy Governor of Niger State , Alhaji Ahmed Ibeto , and those that decamped with him from the Peoples Democratic Party to the APC few days to the 2015 elections and the state commissioner of Works and Transport , Mohammed Cheche . A party member from Suleja Local Government , Sani Mohammed, alleged that the awards were sold and bought . “ The awardees received special recognition because they had money to give to the party executive. This is a cash - and-carry award and it is not good for the party, ” he said as he stormed out of the hall . Another member from Bida , Muhamud Musa , described the award as “ shameless and capable of tearing the party apart, ” adding that some members may feel alienated and abandoned after they had worked very hard for the success of the party in the state. Bello, in his address, said his administration was determined to tackle security challenges in the state for enhanced development. |
The Lagos State All Progressives Congress ( APC) council primaries election was on Saturday marred by protest from aggrieved delegates. The protest which started when the party started announcing the names of the 18 candidates endorsed by the party leadership almost took a violent turn as the Chairman Electoral Committee, Tokunbo Afikuyomi was attacked and almost stripped naked. He had to escape and be protected by the police. Those protesting later destroyed the ballot boxes with most of the delegates protecting their heads from stones and chairs thrown in the venue. Other leaders of the parties present at the venue were led off and protected by security men. |
SARS officers rob UNILAG student of school fees Published May 10, 2017 An undergraduate of the Institute of Continuing Education , University of Lagos , Akoka , identified simply as Adetokunbo, has alleged that some operatives of the Special Anti -Robbery Squad, Lagos State Police Command, attacked him and robbed him of his school fees in the Okota area of the state. Adetokunbo, a 200- level student of Philosophy , told PUNCH Metro on Tuesday that the four policemen accused him of being a Yahoo boy ( Internet fraudster ) because he was seen with an iPhone . He added that the men, who had earlier arrested two other suspects that were in a car, drove them around Lagos roads. The victim said the men later took the two other suspects to an Automated Teller Machine , where they were forced to withdraw N 100, 000 each before they were dropped off at the Oworonshoki area of the state. He said he was released on the Third Mainland Bridge after his N 70, 000 school fees was forcefully taken from him . The victim said he was not pained by the torture , but the fact that he would have to defer his schooling as he could not raise the money again . He said , “ I am a clothier, but I am also undergoing part time studies at UNILAG. I am in 200 level. To raise part of my school fees , which was already due , I had to sell some of my property . “ I had gone to deliver some clothes to a customer in Okota sometime in April and was returning on a motorcycle around 3pm, when I observed that there was panic in the area . The motorcycle rider that took me almost threw me into a gutter. “ I was still chiding him when the operatives approached me and said I was a Yahoo boy. They held me by the trousers as I protested and struggled with them , asking for my offence . I pushed one of them away. They all descended on me and started hitting me. “ They put me in handcuffs and threw me inside their car . The beating was much . They were slapping me from different sides. I told them to check my ID card or allow me to make a call. They didn ’ t listen to me or even check my phone. They asked who my father was that made me use an iPhone , which they could not afford . ” Adetokunbo said he observed there were two other men in the car, adding that he gathered that they had just obtained their visas with a plan to travel abroad when they were arrested. He said the two men , who were also accused of being Internet fraudsters , were searched by the officials and their ATM cards seized. He said the operatives , who had police-crested guns and handcuffs, tore his shorts while attempting to search his back pocket where he had his wallet. “ They took N 70, 000 from me and took the other guys to the ATM to withdraw money, which I gathered was N 100, 000 each . They released them at Oworonsoki . “ My pain in all of these was not even the beating , but the fact that I had to defer my education because of the money they collected from me, ” he said . PUNCH Metro gathered that the police authorities had already contacted Adetokunbo, inviting him for a meeting. He , however , said although he could identify the officers , he was afraid for his life. “ While I was in the car with them , they pointed a gun to my head and said they could waste me and nothing would happen . I am afraid for my life, but I want those men brought to book . The police can find them in the Gowon Estate , Egbeda, and Okota , Isolo, areas of the state, ” he added . When contacted , the state Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Olarinde Famous -Cole , said the police had started looking into the case Copyright PUNCH. Contact: editor @ punchng. com |

Oba Akiolu vs Oba Ogunwusi: My candid views! April 26, 2017 By Femi SHODUNKE NIGERIA: DEAR respected Nigerians, particularly those of Yoruba ancestral root, how many of you have seen the video trending now on the Facebook and Whatsapp over the “scornful” behaviour of Oba of Lagos Rilwan Akiolu to the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi? IN the video, Oba Akiolu, a retired Assistant Inspector General of Police, shunned (or disgraced) Oba Ogunwusi, who bowed in deference (a sign of respect to an elderly person) to the Oba Lagos to greet him at a public function in Lagos where there were many traditional rulers in attendance. This happened after Ooni had greeted and was embraced by the Obi of Onitsha, who sat beside Oba Akiolu. A quick look at the video will, no doubt, give the impression that the action of Oba Akiolu was deliberate, probably due to factor(s) only known to him. HOWEVER, you’ll recall that recently (March 28, 2017), I initiated a post, on my Facebook wall, titled “Oba Rilwan Akiolu: Kabiyesi Beware!” In the post, I advised the Kabiyesi on his utterances. Oba Akiolu had said then that there’s no vacancy at Alausa in 2019. The implication of that statement is that the current first term Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode, would automatically run for second term, even two years before the race would commence. Do you still recall Oba Akiolu’s rancorous statement before the 2015 election in which he was alleged to have told the Ibos in Lagos to jump into the lagoon if they would not support Ambode, the All Progressive Congress (APC) candidate, to win the governorship election? WHILE I’ll wait for the defence of Oba Akiolu on his “rude” action to Oba Ogunwusi, but from antecedents, based on my personal experience over the years, I can say without hesitation (though I may be wrong) that the Lagos monarch acted deliberately. WHY? OBA Akiolu is too impetuous. I’ve seen him display uncomplimentary attitudes at a public function. In 2005, at the 90thbirthday thanksgiving service of the late Alake of Egbaland, Oba Oyebade Lipede, at St. Peter Cathedral, Ake, Abeokuta, the Oba of Lagos shunned the late Ooni of Ife, Oba Okunade Sijuawade. Oba Akiolu, who got to the church late and was in angry look, refused to greet Ooni. But funnily enough, he exchanged pleasantry with Oba Lipede who sat close to Ooni Sijuwade. I wish my eyes can play out what I saw that day between Ooni Sijuade and Oba Akiolu. THERE was another ugly incident that day involving Oba Akiolu when he elbowed Otunba Kunle Ojora almost pushing him down in the church while going to the altar for Oba Lipede’s blessing by the Bishop of Egba Diocese. Indeed, it was Olori ‘Bimpe Lipede that came to the rescue of Chief Ojora. I was the ONLY newspaper journalist that saw it and reported that angle in my medium, The Comet newspaper, the edition which I still have in my library till today. I wish I can scan and I wrote: “The 80th birthday church service of the Alake of……was nearly marred yesterday when Oba Akiolu elbowed….” FUNNY enough my report caused uproar that during a discussion on it at the Island Club in Lagos my cousin called in the NIGHT to alert me on the anger of Oba Akiolu and some club members. He even joked that I shouldn’t visit Lagos because I’ve been declared “wanted.” HISTORICALLY, less than a year after the incident I was with an Egba Prince to visit Oba Akiolu in his palace, the first in my life inside Iga Idunganran. WITHOUT knowing that I was the writer of the Ake scenario Oba Akiolu made reference to it. He expressed bitterness on the publication and justified his action against Chief Ojora (his account is still fresh in my memory with him making reference to the late Prince Ademola Adeniji-Adele). I didn’t disclose I was the journalist and without him knowing, I recorded ALL his conversations with us that day on tape (which I hide under my cloth): how a newspaper reported him with his picture on the front page during the ascension to the throne of Oba Adeyinka (or so), which made him determined to become Oba of Lagos, life in the police, etc. Indeed, he was a good historian by his account that day despite been a University of Lagos graduate of Law. DEFINITELY, from the above I can say that the action of Oba Akiolu to Ooni Ogunwusi could be deliberate, probably to the “Ooni stool” (not to the person of the King) due to his frequent impetuous behaviors. OR could Oba Akiolu be looking at Ooni Ogunwusi’s age, as a “boy” he could be his father? But, if so, Ooni’s stool goes beyond age. At least, ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo, who is now 80 years and six years senior to Oba of Lagos, prostrated for Ooni Ogunwusi when he visited his palace shortly after his installation. So, what is the big deal in respecting culture? At least, some others who are senior to Oba Akiolu still bow and prostrate for him due to his exalted throne. WITHOUT doubt, Oba Akiolu must stand up for Governor Ambode at a public function, despite the fact that less than 10 years ago when Ambode was a Permanent Secretary in Lagos State, he must have prostrated to greet the King whenever he visited his palace. But today, will the same Ambode prostrate for Oba Akiolu? ABOVE all, Oba Akiolu needs to watch his behaviours before he would become public embarrassment not only to himself, but the good people of Eko, his admirers, Yoruba race and indeed Nigeria. MY appeal is that fellow traditional rulers should wade into the unbecoming attitude of Oba Akiolu (to counsel him appropriately) to prevent him from being attacked by overzealous followers of Ooni, disgraced or become public opprobrium in the eyes of those who should not only always respect but honour him. – Chief Femi Shodunke, a journalist, is the Baaroyin of Igbeinland and Baaroyin of Agbonland. |
