Politics / Justice For Comrade Alex Ogbu by ayodelej(m): 4:37am On Jan 23, 2020
It is thus clear that the system and the bosses who run it are the culprits regarding insecurity in the country. It is equally clear that Comrade Alex Ogbu who has been killed in his prime must not die in vain.
And to that end we call on the Nigeria masses, the labour movement in its entirety that is the NLC, TUC, ULC, FIWON and all left forces to join us to fight for justice for the fallen fighter and a democratic end to the state of insecurity, which entails a ceaseless fight to change the system.
In the immediate instance, we call for:
• An acceptance of culpability by the police on the killing of Alex Ogbu;
• The constitution of a judicial panel of inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the killing and the continued state of siege in the country. This must include the trade unions and other popular organisations of working-class people;
• The police officers responsible for killing Alex Ogbu be brought to book;
• Compensation be paid to his family. His wife and 2-year old daughter must not be made to bear the brunt of economic consequences for the family as a result of the condemnable murder of their husband and father.

Aged and physically challenged workers of Lagos State NURTW received bounties and goodies from Alhaji Ayinde Akinsanya M.C Oluomo on Thursday. This serves as a give back to the workers in NURTW who have served meritoriously and also dedicated to the union. While Mr Paul Oginni received financial assistance for medical treatment and was also placed on salary for life, the likes of Mr. Dede and other aged women at the state council received financial assistance to the tune of #500,000 to start a petty stall for upkeep in the time of old age and also be self employed. This is the kind of gesture required from who is who and well to do individuals in the society. While castigations and hate speech have been targeted on M.C Oluomo in the time past, this never hindered his good spirit from putting smiles on the faces of the less privileged in our society. It is also a call on other members of unions to emulate the kind behavior of this gentle Alhaji

*19 Days After DSS Fails To Release Detained OAU Activist, Transfers Him To Abuja*

The Department Of State Security (DSS), Oshogbo division, has transferred Olawale Adebayo (Mandate) to Abuja during this week after 19 days of unlawful detention, GIW can confirm.

It should be recalled that GIW reported earlier that Olawale Adebayo is one of the #RevolutionNow protesters that was arrested in Oshogbo on the 5th of August. He was arrested alongside three other students of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), a UniOsun lecturer, and two members of the Take It Back Movement. However, other arrested protesters were released few days after the arrest but the DSS have chosen to keep Mandate in detention for reasons best known to them.

Efforts made by several authorities and persons to secure his release are being frustrated by the DSS. In a related development the DSS has also refused to allow anyone see him, including his lawyer. However, his co-detainee who shared same confinement with him and was released two weeks ago confirmed that Mandate was not in a good state of health before he left the cell, he further stated that Mandate has been subjected to varying degrees of torture by the hard-wired security operatives.

In another development, a source who chose to speak under anonymity has revealed that the prolonged detention of Mandate might be linked to the strategic clampdown of the university management on campus activists - with Mandate being a prominent one. The source further stated that Mandate's prolonged detention is being influenced by certain power brokers in the University's helm of affairs. Already, the strategic victimisation of campus activists through portal deactivation, unlawful arrests, detention and arraignment with the aid of external forces such as DSS and the judiciary is a trend synonymous with the Ogunbodede-led administration.

Although, the university has denied influencing the detention and arraignment of the protesting students in a news published on OAUkilonshele on Monday, but, the circular earlier released on August 5 by the Dean Of Students' Affairs, Prof. Aransi, gives a contrast to such denial. The circular which reads on the fourth paragraph; "Any student involved in the protest would have himself/herself to blame.

One then would begin to wonder how the university can affirmatively state that students protesting outside it's jurisdiction would have themselves to blame if does not already have an unholy alliance with the security operatives and the judiciary.

Trends

On March 21, 2018, the Vice-chancellor orchestrated the arrest of five students, through the campus security, for protesting against his eviction order at Moremi hall, and subsequently they were detained in Koshere prison for seven days with stringent bail conditions. However, after an outpour of public criticism, he denied involvement in their arrest, the university even went further to state that the students were directly arrested by the policemen, when video evidences showed the arrest was done by campus security operatives who later handed them over to the police force for arraignment and disciplinary actions.

The kill-and-deny approach can be said to be another strategic tactics of the university management to victimise campus activists.

Legal perspective

The Constitution of Nigeria stipulates that a suspect should not be detained for more than forty-eight hours without trial, however, Mandate has been held in detention for over 19 days without a court trial. Recently, the DSS lawyer had tried to dissuade Mandate's lawyer from filing a court order for his bail, stating that the DSS would not honour such bail. Already, the DSS has built a reputation of disregarding court orders.

A Lagos-based lawyer, Ayo Ademiluyi Esq, has condemned the prolonged detention of Mandate as a gross violation of his fundamental human rights. 'In the first instance, he has spent excessive days in Oshogbo's cell, his transfer to Abuja is an infringement on his natural liberty and a further testament that the Buhari-led administration has no respect for democratic rights', Ayo Ademiluyi said.

As at the time of filing this report, all efforts to reach the DSS Oshogbo division and the authorities of Obafemi Awolowo University proved abortive.

The coming week would make it exactly three weeks that Mandate has been held in detention without any trial. A media campaign has been launched by several bodies with the hashtag: #FreeMandate.

Lagos Election: The coming together of 3 men
So many events have occurred in the recent days flowing from the Helter skelter of who is who in Lagos State Nurtw but the about to happen scene is gathering more momentum from two opposing sides with the Adolf Hitler(Alhaji Tajudeen Agbede), Notorious Kunle Poly and Wale Ajulo on one end and the other side but the past shall dictate the future of society depending on the Calibre of leaders that leads the so call society.
The Oshogbo scene is still in memorial which some hoodlums led by Alhaji Tajudeen Agbede distrupted and caused unrest in Oshogbo based on who becomes the national president of the union. The past of Kunle Poly is no longer a news to the society as his past is historical with notorious actions and do we see this people worthy of leadership role? It is a question to be answered by all of us
Another rally organized by this set of individuals will be another avenue of displaying and perpetrating devilish and notorious actions on innocent individuals on the street and a plan is on board to cause and factionalize the union if One Wale Ajulo fails to emerge as the chairman of Lagos Nurtw which needs to be rejected and exposes at all time.
Nurtw isn't any one's property or heritage as Alhaji Tajudeen Agbede is taking it neither it is hereditary but a union in need of competent, exposed and humble character. Lagosians shouldn't open eyes and allow spoilers to distrupt the standing Lagos Nurtw election on union godfatherism.

When the arrow of God is no longer at ease, things fall apart."
The crisis in National Union of Road Transport Worker is taking another dimension with Alhaji Agbede plotting and planting the seed of trouble in Lagos NURTW. The basis of selfish interest of the Chairman is not farfetched from the recent defeat of Agbede in the just concluded national NURTW election where the embattled Lagos Chairman loss gallantly to the incoming National president of the Union.
NURTW isn't a thuggery or tout association but a union of people with high Calibre and integrity who has the passion for the defense of our democracy and unity of the nation in general.
Alhaji Tajudeen Agbede is gradually planting the forbidden tree that might bear a forbidden fruits like the biblical apple, in the midst of the union, the report fetched uphold the loose to Alhaji Baruwa as the real reason of sudden planting of the forbidden tree in Lagos State NURTW in a way to put the Lagos State chapter into unnecessary chaos and imbroglio before the expiration of his tenure.
Every union has its modus operandi of operation and electoral practice which ought to be respected all times without hindrances and bye passing of processes that will champion in the new elected executives of the Union.
History in one way or another always stumble on individuals who take personal interest and godfatherism above collective interest and that is what Alhaji Tajudeen Agbede symbolises. Prior before 2015 election, Lagos NURTW has been put in the purse of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in which some millions of naira was collected from Chief Olabode George to work in support of PDP. Though every citizen is entitled to freedom of association but not to make the union or association an appendage of PDP.
The history is about to repeat itself with the introduction of "save my shame" agenda of Alhaji Tajudeen Agbede to militarily impose one Wale Ajilo as his successor of Lagos NURTW Chairman and what does the union stand to gain? Another PDP NURTW, No respecter of electoral processes and militarisation of the union. Similar actions of militarisation and godfatherism made Alhaji Tajudeen Agbede to loose woefully to Alhaji Baruwa when it was reported that: the street of Oshogbo was turned to a shooting range by the hoodlums of Alhaji Tajudeen Agbede.
People of this nature and his stooges like: Wale Ajilo are not fit to be in the affairs of governance, a scenario where members of NURTW were shut out to elevate Wale Ajulo behind close door. Is that what democracy preaches?
Lagosians must come to the aids of rescuing the Union from wolves and lions, stakeholders must halt the steps of this Adolf Hitler of NURTW. And the antention of security agencies of the state is called to checkmate the excesses of Alhaji Tajudeen Agbede and Wale Ajilo before turning the state into Anarchism.

"When the arrow of God is no longer at ease, things fall apart."

On Thursday, 27th. May, 2019, the President of Pentroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria, PENGASSAN died at about 3.00 am in an hospital in Portharcourt city, River State. He had just returned from Dubai that week. He complained of stomach upset the night before and was rushed to the hospital only to bid this cruel earth good bye in the wee hours of the next morning.
Born forty eight years ago , Francis Olabode Johnson hails from Lagos Island in Lagos State. He is reputed to be a jolly good fellow by his colleagues, Comrades, associates, friends and family.
He took over the reins of Administration of PENGASSAN in 2013 and was billed to hand over power in June this to pursue higher level of service to the labour movement as the President of Trade Union Congress of Nigeria, TUC. As it were, I arrangements have been concluded to field him as the unanimous, consensus candidate for this post later this month.
During his tenure as the President of PENGASSAN, he demonstrated exemplary humane leadership by example. His style was practical engagement of the various managements in the sector under his watch to ensure full execution of Collective Bargaining Agreement. He negotiated good Redundancy Agreement package with terminal benefits for workers affected. He was the Chairman of the joint sectoral union, NUPENGASSAN entrenching cordial relationships between the union as against the prevailent belligerent relations before his leadership. He and the President of NUPENG, Williams Akporeha related like blood brothers.
Johnson was an intense humanitarian. One of the leaders of the union, Ngozo Chiweizie, the zonal Chairperson of Women in PENGASSAN broke down in controllable tears when she had of the news of his sudden demise. Johnson had personally sponsored one of her children for medical treatment abroad to the tune of Five million Naira.
