The Cosmas Maduka story should make Nigerians ask a bigger question:

Is this really a government problem, or is it a Nigerian problem that government has simply made bigger?

According to Dr. Cosmas Maduka, founder of Coscharis Group, a former Plateau State governor allegedly approached his company for vehicles and wanted vehicles reportedly worth about ₦40 million to be invoiced at ₦80 million.

That is a serious allegation, and it should be independently verified. The former governor involved should also have an opportunity to respond.

But beyond this particular allegation, there is a bigger conversation we need to have.

Because if we are being honest with ourselves, the culture of "inflate it and share the difference" did not begin and end in government offices.

It has found its way into almost every sector of our society.

In the private sector, you can have a company owner asking a supplier for a quotation of ₦5 million when the actual purchase costs ₦3.5 million, with the expectation that somebody pockets the difference.

In some businesses, procurement officers may favour a particular supplier because of an unofficial "appreciation."

In construction, a job that should cost ₦20 million can suddenly become ₦30 million because several people have to "settle."

In schools, hospitals, churches, NGOs and even community organisations, the same mentality can appear: inflate the cost, create a fake expense, overstate the quantity or find a way to share the difference.

Then we enter local government.

Roads, drainage, streetlights, boreholes, school renovations, chairs, computers and other public projects can become opportunities for inflated contracts where oversight is weak.

At the state level, the numbers simply become bigger.

A vehicle, road project, consultancy contract, medical equipment or building project can pass through several layers of administration, creating opportunities for the original price to become completely disconnected from what the public eventually pays.

And at the federal level?

The money involved can run into billions.

This is why procurement fraud is not an imaginary problem. The EFCC has a dedicated Procurement Fraud Section, and its public records show that financial and procurement-related allegations have repeatedly reached the courts.

The Auditor-General's own assessment of federal financial management has also identified structural weaknesses, including problems around the preparation and submission of stand-alone financial statements by ministries.

But here is the uncomfortable part:

We cannot demand honesty from government while celebrating the same behaviour when it benefits us personally.

The businessman who complains that government officials inflate contracts but inflates his own company's invoice for another client is part of the same problem.

The employee who condemns politicians for stealing public money but manipulates company expenses is part of the same problem.

The contractor who complains about corruption but deliberately supplies inferior materials after winning a contract is part of the same problem.

The person who gets a government contract and immediately starts looking for how to recover his "connection money" is part of the same problem.

And the ordinary Nigerian who says, "If I don't take my own, somebody else will take it," is helping to normalise the mentality.

This is why corruption is bigger than PDP, APC, Labour Party, governors, presidents, civil servants or politicians.

It is a system of incentives, opportunities and attitudes.

Government simply has access to much larger pools of public money, which means the consequences can be much larger.

The real question should therefore not only be:

"Who is stealing Nigeria's money?"

We should also ask:

Why is it so easy to inflate a price?

Why can one person approve, procure and benefit from the same transaction?

Why are market prices not independently verified?

Why are procurement records not routinely transparent?

Why do companies sometimes participate willingly in questionable transactions?

Why can an employee manipulate an expense and still sleep peacefully?

And perhaps the most uncomfortable question:

What would happen to our economy if everybody who currently benefits from the system suddenly became genuinely honest?

Because ₦40 million becoming ₦80 million is not just an accounting difference.

That extra ₦40 million eventually comes from somewhere.

It comes from taxpayers.

It comes from a company's customers.

It comes from shareholders.

It comes from a government budget that could have funded another project.

It comes from the Nigerian economy.

So yes, let us investigate allegations against public officials.

But let us also stop pretending corruption lives exclusively inside government offices.

It is in procurement.
It is in contracting.
It is in private businesses.
It is in local government.
It is at state level.
It is at federal level.
And sometimes, unfortunately, it is in the ordinary choices made by ordinary Nigerians.

Until we deal with the culture, the incentives and the systems that make dishonest enrichment attractive, changing the person sitting in the office may not change the behaviour.

The problem is bigger than one governor.
It is bigger than one businessman.
It is bigger than one political party.

We need to build systems where ₦40 million cannot quietly become ₦80 million simply because someone has the power to ask for it.

However, I stopped following when I realised most of his principles were not designed to work in an African and most especially Nigerian markets.

I have been checking jiji all day and they are all 150k Up, anything 120k either has battery issues, board issues, intel celeron or is a chrome book. Basically it's seems close to impossible to get a laptop for 120k price that isnt a scam. Thats why i am considering changing boards in the first place

Good evening nairalanders, i really need your opinions on this

A few month back i did my sign out as a computer science student and my plan was to spend this time building my skills in web development. I am currently building a software that i want to go into fully as a startup. Unfortunately my laptop has been having charging issues for a while now so far two repairers have told me there is nothing they can do again

They said can either change the motherboard or use it as a desktop and so far i have been managing it as a desktop till yesterday night when i started hearing a very loud noise from the laptop. I tried dusting it but the noise keeps coming from the fan and now it is so slow that it takes about an hour for the laptop to prepare my nextjs project. With Nepa light it isn't possible to work with such constraints.

The prices of devices now are not smiling at all and i dont have the money to get a laptop. Would it be a good move to change the motherboard?

TLDR: The board of my laptop is currently bad and i don't have the money to buy a new laptop would it be a good move to change the motherboard of my laptop?

I swear i can measure 7 cups of rice and finish it in just one day and i can't still add one pound of flesh. Someone who sees me will think i'm not eating well but thats the reverse case.

This is how i eat; Because i work remotely so i'm always indoors. When i finish cooking like 11am in the Morning, i dish out the food in my plate, a huge portion. After eating that, i rest for like 30min then i go back to the Pot to dish out another portion again. After eating the second time, i rest again for like 2 hours then i go back to dish out a third portion again. Before its 6pm,the food has almost finished and i still crave for more.

Why do i eat like this? Could it be caused by boredom and idleness? Its making me spend a lot on food. 7 cups no fit last me for 2 days again. .

Funny thing is when a guy takes me out, i go just dey form. Order very small light meal. The guy will be like "will that be enough for you? Its too small na".
